When I Become A Teacher

When I become a teacher

I'll put a map of the world on every wall in my classroom

My students will always know to have a universal mindset

When they hear freedom, they'll think of more than spirituals and Emancipation

They'll remember the stinking pits at Babi Yar

The curled steel at Auchwitz

Sarajevo’s rifle butts

Cambodia’s grit and sweat and death

These classroom walls will not fence their minds.

Eyes will be opened. Again.

Instead of asking my students to adjust to my teaching style

Fawn in silent awe over my genius

I'll ask them how they learn

Then tend to the visual

Auditory

and tactile learners

the best way I can

They’ll never doubt their place in my plan,

Confuse our classroom for a cookie-cutter

Stage where they must sit on their hands.

I’ll take criticism.

Gather it like gold dust between my fingers.

Never satisfied, I’ll Practice my practice forever.

My classroom will be painted bright blues and yellows

Along with students drawings, murals and poetry

Displays of Me Magazines

And word walls

Scenes from books acted out

Role playing

and Mock trials

I will appreciate their creativity

I will teach my students inquiry

Ask them questions about the world around them

Their opinions on issues from health care to the Palestine Wall

I won't talk at them, but with them

We'll have discussions and debates

I will challenge them

Ask them how they would tackle issues like budgets cuts

Low reading levels

And school safety

I'll ask them how they feel about Pennsylvania finding money to build 3 more prisons but cutting funding from schools

Or how they feel about districts paying millions for standardized test and curriculum but not having enough for extra curricular activities

They will be informed

My students will be poets

storytellers

actors

artists

analyst

activists

All while being beautiful

Everyday I will tell them they're beautiful

Extra Credit Assignment

Posted by Sinnea Douglas in Statistics - Thompson on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 2:10 pm
For the 1st quarter our benchmark for statistics was to calculate the consumer price index for different grocery stores. The Consumer Price Index is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. It measures changes through time in the price level of consumer goods and services purchased by households.

We worked in groups of three to collect prices of different grocery store items. My group investigated Shop Rite, Acme, and Fresh Grocer. We collected prices on items like bottled water, cereal, ice cream, bread, and chips. We used statistics by calculating the mean prices for each item in each store. After we got the mean we calculated the five number summary and IQR’s for the items. We displayed our information on box plots and histograms. We calculated this information for all three grocery stores.

This benchmark helped me better understand grocery store prices. It helped me choose which store was more beneficial to shop at when it comes to saving. I learned that all stores are not the same. Sometimes prices differ because of the brands of food or just because of where it is sold. I noticed that the same items that were sold at Acme and Shop rite were considerably lower than the items sold at the Fresh Grocer. We connected this to the neighborhood the Fresh Grocer was in. Stores in wealthy neighborhood tend to have higher prices.

How it connected to the core values:

·      Inquiry: Are question was to find the consumer price index of different grocery stores.

·      Research: We each went out to different stores to collect prices of different items.

·      Collaboration: We worked in a group of three.

·      Presentation: We presented our findings to the class in a keynote

·      Reflection: We included reflection questions in our presentation to show what we learned from the project.

  • Back in the days when i was young i'm not a kid anymore
  • But some days i sit and wish i was a kid again
  • Back in the days when i was young i'm not a kid anymore
  • But some days i sit and wish i was a kid again
  • Back in the days
  • Verse one:
  • When i just a little niggerole
  • I looked up to my bigger bro

  • Y'all remember way back then, when it was 1985
  • All the way live, i think i was about ten
  • One of those happy little niggaz singin the blues
  • That be always tryin to bag with the shag (and karate shoes)
  • Sayin "yo momma black, his momma this, his momma that"
  • Then he get mad and wanna scrap
  • We stay mad about, ten minutes then it's like back on the bike
  • To play hide and go get it with the younger hoes by the bungaloes
  • Then switch to playin ding dong ditch, when that gets
  • Old and too cold to hack it, threw on a bomber jacket
  • You could tell the ballers cuz they bell wearin gazelles
  • If they really had money raised be sportin bk's
  • And, all the girls had they turkish link
  • If it broke then they made earrings to it, like they meant to do it
  • But, sometimes, i still sit and reminesce
  • Then, think about the years i was raised, back in the day

So far I have made a tumblr for one of my main characters. She hasn't made many posts because of her limited internet access. I am working on incorporating her tumblr into the story and making one for the other character.

Since my character is away on vacation she has limited internet access. But she can get online at the town library, which she rarely likes to go to. I did make a tumblr account for her though, and throughout the story she will make a few post on it. But because of her limited web access she keeps a journal. I will keep record of that journal on word. Next, I will be deciding what type of friends she has on tumblr and what things she will post in her brief postings.

For the last three months we’ve slow danced in a burning room.

I’ve got the blood caked beneath my fingernails to prove it

    Do you? :(

    We got laughter

    Strewn across July linen

    On a hot afternoon

    In an empty room

With sweat and the beat of a raggedy window fan :)

    251 Word Sentence Story

Posted by Sinnea Douglas in Storytelling - Chase on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 5:09 pm
It was a sticky, sweaty day, the kind that makes every article of clothing your wearing melt into your skin like a thick stick of butter in a scolding hot skillet or like a snowball in the warm waters of the Red Sea as I sat in Youseff’s dark muggy house on the dangerous crime and crack infested corner of 54th and Springfield, I began to sweat, small beads of perspiration formed along my hairline and dribbled down the sides of my face, more formed in the crease of my neck and behind my ears, I sat continually dabbing myself with thin moist tissues that only left tiny papery balls along my hot irritated body as I wiped a pool of sweat out of my eyes I looked across the room at Kavi, she was curled up on the loveseat, knees tucked into chest, her feet covered in black socks with ugly big eyed frogs with long pink looped tongues and she had her eyes open, I could see her small hazel pupils peeking through her lash invaded eyelids, I though “why does she sleep like that?”, Anwar must have read my mind because he slithered from his cool spot on the floor and crept his sweaty black face right up to Kavi’s and screamed a loud shrieking pubescent scream as her face met his- now of course Kavi jumped and Youseff came tumbling down the stairs, he tripped on a pair of roller skates that were left on the steps.

