Advanced Essay 4: Alexander Hamilton, the Hero of our Nation
Alexander Hamilton, the man made famous in the 21st Century by a Broadway show. He was the man that documented the Coast Guard, was the top aide to George Washington, created our financial system, and embodied the influence and power of chance that our country holds for so many. When Hamilton first entered the borders of the United States to study in New York, the Revolutionary War was on the verge of beginning. The Revolutionary War was the armed conflict between the 13 colonies of North America (later to be known as the United States) and Great Britain. With the help of allies, the colonies ended up winning in 1783, after a eight year war filled with deaths and terror, and the United States became free formally in 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris.
Alexander Hamilton was born in the West Indies, a top export to Britain in the 18th Century. He was “a bastard, orphan, son of a whore”, who conquered all the stereotypes to become one of the top political advisers in the late 18th Century to the 19th Century. His mother was divorced before meeting Alexander’s father and through that, Alexander was immediately seen as less than other kids his age. He immigrated to the colonies with the funds of a scholarship created by his neighbors who saw strong potential in the book obsessed, intelligent young man. From then on he was an immigrant also, beginning his studies at King's College. In 1775, he became a member of a militia company.
By 1776, he was appointed as captain to his company, a group of other army folk from across the 13 colonies. The company he inspired, is the longest consecutively serving company in the US Army. Soon afterwards, he became the top aide to George Washington. Hamilton was put in charge of a wide range of military conflicts and intel as one of the most important confidants of the army general. Hamilton was the first person to make contact with British troops during the battle of Yorktown. He was on the front line and captivated a daring personality during the battle that ultimately designed our country. After Yorktown, with the exception of Washington, Hamilton was the most popular figure in the 13 colonies. Washington trusted Hamilton’s opinion during intel conversations greater than anyone else. From that, Hamilton played a top settler on militarial intelligence and participated in top communications during battles. Hamilton played a key role in Yorktown and other conflicts.
Washington and Hamilton were adoringly close. Their relationship was admired as a father and son relationship, one filled with trust, admiration, and grit. Considering that Hamilton had never had an acquaintance with his father, Washington became the father like figure of the young scholar. In a famous picture, on a battleground stand the two. With Washington being much taller than Hamilton, he stands tall and confident with his hand placed admirably on his beloved horse. Hamilton with his shorter and prouder manner, stands in a insightful fashion near his adored friend. The two prop on a battlefield, the area where the two of them became close and joined together in a mission to acquire their joint country (or adopted country in the case of Hamilton) to create the greatest United States of America that was possible.
Hamilton’s views were transferred and created by his role in the army, playing a deep root in his values as he grew to become a political top aide. Hamilton understood the importance of the army but also the importance of valuing human life and creating a cap to place war as the last resort. His close relationship with a military hero, George Washington, had deep meaning for the rest of his life. His time in the military changed him and history. From a review of the 1999 book, Republican Empire: Alexander Hamilton on War and Free Government, by the Independent Review “The greatest differences between Hamilton and his political opponents involved war. Distrusting the intentions of all the great powers of Europe, Hamilton feared that war was right around the corner and that a responsible administration had to prepare the country for it. His opponents were less fearful of war and more trusting of European intentions. By the end of the 1790s, those opponents included not only Jefferson and Madison, but also President John Adams, who resented Washington’s insistence that Hamilton be commissioned a major general and made inspector-general, akin to today’s army chief of staff, during the quasi-war with France.”
Without Hamilton’s views and inputs in the early years of our country, our country would not be the same. Hamilton believed that putting funds and intelligence into defense for the United States would allow us to become the most powerful nation on earth. As we see now, just under a third of our country’s budget goes to the military and it was due to Hamilton who advocated for that to be done. During the times of Hamilton this could have been more useful, considering there were many more reasons to have input in the defense of a brand new country. Hamilton changed the role of the US and its military in the world.
Hamilton believed in the United States of America and all it could achieve. Through his outspoken values and his creative, non stop writings, Hamilton established his name in the history books of our country. Yet, through remembering all that he achieved to create the country that now stands above all in terms of economic and military power, Hamilton helped make this country. Without Hamilton our military wouldn’t be the same. Our stance in the world wouldn’t be the same. And by God, our country would not be the same.
Hamilton changed history. Without Hamilton our country would be different. There would not be such an input in our countries military and intelligence. The US became the greatest world power in World War One, in many ways due to the influence of its military in domestic and international affairs. Without Hamilton’s input to get to that point of putting the military over many other domestic issues, our country wouldn’t be the same it is now. The US is powerful (whether you like it or not) due in part of the funds to the military. To get rid of those ideas would be to get rid of Hamilton. Our idea of a free press would hold no truth without his intense writings that captivated citizens. Without Hamilton, our country wouldn’t be the way it is. Hamilton created the United States of America and he should be remembered as more than a $10 bill. He deserves the respect that we accomplish to all other founding fathers. His mark is strong. Hamilton is the one that made the US and the world what it is.

