Throughout the year my capstone way to learn what it takes to be a physical trainer. I gave people lesions on the proper form and the techniques in football skills, boxing skills and your regular weight training. Through this all not only did I also learn more about personal training and the skills of the sports that I decided to teach. But I learned what I needed on a more personal level and how everyone will need to be trained in different ways. The most important part of training another person is the progression of him or her and I learned how to get that out of different types of people. Bibliography Bodybuildingcom. "NFL Combine Trainer: 8-Week Program." Bodybuilding.com. January 17, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/nfl-combine-trainer-8-week-program.html This is a website that shows some of the workouts that some of the type players in the NFL use and I want to try some of these with the people I train and want to use some of these myself at the same amount of intensity. With the training I will be able to determine the intensity and modify the activities based on how everyone will keep up. This link will really help out on our field training. It doesn't go over all of the best workouts and training methods that football players use but it does help with some ideas and methods. "Boxing Coaching – My 7 Methods For Teaching A Group." He has his own gym and post videos of how he does things to get bigger. He talks about the different types of things that he takes and what he does for the best results and to become bigger and bigger. I watch his videos and have seen good advice on his channel that I have also used and want to pass on. He has good form and focuses on the smaller things to make sure your results are strong. I like this because it hits two aspects of the type of training that I am going to do. For one it definitely hits on different football related exercises that I can do and teach but also hits on just regular in gym training that I could teach and go through to help what we do on the field. Mrs. Martin, my capstone mentor is also one of my sources. She is also the teacher of the class that I SAT. She lets me lead the class and she helps me where I need help. She also sits back and let me teach the class on my own and lead them through exercises. I get a lot of hands on experience with teaching a large group which is good because I get to learn the different types of learners but also how to accommodate them. In my project I only work one on one or in small groups with people. Now I get experience with a different number of people at different times. Personal Training Looking good Feeling good. This is a book that was recommended to me by my capstone mentor Mrs. Martin. This book gives looks and explanation on helping people reach their goals physical goals. This book also helps you evaluate what type of learner the person you are training will be and how to accommodate them. It helps you become the type of leader that they need so they can do their best and see the results they're looking for in the time that that is most convenient for you and convenient for their schedule. He shows different combinations that you can put the different types of moves in and talks about different scenarios that you might use them in. I have used his videos a lot and found them very effective when trying to learn these moves and incorporate them in fights and training. He does a great job explaining and demonstrating. It wrote out and explained each and every step to getting the certification and taking a test for it. This won't be a huge component of things that I use on the people that I am training but It does still give me ideas to work into my plans for how and what I will teach. Also now in the research part of everything I will at least know the next steps for when I am actually ready to pursue this as a career Waehner, Paige. "How Can I Become a Personal Trainer?" It goes over the pros and cons of being a personal training and other things like that. I have a lot of experience in teaching and training and want to compare what I find on this website to my own methods and ways to teaching people and see how much they differ and are the same. This is a portion that will also help me in the future toward the end of the year when I start my way into making this into a career. Youtube Fight tips https://www.youtube.com/user/FightTipsVideos is a actual fighter that took his talent to youtube. He takes questions and topics from fans and discusses them or answers them. Some of his videos are just him showing different types of fighting moves an explaining them or showing combos and how to put them together in different situations. I have actually used his videos in the past and they were effective for me when incorporating them in fights or training. Regardless of what you go to his channel for at the end at least for me I left with a better understanding of a move, form, (The video file couldn't be submitted on here for some reason, but here are some screenshots of the video)

Meymey Seng Capstone

Posted by Meymey Seng in Capstone · Estey/Menasion · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 8:57 pm

My capstone revolves around the inquiry of how to remove the negative stigma around bugs and other exotic animals. Going hand in hand with that idea, having an understanding of them would bring awareness to the way we treat the world, which ends up actively affecting the animals and us. Then, I realized that it may be due to a lack of exposure from an early age. Personally from a young age, having these fears inflicted upon myself was a roadblock. Only now developing an understanding of these animals, I wish that I would have learned about them earlier. That encourages my goal of reaching out to younger children. Having an interactive game that incorporates fun facts about said animals will hopefully lead it to become a more embracing subject. During the process of creating this game, I tossed many ideas away trying to find a balance between facts and the idea of it being engaging for the kids. Something that I realized is that when a topic is seen as interesting, the likelihood of it being memorized is much higher. This is when the idea of creating a board game for the two kindergarten classes at D. Newlin Fell Elementary School striked me. Researching the topic of the science behind joyful learning, these games will be incorporated into their play area. As the name suggests, doing so will allow them to gain knowledge each time they play the game. Doing this capstone gave me the realization that people are simply afraid of what they are ignorant of.

