Where did he travel?

What was his influence where he was if any?

What were his plans and how did he plan to execute them?

The Right to Assemble

Posted by Rashaun Williams in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 12:20 pm

1st Amendment (Right to Assemble)

We can come together and act as a collective voice. We bring awareness from a grass-root level to what we think the issues are and how to solve them. Our unity can convince the government and officials to reform policies and have the interest of the people in mind.

http://scienceleadership.org/blog/Right_TO_Assemble

I liked the fact that I was able to go over the things I already do in my city. We were given the ability to create a video that took the form of anything we wanted it to be, which is one of the easiest ways to express yourself and your opinion. Specifically to me, I embody my opinion so personally, I feel like what ever I have to say actually holds some weight to it.

It's always interesting knowing that even after you assemble as a people, there's the possibility that your collective voice might not make an actual difference. There are many times that is the case, which makes me think of the best ways to come together with people and bring people to together. An example of this is Occupy Wall Street, which didn't seem to do much but make a lot of noise, but that's not to say it was pointless.

I could have improved my project by going deeper into the work I do and try to get done in my city. People would then get a serious feel for how deeply the right to assemble actually is to me.

Normally I do all the project myself if I'm working with a group, but this time I didn't because my computer was down. My partner and I added a member to the group after we were already established, my group and I were late, and the communication seemed good, but everyone had their own agenda, which shows of course in the overall work. What did work was the fact that the project came together, and for all the issues we had as a group, it isn't terrible.

If I had to do things over again, I might have worked by myself or took lead more. I normally do, but this time I decided not to be "that guy" which didn't work to my favor too well.

This project reenforced my knowledge that with the right to assemble, there most be movement there after. Without it, a collective voice speaks loudly, but doesn't make progress.

Lobbying Post 4

Posted by Rashaun Williams in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 7:53 pm
In the real world, I am trying to lobby for the empowerment of young people through various means. Because this is a broad statement and goal, I've narrowed my approach to this through a single system. Future Leaders Advancing Self Help is an initiative I've helped reinstitute in Philadelphia with OIC of America. It was created in 1989 by OIC, and through their collaboration with my organization Phresh Philadelphia, we've brought it back. The goal of FLASH is to bring civic and service based organizations together under an umbrella of community engagement and true empowerment for Philadelphia.

With strength in numbers, my thoughts are that the more organizations that seem to be unified in their approach serving youth, the louder their collective voices will be in encouraging this movement. The two components to FLASH, the initiative and the program, are simple.

FLASH Description

We are ENTREPRENEURS who understand the value of community advancement as a necessity for the future of the people in our neighborhoods, our city, our nation and our world.

We are ACTIVISTS, standing, walking, and running for righteousness, equality, and justice under a united front that we build together through peace and love.

We are STUDENTS who know how important and equitable true education is, and that learning should stretch beyond the classroom.

We are PARENTS, showing our children virtue, morality, respect, and love through the construction of the mind, body, and spirit.

We are CITIZENS, consciously taking interest in our environments, ensuring universal safety, just legislation, and equity for all.

We are EDUCATORS, teaching the importance of history, HERstory, YOURstory and MYstory so that THEstory is less of a mystery.

We are HUMAN BEINGS and we treat each other as such.

We are FUTURE LEADERS ADVANCING SELF HELP.

FLASH Initiative

The FLASH Initiative will gather more proactivity among youth, influence service, make community engagement easy and rewarding, and provide more productive citizens to the city.

  • Get organizations to pledge to be to be Future Leaders Advancing Self Help
  • Create online database for citizens to get involved to civic and service based organizations in their city
  • Empower people young people through making resource connection easy
  • Become a nationwide movement

FLASH Program

The FLASH Program will instill leadership, collaboration and early community creation, citizen development and early involvement, and educate outside of the classroom.

  • Educate kids on local, national, and international past and current events
  • Allow kids to generate conversation and research information
  • Challenge kids to make a difference through creating projects, business ventures, bringing awareness, etc.
  • Have kids pitch their ideas as a group to Philadelphia officials, public figures, and organizations to gather support for their cause.

