Quarter 4 Art Work

Posted by Mia Concepcion in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 12:13 pm

For this quarter in art class, I created a figure drawings, line drawings, digital drawings, a space drawing, a texture drawing, a value drawing, and an elements of art drawing. I gained inspiration for some of these art pieces through different settings, images, and existing art pieces. For the figure drawings I used a pencil and eraser for both the smaller sketches and the final large piece. For the line drawings, I used black pen. For the digital drawings I used google drawings on my computer. For this assignment I was inspired by settings of the ocean and the desert, as well as cool colors in general for two of the drawings. For the illusion of space drawing I was inspired by an image of a light bulb. For the texture drawing I recreated a still life of vegetables using a pencil and an eraser. For the value drawing I was inspired by an image of a conch shell. Lastly, for the elements of art drawing I was inspired by a vibrant palm tree that had a calming pink and blue background.

My favorite material to use this quarter was colored pencils, because they look nice when doing shading to give off the illusion of texture, space, and value. Some techniques I used often this quarter were shading and blending. I made the pencil drawings appear as if the lead went from very heavy to very light, through blending and shading. I did the same for the colored pencil drawing. During this quarter I used different sized paper, pencils, erasers, pens, and colored pencils. I utilized my studio time by completing some art assignments during class, and even ahead of time by starting other assignments earlier than I had to. I also utilized my home time by working on some of my art there, too. Overall, this quarter I was able to practice more elements of art and different techniques that I don’t often use, and my skills in these areas became more advanced.

Q3 Final Projects

Over the course of Quarter 3 we worked on plenty of shading type drawings. To show our ability to texturize different sketches. During studio time I mostly brainstormed because most assignments were given two weeks of time. I thought that was too much for the drawings we were given. However, this quarter's sketches weren't as hard from previous quarters.

This past quarter we completed five assignments, creating six pieces of art in the process. For the first assignment, we were supposed to draw a bicycle. I didn't want to draw just a bicycle, so I drew a bicycle-riding merchant using pencil and then inking the lines with micron pens. I admittedly got a bit carried away on this piece. For the first part of the optical illusion assignment, I shaded each quadrant of the piece with vine charcoal. The second part was completed very close to the deadline so I was only able to draw and shade the spheres with pencil. For the shading forms assignment, I drew and shaded a sphere, a cube, and a cylinder with pencil. For the eye drawing, I drew my friend's eye instead of my own as I felt it would provide more of a challenge. I, once again, used only pencil. For the mandala, I used pencil for the outlines and contrasting red and blue colored pencils for the rest. The designs are rather plain and are partially obscured by the colored pencil, but I'm satisfied with the end result.

Week 10 - Link (Q3 Art)

Posted by Justin Peccina in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 5:49 pm

This quarter in art, there were 5 different assignments within 10 weeks. They were a bike drawing, an optical illusion, shading forms, an eye drawing, and a mandala. All of the assignments required different approaches and materials.
The first assignment of the quarter was to draw a bike without having a reference image. I decided to draw a very basic image first, and add on whatever I missed afterwards. I chose to use pencil for this assignment, as drawing from memory can be difficult. That meant I would need to erase, so I drew very light lines. I spent the first half of the assignment drawing what I thought a bike looked like, and spent the second half drawing the missing parts. It was interesting to see how difficult it was to draw complex something without reference, because most assignments had some type of reference in the past.
During the next two weeks, the assignment was to draw two optical illusions. I decided to use circles because they are very simple shapes, and it is easy to form an illusion from them. Once again, I drew both optical illusions using pencils. I also used a ruler to create the lines in both drawings.
Weeks 5 and 6 consisted of practice with shading. I found shading to be a very helpful lesson which I tried to incorporate in the assignment after. I also learned from this assignment the importance of using a key. With the key, I was able to keep consistent shading levels and refer back to them to see if I was actually using varying levels of shading or not. Pencil was the material used. It was interesting to observe how shading changes based on the shape and position of an object.
The fourth assignment was to draw your eye. Since I was able to use reference, I was able to create most of the drawing altogether. This was unlike the bicycle drawing, where I had to add parts on after I drew the base. Having a reference also helped with proportion and placement.
The final assignment of the quarter was to create a mandala. I used a ruler, a pencil, and markers to create the final product. I attempted to have symmetry within my mandala and I wanted to keep it as a circle. This was my favorite assignment of this quarter because I enjoyed being able to use color in an assignment and see how different shapes changed the product. If I could redo the assignment, I'd try to make it more circular because once I added color it become uneven. I also really enjoyed thinking about what shapes and colors to use and where, because changing one piece would change the whole mandala. In general, I think for next quarter it would be interesting to test different mediums, so I can find one I to use more often.
All of the assignments from this quarter were mainly drawn through the use of pencil. Because of this, I believe the shading was a really interesting assignment that I will definitely use in the fourth quarter.

