Gabriella Torres Capstone

Posted by Gabriella Torres in Capstone · Sessa/Spry · Wed on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at 11:16 am

For my capstone, I wanted to create a project that displayed a side of myself that is out of the box and shows creativity. while also collaborating with people within the SLA community, from other students to also Alumni who you will see are featured in my project. I was able to create a line of hoodies a mock brand of ideas that I wanted to bring to life. The brand name is “Uncovered”. The meaning behind this is to consider the ideas of which I pushed aside and had finally felt was the right time to express. To express the ideas of who I am where everything started and different ideas of myself portrayed within each design. I was able to show a side of myself people don’t regularly see. I learned how to manage within a timely manner. While in the process of acknowledging the process of how to outsource and use it beneficially, allowed me to create my line without trying to break my pockets. I was able to work on this clothing line by brainstorming with a former SLA student who is a graphic designer. This allowed me to bring my creations to life while allowing them to display their artistic work. With that being said it also began to give me exposure to being able to be in charge of planning out an entire photoshoot. Being able to be a director and display work that may be used in the future.

She Thought She Was Slick

I thought that they could be trusted but it seems like they're not trustworthy.

What are they serving today? Hm…

I’ll have a salad and ummm a water, please.

[Dials lunch number]

Why is he trying to talk to me now?

I've been what! I'm the most faithful chick out here, the fuck you talking about?

“Yea I was at the party”

“Nothing happened between me and Ethan”

“I was just talking to her this morning”

“That can’t be true shes my best friend, I haven't done nothing to her that would get to the point of her saying any of this!”

“How can you believe any of this….. I don’t care if she told you. If I'm telling you that I had never done any of this then why are you still believing it?

I can't believe she would ever say I cheated on my boyfriend.  What if this gets out and he finds out. I don’t remember doing any of this at the party. It can’t be true. I need to find Ethan like right now! [Picks up phone and dials]

Ethan, it’s me. What have you… But I….

It’s not true. You just want to start spreading lies about you and me because I told you to go be with one of your other hoes. That's why you had left in the first place.

I was at the party, yes. But I don’t remember anything. I mean you know I was drinking. Duh like who wasn’t drinking it was the first party of the school year, I wasn’t about to be sober and be with all my other drunk friends.

You can not control what I do. This is why we broke up that night because you feel as though I can’t do anything without you knowing my every move.

You have people believing that I cheated on you and that's why we aren’t together. When you were the one who cheated on me with fucking Maria. I gave you a second chance and Maria as well.

But since you both wanna be playing around spreading all these fucking rumors about me. Might as well just have the the real truth put out there.

No, don’t tell me to calm down!

Making me look like a whore out here because you're mad we aren´t together anymore.

Fuck you! Go be with Maria and all her damn issues cause she's not my problem anymore nor are you.

Maria get over here now! I know you can hear me don’t act like a bitch now!

Oh, so you wanna start talking about me cheating on my boyfriend that night. What about you sleeping with him while we were together! And I found out and didn’t tell anyone, absolutely no one. I forgave both of you.

Oh you didn’t want anyone finding out, did you? Well, Karmas a bitch isn’t it. That's what I thought so, go throt ya ass down the hallway and feel how I was feeling all day today. At least the shit you were spreading was a lie. But these all facts.

Lay a hand on me and you’re done cause all this anger will end you in a place where your pretty little face won’t be seen anymore.

[Starts laughing]

Come on touch me I dare you.

Cause now everybody knows you the whore of the school.

Yeo everyone watch ya mans cause Maria probably out here trynna get wit them.

Oh and that's right Ethan too he's in the same boat as you, both whores.

Go be together now cause you both won’t have anyone after this.

Duces honey have a nice life.

A Never Ending Battle//Gabriella Torres

Posted by Gabriella Torres in English 2 · Pahomov/Rhymer · D Band on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 1:43 pm

“What’s going on here?”

Everyone’s silent, looking around trying to figure out what was going on.

