Sean DeSilva Capstone

Procrastinating is something that we all do from time to time. Whether it’s everyday, once every so week or on very rare occasions, it gets the best of us sometimes. For my Capstone, I interviewed 40 SLA students and their stance on procrastination. I wanted a good demographic of students, so interviewing 5 male and 5 female from each grade was the best option. I asked them several questions that pertained to their prior background in education, their current work ethic and their current sense of organization.

This has helped me and the interviewees get a better grip on what we’re doing when we’re at school. From my findings, we often procrastinate because… we can afford to postpone things. From small homework assignments to benchmarks or other school assignments… We procrastinate due to the main fact that we can afford to complete it later on. My interviews also often interested me in the psychology procrastination. I read many articles that talked about human tactics when it comes to accomplishing something. For example, I read how we use avoidance to cope with our emotions. Conducting my Capstone has led me to come to many conclusions on work ethic, environment and overall mindsets.

Bibliography
  1. Swanson, Ana. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/04/27/why-you-cant-help-read-this-article-about-procrastination-instead-of-doing-your-job/?utm_term=.04d01e3dcd24.

When I first came across this source, I thought it had an interesting approach to talking about procrastination. However, this source has expressed the idea of why we procrastinate in a very descriptive manner. It talks about the idea of the, “Money Mind,” which I most definitely want to include in my presentation. I believe that so far, this source has been the best in being able to convey new information to me and very interesting ideas. I genuinely felt that this was a fun read.

  1. "Procrastination: A Brief Guide on How to Stop Procrastinating." James Clear. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://jamesclear.com/procrastination.

Reviewing this source, it talks about how we as individuals can stop procrastination. It also gives various ways of working around procrastination. This source has been very in depth, providing us with graphs and amazing analysis. I might use some of the graphs provided here in my own presentation or I might make my own graphs to relate to the findings in my capstone.

  1. "Procrastination" Psychology Today Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/procrastination.

This source has been quite interesting as it talks about setting goals for yourself and taking control of your time. I believe that having goals set for yourself each day is quite important for you to retain your motivation. Since motivation is also a key factor in weather people procrastinate or not. The feeling of accomplishment can also be present once those goals are fulfilled even if they are small goals. This source did talk about things I already knew but it was good to have this source to kind of reinforce my initial ideas.

  1. Jaffe, Eric. "Why Wait? The Science Behind Procrastination." Association for Psychological Science. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.psychologicalscience.org/observer/why-wait-the-science-behind-procrastination.

This article talks about how everyone has procrastinated at least once and there are some that still do. However, not everyone is a procrastinator. There are some people that do so from time to time, others not so much. While some individuals do to it quite often. The article also opens up with a humorous statement. That statement being, “Believe it or not, the Internet did not give rise to procrastination.” I thought it was nice how this article opened up and gave me inspiration to have a humorous opening to my own capstone once I have finalized everything.

  1. Manktelow, James. "How Can I Stop Procrastinating'Overcoming the Habit of Delaying Important Tasks." Management Training and Leadership Training - Online. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newHTE_96.htm.

This source has been able to convey the idea of being able to recognize yourself. I feel that I should be able to make this point in my presentation. Being able to recognize yourself is the most important thing in progressing as a person. That would be a good idea for me to be able to express in my presentation.

  1. Cherry, Kendra. "The Psychology Behind Why We Wait Until the Last Minute to Do Things." Verywell Mind. Last modified December 24, 2012. https://www.verywellmind.com/the-psychology-of-procrastination-2795944.

This article talks about why we individuals wait until the last minute to do certain tasks. It includes numerical values which I think are important when wanting to express certain ideas. I believe that by using numerical values, it can make ideas a lot more compelling and understandable. I think that it would be beneficial for me to use numerical values to provide clarity to my audience.

  1. "Case Study: Procrastination." SoundCloud. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://soundcloud.com/your-daily-drive/case-study-procrastination.

This soundcloud podcast has been very interesting to observe. It talks about how a grown women procrastinates on certain things which also affects her personal life along with her marriage. I believe that if procrastination is affecting someone's life that much, they should take initiative to prevent it from harming them further. This podcast expresses that.