As of now, FLASH is only a few organizations short and a website away from reaching the mayors office. This is important because through gathering the support of the city's mayor, reaching to other organizations, the Philadelphia school district, and the many departments of the city won't be too much of an issue. The goal is that through the support of the city's officials, FLASH can gather Philadelphia's public figures, celebrities, greatest influences, and more to be supporters. The hardest part of this process will be to gather youth involvement, but if we can successfully gather the support of public figures, that shouldn't be an issue.

Block Party Permits

Posted by Rashaun Williams in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 11:49 am
BlockPartyFlowRobert Broadwater and I together went to figure out the what the process of getting a block party permit would be. The process wasn't that daunting as most things in government, I assume it's this way because of how frequent block parties are in the city. By either getting the paper work yourself or downloading, we filled out some pretty basic and impersonal information which focused on the street and community the block party will be held. This paperwork was pretty much simple. I don't think there's anything I'd change about the process because it seems extremely easy and simple. I don't like the rain date scheduling, but then again, that allows people to plan more strategically when they'll plan their block parties. Without the set of rules and regulations for this permit, people would apply all over at anytime which wouldn't be too structured.

Kawashima v. Holder

Posted by Rashaun Williams in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 8:23 pm
The Case Issue
“Can filing a false tax return count as an “aggravated felony” for purposes of a statute that subjects an immigrant convicted of an “aggravated felony” to deportation.”
(Can immigrants who file a false tax reports be deported)

The Law’s being Challenged
An aggravated felony is when someone lies about over $10,000 and/or when the government losses over $10,000 in tax return money.
(Section 7201 of title 26  explains this)

The Law’s History
Immigration law allows the US government to deport anyone who has committed an “aggravated felony.” At first it only applied to crimes such as murder and drug trafficking, but congress has expanded the definition overtime.

What Happened
Akio and Fusako Kawashima, a Japanese couple falsely reported their income taxes. They’ve been citizens of the US since 1984 (27 years). In 1997, Mr. Kawashima filled a false corporate tax return and his wife helped him. It made them seem as though they made less money then they actually did which illegally exempted them from paying government of owed tax money. They lied, and it cost the government over $10,000 in tax revenue. Section 7206 of the tax code was violated due to these actions.

Kawashimas were convicted of a violation under Section 7206, the tax code, not tax evasion which violates Section 7201. Because of this, they weren’t deported. The government still started to deport them which would relate to Section 7206.

The Question to the Supreme Court
Do the Kawashimas fall under Section 7201 even though they violated Section 7206.

My Prediction
At 1st, I thought they were a lost cause, but they have an awesome lawyers, so now I think they might actually win and stay in America, but still face consequences for disobeying the laws under Section 7201.

Science & Society Benchmark 2011

1 cup of chopped celery
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can of about 15 ounces of chickpeas
1 can of about 15 ounces of kidney beans
1 cup coarsely chopped tomato
1 can of about 8 ounces of tomato sauce
1 cup of water
1 to 2 jalapeño peppers
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons of sugar
1.5 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon salt
1 dried oregano.25 teaspoon of black pepper
2.5 cups of about 10 ounces of frozen green beans

1. Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, celery and garlic; cook and stir 5 minutes or unit tender.

2. Add chickpeas, kidney beans, tomato, tomato sauce, water, jalapeño pepper, chili, powder, sugar, cumin, salt, oregano and black pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low;, summer, uncover, 20 minutes. Add green beans; simmer 10 minutes, or until tender
Analysis
I would say that all of the food is whole food, only because my mother and I primarily shop organic, but if I had to take a guess with the consideration that most of the foods others buy isn't organic, I'd say about 40% of the food is processed. Those things would be things like the beans, and the spices. That doesn't mean these foods were genetically engineered, it just means they were processed in an industrial factory somewhere.

