Inserted Scene
(The Road 66) They came to an old iron bridge in the woods where the vanished road had crossed an all but vanished stream. He was starting to cough and he’d hardly the breath to do it with. He dropped down out of the roadway and into the woods. He turned and stood gasping, trying to listen. He heard nothing. They were but ten minutes from the roadrats. Maybe less. Looming trees around them, leafskinned and twisted. Barren branches like tendrils. Scorched, scaly bark. They moved through the carcass of the woods and the man coughed and coughed and coughed and looked behind him frequently but they werent there. Still no time to catch their breath as they hurried through the shadowy grove until the woods were suddenly blazing bright and tormented with loud snaps.
The man yanked the boy’s arm and pulled him away. An ablaze tree fell in front of them and thundered. In every direction trees crashing down. Some alight with flame. This way! He held the boy’s hand tight and darted them out of the way of falling tree. A growl erupted from the ground where tree connected. They ran but the boy was dragging. Papa! The man coughing and weak and exhausted but somehow with the energy to maneuver around the falling trees. One nearly hit the boy but the man snatched him out of the way. Trees still crashing. Why are they falling Papa? They had nowhere else to go. They continued around the trees through the howls and the ripping and the thuds until it was finally quiet.
The man stopped and looked back at the carnage. Hulking trunks splayed across the ground. Smoke oozing into the gray sky. The man held the boy’s hand. The boy was silent. The man pushed forward. He staggered on another half mile or so and finally dropped to his knees and put the boy down in the ashes and leaves. He wiped the blood from his face and held him. It’s okay. It’s okay.
Rationale — An explanation of the decisions made in the inserted scene
The essential theme that shaped and created my cut scene of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road was the theme of changed purposes in the new world. What was not dangerous before have become threats, and threats are everywhere. What was devalued or taken for granted before have become vital and necessities. I wanted a scene that revolved around an example of this, which is why I added a scene in which they are in the woods and trees fall around around them. This connects to this idea of changed purposes by having the man and the boy in a dangerous situation where the danger is trees, something that in the old world was innocuous and not dangerous, even were symbols of life and peace, and have become threats in this new world. My scene serves to foreshadow and reflect all the parts throughout the book that have or have to do with changed purposes and the transfer from the pre-apocalyptic world to the post-apocalyptic world by having it revolve around this theme.
My choice of placement has to do with the characterization and character development that takes place. I wanted to develop the way in which these characters behave in the face of immediate danger — how they act under impulses and under adrenaline. They are always at risk as long as they are on their journey but I wanted to develop this side of their characters in an extreme situation. This is why I chose to insert this scene at the bottom of page 66, which is moments after they escaped the roadrats: they are already in the woods, they are early enough into the journey to not be on or near the brink, and having just escaped the claws of danger adds to the intensity of the situation. Since these are the driving forces of the scene, the themes of fear and survival were also addressed, as they act out of fear and desire to survive under the pressure of this danger.
The motifs of monstrosity and predators are some of my favorites from the book because they connect to the main question and theme of changed purposes and transfer from the old to the new world. Inanimate objects and elements of the landscape often have a monstrous description (serpentine river, warped trees like skeletons), which shows how the world has changed. It creates predators and danger where there weren’t any, or the potential and fear that there might be when they’re not, as they could be anywhere. As such my scene recurred this motif by deliberately describing the trees and the environment this way (tendrils of branches, the trees growling, etc). They have also just escaped real predators.Zack Hersh — Quarter 2 Art

"Digital Fortress" by Dan Brown
Digital Fortress — Dan Brown
Review by Zack Hersh
Snowden on steroids — Digital Fortress is an exciting and wild ride through the NSA and the controversial issues of privacy, but past the plotline, the writing falls short
“Who will guard the guards?” The premise of this book is interesting enough: the National Security Agency’s top code breaking machine, the massive and multimillion dollar TRANSLTR, encounters a code it cannot break, called Digital Fortress. It turns out that Digital Fortress is actually unbreakable encryption software that, if released to the public, would be able to encode any digital message or data, effectively protecting it from any unwelcome “snooping” done by say the NSA. This software was created by a former NSA employee, Ensei Tankado, who was outraged by what he thought to be corruption, injustice and abuse of power in the NSA. More specifically, their everyday intrusion into people’s private lives. At the threat of releasing this software to the world, which would cripple NSA intelligence and power devastatingly, and the fact that the code is already inside TRANSLTR, preventing the mighty machine from doing anything else until the code is broken, Digital Fortress essentially holds the NSA hostage.
Only the secret passkey can abort the code, and that is where Susan Fletcher, the main character, and her fiance David Becker come in. Susan is the NSA’s head cryptographer, or code maker and breaker, and is brought in to try to uncover the passkey in a race against time, before Tankado auctions it off to the highest bidder worldwide. At the same time, Becker is sent to Spain, where Tankado had just died of what appeared to be a heart attack, to try to find Tankado’s personal copy of the passkey, all while being persecuted by a mysterious and relentless assassin. For the sake of national intelligence, the passkey must be uncovered before it is too late.
By this point, it should be quite clear how interesting the plotline of the book is. It is twisted and dynamic, with many layers, sides, and surprising or big reveals. But the complex and captivating plot was basically all the book had going for it, and was the only thing that would keep readers. Past the story, the writing fell short. It was mostly hollow and not very sharp, only really descriptive of actions, meaning along the lines of “Then he did this. Then this person did this. Then this person did that”. Of what would be expected of a professional author, especially one as accomplished as Dan Brown, who has found success with other bestsellers like Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, his prose is of egregiously low level. Much of the story was written in a very disappointing way. Then again, this was his debut work. He has since had time to figure some of these issues out.
Each chapter, the story jumped around from different places and characters, which was not only somewhat distracting and introduced numerous additional, and sometimes unnecessary, characters and subplots, but also caused the book to read more like a screenplay than a novel. With the exception of the intricate and well developed plotline, the writing was not of the highest caliber. For example, at a highly climactic scene, when Becker is running from the assassin and encounters a dead end, Brown Writes, “And then it just stopped. [Paragraph] Like a freeway that ran out of funding, the path ended.” This poorly executed simile was just one example of many literary letdowns found within the book’s 500 pages, and took away so much from this moment in the story. Readers may find themselves thinking more about the writing they’re reading instead of becoming immersed in the story, which is a shame, because the plot itself is quite rich. As the plot thickened, the writing did become somewhat more readable and engrossing, however, this high point is the baseline of quality where most writers would be looking to as a starting point, not as a peak. Readers who can ignore and look past errors, questionable decisions, and little irritations may enjoy the book because of the captivating story it tells, but otherwise, Digital Fortress would mostly likely not be a worthwhile read. Readers could instead discover the plot through Sparknotes, or through a simple plot summary.

