Eyewitness Testimony

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in Science And Society - Best - E on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 5:08 pm

Let's say a truthful man was at the bank and he saw a robbery take place right in front of his eyes. Would you rely on that man for information about what they recall during that instance? I would expect this truthful man to tell the story as the way it happened and according to the article on Eyewitness by Hal Arkowitz, Scott O. Lilienfeld, jurors also heavily rely on information provided by eyewitnesses. Eyewitness testimony is a trusted source of information and has been that way for a long time. However, study has shown that eyewitness testimony might not actually be a reliable source of information. It’s apparently not a rare case that during these types of situations, people recall the wrong information. In 1984, a man named Kirk Bloodsworth was charged and sentenced to nine years in prison because the statements given by five eyewitnesses were very heavily weighted during the session. Years later, DNA testing proved him to be innocent.

Psychologists have found that when people recall memories, they’re alway changing the details of it. In the famous Lost in the Mall experiment, the subjects recalled information more detailed as time passed and 48% of what the subjects stated were false. It’s easy for our brains to implant memories that never occurred. Elizabeth Loftus, a cognitive psychologist, worked endlessly to prove how memories could be so distorted and richly wrong. She’s experimented numerous times implanting memories and studying its results, she states that sharing these information to learn how to prevent memory implant is better than covering it up. It has been reported that “73 percent of the 239 convictions overturned through DNA testing were based on eyewitness testimony.” Cases involving conviction of innocent people are 70% of the time rooted from eyewitness misidentification according to John Bohannon’s article on Science magazine. It is crucial that the justice system adjust and reconsider eyewitness testimony looking at these research and statistics.

There is the misconception about how the memory works and this truly creates our society to rely on eyewitness information causing many complications especially in our justice system. I think there needs to be more research and experiments completed to understand exactly how and why that occurs. As Loftus has stated, we need to work to protect ourselves from misleading preconceptions and uncover as much information about it as possible. Doing that will allow right judgement on cases like Kirk Bloodsworth.

Tenzin Chemi Tibet Capstone

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in Capstone - Martin - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 10:24 pm

Having been in America for over nine years now, I have always loved the diversity of culture and race within my surroundings. It’s fascinating hearing and seeing the colorful facet of varying cultures. However, it’s distressing when I tell people about my culture and where I’m from because they’re so unaware of it. A culture so rich and beautiful, yet so invisible to people. Also, to be frank, I did not know much about my culture and my country, Tibet, as well as I should have. Through this year long project, I wanted to reach out to people through digital media, an ubiquitous tool around the world, to teach about Tibet and to teach myself about its history.

I wanted to teach people about Tibet in a compelling method. I wanted to create something that people could easily access and understand. I aimed to produce work that was content rich and concise. So in order to meet all my requirements, I settled on publishing a website where I could aesthetically present the different components to my work. I’ve created three parts to my work and I have four pages on my website. My home page gives a brief background on Tibet and the project. The Identity page is where I’ve collected quotes from young Tibetans about what their definition of being Tibetan is. The History & Today page presents a two and half minutes long video I’ve put together from a Tibetan National Uprising Day protest in New York City and a slide show of powerful images taken during the protest. My final page, Cultural Preservation, presents a six minute video I’ve diligently worked to complete showing Tibet’s culture and the ways in which Tibetans preserve it today.

5 Minute of Science

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in Science And Society - Best - E on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 10:40 pm
Sarcasm is Good for You. Seriously

The Science in Sarcasm

A joint study carried out from Harvard, Columbia and the European Business school, INSEAD, recently in 2015 published their work on how sarcasm expands the creative mind. The highlighted statement of their research basically says that by using sarcasm, creativity is promoted through abstract thinking for both the speaker and the listener. And although sarcasm might cause conflict, especially when there is not a stable relationship between the two, the content of the sarcasm does not affect the increase of creativity. Constructing and understanding sarcasm involves an intricate and complex connections between different parts of the brain. But in general, the left hemisphere of the brain understands the literal meaning while the right take in the implied meaning of a sarcastic comment. Then the right ventromedial prefrontal cortex connects the two understandings and figures which meaning is meant.

Society

Sarcasm is often used in conversations. It's a way people can entwine humor into something more serious but often, it can cause conflict and hurt feelings. Workplaces discourage it’s use due to certain consequences it could led to. Communication experts and marriage counselors find this form of language destructive and disapprove it’s use while some others believe it’s pure meanness concealed. However, recent research allowing society to perceive sarcasm in a new light by presenting how it stimulates creativity has created news and talk. Now as we’re move forward into a modern time, the use of sarcasm is also becoming more widespread, but there are still those who adhere to its old beliefs.