“I don’t understand why he’s constantly trying to make himself seem that he can do more or just lie about what he doesn’t do.” The first thing that was projectiled out of my mouth when I was asked what was going on by his dad.

The room slowly dimming down and more and more people opening and closing the doors making more ruckus than before. While everyone trying to have a say, gliding their hands making movements to have a stronger opinion. “You guys need to chill out” Looking around wondering trying to figure out who exactly is speaking but, I can’t see. All i wanted to do was block out everyone and what they felt they needed to get across..

I was egure to get up and walk away. My mom pulled me aside and told me to calm down and to not speak to him. Since there is no point to argue with someone that feels the need to believe that getting likes on Instagram is more important then keeping your grades up and telling the truth about anything in general.

“I’m play varsity basketball next year for Northeast” all that was heard while we were all talking about school and how everyone was doing in their classes.

As soon as this was said I realized he had said just 10 minutes before that he had only had a spot for JV and wouldn’t be able to make varsity till sophomore year. But I let it blow off because I’m already used to my cousin feeling the need to put himself on higher peddle stool then where he actually is.

Our family on my mothers side is pretty close. Between all the cousins there are three of us that become the same age in the matter of three months. I turn 15 in March, my cousin Jayden turns 15 in April and Aliyah in May. He feels that he needs to make himself seem better in situations since out of the three of us Aliyah and I were already in highschool and were starting to feel the pressure of the work and the change in environment we were placed in.

He was still in the mentality of social media is everything. School’s a breeze when in reality he was still struggling but still was lying because he was getting all these comments and likes on his instagram posts. Let be honest real quick; all the comments were the same 3 people spamming his comments. So he truly had 3 fans. There's something about the world today that everything relies on how many lies or viewers you get on social media. Which is where his mindset lays at. It created a tension between us two. As soon as I had gone onto his live he had wanted to say anything so his fans could hear. Talking about how “I am not an athlete”, how he plays almost triple the amount of sports then I have. Hence the fact that he's only played 2 sports and I've played 5, but you know he makes it out to seem like he's better.

What really triggered everything while we were at the table sitting waiting for dinner to be done, was they way he continued to target me for no reason. Which made the intentions of him trying to bring me down clear, and I was not about to let him bring me down knowing he was lying to everyone.

Everytime I initially hear something that is for sure untrue, that comes out of his mouth, I realize that it isn’t worth my time saying anything to him because what’s the point of telling lies if it won’t get you anywhere. If, I know that I am doing what I need to do in the end and being true to myself I know I will get somewhere in the end. Lying gets you nowhere, especially when your trying to brag about something that has no effect on where it will get you later in life with social media.

My element is Germanium and the atomic number is 32. Germanium has been known as one of the useful elements known to be used for semiconductor industries. Germanium is used long during metals in compression pumps and fluorescent lamps.I first searched up compression pump levers which were very basic so I dug a little deeper and didn't go with something that is made from this element on a daily. From here, I decided to do a wide angle camera len that germanium is used in for the lens. I was able to   distinguish a way to show this by using negative and positive space. If I could print this a second time, I would like to try and experiment with mixed colors because I feel like it would of made the out lining pop more. I enjoyed the printing part because you were able to see the outcome of what you had created.

The Change for Catcalling--Gabriella Torres

Posted by Gabriella Torres in English 1 · Giknis · D Band on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 7:18 pm

All of my research from post #1 and #2 has impacted the way I have finally concluded my thoughts of catcalling. Both posts required my research for the impact of growing up in a society where catcalling effects any human in the world mainly women. Men feels as though it is appropriate to catcall any women they find flattering in their eyes. My first post was brought out to be just finding out basic information and the impact put on women from these comments made about their looks. Then for my second post it was my own personal research to see how true this actually is. Each of these posts had brought my attention that everyone at different age ranges faced a time where they had been verbally violated in a way where it made them feel self conscious about themself. If you would like to view my first post the link is here. For my second post the link is here

