Wildlife Preservation Agent of Change #3

Posted by Zachary Sanders in English 1 · Giknis · D Band on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 11:03 pm
For my final Agent of Change I actually was not able to do it because of difficulties with time and planning better than what I did. But for what I did do was head to a national wildlife center and explore their area and the animals. After that I planned to find a documentary to show to either to my stream or to my advisory. Sadly that was not able to happen but if I were to do this project again I would make sure to plan my time better and be more productive.

Printmaking- Arsenic

Art- Printmaking Picture
My element for this project was Arsenic. It's name on the periodic table is As and the atomic number is 33. It's compounds were mined up by early Chinese, Greek, and Egyptian civilizations. A man named Albertus Magnus was even able to make the element by heating soap with orpiment.
I got the idea for my project by finding out what my element is and does. Since my element was a type of poison the first thing that came to my mind was death, and for the poison I had an idea of a somewhat toxic substance. So with that knowledge in mind I was able to create a skull with toxic coming out from it being represented by the gas and the leaking of the eyes.
If I could do this project again I would add more detail to my picture. While I did like what I had and was proud of it, I feel like there could have been more to do with it. The part of the project I enjoyed the most was putting the color onto the paper with the rollers. I just liked getting to get a little messy with paint and having to do it again multiple times.

Negative Space

Untitled document (1)
1. Negative space is the space between, around, and within an object. For example, the picture above is that of a blue bird, and the negative space of it is all the black around it. The way the two work together allows people to see the different viewpoints of pictures

2. I found negative space in my picture by looking at two colors in the bird. From there I was able to cut out all of one color on both sides of the paper. So if you were to fill in either side with it's missing color it would like the same as it did before

3. It helps on artist to see in negative space because it allows them to the many different viewpoint of any drawing. In doing so it can also make a picture look better or look more appealing

4. I would say that negative space does enhance drawings because it can show parts of drawings that may not have been before i it were to stay the same

Into The Wilds

Posted by Zachary Sanders in English 1 · Giknis · D Band on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 10:04 pm

In my first blog post about wildlife preservation I talked about all of the places out there that helped endangered animals. So for to further expand my knowledge and research I visited the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. I did a field observation of half of the trail and was able to spot some animals out and about. Since I went in the morning there was not much to see because most animals came out at night but what I did find was enough for what I needed.

The data I gathered was abe to help in my original research because I was able to see how much of an issue wildlife preservation is. While at the refuge I saw birds, swans, and even some horses. The animals themselves aren’t constantly cared for like you would see at a zoo but the ones here just live like they would in the wild but without having to worry about the dangers of being killed. So comparing this to what I heard about all of the endangered animals has really opened my eyes more as to how bad they have it.

Something I still have questions about is how are the rescued endangered animals cared for. Since I know that there are ones out there that find help they need and are going extinct for different reasons, I wonder how they are cared for. Another question I have which is revolved around this is how do the animals in the wildlife get there food. If all animals there are to be protected then how can they at least surrive food wise. For example if there was an eagle that ate squirrels in the wildlife, but that squirrel was also there for protection then how does it work out so that both can survive?

While at the wildlife center there are some things that I observed and noticed. One of those things were that the other people there were mostly adults and more importantly with there own pets. There were a few kids I noticed there but they were also with parents. But one of the adults I noticed there was actually there to take pictures just like me, except he seemed a lot more professional. He had an actual camera and possible a notepad with him. If I could have stayed longer i would have asked him if he came to this place daily or what other places he went to. Looking back on what I did there only made me realize what more I could have done.

To end it all off I think that my field observation went well. In the future I would have liked to find more animals since was a little bit harder to do during the morning and also maybe ask around from other people on what they have seen here.

Wildlife Preservation

In Africa, African Wild Dogs used to range to 500,000 in 39 countries. But now because of issues like roadkill and destroying habitats, there are only thought to be about 6,600 left. Seeing that big of a change in the world is quite upsetting, especially when there are tons of other endangered animals out there. Just from seeing those few sentences I can tell that there are some people who would already like to read more into this topic and how much of an impact this has in the world.

Personally I feel connected to this topic because I love animals. I know it seems like such a basic thing to say but it’s really is true. I haven’t had any real pets besides from a turtle if that counts but if or whenever I see a pet in public I take any chance I can to pet them and be all over them. I think this topic on endangered animals and protecting their habitats is something others should know because besides from them being needed for loving and caring for, but as a source of inspiration. From what I heard from The Wildlife Conservation, protecting animals and their habitats lets us protect the planet as a whole. There are so many things that we can still learn about them. Plus, they haven't done anything to us, there just species living on the Earth same as us. So there's no reason to hurt the space they live in in any way, shape, or form.

Now, for those wondering what some of the issues going around are, there's a lot. But I picked out some of the worst ones I saw. Starting with small wild cats very little is known about them but that's what makes it much of a problem. Of all the unique different types of animals out there if you can’t say much for just a simple cat then there's the problem right there. But from what was gathered these small cats are being threatened by loss of habitats, killing, and conflicts with humans, livestock and domestic animals. They can be found in parts of South America, Asia, and Europe.

