Taming the Shrew compared to The Birdcage

In The Birdcage and in Taming the Shrew, the people and couples that are presented show various similarities and differences. In The Birdcage, one couple stands out among the rest. But for one reason, they are are both men. Albert and Armand both run a Drag Queen show in South Miami Beach, but they are also together and this may seem a bit awkward to other people. In some parts of the movie, Albert and Armand use deception to make it seem like they are friends and not together, other times they use honesty and take pride in being together. While in the Taming of the Shrew, the elaborate plan to take both Bianca’s and Katherine’s hands in marriage shows a lot of deception tactics and honesty seems like a thing of the past, Almost as if it does not exist then.

The Birdcage and The Taming of the Shrew contrast dramatically because of the ways that the couples present themselves. They are more different than similar because one uses honesty more than deception. Over the centuries people started caring more about each other than money. The Birdcage reflects this belief because the couple really cares about being together.

“Be patient, gentlemen. I choose her for myself. - I will be sure my Katerine shall be fine.” (Act 2. Sc. 1 Pg. 97 NOTE: My ESP allowed me to choose this quote by calling on the cosmos to help me find the perfect quote and I opened the book and the Cosmos lead me to this quote.)

The quote above justifies the deception in the Taming of the Shrew fully because Petruchio’s speech is complete deception without a hint of honesty.

“And woo her with some spirit when she comes! Say- But here she comes––and now, Petruchio, speak.” (Act 2. Sc. 1 Pg 87)

This quote shows how Petruchio uses deception to get what he wants. He lies to get Katherine to like him and also lies to the father about invalid deals that never existed in the first place. Petruchio is like me, I like to mix Lies and rumors into stories full of deception. I can brew the most believable lies but also the most extreme tales. Petruchio is a cunning liar, twisting people’s words, beliefs and thoughts into stories of deceptions and false realities

968full-the-birdcage-screenshot
968full-the-birdcage-screenshot

The screenshot above shows the deception in The Birdcage but instead of continuous deception as in Taming of the Shrew, it’s deception with redemption. Albert pretends to be the mother, which is deception, but then when the real mother shows up, it becomes deception with redemption. Which then becomes honesty and that is the main difference between Taming of the Shrew and The Birdcage.

003
003

The second screenshot shows the scene where the elaborate plan of marriage takes place, Val is getting married with a Senator’s daughter and Val needs Albert to take a vacation for a few days until the marriage is over. Because the Senator is very conservative and gay people back then were not accepted as well. To avoid a long explanation of the plot, the senator’s ally dies in bed and the news are all over him, and his safe haven is the drag club where the senator’s family and Val’s families are meeting. The senator does find out that Albert and Armand are gay and that is where deception with redemption stands out the most.

Taming of the Shrew is a play of complete deception without redemption while the movie, The Birdcage is deception with redemption. This also shows that honest is more valued in modern times than back then in medieval times. With such differences, the play and the movie prove the relationship between Honesty and Deception.

Journal #1

That Cassio loves her, I do well believe ’t.

That she loves him, ’tis apt and of great credit.

Iago is sure that Cassio and Desdemona love each other.

The Moor, howbeit that I endure him not,

Is of a constant, loving, noble nature,

And I dare think he’ll prove to Desdemona

A most dear husband. Now, I do love her too,

Not out of absolute lust—though peradventure

I stand accountant for as great a sin—

But partly led to diet my revenge,

For that I do suspect the lusty Moor

Hath leaped into my seat. The thought whereof

Doth, like a poisonous mineral, gnaw my inwards,

And nothing can or shall content my soul

Till I am evened with him, wife for wife.

Iago won't give up until he can get revenge on the Moor.

Or, failing so, yet that I put the Moor

At least into a jealousy so strong

Another plan of Iagos, is to make Othello feel so much rage that it clouds his judgement.

That judgment cannot cure. Which thing to do,

If this poor trash of Venice, whom I trace

Iago apparently does not give a shit about Roderigo.

For his quick hunting, stand the putting on,

I’ll have our Michael Cassio on the hip,

Abuse him to the Moor in the right garb

(For I fear Cassio with my night-cape too)

Make the Moor thank me, love me, and reward me

Iago wants to trick the Moor into favoring him, so that he can proceed with his plans.