Monarchy
Advanced Essay #3: Monarchy
Most of us are born into families where life is quite simple. We having a loving or two loving parents, who are attentive to our needs as we grow and expand in the world. Some of us have siblings, who immediately become discouraged at our birth with the realization that there is a new thing in town to be more prominent in our parents’ eye. We grow up normally. Eating three well balanced meals a day, enjoying playing and talking with friends, and learning from everything around us inside and outside of our schools. We try our entire lives trying to figure out who we are.
Yet, there are few whose lives have been written in the history books for them. The monarchs, those whose bloodline ranges from some of the most prominent and high-ranking leaders of their nation's history. The House of Saud, House of Bourbon, House of Windsor, simply to name three of the 26 principal royal families worldwide. Acknowledged across many nations, few still have a reigning, single family in charge of the country politically. Compared to the 18th Century, royal families have severely died down due to conflicts regarding their power and society's outlook towards them. The question remains as to why after so many deaths, problems, and public outrage across the history of our world, why countries (both internationally leading and minor) continue to have these families incorporated as either the nations head of state and/or head of government.
The most universally recognized royal family today, is the House of Windsor. The Queen (or the reigning monarch at the time) is the head of state for the United Kingdom. In the case of the UK, the royal family does not play a role politically. However, they have the opportunity in recognizing treaties, in addition to lesser roles in the government. The royal family gets their funds from the people, to note the cash that goes to the royal family is not a large amount at all. That is in the case of the UK however, for Saudi Arabia where the royal family rule the government of the country and which includes thousands of members, the taxation numbers are much greater. For the UK, the royal family receives over 40 million pounds each year from taxation (in many ways their salary for doing very little), while the Prime Minister who runs the country and is elected by the people of the UK only gets a salary of 142,500 per year.
Not all royals are good people. King Juan Carlos I of Spain, last summer abdicated his throne to his son a 39 year reign. The King was a celebrated liberal, peacemaker who created and developed democracy in the country. As good of a man and well liked domestically and internationally King Juan Carlos was, his family wasn’t as appreciated. His daughter and 6th in line to the Spanish throne, Princess Cristina and her husband have dealt with severe fraud charges in recent years. Due to the negative press involving the scandal, King Juan Carlos I of Spain had to abdicate his throne to his son Prince Felipe (a much more favorable, public figure) and his very much loved wife Princess Letizia, in hopes of saving the monarchy. For now that stands, but the Spanish people are still not sold on the monarchy anymore.
It's important to realize that royal families, especially in the case of the UK, cannot successfully survive without the people's support. Throughout history we have seen that, especially in our country. The United States of America developed into a nation with the extradition of the British royal family. We didn’t like what they were doing or how they treated us, and through their actions we demolished them from our borders. It’s important that the people are in charge of the royals. It’s similar to the tools and values of dictators. They can stay in power for so long and do what they will but once the people bring distrust and lack of partnership, the tables turn.
Political Literacy by Gabrielle P. Kreidie (Advanced Essay #2)
This unit we discussed the difference definitions worldwide on the topic of literacy. We discussed in groups the power literacy has to satisfy one's thoughts through writing, comprehending and reading. The essay below, had to incorporate a thesis on the topic of literacy due to what we took away from this unit. We had to incorporate outside sources and a scene of memory to help us justify our thoughts. I am very much proud of my essay and am effectively able to communicate my ideas on political literacy and the importance that it has on our lives.
The power of political literacy is that the smartest and most determined have the most courage to use it. One of the most genius political creatures in our world today is Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia. He’s powerful, commanding, strong and forceful. Here in the US, we all have this necessity to say we hate him. Too many don’t understand the capabilities of this guy and what he hopes to accomplish. To fully accomplish a excellence in understanding political literacy, one must understand and follow the news, create their own educated opinions, and utilize information and evidence in a beneficial way.
At the 70th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, as one would expect hundreds of world leaders (both democratically elected and forcefully elected) took part of the occasion. In addition to leaders of the EU, poor countries and countries with small populations, the President of the Russian Federation, a political icon, and tiger hunting shirtless beast, arrived at the event, as well. This was a very important diplomatic mission for Putin. With his increasingly voice in the Syrian conflict and strained relationships with multiple world leaders, he had something to prove. What greater way than by having a one on one interview with Charlie Rose!
