"Let's Picture It"

Posted by Kennedy Fields in English 1 · Giknis · E Band on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 9:05 am

Hello, to my faithful blog readers. Also, If you aren’t one of my faithful blog readers go check out post number one and two. I’m back again. My first blog post informed readers how ballet is known to be dominantly white sport. I also stress how the black community of dancers is slowly growing but still fails in being showcased in big productions. In blog post two I got to interview my friend, Sabree Primus. In this interview I asked her opinion on the dance world and the black dance community. She also gave suggestions on how to fix problems in this community.

After doing long research on my topics, I had to do something to make a change. I wanted to know what I could do to make a difference in a topic I resonate with. As you know, I interviewed a friend not too long ago. To close this interview I asked what she believed was a good idea to help do anything about keeping the dance world diverse. Sabree thought a good approach would be to have more integrated dance school, dance products that come in color, and more people spreading the word. I would would also love to see these changes, but there’s only so much you can do (especially when it’s a school project and you have deadlines).

As an agent of change in this topic, my goal is to create a hashtag for social media. I gathered members from my dance team, to take professional dance pictures around the city, to spread the word. I did this because I was inspired by a page I found not that long ago on Instagram. The page is called, brown girls do ballet, and they have hashtags and all. It is a page where they repost many aspiring colored ballerinas and dancers in general. This page is very well known. Many dance studios follow this page to support what they stand for. This organization stands for everything I believe, being a dancer. They also have there own website with propaganda.

This is one of the individual photos of me during the photoshoot. This is also a picture that is similar to pictures the page posts, that's why I chose to send this in. I also chose this one because it was a ballet photo.

My goal in doing this photoshoot was to send it to the page on instagram so they’d post my picture as apart of raising awareness. I also asked the participants in the photoshoot to do the same with their individual pics and post them. The page hasn’t gotten back to us yet, but I have no dont they wont.

THANKS FOR READING! Check out my citations!

We Picked Up So Much Litter!

Posted by Andrew Cheatley in English 1 · Giknis · E Band on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 2:41 pm

With my first blog post I talked about how the world will look like Earth from the Disney movie, WALL-E. The reason I related the future of Earth to WALL-E’s world is because in WALL-E the world is a trash planet covered in trash. There is buildings made of trash, now our Earth right now doesn’t have buildings of trash, but we do have large heaps and streets filled with trash. So how will it be in the future? Look at my old Blog Post here. In my second blog post I talked about my own research and my results. Such as my graphs histograms, and pie charts. Also how I don’t want people to just pick up litter and make the world beautiful, also I want people who don’t know the full extent of littering and it's effects, to learn that. If you want to see my second blog post go here.

There is many companies in the, making the world beautiful business. Cleaning up litter, recycling, etc. Most of these companies have huge amounts of their own research and can’t stand to see humans destroy the planet. They created organizations and began do actually do something about the problems created by humans. I love the earth and it birthed us, the least we can do is clean up our messes right? People who do clean up the world can be seen here. While I don’t have the funds or the people to clean up the world as much as these groups do, I still try and do my fair share, and with this project I was able to. My agent of change was to brings trash bags with me and walk around the school, people who knew that I had the bags would ask for one then would pick up a bunch of litter on their way home. I gave out 16 trashbags. Here are some of the images I got from the people.

This project was my first ever project where I really handled my time and got my hands dirty as well. I had 2 trash bags filled. I worked very hard on this project. I am honestly very happy Ms. Giknis gave a project like this, one where it actually matters to me. I’m sure every single student has felt like most of the projects they get are stupid, pointless etc. This was the only project where we were able to work and try to fix an problem that affects the student and the people around them. I am proud of all the work I produced. Some of the groups that I researched had lots and lots of work and really spoke to me directly, one of them you can see here. This website talks about the Anti-Litter Campaign. The ALC cleans litter in a completely different way than we are used to. Such as this one. In London, a clever team of designers and environmentalists are "tricking" people into changing their litter habits. For example, instead of dropping cigarettes butts on the ground, people are invited to vote for their favorite football player by places their rubbish in a voting bin. This is an example of how this campaign works and how they clean the world. They add a very fun twist to cleaning litter which really is appreciative.