SLA takes a different approach to teaching History than most other schools in the city. At most schools the students are taught and forced to memorize meaningless facts and dates, then tested on their memorization capabilities and how well they know the facts. In my History class at SLA, however, we explored and discussed various topics, both historical and present day, through readings, videos, discussions, and other forms of media and communication, then applied those topics to modern day politics and events. We were then assessed, on application and knowledge, not on meaningless facts and dates, through engaging projects instead of tests. I leave the year thinking this: learning about historical and contemporary topics and ideas then applying them to present day, and learning through projects, is a much more engaging, enriching, and meaningful way to teach history than through irrelevant facts, dates, and tests. The best way to understand and learn history is through applicable ideas, not facts.
I feel that from this learning approach that SLA poses as a whole, I have taken away more from and learned more from this World History class than if I had been in a traditional World History class. So what I take away doesn’t have to do with the material and the topics, but rather with the way the material was presented and the learning style of the class and SLA as a whole.
Over the course of the year, we completed several projects on areas or topics where most classes or teachers would have given us a test. One such example is at the very beginning of the school year, our first unit was on the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline. We learned all about it, facts, stats, opinions, everything essentially. But at the end of the unit, instead of being tested on the material, we were assigned a project: to write three unique monologues that showed different sides to the story and how it would affect different characters and people. In one of my three monologues, which can be found here, I wrote from the perspective of a rural fisherman whose river was threatened by the pipeline. My character says, “Not only are they [Trans-Canada] not allowed to get away with this stupid and careless idea [Keystone XL Pipeline], but we most certainly will not relocate from generations of tradition so they can build their goddamn pipeline!”. However, in another monologue of a conservative senator about to address senate on the issue, my character says, “We are basically being given a freebie: no financial drawbacks with many benefits that stack up and up. Tax revenue, job creation, the list goes on and on”. This type of learning teaches its students how to think, not what to think, like how this project taught us how to think about controversial and contemporary issues by challenging us to think about different perspectives and aspects of it. With more traditional ways of teaching, we would be taught a one-sided, historically warped opinion or stance on the issue, but with this way of teaching and learning, I feel the students learn more and attain a stronger understanding of the material and its historical and modern day relevance.
Another example project and idea based learning is a play that I wrote over the course of a couple months in collaboration with a professional playwright, found here. While studying struggle and revolution around the world, we explored general ideas about the issue, but also were exposed to a variety of different materials that allowed us to form our own opinion on the topic. We then were assigned to write a play based on this broad topic that showed or addressed our opinion or stance. This form of assessment, rather than a test, resulted in more creative students and learning, and is shown in the variety of each student’s respective play and the issue they related to. My play is about the importance of ambitions and dreams in a person’s life, and the main character, Gordon, says to his son, Matthew, “You just take your dreams, and your grades for granted? Well I have news for you: you are a junior in highschool now! You’re not just some little kid with his whole bright future in front of him.” I think that learning through projects allows for more abstract and complex thinking, like how in a unit on struggle in hope I wrote a play about future and ambitions.
The comprehension fashioned by this style of learning, and my overall understanding and ability to think and connect can also be shown by looking at some of my journal entries from the year. I think the journals are a prime example of the types of students, learning, and learning environment project-based learning creates. When looking back on some of my journals I wrote over the year, I saw improvement in my complex thinking, and also complex and unique ideas. One of my first journal entries of the year, Journal 3, found here, posed the question, “When is it okay to criticize other cultures?”. I responded, “It is only acceptable to criticize another culture after we have walked in their shoes.” I feel that this response shows abstract and complex thinking. That is the goal of education, is it not? As the year progressed, my journal entries became more knowledgeable and more applicable. Much later in the year, Journal 47, found here, which related to the book Things Fall Apart, posed the question, “Can traumatic experiences ever be an excuse for negative behavior?”. In an excerpt from that entry, I responded, “Traumatic experiences can never be an excuse for negative behavior, it only makes it more understandable as to why someone behaves a certain way.” The journals showed how my ideas were changing and developing as the year progressed, and how the project based learning was shaping how I thought.
Looking back on the year, and how far I have come since September, I leave the year firmly believing that there really is no other way to teach World History other than through projects, discussion, media, and everything I already mentioned. At school you are supposed to learn how to think, not what to think, and I look back on the year knowing and understanding World History topics and ideas, and will carry them with me in their essence and application to modern day life as I progress on through high school.

Por Will Gonzalez

Por Will Gonzalez

Por Will Gonzalez

Por Will Gonzalez

Por Will Gonzalez

Poca Nieve Causa Retrasos y Cierres

por Will Gonzalez

Por Will Gonzalez

“Ayuda a Morir”

Biden no piensala.

