Boubou Magassa's Capstone

Posted by Boubou Magassa in CTE Senior Capstone · Kamal/Shagin/Ugworji · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 9:59 pm

For my senior Capstone Project, I wanted to help the thousands of homeless people in the city of philadelphia. I had first wanted to make a bed out of something recyclable, so I had chose car tires. I had then pitched my idea to Braskem and got tons of support from the company and from family and friends, but it was a short lived dream because it was not possible to get the tires professionally cut the way that I needed. So now onto a new idea I had thought of making something lightweight and affordable so I had chose a bed made out of PVC. I had lots of trouble with getting the bed to sustain weight and also support itself and also a person. After multiple design changes and testing I had come up with a final design that met all the goals that I needed. I plan to donate my bed to a homeless shelter because there are hundreds of homeless people turned away from shelters because of lack of beds. My bed would provide another resting place, but also the ability to pack it up and make it easy for storage.

Reconstruction Of Memory - Boubou Magassa

Posted by Boubou Magassa in College English · Pahomov/Rhymer · C Band on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 12:54 pm

I woke up in a room with blaring lights and the pungent smell of medicine. There is a short old man with white hair and a coat to match. He tells me that he is a doctor and that I was brought in by one of the townsmen. I look to my side and notice that my right arm is missing. The memories came flooding back into my mind. Why does it hurt? The doctor then asks what happened to me.

I was young and wanted to write a book about a lonely mountain man. To gain inspiration I had moved into a cabin on a snowy mountain. I remember vividly the day of the incident. Why does it hurt? It was a regular day, just like all the other days. I had just left the town with some groceries. The path home was a treacherous one, cold and punishing as the snowflakes cut my face, and my visibility was cut down to a mere 5 meters. I only see a maze of trees ahead. Except for one tree, this tree was somewhat different. It was shorter and wider than the others. I wanted to examine it more for my book. I left the trail and headed towards this mysterious tree. When I finally got close enough to get a good look, it was no longer a tree but a bear towering over me. It let out a mighty roar. A chill ran down my spine as I was frozen in fear. I had then put my arms up to my face and felt a sharp pain as the bear’s jagged and unkempt teeth entered my flesh. All I can remember was the pain in my right arm. Why does it hurt? I had almost given up as my vision went blurry, I then remembered my pocket knife. I had grasped it and lunged the blade into the bears right eye. As the bear was stunned I had ran in any direction as long as I was running. I had ran for a couple miles. My movements grew sluggish and the feeling in my right arm had disappeared. I had peered overed, it was all mangled and didn’t resemble an arm anymore. My eyes could no longer stay open, my eyes wanted to rest, my eyes wanted to drift. I fell onto the snowy ground as my body began to freeze. I took one last look and saw someone approaching and tell my eyes it’s okay to rest.

Author’s Note

This is an original piece, I was never been attacked by a bear. I was inspired to emulate the repetitive language that Atwood had used. The repetition had allowed for a more poetic approach. I also incorporated the sudden change from present to memory.

Advanced Essay #3: [Changing Masculinity?]

Posted by Boubou Magassa in English 3 · Block · E Band on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 2:32 am
Introduction

I wanted to explore what masculinity was and how we could change it because of how it is affecting the lives of men today.

Advanced Essay

Why are there many cases where men are seen as villains? The answer to this question is masculinity. I say this because according to a site called Sat Puruha said that masculinity can be defined as “Masculinity varies for each man dependent on personality, family, and culture. The common thread is a set of characteristics that allow men to feel masculine.” Males were raised in the past to be tough, unemotional, and above all else dominant. While the definition of femininity is constantly changing according to Michael Ian Black from The New York Times “The past 50 years have redefined what it means to be female in America. Girls today are told that they can do anything, be anyone. They’ve absorbed the message: They’re outperforming boys in school at every level. But it isn’t just about performance. To be a girl today is to be the beneficiary of decades of conversation about the complexities of womanhood, its many forms, and expressions.” This makes me wonder why masculinity isn’t being changed even though it is making males into rapists, sex offenders, and etc. Why can’t masculinity change along with femininity?