Garbanzo beans (chickpeas)provide an excellent source of molybdenum. They are a very good source of folic acid, fiber, and manganese. They are also a good source of protein, as well as minerals such as iron, copper, zinc, and magnesium. As a good source of fiber, garbanzo beans can help lower cholesterol and improve blood sugar levels. This makes them a great food especially for diabetics and insulin-resistant individuals. When served with high quality grains, garbanzo beans are an extremely-low-fat, complete protein food. Green beans have a lot of antioxidant mineral manganese. Many of these antioxidants reduce the chance of type 2 diabetes. It also improves blood fats and better protection of these fats from oxygen damage, which increase card. Kidney beans can lower cholesterol and can prevent blood sugar levels from rising too high too quickly after finishing a meal, which is great for those with diabetes or resistance to insulin. Other then providing protein, they have a lot of fiber, lower the risk of getting a heart attack, balance blood sugar levels, and can increase your energy by helping to restore iron.

Off hand, someone who is not used to eating food like this, will have an interesting time used the restroom. Many of the people who've come over my home and have had meals similar always do, it never fails, and that's because these types of foods are not only whole foods, but they are healthy foods without meat. It passes through the body differently then meats, and is also softer and less rough then meats too, allowing digestion to be a lot easier then it would be for meats. If you ate these meals everyday, all of the health benefits would eventually be health risks seeing as though food intake needs to be balanced in all areas of one's health.

Most of the food bought I'd have to say was organic, seeing as though my mom and I every so often shop for cooking food from Trader Joe's and Whole Foods rather then places like Giant and Shop Rite. This way, we can talk to other shoppers and get ideas for dishes and guidance on what foods taste good. Even though Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are somewhat commercial grocery food stores because they're franchised, I'd still consider it organic because it's organically grown. I don't know specifically where the foods I got for the project, but some of the things around my house have come from places like Horsham PA, Jeffersonville PA, and places outside of the country like Guatemala and Mexico.

The meal overall costed around $40 to prepare. Considering that this meal was 12 servings total, it can be counted as $3.34 each serving. Shop Rite and Giant profited from the little things like the peppers, onions, and celery, and Whole Foods and Trader Joe's profited from the actual beans peppers. Because of that, both smaller and larger corporations benefited from this.

Personal Reflection
This unit, I really learned more about what it means to eat animal products even as a vegetarian (dairy and eggs) in regard to cancer. I also learned new information about that the food world is trying to, or is currently doing to make the food of America even more fake. I learned just how freaked up this government is and can be, and through my own personal involvement, I learned about many movements against fracking. In terms of food, I will remain to be vegetarian and read the back of just about everything I purchase. I will always recommend healthy food options to my friends and generally all those around me as I've done, and I will support my local and healthy restaurants and food markets. THe largest issue is that food is becoming fake, or genetically engineered specifically for profit and without regard for the people actually eating the food which are the citizens, which in my opinion leads to long term sickness, cancer, deformities and death.

A Fracked Up System (Energy Act Policy 2005)

Posted by Rashaun Williams in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, November 4, 2011 at 8:49 pm
Energy Policy Act 2005 (Video)

Reps the Rep Me:
John Myers, District 201, PA House (D)
Shirley M. Kitchen, District 3, PA Senate (D)
Chaka Fattah, US House (D)

Act History
Introduced by Rep. Joe Barton, a Republican conservative Texasman, on April 18, 2005, the Chairman of the United States House Committee on Energy and Commerce. The role of the Committee is to basically oversee the following.
  • Telecommunications
  • Consumer protection
  • Food and drug safety
  • Public health
  • Air quality and environmental health
  • Supply and delivery of energy
  • Interstate and foreign commerce in general

Interesting facts about Joe Barton is that he opposed the Voting Rights Act in 2006 and is a Tea Party supporter.

Passed by House on April 21, 2005 (249 - 183)
Passed by Senate on June 28, 2005 (85 - 12)
Signed into law by President George W. Bush on August 8, 2005
Supported by President Obama in 2008

Created to solve many of America’s energy problems.
Made many changes to the Energy Policy of the United States
Is a great idea and way to make energy costs cheaper and makes the country more independent.

Dangerous for many individuals directly effected by the collection of energy efficient resources physically and mentally.
Changed the Daylight Savings time one hour ahead on March 11, 2007 instead of April 1, and set back November 4 of 2007 instead of Sunday October 28.