Brown Firmó Ley Que Permite Conducir a Indocumentados

Pipeline Monologue Project
In this unit we studied the Keystone XL Pipeline, a proposed project by TransCanada. It would be a 1700 mile pipeline that would transport tar sands oil from Canada to refineries near the Gulf of Mexico in the US. However, many people oppose the pipeline's construction because of concerns regarding the environmental damage it may cause. It has not been decided yet if it will be built, it is awaiting approval from President Obama. It is up to him if it will be passed or not.
To better understand the issue, it is essential that the following is known:
- The pipeline is international, thus TransCanada needs President Obama's approval to build it (NeedtoKnowPBS).
- The construction of the pipeline would significantly decrease the US dependence on foreign oil. This has been a goal of the country for a long time. (NeedtoKnowPBS)
- Movements and protests against the pipeline have sparked all across the US due to the threat it may impose on the environment. Many people are against it. (350.org)
- It is speculated to create many jobs. However, people believe that it will get rid of more jobs than it creates due to the jobs lack of sustainability (NeedtoKnowPBS)
- “Prominent scientists have called the Alberta tar sands ‘the most environmentally destructive project on the planet.” -Montana Environmental Information Center
The Monologues:
Addressing the Senate
(Republican congressman John Kligman prepares to address the senate about the issue of the Keystone XL pipeline. He is in his office in Washington, DC, preparing for his address to the senate tomorrow morning)
(Senator Kligman sits down at his desk in his office. He removes his coat)
(to self) “So I’m addressing the senate tomorrow, on the Keystone XL Pipeline, hm? (takes out a $20 pen and a pad and begins to write)
“Fellow senators, colleagues, people of this senate. My name is John Kligman, Republican from Georgia. Today I will be addressing the pivotal issue of the Keystone XL Pipeline that is awaiting President Obama’s approval to be built.
(Pauses and lifts up his pen)
“So far so good”
(Resumes)
I was elected to Congress by the state of Georgia solely on the grounds of reducing our massive dependence on foreign oil, and to create more oil stability here on our soil, and create a sound and strong infrastructure. Upon election I promised my fair state that I would do everything in my power as senator to do so.
(writing ceases momentarily as he gathers his thoughts)
Regarding the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline, I believe we have been pitched a slow, underhand softball to slug out of the park (smirks to self). I believe that the oil stability and financial infrastructure that we desire have been practically handed to us on a silver platter. We are basically being given a freebie: no financial drawbacks with many benefits that stack up and up. Tax revenue, job creation, the list goes on and on. (writing flowing easily) As someone who stands for oil independence from other countries, and represents people who stand for oil independence from other countries, in my mind, no, rephrase that, there is really no question that this is something that should happen.
(pauses)
“That part came easily. But what about the environmental ramifications, hm? How should I prepare to answer those questions, and address that side? It’s obviously there.”
(Continues writing) The only major obstacle standing in the way of the Keystone XL is the environment itself. I, no, like many others I realize the harm it could cause to the environment. I realize that the “tar sands” oil it would be transporting is not quite as clean as other oils.
However, I strongly believe that the financial benefits will weigh this out. With our struggling economy, (to sef) “growing, no large, no astounding” astounding unemployment rate, and desperate need for oil independence, this pipeline needs to be built.
(pause in the writing)
(smiles to self) And I know a way in which we would have the best of both. I know a way in which we would be able to build the pipeline, and benefit from the economical boosts that it is certain to provide, while keeping in mind the protection and health of the environment. I propose a solution that would consider and satisfy both sides.
(pauses) You see, the pipeline will generate millions of dollars in revenue. What I propose we do is dedicate a large portion of the capital that the pipeline generates towards environmental protection, specifically where the pipeline may cause harm. What I’m proposing is we build the pipeline, then invest a part of what it generates to balance out its faults. It can be the solution to the problems it may create. In this way, it would always be fixing itself with the massive amount of revenue it generates. This is how I propose we address this issue. This is what I, John Kligman, think we should do.
(puts his pen down and looks up.)
(to self) “And the rest will go from there. I guess”
From the Other Side of the World
(Two oil drillers are talking on a rig in Saudi Arabia.)