  1. Jones, Orion. "Procrastination Is a Strong Emotional Coping Mechanism." Big Think. Last modified January 25, 2019. https://bigthink.com/ideafeed/procrastination-is-strong-emotional-coping-mechanism.

Coping with certain things is a natural human tactic. However, this article takes a psychological approach. The article brings up the idea that people use avoidance to cope with their emotions.

9. Locke, Susannah. "Why Your Brain Loves Procrastination." Vox. Last modified April 18, 2016. https://www.vox.com/2014/12/8/7352833/procrastination-psychology-help-stop.

This article talks about the brain and why it ‘loves’ to procrastinate. I believe that it is the idea of false sense of comfort that allows us to procrastinate. It makes our brains think that we’re in a okay spot. I think that I should incorporate this idea in my capstone, since I can personally relate to this finding.

      10. Pychyl, Tim. "Procrastination A Misplaced Coping Mechanism, Says Psychologists." Denver News, Weather, Sports From CBS Channel 4 – CBS Denver. Last modified December 22, 2016. https://denver.cbslocal.com/2016/12/22/procrastination-study/."Procrastination A Misplaced Coping Mechanism, Says Psychologists." Denver News, Weather, Sports From CBS Channel 4 – CBS Denver. Last modified December 22, 2016.

This source has conveyed the idea of procrastination being a coping mechanism. Another source that talks about the idea of coping with procrastination as it’s in our brains to do so. The title of this article was also quite interesting, since it defines procrastination as a misplaced coping mechanism. Which I can believe can be used in my presentation. Initially I thought that I was going to simply talk about my own personal experience of procrastination and the interviews I’ve conducted. However, after viewing all these resources, I believe that I am able to incorporate a deeper meaning in this capstone.

Present Day

I lie in the hospital bed, waiting for my my father to aid me… That car crash really took a toll on me, huh? I wonder if I will make it...Heh… My eyes are s-so…tired… I struggle to stay awake… I fall asleep.

“Max! Wake up, you have to go to school!”

“Huh? Grandpa?”

“Yes moron, it’s time for you to get ready for school.”

“Oh, right. I’ll be downstairs soon.”

“Hmph.”

Alright I guess it’s time for me to get ready…

Once I’m ready,I run downstairs.

“Alright, I’m ready. See ya!”

“Stop. You need to eat your breakfast.” My uncle said in stern manner.

“Ugh, really? Even with those eggs?”

“Yes, boy! I slave to wake you up and make you food every damn morning.”

“Okay…” I begin to slightly shake, but I keep it to myself so he won’t notice.

“Here! Take it.” Grandpa hands over the food furiously.

“T-Thanks…” I shiver and eat a small bit of the food.

“Alright, I’m full.” I hand over the plate to my grandpa.

“You barely ate! What the hell. Boy...” Grandpa threatened.

“Sorry… I wasn’t hungry. I have to go now.”

“Get the hell out of here.” Grandpa hollered.

I walked to school, as sweat began to drip down my forehead. Wondering what will happen when I get back home.

The school day began and I couldn’t focus.

I went back home and grandpa was waiting for me.

“How… Was school?” Grandpa asked creepingly.

“Uh… It was good.”

“Don’t wanna talk to me?” Grandpa questioned.

I remained silent. I didn’t want to start any more arguments. I walked up to my room, steadily.

“Boy! Don’t think you can get away…” Grandpa threatened again.

I jotted up stairs in fear.

Why can’t I live a quiet, peaceful life? What does this man want from me?

Tears fall down my face as I lie in my bed, my head leaning on my pillow praying that I can warp to another world.

Authors Note: I decided to  use Atwood's writing style in my own short story. After analyzing her own work, I noticed that Atwood likes to convey emotions through descriptive language. I wanted to emulate this idea throughout my short story by showcasing how our protagonist felt when he was being scolded. His palms were sweaty, knees weak... He was scared to death and didn't want confrontation. Atwood is the type of writer that is easily able convey emotions through descriptive language and she does it well.

   Motivational Rewards
When it comes to academic performance, some students tend to lack motivation to keep going, to keep performing well in school. They tend to dip down in their academic performances and not care as much as they used to. Parents should be aware of their kids academic performances and get involved in their child's academics. Parents should always look to push their kids to do better on their academics, rewarding them based on their grades because it would push their child to perform better.

