Alexandrea Rivera- Capstone

Posted by Alexandrea Rivera in Capstone · Block · Wed on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 10:44 am

Abstract:

Homelessness is a huge problem in the world, especially the city of Philadelphia. This is a topic that is talked about but not much is done. Most times when homelessness is talked about it is brought up in a negative light instead of looking deeper into solutions or preventions. The main purpose of my Capstone was to raise awareness not only to the SLA community but friends and family as well. I was able to do this by getting in contact with a homeless service called Chosen 300. At Chosen 300 they give out free homemade meals and service for those who are less fortunate. I loved the idea of helping inside the organization but there was something else that I felt needed to be done.

To take actions into my own hands, I decided to put together a bake sale in SLA, by first scheduling a day, sending out posters advertising and purchasing the baked goods. The turnout was so good that I ended up selling everything that day! With this money, I purchased canned goods and treats to bring into Chosen 300. I was also collecting clothes from SLA students and family members at the same time to later bring in. I think that everything was very successful and I was able to achieve the goals of my Capstone through the help of everyone who participated and who lent a helping hand to better understand the different options there are to helping homelessness.

This is an article that was done earlier this year in 2019, that speaks more on homeless families and students. They give many facts and statistics that help get a better understanding of how serious this is and that yes there are emergency shelters but these shelters should be something to help families along to getting a permanent home. They also bring up the important role the City Of Philadelphia plays into funding these shelters and how some people are denied access to shelters.

Michaelgainer@projecthome.org. “Facts on Homelessness.” Project HOME, 5 Sept. 2018, projecthome.org/about/facts-homelessness.

When looking through this website I was able to get more information that I needed to better inform the viewers of my Capstone. It talks about how the lack of affordable health care, lack of affordable housing and domestic violence are the causes of homelessness not just drug addiction.

“CHOSEN 300 MINISTRIES, INC.” Chosen 300 Ministries Home Page, www.chosen300.org/ourmission.html.

This website is for the organization I worked with to be able to complete my Capstone. Throughout this website, I was able to gather different events that are held inside and outside of Chosen 300. It also gives the background of how it was created and founded explaining the services that they provide and what their mission is.

“Weather – Code Blue.” Go to ., philadelphiaofficeofhomelessservices.org/services/weather-code-blue/.

This article Weather-Code Blue on the website called The Office of Homeless Services describes the process of what happens in extreme weather especially when it’s cold. They have volunteers pick up the homeless, struggling in this cold weather, and give out an outreach number. They have that they are open 24 hours 7 days a week displayed on the website, letting everyone know that they will always have somewhere to stay. But they also mention that there are not enough beds, and how the buildings are very old. Since these buildings are so old these services have tried to keep up with them with the money that they have but it’s not enough, these buildings are still having outages and floods throughout these horrendous times.

Reconstruction of Memory- Angel

Posted by Alexandrea Rivera in College English · Pahomov/Rhymer · B Band on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 8:57 pm

I always get this way when I'm lost. I'm so tired of having to relive this moment forever. When I was I think just four years old, I had lived with my parents.  Parents, who am I kidding? They weren't ever really parents to me. There was the one time that my mother tried to make me feel like I was her child by offering me her needle full of what would ultimately kill her in the end. “What a mother,” I always thought. As for my “father” he was never in the “house”.  He was always out selling somewhere, usually on the corner of 3rd and Benson. Or was it 6th and Benson? I don't know, all I know is that it was next to the house with the red awning. Eventually, I was placed in the foster care system. I had no place to go and no one to really turn to. Except for Angel. Angel had always been there for me. She helps me through my toughest days but causes me so much pain at the same time. It’s so hard to let her go. The other day, I found myself talking to her. She helped me make everything I was worried about go away.  I was taken to my happy place. Everyone tells me she's bad for me and that I need to get my life together, but I'm lost without her just like I was lost without my “parents". I've finally found someone to rely on. Why would I want to leave that?

It doesn't matter because I’m never going to leave her!

It's time to talk to Angel again.  As I reach into my pocket to get her, I hear someone talking to me.

“Yes?” I say as I lift my head to look up.

“Hey Junkie, you can't stay here! This is public property you need to go somewhere else!” he screams at me from down the street.