“Man can you believe that? A 1700 mile pipeline running through the US?”................”What’s the big deal? I’ll tell you what the big deal is man. We might not have a job, that’s the big deal! We could lose our jobs man! Is that something you want?”....................”How do I figure? I’ll tell you how I figure man! Those morons in the US won’t need oil from us anymore! You heard what the boss said.”................”What did he say? Damn you are such a moron man. You were there! You know, 5 minutes ago when he called in everybody who works on this damned rig for an announcement, man, 5 minutes ago!”............”You really don’t remember? Man you’re such a moron.”.............”Hey now don’t call me a moron man! I’m not the one who forgot what the boss said five minutes ago--”.............”Fine SIX minutes ago at the very important announcement that everybody had to hear!”.............”You weren’t there? Why not?”..................”Busy doing what?”...............”None of my damned business? Is too my damned business seeing as I’m the one telling you that you may not have a job!”....................”Oh that’s real mature, man. Go ahead, just leave, see if I care, you moron!”................”Hey wait come back I’ll tell you what he said”..........”......if you tell me what you were doing first!”..............”Me first? Okay man fine. See if I care. He said that there’s this giganto pipeline being built in the US that’s gonna transport oil, like 800 thousand barrels a day, endangering this rig and our jobs! Well, it hasn’t started being built yet, but if it is, then we’re out of work”............”Why? Because we depend on the business of the suckers in the US, that’s why! Them having their own oil means we have no job!”...........”No not just us, everybody at the rig”...........”Yes even the boss.”..........”Because the rig’ll go out of business you moron!”............”Do I really think so? You know man, that’s just what the boss said, I really hope it aint true because I need this job man. You know I got my wife and boys at home, and I know I’m kind of mean sometimes--”........”--yes I know now shut up! Anyway even though I may seem like this stupid tough guy inside I am just a sweetheart and I actually really need this for my wife and boys. I love em so much, and I sure as hell had to work my ass off to get this work.”..........”That’s just what boss said. But for the sake of my life and my family I hope it isn’t true. Now why weren’t you at the announcement again?”
The River
(A small group has gathered along a river that is threatened by the keystone pipeline. Most of them have grown up along the river and depend on it for their living.)
(Talking gently) H-hello. How’s everyone doing today?
(murmurs among the crowd)
Good. (clears throat) M-my name is Jonah Porter, and I, l-like most of us gathered (pauses and looks to crowd) , grew up along this river (looks out to the shiny blue water). (Stammers) M-my earliest memories take place by this water. Th-this water has helped shape who I am today. It’s part of my identity.
(A short pause to let this sink in)
I remember evenings running along this bank (points outward) with my brother. F-first learning how to fish with my grandpa. My dad hoisting me up high over his head so I could see all the way across to the other side. (daintily) P-precious memories that I hold dear in my heart.
(exhales) Th-this river (points out) has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It was here I met my beloved wife (smiles timidly) It was here where my two beautiful children were born (wipes a tear). I love you both, (sniff) so much, and am (sniff) so proud of you. (composes himself) Out of respect for this sacred place, I have devoted my career to this river, and have become a fisherman. I de-depend on this river for a living and to support my family.
(crowd murmurs)
(gaining confidence) But now this is all at stake. These sons of bitches at Trans-Canada think they can get away with polluting and endangering our river (slams finger into podium)? (crowd shouts) They think they can get away with threatening our life and lifestyle? (more shouts) They think they can get away with saying to us, “just find another fishing spot because we’re going to harm your river”? Hell no! We will not find another damned fishing spot! We will not move to another river, away from our homes, our families, our histories because some bastards want to build a goddamn pipeline!
Heh. They say, “our pipelines are the best and they will not leak. It won’t harm the environment”, they say. So that means it won’t be harmful, right?
Well we have news for them: sending oil near and through this water WILL harm it, and therefore we have a problem! Not only are they not allowed to get away with this stupid and careless idea, but we most certainly will not relocate from generations of tradition so they can build their goddamn pipeline!
(crowd starts to get rallied up)
(smugly) Not so easy! We will not stand for this! We, the people of this river, this river right here, will fight to prevent harm to it, and to us, and we will fight for the common decency of us as a community!