Masculinity can make men feel like they don’t have someone to prove their dominance too. So they then to take that frustration other out on the people around them. From a source that I found about “Toxic Masculinity” is that "People who conform to masculinity have poor mental health.". Masculinity is breaking down the psyche of the men today. It is said that in order for someone to be a man they must take specific character traits like  “The wince-inducing "male" traits are as follows: winning, emotional control, risk-taking, violence, dominance, playboy, self-reliance, the primacy of work, power over women, and disdain for homosexuals.” These traits are all seen in supposedly in masculine men. Men use these traits to hide moments when they feel weak. So that they don’t attract help. From Dr. Joel Wong’s study proved that “Sexual promiscuity, self-reliance, and power over women were most categorically linked to frail mental health.” With men walking around with weak mental health trying to prove themselves every day only makes matters worse and make them easier to break.

Masculinity was normal back when men were always seen as dominant and had no ramifications for his actions when it came to abusing woman or children because they were always at the top of the food chain. But now in a society where genders are equal and balanced, these type of actions are no longer acceptable. “They are trapped, and they don’t even have the language to talk about how they feel about being trapped because the language that exists to discuss the full range of human emotion is still viewed as sensitive and feminine.” The thing about masculinity is that it doesn’t allow or give men a way to talk about how he feels without feeling vulnerable or emasculated. Masculinity is stopping men from growing up with compassion and learning how to accept help when it is provided instead of bottling up the pain until it is too much, some men even take their lives because of stress that could have been easily avoided if they just reached out to someone. All of these things could almost be simply solved but, this reality of masculinity makes it almost impossible.

“A man who feels lost but wishes to preserve his fully masculine self-has only two choices: withdrawal or rage. We’ve seen what withdrawal and rage have the potential to do.” Men take out their rage in other ways like forcibly dominating someone else and a common sight of that today are school shootings.  Men that feel weak or threatened will always strike back. That is why school shooters do these horrible acts of violence to somehow prove to others that they are masculine. Hundreds of years ago people gained respect and honor from the number of people that they have killed but, that was in a “dog eat dog world” we now have more civilized ways of solving things without the need of bloodshed but, how can we move on if we don’t change the barbaric ways of our past.

Masculinity is a system that we don’t need anymore. It was used to justify the horrible acts that occurred in the past like destruction of villages, the raping of women, and the cruel monarchies that once stood. We as humans have evolved and learned so many more things but masculinity hasn’t. Femininity has changed so much for the better and has improved the lives of many women, while men are still suffering from a rule made hundreds of years ago. Why does no make an effort to change it? That is because masculinity is something hard to let go and men are afraid of how life will be for them after the change. With nothing too dominate or oppress, men will feel hopeless but if we don’t allow us the opportunity to change then how will we even know if it was for the better.

Advanced Essay #2 Boubou Magassa - English without Diversity

Posted by Boubou Magassa in English 3 · Block · E Band on Monday, December 11, 2017 at 1:50 am
Introduction

I wanted to answer the question revolving around my whole essay, What would English sound like if there were never any diversity? I believe that without diversity we would not have the two types of English that we have today.

Essay

English is a language that has developed over a period of millions of years. Throughout those years, English has morphed through the diversity of races. When slaves were forcefully taken from their homeland, and were brought to America, they didn't know how to communicate with their masters or fellow workers. Over time, they learned things around their environments by just listening. Everything they heard couldn’t have been received perfectly this were some of the first appearances of what we as Americans today call “Slang”. Without diversity, slang and other creative concepts of the American English would have never been created and also allowing it to be considered in a way its own language.

A quote from “If Black English Isn’t a Language” touched on my theory, that without diversity the American English would have never been created and also allowing it to be considered in a way its own language. “Blacks came to the United States chained to each other, but from different tribes: Neither could speak the other’s language.” The mixture of tribes caused even more diversity than just the blacks converging with the whites. Because of the mini diversities, there was even more turmoil because it would make it even harder for them to communicate and accomplish their tasks. In the future, this intelligible english had become normal and is even being considered the way all americans speak. Without the failed attempts of the slaves speaking english there wouldn’t be differences between British English and American English.