For this quarter I have done many different assignment arts assignments that could have done a lot better on and ones I did really good on.
For week 1&2 I have draw a bike using a pencil first then outlining it with a sharpie. I liked how I draw the it but I could I missed out with the color which costed me 5 points of my grade. If I was to do this over I would add more details around the bike to make it pop out more. Also, I would redraw my wheels and try to  make it look much better.
For week 3&4 I was to draw an optical illusion and I choose to draw a picture I seen online but made it my own still. It took me a while to draw it with adding details but I really enjoyed it. The color is what really made the picture pop out in have that illusion look. One thing that I missed up on was time management. If I handled my timing better I believe I would have draw the black lines much better making it look real.
For week 5&6 I was to draw shading forms. I chose to draw a cube, cylinder, and sphere. I draw the the cube the best, I shaded it well and it looked good for my first time of shading. I could have done a lot better with the other two because with the cylinder the shading could have been much better and the sphere could have been draw better, more of a circle.
For week 7 I really enjoyed the way I draw this because the eye looked real and I added good detail to it with a lot of shading. I could have done better with shaping the eyeball better and making the pupil less dried out and bettering the lighting out in it.
For the last week, week 8&9  I have draw a mandala. This was different for me to draw because it's not really my style but this was a good start for me than overdoing it. I liked the design I chose, it is similar to the crazy big one but doesn't have a lot of detail. If I could do this project over I would color much better and have a different color selection, I think this is what really made this project not look so good.

Art Presentation - End of Quarter

Posted by Caroline Pitone in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 12:26 pm

This quarter, I did many different art pieces for each individual assignment. We focused on things from shading, to mainly just color. While doing my pieces this quarter, I hit some hard bumps along the way. Most assignments were meant to be very accurate and intricate. There were not many assignments that were very free hand, which was very challenging. I tried to approach each assignment with a positive outlook on everything and do each one in a creative manner. The outcome for each assignment was very different each time. Which is something I am not very used to. I used to have one way of how I wanted the pieces to be structured for each assignment that I did.

It was really fun to do new things that I have not previous done, for example the mandala assignment. I did not realize how hard it would be to create a mandala until I started attempting to draw one. A lot of things had to go into it when thinking about the shapes, lines, and colors. It was one of the more time consuming assignments. I think that one the most difficult assignments was the bicycle. Although it does not sound all that tricky to accomplish, it is. There are so many structural elements in a bike that made it very challenging to interpret onto a sheet of paper. It was the assignment I was the most unhappy about. Overall, I liked all of the assignments that I had to complete. I think that this quarters assignments were the most challenging compared to the other ones which was difficult but also really exciting. Even though it was tricky, it gave room to converse with others in the classroom who were having the same difficulties and problems.

Quarter 3 Reflection

Posted by Mary Lamb in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 12:43 pm

Quarter 3 Advanced Art Reflection

The first project we did this quarter was a large scale drawing of a bicycle. My bicycle was done with pencil on paper. It took awhile to get the proportions of the bike, but after that it was easy to shade. The drawing came out a little messier than I would have like, and I didn’t really enjoy drawing the bike because I find working in pencil frustrating.

The second project we did this quarter was the optical illusion. This was a favorite of mine. The materials I used were paper, markers, and colored pencils. I first sketched out the illusion in pencil, colored in alternating sections with black markers, and then colored in the remaining sections with all different colored pencils. I really like the effect that I got in the end.

The third project we did this quarter was shading practice. The materials used were pencil and paper. The first thing I did was draw shapes and split them into sections to indicate transitions in shading. Then I shaded, changing the strength I used to press down on the paper. I learned a lot about how weight affects color with this project, and I think it turned out.

The fourth project we did this quarter was the eye drawing. The materials used on the eye were pencil and paper. I sketched the eye from a photo of mine. I then shaded, paying close attention to value and texture. I had the most trouble getting the shine on the eye right, and I don’t think it looks quite right. Otherwise, I really do think it looks like my eye, and I’m proud of the end product.

