Eleanor Shamble Capstone

Posted by Eleanor Shamble in Capstone · Menasion · Wed on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 9:44 pm

My Capstone was originally intended to be something else, but I switched it to an art portfolio I was already working on throughout the year to be shared at Free Library Of Comic Con. The majority of the art in here was done while I was unaware that it would be my Capstone, so it wouldn’t have been stuff I would choose to present normally. However, when I chose to switch, I realized that I shouldn’t be ashamed of myself, my art, or the things I enjoy. If someone finds the portfolio or anything in it cringeworthy, it’s their problem, not mine.

Learning new mediums was challenging. When I originally invested in the markers I ended up using, I had absolutely no idea how to use them, and knew hardly anything about them besides their unpleasant smell.Learning how to blend was an experience, because in my traditional art before this year, I blended hardly anything. It was also a struggle trying to translate the way I shade hair to different mediums because of how heavily it relied on cell shading.

All in all though, I like how my art progressed this year, and I’m proud of myself for overcoming the anxiety of presenting art I drew when I thought not many people I actually knew would see it.This Capstone was a lot of hours of work, but looking back, I enjoyed it too much for it to feel like it.

Art and Stuff- Shamble

Posted by Eleanor Shamble in Advanced Art · Hull · e2 Band on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 2:26 pm
This quarter I experimented more with various mediums to attempt to extend my abilities. I learned about texture and perspective, two very important elements to art. I tried to create as much variation as possible in my work.
There is no specific message linking these pieces, but I tried as hard as I could on them. They all came together for my final piece- the cat with flowers. I liked it so much that I made two more and submitted one to the 4th floor. It was overall a very productive quarter.

The Taming of the Groundhog

Posted by Eleanor Shamble in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 9:10 am

A comparison between Groundhog Day and Taming of the Shrew

The Taming of the Shrew has a bizarre title that sums up a large chunk of its plot. One of the main characters, Petruchio, ‘tames’ his wife Katherine through various tactics to be obedient and always agree to what he says. Two other characters, Lucentio and Bianca, had a very different relationship. Bianca was pursued by many suitors, but chose Lucentio because he was honest with her about who he was.

Groundhog Day is about a man named Phil who is stuck in a time loop where he is doomed to repeat the same day, groundhog day specifically, over and over and over. He is a news anchor and has a co worker named Rita, who he likes and tries to get closer to throughout the movie.

In Groundhog Day and The Taming of the Shrew, two specific tactics in relationships are used. Lucentio and Bianca’s relationship was built on honesty, while Petruchio and Katherine’s relationship was built on conflict prevention by one party, always Katherine, giving in to the other’s opinion. Lucentio and Bianca’s relationship was successful but was proved less so in the eyes of the book by the end. Both of these approaches were attempted by Phil, the protagonist in Groundhog Day so he could woo Rita, but unlike in the Shrew, the approach mirroring Petruchio and Katherine was inferior in the eyes of the movie. Essentially, in the time of the Shrew, consensus and agreement within a couple was valued over honesty and integrity, and in modern times, honesty and integrity is valued more.

“PETRUCHIO: Nay, then you lie. It is the blesséd sun.

KATHERINE: Then God be blest, it [is] the blesséd sun.”

(Act 4, Scene 5, Lines 20-21)

In this scene of The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio and Katherine had an argument. Petruchio declared that the sun was the moon, but Katherine disagreed because it was the sun. He kept pressing her until she agreed, and then flipped his stance the instant she did so. The argument continued on for a while, and Katherine still echoed Petruchio in every way during it. Even though she didn’t really agree with his outlandish observations, she went along with it anyway.

In doing this, Katherine conceded to Petruchio’s ideal of a marriage- where a woman agreed with her husband without complaint. Later in the play, Petruchio places a bet with other newlyweds saying that his wife was the most obedient. He won, and their relationship was shown as the most successful in the eyes of the play. After the bet was won, Katherine was asked by Petruchio to lecture the other women about what it meant to be a wife, and said the following.