Authors Note:

Throughout the story I used past tense words to show that the narrator was having a flashback within that flashback I described an early childhood moment because that is what shapes human beings. I chose to mention the narrator's feelings toward her parents to show she has never had anyone to rely on and this is how she had developed this relationship to Angel. Angel is not a person but is described as one to hide it from the reader until the end of the story. I decided to have the narrator describe Angel as a person to show the connection between her and Angel (the drug she uses). I chose to write this story this way because I wanted the reader to follow the memory and then when coming to the end of the story realize how the story connects to what the narrator is going through in current time.

Best Personal Essay Ever-What's Going To Happen Tomorrow?

Posted by Alexandrea Rivera in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 9:33 pm

December 20th, 2016 was a great day. I remember being in my English class talking to my friends in the back of the classroom sitting on a red sofa. It was at 10:26 am, I went onto Snapchat and took a picture of one of my friend he was wearing blue Adidas pants with a grey hoodie while my other friend ended up being in the picture because she had her head on his lap playing games on her phone. She was wearing black leggings and a pink Adidas hoodie. I showed them the pictured and we all laughed. I continued my day like any other, going to lunch then going to three other classes then school was finished. After school, I would do the usual and walk with my boyfriend to 15th street City Hall.

We would part ways and I would meet up with my mom, we would ask each other how our days went as we walked to 13th and market to her car. That day my mom had asked me if she should go see mom-mom and my mom had been doing so much with the house and the bills and working, and on top of this still taking care of me and my dad making sure we had dinner every night. So I told her that we just saw her on Thursday and she was doing good and that the doctor had just called today and said she was ready to move out because she was improving a lot.  So me and my mom made some pizza and ate it on the couch while we watched tv. The night was normal, I went to bed a little early and was in a really deep sleep, a sleep I hadn't had in awhile.

Then in the middle of the night of December 21st, 2016 I was woken up by screeching cries and shouts of “No, this isn't real!” I sat up trying to get myself out of sleep mode and focus on what was happening. I then realized something bad- really bad had happened and I had the idea of what I thought it was. I went to my mom and dad's room as the screaming and crying was still happening and getting louder as I got closer. I saw my dad trying to hold my mom up from falling on the floor because she couldn't stand. She was the one crying and screaming because what she heard couldn't be true it didn't make any sense. We all immediately went to the hospital to see her. We walked in and told the nurse at the front desk who we were coming to see and everyone got so quiet then they took us back to the room. Pulled back the curtain and there she was. It looked like she was sleeping but she wasn't and even when seeing her I myself thought that this wasn't real. The days that followed I felt like I was in someone else's body just looking out their eyes.

The start of it all. She was supposed to go in to get stents put in her legs and it was supposed to be a day in day out surgery. Then there was something else that was wrong, and then very rapidly there were all of these problems popping up. The hospital became her life. I went to see her in the beginning but over the time it got harder and harder to see her like that and not being able to talk to anyone due to her having a tube. I tried to blur it out and not think about the pain she was going through and not trying to have that image stuck in my head. I knew that she would have never wanted that. It was December 15th, 2016 my mom told me that I should come with her to visit. So that's what I did I got dressed got her Christmas present in a bag and we headed out to the car. While we were in the car I was so nervous, and I was never nervous to go and see her. I was always excited and she was someone I could be myself around. But I was nervous that she would look at me differently because I hadn't come to see her, and I could understand why she would have felt that way. So we got there I sat there for about 5 minutes and then we finally entered the hospital. We got to the front desk and told them what our names were and who we were coming to see they gave us visitor stickers with our names on them so that the workers would know that we weren't just some random people.

My mom had known where her room was because she had been there to see her before and the times before when she went to see her she said that she hasn't really been doing that well, she would have her good and bad days. When she was going to see her she was telling my mom how she missed her daughter Julie and would talk about her granddaughter Alex and how she missed her.The problem wasn't that she was talking about her feelings and what had happened between all of these people. But my mom is Julie and that's what the problem was. So I thought that when we were going to enter the room that she wasn't going to know who I was. But as soon as we walked into the room she knew who we were and she was excited to see us. I went over gave her a hug and kiss and so did my mom. We started talking about what she would do in the hospital and she said she would watch tv and color in the coloring books my mom bought for her. Both me and my mom were standing up talking to her and she kept telling me “Oh sweetheart, sit down right here.” She was moving the sheets and her feet so that I could have a place to sit and that I would be comfortable. My mom said to her “Alex has a Christmas present she wants to give to you.” So I handed her the bag with her present in it. I took it out for her. It was a beanie baby snowman with big eyes and a Santa hat on its head. She said she loved it, but she didn't want to keep it there because she didn't want someone to take it or for it to get lost when she moved out of the place. So we spent a little more time there and then it was time to leave. I kissed her and hugged her. She kept saying she loved me and kept blowing me kisses and I said I loved her and did it back. Then my mom kissed her and hugged her and they said I love you to each other and me and my mom headed to the car to go home.