Annotated Bibliography

“Animals in Educational Settings: Research and Practice.” NeuroImage, Academic Press, 22 May 2015, www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B9780128012925000146. This is an excerpt from the book Animals in Educational Settings: Research and Practice. Something that this informs is what live animals can provide in typical education settings along with special needs education throughout the age group of preschool and eighth grade. Throughout this book, with the exception of not including invasive animal species, the fact that an incorporation of animal interactions gives children a sense of support and can be therapeutic. Being able to have an exposure to this can even lead to having a healthier adult life. This shows that a part of the reason why there is such a fear of exotic animals such as bugs is simply due to the fact that there is a lack of exposure in it, even in the STEM fields.

Barash, David P. “Why Did Humans Evolve to Be so Fascinated with Other Animals? – David P Barash | Aeon Essays.” Aeon, Aeon, 25 Jan. 2019, aeon.co/essays/why-did-humans-evolve-to-be-so-fascinated-with-other-animals. This is a website on animal magnetism through providing an excerpt from David P. Barash’s book Through A Glass Brightly, discussing why humans are so drawn to animals in the first place. Maybe it comes from the desire to see things that we cannot see on a normal basis, animals in other continents for example are not as easily attainable to view unless they are through a screen or if you actually travel there. Something that I noticed is that this website only mentioned the mammals at the zoo, excluding the bugs and even reptiles. It seems that there is a reputation and certain emotions associated with certain animals. A conclusion that was made is that this fascination could have stemmed from humans being dependent on animals, but the question of why it lead us to being captivated by animal-watching made me realize that this question is something that I want to look into during my own research.

“Benefits of Insects.” Mealworm Metamorphosis: Effect of Temperature (Development) | Entomology | Nebraska, entomology.unl.edu/scilit/benefits-insects. This website is based on research from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, from their Science Literacy and Outreach Department. The variety of information provided is all of the different ways that these bugs help us and the world that we live in, whether it is with pollinating or serving as our decomposers. All of this information is useful since it is a large part of my interactive activity, the goal of it enlightening people on the positive benefits that they provide. With things such as even running out of spaces to put our trash and waste, some of these insects help eat dead animals (carrion), therefore freeing up space.

Fritscher, Lisa, and Steven Gans. “How Do People Cope With a Fear of Insects?” Verywell Mind, Dotdash, www.verywellmind.com/what-is-the-fear-of-insects-2671770. This is a website by Lisa Fritscher on entomophobia stems from. Something that she mentioned is the fact that people who do not typically encounter bugs see them often on different forms of entertainment depicted as something that is humorous yet depicts fear. Especially from those who have a lack of interaction of insects in nature, it is a human instinct for survival to question the things that are unfamiliar to them. This is where paranoia then comes in, with being afraid of contamination, being bitten, infestation, just being ways to precaution. A way that this is helpful showing how to counter these fears with true facts that will help ease the audience.

“Honey Bee Colony Losses 2017-2018: Preliminary Results.” Bee Informed Partnership, May 23rd, 2018, beeinformed.org/results/honey-bee-colony-losses-2017-2018-preliminary-results/. This is a website from the organization Bee Informed Partnership with support from the United States Department of Agriculture and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. It provides the statistics on the decline of honey bees in the United States, studying their health by looking at the growth of different colonies. Something that this proves is the danger there is when it comes to the decline in these colonies since we need them in order to get the food that we eat, they are our biggest pollinators. With the bad reputation of wasps that people mistaken with honeybees, some initial reactions are the kill the insect. Although, by continuing to provide information to people on the fact that they are actually harmless, people will slowly stop and instead use that effort that they have into helping.

McMahon, Frances Nankin and Jesse. “Helping Children Overcome a Fear of Bugs.” PBS, Public Broadcasting Service, 12 Apr. 2017, www.pbs.org/parents/expert-tips-advice/2017/04/helping-children-overcome-fear-bugs/. This is a website provided by PBS to parents for advice on how to allow children to overcome their fear of bugs. Here, there is an acknowledgement that having a fear such as this builds barriers for children who want to explore, but this fear prevents them from doing so. Some of the techniques that they mentioned is explaining that some of the bugs that may seem scary are actually harmless, think about their own reaction, and make it more of a common topic to talk about. This intrigued me because one of factors why I feel as though kids are afraid of bugs is because their parents are and may share this similar mindset.