Self

This topic stuck out to me because it’s interesting and it’s true. I’ve always seen sarcastic people to be very creative communicating their messages. So it makes perfect sense that using sarcasm exercises distinct parts of the brain and helps people be more creative. Concurrently, I also agree with people who find the language destructive, I can see and understand why sarcasm should not be used. There just needs to be more caution when using it. People should exercise communicating through creative remarks and make each other laugh.

Tenzin Chemi Q4 Advanced Art

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in Art Advanced - Hull - a1 on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 10:47 pm
In my first piece, I decided to recreate the Mona Lisa piece because I wanted go through my own experience to maybe see Leonardo Da Vinci's struggles in developing this prominent piece of art. The shading, drawing the hands and her face was the most challenging in my case. However, since my piece is not exactly the same as Da Vinci's, we might've had different challenges. My second piece was an abstract piece. Here I used paint to clash different colors and to make something that is totally up the the viewer's interpretation. In my third piece, I decided to do a still life drawing. I've always been interested in drawing these types of drawing so I thought why not create one. My last piece is a climate change collage. I wanted to make a collage on this specific topic because recently I've joined a program that focuses on climate change and the program has truly taught me to be aware and more curious about our environment. So as an artist I wanted to show my interest in it by creating that collage.

I enjoyed creating these new pieces. Each of them are something special to me because I have not done these types of drawings in these unique methods before. For my abstract piece, I just went with the flow by keeping my pencil on the paper and just drawing even when I was not sure where I was going next. For my self-portrait, it was very interesting drawing with india ink because I've never used it before. I was surprised by the fact that it was not as hard as I was expecting and it also turned out good in my opinion. Not only that piece but I thought my value piece turned out pretty cool too because I knew that it was going to be hard trying to have the perfect shading. However, it wasn't that bad and I liked the outcome of my work. In the basic shape project, it was fascinating how I had to draw my piece. It was yet another new experience for me to draw shapes to create an object. Then, for my final piece, the animal sketch, I really enjoyed applying two of the recent skills, shading/values and basic shapes, I'd learned to create this piece.

The Savage Force of Nature

Article:

A 40 ft storm surge with winds traveling at incredibly high speeds hit the port city of Coringa in Andhra Pradesh, India on November 25th, 1839. The city itself and twenty thousand ships and vessels destroyed. Approximately three hundred thousand people dead. This could be one the world’s most deadliest cyclone ever seeing it’s destructions.

The city being located near the mouth of the Godavari River on the southeastern coast of India, sea-borne trade thrived. Shipbuilding and repairing was a factor Coringa was well known for. However, this deadly cyclone has undoubtedly disordered the city and its daily functionings. Coringa once showed resilience after its first cyclone in 1789 that left about twenty thousand people dead. But the present wreckage has challenged their character of resiliency.

Tenzin Chemi Q2 Portfolio

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in Art Advanced - Hull - a1 on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 8:17 pm
This quarter, we were able to do some very interesting projects. Freedom in perspective played an important role in each of these pieces. The first project was creating a collage of whatever the artist desired. I decided to make a piece that represented culture. In this piece,  I knew I wanted to have patterns and different colors to show culture in my perspective, rich and colorful. However, I also wanted my piece to have simplicity in it's looks, so in the final product looks both colorful and simple. Our second piece was drawing fabric by shading and showing contrast to see the creases of the fabric. The third part of our project was to take a picture of something showing depth of field and then editing it on a given website. The final piece of the project was to pick a piece of writing such as a poem or a novel and illustrate something out of it. I picked my favorite poem called There, I still will be by Mirtha Michelle Castro Marmol and illustrated the poem in my perspective.

The poem goes:
I gave you the sun
But you wanted the moon.
When I gave you the moon,
You wanted the stars.
So I reached blindly,
for the most infinite stars,
And wrapped myself
Around each one of them,
Just for you.
The stars,
the moon and the sun combined,
Weren't enough for your fickle heart.
So I took my tears,
And made you a sea,
So you can sail the earth
And find the impossible treasure,
You constantly seek.
Yet every morning,
my sun will be there to wake you.
Every night, My moon will be there to calm you.
And if you ever need me,
Look amongst the stars,
Wrapped in each one of them,
There, I still will be.