A study from education.gov titled "Should Kids Get Rewarded for Getting Good Grades in School?" touches on the idea of parents rewarding their kids with money for getting good grades. The idea of rewarding their child with money is a popular idea that is common is many households. The pros from this act would be boosting their child's motivation in school and confidence. However, with these pros come cons that view another side. The child may think that they need a 'paycheck' whenever they perform well academically. So the parent needs to find a balance between when the kid gets payed and how much the parent is willing to pay their child.

The idea of rewarding ones child with currency is accepted in society. Although, not every household would have the opportunity to reward their child with currency due to their economic stance. Which means that the parent should improvise, such as a nice meal for their child to be rewarded in one way. An article titled "Should Parents Pay if Their Kids Get Good Grades?" from Money Crashers touches on the subject of getting good grades and compensation. The article states, "Many parents who are willing to pay their children for good grades will argue that it is a child’s job to go to school and learn. Therefore, they should be compensated for positive results just as they are at their jobs." Being able to recognize the child's hard work is greatly appreciated with rewards. The simple of idea of parents giving recognition to their child is what ultimately matters.

Opposing parents may argue that it's their child's job to do well in school and it's not their job to reward them constantly. An article from Today.com expressed that. In the article, Mary Thorsen-Nolan who was a mom expressed their feelings towards the topic. The article states, "NEVER, EVER!” wrote Mary Thorsen-Nolan. “I told my kids that their grades and their ambition was on them, not me. ... I helped them to set their goals and encouraged them to work their hardest to reach them, but I never once offered incentive other than pride in a job well done.” This shows how parents can stick to their own rules and not confine to things going on around in society.

Parents should be able to recognize their child's hard work and reward them from time to time. The rewards do not always have to be money but any form of recognition that's rewarding is good for the child's growth. These studies show how parents should always look to push their kids to do better on their academics, rewarding them based on their grades because it would push their child to perform better
I think that this is my best 2fer yet because of the extensive research that I was able to do and how I was able to connect it in words to the reader. Other than that it was simple to come up with a debatable topic and show how these things matter in the real world.

Emotions Aren't Always Visible

Posted by Wedage DeSilva in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Monday, April 16, 2018 at 1:35 am

Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew shows how love can be perceived in many ways and how it may conflict with a character's state of mind. The root of love stems many questions within itself, and can be very hard to boil down to one sole ideal. Because of this, people who may believe themselves to be in love can find themselves questioning this fact and second guessing their feelings. This idea is seen throughout Dennis Dugan's Just Go With It.

In comparison with Taming of the Shrew, Just Go With It follows the story of a middle aged man named Danny who wants to find a synthetic love after being cheated on by his wife on his wedding day. Taming of the Shrew showcases the idea of a man named Petruchio who comes across as having a double sided personality- on one end, he is a man of honor who has endured many struggles while on the other he is a mercenary seeking to marry for wealth. Both pieces prove that the idea of loving someone is best approached when both parties have an understanding for one another because love isn't stagnant, but rather that something that develops through the progression of a relationship.

"I come to wive it wealthily in Padua; If wealthily, then happy in Padua."

(Act I, Scene II, 76-77)

In this quote, Petruchio conveys how he wants to be wed to a rich woman whom would make him happy. This shows how his idea of love is not the ideal idea but a philosophy he decides to live by. It also presses the idea of being in a relationship can be deceiving when one is in it for the money.

Danny in 'Just Go With It' also finds himself against a women who opposes his view points on their relationship.

just_go_with_it_1
just_go_with_it_1
In the middle of the film from 'Just Go With It' Jennifer Anistons character "Katherine Murphy" confronts our protagonist (Danny) about his ideas in their made believe relationship. As Katherine had to pretend to be Danny's wife throughout the film to avoid Danny from getting his feelings hurt from the woman he had met at the club named Palmer. This relates to the quote above due to the two ideas Petruchio views and Danny views not being something that's ideal to the other characters.
"Be patient, gentlemen. I choose her for myself.
If she and I be pleased, what's that to you?
'Tis bargained 'twixt us twain, being alone,
That she shall still be curst in company.
I tell you, 'tis incredible to believe"

(Act 2, Scene I, 321-326)

In this quote Petruchio obviously lies when he says Kate has agreed to marry him. This shows how deceptive he is when it came to the 'marriage' as he wanted riches and did not care for the actual 'love' involved in the relationship.