Six days after we saw my mom-mom that's when it happened. December 21st,2016 at 2:18 am is when my mom-mom passed away. This was a day that I didn't even think about, that I didn't think would happen for a long time. I thought I had years and years left with her. So much time that she would be able to go to my wedding to be able to see my first child and so many years that I could travel with her and take her to places shed dreamt to go. These are things that I think about all of the time. I miss her so much. The pain in your heart and missing someone you were so close to doesn't ever go away. But you can try to distract your heart and mind with good memories and laughs you remember.

Blood Rush Or Nothing

Posted by Alexandrea Rivera in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 12:16 pm

At a very young age, many people discover horror. Whether it be spine-chilling
movies, a creepy looking mask, or a Halloween walkthrough at their local school.
Some people get a sense that they aren't ever going to like horror and being scared and then there are others who live for fear and spooks. Some even like to take it to the next level and scare themselves with not only horror and thriller films but haunted houses. These haunted houses tend to mess with one's imagination and become reality when going through them, which is exactly why they are an enduring form of horror.
Going to haunted houses are something that people can only go to for about a month in the fall time. This gives them all the reasons more to go to as many as they can before the season ends. These haunted houses are typically on farms in what looks like in the middle of nowhere. They decorate the farms to look fun for pumpkin picking in the morning and to look like a bloody masquerade at midnight. The difference between movies and haunted attractions is that for a movie they can have all the lights on in the room and family and friends around to watch it together. For attractions there, is no choice whether the lights are on or whether or not friends the person went with getting separated from them. Now, yes these people might seem crazy for wanting to jump out of their skin but it's not just the scare they look for. They love the feeling of the build up when they are walking through not knowing what could be lurking around the corner, and then they also love the feeling they get after they have been frightened. To the people who don't like getting scared they don't understand how someone could put themselves in those type of situations on purpose.
Not only is it about the scare but it's about what's happening inside that person's body when something or someone jumps at them. In an article written by Daniel Bennett from BBC focus magazine called ¨The Science Of Fear ¨he explains that there is a part of the brain called the amygdala it is located at the bottom part and it can get set off. When the amygdala is set off it can cause higher blood pressure, a higher and faster heartbeat, and can also make a person sweaty. In another article, written by Allegra Ringo called ¨Why Do Some Brains Enjoy Fear? ¨ She talks about how there is a hormone released called dopamine which also goes hand and hand with the adrenalin felt. Some people appreciate and savor the feeling while others disfavor those feelings and reactions of the body. There's no way of controlling this because a person could get scared in various ways. This part of the brain is also attached to the hippocampus. This is where all the memories are, so if something scared the body and brain, it would remember that and the brain would automatically have the same reaction and fear it did the first time it saw it.
When looking at a video of Jimmy Fallon and Kevin Hart go into a haunted house in New York it was a great example. The very first room that they were walking through was dimmed and the color of the lights were red, the scene that was set up was a rainy forest. As soon as they got into the room the door shut very loud behind them , they continued to walk further into the room and something sprayed in them and when it sprayed it also made a noise as soon as this happened Jimmy screamed and Kevin said “C’mon Jimmy you're makin it worse!”. This continued with them jumping out of their skin and screaming, the better the actors hid themselves from Jimmy and Kevin the more scared they became. From the beginning, they knew that they were going into an environment that was going to scare them but they were never really ready for being scared because they didn't know where the people were coming from or when certain sounds were going to happen.
This is always a choice that comes up in life. There is a choice to watch a scary movie, there is a choice to go to a haunted attraction and then there is a choice to not do any of these things because staying in a safe zone will make that human being feel comfortable. But, if people who avoid being scared stopped to think about it, they would realize that going through haunted houses are not just about the vulnerable fear, but it is also about the physical aspects that happen inside of the brain and to a human being’s body as well.

Q4 Artists Statement

Posted by Alexandrea Rivera on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 1:11 pm
The first piece that we did for Quarter 4 was Color Adv. Photo. This took 2 hours to do which means that it took 2 class periods. When doing this I played around with the different filters and contrasts to bring out certain aspects out in the photo that you couldn't original see before.

