Quarter 1 Artwork

Posted by Isabel Medlock in Advanced Art - Hull - a1 on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 6:02 pm

In the beginning of the quarter I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do for my pieces or what I wanted my pieces to convey but as I worked through all of the assignments I learned more about myself as an artist. When actually sitting down to work on a piece I found it wasn’t that difficult to be inspired. I would just look around me and see something that inspired me or I would think about something happening my life and would be inspired. I found that I didn’t have to know what I wanted a piece to symbolize before I started working on it but that I would find what it symbolized by working on it.

I collaborated on the ceiling tile with Kiamesso DaSilva. Initially, we wanted to paint steps, which would be inscribed with words in Arabic which would translate to “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” leading up to a golden door. In the background there would be swirls and other similar decorations. We decided a ceiling tile would not be the best medium to create this and decided instead to do ceiling tile inspired by sari patterns. We decided on painting a big pearly white swirl that would take up to tiles and decorate the edges around the swirl with small dots and other shapes to create an intricate border for the swirl. We chose to use cool, light colors for our piece because we wanted it to seem wintery. My favorite season is winter and we wanted the piece to remind people of snow and ice and the winter in general.

For the choose your own drawing assignment I chose to draw my cat. I adopted my cat just two weeks before I started on the assignment so I was feeling very inspired by her and I was very excited to draw her. In my drawing I wanted to capture my cat’s calmness and serenity and inspire a sense of serenity and peace in others. I also wanted my piece to express my love and appreciation for her.

For my jack-o-lantern I decided to carve Hogwarts. When I was younger I loved the Harry Potter books. I thought it would be fun to carve a castle and decided I would do Hogwarts. It was a lot harder than I expected it to be but I enjoyed the process and I am pretty proud of the final result. I wanted to piece to remind people of their childhood and the books they read and loved. To carve the castle I printed out a simple drawing of Hogwarts and taped it onto my pumpkin. Then I used a pumpkin carving knife to cut along the edges until I had the shape I wanted. After that I drew in a few details with a sharpie.

Initially, I didn’t feel very inspired or excited to draw a self-portrait. I have drawn or painted self-portraits before in other art classes but I have always found it difficult. On the day I started the drawing I was pretty tired and that is why my eyes are not fully open in the portrait. My lack of inspiration and motivation to do a self-portrait is reflected in my drawing. I wanted the piece to show how tired I was after working on several projects and staying up late several nights in a row. I wanted the piece to show that sometimes life is easy and fun but there are also times when you have to work hard in spite of being tired. Looking back on the process I found that I enjoyed attempting to draw a self-portrait. It was challenging and that made it more exciting.

When I started these assignments, there was no real goal. I don’t think there actually is any huge symbolic meaning to them at all.

To be honest, most of what I did was pour myself into the art, my interests, my hobbies, my awkwardness, whatever.

And with being basically raised with the internet, and coming to SLA, I have discovered that there are a lot of people like me.

I want to be relatable to these people, and… reach out to them. Make them smile a tiny bit when they see my art. Make them laugh, and cringe in a sort of not sympathy that comes with understanding.

I want to laugh a bit with my friends about that one time I spent four hours painting a pony head and putting it on the ceiling, or the other time I just sat alone in health, and decided that drawing cats was a higher priority than doing actual project work.

I want to be comfortable with myself, which I’m not always, and art makes it fun and lighthearted sometimes.

This is what’s going on inside my head.

Quarter #1 Artwork

Posted by Kevin Courtney in Advanced Art - Hull - a1 on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 2:46 pm

Its another year of art and I wanted to continue what I did last year. I know it is the same exact course as last year but it will be a great opportunity to improve from last year. These were the projects I did for this first quarter….

Ceiling Tile: This was my favorite project. I really love to paint. I decided to go with an SLA type tile, by creating the main key about the school, which is the rocket. I love how the colors stand out in all of his paintings. I feel great on how it came out. I like the the kind of colors I used. My favorite part is the fire. It doesn’t look like an ordinary fire take off. I just wanted to be creative and take it my own way.