“A lot can be done, but not everyone immediately succeeds in everything. How long has it taken the democratic process to develop in the United States? Since it was founded. So, do you think that as regards democracy everything is settled now in America? If this were so, there would be no Ferguson issue, right? There would be no other issues of similar kind, there would be no police abuse. Our goal is to see all these issues and respond to them timely and properly. The same applies to Russia. We also have a lot of problems.” The quote is a answer Putin gave to Rose on the topic of political instability in Russia. Putin connected the US to Russia and talked about the ways where the two were so similar. He later went on to not fully criticize Obama and rather have it as a right of the American people to create their very own opinions on their leader. Through soft and hard questions, Putin responded with a exquisite sentence. He gave tremendous answers that had the ability for the world to see him as a equal and as a intelligent guy, which he wanted. He is truly a master of literacy.
The Chief of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, talks about the importance of reading with the approval of the Sustainable Development Goals, “Promoting literacy must stand at the heart of this new agenda,” she said. “By empowering individual women and men, literacy helps to advance sustainable development across the board – from better healthcare and food security to eradicating poverty and promoting decent work.” A campaign for all students of the world to have basic education has evolved across the world. Most notably, people that advocate for equality in education want all people to be literate.
It has been proven in multiple studies throughout the years, that when people are literate they have on average a greater intelligence level than that of one who can’t read, comprehend or write. Across our world are able to use their literate powers to undercover the truths and realities that hold our nations and beliefs.
To Gloria Steinem, a feminist idol and writer herself, states that in order to be a member of our world today, through being informed of the conflicts facing the world, “you have to be literate, which a lot of women in the world are not; and you still have to make change happen in real life, because empathy—the ability not just to know but to feel—only happens when we are together with all five senses”. According to Gloria Steinem, literacy in today’s way of life is not reading fiction, the false stories, rather it’s reading the truth. That’s how you change the world.
As it’s known, nearly a billion people have basic or below basic literacy of their native languages, worldwide. Most of them women or young girls. We can change that number. Nelson Mandela, a hero to the people that want to change the world, founded a foundation named after himself in 1999. This foundation fights for his morals for the world’s citizens. For a 12-month period, the foundation developed a campaign to increase literacy in areas where it was most needed. Through the influence of the book Long Walk to Freedom by Madiba, the people of South Africa had the motivation to create encouragement nationwide to learn how to read and encourage the understanding of others literacy levels through following current events and creating informative opinions. This has the potential to become a worldwide campaign, so that all could create their own opinions on Vladimir Putin.
We may all be different from one another. Different genders, ethnicities, jobs, families and nations. But all in all, we are humans. We are the creators of creativity and warriors of humanity. Literacy improves us as human beings, as educators, as ourselves. Giving the chance of all (which everyone deserves) to take advantage of this superpower completes our charity to the greater good.

Advanced Essay #1: Invisible Iron Dome
Hope, broke, killed, died. A peace deal was a possibility. Soon afterwards, human right laws were broken. One war began and armies were killed. More than one person died, more than one dream of hope ended. Soon after, the cycle begins again. Never stopping to the end. The whole world has lived through one, a war between Palestine and Israel. A conflict that has raged for years and probably many more to come.
In my lifetime, there have been too many wars. Too many people dead, too many people's hopes lost. Yet, giving a blind eye to the hope for a peaceful solution is what too many across the region and across the world have brought upon themselves. I still see a future of change in a peaceful manner for this ongoing challenge that has faced generations for decades.
July 8th, 2014. The middle of the summer and 10 days before Madiba Day, the internationally recognized day of service celebrating the life and fight for human rights that the iconic leader Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela gave our world. That was the day Israel began one of their many military invasions on Palestinian land. Later on, the world would hear of despicable numbers detailing the people that were murdered by the apartheid government. 2,000 plus Palestinian men, women and children would die in the weeks that followed. To this day, families continue to suffer from the war, the war that highlighted the inhumane actions that Israel took on their supposed “enemy”.
“Israel isn’t the enemy,” say Fox News.
“They are the heroes for peace,” say half our country.
Then why does a hero carry hundreds of deadly weapons, including the most dangerous weapons known to men and women, in their backyard? Why have they threatened to use them (and have indeed used other deadly weapons) on millions of people? What does a enemy or a hero mean to us as a nation? Were we heroes when we sent the nuclear bomb to Japan? Were we enemies when we formally recognized Nelson Mandela as a leader and not a ‘terrorist’?
Days before the official military intervention by the Israeli government led by all around war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu, my family and I had followed the news consequently. It was like running a marathon for us, the pictures brought pain but at the same time (strangely) optimism. Even though each news agency took the war in a different perspective and sometimes bias view, we looked over each news program carefully to understand their hidden statement. Yet, there was less bias on news agencies compared to wars in the past. There was a small hole of openness to all sides of the conflicted that wasn’t real a year before.