It was a normal day - I was doing my homework on the kitchen table as my Dad was reviewing some documents. My mom was cooking dinner and my little brother was already passed out on the couch.

“Babou, can you give me the envelope(ON-vuh-lohp),” said my Dad. Looking intensely at some sort of document.

“Pass you which one,” I said as I begin to rise from my chair.

“Give me the envelope(ON-vuh-lohp),” Said my Dad. He turned staring at me.

“Ohhh, you want the envelope(EN-VUH-lohp),” I said. The storm of confusion had finally drifted away.

“Yes, the envelope(ON-vuh-lohp),” Said my Dad. He looked sort of annoyed as if someone had played “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley on repeat for a couple of hours.

“Why do you say it like that? ”I said as my lightbulb of curiosity had lit up.

“What do you mean?” inquired my Dad.

“How you say envelope(EN-VUH-lohp), you say it differently,” I said.

“That’s the way I was taught in school, I learned British English when I was young,” said my Dad.

“Why are you taught that type of english instead of the english that Americans speak?” I replied.

“I believe that we learn this type of english instead because it is more proper than the English that Americans today speak,” Said my father.

A quote from “How To Tame A Wild Tongue” talks about experiences of Chicanas have growing up speaking their language. “Chicanas who grew up speaking Chicano Spanish have internalized the belief that we speak poor Spanish.” Chicanas in the spanish community have to live with the stereotypes all the time with people saying to them that there language is improper and incorrect even though it is also said to be the purist. Just like American English after years and years of developing it is still to this day being called improper and incorrect even though it is one of the most popular languages in the world. The differences that they had didn’t just make it a language derived from British English but, a language of its own.

When I started off writing this essay I wanted to show you what english would sound like if there was never any diversity within the people. I had talked about evolution and changes that caused english to become what it is today. As I continued onward I talked about how in America people try to prevent more spread of slang or improper english by getting rid of the accents of foreign people. What I was left thinking was without diversity the American English would have never been created and also allowing it to be considered in a way its own language. My father who was taught the supposedly proper of two englishes has learned that American English isn’t improper it is no longer below British English but, of equal footing. My father now speaks with the tongue of a person who speaks slang and American english. As I end off I want you to think what life would be like if people were only taught British English and are not allowed to alter it. What do you think the image of America would look like. Would it still be considered improper because of other things or would it truly be appreciated for what it is, A way for people of different cultures to communicate and learn from each other.

Advanced Essay #1: Ordinary?

Posted by Boubou Magassa in English 3 · Block · E Band on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 11:05 pm
Boubou Magassa Intro

My name is Boubou Magassa. I wanted to make people understand the importance of ordinary things. Because things like sand, wood, and water many people are under appreciated. Simple objects like these can be changed into glass, houses, and tables. I want to prove that nothing in this world is simple.

Ordinary?