This quote also shows a truth into Danny's life in 'Just Go With It."

photo_49730.med
photo_49730.med
In the middle of the film, Danny and Katherine are on a date. Danny's facial expression indicates that he is not enjoying the date that they are on . In relation to the quote above, Petruchio seems to be cunning as tells lies and tries to get into a marriage for riches. Danny on the other hand is also cunning in a way in which he initially wanted Katherine to pretend to be his wife and this artificial relationship took a turn to bite Danny in the butt.
In conclusion, the Taming of the Shrew in comparison to Just Go With It both had the idea of relationships being deceptive and unwilling to change for the better. The Shrew had the idea of Petruchio wanting to be in a wealthy relationship in which he could prosper. While Danny in Just Go With It wanted to be in a relationship in which he would no longer get hurt, but ended up making many lies to cover up that he is single when he met Palmer (the girl of his dreams). Danny could have been honest but due to his past experiences he was confined into being a deceptive person in the relationship.

The Tormenting Tyrant

English 3

3 January 2018

Developing as a person requires openness. Being open about certain things will help people develop their habits throughout their life, developing character in the long run. But something that we need to take into account is that not all people are the same. Hiding certain beliefs or just keeping secrets from one another is known to be a common thing from any age. As humans we observe many characteristics in people. The way they greet you, look at you, help you and how they are involved in your daily life. Us, being humans keep secrets from one another thinking that it would solve the troubles we go through. I’m not saying that keep secrets from a loved one, a friend or someone important in your life is necessarily good, but it helps slow down the pain in the beginning.

From personal experience I can account for how keeping a certain secret made a significant impact on my life. It was my 5th grade year in middle school. Being 10 years old, I was ignorant about many things, but still willing to try and understand. I was a very social kid, in and outside of school. I was willing to make friends wherever I went and help others. But I hadn’t known the feeling of emotional damage. He was the new kid in town, named Justin. He was very quiet but still had that “I’m tough” look on his face whenever he sat down during class. At first, I was intimidated by him, I thought to myself “Should I say hi? He is a new student after all.” It was time to go to lunch, we had just been taught some mind boggling fractions in math class, I know right?! I went over to Justin, since he was two students away from me in the lunch line and I said, “Hey, nice to meet you my names Sean!” With a big smile on my face. Justin replied with a relaxed but yet insensitive tone, “Sup.” I thought to myself, “Well I guess he really doesn’t want to talk...I’ll just go get my lunch and talk to my other friends.” “Uh...I’m going to go get lunch.” I replied as I tried to make our quick conversation less awkward, walking away in embarrassment.

Once I got my school pizza, something that all middle schoolers dream about getting, that fresh five star school lunch quality, I sat down next to my other friends in my class as we began to talk about what games to play after school. Time flew very fast and it was time for recess! We quickly lined up to go outside in the warm sunny weather, it was the start of the school year after all. I walked in a group of friends as we reached the light that was outside. I’m not kidding, when our vice principal opened the door, it was really bright! But it was probably because of how bad our school lighting was. We all rushed outside screaming in excitement, to have forty-five minutes of freedom. As I traveled in the group of my friends, that was when I saw Justin all by himself. I went over to him and I invited him to play dodgeball with us and he accepted. I thought to myself, “Cool! Now we can be friends.”

Once we began the game of dodgeball, my favorite sport next to swimming, Justin gave me an intense look. A look that to this date, I cannot forget. It screamed “You’re going down.” I was very intimidated but I didn’t think too much of it in that moment. We started throwing the “spherical orbs of death” as I liked to call it, at one another. Justin came out of nowhere and throw two dodgeballs at me, and not on the arm. One hit me directly on the face while the other one collided into my left ear. The pain was a sting, a burn, a bad feeling. I immediately stopped the game and screamed at him, “What’s wrong with you?!” Soon after my eruption, the vice principal came over and assed the situation. He took Justin out of the game, to the office. My group of friends came over to make sure I was okay, I said “Yeah...I’m fine.” I walked away from the group and sat in the corner of the playground waiting for class to start back up again. Class resumed and the school day was regular as always, except that I had a gloomy look on my face until the school day ended. One thing I noticed during class was that Justin wasn’t there anymore. “I know what happened to him...He probably got expelled!” I thought to myself, smiling…”That’s what he gets.” I continued thinking about the severe punishments he can get. The school day ended, my father came to pick me up and we went home.