Now, it was July 8th and I was set to leave to Germany the day that followed. We stood around looking at the live images on MSNBC. Israel had invaded Palestine. Israel began to harm, to break and to kill. All our personal worries ended, for the worries, the pain, the struggle of the Palestinians was real. And it was not going to end.
There’s this dome, a dome that hides the world’s people from the true story, the complete story. For this dome is made of iron, it seems to never be able to break. It’s so tough and sturdy, that to everybody it feels like human nature, it’s just a simple fact. Like Christopher Columbus being a exploring hero or George Washington being the most perfect President in history, nearly everyone takes it as fact, without digging for the utterly, complete truth. Not the biased truth but the real truth. We go into the lazy category there, when we have the curiosity to learn so much more. For the dome we live under, however, everything we hear isn’t necessarily fact. What’s outside the dome isn’t completely told. For this dome seems unbreakable, for now.
This dome is invisible. To more than half this world, no one can see it being formed over their mindset and heart as they grow and accomplish. But there are few with the superpower to escape outside the dome and see the perspective view. Those superheroes don’t have bias, they encounter the truth of a conflict that has too many opinions and to much passion, that it’s nearly impossible to make everyone happy with your very own view. There’s more than that invisible, iron dome and we can all break it from ourselves. We have that power. and we should use it.
Israel and Palestine is not the only conflict with so much complexity that no one really understands it and see no use for a peaceful resolution. There’s a huge refugee crisis affecting Europe. The refugees come from two continents, Asia and Africa (and some from Europe itself). For not all news agencies cover it in detail, due to not seeing interest in the refugees and instead in an election that is over a year away. There is an intense murder rate swooping Central and South American countries that has frightened human rights activists across the world. We only hear about what’s going on down there when Donald Trump opens his mouth and the reaction that follows. Why do we not want to challenge ourselves to care?
There are people dying while the rest of the world just stares in with half a care. We all have a deep curiosity on the fabulous and usually crazy lives of rich celebrities. Yet when it comes to painful truth on our fellow global citizens living under terrible conditions within their borders, we don’t care. If we can care about Kim Kardashian’s “dresses” and Kanye’s fashion show, why can’t we care about the women who has lost her entire wardrobe, entire home, entire life due to bombing or due to lack of basic necessities? If we can care about the birth of Princess Charlotte, where hundreds camped outside for a family that has no real power, why can’t we care about the babies born without an officially approved nation or for a baby that is a refugee within her first second of birth? We need to care about the conflicts surrounding our world. We need to leave the invincible, iron dome and find the truth.
Climate Change Monologue Project
A Indian man living in Dubai writing a letter to his father.
Pita-
Nirmana. Bana’. Build… Hamesa (always) It never stops. I get paise (money). I know you want more paise but I don’t have any more to give you. I need to survive, as well. I have places to travel every weekend, a new apartment in France, a new house in Dubai, I need to go out to eat every night and hang out with friends. I need something, I jina (live) in Dubai! One of the richest countries in the world.
To say I have not worked enough, father, is beyond false. I work more and longer here in Dubai than in Patna. Baraha (twelve)! Yes, can be twelve hours sometimes. Father, I have helped build the tallest building in the world, the only hotel in the world with 7 stars and so much more.
I told you all those sala (years) ago that I would stay in Dubai for a bit to learn about architecture design. I keep on pushing it but you must trust me, father, I need to push that flight home more and more. My company has asked me to start planning for the greatest project ever to be made.
I stand here and am making the plans for Dubai’s indoor world to be completed in 2020, building would start a year after in 2021. The temperature is changed to a perfect temperature for all. There will be 100 hotels and 20 apartment buildings. It will hold the largest mall in the world and perfect restaurants. Health resorts will be all around us with parking spots for a good 50,000 cars. The 48 million square foot giant dome, where thousands will live. 180 million are projected to visit every year.
Dubai is building a dome father. Yes, a gumbada (dome)! I know you can’t believe it, compared to what you and mother live in. I think it would be wise of you and mom to come live here in Dubai with me. I know you believe in that global warming thing, but if you want to be “protected” come to the Dome! Come to Dubai! You can have everything you want.
There are the greatest cars you will ever see, Ferrari, Bugatti, Porsche. I even have three porsche’s myself...you have to in Dubai. Father, I was thinking about buying you one. How does a red ferrari sound for you and mom on that farm? Better yet, why don’t you just move here to Dubai! You can everything you want, go anywhere you want and much more. It all comes without consequences!