I chose the Energy Act Policy because it's getting a lot of press and attention from people concerned about their health and water, and even oil and gas companies. Personally, I feel directly effected by it, as all things in government directly effect me. This one I felt could effect me in a different manner, which would be my health. If the information about Fracking is true that was sen on Gasland and many more things, then the Energy Policy Act is something that needs serious attention and revitalization. along the way.

I wanted to be entertaining with the presentation, not losing people's attention as it went along, so I decided that I'd do a video and place an song behind the video. I chopped the video into frames to match the song swell because I wanted to draw the viewer in a little more from all the information they had just taken in minutes ago.

In order to really understand the Act, I had to do a lot of reading and research. At first, I thought it was directly related to water and hydrofracturing, but soon I found that it was connected to energy in just about every form. There was also information that wasn't even included in the project that I chose to understand a little more too.

If I had the opportunity to, I would most likely focus on the act in its entry and not just on water and air. I think that these are generally the most important factors of the bill because they relate to the health of the people, but there's a lot of information that isn't talked about in the benchmark presentation that isn't given in terms of money, actual companies, changes that we're made to the country and more.

This bill became a law rather quickly, and I was surprised at just how fast it was passed. Thinking about it again, I wasn't too surprised because I understand that government will work quickly when money is involved. I did more research for the person who introduced the bill and all the things surrounding it, and I found that it's goals are actually great, but it's results are selfish and causing some major controversy in the United States.

This process wasn't really that hard, it was just a lot of reading. No one seemed to really explain how the entire act worked in simple terms, nor did anyone seem to write about the act to explain it either, so that was a process for me, but a rather simple one.

This issue is getting a ton of media attention, some of it smack in the face, some of it subliminal. There are commercials and advertisements for franking as their have been people in the street and posters that are against it.

The major supporters of hydrofracturing are oil and gas companies because this is a source or revenue for them. When you investigate the actual bill in depth, you see that many energy companies and people who work with energy are supporters of the bill as well, due to the benefits that come their way.

There's no current policy written for this topic other then the actual Energy Act Policy itself. Oil companies have specific regulations they must follow and what people don't know is that when oil companies fail to meet these requirements, they get a lot of heat from the government and the oil company managers get a lot of heat from their superiors, like most businesses. Whether we see it or not, it is happening.

I know of this organization personally called Protecting Our Waters, which is a non profit organization with representation all over the tristate and East coast. Through the efforts of petitioners, and collective organizations, they said "Governor Markell of Delaware publicly announced he would vote against the proposed regulations, in the interest of science, public health and the environment." Through connecting with organizations like this, those against fracking can make sure their voices are not only heard but felt. Hopefully Pennsylvania has the same amount of support and people behind the no fracking initiative to keep our waters clean. The way we influence people is through keeping them informed with the process and find ways for them to easily get involved.

Lobbying Against the Energy Act Policy (AntiFracking)

Posted by Rashaun Williams in American Government - Laufenberg on Monday, October 31, 2011 at 6:24 pm
Energy Policy Act 2005

I’m choosing this Act primarily because of the fact that water isn’t something that can be taken in vain even for a second, and if the people of the world do not have any water that is clean enough to drink, the people of the world will die. Money is not greater then the lives of the Earth, and to many members of our government, that is very much the case.

My Local Reps

John Myers, District 201, PA House (D)

Shirley M. Kitchen, District 3, PA Senate (D)

Chaka Fattah, US House (D)

Video Outline

The video I’m creating is simple. It talks about fracking from the presidents perspective, then it talks about how other politicians feel about it. After that, it goes into entertainment which shows some of the effects of fracking, giving information about how to make their voices heard and showing some of the ways people have protested it.

Act History

Introduced by Rep. Joe Barton on April 18, 2005

  • Represents Texas and is very much a Texasman
  • Republican and very Conservative

Passed by House on April 21, 2005 (249 - 183)

Passed by Senate on June 28, 2005 (85 - 12)

Signed into law by President George W. Bush on August 8, 2005

Future Leaders Advancing Self Help

Posted by Rashaun Williams in American Government - Laufenberg on Monday, October 17, 2011 at 9:25 am
With my organization and support elsewhere, I am lobbying an idea to change the way Philadelphian's portray the phrase Flash Mob from its negative connotation to a positive one. Future Leaders Advancing Self Help via Mind Over Body is the acronym the spells out Flash Mob.