Element Print Reflection
Zack Hersh
In this project, SLA's five core values are demonstrated.
Inquiry is demonstrated by asking questions like, "what is this element?", "what does it do?" or "what's cool about it?" to get started.
Research is demonstrated by actually researching these questions and your element, so you could know about it, and could create a clever and interesting design for your print.
Collaboration is demonstrated by having your peers and classmates there to help you if you need it. You may not know how to do something in the project, but a classmate does, demonstrating collaboration.
Presentation is demonstrated through the final product, final presentation of your element through your print. This is how you show off, or present your element.
Reflection is demonstrated here, in this blog post, by thinking back and reflecting on what was done and the project. It is thinking about what happened, and what will be taken away from this project.
This is how the five core values are present in this project.
Lord of the Flies Book Review
By Zack Hersh
Nobel Prize winner William Golding's classic "Lord of the Flies" explores and exposes the darkest parts of human nature, and the childhood desire of independence. Shield your eyes if you must, as insanity and gore take hold.
When a group of British boys crash land on a desert island, their first reaction is "Yeah! No Adults!". But when it comes time to govern themselves, that's when they start to head down a slippery slope and the tension starts to rise.
Ralph, the main character, discovers a conch shell, and when he blows it, all the other boys that were on the island come to the sound of the shell. This earns him the spot as Chief, much to the other main character, Jack's, dismay.
Ralph's goal as chief was to keep a fire burning all the time, so that if a ship passed by, it would see the smoke and come rescue them. Jack, however, could've cared less about the fire, and more about hunting, and his role as head of the hunters.
As the chapters progress, the tension between the two rises, and is ultimately pushed over the edge when a ship passes by, but Jack and his hunters had let the fire go out so they could go hunting. A furious Ralph calls Jack out in front of all of the boys, and Jack leaves to form is own tribe.
But his new tribe didn't play by the rules. Each day, the members grew more and more savage in their hunting clan. Their only cares were the hunt, and trying to one up Ralph's group. They attacked them unprovoked, and stole from them. They were aggressive, and highly dangerous as more and more savagery was brought out in them.
The book also speaks of a "beast", whose existence is unjustified. The thought of it strikes terror in some, but challenge in others. The boys attempt to find it and kill it, but are never successful.
But the "beast" also strikes respect, especially from the "savages". During a fateful hunt in the heart of the climax, the savage tribe hunts down a pig for their feast and pyretic dance. As an offering of respect to the beast, they cut off the pig's head, and put the bloody thing on a stick, and jam it into the ground. This "Lord of the Flies" represents the craze and bloodthirst in these boys, but also the so called "beast" being the humans themselves.
This boiling conflict can definitely be described as people versus people; Jack versus Ralph and their building tension that is ultimately set over the edge. But also, Jack's lot of boys versus Ralph's lot. It can also be described as person versus self, with Jack and Ralph both unaware of what this island has birthed and planted in them. This fast paced, high intensity, inter webbing conflict is exciting and engaging throughout the entire book.
Another significant character, and my favorite, Piggy, is also a boy on the island. As his name implies, he's fat, but as Ralph realizes, he's very bright and is an excellent thinker. This earns Piggy Ralph's respect, and friendship. They use Piggy's glasses to light the fire. This is a symbol of how someone may seem useless-- fat and lazy, but are more valuable then perceived. Piggy is also a significant symbol in the book. He represents civility, as he keeps this while everyone else is being subconsciously changed by the island and the lack of rules and civilization. His appearance, paired with his intellectual capacities and ability to stay rational justifies this. Much would be different in the book without him and his mind.
As it seems every character and item is symbolic, there is much to take away from this masterful craft. The Pig Head represents the humans being the beast. The conch, I believe, represents order and something to go around or follow. Something sacred and divine, but fragile at the same time. Ralph represents order, and civility, while Jack represents savagery and primal instincts. This balance, or fight, between order and savagery is a main theme to take away, and how people's desire for power can bring out these primeval surges.
I think I, and many others can relate to this book and learn from this book. While I've never been stranded on a deserted island having to govern myself, I feel I can relate to Ralph. I have had many experiences where I have tried to keep everyone orderly but their "primal urges", or craze, was difficult to. Like Ralph, I got very frustrated by that, because when everyone is going nuts while your trying to keep things orderly, it's annoying.
I also feel that if some of my friends were in this position, they would be succumbed to the beckoning of the urges of savagery and human darkness, but in society, they're not. We never see what these boys were like before landing on the island, but we can get a pretty good idea from how they develop, evolve, and change when going through this.
Overall, I feel this craft of literature is stellar writing. From the deep symbolism, heart-racing conflict, and picture-painting detail, I loved the book despite the grossness of it, and despite the lunacy and bloodshed that took place.
The rich symbolism is a strong strength. So much can be learned and taken away from this story, from each character and item, and this quality is a distinct strength.
However, while I thoroughly enjoyed it and was thoroughly impressed, there were a few easy to spot weaknesses I would have changed. Golding uses the same words over and over, and it was slightly infuriating to read. There was too much word repetition, such as "savage" and "hunt" being way overused. In the same way, every time he said "Ralph's fair hair" was aggravating, like the word repitition. Also, I feel he included things that didn't matter or affect the plot. like four pages about a littlun crying.
Despite all this, I thought this was a phenomenal book. It's quick moving pace, deep symbolism, and powerful themes made it a keeper in my eyes. If you can get past the gore, the savagery, the killing, and the insanity, I would recommend this book because of all this. There is much that can be learned and interpreted from this book, and if you dare look past the present topics that make us nauseous, it will challenge your analytical capacity and leave an impact.
Litter Blog 3
I'm Zack Hersh, and as an Agent of Change for litter, I organized a litter pickup around SLA, on April 13th, 2013 from 12-1 pm. While it wasn't quite the turnout I had hoped for, the nine of us picked up pounds and pounds of litter on 22nd Street and the disgusting Trader Joe's parking lot and green space. We left the area much cleaner and greener, and went home feeling satisfied.
But it took a lot of effort to get there. First, I had to familiarize myself and get to know the issue inside and out, and I did that through my first and second blog posts. Afterwards came the pickup.
The only thing I thought would really make sense to do for my Agent of Change part was a pickup, especially of the local community. This was narrowed down from other possibilities being Raising Awareness, Money for Organizations like "Keep Philadelphia Beautiful", and petitioning or trying to get more trash cans put in.
My vision was a bunch people all gathering around SLA, and working together, making a difference, and having a good time, in purging the neighborhood of litter.
Once I had the idea and vision in place, it was time to set a date, and time. It was a surprisingly tough decision. I was conflicted between having it be after school or on the weekend. If it was after school, it would be much easier for more people to come. But that would've limited it to mostly SLA students, and most sports, including baseball and track, have practice after school every day. With a weekend pickup, this wouldn't be a problem, but it would be harder to get a turnout.
Ultimately, I decided on a weekend pickup, and scheduled it two weeks in advance for Saturday, April 13th from 12:00-1:00.
The next, and most important part of my process was getting other people to join me.
I made flyers, and put them up all over school. I made posts to Facebook. I got two announcements in the Advisory memo. I talked to people directly. And, after all that, I had 3 people in total who said they would come, plus me and my parents.
But things have a way of working themselves out, and following that motto plus help from friends, when the pickup came, we had nine people in total.
Ridding the streets of all the garbage felt really good, and really satisfying. In that way, devoting myself to this issue, and being an Agent of Change, has strongly impacted me, for the better. Even the first two blog posts, researching it, and spreading the word, really made me feel like I was making a difference. It really made me feel like I was doing something right. I feel that this project, this experience, has strongly instigated fundamental, significant growth in me, and this is visible through my actions and who I am after this. It showed myself that I can lead, and surprised myself with what I am capable of. This was a demonstration, awakening, of leadership I didn't know I had.
In the end, I can go to sleep at night knowing that my community is different, better, cleaner, because of me. Knowing I started something that snowballed into so much more than I ever thought it would.
Knowing that I impacted, knowing that I changed my community, and almost without realizing it, let, and inspired others to do the same.