    Riding the Subway

Posted by Sinnea Douglas in Storytelling - Chase on Monday, February 7, 2011 at 8:31 pm
I hate riding the subway. The noise of steel and static-ey intercom voices gives me a nauseating headache. So it was a normal train ride. Babies crying, loud cell phone conversations and the stench of sweat and corn-chips. I was sitting in the single seat, reading the Unlitter Us ads when the train stopped at Hunting Park Station. A flood of people got on, including two staggering men who were carrying duffle bags and a bottle of OE. Seconds after the door closes these two fools start arguing about killing each other. One sips on the forty to long and the other gets mad and starts yelling about a gun in his duffle bag. Now by this time people get up and start running. I didn't waste anytime to follow. I not usually a follower but when people start running I run too. So I ran.

Sinnea American Gov. 2nd Quarter Benchmark

It wan't easy deciding which laws, court cases offices to include in my project. I tried to look for things that really interested me. I also wanted to include things that had a major impact on my life. It was hard trying to find comprehendible databases that included all laws, supreme court cases and bureaucratic offices.

As I get older I expect the government to affect my life more and more. I want to be a teacher which is a government job. I also will pay more taxes and be paid by the government. My entire career will deal with the government.

Lobbying Assignment #5 - Finalize and Extend

Posted by Sinnea Douglas in American Government - Laufenberg on Monday, January 10, 2011 at 2:08 pm
For this last post I came up with an outline for a letter to the editors of The Philadelphia Metro and The Notebook.

Topic: Standardized Curriculum in Philadelphia High Schools

    Main Point:
The point of this blog post it to have people become aware of the injustices being done to students and teachers at Philadelphia Renaissance Schools ( and schools around the country) Standardized testing is not the one and only way to measure intelligence. Different students come from different backgrounds and have multiple intelligences, so why should they all be given the same test to measure those intelligences? Strictly Test Preparatory Curriculum's strip teachers of the right to be creative in the classroom and build their own lessons. My mission is to prove to the School District of Philadelphia that there is another way and convince them to try it.

I will complete this letter and email or mail it to the two newspapers mentioned above.

    Bureacracy Reflection

Posted by Sinnea Douglas in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 8:09 am

I did my project on applying for welfare benefits. The benefits included food stamps, health care coverage, child care, etc. The process was sort of hard because to apply for benefits online you have to create an account and fill out a lot of personal information but I couldn't do that because that was not apart of the project. So I had to stop at a certain point. If  I could change this process I would make it so that people could find out more about the process online before actually applying and having to give out personal information. I think this process in particular is complicated because the government is giving you aid. If they are going to give it to you they want to know that you absolutely need it. The only way the can find that out is by getting all your personal information like income, bank reports, pay stubs, etc.

So far the process of Lobbying for non standardized education has been okay. It is still a little difficult to find supporters and people in office who are strongly against it. I will now start looking closer to home for people instead of researching people in congress.

    Researching The Issue...

Posted by Sinnea Douglas in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 6:56 pm
Status: There are a few elected officials who support the issue. Their support and ability to get the issue out there would help a lot. Opponents are schools that perform well and make it seem as though testing is the only way to go.

    Allies:

    <object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iG9CE55wbtY&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iG9CE55wbtY&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></object>

Who Else Is Working on the Issue?

Cody and Taylor. We all do not have the same focus are in Education but we all can still collaborate.

Influence: If we can show students, teachers, and officials the way we learn at SLA maybe they will see that there are other effective ways besides testing.

Time Frame: We only have until mid January and there will be time taken out due to winter break but there is enough time to get the information out there.

Key Dates: Thurs- Meeting with Cody and Taylor

    Election Day Assignment

Posted by Sinnea Douglas in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 3:04 pm

I interviewed a young man from my neighborhood.

    1.   What motivated you to come out and vote?

“It just seems like the right thing to do. If I’m able to why not?”

    2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

“I’m not fully aware of all the issues but I just want to see someone who is real you know, someone who will keep their promises.”

    3. Do you vote in every election? (How regularly do you vote?)

“I’m sort of a new voter, the first time I voted was in the Obama election. This is only my second time.”

    4. Do you know why we vote on Tuesday?

“No, I’m sure I learned it in school before, but I can’t remember.”

    5. Where have you encountered the highest amount of ad campaigning? Radio, TV, print, internet, other.

“Probably the stuff they leave on the doorstep. They call my house too.”

    6. What was the most memorable campaign ad that you have encountered?

“I don’t even remember. I didn't pay attention to them that much.”

    7. Are you always sure of who you are going to vote for when you walk into the booth or are you still deliberating?

“Well since this only my second time I’m not really sure how to answer that. I was sure I was voting for Obama my first time but this time I wasn’t really sure. I kinda just chose who my dad was always talking about. He knows more about this stuff than me, so I just use him.”