Alexander Graham Bell

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in American History - Jonas - X on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 8:49 pm
I dedicated my NHD project on Alexander Graham Bell, a man who changed the future with his invention. He was the first person to create a telephone or he was the first person to receive the patent for creating the telephone. My thesis is: "Alexander Graham Bell lived his entire life with an effort to overcome and coexist with challenges as opposed to disregarding them. His challenges sparked ideas that began his progression in innovating. One of the most prominent technology now, cell phones, is due to his efforts to constantly think and innovate. Alexander Graham Bell has truly left a remarkable legacy that is evident in our daily lives."

My Art Pieces

Artist Statement (also included in slideshow):
Its exciting coming into a class where you have a lot of freedom, a freedom to create something in your perspective. There are so many choices to choose from, there are so many ways the given task could be handled and it’s all up to you and thats the beauty in an art class. Throughout this class so far, several unique pieces have been produced. The first task we received was to create a drawing on a large ceiling tile. What we wanted to draw was up to us, so whatever our creative little mind could generate and agree on was our ceiling tile. In my process of this task, I was not quite sure what I wanted at first but as I started thinking more deeper and I came to the idea of integrating my country, culture and religion to my drawing. In our next task or my next piece, I decided to draw a snowflake. The earlier day, I was left in wonderment by some of the intricate pictures of snowflakes and so I came to my conclusion of drawing a snowflake with my own intricate design. In the pumpkin assignment, I wanted to draw again but I did not want it to be a plain drawing, so I decided to make it a puzzle pumpkin. Instead of using one sheet of paper to draw the whole pumpkin, I drew it on four pages and when you put the four pages together, you get one scary pumpkin. Our final piece was a self-portrait in any medium. Here, something different I tried out was taking one color and using it in different shades to create details. Altogether, the four pieces of art I created, I am very proud of it!

Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in English 3 - Rami - E on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 11:27 pm

“Dangerous, sexy, romantic, and intense. I dare you to stop reading.” Tahereh Mafi, composes her ideas into words that brings out emotions of different kinds. A power to shake up the world, a touch that freezes the body, a feel that conquers the heart, the sentences on each page has quality, depth, and interest, your fingers will flip those pages without a rest. The precise amount of details and Mafi’s use of figurative language truly captivates the reader’s attention. Her writing embodies the definition of creative writing.

Unravel Me is a book filled with amusing plots that explores different ideas of reality in a fictional story. It narrates a story of a girl with a romance tale, a girl who faces conflicts, and a girl with a very special gift. Her name is Juliette. She possess a power like no other at the tip of her fingers. In a split second, her clenched fist can create an abyss and send the world trembling. But all that is just another reason why she is closed up from everyone else. It is in her least interest to hurt anyone. It seems to her that this power just hunts her and that it’s just another mishap in her life. The only good it has done is Adam, the one that sends her heart beating a skip too fast. This lethal power brought the two together but coincidentally it has created a trap there too.

The mood of the book is moderately dark and dejected, and dystopia may not be the most favored genre for certain people but the experience of reading this book is everything except that. Mafi makes the readers wonder how she has the power to develop such passionate feelings for this fictional story. She leaves the readers in wonderment and one of the main ways that she does that is through her descriptive words. Mafi’s descriptions are not just describing, they are another way to engross the readers and illustrate the perfect picture. She uses metaphors, personifications, the five senses and more when she is describing.

Throughout the book, Mafi presents unpredictable new situations but the storyline is solid and the composition is very unique. One of those unique qualities being striking through words in the book. Unravel Me is sort of like Juliette's diary, everything is stated but certain words or sentences are crossed out with a thin line. These strikes serve a purpose in showing the readers how Juliette feels but doesn’t want to mention or admit those crossed out words to herself. Mafi also separates the book into many small chapters to keep the readers going. She writes in first person point of view to share the thoughts going on in Juliette, the main character’s mind. She utilizes vivid sensory language to send chills down your spine and make you feel. The structure of this book is an integration of all these techniques.

A major principle of this book lies in learning how to cope with obstacles. All throughout the book Juliette is facing some type of problem, either its the feeling of loneliness, the fear of hurting someone or loving someone. Each of these internal and external conflicts help her progress and learn about herself. She transforms from a shy, antisocial teenager to a brave, confident young lady. These points in transformation are points where she decides to try out something different. As the reader, these points are very clear because of the contrast between her action and her personality. Mafi does a great job emphasizing these parts as well.

