Senior Art Q3 Portfolio

Posted by Brandon Jones in Senior Art · Hull · B Band on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 8:35 pm

This Quarter we were exposed to different techniques that were taught to us by our student assistant teacher Mr.Herrera. What made this quarter different however was that despite learning about different techniques, we were given a lot of freedom to create what we wanted.
When creating the Indian Ink Painting, I took a good amount of inspiration from artist Jake Wyatt's drawing of Marvel's superhero Black Bolt as I am a fan of both Mr.Wyatt's work and the character Black Bolt. I decided to go for a washed out and darker coloring with the ink because I've never done anything like that before and I wanted a challenge
For the printmaking, since I haven't done anything like that before, I decided to experiment with different colors and images. I decided to use pink and black for my prints as well as an original image and the sun from Adult Swim's Rick and Morty.
Finally for my sculpture, I wanted to talk about how oil companies use cotton to clean up oil spills so I decided to make a sword out of cotton, hangers and paper mache to show how oil companies are finding different ways to fight pollution. I enjoyed creating the sculpture the most.

Senior Art Q3

Posted by Pedro Castillo in Senior Art · Hull · B Band on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 2:09 pm

This quarter in art was far different from every other quarter. We had a new teacher in the class and learned about new types of art and experimented with each. We started off with painting using India ink which is used in traditional Asian paintings. We conducted personal studies or practice sketches before we created our final piece. My final piece was inspired by an OFF-WHITE t-shirt designed by Othelo Gervacio and Virgil Abloh. It signifies the struggle of the native people of America and their history. Next was printmaking and again, we created studies before creating our final prints. My final prints were of a Final Fantasy inspired character and the Grim Reaper. Printmaking was extremely difficult due to the fact that we had to make sure each print was in the same place on every paper. The final assignment was a sculpture with a twist. We could only use materials that we find or scavenge. This was the most difficult for me because I did not have access to certain supplies that I needed to put my original piece together, therefore I had to change my idea. My current idea represents technology that teaches kids. Today in age, we live in a world where technology is distracting kids from learning, and while observing how kids interact with technology, I thought it would be a great idea to make technology that pulls their focus back on learning.

Quarter 3 Artwork

Posted by Isabel Medlock in Senior Art · Hull · B Band on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 1:45 pm

This quarter I had the opportunity to try a couple different mediums. I enjoyed experimenting with new forms of art and I am pretty satisfied with my final products. This quarter, for the last project especially, I started to further think about the meaning behind my choices while doing art and the importance of putting a lot of thought into every aspect.

I used india ink for the first time for the first assignment of the quarter. I enjoyed the initial experimenting and doing the studies. I didn’t enjoy doing such a large painting entirely with ink; I wasn’t able to control the ink very well. My final product feels unbalanced and I wish I spent more time adding details, especially to the left side of the painting. I like the way the tree turned out, especially the detailing on the trunk.

This wasn’t the first time I’ve done printmaking but I did learn a few new things about the medium this quarter. Similarly to the first project, I enjoyed the process of experimenting, especially with mixing colors. I am proud of the designs I made for my prints. I wish I experimented more with the colors. My prints weren’t very even; I had trouble spreading the ink evenly. I enjoyed the process of printing my designs even though I am not entirely satisfied with the final product.

My favorite project of the quarter was the sculpture. My sculpture is centered around the issue of testing cosmetics on animals. I wanted to show the harm that is being done for the sake of beauty so the main element of my project is a bunny covered in pictures cut from makeup ads. The bunny is chained to makeup and is muzzled by a miniature liberty bell. I enjoyed the process of putting the sculpture together and am happy with the final product.

