Abstract:

I created The Empire: All Things College Basketball In Philadelphia last year with my good friend Benjamin Simon after attending a journalism conference at Germantown Friends School (GFS) and being inspired by National Baseball correspondent Tyler Kepner. Kepner shared a magazine of his own creation from when he was younger, which led to our sports website idea.

I prepared for the upcoming season by writing recruiting profiles for incoming freshman who were recruited by the six schools that we decided to cover (Temple, Saint Joseph's Penn, La Salle, Villanova and Drexel). The recruiting profiles helped us lay down a foundation for the site.

Once we were informed of the media polices related to covering a college basketball team by two collegiate media relations directors, we began to conduct our first interviews with players and coaches.

We added more writers to our staff by sending out a tweet from our @PhillyEmpire Twitter handle. Shortly after, two writers agreed to join us. We gained traction by posting articles to Twitter and Facebook, which led to a staff of nine writers and a photographer.

From having access to the media room at the Palestra and Hagan Arena, to sitting courtside next to professional journalists at games, to listening in on Phil Martelli and Steve Donahue’s post-game press conferences, this has really be an exhilarating experience and one that I could not have even dreamed of. My website has come a long way in the past year and I want to continue the success.

"Home." City of Basketball Love. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.

City of Basketball Love is a website that covers men’s basketball throughout the tri-state area, more specifically they write about high school and college basketball. The editor-in-chief of the site Josh Verlin, who graduated from Temple University with a degree in broadcast journalism, has served as a resource for the site and has aided us with his knowledge of  journalism and media. His blog has served as an example of high quality sports journalism, as well as high school and college men’s basketball media coverage, which in turn has given us guidance and led to our site being what it is today. This site is credible.

The New York Times article “Imported Stars Give Red Sox a Chance at a Worst-to-First Repeat” was written around the same time Ben and I attended a journalism conference at GFS (Germantown Friends School) by Tyler Kepner. Kepner, who is a GFS alum and national baseball correspondent for The New York Times, spoke at that conference and I was inspired by his experiences as a teenager when he created his own sports magazine. He also had the opportunity to interview Philadelphia Phillies baseball players at that youthful age. I have used this source by following in Kepner’s footsteps by creating by own media during my teenage years. This article was credible.

Since it is a press conference recording, the recording included questions from many reporters who attended the game, which the Hawks won and responses from Martelli. The content of the press conference recording was used as background information to better understand the team’s mindset at the time, which turned out to be the same as it was in the beginning of the season “Win the day”. This press conference recording was credible.

"WFUV Sports Halftime Show." WFUV Sports Halftime Show. WFUV Sports. Philadelphia, PA, 16 Jan. 2016. Radio.

U.S.-AUS Relations

Posted by William Derry in American History - Jonas - C on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 8:36 am
The United States and Australia (AUS) have had diplomatic relations for 75 years. The relationship began in 1940 after AUS left the British Empire. The ANZUS security act, which was signed in 1951, was put into place to create the foundation for the defense and security relationship between the two countries. This act was not enacted upon until 2001 by AUS, after the 9/11 attacks. I decided to focus on this topic because I thought that AUS has an interesting geographical location in the world. Also, in my mind, AUS is often forgotten when it comes to U.S. foreign policy.

I chose my topic by first looking through the suggested topics that were posted to my history classes online webpage. I saw that each category had a topic of interest and I’m interested in sports. This led me to topic of Ben Chapman and the Philadelphia Phillies. I’m from Philadelphia, PA and an avid sports fan so, this topic was high on my list. I saw “42” which is a movie about Jackie Robinson and in that movie Chapman is mentioned in the movie. Chapman is not portrayed as the good guy in the movie but he was a prominent character in the story of Jackie Robinson.

RAFA

Posted by William Derry in English 3 - Rami - D on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 1:26 am

John Carlin, a journalist, who specializes in politics and sports, co-authored Rafa with tennis great Rafael Nadal. Previous books that he has written include “Knowing Mandela” and “White Angles”. He is from London, England and graduated from Oxford University. Rafael Nadal is one of the greatest men’s tennis player’s in history but his journey to where he is today, was not an easy one.

Nadal’s journey begins in Mallorca, Spain, where his family still lives today. Mallorca is an island, located in the Mediterranean sea. Nadal was born and raised in Mallorca. Nadal still visits the island, to see friends and family, who still live there. He enjoys visiting Mallorca, because he can be himself and the grand scenery that is there.

This book has chapters but within those chapters they’re sub-chapters. The beginning of this book starts off with Nadal describing the feeling of being on Centre Court at Wimbledon. Throughout this book, Nadal speaks in first-person but as it goes on, he speaks in third person. Also, this book refers to Nadal’s biggest critic, who is also his biggest motivator. Their relationship and how it came to be, is displayed all through this book.