Miniland. “The Benefits of Interactive Games for Children.” Blog about Educational Toys and Trends in Early Childhood Education, Miniland Educational, 7 Mar. 2017, usa.minilandeducational.com/family/the-benefits-of-interactive-games-for-children. This website was created to provide the best means of learning styles when it comes to children, touching on the topic of interactive games. It provides an explanation on the fact that children generally lose their span of attention in a matter of minutes. Having a game that can also include competition will give them a sense of entertainment, making them feel as though they want to learn, versus that they are being forced to. Not only that but it also helps their motor skills to think in certain situations and build relationships with others while working on that specific game. Using this knowledge, it gives me an idea of how I would like to make my activity, possibly leading into something that requires teamwork.

“Nature vs. Nurture.” GoodTherapy.org - Find the Right Therapist, GoodTherapy.org Therapy Blog, 28 Sept. 2018, www.goodtherapy.org/blog/psychpedia/nature-versus-nurture. This is a website from Good Therapy, discussing nature in comparison to nurture and the differences, although that they both affect mental health. A big question is when people start developing these fears such as insects in the first place. Something that is debated on is that in some occasions, children are blatantly brave when it comes to insects since many things are new to them, and curiosity being a natural thing that occurs. Although sometimes this leads into it being a fear of what they do not know of instead. With the topic on nurture, even if they may be curious, growing up around people or the idea that bugs are harmful and scary, whether it is in media or surrounding people, will influence that mindset into something that is rather entirely different.

Romm, Cari. “Insects Are Scary Because Your Brain Confuses Disgust With Fear.” The Cut, The Cut, 31 Oct. 2016, www.thecut.com/2016/10/why-are-so-many-people-scared-of-bugs.html. This is a website by Cari Romm from The Cut on why there is such a prominent fear when it comes to bugs. A claim that she made is that people commonly mistaken disgust for fear. She brought up a point that even an ecologist like Jeffrey Lockwood who works with bugs, had a panic attack when he was encountered with a swarm of grasshoppers, the amount and behavior of them overwhelming him. A part of this is knowing that there are certain bugs that do cause harm, bringing people to the conclusion that all bugs are harmful in their own sense. Along with that is the idea that there is something programmed in humans called a “rejection response” since these animals are not cuddly nor fuzzy, some of the few traits that people associate with cuteness. It is said to be that when things are seen as cute, people feel a need to protect it. Knowing these certain phrases from psychologists will provide me with another branch of information that I could continue my research in.

“The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.” Butterfly Life Cycle, ansp.org/visit/activities/#meet. This is the official website of The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University containing the different types of activities in the museum revolved around children, where they can meet the scientists and have animal encounters. This source is useful because it gave the realization that many people have the ideology that creepy crawlers, even that name has a negative connotation itself, but when it is presented to them in person, a feeling of fascination takes over. In a sense it is the fear of the unknown that spurs this feeling of uncomfort out from people. Along with that, it gave me different ideas of what can be included during my presentation at school, where I would want to be able to present an animal. Once granted the permission to do so, having a bug in person may also teach the audience to be interested in these animals, setting back their fear.

Caroline Pitone - Capstone

Posted by Caroline Pitone in Capstone · Estey/Menasion · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 8:45 pm

I´ve always been an individual wondering what the world was like and how it would run once I was on my own. In school we learn important subjects such as math, history, english, and so forth. While I always felt that these were important subjects that should be required, I always wondered how I would take on the world without any real advice. Not everyone has a companion to teach them. For my 2019 Capstone for senior year, I chose to create a website that is informative relating to what to expect after graduating high school and being your own adult. I collected answers from a survey asking individuals what they knew about information from money, savings, homestay/care, all the way to nutrition. I wanted to create this website for an easy access to some quick questions one might have while discovering life on their own. While being around high schoolers for the past four years, I´ve heard many talk about what it would mean to them to have a lecture for what to expect and how to deal with things as they grow up and take on their own responsibilities. Since the beginning of senior year, I have wanted to this as my capstone. Thinking of an idea was tricky, and I wanted to do something that could really help another student. While creating my website, I did research to collect all of the information needed for my site. I sat and thought about what would really be useful for teenagers and reflected on myself for what I wish I knew.