Love you Pita,
Your son (Bishen)
Thiago, a young boy from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro
"Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and we need to meet this challenge together." "Climate change is a fact. Its consequences, damages and costs are already being felt around the globe." -- Heinz Fischer, federal president of Austria
Davi can’t help you, Mr. Silva… My brother is tried, he has worked on the World Cup stadiums, nonstop. He’s worked long days and usually would not return home until dinnertime, once I had returned home from school… Because I enjoy school! I get an education that I can’t get anywhere else… I don’t learn anything from these streets… All there is are drugs and prostitutes, Mr. Silva… I dream of being an engineer, sir… Someone that changes the world by creating things… Well yes cars are an example but I want to be a environmental engineer.
Ok. How can I explain this?... Well you have seen the stadiums right?... Well, even though most have solar panels or a form of solar and renewable energy, these stadiums have taken billions of dollars to build just so they can play four games… Yes, our government spent over ten billion dollars on stadiums that won’t even be used anytime in the future! Plus, we had to input all this equipment which were flown in from all over the world, just so games could be played… Exactly what everyone thinks. Fifa made us build all those big stadiums instead of using one’s we already have… I know Mr. Silva, you don’t like President Rousseff at all, little do.
"Brazil is a major food producer. We are aware that low-carbon farming practices both reduce emissions and increase productivity in the agricultural sector. Similarly, agroecological practices in smallholder farming help reduce rural poverty in the countryside. " -- Dilma Rousseff, president of Brazil.
Now discussing climate summit in class
I didn’t know what to think of the climate summit Mrs. Santos… It was important to have these people come together and discuss but that’s all the do, discuss. They talked for a whole day in all different types of meetings but never came to a plan or any sort of commence of a plan to embark on our challenge to fight climate change… President Obama did go to the summit, as did Prime Minister Cameron, President Hollande, and many other important head leaders. But, Putin wasn’t there, Xi Jiping wasn’t there, Chancellor Merkel, Australia, Canada or India head leader representatives weren’t there either. Developing countries barely had a say on what their country needed help with on the topic or contribute any plan for the UN to combat climate change. It was just a bunch of talking, no action.
"Climate change is the defining issue of our age. It is defining our present. Our response will define our future. To ride this storm we need all hands on deck. That is why we are here today. We need a clear vision. The human, environmental and financial cost of climate change is fast becoming unbearable. We have never faced such a challenge. Nor have we encountered such great opportunity. A low-carbon, climate resilient future will be a better future. Cleaner. Healthier. Fairer. More stable. Not for some, but for all." Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki Moon.
How can I explain it to you Marcelo?... The climate change summit was almost like the world cup. Leaders from all over world came together and discussed global warming. They talked about how bad it was and very few gave points to stick with to battle it… During the world cup, there were countries that everyone paid attention to; Germany, England, Brazil, US, France, as examples. There were countries that very few thought even had a slight chance to win; Ghana, Cameroon, Bosnia, Costa Rica, Iran, as examples. It was similar during the summit. Sure some leaders didn’t appear but the people with the largest speeches and most speaking time were those from the US, France, Germany, England, Brazil but countries such as Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Guatemala, Gabon, as examples barely did.
During the summit there were certain people that held the power. Obama, Hollande, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, Leonardo DiCaprio, David Cameron. They were the Neymar, Ronaldo, Messi of the day. Sure they had a thing to say but it didn’t mean they were the only important ones.
"Climate change serves as a threat multiplier and contributes to escalate conflicts over natural resources, hinder the economic development and increases pressures on international governance. The cost of not addressing climate change consists a serious threat to the stability of impacted states, as well as undermining progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals." -- Bujar Nishani, president of Albania
The whole point of the summit was to get a picture for the UN in order to fight the global warming right now. Our leaders failed to do that. It was just a field day for them, a chance for them to take photos with one another and shake hands, act as though the world is perfect but we know better Marcelo… We, the normal people, the poverty struggling people in places like the favelas around the world who don’t have a form of leadership titled to their name are the Costa Rica of the world. We have a small amount of cash but once our skills are heard and seen, the story of our world may just be heard.
“But let me be honest. None of this is without controversy. In each of our countries, there are interests that will be resistant to action. And in each country, there is a suspicion that if we act and other countries don't that we will be at an economic disadvantage. But we have to lead. That is what the United Nations and this General Assembly is about.” President Barack Obama.
We can come together as a world to combat global warming. We saw the world come together for the world cup only two months ago. Football can connect the world, why can’t climate change? As Pele says, Brazil eats, sleeps and drinks football. It lives football! But we also live through climate change.
Angela Merkel is about to make a speech to the UN General Assembly in the 2014 Climate Summit, she is thinking to herself.
Never have I ever witnessed a world so distraught over one simple fact. Climate change. At the height of my life, I am chancellor of Germany. I go here to the UN, I talk to other leaders and still view people that conclude that climate change isn’t real. As a former physicist and environmental minister of Germany, I know beyond a doubt with the help of the ever flowing data from more than 97% of scientist stating that global warming is completely real.