Negative Space Reflection: Hersh
2. I found negative space in the cutout by placing the cutout pieces against the paper they were cut from like a mirror image, creating negative space and depth.
3. It is helpful for an artist to see in negative space because it gives them a better view and understanding of an object and portray it more accurately and realistically.
4. Seeing in negative space enhances drawings because it makes the drawings look better, more accurate, and gives them depth.
Final Perspective Drawing Zack Hersh
2. This made my drawing look much more realistic and 3D which really added to it.
3. If I were to do this project again, I would draw the floor tiles after the tables and stools because constantly erasing and redrawing them was a pain and sometimes they threw me off.
4. My advice to drawing in perspective is draw everything all the way back to the vanishing point because it really helps with drawing orthogonals and making your drawing look realistic and accurate.
5. The resource that helped me the most was the online room practice. I really got the hang of it on that and I found it really helpful.
Macbeth Creative Piece Reflection
I actually got this idea way back when we started reading the play. From there I got the original lyrics from the song and listened to the song a few times to get a feel for the rhythm before writing my own lyrics. The ideas for the lyrics cam pretty easily and worked well, and I recorded on garage band. So overall, my creative process was simple and fun, but took a lot of time and hard work.
The most difficult thing I encountered for the project was actually finding the music to use. In the past when I have done parodies for school, I have found just the instrumentals (karaoke version) on youtube and recorded it on garage band, but finding just the instrumentals for this song was surprisingly difficult. It seemed like this was the only song that didn't just have instrumentals, and all of the karaoke versions still had the original singing in it. I searched around youtube, the web, and various karaoke sites, but could not find the needed music. I looked on iTunes, but they didn't have it either, so I eventually just had to buy the music for a couple of dollars.
Another very challenging aspect of the project was fitting everything I wanted to say into the song, which doesn't have that many lyrics. There are 3 choruses, two 4 line verses, and one 4 line bridge. While the chorus come easily (love somebody became kill somebody), the verses were more challenging because space was limited, there was a lot I wanted to say, and incorporate quotes. I overcame it by shortening lines and using shorter synonyms, and replacing lines with quotes. I also used lyrics in the parts where the original song just has "ohs". I also decided to have extra space by putting some parts into the chorus. While this made the chorus different each time after "kill somebody", it was worth it and helped me overcome the challenge.
I'm very proud of everything in this project. The outcome was much better than I was expecting. I think I wrote/used great lyrics that not only incorporated all five of the quotes, but told the story, supported my thesis, and fit the rhythm of the song. I think the song itself turned out very well (at least as good as I can be singing with laryngitis) and sounded great.
If I were to do something differently, I would record the music and the singing separately, if that's possible (maybe listening to the music on headphones). I played the music while I was singing, so they recorded as one, so I couldn't lower the volume of the music and increase it of the singing which would've been helpful and made it sound better.
From the classes presentations, I learned and had justified how creative our class is. I was very impressed with many of the projects I looked at, and very impressed with the level of creativity and amount of effort. I learned about all the different ways the same story can be interpreted and expressed, and that was really cool.
I learned about myself in this project also. I learned that if I really set my mind to something, I can exceed my own expectations, come out with an impressive result, and lose track of the time while my mind is whirring. I also learned that I'm willing to spend the extra time to take my work to the next level and not settle for good enough.
Here is my song parody.
Here are the original lyrics with my lyrics:
I know your inside, you're feeling so hollow
Macbeth was the worthy Thane of Glamis
And it's a hard pill for you to swallow
“For brave Macbeth- well he deserves that name”
But if I fall for you, I'll never recover
But now he’s Thane of Cawdor, and next in line for King
If I fall for you, I'll never be the same
Once he began chasing power, he wouldn’t be the same
I really wanna love somebody
I really want to kill somebody
I really wanna dance the night away
I really want to take their life away
I know we're only half way there
We could be king and queen, so come on
But you can take me all the way, you can tak e me all the way
Let’s do it today, Let’s do it today
I really wanna touch somebody
I really want to end somebody
I think about you every single day
King Duncan’s standing in our way
I know we're only half way there
If we kill him we’ll have it all
But you can take me all the way, you can take me all the way
So let’s kill him today, let’s kill him today
You're such a hard act for me to follow
So Macbeth, he killed King Duncan
Love me today don't leave me tomorrow, yeah
But had a hard time getting over it, yeah
But if I fall for you, I'll never recover
“Methought I heard a voice cry, sleep no more
If I fall for you, I'll never be the same
“Macbeth does murder sleep!”, and became King next day
I really wanna love somebody
I really want to kill somebody
I really wanna dance the night away
I really want to take their life away
I know we're only half way there
In order to keep my power I’ll
But you can take me all the way, you can take me all the way
Do this every day, do this ever day
I really wanna touch somebody
I really want to keep on killing
I think about you every single day
“Returning would be as tedious as go oe’r”
I know we're only half way there
Because of that I won’t stop here
But you can take me all the way, you can take me all the way
I’ll be killing every day, killing every day
Whoa, whoa, whoa oh oh oh
He’s becoming, he’s becoming, he’s becoming a tyrant
Whoa, whoa, whoa oh oh oh
He’s going, he’s going, he’s going mad
I don't know where to start, I'm just a little lost
Soon an uprising begins, led by Malcolm and Macduff
I wanna feel like we never gonna ever stop
Against “this tyrant whose sole name blsiters our tongues”
I don't know what to do, I'm right in front of you
The walls are closing in, Macbeth’s not not panicking
Asking you to stay, you should stay, stay with me tonight, yeah
“Direness, like to my thoughts cannot once start, me!”
I really wanna love somebody
I really want to kill somebody
I really wanna dance the night away
Anybody who is in my way
I know we're only half way there
Everyone is after me
But you can take me all the way, you can take me all the way
But I’m not dying today, not dying today
I really wanna touch somebody
I really want to keep my power
I think about you every single day
I don’t want it to go away
I know we're only half way there
But Macduff is coming for me and
But you can take me all the way, you can take me all the way
On this world I might not stay, on this world I might not stay
Whoa, whoa, whoa oh oh oh
Macduff is, getting near, adding to Macbeth’s despair
Whoa, whoa, whoa oh oh oh
The final, battle ensues, and Macbeth will lose
You can take me all the way, you can take me all the way
His tyranny ended today, his madness ended todayQuarter 3 Benchmark Reflection
From completing this project I learned that measuring buildings is much harder than it looks without the use of trigonometry. I learned that it is also difficult to take a picture of large buildings from the front. I also learned that drawing 54 windows to scale is very time consuming and takes much more time than you would think. But most importantly I learned the significance of being able to measure buildings, especially with congruency and similarity applications.