Although the school day ended, the actual day didn’t end. My father asked me if anything interesting happened at school as he handed me my sandwich since school lunch really didn’t satisfy my lunch. I told him, “No, same old, same old.” But being my father he knew something was up, and I knew that he knew. So I tried to look away from him whenever he tried to see my face. He saw a bruise on my face and asked me “What the hell happened?!” As rage consumed his eyes. I told him that I feel during recess and tried to laugh it off as I covered my tears. My father replied with a reassuring “Alright. But be more careful next time.” I responded with a “You got it!” trying to make myself seem fine so my dad doesn’t find anything suspicious.

The next day, I had school...Again! I know right? Five times a week for an entire year...Yeah tell me about it. My friends greeted me with big smiles as I waited outside the gate with my dad waiting for the school doors to open. “I really hope that kid Justin isn’t here…” I thought to myself, as my worried eyes spoke for me when my friends looked at my gloomy face. “Good morning!” The principle shouted. “Have a good day, Son.” my dad told me as he kissed my head and patted me on the back, “See you soon” I said as I tried to force a smile out of my resisting body. I walked up the mountainous steps for a 10 year old, to the auditorium. Just to be greeted by the vice principal and next to him, Justin. “Justin would like to say something to you, Sean.” The vice principal said to me in a firm manner as Justin looked at me, teary eyed. “I’m sorry about yesterday, Sean. I got too aggressive when we were playing.” “Oh, it’s okay! Let’s be friends, right?” I asked Justin as my day felt like it was beginning to shine once again. “Yeah! That would be cool.” Justin responded as we shook hands and walked to our classroom.

The day presume, regular classes, regular me. Once recess approached, I asked Justin if he wanted to play tag with my friends and me. He replied, “Yeah, I love tag dude!” “Ha! Me too.” I said smiling as I reached out for a high-five. He rose his left hand up high, to what I thought was a high-five coming back at me...But it wasn’t. He slapped me across my left cheek, causing a red mark to appear on my face. Once he had made contact with my face I immediately thought to myself, “This kids insane...I try to befriend him but he just wants to hurt me. No wonder he’s alone.” Tears quickly fell down my face, the pain was nostalgic. I looked at him, with rage and sorrow, uttering these words, “I hate you.” I’ve never actually said that to someone and meant it...But in that moment I knew I meant what I said. Justin looked back at me, cocky, grinning and heroic. He asked me “Oh, yeah? Well what are you going to do about it?” “Just wait…” I said, threatening him as I was hurt emotionally and physically.” I walked away, I walked to do the right thing. I tapped the vice principal on the shoulder as he patroles the playground. “Justin’s bullying me!” I said with anger, wiping my tears off my face, looking at the vice principal in the eye. Justin ran over to the principal nad I, exclaiming that he didn’t do anything “wrong.” The vice principal and I both knew he was in the wrong, due to his prior actions. The vice principal called my dad over to asses the issue for good.

Justin and I both walked to the office to resolve this issue. My dad walked in a couple minutes after, as our house was close to the school. “Sean? I knew something was going on!” My dad shouted in rage as he entered the office. I’ve never seen him this angry, but not at me...At Justin. “How could you do this to my son? I assumed that the vice principal had informed him of the bullying Justin had done to me. “All he wanted to was welcome you and be your friend!” He continued, Justin looked like he was going to cry, but he held back. “I-I’m sorry...I really am.” Justin muttered as a tear rolled down his face, onto the ground...Splashing like the ocean had dropped onto the dry ground of the Earth, expanding onto the cracks of the ground. “It’s okay, Justin.” I said quickly, before my father went off on a further rant. “I understand where you’re coming from.” I said when I really didn’t. “Just make sure to be kinder to others, because not everyone's tough as you!” I said laughing to bring some humor to the tension. “Dad, it’s okay, he’s learned his lesson.” I said to my dad to calm him down. “Alright Son.” “Thank you.” My dad said to the vice principal, as pulled me out of school early. We walked home, I didn’t want to look back at Justins face, but I did. I saw him crying, but I knew it was for the best, for him to learn his lesson and become a better person.