Shatter Me and Unravel Me are the first two novels in a trilogy about Juliette. This series by Tahereh Mafi is a New York Times and a USA Today bestselling series. Mafi wrote in the back of her book, “when unable to find a book, she can be found reading candy wrappers, coupons, and old receipts.” That maybe a source or inspiration to her creative writing.

Overall, the book is amazing. There are so many things that happened in the book you just have to read it and experience it. Discover love, hate, and power all in one and see Juliette’s journey throughout the book. Unravel Me is made up of seventy three chapters and each of those seventy three chapters serve a purpose in enhancing the storyline by giving the readers a better understanding of what’s going on. Anyone would enjoy it. But specifically people who enjoy romance stories and supernatural characters, so if you’re one of those people, go check it out!

Title: Unravel Me

Author: Tahereh Mafi

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers

Date of publication: 2/5/13

Number of pages: 461

Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian, Romance

Creative Part:

  • The found poem, Juliette, touches the different points the author and the narrator presents in the book in a few simple phrases extracted from the book. Juliette outlines the book, it mentions the main character/ the narrator, Juliette’s supernatural power, her feelings throughout the book and her love story.

Found Poem:

Juliette

My blood, a million degrees below zero

The earth fissures under my fingers

I have the power … to destroy everything.

So, says society, I am a monster

I’m buried 50 feet underground

Everyday, I stare at these 4 walls

I'm never quite certain whether or not I'm actually alive.

My skin and bones craving warm affection.

“Juliette,” he says

he mouths the name,

barely speaking

he’s pouring molten lava into my limbs

Never knew I could melt straight to death.

2

4

6 seconds

The air is still.

My skin is scared.

“It’s never been a secret. I want you,” he whispers and letter by letter he presses the words into my skin.

Discovering Art History (pg22-73)

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in Art Advanced - Hull - a1 on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 10:45 pm

1. Acrylic paints has become a very popular media because of its versatility. It's able to adhere to different types of surfaces such as wood, glass, paper, masonite, cardboard etcetera. It can be thinned with water, its easy to clean up and it drys fast. Acrylic can be applied both thick and thin. I haven't used too many painting and drawing medias but the ones I have used are mostly basic ones. Those include, paper and pencils. However, I have also used charcoal, paint and canvases before.

2. In sculpting, additive means to put a piece together and subtractive is when you take something away from your piece. A medium that is often additive is steel, bronze is casted, mosaics and furniture are modeling but furniture is also subtractive.

3. Duane Hanson's Football Player is a sculpture made from liquid silicone rubber. He uses real life models to help create an exact likeness of his model.

4. Vermeer emphasizes light in his Officer and Laughing Girl by adding the open class window and showing contrast in this piece. He shows the different reflected lights and the different shades of shadow.

5. In Tiepolo's Adoration of the Magi, contrast is really used well to create the viewer's eyes to follow the direction that the artist wants them to. There are so many details and things going on in this one piece but you can truly see where the artist wants you to focus. That specific part that the artist wants you to focus is very clear and colored in light colors for the viewer to see all the details.

Interpretation:

  1.    I select Romare Bearden's Eastern Barn to analyze. This piece really intrigues me because of the amount of interpretation that the viewer is left with. Its very unique because its not created through the regular process of getting something on the canvas. There are so many parts to it. The piece involves color, pasting paper, abstract, contrast and probably many more. In the end, the whole piece looks very different from other drawings and paintings. It looks different in a good way, leaving the viewer in curiosity and excitement. I would interoperate this as two men having a conversation and a little girl listening to it. All of this happening in a barn. I say that because of the title its given.
  2. In Nicholas de Stael, Landscape in Vaucluse, colors are mainly used to bring out the theme of the art. The intensity of the colors create the value in the art. Theres both light and dark value. Its also interesting how the artist decided to make it right next to each other, allowing us to really see the difference/ contrast in the painting.
  3. Edgar Degas' The Star, or Dancer on Stage uses cool colors. (pg65/49) In Joseph Mallord William Turner, Burning of the House of Parliament uses warm colors. This warm color comes form the fire. (pg66/50)
  4. The Raven sun clan mast with beak is symmetrical. William H. Johnson, Li'l Sis painting is asymmetrical.
  5. Mary Cassatt's Sleeping Baby is both a painting and a drawing but if I had to choose one, I would say its a painting. I say this because of the way the colors are presented on the canvas. How the colors mixes at the bottom of her dress. I feel like with drawing there would be more details. But I'm not saying that there are not lots of details in this picture of that, there is a good amount of detail in this picture. I say its a painting because when you look at the over all, it just seems like a painting.