The second piece that we did for Quarter 4 was a figure drawing. For the figure drawing, we looked at different photos of men and women and then once we found one that was very interesting to us and that would turn out really awesome when we drew them then we could start on it. This took 4 hours which means that it took 4 classes.  When drawing this I learned a lot about the placement of the certain body parts and how to draw them correctly.

The third piece that we did for Quarter 4 was a line drawing. When doing this part I learned a lot on how just simple lines can be so much detail into your artwork. This took 2 class periods which means it took 2 hours.

The fourth piece that we did for Quarter 4 was Digital Drawings. Doing this was extremely fun. We had to take a bunch of shapes and fill the space so that there was a shape covering every part of the picture. When doing this it kind of looks like the pictures I made were illusions. This took 2 class periods which means it took 2 hours.

The fifth piece that we did for Quarter 4 was Space Illusion. When I was drawing the pictures it was a little hard because you have to make sure that everything is the right amount of space apart and that if you have any curves in your drawings that they are going in the right direction. This took 2 class periods which means that this took 2 hours to finish and complete.

The last piece that we did for Quarter 4 was Elements Of Art. For this piece, we had to include color, texture, shapes, lines etc. We basically had to make a picture that incorporated all of the techniques into one single picture of our own. This took 2 class periods which means that it took 2 hours to finish and finalize.

Q3 Artists Statement

The first piece that we did for Quarter 3 was a bike drawing. There was a bike in the room that we had to look at for making our drawing realistic. This drawing was a learning experience on how to draw things to the T and making sure that everything is proportional. This took 4 class periods 2 and a half hours to draw and outline and an hour and a half to color the bike.

The second piece that we did for Quarter 3 was Optical Illusions. For this assignment, we had to use the shading and measurements to almost trick the eyes. This was really cool to learn so you can make it look like the object is actually on the paper. This took 2 classes and 2 hours to do. One hour to draw the shapes and measure them out. And the other hour was to shape them and make them have dimension.

The third piece that we did for Quarter 3 was shading forms. We had to draw 3 shapes on a page. This was teaching us how to use just our pencils. The shading makes such a difference, whether if you’re pressing down hard or barely touching the paper with the pencil. This took 2 class periods to do. I class to draw the big square and the other class period to draw the three other shapes.

The fourth piece that we did for Quarter 3 was an eye drawing. This was more on the realistic side and this was very good for us if we ever wanted to enhance facial features. This took 2 class periods. 1 hour to draw the outline and the other hour to add details like the lighting inside of the eye and the tiny little hairs in the eyebrow.

The last piece for Quarter 3 was a Mandala. This was a freestyle and creative art piece. This was teaching us to fill up the page add designs everywhere so there is a lot to look at and most importantly to make sure your color stands out.

All of these drawings taught me something different but with this, I can combine all of these strategies and techniques to create something awesome.

E2 U4 Para Mi Barrio- Sur Filadelfia

Posted by Alexandrea Rivera in Spanish 2 · Manuel · B Band on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 8:59 am

The first piece that we did for Quarter 2 was Blind Contour Drawings. This is where we picked an object or person to draw on a piece of paper but we weren't allowed to look at the paper when doing it or pick up the pencil. I feel like even though there were lines all throughout every drawing because we couldn't pick our pencils up off the paper they came out as abstract art and it wasn't us being perfectionists like we usually are. This assignment took 2 class periods for me the first hour was to draw and then the second class period was to color them in and submit them.

The second piece that we did for Quarter 2 was Choose Your Painting. For this, it was a free draw and learning how to work with different types of paints such as watercolor, oil pastels and acrylics.I did mostly face paintings because I love drawing eyebrows and the last piece of mine were roses because they are my go to drawing. This took 4 class periods first class period and half of the second class to trace back over the drawings with a permanent marker. The last two class periods were painting and perfecting.

The third piece that we did for Quarter 2 was Recreation Of A Piece Of Art. You could pick any artists and try and draw their drawings in their styles. I chose Toystory because I think the characters in the movies are so cute and are really fun to draw. I'm beyond happy with how all of my pieces turned out they look exactly like them! These assignments all took 4 class periods to draw. The first and half of the second I drew and traced back over with black color pencil to give them black outlines. The last two periods I colored them in and added extra effects to make them stand out more.

