Bread and Roses

Posted by Pauline Garcia in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 11:09 am

Pauline Garcia Capstone

Posted by Pauline Garcia in Capstone - Reddy on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 7:45 am

My name is Pauline Garcia and I am a senior in Science Leadership Academy. For my capstone, I decided to work on the human brain. Knowing that the brain is the control center of our body, I wanted to go through the basic function of how our brain works. Learning the complexity of the human brain, I used my time every Wednesday to learn its functions. The reason why I picked this subject for my capstone is because I wanted to pursue a career in Neurology. I figured out that since I would love to be a neurologist in the future or in medical field, I might as well start early and learn about the basic functions of the human brain. Throughout the whole year of learning, I gathered twenty pages of information about the functions of the brain. It has been a rollercoaster ride trying to understand and learn the complexity of our brain but it was all worth it.

Snippet of the whole research paper

This site helped me understand and review how each parts of the brain functions. The articles have 10 pages worth of information from the four main parts of the brain to the brain stem and why they are water in the brain. It only doesn’t focus on one part of the brain but also link the information with the smaller parts. This website is really helpful to me because I feel like I should just format my project like this. Make a website and let all the information live in there for the sake of other people who are also interested with the human brain.
_____

"Human Brain Structure." Human Brain Structure. News Medical, n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2013. <http://www.news-medical.net/health/Human-Brain-Structure.aspx>.
I actually like this site because it have so much more articles that I can choose from about the brain.  It talks about the structure, diseases, cures, and the little parts of the brain. It’s a great website to gather basic information about the brain. They’re not as detailed like my first source was but it still do the job because I can still add more simple explanation about the brain which is going to be awesome because everyone can understand it.
_____

"Neurological Control." Brain Explorer. Lundbeck Institute, n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2013. <http://www.brainexplorer.org/neurological_control/Neurological_Neurotransmitters.shtml>.
This is more about the neurotransmitters and which are the excitatory and inhibitory. This information helps me to explain further information about the brain and how it works. I can’t talk about the nerves of the brain if i’m not going to talk about the neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are the signals and the ones that keeps up hyper or calm so I wanted to add these information in my project.
____

"What Can You Do Without a Brain?" YouTube. YouTube, 24 Oct. 2012. Web. 31 Jan. 2013. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3teflb1QNN4>.
Another video but this is not really a primary resource. Anyway, this video is pretty cool because it talks about what would happen if we do not have a brain. It also gives examples about animals and insects who lived even then it doesn’t have any heads. In addition, he  also explained why it worked and how it will not work.
_____

"Brain Diseases."
WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 01 Feb. 2013. <http://www.webmd.com/brain/brain-diseases?page=2>.

I would like to add brain diseases and how they are triggered or how they are affecting the brain. Adding this to my project will be great because it will show how the brain function when there are something wrong with it. I would also like to point out the different parts of the brain that are affected depending to the diseases.

I wanted to add the most fatal brain diseases and the incurable ones so that people knows what’s going to happen and the further research that the scientists  are doing. I think this will be helpful in my project because I am making people aware of these diseases and maybe letting them know how to prevent these illnesses, at least.

I actually like this site because it gives me different views of the brain. The other brain anatomy video that I have is great but I feel like it’s also messy because it’s a real human brain that they’re working with. For this one, its more polished and distinct on the parts. It’s nice to have the best of both worlds so I wanted to add this site to the things that i wanted to use because it is distinct.

La ezperanza de Padre McEnroe

Posted by Pauline Garcia in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 11:12 pm

Sociedad Matado Felicidad

Posted by Pauline Garcia in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Monday, February 25, 2013 at 9:49 pm

Mar Adentro

Posted by Pauline Garcia on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 8:07 pm

To be or not to be? That is the question.

Nathan A. Sales states that the Patriot Act is needed to protect America from terrorists. He also states that there will be some elaborated safeguard measures so the officers are not going to abuse this power. However, when I watched "Enemy of the State" I can't just say that this movie is not going to happen in real life. Someday -hopefully never, someone inside of the government or someone with power will use the tools for their own vain needs.