A Closet of Mine

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 8:52 pm

The sprinkle of water with the warmth of the sun washed away the dirt on his skin. The dirt of the mud from practice. Football games were always a battle ground. A field filled with large men running and shoving each other to the ground. Nothing laid in the head besides the idea of victory and looking good in front of others that stand before them. Being the man in the game. Being the man in everything. Its all that he had trained for, to be the best man, to be the strong man, to be a man. Now, he stood six feet, two inches tall, a three hundred pound moving body of muscle. He looks perfect. People thinks he is perfect. He is perfect.

His face placed under the shower head, he closes his eyes. There was a feeling of impending interest. Something he couldn’t deny but tried to. He needed explanations for these feelings or he felt that these emotions needed a cure. There was no way he could just walk out of that room and ignore all these feelings. Being a young adult now, he thought he knew himself. But now confusion took over his whole existence. He knew people that had these feeling and came out to the world with them. He never understood those people. He had made remarks in public and laughed about those people.

There was a specific time he remembered. It was during a party in his high school years. One of his friend, a popular boy like him, came out of the closet. Everyone in the school seemed to be talking about him. Before he came out of the closet, all the other boys in the school wanted to be his friends. They just thought he was so cool. However, the next day when the news of his sexuality came out, things took a big turn. Opening his eyes to try not to think any further. The reflection of himself through the white tiles stared back at him.

Slowly, he inhaled the air and exhaled his emotions, twice. Looking straight into the reflection of his eyes, he started to speak.

“James? I’m with you. I’m sorry... I’m sorry I was with those guys laughing. I, this critic, this shameless, this monster, am sorry. I didn’t mean it, I didn’t know anything back then, I didn’t know myself. Call me nameless, I don’t deserve an identity for what I’ve said and done before. The guys I hanged out with, they were horrible, they will probably never learn to become someone as strong and awesome as you… No one understood about the type of life you lived during that time. No one! Their brains, my brain, were all sized down to a piece of nail, when it came to your situation. Yes, the earth was created for an atmosphere where every man could stand freely. But I’m sorry we made you cripple in fear.”

As his frustration built, dark clouds grew bigger above him. His thoughts balled up a feeling of uncertainty. He could not stop these thoughts from rolling through him.

“Urghhh! Why do I feel this way? Man!” He thought to himself. Am I gay?

The mist of the boiling water fogged up the mirror, the windows, the whole room, as he stood under the showering water, thinking.

“All those dirty looks, the scowling faces, the whispers of cutting words behind his back. Man! What were we all thinking?” The faint memory came back. He thought about how James’s friends and his best friends talked behind his back, including himself. He wasn’t James’s best buddy from the beginning, he knew that. However, they did consider each other as friends back when James didn’t announce he was gay and back when this infuriated, this nameless, this thought to be crazy person tried to figure out a part of himself.

There was a day which he clearly still remembered. It was about two days after James had said to everyone that he was gay. The news was fresh and it was the number one mostly talked about topic. Justin, one of James’s friend, started the conversation. “Its so hard to believe James is gay. I never would’ve expected it from a dude like him. Its weird, he’s weird. It just doesn’t suit him at all.” Every member in the circle jumped to say what they had to say. They all had their own remarks. Just knowing that James was gay, they categorized him. They put him down in the back of their head. They put him down in the back of their head just like this monster, this nameless person did.

A couple weeks after the hot topic news, James had made new friends. It seemed that he had gathered himself with people that understood him. Although that was true, there was a speck of feeling where James was still not fully accepted into that new society, nameless felt it in his guts and he still remembers that feeling. This specific, unpleasant feeling is what dreads him.

The hurtful intended rumors he had spreaded with the judgemental words were his pass. They were based off of his thoughts in the pass. The pass where he was a different person, or thought he was a different person at least. Now, it’s going to be a new story.

“My name is Robert Hardrick.”

He finally knew who he was. He wasn’t about to deny it any longer. Turning the head of the shower faucet, the water stops running down his skin and into the drain. He needed to stop this flow of actions and come out of the room. Come out of the closet.

Rolling Through Imperfectness

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 9:53 pm

See yesterday night, I decided to put my little brother’s perfect outfit together. He has no style, whatsoever. All he wants to do is play his dumb video games with his little friends and read books. He always wears the same gray t-shirt and the dull blue pants. So, you know, I had to put together his outfit. I want him to look good in public.