“[When a woman is] not obedient to his honest will,

What is she but a foul contending rebel

And graceless traitor to her loving lord?”

(Act 5, Scene 2, Lines 174-176)

According to Katherine, one who does not bend over backwards for her husband is a traitor to him and a ‘foul contending rebel’. She would rather agree with her husband who is blatantly wrong than to disagree and start an argument.

Image result for groundhog day date gif

In Groundhog Day, Phil and Rita go out on a date that emcompasses several loops. They have a conversation centered around Rita and her interests. One specific thing that was brought up in it was her choice to major in french literature, which he ended up saying was dumb and she got mad at him for it. He didn’t like that, so in the next loop he pretended like he thought it was a good idea. The conversation continued throughout the loops in that manner, she would say something he thought was dumb and he would say so and get rejected, and then would amend what he was saying to tailor to her interests.

He was, in a way, seeking to tame himself to do what Petruchio made Katherine do, agree with his date in every way. This tactic didn’t work out as well as he hoped.

"BIANCA: Now let me see if I can consider it. Hic ibat Simois, I know you not; hic est [Sigeia] tellus, I trust you not; Hic [steterat] Priami, take heed he hear us not; regia, presume not; celsa senis despair not."

(Act 3, Scene 1, Lines 44-47)

In The Taming of the Shrew, Lucentio disguises himself as a tutor for Bianca in order to become closer to her and attempt to gain her affection. When he reveals his true identity, she responds with the above. In a nutshell, she doesn't know him so she can't trust him. This was the issue with Rita and Phil, too.

Image result for groundhog day slap gif

After Phil attempted to woo her by mimicking her opinions, she said basically the same thing Bianca did when Lucentio introduced his real self. She says that she doesn't know him and proceeds to slap him, several times over the course of several loops. She doesn't value him mimicking her, she'd rather get to know him for who he really is. At the end of the movie, when he becomes a genuinely nice person, she ends up actually liking him. He was much better off becoming nice than echoing her and pretending to be nice. Groundhog Day pushes the thesis that in order to have a successful relationship, people must grow as people instead of avoiding doing that by just agreeing with everything someone said.

In Groundhog Day, the protagonist was more successful when he was a genuinely good person rather than when he was pretending to be one. This shows that in a more modern viewpoint, honesty is valued over consensus in relationships, rather than in The Taming of the Shrew, where consensus was more valued.

Artist Statement and Slideshow- Shamble

Posted by Eleanor Shamble in Advanced Art · Hull · e2 Band on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 4:32 pm
This marking period, I tried to enhance the level of detail I put into my art. I tried my best to improve my coloring as well- so when I was supposed to color some art piece I tried to make it as vibrant and engaging as possible.I did not end up completing all of the assignments because I kept getting distracted by art that wasn't the assignment and did not fit the requirements of the assignment. (I put two such pieces in the slideshow.)
I also experimented with different mediums- I used crayons, colored pencils, scented markers, brushtip india ink markers, and pencil. Mostly this was to gage my capabilities with said mediums, and I liked my brushtip india ink markers the best out of all of them. Crayons were a close second.
What I need to improve on for next quarter is how to do my sketches so I end up with smoother, better lineart. That will probably be my biggest goal.