The issue with Flash Mobs are the kids have generally nothing to do that grabs their interest other then party and dance. In a nut shell, they use parties and dancing as promotion for themselves with the expectation to gain more publicity and recognition for being Philly's best party crew or dance team. Some of the events that are created through these goals turn violent, disruptive, and go sour really quickly, which is when media more them often refers to the children as a flash mob.

The only piece of legislation that has any correlation to Flash Mobs is the curfew which is broken down my age and location. In this Flash project, I'm not looking to change the curfew back to what it was originally, I am looking to change the image of the cities youth through having Flash events, program initiatives, supporters, and more to be examples of our cities progression int he right direction.

My support is the entire city of Philadelphia. So far, the people who've worked with me to push this initiative are Brick Bandits Ent, Party Krusherz Ent, DJ Damage, Jordan Harris of City Council, Tony Payton of the House Of Reps, Mayor Nutter, OIC of America, 100 Black Men Philly, United Philly, Ebony Suns Enterprises, The Enterprise Center, the Philly Youth Poetry Movement, and many many more

A look inside the mind of a young black male growing up in Philadelphia where statistically he is supposed to fail. Everything around him tells him to do that of that isn't healthy or progressive to his lifestyle but unlike people's image of what he should be, he is different. These are his thoughts and experiences as he travels to school. This is "Before The Day Starts"

Bājíquán’s History

Bājíquán’s Creation

Wu Zhong, also called HongSheng, was the founder of Bājíquán in 1712, and the belief is that he created it in.  Chinese Muslim living in Meng Village of the Hebei Province and at age eight, he studied Wushu. He was practicing in his country yard when an old man named Lai Kou Yuan laughed and made fun of his martial arts techniques. Wu Zhong out of curiousity asked the man what style he was doing and the man’s response was 'Baji quan'. Wu Zhong then became Lai Kou Yuan’s student. After being taught from his master, Wu Zhong made it more advanced.

Bājíquán’s Greatest

Li Shu Wen was one of the most noted Bājí practitioners there ever was, being known throughout the world of martial arts as the “God of Spear”. He's famous for the quote, "I don't know what it's like to hit a man twice" which history has proven to hold truth. Due to the fact no one could defeat him, he was poisoned. One of his most famous and well known students, Liu Yun Qiao was Chinese Emperor Chiang Kai Shek’s bodyguard. From this, Bājíquán became known as the “body gaurd” style. Chiang Kai Shek had his own personal chef who was also a student of Bājíquán in aspirations to avoid suffering the same fate as Li Shu Wen.

People Using Bājíquán & How It Spread

Bājíquán was claimed as the official style of defense of Chinese Empire. It was passed down strictly only to people of Islam considering it’s creators were Muslim. It is said they did not consider themselves Chinese. As of now, Bājíquán is accepted in the Wushu family and is practiced all over the world. During its third generation, it spread throughout much of China, superficially in certain villages and cities. The disciples of Bājíquán though keep much of there techniques hidden and sacred.

Germantown 19144

Hello everyone, and welcome to Germantown 19144. What you are about to experience are a series of videos shot directly in Germantown Philadelphia. These videos include much of the areas information. This includes crime statistics, employment statistics, living statistics and more. The project itself was assigned by Douglas Herman to AIR stream, as a quarter one benchmark. The other activities in the benchmark included a timeline, participating and or volunteering with a local civic center in the community, and more. Our local neighborhood representative is Rosita W. Youngblood. Some background on Rosita Youngblood is that she was elected to serve as a representative on April 19, 1994. She created a variety of community outreach programs. She involved in College fairs, Thanksgiving and Christmas basket giveaways etc. She is apart of multiple committees to advocate for some of the issues that are dear to her such as Public Welfare, Domestic Violence, Personal Insirance and many more. Please enjoy the videos.