For making him egregiously an ass

And practicing upon his peace and quiet

Even to madness. 'Tis here, but yet confused.

Knavery’s plain face is never seen till used.

Journal #2

Cassio-Act 2 Scene 3

Cassio and Iago have a drink even though Cassio can't hold his well. Cassio gets drunk quickly, maybe after two glasses of meed, or wine. Iago then forces Roderigo to fight Cassio, and since Cassio is drunk, he does not know what is happening. After beating up Roderigo, Iago calls for help and Othello comes in. Othello then sees all of what happened, and can't believe that Cassio would do such acts of hatred. Since Iago's nickname is Honest Iago, Othello relies on Iago to tell the truth on what happened. Iago plays his cards well and then Cassio realizes that his life, and all the power he has built up, collapsed right in front of his face. Iago then tells Cassio that interacting with and, talking to Desdemonia can fix his trouble. This is just a lie and Iago is pulling Cassio right into his trap. Honest Iago does not seem very honest after all. Also the fight between Cassio and Roderigo gave Roderigo the reason to attack Cassio with his sword when Iago told him to later in the play.

Journal #3

Cassio was always a persistent but nice person. However he was not nice to his enemies, slain by the sword they were. The battles he faced were only his calling for a greater role. Cassio was put under Othello's command and improved as a warrior. Othello noticed that Cassio had potential and decided to take him under his wing. Once after a battle, Othello took Cassio out to a pub. Cassio soon found out that he could not hold his alcohol well. Cassio had many great talents but drinking was not one of them. Slowly as Cassio rose through the ranks, Othello started to like him more and more. Othello had to decide who to promote to General and he could not decide between Cassio and Iago. Othello remembered that Cassio fights very well and decided to make him General. Cassio went farther in life than he ever thought he could. But someone else wanted Cassio’s position and Cassio knew nothing.

Journal #4

My character is Cassio who is a General in Othello's army. He is a powerful man who likes to have his orders followed. He probably has great posture and his back is straight. He speaks forcefully, and clearly but with emotion. I expect him to be drinking in the scene and Iago knows that he has very poor and unhappy brains for drinking. He could be drinking wine or maybe meed. Wine is hard to find but meed is very easy to make. so meed would be more likely to be drunk. Even though Cassio is a General and I'm guessing he is rich, he would drink meed because, he is a man of the people. Cassio carries himself with great power, and people probably feel his presence in the room because he is General. Of course Cassio has an alcohol problem, and thus will get drunk, and fall into Iago's trap.

Post Journal

Reputation, Reputation, Reputation! O, I have lost my reputation! I have lost the immortal part of myself, and what remains is bestial. My reputation, Iago, my reputation!

This quote is said by Michael Cassio, and is said after the fight between Cassio, and Roderigo. Iago calls for help, and Othello, and his attendants run into the bar, or place where Cassio, and Iago were drinking.  Othello calls to Iago, and asks him what happened, because everyone calls Iago, Honest Iago. Iago then exaggerates his feelings for Cassio and says something similar to, “I could not talk against Michael Cassio but if I need to tell what happened my Lord.” Iago then tells that Cassio got into a fight because he was drunk and it was an accident. Othello listens, and Cassio is worried about his rank, and the reputation he is losing because of this incident. Iago then tells Cassio to visit Desdemonia to gain back what he once lost, which of course is a trap and will lead to Cassio’s demise. This is what Iago wants to happen, so that he can become General and get Othello for fucking his Emilia. All of the characters are part of Iago’s plan of power and they do not even know it.

To A Charming Señorita

Tchaikovsky, Op. 39, No. 18

The great composer Tchaikovsky generally did not fare too well financially. He was very lucky to have the support of a very wealthy noblewoman, Nadezhda van Meck. They never actually met. She just believed in his music. Her money made it possible for Tchaikovsky to write his greatest music without having to worry about where his next meal was coming from. He wrote this song for her.

Crossing Boundaries: Openly Gay

Posted by Sabian Rosales in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 6:28 am
Being gay is being more and more accepted by the United States but what about the times when everyone was against it? Back then, you could be killed for it. People thought it was a disease or a sickness. But it is not any of those, it is just who you are. My Dads felt that they were born gay. Their stories tell you about what happened to them and what they did.

But after going through this interview, I got to experience my Dad's lives and hear about the struggles they had.