People would beg to be his friend after wearing what I’d put together. Everything was ready. I even told him how to style his ugly hair too. But then the next day, he wore his same old outfit! I was like, “What are you wearing? Go change! I told you to wear the outfit I put out yesterday.” He didn’t listen though. He had decided that he wanted to ignore me and leave out the door. How dare he, you know? I was trying to be nice and help him out, but he wants to ignore me? I was done. I had to take a deep breath. Who does he think he is? No one cares what I have to say, no one cares about me. I’m always trying to help you. I try to help everyone. Why do I always end up volunteering myself to be the shoulder you guys can lean on? Through every situation, I’m the one listening to all your b.s. I’m not saying I don’t want to be there, I’m want to. I want to listen to you guys, I want to care and understand for you guys but also, remember I still exist.

(After a little moment of silence). Well, I’m glad you guys aren’t in my spot. At least you guys don’t think about everything as much as I do. I hear all of them, you know. The words always stay in my mind. “Don’t talk to her, she’s mean, she’s crazy.” Blah blah blah. I try to take them all out of my mind because I know better. I know that people do and say things, things which might not be the most pleasant things to see or hear. I try hard to forget it. Its not easy though. Who do they think they are? Going around saying stuff about me. Its never easy to forget those actions. Everyday, I look at myself and I think to myself, I’m strong. I don’t cry. But I guess its not my day today to be strong. No one, not even my close friends seem to care about me. I just feel like hiding myself under the bed or disappearing into the sky.

I’m always trying to be the perfect friend, the perfect sister, the perfect person, listening and helping everyone out but you know what I realized? I learned that there isn’t a world where everything is perfect and revealing what you are feelings is okay. My brother wearing the same outfit everyday is okay. Life is hard, you will fail, not once but multiple times. You just have to pick yourself up and brush yourself off and stand strong.

The Changes

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Friday, November 8, 2013 at 9:37 pm

Eyes closed and sitting. Thoughts about random things started to run in my head. Slowly, I opened my eyes and I squinted at the large mirror, seeing the reflection of the shower curtains and the tiled walls. I blinked a few times to get used to the extra bright light. Then the door opens, my sister comes in to wash her teeth. A message comes out of my mouth to her. It was spoken through a native language in the United States. I didn’t notice it at first when the words spilled out my mouth. But a few minutes later, I started noticing that I was thinking about things and saying things in my head in English as well. I was surprised, but I felt a little bad about myself. A part of who I am and where I come from was starting to become faint. It never came to my mind that I would have this conflict. I feel as if that actually might be one of the main reason why this is happening to me.

For most of my childhood years I’ve lived in India. However, I am Tibetan. My family comes from a country called Tibet. My family and I lived in India surrounded by two unique cultures. My own, the beautiful Tibetan culture and the beautiful Indian culture.

My life in India can’t even be expressed in words now that I think back about it. Surrounded my friends and families all the time, I was always connected to the environment. I had a strong foundation at which I’d learned about my culture. Even though I didn't lived in India, I went to a tibetan school and I wrote, read and spoke Tibetan. There were many Tibetans living in the village where I lived, so I never forgot my language and cultures.

We’ve lived in India for a long time, so we did have certain words which were always said in hindi. Some of the common words that I thought were in Tibetan, were actually in Hindi. An example of it is the word “shoes.” I’ve always thought it was a tibetan word. My parents and all of my friends said it in hindi all time. However, we never really mixed phases of hindi and tibetan together when we were speaking, unless it was on purpose. My whole family spoke fluent hindi but they never mixed the two language. On a regular basis, my family spoke in tibetan when they were at home and when they were talking to a tibetan person. My friends also talked in tibetan, so I was the same as them. I continuously spoke tibetan unless the person I was talking to didn’t understand the language.

I’ve learned that the day I left India. The day I left half my family, my grandpa, grandma, aunts, cousins, and friends was the day I was a step further from my culture and language. It’s been about six and half years since I’ve came to America. Life here is so different and its crazy how much I’ve changed with it. Its also crazy how much my family has changed with it.

My sister speaks tibetan but she mixes it a lot with english just like me. As for hindi, both of us have difficulty speaking it, but we’re still able to understand. About thirty percent of the time my mom speaks english at home. She can still speak and understand Hindi very well, but she never uses it at home. My dad does not speak much english at home, he mostly always speaks tibetan. On the other hand, my little brother doesn’t speak tibetan at all. Luckily he can still hear and understand it. In addition to not speaking tibetan, he doesn’t speak or understand hindi.