Many believe that Rafa’s biggest obstacle, in the game of tennis is his opponents. That would make sense, playing against tennis greats such as Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic but that is not the case. Not the heckling fans or the fans that do not say please when they ask for his signature. Rafa’s obstacle has been right beside him the entire time and has even helped him along the way.

The critic, Rafa’s Uncle Toni, has been by Nadal’s side since he was a boy and has never stopped coaching him. Nadal attributes most of his mental toughness, on the tennis court, to his Uncle’s coaching. Their relationship is peculiar, because he is his Uncle, but they have a player/coach relationship as well. Toni treats Rafa just like any other coach would treat their player, with respect but with determination.

Rafa gives the reader, an abundance of information about Nadal and his personal life, but one thing that is not done well in this book is, the consistency of one voice. The dialogue in this book is mostly done by Nadal, but the co-author’s voice is often heard through the dialogue within this book. Furthermore, the chapters in this book seem to be out of order and are not in chronological order. The beginning of the book starts abruptly and it takes the reader a while to understand the significance of the first chapter.

The book takes you in the mind of Nadal, his emotions on and off the court are revealed. It takes you onto Centre Court at Wimbledon, and explains what it’s like to play on that court and in front of the large crowd. Nadal’s match against Roger Federer, which was one of the biggest matches of his career, is highlighted in great detail, from before the match even starts to when he is celebrating his Wimbledon grand slam victory on Centre Court.

Readers, who like sports and close family relationships, would enjoy reading this book. The background of this book is family, the importance of family is key in this story because it made a kid with a dream into a global tennis icon, who has had a tremendous amount of success. This book is not only about the game of tennis, but, what every athlete deal with on a daily basis.

The physical and mental side of being an athlete is talked about in this book and it shows how one athlete in particular deals with it all. From the massage table to getting his foot taped before every practice and tennis match, Rafa shows the reader what happens before and after the lights and cameras are on and everyone is watching around the world.

This book will push your thinking about what an athlete really is and what sacrifices they must make to get to their end goal. Losing is not the worst thing for an athlete, because it humbles you and makes you come back even stronger the next time. It’s going to happen but the thing that everyone will remember is how you respond to failure. Rafa leaves the reader wanting more, when the book has concluded. This is a motivational story, so, people who would like to read a book, that shows a person having to persevere through tough times, would enjoy reading this book.

The slips of paper that are attached to the tennis racket are quotes from RAFA. The quotes are on a tennis racket because Rafael Nadal is a tennis champion and player. Each slip of paper on the racket represents a quote from every chapter of the book.

2014 National Day on Writing

Posted by William Derry in English 3 - Rami - D on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 2:58 pm
The block that I live on is very diverse and if I were to give it a label, I would label as a melting pot. I love the city of Philadelphia because it’s home and it’s where I was born. Most of my family lives in Philadelphia and the family members that do not live in Philly, live in close proximity to Philadelphia. The images of Philly that are shown on the news are not a full representation of the city. They only show the city through one lense and that is not the lense that I see my city through. The city of Philadelphia should be known for the great colleges that are located here and the history that this city possesses. Furthermore, Philly use to house the White House and most people don’t even know that. Philly is a place for anyone who wants to be a blue collar citizen or wants to be around them. All are welcome in the city of Brotherly Love and Sistely affection.

Dreams Don't Always Come True

Posted by William Derry in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 7:21 pm

When I was a rising freshman at SLA, the summer before that school year I went to a Phillies baseball camp. During that week of camp I had the opportunity to tour the Philadelphia Phillies baseball stadium. As the Phillies tour guides walked my group around the stadium, we were asked trivia questions about the Philadelphia Phillies organization.

One question that was asked to the group of campers was, “ What was Michael Martinez's jersey number before he had number seven?”

As the rest of the group started to answer, I raised my hand and waited to be called on.

“Nineteen!”

The entire group was surprised that I knew the answer to the question. As we continued the tour around Citizens Bank Park we ended up sitting down in the press box of the ballpark. The tour guide had another question for us.

“Who was the last Phillie to hit for the cycle?”

Again the answers started coming from the mouths of other group members. “Chase Utley” one of them said and the tour guide said “no” and I raised my hand and said “ David Bell”. The tour guide said, “you're right”. Later in the day, I overheard one of the tour guides talking to another employee in the Phillies clubhouse and he said ‘this kid knew the answers to all of my questions”. I was able to hold Carlos Ruiz’s, who was the Phillies catcher at the time, bat because of answering the questions correctly. This made me feel important and special on that day.

When I was in the eighth grade, I loved Evan Turner, who was the 76ers shooting guard and I still do today. I had a friend who loved LeBron James and the Miami Heat. The 76ers and the Miami Heat played a lot during that school year. The Heat won the first three games of the series against the Sixers and it did not look like the Sixers would ever have a chance to beat the Heat. On Easter sunday, the 76ers and the Miami Heat played for the last time that season. The 76ers won! The game winning shot was by sixth man Lou Williams.