My Languages that I use

When I talk to someone that I don't know I become quieter. Also when I interact with strangers I usually play with my hands and avoid eye-contact. But when I talk to someone that I interact with often I become more open with that person.

In my old circle of friends, we would talk about Yu-gi-oh and video games. To my parents and other people, it's like a whole other language. It's like “this card would go great with this card” and other people look at us with a blank face.

In Video Games, kids play extremely violent games that either make them "Rage" or make them violent in life. The Call of Duty Franchise and other "Shooters", all the kids play these and when I see people(including my friends) play these games, they just get mad whenever they start losing. A Shooter is a game where you basically run around and kill people with guns. I do play these but not often, I mostly go towards games that Do NOT involve killing people with guns. People just want the newest games and I lay back and play 2-D pixelated games. Game Boy Advance/Color, Nintendo 64, Arcade games; These systems are old and to me they are just  as good as the high-tech systems.

"What games do I like?", If I get asked that I usually reply with, "Fighting games and anything that involves Swords. "What kind of Fighting games?", "The ones that let you move around freely or pin you against another opponent." "So like Mortal Combat?", "No I don't like seeing people getting their heads split open. Soul Calibur is more of my choice."

Mortal Combat?, Soul Calibur?, these are names that describe a franchise. Left, Right, Up, Down, Square, Circle, Triangle, X, L1, R1, L2, R2, L3, R3…These terms are names of the buttons on a Playstation 3 controller. Video games are just getting more and more complicated…before it was just directions, A, B, Start and Select. I tend to stop playing games that are complicated because it would be a pain to remember all those combos.

"Do you like Minecraft?" I have gotten asked this many times, my reply "No because I don't understand the game." or "I just can't get attached to it." Minecraft is a "3-D" Pixel game, to me Pixel games should be 2-D because they look better and all you need to do is move 4 directions not ∞. (∞ was used because if I was to include the number of directions, it would be un-writable.)

Card games? Yu-gi-oh is my choice because it's simple and easy to understand. but now it's getting way too complicated. To me when a game gets too complicated, I start to lose interest because I need to remember all these "new" rules.

Some video games are different than others. By this I mean that they have something that other don’t. “Mods” are what these game have. Mods are usually files that Modify the game in some way. Either it be Characters, Weapons or Maps. “Maps” are the areas where a Character can move, sometimes a Glitch or Bug will occur and the Character can go outside of the Map. Glitches or Bugs are when something wrong happens with the program and was not checked. These can be when you fall through the ground, become invisible or when you gain experience at an abnormal rate. These can be problematic for some, helpful for others and hilarious for most.

Being social is a hard thing for me to do, and when there is an uncomfortable topic usually I change the topic well without the person knowing. However my social abilities rely on interacting with people a lot. But I don't get to talk to people much, only at school I can do such. But the wonders of the phone!, it easier for me because I do not have to look the person in the face. Yes it is hard for me to look people in the eye and so I usually look away. Some think that it's disrespectful when I look away but it's something that is hard for me to not do.

When I first moved to Philly, I barely talked and to this day I don’t remember how I talked. In middle school, I didn’t know anybody and to tell the truth, the majority of the school was african american. I was the only caucasian person there, except for the teachers. I met my friends one by one, and slowly I started to talk like them.

“Hey(instead of Hello), how’s it going?”

“It’s pretty good...”

“Yo, there’s this video I saw yesterday, it was so funny.”

“Yo”, that was my most commonly word used in that school. I actually became known for using it so much.

“Really, what was it about?”

“Man, this guy did some crazy moves on his skateboard and he fell.”

(At this moment my friends and I would just start to crack up”

“Awww man, how did he fall?”

“He flipped and landed on his head!”

(Another moment of laughing)

Why did I think that people getting hurt was funny? I don’t know but it’s probably because all the other kids laughed about it. I slowly over time stopped laughing at it.

And over time new phrases were made by my friends,

“I’m done!”

(This means not literally that you are finished but it means that something abnormal happened or surprising)

“That IS a shame...”

(Yes, it mean’s exactly how it’s written, When something that is hard to believe or when something happens, such as someone falls off their bike or if we lost in a video game.)

“How’s that Salt?” and “You got played!”

(They technically mean the same thing, “So close and you mess up” or “You got played like a violin”)

When ever someone laughs at what I do and I do not think it’s funny, I say

“How is that funny? Please explain to me why that it funny?”