In this world, there are a lot of machines that are considered “ORDINARY,” but are they really? Because of these incredible machines, we as humans are able to live life to the fullest and they make it easier. There are a lot of people that use vehicles and other forms of transportation. The machines that most people consider ordinary are actually complex. The simple components of these machines are what make them complex because they can be able to have multiple purposes.
As I opened my front door, I heard banging and drilling. I thought the day would be just the same as any other day! Me sitting alone and doing homework. I then swung the door open and locked it behind. As I walk in, I see many men covered in dust as if they used sawdust instead of confetti. They continued their work as I walked to the kitchen. I saw my countertop gone. It had been removed. I place where I used to fall, stub my toes, and cut myself. When I turned to the man who looked like he was in charge. “What are you doing,” I said. He looked at me confused and said. “We are remodeling your kitchen.” I had then remembered my mom telling me about that. “Okay, so that is today.” The men then brought a beautiful granite countertop that just shined in the light. From that day on I used my countertop for everything from cooking to cleaning.
My countertop is something very ordinary because every house has one. To me, my countertop is a work of art. My countertop is used for everything. I appreciate it because it has its purposes but, it is also a beautiful work of art. It's pleasing to the eyes and makes you want to view nature. Rock has a very long and structured history in our world. Rock was used for weapons, crafting, and hunting. For millions of years, rocks were needed to maintain life on earth.
Another memory about an ordinary object I appreciated was a bike. It was a boring summer day of my middle school career. I and my brothers were watching a cheesy horror movie called Mega Piranha on Syfy but then my brother got a call. It was from my Mom. “Baba, bring a hammer to the salon,” she said. “Okay.” My brother had then gone to go get his things ready. Then I and my other brothers asked: “Can we go to?”. My brother had then replied with a “Fine but, hurry up.” As we heard those words leave his mouth. We charged upstairs on the hunt for some clothes. After 10 minutes of our successful hunt we were ready. We had gotten our bikes and were ready to set off on our journey. We started to ride to South Philly. The ride wasn't too long maybe 45 minutes to 1 hour. When we finally got there. “Oh, there you are. Thank you.” said my Mom We were exhausted and also happy to see our mother happy. My Dad had then came out of the shop. “ WOW, you guys rode your bikes all the way here,” My Dad said.
“Thank you very much for helping us.” My Dad said. “No problem at all.” Me and my brothers replied. Soon after, we had rode our bikes home to go find another cheesy movie to watch.
A bike is a great simple machine. When a person needs to get around they are able to use these simple machines to travel easy. If there is traffic a bike could have easily gotten past it . The bike also slows down the processes of global warming. All of these amazing things done by one simple and ordinary machine. This ordinary machine like a bike also saves people lots and lots of money. On average a person with a car uses 558 gallons of gasoline which adds up to a total of $2,120.40. And a whooping $545.70 go straight the government. These ordinary machines saves us 2,000+ dollars a year. Bikes are no way in hell ordinary.
What is “ordinary”? I hope after reading this that you have come to a conclusion that there is no thing called ordinary because all ordinary thing as actually really complex. Here is a quote that I was told before “There is no thing as nothing because if you are doing nothing then you are still doing something because, that something is nothing.” Things are not as they seem when you look at them in a different light. Something like a table. Which is considered ordinary took years and years to be perfected into what it is today. There and coffee tables, desks, and many more types of tables. Then why is it considered ordinary because it is commonly seen everywhere. Then if that were true wouldn’t that mean that humans are ordinary. Then why do we say we are a special and unique. That is because “ordinary is “special and unique”.

“Oh hey, Mr. Potuy.”

“My day is going good.”

(Kicks soccer ball)

“How do you like that shot.”

(Kicks another soccer ball)

“Score!”

“Um, sorry I got too excited.”

“Hey coach, what position did you play on your team.”

“Wow, I wouldn't have taken you as a striker type of guy.”

“Well, you just that you seem like a defense guy.”

“What, you were a star player.”

“What were your total score count.”

“473!!!!!!”

“Oh, wow, it’s late,”

Café Mosqueto

Chile’s capital is like no other; surrounded by the white peaks of the Andes, the bustling metropolis is a vast mosaic of winding streets and tall buildings. The landscape of Chilean cuisine is equally exciting. Mixing Spanish influences with excellent native recipes, the freshest of ingredients with exotic fruits and fish, it offers tantalizing combinations best enjoyed with a glass of acclaimed Chilean wine. Here are the ten best restaurants in Santiago.

Bocanáriz

Chile is famous for its wine, so it comes as no surprise that a wine specialist has made it onto this list of Santiago’s best restaurants. Bocanáriz is one of the capital’s most famous places to enjoy the best wine that Chile has to offer. Locals and curious tourist gather to taste local wines in a comfortable urban setting, where bare brick walls and heavy wooden tables are combined with the seemingly ill-fitting but ultra cool crystal chandelier. A true gastronomic and oenological journey through the country, Bocanariz menu has been designed to perfectly fit the different types of wine that Chilean vineyards produce every year.