While reading through this link, I found that it gives information on how to pay bills on time, ways to pay your bills (including online or over the phone), and what to do in a crisis situation. Each section has short and brief description per topic. This will be helpful for me when think about my design layout, while I am trying to keep my word count short on the website. It is inspiring me to create a logical design for my website. It also is giving my information on these topics that I did not think about including before hand. "Tax Basics: A Beginners Guide to Taxes." Findlaw. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://tax.findlaw.com/federal-taxes/tax-basics-a-beginners-guide-to-taxes.html. https://tax.findlaw.com/federal-taxes/tax-basics-a-beginners-guide-to-taxes.html This website is a website where it shows the understanding of taxes for beginners. I am expecting my audience to mostly be beginners, in the sense that they are just learning what taxing/taxes means, and how it is effective. This a very resourceful website since it shows all of the different kinds of taxes. It gives a list of all of them, that I can then further research. It also talks about deductions, which is a critical part in learning about the way this routine works. This website does not give super detailed description, but it gives me quick and easy things to look at in order to further research for this project. Johnson, Holly. This is really important for me to look at. I do not want my website to be all factual, but also opinionated. This is because it gives the audience something to relate to. It talks about rental scares, and what people wish they knew. Key thing, what people wish they “knew”. This is a very big deal, since this is the whole point of my website. I am trying to show what people wish they knew. It talks about being careful with decision making, and explanation as to why. With this, it will be very helpful to cite a source on my website. Advisors, EP Wealth. "The Importance of Teaching Your Kids About Money." TheStreet. July 02, 2018. When kids graduate, or obtain jobs, they don't really know how to control or manage it. I’ve struggled with this myself, and I wish I knew more information about how money worked before starting my bank account. This will give me information on why it is important to teach your children about money and so on if schools don't. This information is given by someone who has experienced trouble with learning about these things. It is similar to my last source in the sense of coming from a different perspective

Kimberly Gucciardi-Kriegh Capstone

For my capstone, I spent the year working on SLA’s Community Involvement Club (CIC). I scheduled volunteer opportunities that have more meaning, trained underclassmen to take over the club after I graduate, and creating a more organized system of informing students about upcoming events by making a website. The mission is to create a strong CIC staff that can reinforce the system I have been putting into place, all in hopes to improve the club and create a system that will serve the community. During CIC staff meetings, I make lesson plans for them, we brainstorm, and work on upcoming events. I have been curating a “master club document” and a club google drive folder with all the clubs contacts, advice, and steps to take. My guiding question for my capstone is “how can I create a lasting impact on the community in Philadelphia and SLA” During this capstone, I learned about how to improve my leadership skills. It was also rewarding to teach these lessons for the team and make sure they get something out of it. The most challenging part of my capstone process was having to find organizations in Philadelphia that make a real difference with organizations that fight for the homeless, rights for communities including people of color and LGBTQ+, and more. I wrote some personal reflection along with interviews from the CIC team, speaking about their experience as a leader and volunteer.

The website is constantly being updated with new events or lack thereof after the event passes and it is not necessary to promote any longer. On this website, you can find some pictures from this year's events under gallery and interviews with all the staff.

Capstone Bibliography

Bertram, Joyce. “How volunteerism can change your world” TEDxVilnius. May 5 2015.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXb6bDX9FDo

I have been apart of the Community Involvement Club at SLA since freshman year and led the club junior and senior year, this video was a nice reminder of why we volunteer and it expanded my ideas of why helping others is important. Something I discussed with my mentor is the importance of having a strong mission statement and this video gave me a lot of ideas on what could be included in one for CIC. It also expanded my knowledge behind why people volunteer. This video is what CIC is about and an inspiring message to get students to help. The speaker at this TEDtalk has gone on lots of mission trips and works at a non-profit where she gets volunteers to go on the trip.

Boyer, Nicole. “Encourage The Young Ones: Inspiring Students To Volunteer” Sadiq, Basil, Volunteer Match, January 9th 2017. https://blogs.volunteermatch.org/engagingvolunteers/2017/01/09/encourage-the-young-ones-inspiring-students-to-volunteer/

This website gave me ideas on ways to advertise volunteering to students. It expanded my perspective as to why it is important for students in particular to serve the community. It targets six different strategies and key components to making volunteering accessible and exciting to students. This site is practical to my capstone since it is tips for students. The tips given seem realistic for my project and I hope to implement some of them to my leadership skills. It gave me the idea to have some meetings with the Community Involvement Club staff and give them this information for this year and after I have graduated. The thing is, this source has great ideas but I want the SLA students to really want to volunteer. This source is very dedicated to volunteering and provides expertise on how to run non-profit organizations and ways to help locally.