I’ve learned throughout the 16 years that I’ve been on this planet, that not everyone's the same but we all sometimes desire the same thing. That “desire is to seek help when we are on the needing end. Many people, like you and I, may go through strife once in awhile but the main question that rises is “How do we deal with it?”

Esports and Economy

People have been playing sports competitively as a tradition for a very long time. E-sports however, is a new side to competitive sports. It’s the new generation of sports. E-sports is competitive gaming that involves professional gamers to compete and be the best of the best, while thousands to millions of spectators watch. The idea of broadcasting populated online games to the public, taking high ranked players of said game and putting them in major tournaments which could decide their future in the esports scene is something out of the ordinary. People of many ages are hooked on this concept, wanting to support their new found love and get involved with it. However,  well known markets want to take that for advantage because they want a new involvement from other people as well.
When something new is introduced to a large amount of people, there will be many to take interest to said “new” persona. For example, when the esports scene was introduced not too long ago, gamers and fans alike all got together to support this idea. Big market companies always want to find a way of getting involved with things that that would receive them notice. The database from Newzoo touches on the subject of the fan base. The study states that “52% of sports fans are aged between 21 and 35 years old and 20% of them are between 10 and 20 years old according to a study by Newzoo.” This finding shows how the growth of esports can come to be. From a wide variety of ages, esports can gain recognition due to the interest all  ages can convey. This recognition can also bring in notice outside factors, that may benefit the growth of esports and the teams in the esports scene as well.
Global publicity is also an influential factor for the growth of esports. For example, Europe would have a lot of global publicity when it comes to esports in the EU scene. Well known franchises such as FC Schalke 04 and Paris Saint Germain are reputable franchises in Europe. This may foreshadow the constant participation within esports from major franchises to strengthening one another's reputations. According to this article, “Leodelimajr. ‘Investing in the Growth of eSports (with images) · leojunior.’ Storify,” it displays a linear relationship between the global publicity for esports and the recognition received to the profiteers as well as the esports scene in general. Taking an indepth look into this, there is a noticeable far-reaching majority of people who watch these esport events. Due to the article's framework of data, a variety of companies may take notice in the exponential growth of esports.  Due to the article's framework of data, a variety of companies may take notice in the exponential growth of esports. This form of recognition may be beneficial for both parties. For example, if said company notices a well known team in the esports scene, the team's fan base may take notice in the company’s investment and support that side of the party as well.
When these said major markets are involved with esports, they contribute a large amount for the teams or organizations they’re willing to work with. Contributions such as investing millions into the team's, buying equipment and managing players are a few of the vast things markets do when involved with esports.  Due to the article's framework of data, a variety of companies may take notice in the exponential growth of esports. This form of recognition may be beneficial for both parties. Recognition is a major part in the financial incline of esports due to outsiders being involved with it. The word ‘outsiders’ signifies the rest of the majority that isn’t fully hooked or invested into esports morally. There are people who conclude that esports isn’t a traditional way of sports. Which is true. As stated before, esports is unfamiliar and original. When something new is introduced there is the occasional controversy. The same rule is applied to esports.
There will be the occasional “esports shouldn’t exist” type of people. With time, as esports grows it would much more common concept. A way in which the ‘outsiders’ of esports would get involved would be from the publicity that regular sports team produce. According to this article, “Why Pro Teams Invest In esports.” The Next Level, 16 Mar. 2017,  it’s made evident that sports teams have many other justifications for their involvement with esports. One reason for this phenomena is marketing. The article states “McCullough has seen Misfit fans who are Heat fans and are excited they have an NBA team they can root for and Heat fans who are eSports fans come to the forefront.” Misfits is an esports team in in Europe with the NBA team is the Miami Heat in the U.S. The quote stated shows how both fans of each respective team supports one another. This allows both teams to have an influx in publicity and fan base growth.
There are two variables in the growth of esports. One being the major franchise or brand the other being the competitive game or team. They feed into one another, allowing both parties to receive benefits due to the franchise or brands investment or recognition in it. While the competitive game or team's fan base gives understanding to the investment. Supporting one another allows both facilities to grow. Although non-gamers might not think that esports matters much, its influence goes beyond the silly games to publicizing esports to major franchises and brands, ultimately increasing the number of beneficial outcomes for both parties. This shows how the publicity received from the esports genre can feed into the major franchises or brands because of one another's well known stance. Proving how major franchises or brands find it as a necessity to associate themselves with something 'new,' because it can and will lead to successes for both sides.