I became distant to my language. I couldn't speak it anywhere because wherever I went, no one spoke tibetan. The only place I could speak it was at home. When I started school in America, I could only speak english if I wanted to communicate with someone. Thankfully, I was taught a little bit of english in India, so I wasn’t entirely clueless. I was able to build my vocabulary daily, I learned idioms, different ways to say things and I learned slang. I watched and listened to other kids speak to each other. It was one of my main ways that my new friends taught me english. Also, I remember my Esol teacher Ms.Kean. She was always cheerful and very supportive to all the students in Esol. She taught me a lot of new words. She taught me how to get through my first school year in America.

School wasn’t the only place where I learned english. My sister, Ngawang, would also teach me things. My little brother, Dzineon, Ngawang, and I would all bring new things from outside. As time passed, we lived with those new little things. They slowly changed us, day by day. Soon, Dzineon couldn’t speak tibetan anymore. When he spoke, he would say it in english and this somehow automatically made me speak back to him in english. So, I started speaking a lot of english at home and so did my sister.

In 2011, after being in America for four years, the tibetan society in Philadelphia decided to start Tibetan Sunday School for kids like my siblings and I. I learned that I had forgotten the most basic tibetan writing and I had forgotten how to read tibetan. So, I went to sunday school every week. Little by little, I started to be able to read and write in Tibetan again. As for hindi, I remember and understand the language by watching bollywood movies.

“Through lack of practice and not having others who speak it, I’ve lost most of the Pachuco tongue.” This was written in a passage named From Borderlands/La Frontera by Glona Anzaldía. Just like me, others who speaks more than one language and or had spoken more than one language, experiences situations like this. When you don’t speak a language for a long while, you tend to forget how to speak in it or it gets difficult. People don’t take the time to practice the language they know. We’re lazy, we get lazy. But when you have others who speak it around you, you never forget it. You don’t think of it as practice but we think of it as just talking.

Element Project

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in Art - Freshman - Hull on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 8:54 pm

Inquiry: Inquiry was used since I didn't really know much about my element. This project for me involved a lot of inquiry. I wondered things like what can I draw for my element and whats the atomic number of it.

Research: To start this project, we first needed to know about the element that was given to us. Research was used to help find out what things related with our element, so that it could be turned into a piece of art.

Collaboration: With our friends we helped each other by giving suggestions and better ideas. We worked together to make each of our art piece the best it could be.

Presentation: Our art piece will be presented on this blog and on the walls of our school, so we tried to make it nice and presentable. My art piece are professionally pictured.

Reflection: I had a lot of fun doing this project. We didn't just use pencils and papers, lots of cool things were given for us to use. I think my final product is really nice and I like it a lot.

Negative Space

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 11:13 am
A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

    B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing?

    C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

    D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Negative space is the shape surrounding the object your looking at. Usually when doing a normal drawing, first you would draw the object, but when drawing in negative space, you draw the outline of the object and color outside the lines, not inside. When you finish coloring the outside of the lines, the object will appear. I found negative space in both my cut outs and in my still life drawing. For the cut outs, I had a house picture template which was colored in black and white. I put my pink paper behind the template and I started cutting on the line where the two different colors, black and white met. When I finished cutting those parts, I began puzzling the pieces on my other orange paper. In the middle of the orange paper which lied horizontally, I added a vertical line where my art will change from negative to positive space. I thought of how exactly the things will look when the pieces of paper were added to show negative space. I noticed that things were suppose to be flipped when moved into the opposite side of my vertical line. Also, when I was doing my still life drawings, I first looked at the object and lightly outlined the lines of the object, then I colored the outside of those lines, so the object will be seen without really drawing it out.

Seeing in negative space helps an artist because it forms the object inside the artist's head but on paper, the object isn't specifically drawn. This type of art lets creativity be used in a different, unique way. This negative space enhanced my drawing because of how unusal it is. It lets me think outside the box and to better my art skills.

Final Perspective Drawing - Green 2013 perspective

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in Art - Freshman - Hull on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 7:31 pm

Doing this project, I have learned something really cool. A skill I’ve always wowed. I have learned how to draw in 3D. I never knew the technique and when others drew using this technique, I just gaped. Learning how to draw in one point perspective has made me a better artist. My art looks a lot more interesting and realistic. Learning this technique, I’ve become more advanced in this subject and I’ve also learned that hard work and determination pays off at the end. I got this piece of art created by myself, which I am really proud of. But if there was a chance to do this assignment again, I would first read the instructions clearly and use my class work time wisely. I feel like I tried to rush through some of the steps and thats why I messed up a lot. However, I’m glad that I didn’t give up. My advice for someone who is drawing something like this is to have goals, work your way towards them and don’t give up until you reach those goals. Use all the resources you have to make your drawing the best art you’ve ever drawn. I used rulers, the tiles of the floor to make straight lines, pencils, big erasers for my big mistakes, color pencils, and markers. All these tools together has helped me make an art that I call my finest.