When that happened I told my friend, “ I told you so.” and he of course said the Miami Heat were still the better team but on that day the Miami Heat were defeated by the 76ers.

I believe that the deeper role that sports plays in society is that it is a form of entertainment. Furthermore, I believe that people watch sports because they want to see the ability of these professional athletes. Most sports fans wish they could do the things that professional athletes do but they know they can not. Sports are games that were made for children and have become a profession. I believe that we start out with a love and passion for sports but as time goes on we lose sight of that passion and focus on the money and fame from that sport. Most sport fans have a dream of playing a particular sport professionally, but end up not being good enough or getting hurt and just becoming a fan. We all have the opportunity to become a professional athlete but not all of us have the right people around us to teach us or show us how to get to that level. Sports are also used by fans as a time to sit back and relax and watch a good show. The professional athletes are also our role models because when we were younger, we looked up to them. Everyone dreamed of having luxury. When we got older and we were not able to make a professional sports team, we would try to get a job in sports or become season ticket holders. Overall, we would all like to become a professional athlete but there is not enough space for everyone and you must be one of the best in that particular sport to be able to play on the team.

Sports are everything to me and I love them. I love the different athletes, but what I really love is the sport itself. The fame is great, but I just love how passionate people can get over sports. Furthermore, I love that I could travel all around the world and people would know things about sports. Sports are a way for me to sit back and relax and get to know someone. Most people look at their phones to see who texted them, tweeted them, or posted something new on Facebook but when I look at my phone the first thing that I see is a news alert from ESPN and it is usually about something that has happened in the sports world that day. Most of the clothes that I wear are clothes made by sports brands. The different TV stations that I watch have to do with sports and the articles that I read have to do with sports. I can not even remember the last time, I went a day without sports. I believe that sports help me connect with people and help me to get to know them better.

I believe that the general public is bias toward sports fans. This is true because the general public wants to be entertained and also wants to see other human beings do spectacular things. We all want the ability to run down a basketball court and dunk the ball with great force or be in a NFL huddle and be the starting quarterback calling out the play that could potentially win our team the game or score a winning goal in soccer and hockey and we as fans can not do that, so we cheer on other humans that can and we wear their jerseys and sneakers because we  wish we had the ability to do what they do. But at the end of the day we can not. Professional sports is a business. The business side of sports sometimes gets overlooked by the fans but this part is the most important part for the athletes. The athletes are paid millions of dollars but most of them do not know what to do with that much money and they usually run out of it within the first couple of years of their contracts. I believe that the owners of the different sports teams benefit the most from the money standpoint because of the way they use the athletes to fill the seats of their stadiums with fans.

Graduation Day...Or Not

Posted by William Derry in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 3:53 pm
Today is my graduation day and my parents are very excited. The only problem is I’m not graduating this semester. This is my seventh year in college and I have not completed my bachelors degree yet. Furthermore, I have not told my parents the bad news yet. What am I going to do? I must tell my parents that I am not going to graduate this semester.

I call my mom on my cell phone but there is no answer, then I try to call my dad, still no answer. Wait. They must be flying to Ohio, not driving from Wyoming. I get out of bed and brush my teeth, then take a shower. As I put my watch on I remember that I am suppose to pick my parents up from the Port Columbus International Airport at 11:15 AM. I grab my keys and head towards the door, then I remember that I told my friend Sam Lowe that I wanted to study with him for our finance exam at 5:00 PM. I don’t know if I should go study with Sam or if I should go pick up my parents from the airport.

Before I do anything, I have to get something to eat. I walk to the dining hall. Should I grab a breakfast sandwich or should I just get a donut? I’ll get the donut. I pay for the donut at the cash register and walk out of the dining hall. I walk back to my dorm room and sit down on my bed and look at the ceiling. Then I said to myself, “you just need to tell your parents what’s really going on and see what they think you should do.” At 12:15 pm I hear a knock at my dorm room door and when I opened the door, my parents were standing on the other side of the door and my mom says to me, “hello Brad White.” I invite my parents inside my dorm room and ask them how their flight was from Wyoming. They both said fine, and they asked me how school was going. I said, “hey where is my friend Sam?” They said he went to go park his car and said he would be right up. I stare at my parents knowing what they are waiting for me to say and then Sam walks in.

Sam looks at me and says, “what’s up dude”. I look back at him and say, “what are you doing in my dorm room and why are you here?” Sam said, “I’m not going to miss the biggest day of your life.” I stare at Sam and think to myself, does he not know that I am not graduating today? I look down at the ground and think about how I can say this in a way that my parents will understand that I am trying to get a college degree. My mom says to me, “what is it?” I tell her that I am thinking about how long it has taken me to get this degree and all of the memories I have at this college throughout all of these years. My dad says to me do you just want us to meet you at the graduation and we can talk there?