Daugherty, Sue. “Food is Medicine” MANNA, Philadelphia

https://www.mannapa.org/volunteer/group-volunteers/

MANNA is really what inspired me to change the way the CIC club was organized last year. A big part of the change is finding more meaningful volunteer events to advertise. We currently have two dates for 10 SLA students per day to go work at the MANNA food kitchen close to the Franklin Institute in February. I hope the event is successful and we are able to form a relationship with them and help more people there in the future. This is an example of a local non-profit we are trying to help this year. MANNA has been accredited non-profit in Philadelphia since 1990.

Kuzma, Kay. “What Makes a Team Strong” Project Appleseed. September 1992.

http://www.appleseeds.org/team-strong.htm

While the majority of my capstone is creating a strong leadership team but this site provided me with more information about what makes a large group of people function. The CIC staff will benefit from the other tips about leadership but this source is more about the importance of organization and how to start creating systems that work for a large group of people. These are generally good skills for everyone involved in CIC to have moving forward. Project Appleseed is a nationwide non-profit that specifically helps volunteers. They specialize in educating people and hosting events on how to be a leader and help others.

“Making a difference through volunteers and nonprofit careers” Learn How to Become.

https://www.learnhowtobecome.org/volunteer-and-nonprofit-careers/

The majority of my project surrounds itself with SLA students and young people. This website provided me with more personal information. Currently, I am going into college undecided and nonprofit work is something for me to consider. This website really broke down my understanding regarding what that would mean for my future. This is something I could tell my CIC staff about if they are interested. This also provided me insight about where we are volunteering and what that means to the company involved. Learn How to Become always bases information on career experts, data, and primary sources. They are always up-to-date and is a frequent resource at Duke University, Stanford University, and more.

Reid, Stephanie. “Find Your Path to Civic Engagement” Serve Philadelphia.

https://serve.volunteermatch.org/

A large component of research for my capstone has been finding events. I have to keep in mind that the majority of us are under eighteen, we are unable to volunteer during school hours, and students at SLA come from all different areas and it would be helpful to help in a central location. This is just one of the government websites that I have found that work to help people locally. This provided me with more trustworthy websites to consult or non-profit leaders I am able to reach out to in the future. Last year, during the colder months, we hosted a school bake sale and donated the money to the National Immigration Law Center and I think doing in school events would be a convenient way for students to help out this winter.

“Serve Your Community- Cities” National Community and Service/ Americorps and Senior Corps

https://www.nationalservice.gov/serve/via/cities

Moving forward with writing my report, this site could be useful because it has volunteering statics about Philadelphia. This will most likely come up when writing my report and even if it does not it gave me information about Philadelphia residents helpful behavior that I found really interesting. I can talk about how even if people do not serve the community they do other things to help each other everyday. Since the premise of my project is helping people, this is generally good information to know. This information is from the National Community and Service that reports data and groups of people that are in need such as veterans.

Since a large aspect of my capstone focuses on becoming a stronger leader myself and then working to train underclassmen to lead the club after I graduate, I need to dive deeper into what makes a strong and reliable leader. These tips are accessible to read and reasonable goals for us to follow which will make it easy for me to present to the CIC staff. This inspired me to present this information to them during meetings in the spring. The Center for Creative Leadership is globally recognized for promoting the power of leadership and works on teaching it to people.

Winerman, Lea. “Helping Others, Helping Ourselves” No 11, Volume 37. Page 38. American Psychological Association, December 2006.

https://www.apa.org/monitor/dec06/helping.aspx

This topic does not necessarily relate to my capstone project directly but it did give me a deeper understanding of the motives and psychology behind volunteering. It explained how in the human brain, there is a balance between actually having the compelling feeling to helping others and doing nice things to feel good about yourself. This is not something I will be presenting in my capstone but it expanded my thinking beyond my personal motive which is to actually help others. The American Psychological Association was founded at Clark University in 1892 and they are the largest professional organization of physcology.

Wu, Huiting. “Social Impact of Volunteerism” Points of Light Institute, Atlanta Georgia, August 30 2011.

http://www.pointsoflight.org/sites/default/files/site-content/files/social_impact_of_volunteerism_pdf.pdf

This was one of the most useful resources for my project. It targets the different aspects of volunteering, meaning how it affects those volunteer, the economy, nonprofits, and the people that are receiving the help. It mostly explained how it affects the people volunteering which is the basis of my project and how much it would help to create a more social atmosphere and make a club where everyone knows each other. It also provided me with some personal knowledge about the business side of non-profit work. This inspired me to think about asking teachers again if they would be interested in sponsoring our club. Right now we have a teacher sponsor but I am going to look for someone dedicated to volunteering like we had a few years ago. Points of Light Institute is a trusted non-profit started by George H. W. Bush and works to provide people with advice on how to solve social problems in our community.

