Antonia Solar- Negative/Positive Space Cut Out

Posted by Antonia Solar in Art - Freshman · Hull · e1 Band on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 1:38 pm

What is negative space?
Negative space is the space around and between an object and is used usually to make an object stand out. In negative space, two different colours are used.

Explain how you found negative space in your cut out.
I found negative space in my cut out by imagining the opposite of my image in the colours. This is a sort of reflection of the image but at the same time its opposite. I looked at all the lines in my image and saw which ones combined with each other.

Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It helps an artist to see in negative space because then they can understand how the lines and colours work together. This can also help them to enhance an image by making the object in the image the centre of attention.

Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?
Yes, I think it does enhance drawings because of the contrast the two different colours opposing and figures reflecting creates.

A. Negative space is the space around and between the person, place, thing, or idea in the image. It does not include the actual subject of the picture.

B. I found the negative space of the bird by cutting around and between it. I didn't include the eyes or anything. The point was to find the space around and between it.

C. It helps an artist to see in negative space because it defines the boundaries of the subject and makes it easier to draw.

D. Looking in negative space does help because it shows the outline of the subject and makes it easier for the artist to see and draw. once the outline is straight, the artist can then go on to positive space.

Positive/Negative Space Cut Out

 A. Negative space is a vision in art where you use the absense of art to create art. For example, if you have a black background and white text, you are removing the black color to present the letters within.

B. I found the negative space by cutting out the objects on the template with a dull color and placing the cutouts onto a vibrant background.

C. Negative space give the artist and the viewer another lense to see the art in. The positive space is just as important as the negative. They are equal.

D. Negative space enhances art by creating two images in 1. Two perspectives. Components stand out better.

In art we had to do a project based around negative space. Negative space is not what you see that makes things up but the space around it and that is the negative space. For exmaple if you look at the house itself that is the positive space if you look around it that is the negative space.

In my cut out I had an owl that is when I had to look at the in between or not the physical aspect of the cut-out that is where i found the negative space.

I think negative space is important because negative space can make a artist give thier own interpretation or twist on how they want something to look or even just to not always stay simple.

I can see how seeing negative space can be a good thing because there isn't always things that can be seen first sight but it depends on the kind of artist you are

The way I found negative space in my picture is my using my artist eye. I looked at the image I had to cut out which was a tree. What I saw that the light blue sheet I wanted to make it the negative space. I am putting the dark blue sheet on top of it, which makes the blue negative and helps form a picture with the dark blue sheets.

I believe that it helps an artist to see negative space. Seeing negative space can bring out the image so the viewers can interpret the way of the image they chose to present. Negative space is important as positive space The artist wants to make sure that the background is not too big so the image in focus is not in focus and vise versa because if not followed the image will be deformed and will not be able to see what the actual image would of been.

I believe negative space in an image enhances the image, because you can see more detail in the image from the different contrasts. You can see two different ways with both the negative space and the positive space. The negative space will bring out the image and can help the viewer see the image.

1. Negative space is the space around and between objects in a drawing or picture. It is either a white object with a black background or a black object with a white background. There is no shading or seperating lines in negative space

2. I found negative space in my cutout by cutting out the paper given to me and placing half of it on the left side of the piece of paper and the rest on the right side of the paper to give an effect of negative space.

3. It helps an artist to see in negative space because it makes approaching the drawing easier, holds the design together, and can bring focus to a certain part of the drawing.

4. Seeing in negative space helps enhance the picture because the picture appears clearer in only two colors and balances out the elements in the drawing.

A. What is negative space? (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the space around the object in the drawing. For example, in the image above the image shows negative space. On the left side of the image, the color brown represents the negative space around the tree.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

I was able to find negative space in my cut out because at my old school, we did a similar activity to this. To be specific, the template given was an image of half of a tree and the object is the tree so which means that the rest of the space are the negative space. Also, on the template there are two different color and one is darker than the other. The one that is darker is positive space while the lighter color is negative space.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It help an artist to see in negative space because it balances the boundaries of positive and negative space. It also helps the artist have a better understanding of the drawing.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Seeing in negative space does enhance drawings because it brings out the object of the drawing or the focus of the drawing. It also balances out the elements in the drawing.

Negative/Positive Space cutout - Matthew Nguyen

My Negative space cutout of an image of a tree. The back sheet of paper is pink, while the blue is cut out and glued onto the piece of paper
My Negative space cutout of an image of a tree. The back sheet of paper is pink, while the blue is cut out and glued onto the piece of paper

Negative Space in layman's terms is what is in the background of an image.  Negative space is generally what isn’t what needs to be seen in an image, while the positive space is all that does need to be seen.  More simply put, positive space tends to be closer while negative space tends to be further back. When negative and positive space are drawn as only single colors rather than the range of colors or with outlines, it appears to be as if it is a silhouette of the image.

In the cutout, I found the negative space to be what is not the tree and that on the drawing was what was already white, and the positive space was in grey.  However, that only gave me defines between negative and positive space. To actually see what is negative and positive space, it took looking at the image and seeing “aha!” this is a tree and this figure is the positive space, so thus the rest must be negative space.

It helps an artist to see in negative and as it shows them what to focus on and what parts are more important in an image.  It allows them to split up and comprehend the image based on certain figures. Seeing in negative space ultimately enhances drawings as it gives a more realistic effect to drawings as it allows people to contrast between background and foreground and see what is supposed to be seen in an image.

Negative space is the space that is around the art piece that can either bring out the art piece or bring out the background. Negative space can help form two "figures" depending on how the art it. The foreground might be in white, while the background is black and it is just up to interpretation on how see the artwork.

The way I found negative space in my picture is my using my artist eye. I looked at the image I had to cut out and saw that the blue sheet is the negative space. I am putting the pink sheet on top of it, and that makes the blue negative and helps form a picture with the pink sheets.

I think that it helps for an artist to see negative space, because seeing negative space can bring out the image. Negative space is just as important as positive space and the artist needs to know. The artist wants to make sure that background is not too big so the image in focus is not in focus. If there is not enough background, it will make the picture look busy and maybe that is not what the artist needs or wants.

I think seeing negative space in an image does enhance the image, because you can see more. You can see two different stories with both the negative space and the positive space. The negative space will also bring out the image and can help the viewer see the image even better and more clear.