“No!” I scream. I have to tell you all something. I’m not graduating today and my dad says, “what do you mean?” I said,  “I mean I am not going to graduate today.” My mom sits down on the couch and just takes a deep breath. I tell my friend Sam to give me a moment with my parents and I’ll talk to him later. My dad asks me, “how long have you known that you were not going to graduate today?” I say to him, “I have known since the beginning of the semester and I wanted to tell you sooner dad but I needed to tell you in person face to face.” I look my mom and dad in the eye, and say that I am going to transfer to Western Wyoming Community College and leave Ohio State University. My dad looks at me and says, “are you sure” and I look at him and say, “yes I’m sure dad.” I tell my dad, “that I will come back home to Wyoming in the next week and that I will move back home with him and my mom.” My dad gives me a handshake and my mom gives me a hug and they walk out of dorm my room.

The Language Within Corporations

Posted by William Derry in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 3:34 pm

In the world there are many different types of corporations and these corporations have a number of different occupations that need to be filled with specialized workers. The CEOs of these companies are very different from the interns of of these companies. Furthermore the language is very different between the CEO and intern. In corporations there are things that you should not say and do in the office. In corporations there is a definite qualified language that is used and a definite way to act in a corporation. Overall, each corporation has it’s own qualified  language and each corporation chooses to add or subtract from that qualified language.

In a corporation there is a CEO and there is an intern and other occupations within the organization. The CEO is the leader of the corporation and the boss. An intern is at the bottom of the corporation and learns from the company workers. The intern can learn more about that corporation from the people who work there because they know the business the best and they have the time to teach the intern about the company. Furthermore an intern has a different language than the CEO. Kevin Plank who is the CEO of Under Armour said “There’s an entrepreneur right now, scared to death, making excuses, saying, ‘It’s not the right time just yet.’ There’s no such thing as a good time. I started an apparel-manufacturing business in the tech-boom years. I mean, come on. Get out of your garage and go take a chance, and start your business”. Frederick W. Smith who is the CEO of Fedex said “Leaders get out in front and stay there by raising the standards by which they judge themselves – and by which they are willing to be judged”. Steve Ballmer who is the CEO of Microsoft said “Great companies with the way they work, first start with great leaders”. Overall, the language between a CEO and an intern is very different because an intern has not learned how to communicate with others, unless the intern knew before they came to the business.

One way to be successful in a corporation is being able to speak professionally and to be able to talk to all kinds of people. This will help you be successful in a corporation because you will be able to interact with other businessmen and businesswomen. One corporation that has a set language is Exxon Mobil. One reason is if you do not know anything about the gasoline business you will not be able to sell your product to other gasoline corporations. Exxon Mobil has many terms that they use in their corporation such as proved reserves, prime product sales, proved reserves replacement ratio and total shareholder return. Proved reserves are the amount of resources that can be recovered from the deposit with a reasonable. Prime product reserves are business’s expenses from the materials and labor it uses in production. Proved reserves replacement ratio is a metric used by investors to judge the operating performance of an oil and gas exploration and production company. The total shareholder return is the total return of a stock to an investor. Overall, the way knowing the terms of the company you work for is very important.

The most important part of a presentation is the speaker and how they present their idea to their audience. According newyork speechcoaching.com, “the coach would use methods from drama and would use a wide variety of methods to helps you become a better speaker”. The language and the tone that the speaker uses is very important also and will make the presentation better. According to silvermanspeechcoach.com, “there are four steps to a successful presentation which are the goal, the challenge, the solution and the result”. Overall, the key to presenting your idea is to have the knowledge of the idea and the skills to let your audience understand what you are talking about.

The reason why language is so important is because it is the way other businessmen and businesswomen respond to you and the way you get noticed by other corporations. Furthermore language is important because if you do not speak the same way as your coworkers or your boss you will not be able to work on many group projects and you will not be able to get your work done. Also you would not be hired if you were not able to speak the language of the corporation and you would probably not be able to volunteer for that corporation. The way that this all would be learned would be to go to business school and then to become an intern at a corporation and to learn from the workers there. This job would not be paid but would be worth the time because it would pay off in the future. The way to become the CEO of a corporation would be to work your way up the system and to learn from your superiors about the corporation. Overall, there are not many people who start off as the CEO of a company they usually have to work their way up the system for many years.

All CEOs start off somewhere and most have to work their way to the top of the corporation. To become the CEO of a corporation you must have the drive to get yourself to that position because everyone wants to become the CEO but not everyone wants to do the work to become the CEO of a corporation. The CEO position is also gained by being able to speak professionally in the office. This position must be earned it is not given. Overall, you must have a drive to become a CEO and you must be ready to do the work to become the CEO of a corporation.