Currently in this time there are very little organizations that are brought together to end street harassment as a whole. In society they value other things more than the safety of humans in the world. Also there is a lot of work put into making any type of organization that their goal is to end something that has been going on for centuries so, it will be very difficult to get people to come together for a project that could have an impact or no impact at all. The organization that I had found was Hollaback or also known as Feminist Public Works is a global organization that is powered by people to end harassment in society. This organization goat is to develop innovative strategies that ensure a safe public environment where harassment is not involved. I feel as though this is the right track to be on in order to actually make some type of improvement for people to feel safe. Also they way that they encourage people to sign up and be apart of this movement to start up a group in their area.

For my agent of change I had decided to do a information presentation with interaction of the audience. My plan was to inform everyone about Street Harassment but also for them to see other peoples opinions about a subject that happens everyday and they either are targeted or are viewing it around them. My presentation consisted of background information about the topic but also questions that were asked to the audience to get them thinking and their initial reaction before watching a controversial CNN news broadcast about Catcalling creating the audience to have a lot to say which was my goal. My goal was to get the audience to be in a situation where they felt like the things being said was not correct but very ignorant because this initially shows how Street Harassment is. I did accomplish my goal of getting the audience to talk and give their own opinion on the ways would change things and how they feel of street harassment in general.

While doing this project over a couple months I at first felt kind of uncomfortable due to the subject being kind of harsh and you never know how people can take a topic like street harassment. After the first post I did feel pretty comfortable due to finding more information and the right way of approaching a topic like catcalling that occurs to people from the ages of 12 and on from men that can be from any age and without thinking how old the women could be. I learned that it is easier to talk to people that have witness these things and are more open minded about ideas then just some adults that don’t care or feel as though it is wrong for a topic like this to be brought up.There is alot to still be done in order for my change to actually be done but, this is such a topic where it is going to take years in order to get any movement in society to actually get any sense of understanding why catcalling is not a good thing at all.

Cut out Image//Gabriella Torres

Posted by Gabriella Torres in Art - Freshman · Hull · e1 Band on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 1:31 pm

The way I found negative space in my picture is my using my artist eye. I looked at the image I had to cut out which was a tree. What I saw that the light blue sheet I wanted to make it the negative space. I am putting the dark blue sheet on top of it, which makes the blue negative and helps form a picture with the dark blue sheets.

I believe that it helps an artist to see negative space. Seeing negative space can bring out the image so the viewers can interpret the way of the image they chose to present. Negative space is important as positive space The artist wants to make sure that the background is not too big so the image in focus is not in focus and vise versa because if not followed the image will be deformed and will not be able to see what the actual image would of been.

I believe negative space in an image enhances the image, because you can see more detail in the image from the different contrasts. You can see two different ways with both the negative space and the positive space. The negative space will bring out the image and can help the viewer see the image.

Catcalling In Society

Posted by Gabriella Torres in English 1 · Giknis · D Band on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 8:43 pm

All of my research from post #1 has impacted the way I have continued to think about catcalling. My research before was about how growing up is not as easy as it may seem, especially if you are a young woman. Men have grown up in this society where they feel the need to make comments about our bodies without thinking twice about it. As women we do not appreciate theses comments. Obviously some women feel as though they enjoy the attention and feel as though men are doing nothing wrong going ahead and commenting on their bodies. They don’t think about how some girls can be 12 with a well developed body that makes them perceive as a woman at least 18 years old. So men believe it is okay to make sexual comments towards them without thinking that they may be under the age of consent. This is when catcalling becomes such a thing that needs to be seen and made aware to the world. When doing this second post I had did my own observations by making women take a survey and tell me how they feel about Catcalling. If you would like to view my first post the link is here.