Sometimes I add, “I want to laugh too”.

Most people can’t say anything

Language, to me is sound when it is negative and words when it’s positive.

Music is a natural language to me. I currently play the piano and enjoy it often. It allows me to channel my feelings through the instrument. Practicing is a required part for an instrument, but it becomes extremely annoying when I want to do other things. It’s not that I don’t like piano but having to practice is a hassle.

Language is not just words but also it’s sounds. Music is an example of that and being able to express myself through my piano gives me yet another way to communicate.

Struggles in Life

Posted by Sabian Rosales in English 2 - Pahomov on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at 3:28 pm

Life, yes life, everyone at some point or even everyday goes through some obstacle that blocks their path. I had to go through several everyday.

You ask for my name? It's Hector, always Hector. Not some fancy name like Hector D. Johnson, it's just Hector. I constantly remind myself of who I am, my name, my birthday, and why I continue to not give up.

I have been through so many places and probably another is going to add itself to that list. I have been through 7 hospitals, 3 RTFs, Residential Treatment Faculties for those who do not know, 4 foster homes and it just keeps growing. I have only myself to rely on and nobody else. It's really been hard for me to trust anyone because either I never see that person again or they betray me. I just can't TRUST anyone. When I went to a new RTF, I immediately got into a fight and the “staff” who were “supposed” to break it up, did not. They just stood there and laughed and smiled like it was a comedy show. How could I trust adults, when I'm just entertainment for them?

They just put all these boys together and what did they expect? That it was going to be a Happy ever after? Hell no, it was just Chaos, there was fighting wherever you looked. I said that there are only boys and I never saw a girl in a RTF. I wonder where they kept them? I hope it was better than THIS.

When I was first thrown into a hospital, I thought, “Is this where I spend half my life in this room with bars on windows?” It felt like prison. It WAS prison. You couldn't even have shoe laces, belts or anything that can be used to kill yourself. I wasn't gonna do that.

The foster homes weren't much better. They were prisons too: house rules. The owners said, “You can't do this and You can't do that!”. There were classic rules like, “You need to eat your veggies first.” and “You need to eat everything on your plate before you can have more.”

You're probably wondering why I keep track of where I have been. It's the only way that I can trace my life back to my parent. Yes I left my parent at a very young age. That parent was my mother and I will never see her again because I cannot contact her. My mother has blonde hair and a wonderful smile and I will never see her smile again. My father told me, I'll see you again in three weeks and I never saw him again. I pushed him out of my mind because he betrayed me. All I can do is to continue to live and get through these difficulties and break through. I hope that one day I will see my mother again, healthy and happy. But I know one thing, that I won't see her anytime soon because I am moving again to another place.

The Post for Change (Blog Post #3)

Posted by Sabian Rosales in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 8:09 pm

This is Slavery

A Story, A Life

People wonder what can "we" do to stop or change Human Trafficking? Like I said before there are main types of Human Trafficking such as Sex Trafficking and the Labor Trafficking. Both of these are horrible, but what will put an end to this? Humans (Victims) are tricking into thinking that they will finally be able to go to America or where that wish to go but are made into slaves that are forced to work way below the minimum wage. Also yes, it does happen in other places besides the United States. It happens mainly in Eurasia and according to research it does not have a high rate of happening in the US but that does not mean that it does not happen at all.

Hope, they take their hope and twist it. The Slave Traders take the Victims “Hope” of supporting their family, actually getting out of their home and twist into a promise that will never come true. The Slave Traders say “If you come with me I’ll take you to “blank” and all you need to do is work for me for a while.” That “while” will never end and the Victims and never meet their dreams. Their dreams will never come true, they will continue to work unless someone helps them. But how can that person help if they do not know where to help. The victims cannot call out for help because they are trapped, trapped as a slave in a foreign country. “They are largely silent, they have no voice, no hope, that’s the impact.”

Here is a story that one of my fathers suggested to me, it talks about prostitution in Spain. Have you ever wondered where Human Trafficking Victims come from?

What could stop this or who? For example if this was happening in Pennsylvania, who could stop it? Many may think the president but President Obama can’t do anything. It is actually the local officials, such as Police. The problem is getting the police to actually get up and do something. Right now Police are lazy some are not. If the police investigated more into Human, Sex and Labor Trafficking, they could find a Slave Trading Route or a building where it takes place.

