Mackenzie Hopkins Capstone

For my Capstone I created a garden in my backyard. I was inspired to grow my own produce to have a healthier diet and to know where exactly my food is coming from, and how it's grown. Orginally I wanted to grow a rooftop garden at SLA and educate my peers on growing their own foods, but because of Covid-19 restrictions, I taught my little brother. After researching and gathering materials my Capstone took eight weeks to complete, and the final product were my plants growing successfully in the garden. This project taught me helpful life skills that may benefit me in the future, and to always have patience and never given up.

Zeniah's Capstone

Hey all! I’m Zeniah and for my capstone I founded a non-profit called Women4Women. I was motivated to prevent women incarceration by tackling issues in our neighborhoods that brought down young women. Originally, I had an event planned. However, I’ve been able to help women in different ways during C0-VID 19. I am still motivated to cultivating self worth and women empowerment especially during these hard times where one is found questioning one’s worth. Love yourself always!

For the final event for my capstone I wanted to hold a skin care workshop but due to obvious reason I cannot. The goal of my capstone was to reform the way we look at skincare and make people feel more confident in their natural skin. My inquiry question was “How do the products people put on their skin impact them?” I created all natural body butters, using raw unprocessed ingredients. I made a lot with essential oils with different benefits, like lemon, bergamot, peppermint, jasmine and Lavender. I sold the body butters to different people and had them send me reviews. Some reviews I wrote down for feedback and others were put in the video. The video depicts me talking about my process, a tutorial and reviews.

In your teenage years, you are trying to find yourself, your identity, and where you belong. As a teenager now, I know the struggle of feeling you have to adjust yourself to fit into someone else standards especially as a girl. These young years play a crucial role in a young woman’s life. During these years she is working on her confidence and finding her sense of style. For my capstone, I want to provide a personalized hair unit for teens with hair loss. The cost of personalized hair units made by different professionals and factories are painfully high-priced Not many can afford such expensive luxuries especially lower-income families. Being able to provide these wigs to young women I wondered how this will improve their confidence and show them they can be who they are.

For the final product of my capstone, I created a documentary showcasing the education that the students in my home village, Boudjima, are receiving. This video documentary will be presented publically to create awareness and inform people to grip the understanding of the experiences of education other students in the world are experiencing. In addition to this capstone, I held fundraisers and created online fundraisers to raise money to be able to aid a school in my village to be able to give deserving students a better educational experience. This project is significant to me because I was once one of those students experiencing this type of schooling in my village, I now want to be able to give back and help my prior classmates, friends, and family. https://youtu.be/riZCTHZ9ggU

Niya Petty Capstone

For my capstone, I wanted to support the young women that I attended SLA with, by empowerment. By empowering the youth, it will help with self-determination to motivate oneself. By forming a small organization where girls close in age are brought together every day, they have an opportunity to develop social skills and prepare themselves for the future. Having this kind of community will help them set goals, learn what it means to be empowered, and give them the confidence to persevere. I have created a blog post where girls are welcomed to speak out or be given advice.

For my capstone I created a professional development series called: Black Boys & Young Men: Liberated, Empowered, Educate. This was done in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia’s office of Students Rights and Responsibilities. This professional development is designed to create an environment where educators are able to have meaningful conversation about how race can affect classroom learning environments as well as talking about a Black student’s individuality and how the challenges they face also affects how they learn. This series serves as a training to help educators (new and experienced) across all fields understand the reality of Black students in their classroom. For this series I had a larger focus on Black boys.

For my capstone I started uploading videos on my youtube channel again. I downloaded Adobe Premiere Pro at the beginning of May and started to learn how to use it to make better, more professional videos. Learning how to use the program from scratch has definitely been the most difficult/rewarding part of the whole process. In every video I make theres something I don't know how to do that I have to go and learn so every video requires a learning process. What has made this process rewarding is finding something that I am actually passionate enough about to put the required capstone hours into. This youtube channel has really showed me what I can do when I put my mind to something and apply myself fully

For my capstone I decided to start a petition to the School District of Philadelphia for using the term "Berber" to label the language of Amzighen people. The term “Berber” is offensive. It was a label given by the oppressors (list colonizers) of the Amzighen people. The word “Berber” (derived from Greek word for barbarian) refers to the Berberian people. Amazigh means “free people'' in the Indigenous Tamazight language, it's an important cultural distinction. Language screeners are a first step in enrollment in the School District. This change will stop Amzighen students who attend Philadelphia public schools from encountering an offensive term during their first days in the district. Changing this offensive label will also send a message to the Philadelphia Language Community that the School District of Philadelphia stands with indigenous peoples and supports the local Amzighen community. I worked through the Research phase, gathering information from all different types of websites with different languages. My father’s side of the family which is 100% Amazigh finds it offensive. I ask that you sign this petition asking the School District of Philadelphia to change the label for the language from “Berber” to Tamazight. http://chng.it/2StdjwsnkH

Kishara Erwin¨s Capstone

For my capstone I decided to create a mini documentary of my life. The purpose of this was to tell the world my story. I wanted people to know that even if you look different because you have a disability, you should still love yourself and be proud of who you are. Having a disability does not mean you are not special or should think little of yourself. if anything your disability makes you stand out and unique. In the documentary I tell my story in the hope of inspiring others and myself. Throughout my life it took a long time of gaining confidence in myself to reach this point of speaking my truth. When you are younger you just wish for the whispers, stares, and laughter to stop everytime you come outside. Or in my case to not always want to hide behind my mom or sister so people would not laugh at me. Telling your story helps people understand you dont think you are different than anyone else. It also shows you love yourself for who you are. My capstone taught me my voice can be a powerful weapon and that i need to use it. Ultimately I hope people be proud of who they are despite of anything they encounter in life. Disability or no disability everyone is beautiful in their own way. We can never let what others think of us stop or block our path of being the greatest version of ourselves we can be.
