Q2- Relationship Questions and Answers ft. Freshman

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 9:18 am

This project required me to take a topic and ask students about it. I asked the upperclassman at Science Leadership Academy the questions that I should ask the freshman at Science Leadership Academy. Once I found out what questions I wanted to ask, I asked 6 different freshmen for all four of the videos and one senior for one of the videos. I filmed this video in the same space so that the background in this video is constant. Also, the videos have the same overall flow. Below is a list of the questions I used with a link to the post that contains the videos.

Questions:

1.     How do you think women should be treated in a relationship?

2.     What would you do if someone hit you/ How do you feel about being hit?

3.     What are your views on sex?

4.     How do you feel about relationships in High school?

Q2- Internet Sculpture

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 9:00 am

This Project required me to take a photo from the Internet and try to recreate it but keep a certain aspect about it. This picture, the first picture below this post, shows a girl standing in front of birds on a clothesline attached using clothespins. The picture below is a recreation of the picture above. The aspect of the picture that remains the same is that the birds are secured on the clothesline using a Clothespin. Also, my recreation still has a vintage and rustic feel to it. The color of the birds is the true color in this as it is in the picture that I got from the Internet.  However, I did take out the person standing in the picture that I got from the Internet. I wanted the birds to really stand out.

The remaking of the picture from the internet took a lot of time. First, I dyed clothespins different colors and let it dry over night. Then, I cut square sheets of different color construction paper and made origami swans. Next, I used hemp rope as a Clothesline and tied it to the tree in my front yard. Then, I tied hemp rope around the neck of the origami swans. Then, I attached the swans to the tree using the dyed clothespins.  Overall, this project was a great learning experience.

Q2-Stop Motions

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 9:00 am

The first three projects for the quarter were stop motions. A stop motion is basically when you take pictures to make a video. You can do this by taking pictures of things in progress.
With my first two stop motions I focused on the things that we do with our hands. The first things that came to mind was food and water. Therefore, I took one picture at the beginning and moved my hand 2 centimeters closer to the Reese's™ cup like I was trying to eat and took a picture. I keep doing this every two centimeters until I took a bite of  the Reese's™ cup. Another part of this stop motion was my friend drinking a bottle of water. The same concept of taking the pictures that was applied to me biting the Reese's™ cup was applied to her reaching for her water bottle and drink it. After taking all those picture i uploaded all of them from my camera to iMovie. I Then, make each picture fit the screen and take up only .2 seconds of the video. This was able to make it so that it would look as if it was a video playing. Sadly this video cannot be uploaded. However, I uploded the video to my blogger account. Here is the post.
With my third stop motion I took the project a step further by making everyone who agreed to help do a dance. The dance I chose for them to learn was the robot. It was simple and I knew the perfect song that I would play in the background of the video. The same concept used to make the last stop motions was applied to this one. The only thing different was that I edited the video to make it seem like it was more of a music video or a trailer for a song. The song playing in the background is "D.A.N.C.E." by Justice. The video is shown beneath this post.
The things that i learned from doing this project are that it is important to keep the same frame or dimensions of the picture to make it seem like the video has more of a flow. I problem that I had while making this project is that you have to take many pictures for the video to be long. Within the second video, I took 140 pictures at it is less than a minute long. Overall, I had a good time doing this project.

Quarter 1 reflections music

Posted by Basheer Lewis in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, November 11, 2011 at 9:45 pm

This quarter I made a collection of songs on piano. To do this I spent half the quarter teaching myself the piano, after that I begin to  cover different songs to help pick out the opening to the piece. Although I did record guitar for the songs as well in the end I thought the piano could stand by itself in this case.Doing this kind of project was very difficult and used up a lot of time, since I am a beginner at the piano. Also I used some studio time I had just to get it right, and add a great sound to it all.Overall I enjoyed the project I would like to do it again picking harder song to cover, and begin creating more of my own pieces to put in the song.

Figure Drawing & Clear Object Drawing

In my experience I had a very hard time comprehending how to draw the person, when we were doing our figure drawing. There were many times when I did want to stop, give up and be done, but since Ms. Hull doesn't let us give up, that wasn't an option. I think in the end i did have a good out come, I do think I could have made it better though. That applies to everything though. This was one of the harder things I've ever had to do in any art class. That was because I was completely out of my comfort zone, I hate drawing people. I am proud of what I accomplished though. None of our drawings looked exactly, but after a while I understood that everyone has a different perspective, so there really is no "Correct" way for your project to end. So though I don't think it's perfect, I'm proud of what I was able to accomplish, because it was much more than I ever saw myself doing.

With the Clear Object Drawing I was scared before we started, because I've never drawn anything I could see through before. So that was something new, and clearly I did finish it, but I feel like there was a point in the middle of the process where I would have liked to stop and be done. Not because i was tired of the drawing, it just felt finished to me. I do like what I ended up with though, I think I did eventually get the essence of the glass. The video we watched in our art class really did help though, before that I had no idea how to even start drawing the cup. It really gave you the essence of how to get all the curves, and the lighting and how that traveled through the glass. So in the end, I like my outcome, and am glad I learned from the experience.