Como Hacer Un Sandwich de Mantequilla de Cacahuete y Jalea
Litter: Part 2
By Zack Hersh
“Travel and Leisure” recently named Philadelphia the sixth dirtiest city in the United States in 2012. While this is progress since being named the second dirtiest city in 2011, our city still has a long way to go.
Since my last blog post, a lot of new information on the topic of litter has emerged. Some of it confirms that we are starting to move in the right direction, but some also shows us that litter is still an ever present problem at a local and national level.
To get a more personal level on the issue of litter, I conducted a survey as original research. This also justified that while litter is still a big problem, we are starting to move in the right direction.
Out of the 52 people that took the survey, only 31% of them have never littered in some way. And only 33% of the people that took the survey said that they never litter! While this isn’t good, if you know that you litter, you can try to stop. Nobody said that they litter all of the time, but 9 people admitted to littering sometimes or often. However, what was really astounding is that only 10 of the people that took the survey didn’t know somebody who litters. That means that 42 of 52 people know at least one person who litters! Of those, 8 people know a teacher who litters! Teachers are supposed to be our role models, and if they are littering, then we have a real problem.
Probably the most important question I asked on this survey was what people thought should be done to fight against this problem. The number one response was “put in more trash cans and recycling bins”, over “organize pickups” and “raise awareness”,and I can relate to this on a personal level. On a walk to the Franklin from SLA one day, I had a piece of trash in my pocket and I was looking for a trash ca to throw it out, and for the entire walk, I saw only 1 trash can, and it was right outside the Franklin. I definitely agree that adding more trash cans and recycling bins could reduce the amount of litter in our city.
After this survey, I still don’t understand people’s motives for littering. On my survey, 12 people said they thought that raising awareness was the best way to help with the problem, and I agree here also. I think if poeple who litter knew how bad it was, they would think twice befor littering.
As for my agent of change, I have many ideas for things that I could do. I’m thinking of doing a litter pickup, but I also think that raising awareness, or raising money for organizations, or for the city could be equally effective.
But you can also do your part. Talk to people you know that litter. Pick up litter when you see it. But most importantly, don’t litter in the first place. For my bibliography, click here.
Gregor the Overlander
Gregor the Overlander Book Review
By Zack Hersh
While Suzanne Collins is best known for her best selling “The Hunger Games” trilogy, her book “Gregor the Overlander” was written before that trilogy, and explores the fantasy side of Collins’ writing. And, like “The Hunger Games”, the New York Times and USA Weekly bestselling “Gregor the Overlander” does not disappoint readers who are ready to fasten their seatbelts.
This adventurous, exciting novel is about an eleven-year-old boy name Gregor. He is what you would call an ‘ordinary kid’, but like to most things, there is more than meets the eye. He lives in a small New York City apartment with his Mom, 7 year old sister, baby sister, and their grandma since the mysterious disappearance of his father two years prior. Gregor follows his 2-year-old sister, Boots, through a grate in the laundry room of their apartment building, and they fall into the “Underland” below.
It is here where a human population lives in a delicate peace with giant roaches, bats, rats, and spiders. All that concerned Gregor was getting home, until the Rat Army, led by King Gorger, declared war on the humans, and an ancient prophecy foretold of a role for Gregor to help restore peace to Underland. Accompanied by two giant roaches, two giant bats, two giant spiders, and the Princess of Underland, he sets out on a quest to fulfill the prophecy and restore peace to the Underland. Along the way, he may run into familiar faces and discover new things he never knew about himself.
The conflict in this story is intense and tangled, a spiderweb of plot. Between Gregor’s futile attempt to return home, the Rats battling the humans, and everything else along the way, the conflict will keep readers hooked from the beginning. One way to describe the conflict is Person versus Person, or, in this case, People versus People, with one group of people being the questers and the humans and the other group being the Rat forces. But, the story is about so much more than that. It’s about adventure, friendship, and trust. It’s about trying to complete a brutal quest while at the same time taking care of a baby. While struggling to get along with each other. While struggling to survive. It’s about how the most unlikely of people can be the biggest heroes. And, those willing to indulge in this book will find the Underland an exciting and mystical place to be.
Gregor is not the only main character in the story. The Princess of the humans, and a deft, fierce warrior, Luxa, is also a highlighted character. While struggling to get along with Gregor, she helps and battles on the quest in any way she can. Without her presence, their journey would have been much different.
The other main character is Boots, Gregor baby sister, and my favorite character. She likes and is liked by everyone, and tries to be friends with everybody, oblivous to the danger that surrounds them. She accompanies her brother on the quest while being revered as “royalty” by the two giant cockroaches. She is always cheery and can make you smile, but sometimes, the other characters forget that she is only two, and is still a baby, and this might cost them on their journey.
Despite the stellar quality of the book, I feel it is hard for me and other readers to relate to the book. Nobody would find themselves in Gregor’s situation. Because of the fantasy nature of the book, most of the scenes aren’t relevant to people’s lives. However, I believe that this aspect adds to the book. Its fantastic qualities make it very exciting knowing that these things couldn’t just happen in everyday life. This quality is one of the many reasons I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and Collins‘ writing has yet to disappoint me. It was exciting and thrilling, with the perfect mix of dialogue and action, a distinct strength of the book. It is hard to get the perfect balance, but this book hits it home. Collins also has a great way of describing and writing action scenes so that it’s engaging and the reader really gets a vivid picture of what’s happening. She has a perfect way of mixing dialogue into and with these action scenes, and this is present in every action scene in the book.
It is quite difficult to pinpoint weaknesses in the book. Almost everything was excellent and almost every quality of the book was incredible and engaging. The only thing that fell short was the description of people and places. I would have added more of this, and it definitely would have added to the story. For example, she never really describes what Gregor and most of the other characters looked like, and it was difficult to get a picture in my mind of what the characters looked like.
But all in all, this book was phenomenal. I recommend this book almost everybody. Everybody who loves a good read with an exciting plot. Everybody who takes down a book in one sitting and leaves feeling sated. Everybody who enjoys thrilling adventures not weighed down my the inclusion of romance. Everybody who has it in them to enter the Underland will love this book: its plot, tempo, characters, writing, and everything else as much as I did. That is why I would recommend the book “Gregor the Overlander” by Suzanne Collins, because a good adventure with a unique cast of characters never gets old.