Moving onto another animal that is in need of help is the Ethiopian Wolf. These wolves are one of the rarest and most endangered canid in the world so that on it’s own speaks for itself. But ironically another thing that stops the wolves from thriving is the growth of the human population. With more and more humans in the Ethiopian highlands it forces the wolves out only into domestic dogs that carry diseases. As a result of these diseases three out of four of the wolves die. Now with only 500 left to remain in the wilds of Ethiopian people want to do anything they can to find a place for these animals and to get them treated for their diseases.

In conclusion I think that people should take the time to look around and start seeing issues in life that they should be more aware of. From all the research I was able to do I feel like it has really changed my view on how animals have to struggle to survive. If there was anything I could do in order to help out in any way I would do it. I think I would start with donating money to the Wildlife Conservation Network just to any animal I can. As I dig more into this matter I don’t really know what I hope to find but whatever I do find I'll be sure to have all the info down.

For me and Matthew's creative project we decided to make a Macbeth themed board game. The game itself, named Conquest, has a decent amount if rules but can be understood if read properly.  Having done research on the time period, we decided to name it Conquest due to the Norman conquest happening at this approximate time.  The goal of the game to be the last castle standing by wiping out the three other enemy castles in a war between the alliances of Scotland, lead by Macbeth, England, lead by Edward, Norway, lead by Macdonwald, and Fife, lead by Macduff.  We chose a war scenario because the play opens and closes with a war, first between Norway and Scotland, then between Scotland and England.  We chose those names for the alliances because for England and Scotland, they were at war at the end, while at the beginning, it was with Norway.  For Fife, that alliance was against Norway alongside Scotland at first, while later they were with England and against Scotland, so they do play a major role in the play.

On the physical game board itself, there are hexagonal spaces, a nod to early RTS (Real Time Strategy) games that would take place in the middle age.  There is a space for Prophecy cards, which are named so because of the prophecies that Macbeth and Banquo are given during the play.  Thusly, they contain some shakespearean language along with some motifs that are within the play, two of them being the supernatural and blood.  Another theme that is included is the number 3, which is involved multiple times during gameplay, with an example being the number of troops required to gain a prophecy card. At four opposing points on the board are the alliance castles, which are actually indicated by the flag of the Alliance, along with the name of it.  A castle drawing or picture was dropped due to time concerns.  Other pieces that are used are the soldier pieces, which there are ten of them for each player.

Zachary Sanders- Slide Remix

Tech Project_ My Life Slide 2 (1)
After presenting my project to my group members and having to do this again, the thing I was able to learn from my slide overall was falling and getting back up. Now I may not be a master at design and I know that i'm nowhere near it but it's from the mistakes that I make in life that I am able to improve on. No matter what it is that you're doing no one is perfect. Sometimes you have to accept defeat in order to grow.
There were a lot of things that lacked and could have been taken out in my first copy of the slide and i'm glad that I was able to improve those things on this one. In my first slide I had tons of pictures which was the thing I was trying to focus on in my slide but with the amount of pictures I had made it hard to focus on one thing. But in this one I changed that idea around completely. Instead of a bunch of photos I decided to make the background the center of attention with a quote on the side so that it was easier to just read the quote and admire the background. I also added the little pixel figures so I could spice it up a bit with something new.
The research I did helped create a better slide because from it I was able to see new ways I could improve and also ways that appealed to me. For example the quote because I always liked reading quotes and seeing them makes things look better to me. I did not use any sources but I did use google images in order to find the right image for my background. Finding them didn't take that long but making sure that the image wasn't too big or was not transparent took a while. But overall I am happy with what I created.

Zachary Sanders- Life Slide

Posted by Zachary Sanders in Technology - Freshman · Hull · e2 Band on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 10:36 am
In my slide I decided to base it on something that I love to do: Play video games. I don't remember what age I got into video games but I think the first type of hand held game I had or got handed down to me was a Game Boy from my mom. And from there I got a Game Boy Pocket, my first Nintendo DSi, a Wii, a Nintendo 3DS XL, an Xbox One, and finally another Nintendo 3DS XL since my second one broke along with the first one. Currently most games I play are FPS, platformers, and RPGS. FPS aka first person shooter are games where you, well, shoot things. For example the games Destiny and Destiny two that I have in my slides that are one of my favorite games. The next which is a platformer are pretty basic parkour type of games like Mario. Last, RPGS are popular games like Skyrim or for the older people out there a popular one like Dungeons and Dragons which isn't actually a video game but still goes along the terms of an RPG. Now explaining everything else in my slide like the procrastination and lazy things like the panda is pretty simple. It’s really just that, well, i'm a teen and there are times when teens are lazy and just don't want to do which is basically what I am expressing. But with all that in mind this is my slide.

Home Network- Zachary Sanders

Posted by Zachary Sanders in Technology - Freshman · Hull · e2 Band on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 2:28 pm
I have two different wifi names and one is FiOS-F7B1M. The other is FiOS-F7B1M-5G. For an only child there are actually a lot of things connected to my router in my house, some of the things hooked up to my router are me, my mom's, and my grandmother's phone. I also have a Xbox One, Wii, and Wii U that are all hooked up to my router in order for me to play certain games. The rest of the things are basic things like a TV, computer, and such.

Something that I found cool and interesting while doing this assignment was that all the wifi comes from the router itself, not just some imaginary source that I thought was just floating around the world when I was a little kid

If you have your own Home Network something I would suggest is NEVER telling anyone your password. Cause if your do, that could start major problems with random people joining onto your wifi without you knowing.