Since taking my seat as a politician in Germany, I have been a person to uphold a lot of responsibility in the environment sense. I was part of the group of selected officials and key leaders drafting Kyoto Protocol in 1997. During and after my work as environmental minister in 1994 to 1998, Germany has become a leader, if not the most impactful nation, to combat climate change. One of the largest elders in renewable energy and reductions of emissions over the past two decades.
Germany has the ability to guide the world, including developing countries and largely industrialized countries, to take in a role to thwart global warming by creating jobs, improving the environment, polish education especially in STEM areas, promote women’s rights in STEM fields and meliorate our nation’s communication. I know for certain that now is the time to agitate global warming. We have time to modify our story before climate change takes it from us. Regulation of simply things like CO2, will bring jobs but also care for our earth.
Angela goes up to speak at the united nations climate summit
Ladies and gentleman, leaders of the world, normal human beings, it’s time to act. Our world is calling for us. We must come together and take action. We are called here to come up with plans to react. We are the terrorist in this situation, lets obey our call to action before we are all gone.

Blog #3: The Syrian Refugee Crisis, A Chapter That Will Not End; Written By: Gabrielle P. Kreidie
Three years ago, a civil war erupted in a nation known to the world as Syria. A pernicious difference between those who run the government under the leadership of President Bashar Al Assad, and twenty two million people who made up the population of Syria, started during the days of the Arab Spring. The Arab Spring began in Tunisia, where in December 2010, Mohamed Bouazizi burnt himself in front of law officers . The Arab Awakening, as it is often referred to, moved on to the rest of the Middle East, Northern Africa and surrounding countries, as it attracting the news of everyone in the world. As the more and more people that got involved with both nonviolent and violent protests against their government in these countries, the less and less anyone focused on the suffering, ordinary people and the new set of millions of refugees were now facing.
Throughout the past seven months I, Gabrielle P. Kreidie a ninth grader at Science Leadership Academy, have researched the ever growing conflicting of the Syrian Refugee Crisis. My first two blogs, Blog #1 and Blog #2 talked about the research I found, in addition to interviews I have conducted, to figure out even more about the refugee crisis than what the media lets on. Refugees are heading to neighboring countries, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, as well as finding asylum in countries such as Bulgaria. There are more than nine million Syrians who have fled their homes from the Syrian Civil War, with over two and a half million registered as refugees in other countries by the United Nations. As the fighting gets worse and worse, the more amount of Syrians who die increases and the amount of hope for liberty and privacy for Syrians decreases exponentially.
The image shown above is the set up for the Syrian Refugee Panel. Mr. Khorchid, a Syrian businessman (far left), Gabrielle P. Kreidie, moderator (left) , Mr. Reaume, a member of the Qatar Foundation (on computer, skyped into the conference), Mr. Kreidie, a professor at Villanova University for Middle Eastern Studies and founder and executive director of the Philadelphia Arab-American Community Development Corporation (right), and Mr. Przbylek (a member of the Nationalities Service Center).
More than two and a half million Syrians refugees, not including the Palestinian refugees who fled to Syria in the 1970’s until the conflict upheld and they lost their homes again, need our help. Not one person would dare place their self in Syria, as of right now, it is certainly dangerous for any man, women and child. Yet, we do not need to put ourselves in complete danger in the case that we want to help our fellow humans who are suffering in the hands of their treacherous leader. You can help them from thousands of miles away, just as I did.
For the final component of this project which I have started promoting since the beginning of the school year, I organized a Syrian Refugee Panel. This panel allowed students from all over my school to understand the issue facing straight in front of us and allow all sorts of educated people on the crises to speak their views. The panel included a professor for Middle Eastern Studies, a Syrian businessman, an employer of the Nationalities Service Center in Philadelphia, and an employer of the Qatar Foundation. The panel was incredibly successful and I was told by my fellow peers that they learnt a lot, which was my goal all along.
Mr. Khorchid talking about the problems his family and other families are facing in Syria. Mr. Reaume focused on the troubles refugee camps were facing.
The easiest way to help the Syrian refugees is, what I did at my school, spread the word on the crisis to all sorts of people. Very few all over the world know exactly what is happening to the Syrian refugees, having the ability to be educated on this topic and then present your knowledge to others is one of the greatest ways to keep this very serious issue in the minds of all. There are many other ways to get involved, you can go to the World Food Program for additional ways that you can help the Syrian refugees, as well as Save the Children and UNICEF. There you can donate money and find fundraising ideas to campaign for the Syrian refugees.