Topic Summary

Helping out the community and preparing for my future

Project Abstract

For my Inquiry Capstone Project, I wanted to combine helping my community and preparing for my future as an Electrician. I joined a trade organization called First builders and they prepare people for their future trade jobs. My project contains two components, There is a tutoring portion, where I would go every monday night for 2 hours to receive help from professional trade people who prepare us to take the final test for whichever trade we are studying for. We then apply this math to the physical part to my project. The other part to my project is the physical projects that I’ve worked on. One of these projects is a new Sanctuary for the Kingdom Restoration Ministries (KRM) church in Northeast Philadelphia. My other project I worked on was installing new lockers for my old school, John Story Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences located on Germantown Avenue in Chestnut hill. I learned many things during construction process such as, Safety precautions, the Application process for the actual apprenticeship program, the math that is involved, and how to properly use tools.

1.  "40 Construction Tools List with Images for Building Construction." The Constructor. December 03, 2017. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://theconstructor.org/construction/construction-tools-list-images-building/20238/.

This source provides information about the tools that might be used when doing construction. Without tools, you won’t be able to work on the project that you are trying to complete. While having tools is important, you need to know how to use them and when you go into the apprentice program, they will teach you how to use certain tools and when to use them. Having tools with you really come in handy because you feel like you can fix anything with them. Tools relate to my Capstone because I need them when making the Sanctuary.

           2. "Acute Silicosis - Occupational Safety and Health ..." Accessed January 25, 2019.   https://www.osha.gov/OshDoc/data_General_Facts/crystalline-factsheet.pdf.

This source provides information about the importance of fall protection. Fall protection is one the most important things make sure that you have before working on the project that you are working on. Fall protection falls under the OSHA category. It includes things like Guardrails and the different parts like the toeboard, mid rail, and top rail. Using a  Harness can also prevent a fall. This relates to my capstone because It requires to know a lot about fall protection. You need to know how to apply fall protection equipment to you because it can save you from severe injuries and death.

3. DIY Network. "Everything You Need to Know About Walls." DIY. March 26, 2015.   Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/rooms-and-spaces/walls-and-ceilings/everything-you-need-to-know-about-walls.

This source provides information about how to build walls for houses or any other building. I chose this source because it should help me know what to do before I go and start to work on the sanctuary and I won’t have to ask my mentors so many questions. This source talks a lot about the different ways a house can be built saying that they can be built out of wood, Steel, and concrete. It talks about how steel and Concrete are used everywhere but wood is the material that is the most common to use. The walls for the sanctuary that I am working on will be made out of steel.

4. "How To Join The IBEW Apprenticeship Program." Electrician Apprentice HQ. January 04, 2019. Accessed January 24, 2019. https://electricianapprenticehq.com/how-to-join-ibew-apprenticeship/.

This source provides information about how to do a proper interview. Before I can

get into the First builders Pre-apprenticeship program, I need to be interviewed by the mentors that run the program.  I found out about this source from one of my advisors and she sent me this link to help me prepare for my interview with the program. It is a really reliable source that gives you good advice about what to do and what not to do during the interview. It starts out by talking about what the program is and how you can have a successful interview.

           5. https://www.osha.gov/OshDoc/data_General_Facts/federal-employee- factsheet.html

I found this source useful because It explains the OSHA organization very fluently. It explains the rights of federal workers, How agencies protect employees, and policies when working. It talks about identifying and eliminating work hazards. Some rights that are stated in this source is that workers can Report and request inspections of unsafe or unhealthful working conditions to federal officials, including the Secretary of Labor, Participate in their agency's health and safety program and related activities on official time, Access their agency's safety and health information, including data on hazardous substances in the workplace, Comment on proposed agency standards that differ from OSHA standards, Obtain copies of medical and exposure records and many more rights.

6. "The Importance of Personal Protective Equipment." Results Staffing. December 29, 2015. Accessed January 25, 2019. http://results-staffing.com/index.php/importance-personal-protective-equipment/.

This source provides information about the importance of safety equipment. The union refers to this as Personal protection equipment (PPE). When working, It is important to wear safety equipment at all times to avoid injuries. This is another source that relates to OSHA training that they give us in our program. It talks about the different types of equipment like headgear, eye and face protection, hand and skin protection, hearing protection, and respiratory protection. This relates to my capstone project because it is mandatory to have equipment on at all times on a worksite and it is important to know how to apply them all.