The last project we did this quarter was the mandala, and it was my favorite by far. I really felt like I could be creative with it. The materials I used were pencil, pen, paper, and colored pencil. I first drew a circle, then sectioned it off like a pizza. Then I drew a smaller circle in the middle, and drew from there. After I drew with pencil, I traced with pen and colored in with colored pencils. I’m really proud of the end product.

My Q3 Art

Posted by Julia Furman in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 12:43 pm

If I learned anything in this quarter, it’s that drawing a bicycle is a lot harder than you might think. It’s not just about drawing the general shape of the bicycle, it’s about making sure all the parts are just right. I personally had the most trouble with drawing the breaks. Despite all that, I do believe my final bicycle drawing turned out pretty good. I gave my bike drawing the title, “La Bicicleta,” which means, “The Bicycle,” in Spanish, because I felt like it.

I also tried experimenting with shading. It was a little hard with a lead pencil and my tendency to press down on the paper, but I managed. The results of this can be seen in my shaded shapes and optical illusions. The key to creating a tunnel-like optical illusion like the ones I made is to master the shading. In order to create a realistic tunnel effect, you have to shade the top part lighter and the bottom part darker. I learned this when creating the square tunnel, and later practiced it in the rainbow circle tunnel.

For this quarter, I decided to try out a new strategy. Instead of making a rough copy in my sketchbook and a final copy later, I decided to make more than one version of the same picture to see if the second drawing would be an improved version of the first. True, I was basically doing the same thing, but I was showing the “rough draft” as well as the “final version.” I have noticed a definite difference between the two versions of one drawing. For example, I did not add any interesting details to my first mandala aside from the color because I wanted to get used to drawing a mandala first. In my second mandala, I decided to draw hearts and stars on the shapes. Also, my second eye looks more “open” than the first one. It is important to note that I did make multiple versions of the shaded shapes piece, but I was having technical difficulties and could only upload one.

Quarter 3 Art Work

Posted by Mia Concepcion in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 12:29 pm

This quarter for art class I created a bike drawing, an optical illusion drawing, a shading forms drawing, an eye drawing, and an original mandala. In order to make some of these art pieces, I gained inspiration through my favorite colors and even from my culture. For the bike drawing, I used pencil and was inspired by my own bike that I ride, and drew a version of this. For the optical illusion drawing, I used colors that were vibrant and patterns that were graphic, to enhance the illusion aspect of the art piece. For the shaded forms drawing, I followed the instructions and practiced heavy and light shading, as well as all the variations of shading in between. For the eye drawing, I demonstrated more shading skills, such as the different weights that can be seen with thick and thin lead strokes. For the mandala, I was inspired by my Puerto Rican heritage and created an original design that had tropical themes, floral hints, and was very colorful overall.

Although I enjoyed using markers and colored pencils more, this quarter I mainly used pencils for sketching on the majority of the pieces. A technique I displayed while using the pencils was blending, by shading the darker, thicker lead with the lighter, thinner lead. I learned through the bike drawing, shading forms drawing, and eye drawing that shading is difficult and can be messy if it is not done precisely. During this quarter I used pencils, colored pencils, markers, erasers, printer paper, and large thick paper to create my art pieces. The pencils, colored pencils, and markers were used this quarter as my art mediums. I utilized my studio time throughout the quarter by spending each art period completing the assignments that were due for that week. I even got a head start on some of the future deadlines because I worked hard during art class, and went home with no assignments to finish. Overall, this quarter included a lot art assignments that allowed me to practice my shading skills, and also strengthen my art skills as a whole.

Q3 Final Project

Posted by Leah Bradstreet in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 12:16 pm

This quarter, I mainly worked on pieces that I had to sketch onto paper, centered around drawings of objects. My sources were usually either myself our my past experiences, belongings, and research. Symmetry was really important during this quarter as well as precision and exactness. I prefered to use a ruler and pencil first before using any color or pen. Many of my works had to be retraced with a pen or darker weight in order to show up well. These past few weeks, one thing I have learned is how to draw a mandala, which I had only colored in coloring books previously. This process, like many others this quarter, also required a ruler to measure the lines and keep them straight and even. Most of my studio time was spent working on these assignments because it was not often that I worked on them outside of school. It took me two work days in school and two outside to fully color in the optical illusion artwork I did in weeks 3 and 4. The hardest part about these works was the precision that went into them, but I believe that good quality time spent working there resulted in better art.