The Syrian refugee crisis is becoming more and more aware in the news force lately, from a very powerful superhero, celebrities. Celebrities, as famous as they are, are able to highlight important issues with millions, if not billions, of people paying attention to all that they do. Harvey Weinstein missed the 2014 Cannes Film Festival release of a movie he distributed, Grace of Monaco, to stay in Jordan and talk to children refugees from Syria about films. Angelina Jolie, an ambassador to the United Nations, has made multiple trips to hosting countries for Syrian refugees, and continued to highlight the issue in the news. Even the popular Pope Francis, on his recent trip to Jordan and the Holy Land thanked the Jordan government for holding half a million Syrian refugees in their country and earlier this year has called for an “urgent end” to the civil war.
Mr. Kreidie focused on the history of the conflict and the international response for the crisis. Mr. Przbylek focused on what we did in our region to help Syrian refugees.
This project has allowed me for the past year to focus on a honestly, important issue. Being Arab- American, I know the struggles my family is facing thousands of miles away, while I live in the United States of America living a pretty relaxed life compared to all of them. I am one of the lucky ones, in terms of not having to deal with civil wars right outside my door. My dream is to work for the United Nations and to give people around the world the greatest amount of help while they are suffering. I hope to open schools in refugee camps and campaign for money for vaccinations for every person in the camps. I have seen, through this project, that I have a tool to change the world in my hand: the internet. Sure, this blog may not be breaking news on CNN, yet as long as one person sees it, the message will be received. Thank you for taking the time on checking this blog and researching the Syrian refugee crisis. The end of the crisis will come, only if we step up and speak aloud.
Thank you to Miss Dunn for everything! You are one of the greatest teachers I have ever had and one of the kindest people I know, and one with great amount of shrewd!

Syria: The Struggle Continues and the Hope Seems Lost
Hello, my name is Gabrielle Kreidie. I am a ninth grader at Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If you had read my Blog Post #1, I am doing a project on refugees, focusing on Syria. For the past three years, there has been a conflict unfolding, a conflict that has killed nearly half a million people. This conflict is called the Syrian Civil War. The people of Syria have been rebelling against their government controlled by the brutal, President Bashar Al Assad. This has resolved in endless deaths, homes burnt to the ground, small supply of food and water, and a refugee crisis that is scaring everyone.
Since my last blog post, there has been a lot that has changed in Syria. There is now Cases of Polio becoming aware in a country where vaccinations are nearly impossible to receive. The refugee crisis in Syria is NOW the worst refugee crisis since World War Two. Out of all the genocides and wars in the past seventy years, Syria has now made the top of people having to leave their homes than any other. Not only have 2.5 million people become refugees in Syria but an additional six million have become refugees in their own country. This means six million Syrians who have left their homes, either from random attacks or destroyed homes, taking refuge in other places in Syria.
There have been many new articles I have found in the past three months since my last blog post. Check them out on my Annotated Bibliography. Stories have been pulling into the internet as the world starts to get the real sense of the struggle of the Syrian people. I wanted to go deeper though, than what the media portrays. I wanted the complete picture of the Syrian people. That is why I conducted two interviews. One Interview with Marwan Kreidie, a Middle Eastern studies professor at Villanova University and a Lebanese-American, who just so happens to be my father. The other Interview with Chukri Korchid, a Syrian-Ameircan businessman who is head of the Al-Aqsa school. The way these two men described the sickening details of the lives of refugees in Syria and in neighboring countries. The truth came out, and I must say it was not one to be proud of.
Al Assad is a horrible person. I think we can all put that behind us, he is killing his own people and no one from the international community is really stepping up to the plate and helping the horrified Syrians. Surely it does not help that Vladimir Putin’s Russia is the strongest ally of Bashar Al Assad’s Regime, which makes the US almost scared to strike Syria. This is what gets me damaged as a US citizen myself. Why is Obama and Congress not striking Syria? I do not know why these politicians believe that watching innocent people die is not our problem. Look I am no patriot, I do NOT believe that the United States of America is the greatest nation on earth- honestly we do horrible stuff all over the world. That’s not the point, however, we are the most powerful country in the world. We have the largest military compared to the next ten largest militaries combined. We have large allies that will stick by us all the time, England, France. We have the power and resources to strike Al Assad’s regime, yet we do not do it. We claim that we promote freedom to all yet we are one of reasons why twenty two million Syrians are in suffering. Just because we are scared doesn’t give us a reason to step out of the picture. As Mr. Korchid said: “We missed out on the opportunity to change it (to end the Civil War in the beginning of the fighting). In Libya we didn’t care if we threw in a missile.”
As long as the US does not jump in and start helping, the CIA is projecting that this war will go on for another decade. That’s a very long time. I’m disappointed on how the international community is handling this. The United Nations tried to do a conference, in hopes of promoting peace for all sides. That did not turn out so well, and I’ll tell you why. Mr. Kreidie states, ”We (the United States of America) are too eager in playing our regional games there. To solve this conflict we need all people in, we had this peace talk that did not go well. Iran and Hezbollah should we brought in, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia- they are all involved. Iran is supporting AL Assad, Saudi Arabia rebels. This shouldn’t have to be on who is the US enemy or ally- the conflict is in Syria, everyone needs to be involved.” That’s just it, this is not a US issue, we are barely participating yet we want to take control of the conference. Every single person needs to get involved in this conflict. We need everyone to promote peace.