7.  Quinn, Bridget. "Preparing for the Aptitude Test and the Interview." NIETC. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.nietc.org/preparing-for-aptitude-interview.html.

This source provides information about the Aptitude test and how to prepare for it. The source includes youtube videos explaining how to prepare for it. The Aptitude test is the first step to becoming a tradesperson and you need to pass that in order to become an apprentice so you can start getting hands on experience with your trade. It talks about what is going to be on the test. This source relates to my capstone because It talks about the math portion to my capstone

8. WikiHow. "How to Erect Scaffolding." WikiHow. November 17, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.wikihow.com/Erect-Scaffolding.

I found this source useful because It explains how to assemble a scaffold. A scaffold is An elevated temporary work platform that workers use when working on a project. Scaffolds are great when working at extreme heights like ceilings and roofs. They fall under the OSHA category as well.

9. "Working at Height." Health Services - Safe Use of Bed Rails. Accessed January 25, 2019. http://www.hse.gov.uk/toolbox/height.htm.

I found this source useful because It explains how to remain safe when working at extreme heights. Heights can be an intimidating thing and most people are scared of them. This source tells you all about the Do’s and Don’ts when working at heights. It is unsafe to work at these heights without any fall protection. Fall protection is required for a worker that is working higher than 6 feet. It gives advice about situations where it is not safe to work. It talks about the law that is for working at heights which are called “Work at Height Regulations 2005.” The purpose of this law is to prevent death and injury from heights. This source relates to my capstone because while we build the walls for the room, we work at high heights.

10. How to apply to IBEW Local 98. (n.d.). Retrieved from http://www.atei98.org/local/home/pages/application.php

This source provides all of the information that I need for the Electricians Apprenticeship program that I am applying for. It tells me all the requirements that i need to be eligible to take the test and to be apart of the program. It tells us where to apply and how to apply for the program. This Website talks about the Safety requirements, The Application, The apprenticeship Model, etc. It also provides information about what the program consist of so people can decide if this is what they really want to do because the trade business is hard and not for everyone.

SLA Mentor: Mr. Hernandez

Topic Summary:

Figuring out how to effectively create a club at SLA, with there being a focus on reducing students’ stress levels based on the activities.

Project Abstract:

I created a karaoke club that would consist of students being able to sing and dance along to their favorite songs in a judgment-free zone. I began with putting up posters around the school, asking a friend to design one for me that would catch the eye of those who were interested. As it was only possible for meetings to occur during one lunch band, it was difficult to reach a larger amount of students who were interested in attending. I held four meetings, with required surveys for students to complete before and after they experienced the club. In the surveys, there were questions regarding their level of stress, how they felt, what they do to help themselves, and what can be improved in the club for next time. Each meeting was different because the number of people who attended was not consistent and the energy was either very high or significantly low, all of which affected the way the group as a whole participated. It was difficult trying to contain everyone and the kinds of music and activities we ended up doing when it came to deciding on a song or video on Youtube, it spiraled a little out of my control. I attempted to make changes, which included a judging round but it didn’t work well since people didn’t enjoy it, or want to participate. Ultimately, I decided to keep the genre of music to pop for a more universal reach as a constant throughout each meeting.

For one of my club meetings, I want to include pop songs that are from the early 2000’s and 2010’s and this source goes into the evolution and how it has become different over the past century. It surprisingly goes into copyright issues, and the formation of laws in America to prevent copying, and to make more money and produce original songs. Genres like Jazz and the Blues were very popular in the 20s, and eventually the radio began to play different kinds of music once musicians started creating other sounds and lyrics. It went from saxophones and trumpets, to electric guitars and soundboard rhythms.

This source is crucial since it is going to be a main part of how I am introducing my club and sharing with others of how I love pop-punk. It explains in depth of the origins from the 70’s and 80’s, and the difference in how ‘hard’ it used to be with vocals and instruments. There was a line of what made a band either pop-punk or hardcore, with certain characteristics to categorize them. The main era of pop-punk from more recent years started in the 90’s, with huge success from bands like Green Day. It evolved more as the years went on, bands like Blink 182 and Simple Plan became more popular and it continued growing into lots of more exposure and growth in the genre.

  1. Hagan, Abigail. “The Power of Music Therapy .” Belmont University, Belmont University, www.belmont.edu/burs/pdf/Music - Hagan.pdf.

I found this research paper from a student at Belmont University, and she wrote about music therapy and how it actually works and is effective to those who are interested in using that process. It has become more established overtime in the world of healthcare, and targets specific situations such as relieving stress, pain, memory, and communication. It goes into multiple fields like psychology and physicians, so it is not limited to one career only. I thought it was so interesting that students are becoming more intrigued by researching the cause and effects of music, and how there is a lot of data to back up the way it helps a lot people out.