Now to make the Police in other countries to get up and do something. The President whether it is a he or she could definitely affect the Police and get them to do something. But maybe it is a problem with the Police, the Policemen or Policewomen could not be willing or wanting to help. No matter how hard people may try, it is almost impossible to stop men and women from having or thinking about coitus.

The Time to Act is Now, People of The World End This Crisis!

Human Trafficking Blog Post #2

Human Trafficking, a story that never ends…

Why does this continue? Will this ever end? Why does this happen? Is it for greed or do the Traffickers do this to feel superior? What are the reasons behind this? Is there a way to stop this?

Human Trafficking is not just making people work in farms, orchards and factories; Human Trafficking puts women and children into prostitution. These people are sold into sex trafficking and their scared because they know that the place that they are being taken to is not going to make them happy.

These children, women and men who become Victims are forced to work and are tortured if they slow down. They are even raped and treated like trash. This is beyond Human Understanding of why captors would do this. What is it that makes them think this?

Human and Sex Trafficking is an underground trade. What I mean by that is that the underground is like a black market, it’s all done in secrecy. I found out that women that are aggressive towards their Captors are treated work while does their “work”. There is an interesting Blog Post I found that talks about not just women in Sex and Human Trafficking but men too. The comments show what people think about Human and Sex Trafficking.

Human Trafficking and the stories behind it.

Human Trafficking is a horrible thing and it’s happens to poor people who have dreams of going to another country. So they talk to some person who owns this “transporting business” and then the poor person gets taken to another place where they work and get paid below the minimum wage. Simply to put it, they are trapped there for most of their life because the owners destroy their Passport and Id. Then they are put to work past the limit of human capabilities and they are fed food that probably doesn’t taste good.

The continuation of Human Trafficking is terrible and it’s all done for profit. All this does is destroy the migrants from other countries and towns who just what to support their families and instead they get captured and worked to the edge of death. Children and especially women are sold into prostitution and are tortured by their Slave Masters; I think the weight of this subject is a lot to handle but even harder to talk about. Can we stop this or will it continue to go on for many more years? Can you stop it?

Victims of Human Trafficking are being shown the dark parts of the world; children, women and other victims are being terrified and the growing fear of never seeing your family again. The Numerous Words of Human Trafficking are hard to look at but they all say the same thing, Human Trafficking has to stop!

Victims of Human Trafficking are looking for Help but the locations of these enslavement places are hidden from the outside world and lets hope that this modern day Slavery stops and be ended before any more family are disconnected from each other.

The Shackles that hold these victims captive are locked with a key, a key of despair. They take away the victims belongings, demand money, work them half to Death and worst of all, they keep the victims separated from their families. Lives are at stake here and I don’t see the rates going down. People are becoming Victims because they are lied to about having a new life in another country. Victims are dying because of this; the Slave Traders do this all for profit and do not even care about the victims, all they care about is the profit and themselves.

Will This Ever Stop Happening?

Interesting Quotes and Facts

A senior U.N. official says that as many as 2.4 million people may be victims of human trafficking worldwide at any given time.

That Random Epic Reflection (TRER)-Sabian Rosales

Posted by Sabian Rosales in Art - 9 - Hull on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 1:55 pm
Negative Space is a way to draw by using two colors and one picture. You cut out the picture and put one piece to one side then the piece under that piece to the other side and you continue that until it looks close to the drawing below.
I find negative space in my cut-out by finding the alternating colors and picturing the drawing to a higher level.
The stool drawing (which I did not complete because of time issues) was black and white, opposites. Opposites create a cool effect between the two colors and make it pop.
Seeing in negative space gives you a different perspective of the drawing that you are making and allows you to think of what to add or take.
I think negative space enhances simple drawings but creates a problem in complex drawings.

The quotes on the art tells of his reflection on his life. The broken horns, the chink in his armor and the tears in his epaulets describe what Macbeth has taken in and the damage that he has taken from the choices he made. The black crown shows that he is a tyrant and a evil person or overlord. The bandage on his eye and the blank glowing white eye shows that Macbeth is a supernatural force and that he lost all the good that was in him. The evil and soulless creature Macbeth has turned into has put him on the lowest of the lowest.