Chloë Epstein Q3 Art Portfolio

I think this has been my favorite quarter so far because we've gotten to experiment with different techniques and art forms. Right from the beginning Mr. Herrera asked us what type of artwork we wanted to do so I felt like we had a lot of creative freedom. I have done both printmaking and sculpture before, but I had never painted a whole piece in paint before so I felt like I learned a lot from that experience. I also got to practice in both ink painting and printmaking because I either had to make multiple copies or had to do a few practice pictures before hand. My favorite piece was my sculpture because I think it turned out really good and creepy looking. I was proud of this piece the most because I had to make it out of what I could find and couldn't buy anything. I also liked that this piece had to have an actual meaning that was political because we hadn't done anything like that before.

Brandon Jones Q2 Art Portfolio

Artist’s Statement: In Q2,  the main focus was on various colored pencil techniques. In particularly, we completed various blind contour drawings, pieces of fruit and a color wheel that helped us practice and hone the skills we learned using colored pencil. The blind contour assignments showed me how not to rely on the paper for reference when drawing something but rather to focus on the actual image I am drawing. These assignments taught me how to blend colors as well as what colors mix well together. One assignment that stood out to me the most was the fruit basket because I saw myself using the techniques I learned and then applying them to create colorful and realistic pieces of fruit. I hope I will be able to use these skills that I’ve learned from this quarter and apply them into the next.

Pedro Castillo: Senior Art Q2

Posted by Pedro Castillo in Senior Art · Hull · B Band on Friday, February 3, 2017 at 5:34 pm

Quarter 2 Senior Art was by far the longest art quarter that I have ever experienced and there was a wide variety of projects that were completed over the, roughly, 13 week period. Most of the projects this quarter were color pencil based and all involved some sort of coloring with a colored pencil. All except for the first project.

The first Senior Art project for quarter 2 was a blind contour project. We were tasked with creating, not 5, not 10, but 15 contour line drawings all which had to be completely different. Being a student at SLA, you never run out of subjects to draw but the challenge was picking what you were going to draw. After the contour drawings, we were to practice our colored pencil techniques by drawing spheres and practicing our shading using color. This was much more difficult because it was my first time trying to bring a drawing to life with actual color. We also needed to do a quick sphere shaped drawing of our own and I decided to do a colored skull which was extremely difficult to color since all the different shapes that make up a skull… shading was far from easy.

Next, we created our very own color wheels using nothing but the primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. The difficult part of this project was mixing the colors to make all the tertiary colors in between the primary colors. This really helped me understand how colors work though. The project after this was a colored portrait. I chose to draw a picture of my cousin. After the portrait, we were tasked with drawing and coloring four different fruits and this was by far the most difficult project for me. Not only am I very new to using colors but having to make these colorful fruits look lifelike made things 100x harder. I chose to draw a mango, pear, blueberries, and an apple. Later came more contour line drawing but these required colors. My favorite of these was the drawing of a friend of mine who is building a personality on YouTube and is doing very well. His name is Pingy, or Jonny He (youtube channel) and he is in the drawing of the male with the blue and yellow t-shirt on. Finally was a free drawing. We were allowed to draw whatever we liked but we had to color it as well. I chose to draw a fictional character named Sasuke from the anime, Naruto Shippuden.

This quarter I learned much about colors but I also learned that I need much more practice in order to create colored drawings that I will be comfortable with. I plan on coloring all of the drawings that I do on my free time from now on just to get as much practice as I can.

Q2- Artist's Statement and Slideshow

Posted by Chloë Epstein in Senior Art · Hull · B Band on Monday, January 30, 2017 at 10:35 pm

Artist's Statement

This quarter we focused on different art techniques and practicing them instead of completing just big projects like we did a lot last quarter. The assignments were more about learning new skills and repetition than just creating something. I think I learned a lot this quarter because our assignments had us practicing new skills from the sources you gave us. We completed blind contour drawings, a color wheel, and practiced shading with different objects including fruit. None of them were finished pieces, or my best work, but I learned a lot from completing them. One of my favorite assignments though, was the colored pencil portrait we were assigned. I ended up drawing Pedro and the drawing looked just like him, while also having it’s own style. I usually work with pencil, charcoal, or ink when doing a portrait, os I gained a lot from working with a medium I was unfamiliar with. I do hope next quarter we will be able to do both big projects and small assignments while also learning in different mediums of art.