  1. Iyer, Pico. “Daisuke Inoue.” Time, Time Inc., 23 Aug. 1999, content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2054546,00.html.

This source was important for me to include because it gives a large overview and information about the man who created the very first karaoke machine. It was a bit difficult for me to find sources that explained his life, because he is still alive so there isn’t a lot of specific pieces that could be researched. Daisuke Inoue had friends who were in a band, and he was inspired of how they could read music and retain the melodies and lyrics all from memory. He then made it a mission to save up money to have his own version of karaoke, and sing along to different tapes.

  1. “Karaoke History - Do You Know How It Started?” DJ-BrianC - Music For All Occasions, www.djbrianc.us/dj-services/karaoke-dj/karaoke-history/.

My first step into doing research had to be about learning how karaoke came to be, and how it has evolved overtime. This source goes into different decades of how it began, and starts out in the 60s which was surprising to me. It has become a large phenomenon in America, but came from Japan and someone who is Filipino. This will help me understand how it spread quickly in a time when there was less technology to spread something like karaoke. I think that it’s very interesting of how there was a mention of stereos and equipment becoming more high end so that the karaoke experience is able to become increasingly better.

  1. Schoenherr, Neil. “Discovering Why Study Groups Are More Effective | The Source | Washington University in St. Louis.” The Source, 13 Jan. 2016, https://source.wustl.edu/2006/07/discovering-why-study-groups-are-more-effective/.

This source immediately jumps into how students gravitate towards doing work in study groups, and how figuring out that there is a pattern to go along with this. It makes me think of how SLA is surrounded by working in groups always, using our collaboration core value to efficiently get a lot more work done rather than have a bunch of independent assignments. The two patterns were ‘the gaze’, looking in a certain way only at your notebook, or always up to show confidence and preparation. The other pattern is ‘absorbing the materia;’, including in depth discussions and allowing more room to understand and actually grasp the material they are learning.

  1. Stangor, Charles. “Principles of Social Psychology – 1st International Edition.” Introduction to Sociology – 1st Canadian Edition, BCcampus, 26 Sept. 2014, opentextbc.ca/socialpsychology/chapter/affect-behavior-and-cognition/.

The biggest piece from this article that resonates with me and the planning of my club is how Social Cognition was one of the first pieces of vocabulary and information given. It’s when you try and understand or predict the behavior of others and yourself in social activities, and me planning out everything to happen for this club is me doing exactly that. It goes further into how people may interpret and understand that situation or event, and how every person has a different opinion and way of taking something. I find that super interesting because I intend on showing pop-punk as my first genre and although I may love it, others may not and find the music offensive in some cases.

  1. “Why Do People Go to Karaoke Alone in Japan? – Japan Info.” Japan Info, jpninfo.com/120494.

This source goes more into the karaoke city of origin, Japan. It’s incredible that it directly translates to ‘empty orchestra’, being very self-explanatory about what the actions are for those who participate in it. It lists multiple reasons of why one should go to a karaoke bar, or rent a room called a Karaoke Box, and experience a real part of the Japanese culture while travelling. There is a brief mention of how lots of people even attend karaoke alone, and how it’s more of a bigger impact if you do so. It helps with relieving stress, confidence, and practising singing.

  1. Frontiers in Psychology. The Psychological Functions of Music Listening. 2013, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3741536/.

I found this website, and I was interested to read it because it is from the US National Library of Medicine, and National Institutions of Health. It explains how music is one of the most relaxing and important aspects to someone’s daily life. This source goes further into some history of music, and how it has been around for a long time, and scholars for years have been researching the way that music is purposeful. Music has evolved and become so different over the centuries, but there has been significant research about music becoming a way to bring pleasure and relaxation, but there is a certain limit to how far that can reach someone.

  1. “Stress.” Mental Health Foundation, 7 Nov. 2018, www.mentalhealth.org.uk/a-to-z/s/stress.

This source is from an official mental health foundation, so I knew it was a solid source to include. I wanted to have the knowledge on stress, mainly because it is what I am trying to “measure”. Stress is when your body is responding to an event or situation that exudes a lot of pressure. Having this source go specifically into what triggers and changes occur helps me understand what not to do when I conduct my club meetings. The questions asked were very specific to different mental and physical effects, and there are many solutions and tips that can try to ease someone experiencing high levels of stress.