Since the last post I have taken the initiative to dig deeper into the stories I have found on the internet and see what stories I can get on my own. At first I found some credible sources from women writing about what had done to make awareness of catcalling and their personal experience. As Rachel Hosie had said,“For me, it has always been more than an annoyance. It’s shaped my experience in public space. It’s affected my confidence and comfort walking down the street. It’s silenced me ― I’ve never felt comfortable responding to catcalls, as much as I’d like to tell these men off.” When I seen this article it made me think back into my 1st post and realize the connection between both. Each of the articles I had forund had a way of saying they needed something to change but neither one of them had done anything. They had just said they wanted to do something but writing about it was their way of getting something done. In this tense though this time someone wrote about how they felt and also even made a way to bring awareness. Rachel had put sidewalk chalk in bins in NYC where she let women right different catcalls they had received so, women and men were able to see that first catcalling is not a right thing but also to show to the women that they aren’t alone.

This article made me realize that if one person feels as though this way then multiple people may also so, I created a survey with a couple multiple choice and short answer questions that would help me get information for my cause from different age groups to be able to see how they view catcalling. This did take a little longer then expected trying to get responses since not everyone feels comfortable talking about their experiences or giving up about 5 mins of their time responding to this survey. At the end I had received about 80 responses giving me more than enough stories and their personal opinion about catcalling to write about. At the end of everything the results were very shocking. After all the responses I was still left wondering if there is anything that can actually be done to change and get through men's heads that catcalling is not okay.

The first question of my survey was How old are you? This was to get a general idea of the age range I was retrieving from survey takers. Majority of the people that had took the survey were between the ages of 15-16 making them freshman or sophomores in high school. With some of the data you can also notice that I had some survey takers that were between the ages of 11-12 which opened my eyes as soon as I looked at the data because it shows how not just adults receive sexual comments made towards them. This also relates back to the article in Post 1 about the statistics showing kids between the ages of 11- 12 recieve comment from men of all ages because of the way child may look may seem as though they are older then they truly are.

This was the second question of my survey was Have you ever been sexually harassed from catcalling? This showed how 77.5 % out 80 people which is 62 people have been sexually harassed from catcalling. Which is pretty intense that only 18 other people were not. This is showing to me how it is more likely to be sexually harassed then not so if you ask more people it would be more of a chance that they say yes then no which is such an eye opener to myself and I hope to everyone else too.

Now here is my third and fourth question: At around what age did you first receive a sexual comment made from an unknown male? And describe a time where you were the victim of Catcalling. This is when information received changed the way things were seen. When you look at the  the graph is is showing about what age did each women receive their first catcall. Majority of the people said they received their first catcall between the ages of 11-16. These were the 3 top age range that had gotten any type of sexual comment made to them. Then their is personal experiences given by 37 of our survey takers. Each of them gave a personal story they felt they would share for this project. This was the exact part that made me say wow. How can so many people have so many experiences with catcalling that could of lead to so many more serious problems; mental issues, low self esteem, and much more.

While looking at these two answer charts that I received from my survey made me realize that majority of the women feel as though catcalling is not a good thing and they really do not know exactly what to do to stop this situation because of the comments making women feel unsafe around their surroundings but also make them feels as though they are objects and not human beings and this is something that has been going on for so long that they feel as though that nothing that maybe thought of will change the mindset of a man to stop from making these degrading comments to women.

When looking at all this information I received It made me realize how many women go through catcalling on a daily. Also some of their stories showing how rude men or if you may want to call them boys degrade women with harsh comments that they feel as though will do no harm. This all adds to my research because I was able to see this for myself and not get this information online where I wouldn’t know if some of these stories were false, but when i had read some of my survey takers experiences it showed me that this is something that needs to change even if it isn’t a immediate change something need to give.

At the end of this all I am still left wondering what I could do for my Agent of Change because there are so many things that I could do to bring awareness. I feel as though if i put something together I can make a short film having women speak about catcalling and post it and see where it leads from there. Obviously this is one idea I hope to think of something more thoroughly.

Catcalling----Hey Baby! I'M NOT YOUR BABY!!!