Quarter Two Art

Posted by Isabel Medlock in Senior Art · Hull · B Band on Monday, January 30, 2017 at 10:27 am

Throughout this quarter we have all been working with colored pencils and as a result I have improved my technique and come to enjoy the medium. We started with blind contour drawings which I found pretty difficult. It was probably my least favorite assignment of the quarter but I also realize that it was an important assignment. I wish I had practiced blind contour drawing a little more; my drawings aren’t very good. However, the process was useful and made me more aware when drawing a subject. The next assignment, colored pencil techniques, taught me three new techniques. I enjoyed this assignment very much and I am proud of the finished product. This assignment taught me how to add perspective and color gradation using color pencils. The last assignment that builded on technique was the color wheel assignment. This involved using three colored pencils to create a color wheel. This assignment taught me how to blend colored pencils and better create gradation in color. The circle itself is a little lopsided and some of the colors aren’t blended as well as I hoped but overall I am proud of my work.

Once we learned basic techniques we worked on a colored pencil portrait. I had trouble with layering colored pencils to create realistic and complex skin. I tried different combinations but most of the time the subject just looked sickly. I wish I had worked more on this and used more layers to build up the skin. My favorite assignment of the quarter was the colored pencil fruit basket. I chose to draw an apple, peach, cantaloupe slice, and pear sitting on a table. I spent a lot of time layering colors and creating smooth gradients. I also worked hard on the shadows and highlights and tried to make the fruit look as realistic and three dimensional as I could. I am very proud of the final product and I especially love the color gradient in the pear. Through this assignment I learned how much I enjoyed blending colored pencils.

The next assignment, colorizing blind contour drawings, I also enjoyed. I drew two faces which are the ones I am most proud of and a couple other objects. I enjoyed using a variety of bright colors and blending them together to make the drawings very vivid and colorful. The last assignment was a four hour choice drawing. I drew a cat which I colored in with bright patches of color. The cat is thinking of the things it wants which include toys and food. I enjoyed creating a blue and purple gradient for the thought bubbles. Overall, this quarter I came to really love using colored pencils and created a few pieces that I am proud of.

Brandon Jones Art Portfolio Q1

Posted by Brandon Jones in Senior Art · Hull · B Band on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 11:06 pm

For Q1 I drew I created a ceiling tile, fall wall hanging and a charcoal self portrait. For the first project, we were assigned the ceiling tile. I chose to do a comic book cover from DC Rebirth, the newest reboot of comics for DC comics. I was unsure how to go about it first. I decided to use only grey and black for the characters. The second project was a fall wall hanging. I decided to do a Jason Vorhees mask, as I felt it was appropriate for the season as Halloween was approaching. For the third project we had to create a self portrait using charcoal. I felt as though this project would take a lot of time and attention to detail. I enjoyed this one the most out of all the other projects we did. Unfortunately I was unable to create the water color painting due to the SEPTA strike and my inability to come to school. Finally, I enjoyed this quarter. I learned many helpful techniques and I look forward to future projects.

Senior Art Q1

Posted by Pedro Castillo in Senior Art · Hull · B Band on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 9:37 pm

This year in art, we began the year with a pretty big project. We started off with the year with a ceiling tile painting. I decided to do a grim reaper ceiling tile. Based off of Yeezus Tour art, the ceiling tile is a Wes Lang inspired reaper on a military green background. His scythe has a rose at the end to symbolize love over violence. The second project was a fall wall hanging, we were to create a fall themes drawing and I chose to do a skull (for Halloween) with fall leaves in the background. The third was a self portrait with charcoal. This was the hardest project of the year for me because I'm not that great with realistic drawings and I don't know how to draw with charcoal. In the end, I took my time and I enjoyed the final product. The final project of the year was a watercolor painting and this was a good way to end off the quarter. Personally, painting with watercolors is always a relaxing experience for me so after balancing the college process, social life, and school, I was able to relax a bit.