Element Print

Inquiry: This project made us think about different ways to carve our block of linoleum. We all had to choose what we wanted are drawing to be on our block of linoleum.

Research: For this project we had to research the element that we were given and find information that could be turned into a drawing. Furthermore we had to find the atomic number and the symbol for our element.

Collaboration: Throughout this project we all talked about what we thought would be cool for our drawing for our print. We also talked about the different ways to print our drawings on the final piece of paper.

Presentation: For this project we had to print our drawings on a final piece of paper. We also had to take a picture of our final print and had to make sure that the photo had the proper lighting.

Reflection: At the end of the project I thought about what I could have done differently for this project. Furthermore I looked at my final product and made sure that it was the product that I wanted.

PAYBACK TIME BOOK REVIEW

Posted by William Derry in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 10:43 am

PAYBACK TIME BY CARL DEUKER

This book is primarily about sports but not fully. This book is also about uncovering a secret and making a great story out of that secret. The main character in this book Daniel (Mitch) True is getting ready to go college and plans on uncovering the biggest story of his life in his senior year of high school. This book PAYBACK TIME received a one star review from Booklist that said “ Definitely one for the top shelf ”. The book PAYBACK TIME received A JUNIOR LIBRARY GUILD SELECTION.

The book PAYBACK TIME is a book about a high school journalist named Daniel (Mitch) True who wants to be the editor of his school newspaper and he wants go to Columbia University to study journalism. An important character in the book is Kimi Yon. She is the sports photographer for the school newspaper and is Mitch's newspaper partner. Mitch and Kimi worked on the sports section of the newspaper together throughout the school year. Another important character in this book is Angel Marchial. Angel is a football player who is a new kid at Lincoln High school and new to the football team at the school. The conflict in this story is Mitch and Kimi are trying to uncover a secret about Angel Marchial who transferred from a different high school. My favorite character in this book is Daniel (Mitch) True. The reason being is Mitch grew throughout the book. Mitch did not have things go his way all of the time but that did not stop him from continuing to try to uncover this story. Furthermore Mitch had a weight problem and throughout the book he lost a lot of weight because he did not give up or let anyone stop him. I believe that readers should take self motivation away from this book. I believe that this book gives good examples about self motivation. Furthermore readers should take away hope from this book. The reason being is that Mitch did not always have the answer to all of the questions that he had about Angel but he knew that at the end of the football season he would have some information to write a story.

I could relate to Angel Marichal. One reason is I have been in his situation about starting on the bench and eventually starting in the starting lineup. The second way I could relate to Angel is because of his quiet leadership. I understand at first why he did not want to be one that talked a lot. Furthermore I can relate to Angel being the one to sit at the end of the bench and not be getting into the game. The mindset that Angel had was remarkable because he played well but he only played a little and would not be warmed up when he was put into the game. This gave him a disadvantage because he was not warmed up and was not prepared to be in the games.

I did like the book. The book was great and had very interesting themes. One strength of the book was the imagery. When I was reading the book I could imagine the football field and I could imagine the energy from the sports fans in the stadium. Another strength from the book was the action in the book. This book had a lot of football play by play detail and kept the reader interested throughout the book. One weakness from this book was the ending. The ending did not close the book properly. The ending could have been better. Another weakness in this book was the detail of certain places in the book. For example where Mitch had gone running was not described well and was hard to imagine what it would look like in real life. I would change the ending of the book. The reason being is the ending was not what I expected and could have closed the book better. The author left it up to the readers imagination but I would have liked to have a clear ending at the end of the book.

I would recommend this book to other people. I believe that this book is

for everyone and that probably could take something away from this book. I

definitely recommend this book to sports fans. This book has great play by

play detail and really makes the reader feel like they are at the game. Another

thing that this book has is a theme about self motivation. In this book the main

character Daniel (Mitch) True deals with a weight problem and he tells

himself that he must get into better shape so he could be healthy. At first

Mitch was losing weight to impress Kimi Yon but at the end he realizes that

he was doing it for himself.

William Derry: You and the World Blog post #3

Posted by William Derry in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 8:09 am
For my third you and the world blog post we had to do our agent of change portion of the project and I wrote a letter to the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare. My you and the world topic is the financial aid system. I wanted to learn more about what they do and I wanted to know how I could help to make a difference in the department.

For my second You and the World blog post I talked about the survey that I made and how much I learned from the results of the survey. Furthermore I learned new facts about the financial aid system. Click here to see my second You and the World blog post. For my first You and the World blog post I introduced my topic and I wrote about the numbers behind the financial aid system. Furthermore I gave my reasoning behind choosing the topic that I did. Click here to see my You and the World blog post number two.