#BLACKLIVESMATTER

Posted by Rahmir Powell in English 1 · Giknis · E Band on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 8:53 pm

I’m back again, for the last time. Yeah, the kid who’s doing the Black Lives Matter project for you and the world. Since you love me so much, read my previous blog posts again. And if you haven’t already checked them out, stop reading and go check them out RIGHT NOW- Part 1 and Part 2. In these, I talk about the importance of my topic, why I chose it, and how/what I researched. Now let’s get to the good stuff.

At first it took me a long time to figure out how I wanted to make a slight difference in the community. I reached out to those apart of BLM Philly. This is the only organization like this in Philadelphia, and they set up events to raise awareness. We spoke about creating some sort of program for children like me who want to make a difference, but the process was difficult so I decided to make a smaller, yet more significant impact. I spoke to all of the Freshmen of SLA, and attempted to get everyone to wear Black/Dark hoodies or sweaters in remembrance for Trayvon Martin, the man that sparked this movement and ultimately led to creating a better place for me and my people. Surprisingly, I got over 50 people to wear black, which touched my heart that I could raise that much aware for something so important to me and others. Many people suggested that I should do something like this in the future. For the future, I’m going to strive to create a Trayvon Martin Day, AKA #TrayDay. I am aware that this poses a lot of obstacles and challenges, but I’m prepared to gather other people who same the same passion for ‘Blackness’.

As an African American Male in the United States, I felt like it was required for me to take on this topic. Not only to raise much needed awareness, but to prove to myself that anybody can make a difference in the world and in someone’s heart. Going through this process made me a much better person and I realized that I can do the right thing if I simply put myself out there. There was a point during this process where I felt like I was not doing well enough, and there were people that supported me and my topic and I’m grateful for that. What I’m trying to say is, I loved doing this project because it brought me closer to my inner self and I got to expose many future opportunities for myself. If I had to do this project again, I would do it a hundred times over although it was stressful.

I want to thank my wonderful teacher for helping me and my classmates make a change and raise awareness. I want to thank my readers for coming along for the ride and I hope I inspired some young souls to conquer what they love. Lastly I want to honors those who lost their lives in the history of the Movement by saying, #BLACKLIVESMATTER!

The End of my Experiences with Affordable Healthcare.

Posted by Shaheed Williams in English 1 · Giknis · E Band on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 6:23 pm

The context of the last post discussed what The Affordable Act and Obamacare was. The battle for affordable health care is being fought through Obamacare. Obamacare is threatened of being annulled by President Donald Trump. Even despite the fact that Obamacare opens opportunities to underprivileged families and middle-class families, Trump still wants to take it away. The Affordable Healthcare Act is equivalent to Obamacare. The Affordable Healthcare Act is called an act because it was an effort to strengthen the Healthcare market and making insurance available to more people (First Blog Post).

The content of the second blog post consisted of new information found by the interview I had done with nurse Jelysa. I picked up new facts on Obamacare and the goals of the Affordable Healthcare act. Some facts like the act’s three primary goals are to make affordable health insurance available to more people. The law/act provides consumers with subsidies (“tax credits”) that reduces costs for households with incomes between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level. Expand the Medicaid program to cover all adults with income below 138% of the federal poverty level. Support medical care delivery methods designed to lower the costs of health care generally (Second blog post).

I enjoyed my experience with my Agent of Change. For my Agent of Change I did volunteer work at my mother’s clinic, the Abbotsford Family Practice (Abbotsford Falls Clinic). My mom works there as a nurse and she got me connected with another nurse. Nurse Jelysa took me under her wing. She was the one I interviewed about Obamacare and affordable healthcare. She gave me facts about the healthcare topic. After that, we scheduled a work appointment for me where I would be able to shadow her. Not only did I shadow, I also assisted Jelysa with interviewing patients. Jelysa’s main role at the clinic was to interview patients to see if they were eligible for Obamacare. I assisted her by interviewing patients myself which was my Agent of Change.

Knowing that I actually did nurse work feels great. The job I wish to obtain in the future is to become a doctor, so helping out at a clinic was a cool experience. It felt like I was actually making a change in people’s lives. Being able to prescribe patients Obamacare felt good because I was giving them and their family a chance to make their lives easier. Knowing this makes me angry at the fact that president Trump wants to terminate Obamacare. This whole project made me feel important because of the changes I was making. I learned that life isn’t easy when your basic needs to survive in a modern society, is stripped away. Healthcare should be free for all because everyone should have the right to achieve a higher state of well being.

If I could change one thing, it would be my interview. I like my interview but I wish I could have interviewed more people. However, I really had fun with this project and this was one of the best projects I’ve ever done.