Drawing of anything I want to draw: As of last year I really wanted to continue my legacy of pencil drawings. It’s funny my girlfriend inspired me to do something with a heart in it. So I decided to do a heart and flower type mix. I enjoyed using different shades of pencil.

Jack-o-lantern: Its another pencil drawing because, like I said last year I like to make pencil drawings. The jack-o-lantern has an evil look. As you can see I decided to make different patterns on the jack-o-lantern because I wanted to be creative and have fun with, after all I am the artist.

Self Portrait: I was able to draw myself again. This year was totally different because one I had longer hair, and two I’m wearing a hat in the photo. Personally I like this portrait better because I think I look better with longer hair.

In conclusion I enjoyed redoing this course again because I know it will be a great year and a fun and relaxing time!

Q1 Art Slideshow

Posted by Quinn Grzywinski in Advanced Art - Hull - a1 on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at 2:56 pm

My experience with art is very vague. I usually don’t have a particular reason to draw what I draw. So with that in mind, as an expression of myself, I like to keep things simple most of the time.

Everything you will see in this slide-show was drawn either with simply a pencil or a brush. There’s no special techniques that need to be known, my artist-progress if very much just drawing whatever comes to mind, and if that usually doesn’t require anything too complex.

None of this means I don’t think much of my art. The problem is simply that I’m not very good at it, which means my ability to bring what I draw to life is severely limited.  Everything you will see in this slideshow is best, more sincere effort, and even if it doesn’t look like it, I put a lot of myself into almost all of these works, one way or another. It’s why many of them are so vague, they only mean something to me. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, I haven’t decided yet.

Art Q1 Slide show

Ceiling tile -
My passion is soccer and I wanted to reflect upon soccer itself.  My favorite soccer player is Mesut Özil.  I reference him in the entirety of my picture.  The cleats have the first letter of his last name and the ball has his entire name.  SLA Boys soccer had such a good year, moving up to A division.  I had to make a ceiling tile that reflected soccer and the soccer player I look up to.

Choose my own drawling -
I chose to draw very basic things.  When I was younger I had art classes and during those art class I drew basic objects and I would shade it after.  For this drawing I drew an apple and I shaded it.  I take pride in the skills that I have acquired from that art class.

Pumpkin -
For the pumpkin I wanted to something different than carving a pumpkin and different than just drawing your most basic pumpkin.  I wanted to draw a pumpkin mixed with a plant.  My pumpkin has all the features of a scary pumpkin, but also has roots coming out of it.

Self Portrait -
My self portrait does not look exactly like me and that is because I drew me in the future.  I have the glasses and the facial hair.  But I look a lot older and more sophisticated.  I envision that I am about 2 to 3 years through college and I am getting ready to be on my  own.

Lukas Supovitz Aznar Q1 art

ARTIST STATEMENT:
Throughout the process of this quarter I questioned what made me who I am. This coincidentally was perfect because I could create a piece of artwork on a ceiling tile. For some reason I thought of Sponge-bob, a character from a show that I loved as a kid. I chose to draw him because it made me feel how I felt as a kid, which I think is critical to utilize while making art. My favorite part about my piece of artwork was that it took me back to imagination. That is one thing that I think many people tend to lose as they grow up. My second piece of artwork was my take on a album cover that I always loved. Kanye west has always been my idol since I was a little kid, So to continue with the theme of a kids dream, I drew his album. I used a lot of what I had learned in my lesson review to draw this, by starting with shapes and then continuing finding other shapes to start with. My favorite assignment was the Pumpkin assignment. I made a despicable me minion, because I loved the look on the pumpkin. I wanted to make small shapes into something that people could recognize and I did that with this depiction of the Minion.
My final piece of artwork was my self portrait. It was very hard for me to do this because it was surprising to realize how little I look at myself. I had to recognize the little things in my face that I usually do not. I was able to do this and did a really good job of not over thinking anything and just doing my best going off of a photo. In the end I wanted to bring the kid mindset back to my artwork, with creative thinking.