My process was much different than I excepted. My first idea for my agent of change portion of my blog post was to go volunteer at the Pennsylvania department of welfare but I was not able to make that happen so my next idea was to send a letter and to find out more about it and to find out how I could make a difference in the department. I believe that I did not find out as much information as I wanted but I did learn some things. The one big problem that I had was not being able to volunteer at the Pennsylvania department of welfare and the way I fixed that problem was by sending a letter to the Pennsylvania department of welfare and finding out more information.

I believe this project has taught me to never give up on something. At some points of my process I did not know what I was going to do but then I came up with the idea of sending the letter the Pennsylvania department of welfare. I believe that this project has made a difference in my community. The reason being is now that the letter has been sent to the Pennsylvania department of welfare they now know that people do appreciate what they do and are willing to help. I see myself as a leader but I also see myself as someone who can definitely learn more. I do not know everything I want to know about the Pennsylvania department of welfare and I would love to learn more about the department. I will take many things from this project. One thing that I will take from this project is my new learning of Pennsylvania department of welfare and all that I have learned from doing this project. I have also learned a bunch about myself. When I started this project I did not know what I would learn about Pennsylvania department of welfare but at the end of this process I was very pleased and I knew much more about the department at the end of this process.

William Derry: Negative Space Reflection

Posted by William Derry in Art - Freshman - Hull on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 9:03 am
Negative space in art is the space between two images. Negative space is the space around an image. Furthermore negative space is taking an image and mirroring the image on another piece of paper. I found negative space in my cut out picture by looking for empty space in my drawing and trying to mirror the picture on the other piece of paper. In my still life drawing I found negative space by trying to see the two images as two complete different images.  My still life drawing had an chair, three stools and a hand truck. The three objects were close together but I tried to draw them separately. I found space between them by doing that. It helps an artist to see negative space because it helps the artist get their point across. What I mean by this is the artist can make the drawing more realistic by having negative space in their drawing. Furthermore the artist wants the viewer of their drawing to focus on a certain thing in their drawing. I believe that seeing drawings in negative space enhances the drawing. The reason being is the drawing comes more to life and it makes the drawing better. Overall, negative space is important to making a great drawing.

"Final Perspective Drawing"

Posted by William Derry in Art - Freshman - Hull on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 8:50 am
One thing that I specifically learned while doing this project is that they’re many ways to draw a one point perspective drawing. They’re is not just one way to draw a one point perspective drawing. Learning that they’re is not just one way to draw a one point perspective drawing made me want to learn from my mistakes and to erase when a line was not straight. This also made me draw better drawings. If I did this assignment again I would take more time to add detail. I would add color and would add more detail to my tables and to my ceiling. I would do this because I believe that it would make my drawing better. I believe that the detail would make the drawing more realistic. My advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing is to not be afraid to erase. The reason being is that when you erase you make the line better than it was before. Another thing that I would advise them to do is to make sure that every line that is drawn is drawn back to the center point to make sure that all of the lines are straight. The last thing that I would advise them to do is to not stop drawing when doing a one point perspective and just stick with it. The resource that help me most was the online slideshow of the one point perspective drawing. This helped me the most because I learned a lot from the slideshow. I believe that this slideshow taught me how to do a one point perspective drawing.

Macbeth Creative portion

Posted by William Derry in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 11:40 am
This is going to be a project info and reflection post about the story of Macbeth. This project is a collection of journals about the creative extension about Lady Macbeth and the up rising of Lady Macbeth in the creative piece. " Lady Macbeth was in charge at the beginning but lost control at the end"

At the beginning of my process I wanted to write something about Lady Macbeth and how she could gain her power back from Macbeth. But then I realized that I had a Macbeth quote and then I had to incorporate Macbeth in this creative portion. I knew that I wanted to do journal entires for my creative portion.

Some of the difficulties that I had from doing the project was how long I wanted each journal to be. I was writing and I wanted to make sure that I incorporated all of my quotes in the journals so what I tired to do was to put my quotes at the end of the journal entries. The way I overcame this was to give all of my information about the journals and then tie my quotes back to the information that I gave at the beginning of the journal entry. Another thing that I had difficulty doing was getting started. I had an idea and I just did not start when I should have. I ended up just writing the journal entires all at the same time. I overcame this by just writing it all out at one time.

The thing that I am most proud of doing in this project is how different I wrote the journals. I was surprised that I had use the quotes from my benchmark in a whole different way. I built this creative portion off of my quotes and made the story around the quotes. I was also surprised on how in detail I went and made sure that the characters that I started off with were the characters that I finished the story with.

If I was given the chance to to change something I would change the way I had Macbeth in the story. The part that I would change about Macbeth would be to make him have a dream about what was going on in his house instead of it really happening in real life. I believe that would have made the story better and would give the story a different feel to it.