Bajo Llave

Located in the hip neighborhood of Barrio Lastarria, this cozy bar is the perfect place to take a break from Santiago’s bustling streets. The hidden and subterranean character of the location adds to Bajo Llave dark and cave-like charm, making it the perfect place to combine a meal with the first few drinks of the evening. Locals drop by to enjoy a beverage chosen from the huge selection of national beers and wines. Of course, Bajo Llave also offers generous meals for the hungry. Next to pizzas and tapas that fuse Mediterranean and Chilean cuisine, guests can also order more traditional meat dishes.

El Diablito

While Barrio Lastarria is the current It spot in Santiago. El Diablito was already there in 1984. It would not be an exaggeration to state that this restaurant contributed to the development of the now fashionable district. Famous for its traditional beers, local specialties such as pisco sour casero and the carne a la diabla, El Diablito is the perfect place to meet young locals in an alternative and laid-back atmosphere. A special mention goes to the decoration of the restaurant, somewhere between a cabinet of curiosities and an antique dealer’s mysterious shop.

The place to be for gourmand hedonists, Victorino offers a menu made of the best dishes that South American cuisine has to offer. The ingredients selection is exquisite, their presentation simple but classy, and the setting of the restaurant is an absolute must-see: Located in a maze-like antique house surrounded by historical monuments, Victorino is without any doubt the most romantic place to discover the delicate traditional food in the Lastarria neighborhood.

¿por qué soy diferente?

Mi familia ésta hablando de sus dia.

Veo a la gente con un potencial mucho.

Growing Up Online Reflection

      Growing Up Online
1. What was this show about? It was about how kids in the era of the beginning of internet were being taken over by it. It was also saying that kids were also influenced bad by it.

2. What is the most memorable thing to you about this show? When there was that girl who was an "ana" person. She had a disorder which make people think their fat and fast and starve themselves so they can look perfect.

3. Why/Why not -  is it important to watch shows like these? It is important to make people aware of the dangers that are in things that we eat, see, and use everyday. It makes us more cautious so we don't make horrible mistakes.

4. How will you keep your future family safe online? I will teach them to be more cautious and watch out for scams. If I'm able to I will teach them to know code so they can see if sites are scamming them. I will also have filters to block out most of the bad sites. But, for the most of it I will let them have fun.

5. Why is it important to talk with your family about internet safety? It can help a lot because it will prevent rape, murder or even bankruptcy.

6. What advice would you give to parents that don't know how to keep their children safe online? To first learn how to use the internet and find the best blockers and find games that are fun and interactive for your kid so they will play that then going on the web. I don't know because there are many things you can do, but first just know your child.

Final Slide Design

Posted by Boubou Magassa in Technology - Freshman - Hull - y2 on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 3:30 pm
1. What I learned from the critique of my slide was that my old slide didn't look clean or nice because the pictures weren't aligned. The slide had spots of my background everywhere so I had to cover those up. They also said that I should give the background a color so it can blend into the pictures. I also make the words bigger and aligned it directly in the middle of the slide. They also gave me recommendations for anime pictures to add.

2. I agreed that the slide had some problems. The aligned of everything was so off and looked very sloppy. I also agreed when they said that the color around my name was bland so I changed the color to make it look nice.

Boubou’s Presentation (1)
This One Slide has almost all the characteristics that make up me I love anime and video games. Those are basically my life but I have other things. But, these are the things that stick out the most. I love where I come from and take pride in that. I like to say that I reside in the gaming and anime culture I enjoy watching a Japanese superhero show for kids called "Kamen Rider" they curse in it but, Japanese people don't really care. They also curse in the Japanese "Power Rangers" series that america takes and edits. I love the anime culture so much that some times I dream of going to the birthplace of anime and even live there. I love the Japanese culture. They feel nature in everything they make meals from the foods the come out in the different seasons and the people eating can some how sense the season as if they are in the snowy season  or the heat season too. The Japanese are very spiritual and I would try to make manga if I were able to draw. I was introduced to gaming when I was about 6 or 7 but, I played it a lot and gaming became part of my identity.

2. That it is horrible and can cause people to hurt themselves.

3. I'm not very social and don't have a huge life an the internet.
