Global Fiction Infographic

Posted by Sarybel Melendez in Globalization - Block - D on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 7:51 pm

My infographic talks about Rafael Trujillo and his dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. I read the book ''Feast of the goat'', which was about him and his family. I decided to do my infographic on this topic because I feel like a lot of people don't know who he was and what he did to the Dominican Republic.

I read the book Behind The Beautiful Forevers. I wanted to address the question of 'Why should we learn about situations and other people in the world?' I think this is good topic to discuss because it's very important for us to be informed about what's going in other countries besides the US. We as a country have a lot of issues, but global issues have an effect on us and it's good to know what other people go through everyday.

How Does One Find Peace?

Posted by Jamekea Lee in Globalization - Block - D on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 2:57 pm

In Globalization class, I read the book In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner. The book is about an 8 year-old girl Raami  who's family taken into custody by the Khmer Rouge during the Cambodian genocide. Raami and her family faced many hardships and obstacles that seem like they were impossible to overcome, however she managed to find peace through it all and move on with life. I chose to create an info-graphic about peace because it is a necessity of life and necessary for true happiness.

In Globalization class, I read a book called The Feast of the Goat, written by Mario Vargas Llosa. It was about the violent and manipulative dictator Trujillo. This book really takes you into the lives of the people closest to the famous Dominican dictator, and gives you a look at what happened under the surface of things. For my info graphic I looked into what it is about dictators that changes people and their daily lives, and how they react to drastic change in a system. I watched two films for this project, One called Bringing Down The Dictator, and the other a documentary of CIA clips of Trujillo.

My infographic is based on the book, Behind the Beautiful forevers. The book focused on living in the slums from several view points and it gave you a different outlook then what most people think. It focuses on two different families that don't really associate with each other, but from both you learn a lot.

Global Fiction - Final Product "Westernization and Class Division in India"

Posted by Dejah Harley in Globalization - Block - D on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 9:40 pm

In Globalization I read the book Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo. It looked into the life of residents in an Indian slum. This book really speaks on the level of corruption within that country. After reading that book I watched the film Satyagraha. I wanted to look deeper into the amount of corruption in India and how it is depicted in regular Bollywood films. Within the film you get to see how corrupt the government truly is in India but also the huge division between social classes. One of the main characters was constantly chasing this “western” dream of constant money and luxury.  Below is an info-graphic that I created on westernization and what it has done to the division of classes in India.