The things that I learned from my colleagues were that they're so many ways to present Macbeth and they're not just one way to present Macbeth. I also learned that it is not just the way your project looks but it is the way you present it to others that makes a huge difference.

I learned that I can write creative stories and I can incorporate quotes in my creative stories. I also learned that I could have used more pictures or some type of photo in my creative piece. I learned a lot from doing this creative piece.

This creative writing is six pages long and has five journals in it. The title of this creative writing is "Macbeth, Lady Macbeth Returns". Macbeth signs each journal at the end with a different signature.

William Derry: You and the world Blog post #2

Posted by William Derry on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 2:06 pm
In my second blog post I have found new information about my topic. My topic is the financial aid system in the world. In blog post number one I talked about the why we were doing the blog posts and talked about different facts ways the financial aid system works. To see blog post number one click here. Blog post number two is about the new information I have found and the a new way I used to find my information. Last of all, I have learned how to use a new way to find information.

I have found new information about the financial aid system in the world. One new thing that I have found out is what other people think about this topic. I took a survey about the financial aid system in the world. To see my survey click here. One of the four questions that I asked was who was the president of the United States when a reform law was signed to give control of financial aid back to the States? I thought this was an hard question to answer but most of people who took the survey were close to answering the right answer. The one question that all of the people who took the the survey answered was the one that asked what do you think are the factors of being eligible for financial aid in the United States of America? This question was used to see what people thought about the factors of receiving financial aid. Overall the survey went well and It was a great way to find new information.

The survey was a great way to get new information. I believe that the survey added to my understanding of the issue. The information that I received from the survey was great because I was able to understand what other people thought about the issue. I now understand what people know about the issue. Furthermore I now know that the survey was a great idea and it worked out well.

I have personal opinions about the issue. My first opinion about the issue is that the financial aid system in the world can definitely improve. Click here if you would like to visit the Pennsylvania public welfare website. Also I think the financial aid system in the world is a great thing to have and I believe that people who have taking advantage of the system and used the assistance when they did not really need it. Last of all, I believe that the financial aid system in the world will improve and get better.

They’re are many things that I am still wandering about. One thing is how can I help the financial aid system get better? The second thing that I am still wandering about is what new information I will find while I am researching about this issue. The third and last thing that I am still wandering about is why the financial aid system works the way it does. I believe that the process to receive financial aid is too long and should be done quicker.

The thing that I am thinking about doing for my agent of change blog post number three is to volunteer at my local financial aid office. I want to help them in any way I can. I would like to go to the local financial aid office and learn more about what they do there on a daily basis. Furthermore I would like to learn about ways for everyone to help with this issue. To visit the  Overall I want to learn more about the financial aid system and how I can make a difference.

Finally Free book review

Posted by William Derry on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 5:51 am
 Finally Free book review

The authors of the book Finally Free are Michael Vick, Brett Honeycutt and Stephen Copeland. I heard of this book from an post game interview I watched of Michael Vick. I also learned about the book when I searched on good reads for sports books. The book Finally free is an autobiography about Michael Vick.  The main character in the book Finally Free is Michael Vick. In the book Michael Vick talks about his life and his up rising and falls. There is a conflict in the book Finally free. The conflict is Michael Vick was dealing with something and no one knew about it and he would not tell anyone. Michael Vick hid the problem from so many important people in his life. This one problem affected Michael Vick’s entire life. My favorite character in the book Finally Free is Michael Vick. Michael Vick is my favorite character in the book because I love the way he has matured and grown up. Furthermore he has learned from his mistakes and now he is has gone around the country to talk youth about making good choices. I believe that readers should take away a few things from this book. One thing being to make good choices in life. The second thing being to be a family oriented person and to take care of your family first. The third thing being to do things right the first time. The fourth and last thing that people should take away from this book is to take advantage of second opportunities if you receive them and make the most of them. I could relate to one character in the book. That one character being Michael Vick. I believe that we have similarities. Michael Vick’s grandmother was an important person in his life and my grandmother is an important person in my life. Also we both like the game of football and sports. Furthermore we are both hard workers. We both work very hard in everything we do. I have done some of the things that Michael Vick has done such as play sports and volunteering at different places. I have felt some of the ways Michael Vick has felt such as when playing sports. When playing sports you want to win every game and with it when you lose you get really mad. Furthermore when you lose you want to find out what you did wrong and what you can do better to win the game the next time. Another thing that I have felt that Michael Vick has felt is with Michael Vick he went to the Boys and Girls club of America when was younger and I go to Boy Scouts so they are kind of similar because they both keep you doing things that are productive. They also teach life goals and the way to live a healthy life. I do like the book Finally Free. I believe that this book has many strengths. One being the message. That if you receive a second chance take full advantage of it. The second being the quality of the detail and the information of the book. The third and last being the change from the beginning of the book to the end and how Michael Vick matured through the years. Their are also some weaknesses in the book. One being that the book was not long enough.  The second being that their were not enough statements from other people in the book. The third and last thing is the book did have enough about Michael Vick’s childhood. In the book Finally Free one thing that I would change would be the length of the book. I would have made the book longer and I think that their was more information to talk about in the book. I would recommend this book to other people. I believe that this book is a good book and is very informative. I would not recommend this book to everyone. I believe that this book is for a certain type of person. I believe people who have very strong opinions against Michael Vick should not read this book. I think that this book is more to motivate people who have second chances and how they can take full advantage of them. Furthermore this book is for Michael Vick fans and people who support him and want to know more about him. Also what Michael Vick went through. Overall this is a good book and I recommend to others to read.