This is a sign about things men do to get women's attention when catcalling and how they feel about it.

                      https://www.theodysseyonline.com/catcalling-is-harassment

Growing up is not as easy as it may seem, especially if you are a young woman. We are in a society where men feel the need to make snarky comments about our bodies without thinking twice about it.  As women some of us develop at different ages. Some girls can be 12 with a well developed body that makes them perceive as a woman at least 18 years old. So men believe it is okay to make sexual comments towards them without thinking that they may be under the age of consent. While learning new things I want to have a clear understanding on the view of women being harassed in some way of catcalling. I know that there will be many stories that will be very harmless to the person but also stories that will seem extreme for a guy trying to get a woman's attention especially if you do not know what their intentions of where they are coming from. My goal of this project is to bring awareness to people around our community even the that catcalling is a product of harassment. Many people feel as though it is such a thing that makes people feel uncomfortable and threatened while walking down the street but, it's time we try and do something to stop men from doing outrageous things when it comes to trying and talking to a female.

I am very interested in this topic because catcalling is something you witness everyday. Someone is either staring you down or even making remarks that make you feel unsafe. For example Ashley Ross would take precautions “I’ve even gone to such lengths as wearing a sweater over my workout clothes every single time I step out the door, even midsummer, as my curves in Spandex seem to give men—of any age, race or neighborhood—the welcome invitation to comment on my body.” She would do this because she felt unsafe in her surroundings while she felt confident in her body but other people felt as though it was their opportunity to gawk over her body. I feel as though this is something to make aware to people because this affects the way women view themselves. This topic matters to me because I have experienced instances where I myself have been targeted by men between the ages of 15-25 stare me down or even scream out trying to get my attention. Which makes me feel threatened and even unsafe in my surroundings. I feel as though readers should know about this because it gives them information about what is occurring around the world if this personally hasn’t affected them because everyone may view catcalling different. Doree Lewark is someone who feels as though she is a fan of catcalling saying “When I know I’m looking good, I brazenly walk past a construction site, anticipating that whistle and “Hey, mama!” catcall. Works every time — my ego and I can’t fit through the door!” Now this makes you think about how many women feel this way. Do they really look for the attention or are they genuinely afraid when walking down the street in some spandex after going to the gym?

This is a significant issue in the world because it makes themselves feel as though that this is their fault because of their choice of clothing or even makeup they decide to wear that perceives them to be older than usual and maybe more appealing to older mean. This outrage of catcalling has gone out the roof, “a staggering 98% of women surveyed in 2008”, reported that they had experienced cat-calling and harassment, which is completely insane these number have stayed the same and it is now 2018. When thinking about it these acquisitions men are getting from making comments about any little thing they see on a woman's body are making them feel as though anyone will brush off their comments and go on with their day. In reality this doesn't work that way, there are many risks but the main risk of stranger harassment to mental health is its effect as a chronic stressor a stressor can be any environmental or external event  that causes stress to an individual, which becomes chronic when it is experienced on multiple occasions over time. The effects placed on anyone creates difficulties of actually feeling safe while even working or just walking out of their front door into their cars. It's insane. All of this research will help everyone see that they are not the only ones going through catcalling everyday and how it is not their fault at all but the thirsty men out there that feel as though it is their job to compliment a woman without realizing them feeling unsafe or even threatened.

These are the statistics of Street Harassment in the United States.

                                                     https://www.ilr.cornell.edu/news/street-harassment-statistics

All of my research has impacted the way I have started to think about catcalling. What I am truly wondering about is what if the tables were switched and women were making these comments. Would the men feel mentally and physically unsafe or will they just take everything as a complement and boost their confidence about themselves. Also what is going on to stop or bring awareness because when looking at the data there is hardly any current information from 2018 only from the span of 2008 to about 2015. What I hope to learn about while going on is how to make this problem significan at this very moment because of all the data being almost 10 years old when trying to find information about something that is occurring all over the world not just in the United States. I want to make this known again and show that no matter what peoples opinions are that they need to take a stand and make something happen.