Marquis Simmons Drawings

Posted by Marquis Simmons in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 1:51 pm

This quarter I drew two pictures, the see-through glass drawing and the full body drawing.

Glass Drawing:
For the glass drawing, I used charcoal and an eraser. The charcoal was used to shade the background and draw the actual glass. Then I used an eraser to create the reflection of the light off of the glass. The hardest part of this drawing was making sure the reflection of the light looked right and in the correct perspective of the glass. I didn't want to make the light look too unreal, but I also didn't want to not have enough of the light because it would have taken away from the 3-D aspect of the picture.

Full Body Drawing:
The full body drawing was the hardest out of the two drawings I did. Going into the drawing I thought it would be easy. I started off by outlining the model's body from my perspective of her. Then I tried to get into detail by adding little things to the picture. It was hard to try to copy her exactly and to keep certain parts of her body in proportion to the rest of it. If I had more time, I would have probably gone more into the details of her face and clothing; adding shade would have given the picture a more realistic aspect.

Art Within Bodies

Posted by Dejah Harley in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 1:47 pm

This project required me to take photos of five different people. These photos were taken in the same position and around the same place. By doing this, I ensured that there was no difference between the pictures that would drastically affect the difference in body structure. All of the pictures were in taken in a natural and relaxed position. After taking all those pictures, I went into Photoshop and cut the photos in fourths. The fourths consisted of head, shoulders to waist, waist to ankle, and ankle to end of shoe. My intentions were to put a persons head on top of another persons shoulders on top of another persons legs with someone else’s feet. However, I kept the heads next to each other at the top of the page, and spread the rest of the parts of the people throughout the rest of this page.

Within this project, I focused on what I wanted to express through my art. I wanted to convey the different parts of people and how they can be looked at separately and more in depth. I wanted to show why certain parts of the body are a certain way on certain people. The final project conveys how people are meant to have certain features about themselves. If they are not on their own bodies than they should just be in space.

What amazing projects. These drawings had turned out better than I thought. Drawing makes me see the world as a completely different place. I like to draw and enhance my learning as I believe drawing is a relaxing, calming and entertaining.

We started out our life size drawing by sketching out a rough figure. The utensil we used was charcoal. The point of the project was to draw things to real life scale. By drawing to real life scale, it helped me learn that every detail is necessary. As you can see closely in the  fourth picture down, I had just sloped on the face the first time. When I finally realized that I was drawing what I wanted to see, and not what I really saw, I redrew overtop to show how I made the change. Now the face looks almost picture perfect. This drawing took four, one hour long class periods. A total of four hours. After grasping the concept of drawing what I see rather than what I want to see, I went back and touched things up such as shadow marks, wrinkles, hair, facial marks, body posture. After looking at my final product I feel proud. I feel as though I learned how to draw what I see. I think my best part was drawing the head. The part I can improve on is focusing on her lower body. I feel like I put more effort into the upper body.

Next, we drew the clear objects drawing. The object here was tricky. Again here, we used charcoal.  We basically had to draw shadows and glare from lights. I drew and erased, drew and erased, drew and erased over and over again. This was harder then the life size drawing as you cannot really actually see a clear object, but yet the elements that make it. We worked on this project for two, one hour class period. A total of two hours.

Artist statement _ Tyler Creighton

Posted by Tyler Creighton in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 9:33 pm

For this quarter we had to create a couple of projects. The first project that we did was still life drawn picture of a student model. This drawing took four classes , four hours to complete this drawing. We  also had to make a drawing of a clear glass object. It took the class about 3 hours to complete this drawing. Both the  drawling's had to look as real as possible. The  still life drawing  had the most detail out of the two drawings, the drawing started off with lines that was going to be body parts. Something I lacked in was putting all my effort into each drawings. In the still life drawing  i put a lot of  effort into drawling her upper body than the bottom. But for my glass drawing I believe I did very well but I do need to work more on the inside shading and the light hitting the glass in certain spots but overall I think I did very well.

In my glass drawling we had to make the glass look like it was sitting on the paper, as it the glass was in the paper, basically 3-D. We used charcoal for this project as our drawing utensil. Using it made it easier for shading and fading. When i started my drawling I realized it was more to a drawing then a shadow and a outline. This drawing helped me to realize being a artist is not easy it takes a lot of work and patience . This made me stronger in some sections. I started off by shading a the shape of my glass. Then i lightened the area where the light hit the glass. After that I darkened the outline of my object so I could shade it in. In the video we watched the artist next step was erasing and shading where the light sits in the object. Once i did that for the first hour I took the next two hours making this drawing look more 3-D. This drawing consisted of me shading the object, darkening the out line ,showing how the light hits each side of the glass and adds a shadow , these are all the qualities and high lights of my drawing to make this object look like real glass.

Still life drawling

For this assignment we had to draw a human model for four hours. Before beginning this drawling I had to visualize the size of the model and the size of the paper, and figure out how i would portion the drawling. I visualized my model dejah and put her on my paper. Most of my focus was on her upper part of her body and shading where the light hit her. My weakness of this project was being able to draw her legs, but overall i felt I  did a weak good job.