Sean's song

Sean DeSilva

Soy yo

Soy nuevo. La historia me hizo

Soy un gamer

Amo a mis amigos y a la familia

Nado para siempre

Las olas me hablan

El pescado llora bajo las rocas

Nado porque soy de las olas

Veo el océano azul

Oigo los niños

Pudín de carmelo

Toco la hierba mojada

Soy competitivo

Entiendo ahora

Cómo trabajar

Somos productos de Filadelfia.

No soy americano. América está en mi.

Sólo quiero caminar con dignidad

Y conquistar mi libertad - la que tengo

Aprendo de la vida, la calle, y su soledad

Mi verdad

The Double Minded Man Macbeth: Sean DeSilva and Jason Lam!

Posted by Wedage DeSilva in English 1 - Giknis - X on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 10:12 am
Rationale:
For our project, we decided to do a playbill! The main reason why was because we felt that we were able to express our idea easily with a simple picture and a quote! We wanted the audience who read our play bill to fully understand the inspiration of Macbeth and how it affected the way we read Shakespeare. Macbeth was a hero and he turned into someone we didn't know as he was influenced by many thing and people. Lady Macbeth influenced him into killing King Duncan for power. The witches influenced Macbeth with their prophecies and that made Macbeth want to have power and rule. My partner and I wanted to include information on the killing scene and how Macbeth transformed from this amazing, brave hero to this confused tyrant! Jason Lam wanted to include include the information of the Macbeth's transformation here!

https://docs.google.com/a/scienceleadership.org/document/d/17OWclXQDDzrAuDaVz0O5EMER2vfOTd_YXLuczSRjm8A/edit?usp=sharing

For the actual design on how Macbeth will look like on the Play Bill, we wanted to have a tear going down from his left eye which is a tear of blood. This resembles how Macbeth had killed many human being but he still has sympathy and compasion for the ones he didn't want to kill but was forced to. A good example of this would be King Duncan. We wanted to center out the design of Macbeth;s portrait from head to shoulder. The reason being is because we wanted that to be the main attraction and show how Macbeth stands. We decided to include Macbeth holding a dagger, but then we turned that into Macbeth's hands being bloody. Thus showing the audience that Macbeth is in fact  a killer!

As you can see here this is our FINAL PRODUCT LINK:
https://docs.google.com/a/scienceleadership.org/document/d/1GcilqgXMY6xcwRGwMgchwAU8KoimPXgtwsWOQqkImOg/edit?usp=sharing

We have the process and how Macbeth finally came to be! We wanted to get a general idea on how he should be placed and the physical features he should contain. After we had thought of the general placement and physical feature idea, I decided to experiment on what he should be wearing. I wanted him to wear royal knight gear, with his crown on-top of his head. This shows that he is ready to fight with the "royal might" he has left. With the hair style I wanted to make him have a old fashion, clean and noticeable hair style. This shows that this has taken place a long time ago since the outfits are not modern. With the color scheme, we wanted him to have a grey knight gear along with the black hair complementing his skin color which is peach. With the crown I included the two colors green and blue showing that those are gems on his crown along with the bloody tear which is obviously red. Macbeth's facial expression meant everything so I wanted to incorporate that in the center of the playbill. Showing his anger through a sorrowful tear. After we had covered that, I outlined everything with a pen to make sure that the outlines are what we want to focus on to add more texture. Then, we decided to include the quote "Will all Great Neptune’s oceans wash this blood clean from my hand?” in the background. This shows that he has bloody hands and he has regretted his decision and his corrupted mentally. Many decisions were made and many quotes were used to finally decide on our master piece!