The fourth Piece that we did for Quarter 2 was Illustration Of A Piece Of Writing. You could pick a song, book, poem, or even a line from a script and use those words written to create your version of what they mean to you in a picture. I chose 3 Songs Love is blind, Me, Myself and I and I'm every woman. I chose Love is blind because it was just a song I was listening to while drawing. I chose Me, Myself and I because it's a song I never get tired of and G-Eazy the artist of the song is one of my favorite people to listen to. Lastly, I chose I'm every woman by Whitney Houston because a couple weeks before doing this assignment my mom-mom passed away and Whitney was her favorite singer, I wanted to draw something that would mean a lot to her. This took 2 class periods. The first period to draw and color and the second to submit and erase any pencil marks.

The Last piece that we did for Quarter 2 was Photo Editing. For Photo editing, we were recommended this app called Snapseed and this is where you can change different aspects of the picture to make it look way different than it did before. All of the photos I chose each meant something to me. This took 4 class periods to do. 3 classes, I worked on editing the photos and making more until the class ended. The last class was uploading them and putting them onto a document to upload the assignment.

When looking back at all of my work for just this quarter I have grown as an artist and I have developed a more structured style for myself it's not final and it will never be final I will continue to grow and learn more techniques and abstract thinking ways to do my art for others to view in different ways. I'm excited to see what I can come up with in Quarter 3.

MP1 Art Work

The first art assignment that we did were the ceiling tiles. For my ceiling tile I chose to do a nun from the show American Horror Story. I chose to do this because this is my favorite character on my favorite show. I am very proud of how it turned out, It took about 4 class periods to do and 1 class period to perfect and touch up on the red background and freshen up the white paint for the nun.

The second assignment that we did was a self portrait. I chose a photo of me a couple weeks before where I got dressed up to go to a wedding. I chose this photo because it is a very good memory that I want to remember. When I first heard about this assignment I got a lit anxious because when artist draw themselves it's a bad habit that they have to want to change physical features they have to make themselves look more how they would like to look in real life. For this drawing I stuck to the photo I traced the image and got to work. I stayed in a mindset as if someone else was drawing me. Im very surprised on how this turned out and I think this is one of my best pieces that I have ever drawn.

  2. The life of a teenager online.
  3. What is the most memorable thing to you about this show?
  4. Everything in the show because there are things you can relate to.
  5. Why/Why not -  is it important to watch shows like these?
  6. They can change or perspective in a good way or bad way.
  7. How will you keep your future family safe online?
  8. Setting rules for my children and making sure they are doing what they are suppose to be doing on the computer.
  9. Why is it important to talk with your family about internet safety
  10. They can end up helping you with any problems you have or don't understand.
  11. What advice would you give to parents that don't know how to keep their children safe online?
  12. I would tell them to watch the show and the can get ideas from what the see and hear.

Media Fluency Rivera #2

Posted by Alexandrea Rivera on Friday, December 18, 2015 at 6:52 pm

Reflection:

I learned that not everyone is going to have the same view as you and not everyone has the same preferences but that's okay because not everyone is the same. I also learned that I should take the things people are saying in a positive way not a negative way, I say this because you can learn from mistakes or you can get advance for the present or the future.

I switched the picture of me because there was a white border on the previous picture and it was out of place and drawing attention away from the rest of the slide. I also added a picture to cover more of the slide, and lastly I also rearranged the words and their placement.

                                                        "Who Am I Online"

The video that we watched in class was "Who Am I Online" . The activity in class was to search yourself on the internet and see what comes up. The video made me think of social media and the bullying on there.

I appear happy and silly, I feel some people perceive me as the same way as I do and some others may think negative things about me it all depends on the person that you are.

The goal of internet trolls are to put people down. Trolls on the internet usually have been put down by others so that leads them to do that to others to make themselves feel good and better. Other times these people just enjoy people hurting themselves or feeling upset.

The negative result of online anonymity is you sometimes cant tell who is bullying you. The positive result of online anonymity is that if you're sticking up for someone without being a bullying yourself the bully or troll doesn't know who you are so they cant bully you on a personal level.

The coax cable comes in through the coax splitter , and then the coax wire goes through the modem going into the router. Another coax wire that is running through the coax splitter goes into the living room into the cable box and then the TV. The second coax wire goes through my parents room through the cable box and into the TV. Lastly my room , the last coax wire goes through the cable box and into the TV.