Final Project Q1-4 - Shamble

Posted by Eleanor Shamble in Advanced Art · Hull · e2 Band on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 10:33 pm
This quarter I didn't have a main focus for my artwork at all, so I'm going to talk about the individual pieces.
My ceiling tile was a birthday present to a friend, and it ended up being something like two weeks late. She's really into the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica (which is my fault), so I wanted to do something for that. The particular character I pained got beheaded and eaten in the anime, so the entire tile is a cruel, cruel joke. It was much more complicated for me than my tiles last year, which had much more simple designs and were just generally easier to paint. As a result of this, my tile last year didn't turn out as neat and nice as I would have hoped. It's not as symmetrical as it could have been, and some of the colors are wrong. However, the project as a whole looks pretty nice, so I guess I'm satisfied.
My self portrait was a pain to draw. I am used to much smaller canvases, and when I was given the size of the paper, I had no clue what to do, really. I just improvised, and it doesn't take up the entire paper, but it's something. I used a lot more blending techniques than I would normally because of the amount of space the drawing takes up and how tedious it would be to neatly shade everything with just the pencil. This is probably the piece I like the least out of all of them
My third piece wasn't assigned for this class, but it illustrates what I was figuring out on the side: markers. I've had two sets pf the particular markers I used since I was 13, and just have never gotten around to using them in depth. For the summer and most of this quarter, they have been my primary medium for coloring and I am very happy with them. They give a very clean and bright finish, and work very well with the way I shade hair. The character in this I made last year, and she has been one of my primary subjects for my marker art because of her color palette. She is incredibly fun to draw, and I hope to use her for an actual assignment sometime this year.
Overall, I haven't seen glaring improvement in my work this quarter, but am overall satisfied with it. I'm excited for what I'm doing next.

Reading Profile: Kali

When reading, Kali doesn’t like silence or a cold temperature, it makes it harder for her to concentrate on her book, and being tired or preoccupied makes it worse. Her ideal environment would be warm with white noise, and she would prefer to have all of her work done first.

While she often enjoys what she reads, some books grate on her nerves. Go Ask Alice, is a pretty good example of a book she hated. She found it dry, and the ending didn’t satisfy her. She had to read it through to the end for English last year, but she would have probably dropped the book sooner if she could.

When she gets to it, she does enjoy reading. She has a tendency to just forget to keep reading a book, and is somewhat ashamed of that. To improve herself as a reader, she would like to be able to persevere through something she isn’t fond of, or just any book in general.

I enjoy my ILP as much as ever! I really like teaching the children and watching them grow. This semester I didn't do as much actual teaching, because they're much more experienced than they were at the beginning of the year.
Even with that though, I think I have a deeper knowledge of scratch because of how I explore the stuff they are learning at a more advanced level.

This quarter I didn't really have a specific focus. I just drew what I felt like drawing. So naturally, two of the pieces (the collage and the illustration) were fandom related. I tried a few new things. For example, for the photo editing, I edited my cat and didn't make her rainbow (which is what I usually do with this app...). But mostly, all I did was express myself and what I was feeling at the time.

Art

Posted by Eleanor Shamble in Advanced Art - Hull - a1 on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 8:52 pm

When I started these assignments, there was no real goal. I don’t think there actually is any huge symbolic meaning to them at all.

To be honest, most of what I did was pour myself into the art, my interests, my hobbies, my awkwardness, whatever.

And with being basically raised with the internet, and coming to SLA, I have discovered that there are a lot of people like me.

I want to be relatable to these people, and… reach out to them. Make them smile a tiny bit when they see my art. Make them laugh, and cringe in a sort of not sympathy that comes with understanding.

I want to laugh a bit with my friends about that one time I spent four hours painting a pony head and putting it on the ceiling, or the other time I just sat alone in health, and decided that drawing cats was a higher priority than doing actual project work.

I want to be comfortable with myself, which I’m not always, and art makes it fun and lighthearted sometimes.

This is what’s going on inside my head.

  •  What went well?
I had a discussion with him and we thought out basic lesson plans. We didn't actually do anything last time. but we have a solid idea of what we are doing today. I'm super excited to help teach scratch!!
  • What are you looking forward to?
tEACHING SCRATCH!!!! And also just learning how. And meeting the kids.
  • What stands out that has happened so far?
The awkwardness of going back there, kind of. The person at the front desk was someone that I remember from my school career there. Also Mr.Landis's desk was fantastically messy.
  • Add what you think is important.
I'm not sure if he emailed jeremy yet.

Philadelphia Street Cars

Posted by Eleanor Shamble in African American History - Jonas - A on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 9:39 pm
Untitleddocument

Philadelphia was one of the worst cities to be a different race in the Northeast during the Reconstruction Era. One of the major issues there (or, alternatively, the one that gathered many protests) was the Philadelphia street cars being segregated. Because of the climate, the opinion columns pictured were actually a bit more liberal than would’ve been acceptable at the time, and the second one wouldn’t likely be published in a neutral newspaper.