Me gusta mucho mi escuela.

Media Fluency by Tenzin Chemi

Posted by Tenzin Chemi in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 6:43 pm

Using slides is a good way to do presentation. Its easy and simple. But there are certain ways of making it attractive and understandable to others. You have to put some thoughts into it, to make it look great, to make people just glence at it and understand the idea. To do this you have to make things big and bold, add pictures and contrast colors. In my tech class, we have been learning about how to create slides that are appealing. We were looking on websites that gave us tips and pionters on what a good slide looks like. This was a great way to learn and have great ideas to make a slide. Then we started making our own slides. A good, understadable, interesting, slide that people will actually like to look at.

Colors are the first thing people notice. So for my slide, I made the colors contrast and they also have repetition in it. These designs makes the readers be able to look at it quick and know whats there and understand it. Also, I wrote quick short words to explain a little of what the slide was about. My slide is a glance media, a reader will be able to undertand the idea within three seconds after looking at it. It’s unique and I made it catchy, by using big bold words and simple pictures. I used big and bold word on my disply because it helps grab attention and it also helps with guiding the viewer’s eyes. I made two of my words slanted as you can see in it, because the letters its self is a design, to make the slide different and memorable. A general principle I used for my slide is not adding to much text and having empty space. I used this principle because if theres a lot of text, the reader will instantly look away once they see it. My slide includes only one main point, so the theme is understood.

In conclusion, using slides helps pass messages across. It shows a visual and helps remember things better. Big and bold texts with images, many empty space and color contrast ect. These tips that I learned and used in my slide are good ways to do a presentaion. Its important to have these things. I also enjoyed making this slide that I did and I learned a lot about making slides. Next time, I am able to use all these special tricks to help me with what i’m doing, like if i was making a poster for persuading people to buy cookies that I’m selling, I could use these information. This information will also come in handy with my own class presentation. I am very glad that I learned about all of this. My design on my slide shows some of the awesome things that I learned.

                                                 Reflection

As you can see the difference from my first slide to the next one, I want to talk about what and why I made the changes I made. Though I didn’t get to go up to present my first slide and get constructive criticism about it. I still feel that I have a lot to change on my first slide. I learned more and more as each of my classmates went up to present. Each of them had lots of similar problems that I had also made on my slide. Since I didn’t get to go up, I started to give constructive criticism to myself, so that I could improve my slide to make it a great “glance media” slide. The first thing I changed was making the words bolded. Then, I really wanted to change the fact that my slide had lots of things on there. So I thought about it for a while trying to get an Idea. I looked through the google images. I saw a picture of a stick figure family. I looked at it and I knew it be perfect fitting into my slide. The contrast was there, the image wasn’t extra small that the pixels would be seen if made larger. The meaning I wanted was there, “family.” It was obvious.

I changed where my bolded name was, so that people slide their eyes through the letters. Once they see one part of the name, the first one or the last, they’ll see the other part. I made my heart sign and name really big. Then I added my stick family picture on to the slide. I made it larger and larger. I did instant alpha on the background of the family picture so that I don’t over lap the black part on any of my other things. On the other slide, I had family, country, and friends. I decided to erase the country and friends part because I didn’t really want to focus on more than one thing on my slide. Also because when you have a lot of things together on one page, people can’t just look at it once and understand the idea. Sometimes people just don’t even look at it because its a lot of things on there. This was kind of how I had mine for the first slide. It wasn’t as interesting and glance media type as I thought it was. Now, I understand what I did wrong. My new slide is a lot more fascinating and there a lot of the things that are in it that is required to have a great slide.

Chemi, Tenzin-Lucidchart, homenetwork

My internet comes from the verizon company. It comes in as a phone cord and you connect it with the wireless modem which I connect to the desktop. Then the modem wirelessly connects to other laptops and Iphone and Ipod Touch in the house. I learned to tell the difference between some of the cords and I also, learned that there is something like the internet cloud or an actual machine in space, which holds all the information that we put in our computer. I was surprised by that fact because I never thought of my information being help in space like that. What I think that other people need to know about having an ISP/Home network is the structure of my internet chart, like where all the things connect and how it is connected.