U2 #8 Reflection

In class we watched Frontline's Digital Nation. It contained a variety of stories from a teenagers perspective and how they behave online. This show talked about how teens would confined to people online about their problems and not tell their parents anything. I would say that the most memorable part about this show would be how it contained teenagers and their point of view. Which relates to may teenagers like me. I would say that this is important to watch because it can teach many teenagers to behave online and not to rely on people online all the time. To keep my future family safe online I will limit the time online for only 3-5 hours a day. It is important to talk to your family about internet safety because you can tell them something that they can help you with. For example if someone is stalking you online, you can tell your parents the problem to resolve it. And also they can be more aware of the situation. I would tell these parents to make sure they watch their kids when they are online to keep their identity safe!

Becoming ME! (Remastered) By Sean DeSilva

                                                                                                      Reflection

Receiving a lot of constructive criticism improved my perspective on how my slide should be presented. Before, I really did not know how to describe my slide to the audience. But now, having a better understanding of contrast, how colors can collide, catching someone's attention and the three dimensions to a slide made me feel more confident as I "remastered' my slide from its previous state. The point I wanted to get across when I was presenting my previous slide was not so clear and I wasn't able to explain it since I had to describe/explain my slide and not tell a story to the class. Since I re-visited my previous slide, I am confident that with the revision, I am able to explain to the audience my journey through the perspective of the slide. Throughout the critique, I learned that not all audiences want and or need bright colors to get their eye. Sometimes something as basic as a black and white picture can interest and grab the audience's attention. The main reason why I made these specific changes to my slide were to be able to present the slide in a clear and informative manner. With some font and color adjustments my slide is now ready and remastered!

 Inspiration Is What Drives Me

Create a script to describe that slide. Why did you make the slide look the way it does? What influenced your decision making? Use new vocabulary from the websites to write this script.

The reason why I chose to make my slide the way it is, can be for many reasons. But the main reason why I chose to include the quote and the picture is because I want to inspire people who read this. You see, I play this game called "League of Legends.'' I started the game 3 years ago (October 22, 2012). I fell in love with it and wanted to get better. I was inspired by many of the famous Pro-League players and I wanted to become the best player in my area. I was driven by the inspiration that was given to me due to my discovery of the game. I want to be the best that I can of the game and I still want to, after years and years of practice and determination I am almost there to where I want to be! I want people to understand that only losers give up and winners always try no matter how hard they've fallen! Don't let your dreams be in your head, make them real for others to see!

No si ni serio

Home Network, DeSilva

 Home Network by Sean DeSilva

My Internet Service Provider also known as ISP is Xfinity from Comcast. The Comcast cable connects to my modem/router which activates the Wifi. Then the other piece of the cable connects to my laptop, so it's known as the Ethernet. My Samsung Galaxy S4 smart phone, 3DS Xl, PS Vita and my dads Nokia smart phone can easily connect to the modem/router which gives off wifi. During my Technology course with Mrs. Hull, I learned that when you connect your device to Wifi, you actually pay additional amounts of money for having that device connected to your ISP which I thought was very shocking. I will tell other people to not have your devices connected to you ISP all the time because they will have to pay more than they need too. Also, I would tell them to call their ISP to fix any issues with the Internet.

Who am I ONLINE? by Sean DeSilva

Posted by Wedage DeSilva in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Monday, October 26, 2015 at 6:30 pm
Today, in Mrs. Hulls class we watched a short little animation called "I Am A Witness". While watching the video I thought to myself, "Wow, poor kid.. he did nothing to those three kids and yet they still bully him." I was thinking to myself, what I would have done if I were in his shoes. Bullying has been going on for years. To kids calling people names on the bus, to physically hurting them and even Online Bullying, called "Cyberbullying". Try your best to avoid bullying because once you get yourself into it, it's hard for you to get out of it. And it might not just be you that gets yourself into it, it might just be the bully himself/herself that just picks on you knowing that you can't do anything about it. So please, stand up for yourself if you're being bullied, and if you see someone else being bullied/picked on, don't just stand their and watch tell an adult. Because watching someone being bullied is worse than being the bully!