The political cartoon may be a bit unclear. The real message is that the street car in itself does not symbolize equal rights, but getting into it does. A door is drawn on the street car, and is labeled equal rights (the picture is low quality and I apologize). This is supposed to be a symbol more than anything else; getting onto the street car wouldn’t automatically create equal rights for every citizen of the United States. However, it would be (and was) a victory and a statement. If the street cars could be desegregated, then other things could get done, too.

Also, on the opinions, we still see the racist one today. It may take different forms, the homophobe, for example, but what they say is always the same. “We gave them enough, they don’t need more.” This is dangerous, the way they’re playing it. They act like they’re trying to preserve peace.

Something I inserted in there was the comment about ‘our lord’ on the other one. This was just so it would feel more 1800s-ish while the newspaper looked ridiculously modern.

Not to say that the segregated street cars weren’t an issue, because they were, and people were suffering because of it.

Many people famous for their efforts during Reconstruction were involved i this mess, including William Still.

This mattered during the reconstruction era not just because it was a problem, but because it got better with the Civil Rights leaders at the time’s efforts. It helped people hope, and you know, get to where they needed to go.

a. What do you feel like you accomplished with your final drawing?
No, I do not feel accomplished at all- this is not my area of expertise at all. However, I did something okay but I do not have the technical term for it. Oops.
b. What would you change or differently if you could do this project again?
I figured out too late how to do the window- I would do it right the next time. Also I would stay in the art room at lunch one more time to fill in some more details.
c. Find a drawing on the wall that you think is successful. Describe it. Why is it successful?
Kate's drawing is successful. It is the wall by the sink, and it is drawn with clear lines. It looks clean, and it doesn't look like she hesitated. Mine is incredibly sloppy.
d. What did you learn about one point perspective?
We do not see in it at all and drawing windows with it can be difficult if you base it on real life. It is more challenging than it looks.

Net Neutrality

Bob, the fourteen year old, wanted to explore various social media outlets, the kind that no one uses, so he could be cool. Bob surfed the web happily, first finding Tumblr, then clicking on another site. This site takes forever to load, so Bob takes a bag of chips and leans back into his chair. When it was finished loading, he decided that it wasn't worth the wait. Bob lives in a world without net neutrality. The website he was trying to visit wasn't on the fast lane, meaning that it was on the slow lane. Because the website was slowed, he didn't deem it worth his time. The website was actually just as awesome as Tumblr, but the sluggish speed of it made it less appealing. The simple reason for the website being slow: it didn't have enough money to pay for a place on the fast lane. It could make it big, but it didn't have the opportunity.
Liberty (who finds her name a bit strange) wanted to watch Netflix one day. She had Comcast as her Internet Service Provider. She hit enter, and waited for Netflix to load. It didn't. She waited a bit longer. It still didn't. Suspicious, she tried Comcast on Demand. It took half a second to load.
These are the stories of two fictional teenagers who didn't have net neutrality. While it may not feel like it matters when explained to a teenager, it really does. Without it, these things will happen. However, the two scenarios above won't be the only ones. There will be so many more, because corporations have a goal of making as much money as possible. Net Neutrality is the reason this doesn't happen right now.

mind mapping software
Explain your L.A.N. Local Area Network - all the devices on your internet connection. Take this from the 1st assignment, when I sent you home to list the parts of your network.
The internet connection extends to my desktop computer (through a wire), and four nooks, three laptops, two smartphones, and a Wii. There is also two televisions and house phones connected by the same deal that pays for the internet.

Reflect on what you learned about networks, did you have an OMG moment that you learned something new and interesting? if so write about what you learned.

I learned that networks are ore complicated than they seem. I thought they traveled in the air or something, but as it turns out, it travels through underground pipelines. That was an omg moment, especially when I learned that it travels at the speed of light. That's pretty fast.

What would you tell other people that they need to know about having an ISP/Home network?

It's more expensive and complicated that it looks, and do your research when looking for a company to use. It's not just about memes, even though memes are fun.