I moved over and enlarged the picture of the watermelon to have it bleed, which I had forgotten to do the first time. Also, I wanted to draw more attention to it.
I changed the font because it was kind of distracting and complex, and I decided that it would be and look better as something simpler.
I simplified the 3 pictures into 1 idea that incorporates all of them to keep it simple while still including lots of information.
Zack Hersh You and the World Blog Post 1
11.27.12
My name is Zack Hersh, and I am a freshman at Science Leadership Academy. This year in our English class, a large assignment we were given was to research a problem that interests us and become an agent for change related to that problem by taking action against that problem. The issue I will be discussing is litter.
I took an interest in this issue because it is very significant where I live and it has drastic effects on the environment. It is also an issue that has always been important to me and I wanted to help with this problem.
However, it is not always out of laziness that people litter. Some people think that by littering, they are helping the economy. They say: “I’m creating a job for somebody. It can be somebody’s job to pick up the trash”.
In fact, they are doing the opposite. The national government spends more than 10 billion dollars each year on cleaning up litter. That for sure is not helping the economy. Imagine if the 50 billion pieces of litter that land on the streets and sidewalks every year weren’t there. Think of all the things the country so desperately needs money for that the annual litter- pick up budget could be spent on instead.
This all too commonplace debacle can have even more negative effects on the economy. Properties in a littered area lose some of their value and become worth less. People don’t want to buy properties as much in areas that are covered with litter. How do you think that affects the already struggling economy?
But that is far from the only problem with litter. The most common forms of litter are cigarette butts and fast food packaging. These items take an enormous amount of time just to decompose. And what do you think will happen when a cigarette butt decomposes? Imagine of all of the bad substances in them that would be released into the environment.
Litter has many more terrible effects on the environment and wildlife. Animals can die from the trash they eat that they may mistake for food. Debris can get trapped in the stomachs of small animals, blocking more food from getting in, and they can starve in result. 6 pack plastic rings can easily get tangled around bird’s and other small animals necks, choking them.
Not only that, but when litter that lies on the ground doesn’t get picked up, it can wash into sewers when storms come and pollute our waterways. Our water systems eventually lead back into rivers, which lead into the ocean. This can have devastating effects on river and oceanic wildlife and plants. Plus, it can take away from the natural beauty of the rivers and the ocean themselves. But we’re not through yet. Just one piece of litter can lead to hundreds more. Litter invites more litter. If somebody sees a spot with some litter, they may see it as okay to drop some trash there too. So even if the entire city works their butts off to clean up litter, just one soda can, one fast food bag, can bring it all back. The more litter there is somewhere, the more inviting it is for more people to litter there.
You are probably reading this and thinking: “Why would somebody even do that” or “Well I’m not like that”. The truth is, whether we realize it or not, we probably have all littered at some point- but even accidental litter is unacceptable. Trash in a car can easily fly out open car windows or doors. Or off the open backs of pickup trucks. Even something small and/ or accidental, even just dropping a piece of gum on the ground, is litter. Have you ever walked down the sidewalk and seen lots of black and gray, penny sized spots? That is all dropped pieces of chewing gum, and it may never decompose. What about throwing “biodegradable” things, such as apple cores, out the window? That helps the environment, that’s not litter, right? WRONG! While they will eventually turn into soil, in the meantime they are still litter; they are still an eyesore and can still invite more litter.
Even something simple such as leaving a house window open can lead to litter. In our society today, littering is much easier than people may think. And this is just the streets and sidewalks. Need I mention the sides of train tracks? How about the food court at the mall? Everywhere we look in our city is littered with garbage and debris.
What can we do about this very serious issue? We can pick up litter and instigate pick ups, but people are just going to keep littering. Raising awareness about the problem could be much more effective. We can be mindful of our accidental litter. If we see somebody littering, we can encourage them to take it to a trash can. If we know someone who litters, we could talk to them about the issues behind it.
Several organizations also exist to help prevent litter. Joining them or supporting them could help with the city’s and the country’s serious litter issue. For now, you, me, everyone, needs to raise awareness and help create a litter free future.

Zack Hersh's Home Network
Tech Reflection
- My internet comes into my home through my wireless router
- My ISP is Verizon
- My internet is paired with my phone and TV. Together they cost $150 a month and costs $1800
- On my home network is my iPod, my phone, my laptop, my dad's phone, iPad and laptop, my mom's phone iPad and laptop, our phone service, our TV, and our Wii.
- All of these objects are connected wirelessly.
I learned a lot about networks from this experience. I found out that most people get their internet from a router. I also learned that internet falls down, so the best place for a router to go for the strongest network connection is the top floor of the house. Networks can have a lot of different various things on them at once. Also, a lot more things use the internet than I thought at first. Most of the time, people don't want to share their internet so it is password guarded.
What other people need to know about having their own home network provided by an ISP is there are a lot of bad things out in the inter-world that they need to be aware of and protected against.