Dunsinane™: The Official Trading Card Game By: Gabriella Torres & Andrew Semisch

Posted by Gabriella Torres in English 1 · Giknis · D Band on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 8:26 pm
Macbeth Card Stuff
For our creative project, Andrew and I worked on a card game of our own design featuring all of the characters of the play (unless we missed one or two of them). Included in the slideshow are all of the cards. Most cards, as you can see, have their own signature ability that isn’t shared with any other card. These abilities are inspired by what that character does in the play. For example, our Macbeth card can’t be destroyed by any other card except Macduff since, in the play, Macduff is the only person who can kill him. Aside from all the characters, there are cards related to themes or important phrases/moments in the book. For example there is the “Milk of Human Kindness” card, which is a callback to when Lady Macbeth told Macbeth that he was too full of said, which becomes a recurring idea in the play. The aim of the game is to defeat your enemy using your cards against theirs and dethrone them. The rules are described in the attached pdf.

Remix of All About Me Slide

Tech project (1)

I had learned a lot from the critiques I was given during the presentation. I had taken everything in consideration since I had certain things that could've been better. One of the critiques was to fix all the tangents on the slide. I had tried my best to fix. Another critique was to move the two images to the right over more so it didn't interfere with any of the text. I learned that if you want to catch someone's eye with a slide you have to make sure there isn't anything that will annoy or make them think what your slide is actually about.
I made these changes to my slide because I knew that it would make it better then it was before since it was our first time trying this out. The changes I made were to insure that everyone wasn't questioning why something was placed a certain way or that it was annoying them because of what ever reason they have. Also to make the slide as short as possible without it being way too much for people to look at.
The research actually helped me a little bit because I had already an idea of how I wanted kmy slide. I wanted to make sure I should who I actually was an athlete. So while researching I was basically trying to find pictures that were simple enough but also popped. Some of the sources I used was the Zen website with the Ikea billboard. This actually gave me an idea to use colors that were bright and mixed well so someone would be able to see if from afar. Which in the long run actually was a success. This is my slide hope you enjoy.

This is Me!

Why I had made my slide look the way it does is because it expresses the way I describe myself. I would describe myself as an athlete. So when you look at my slide it represents the certain sports I am the most proud of being able to be apart of. In  the center I had included one of my favorite quotes that represents me being a athlete. There was a couple things that influenced me while making my decisions on the slide. One of them was making sure I had only one point and not multiple things on the slide that would take me forever to explain. Another thing was the Size of the text and where the quote was positioned which was right in the center. I had placed it there because it would be the center of attention. My focus on my whole slide would be around that one quote. One of the major things that influenced my decision makings was the positions of my pictures used. The bigger the image the more it brings the attention which, was the dancer that bled of the page to show how that was the second biggest thing to look at on the slide. Then the other images are apart of my identity of myself but aren’t as valued. This is why I made my slide the way it looks.

My Home Network - Gia Torres

Posted by Gabriella Torres in Technology - Freshman · Hull · e2 Band on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 2:52 pm

My Local Area Network basically looks like a bunch of electronics connected to my internet connection. We are a family where basically everyone has their own personally items. So, everything is connected to the internet 24/7 which, does slow things down. Plus we all have smart tvs and game consoles that sit there and we don’t really use but they are automatically connected taking space. My network is Comcast which in my opinion is kind of slow. But, It also could be everything that is connected to the network.

I actually learned a lot about networks. Especially when we were creating the chart since I had not realized how much was actually on our network alone so, it made me rethink why our network is slow sometimes. Also learning a lot about how network providers trick you into believing you have fast internet connection when they could actually be slowing it down. I was really shocked about how things actually interfere when you add more and more things onto a network.

I would tell them to look at what you are getting into before you chose your provider. Since a lot of providers could trick you into thinking you are getting the fastest service. Also make sure you chose wisely what you want on your network since everything basically gets saved onto your network creating tracks. This is basically what I want other people to know so they are able to get what they actually need to have good service.