Media Fluency

Posted by William Derry in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 9:28 am
The reason I made the first slide was I wanted to give the audience a sense of what I like to do. I wanted them to know what meant a lot to me and the thing that I like the most. The thing that influenced me was the  Zen presentation. The presentation really helped me to fully understand how to create the first slide. I put all of the pictures in the position they are in because I wanted them in that place. I made my name in that font size because I wanted it to be big. I put the font in that color for a reason. I used different colors in the pictures because I thought using different colors would make the slide better. I also thought that using the different pictures sizes would be best for the slide. Last of all, I made these decisions because I thought they would be best for my slide.

Since creating my first slide I have learned even more about making slides. I changed my slide completely. The reason being I had way too many photos on my first slide and I did not use presentation Zen correctly. I feel as though having too many photos is not good and does not work. I learned a whole lot from seeing others present their slides. I learned a lot about presentation Zen from others presenting as well because they used presentation Zen well. Furthermore I wanted my slide to be my best work and I believe that my second slide is better than my first slide. Overall I believe that my second slide is much better than my first slide.

William Derry: You and the world Blog post #1

Posted by William Derry in English 1 - Dunn on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 10:17 pm

My name is William Derry. In english class we were told to pick an issue that we cared a lot about. The issue that I chose was about the financial aid system in the world and we do not contribute to the the financial aid system it will run out. The reason I chose this issue was because I wanted to know more about the financial aid system and how I could help change the financial aid system for the better.

My main reason for researching about the financial aid system is to find out more about it and find a way to help the system improve. Many people do not not know but there are 2.6 billion people in the world who live on less than two dollars a day and nearly eighty percent of those people do not have access to a bank account. The people who are affected by this use jewelry and sometimes use livestock instead of using cash.

Many people believe that foreign aid will end global poverty. This may be true. Many people die from not having enough money for medicine, food and other supplies that people need to survive. Foreign aid could help and it could not help. We need to find a way to help people who do not have money to afford food, medicine and other supplies. There has to be a way.

The United States welfare system started in the 1930s during the great depression. The United States Government created the welfare system because of people or families who do not have any or a little bit of income. The United States welfare system has been lead by the United States government ever since. A big problem with the United States welfare system is that people would not apply for jobs because they just wanted the aid from the government to live off of. Also people would have more children and stay unmarried to get aid from the government. A reform law was signed by President Bill Clinton that gave control of the welfare system back to the states.

A book about the United States social welfare system.

There are many factors that decide whether you are eligible for the State welfare system. One of the factors is the person’s gross and net income. Another factor being the size of the family and any serious problems such as medical emergencies, pregnancy, homelessness or unemployment. For each person who is applying for financial aid a case worker is assigned to find out if the person is eligible for the welfare program. They will also find out which benefits you will given.

The caseworker will find out which benefits you will given. There are many types of welfare available for the people. Since the US government gave back the control of the welfare system back to the states each state has their own requirements. Most states offer the basic aid such as health care, food stamps, child care assistance, unemployment, cash aid, and housing assistance.

The way to apply for a welfare program one must contact the local Human Services Department. An appointment is made with a caseworker. The caseworker will give a list of required documents needed at the appointment. Documents that are usually asked for are proof of income, ID, and utility bills or other proof of residency. Once an appointment is completed a case worker will review all required documents, applications, and information provided at the meeting. They will use this information to determine eligibility and how much aid you should receive.

Derry, William, lucidchart, home network

The Local Area Network is verizon. The devices on the internet connection are a macbook, desktop, xbox 360, iPad,iPod and a printer. I learned a lot about networks. Such as what networks look like. Also I learned that having a home network is not cheap. Furthermore not everyone has a home network. I also learned that the internet works better from above. That meaning if you have your modem on the top floor of your house the internet would work better. This is true because internet falls down. I think that everyone should have an home network. Also having a home network is useful because you do not have to rely on another person's home network. It is better to have your own network.