For my next step in this project I have to come up with a way to change this issue, one way or another. Since Syria is halfway across the world for me, I have to think small to help a crisis. I plan on making my own blog promoted in keeping a strong view on Syrian refugees and the Syrian people. As well as getting other humanitarian crisis on alert, including Congo, Ukraine, Venezuela, Thailand, etc. I will interview all sort of people to get their opinions, to get the truth on what the people are thinking.
I hope the end of this crisis approaches, I hope that people will return home. We need to act as people, we need to get our government completely involved in this crisis. We need our government to listen to us, the people who they should be listening to. We need their attention, before a whole generation of Syrians are ripped apart.

Syria and other Civil Wars, Suffering of Citizens: YATW: Blog Post #1
Hello my name is Gabrielle Kreidie, a student at Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For the rest of the year my class and I are doing individual projects on certain subjects with the goal to change the world around us. We will become Agents of Change by the end of the year with the help of research. This is my first blog post, I hope you enjoy it. For further information visit my bibliography.
The world has heard of the civil war in Syria. The attack of chemical weapons of people of Syria from their military a total of nearly 1,500 people killed, 426 of which were children. The media covered the decision President Obama had to make. A military strike or not. Sure the media talked about those who were lost in this tragic event portrayed by Bashar Al Assad, Dictator of Syria, however, right after Obama’s decision was taken off the table, the news ended. People continue to suffer from this dictator but the public nor the government seem to really care about those that are suffering.
Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey are holding in total over two million refugees, and more adding on everyday. Those two million are known to the world now as refugees. Two million people who are on the streets of countries with small populations and problems of their own. Lebanon alone has over one million refugees from Syria, with a addition of refugees from Palestine and other countries. Lebanon has a population of four million with a stronger economy than some of their neighbors, however, they are struggling with the addition of over one million new people and problems with bordering countries, Syria and Israel. Two million people are a lot! Even though Syria has a population of twenty two million, as of 2012, a decrease of two million is a lot. Two million is just over the size of Philadelphia. Now imagine all Philadelphians having to leave their homes with barely anything because it’s not safe for them. Imagine two million lives broken, without food, money, medicine or professions, leaving everything behind.

Living in the USA, we do not see that much news on the refugees. We do not see information on people who are suffering from Bashar Al Assad. This makes me want to learn more. I want to get down to the truth. I want to see the people we should be caring about, the people that are suffering. Read Abdulmajid’s, a fifteen year old Syrian refugee living with his family in Lebanon, here. The issue of war within a society of citizens is not something the media is covering. This is my chance to bring the real news, the news of those who are in pain, to not only the US but the world.

Syria is not the only country to have a civil war, in the past couple of years. There has been the civil war in Sierra Leone, civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nepal civil war and so many more. That means that I have to understand the media coverage of these wars. I have to understand if huge news outlets, such as CNN, talked about these civil wars. Throughout this project I will not only be talking about the horrible civil war in Syria, but I will be talking about the Congo, Sierra Leone, Nepal, Colombia, countries that have had their fair share of people suffered as well.
My goal at the end of this project is to fully understand who are really suffering from all of this. I must educate the public in appropriate ways to allow them to fully understand the struggles. I want to make a change in the right way. The people of Syria, and all that have suffered from civil wars, need someone to help them, to show that they care. That’s my job and it starts now.
Presentation About Me
For this project in technology class, my classmates and I had to design a slide all about us. With that slide we had to use methods of making a slide the best as possible as we had learned in previous lessons. That meant leaving some space, writing in large font, make it colorful and to use bleeding to make the slide strong. Using these methods I came up with this slide to represent me.
This presentation shows a example of glance media. There is one picture of the United Nations and my name. By there a reader would automatically understand my message with just one glimpse. There are only two words on the slide, “Gabrielle” and “Kreidie”, my name. This allows the reader to not have to read through a whole lot of words, only stare at the picture. The reader automatically gets the picture/idea. I was not being a wimp throughout this slide, I made things big. I made the slide colorful and I made the picture turned a bit showing a more flow in the wind of the flag. I allowed the picture to be bled, one did not have to see the entire pole from which the flag was flying across. There was some clear space around the flag not allowing the flag to take up the whole slide. This presentation, as I said earlier, shows the reader the ultimate message: I, Gabrielle Kreidie, have a admiration and love for the United Nations.