"This tool can only be used to investigate international terrorism, not domestic. And it doesn’t apply to Americans, only to temporary visitors like tourists." - Nathan A. Sales

I have some slight dilemma in this statement because what if, just what if, someone inside US and that is a citizen started to work for the terrorists? Because to be honest, we can never trust everyone because everyone has their own needs. The Patriot Act will give us more problems than we already have. Great power comes with great responsibilities. And who define the word "appropriate"? Also, what are the necessary tools that we need to prevent terrorism?

And where will be our privacy go? Just like Susan N. Herman said in her article, "The Patriot Act is jeopardizing the people's values, freedom of speech, association and religion, privacy and dude process." Everything that is being recorded can backfire and ruin everyone. Privacy is the big problem in this law.

It's not that I am fully hating on the Patriot Act, I am just trying to voice my opinion that this topic needed more time and tweaking for it to be okay. There has to be a lot of thinking and debate when it comes to this kind of protection. Yes, we need protection but this protection can be our weakness in the future.

Define Privacy

Posted by Pauline Garcia in American Government - Herman on Friday, September 14, 2012 at 10:29 pm
While watching "Enemy of the State" I probably shook my head so many times that I will probably have a whiplash. The government was portrayed so bad in this movie. I'm not going to generalize but I'm just going to say that SOMEONE and his group of minions were using their power in such a bad manner. First of all, the villain killed someone in the government. I mean I don't think this happen in real life, and I hope not, but to go to the extend of killing someone just because they didn't agree to the things that he wanted him to do is just plain wrong. The second part was trying to kill another person who holds the information to spill the bad deed that he did. Well, it's not their fault that the guy died but they were the reason why he died. They used their power on people and used technology in a bad way that invaded people's privacy.

When talking about privacy, the plot of this movie has none. The people in the movie does not respect the privacy of other people. There was a part where they were looking at Will Smith's background with his ex-girlfriend. They looked at his bank account and even sticked their nose in his private life like his past relationship! I mean, I don't want people to know what i did back back because past is past. Also when the old crusty villain told his minions to dig some dirty deeds so that "no one will believe him before he talks". I mean, he's in the government and he's the one doing the bad things. Will is not a terrorist, just a threat to him and he's using all these things to invade his privacy! And there were no judge to ask permission to, no warrants, no whatsoever! They were even trespassing in some of the scenes! I think, the government should only know the basics information about me. Like the schools that I go to, where I live, what kind of job I have, like that. Not my bank account or past love interest.

My only concern about this is that, what if people inside the country abuse this power. It's not going to be the terrorist but the citizens who use it for their own selfish actions. We're going to be the enemy of each other and this will be a whole different problem that we have to solve. The only question is, how can we have this power without abusing it?

Define Privacy

Posted by Pauline Garcia on Friday, September 14, 2012 at 10:21 pm

• Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke to Jonathan Flores, he's from Spain. I didn't chose him chose him. He asked to have a private conversation. Then I thought, why not?

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned that he loves rock and romantic musics, but he hates rap music because he think it's ugly. He's 23 years old and he's a student in college majoring in English because he said he wanted to be a teacher in the future :)

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
To be honest, I always tend to talk about other things that what I planned to do. I think this is because we're both just going on with the flow of the conversation. But dont get me wrong though, we still talk to each other well and have a good conversation. We might have some awkward silence for a while but we both regain back our cheerful self.

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I did well on speaking and actually not being awkward and getting along well with him. I didn't have the awkward pace were I'm trying to see what I can say.

  • What specifically do you need to improve on?
Probably more topics to talk about.

I would have more pictures but I didn't know that when I shut my laptop, the conversation will end and close as well. Lo siento.

  • Is your research question clear from the beginning?
Not really, we kind of have to flow through some casualties first then ask the question.
  • Did you post the questions you came up with before having the conversation?  Did you predict how your partner would answer those questions?
Well, we were talking about what we're doing and we both said that we just ate dinner. Then the question just came up and then it went on and on.
  • Did you research your topic before you had the conversation?
Not really, because I think it's better to ask the people themselves than research it myself.
  • Did you post the transcript/video/audio of your conversation?
    Yes, I do.
  • Did you post a paragraph that answers the reflection questions I ask of you in the project description?
    Yes, I did.
  • Did you make it look pretty?  Are there hyperlinks to interesting sources you found while researching your topic?  Do you include images and/or video of your topic?
It's not like eye catching pretty but well organized and whatnot.
  • Did you format your blog professionally?
    I guess I did.

  • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

I spoke to Martin and I forgot where he's from. I think he's from Texas, well near Texas. I didn't actually choose him. He just asked me to chat with him. I'm also kind of practicing to be open and not get stuck of being scared to talk to guys. It went well and he's not creepy at all! So that was a nice experience :)

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned that he's from somewhere near Texas. He likes chinese food and he loves sea food. He barely eat crabs because it's really expensive and rare in their place.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

It's not really in my list but I finally have the guts to speak to guys online. My shyness and thinking they're creepy is out of the line. So hooray! Oh and I finally had the chance to speak okay-ish.

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I think I did well this time. We have a flowing conversation but I noticed that he mostly speak and ask questions. I need to ask more questions and speak more. That's my new goal. Speak more!

Who did I speak to and why did I choose that person?
I spoke to Elizabeth from Venezuela and I picked her because like I said in class back then, I am more comfortable to speak to girls than speaking to guys. I also like her because she's nice and we're both learning how to speak different language. Me spanish, and her english. Our conversation was pretty brief because she said that she have to help her mom on something. She's pretty proficient in English already so she pretty much helped me the whole time.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

Talking to her helped me to speak spanish sort of fluently. I know I still have some problems on how to construct a good and grammatically correct sentence. But she helped me a lot and she even helped me to use some new vocabularies.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

The conversation was not awkward and kind of monotone-ish. Both of us are asking and answering things rather than one person doing the whole interaction.

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I still need to speak Spanish fluently.

GOOOOOOOOAL

Posted by Pauline Garcia in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Monday, April 23, 2012 at 8:51 am
To be honest, I didn't chat with anyone in live mocha or any other sites with chatting things. I did this because I know that if use the chatting method, I will be tempted to copy paste it in google translate. So I decided to speak to a person. Just like the Verizon telemarketer. It was really funny and lets say a bit awkward but he helped me a lot and he was really patient with me.

I didn't chat with anyone but I talked to my boyfriend who can speak fluently in Spanish and English. It was hilarious at first because we dont know what to talk about in Spanish. But then when we started to speak, it went on and on and on. It was actually nice because I know that if I chat with people and I don't know what they are talking about, I have the tendency to go to Google Translate to figure it out. But when we were talking, I dont have my computer with me and I cant translate it. So I have lets say a good practice with him because I actually learn more than just reading it. It was a nice practice to me because he also helped me with some vocabularies and helped me structure the sentence properly. It was also not awkward because I already know him and we don have to break the ice or some sort of thing. However, it was really hard and awkward when I started to talk to his mom. His mom cannot speak in English and only speak fluent and old Spanish. I'm still like a toddler when I speak Spanish and she speak really fast and use vocabularies that I dont even know of. It was hard but we kind of manage to communicate. I was really nice :)

About the skills that I want to improve on, I guess I'm almost there. I'm not a master already but I noticed that little by little, I'm getting there. The skills that I need to improve on is not an over night kind of development. I still need a lot of practice. I still stutter and have some hard time trying to find the right word but I noticed that I dont use english words as much as I used to. So kudos for that!

Who did I speak with and why did I chose that person?

- I spoke with my boyfriend because it was easier for me than talking to a random stranger and being all awkward.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

- We pretty much talked about the weather and food. He likes rainy weather because it makes him sleepy. I also learned how to structure my sentences the right way.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
- This helped me a lot because the conversation was not awkward and it was easy to talk about. The vocabularies that I needed to the conversation is already well known, so yea. It was pretty nice.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
- The not stuttering and spacing out. I actually did well on that. I use my hands to express what I want to say too much though but I think that's fine.

My goal is to talk in spanish slightly fluently.
- To not use any english words in between.
- Try not to stutter and space out a lot.

I already talked to a telemarketer in spanish. He was laughing a little because I asked him if he could speak spanish to me for my school project. He was really nice though, he helped me a lot.

Martial Law

Posted by Pauline Garcia in American History - Herman on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 8:31 am

I picked this time for my project because first of all, I’m Filipino. Second, I live here in America and the history that is taught in class is not Philippine history. Third, people can learn about the Philippines, the country where I came from. Fourth, this is a nice way to learn about my country’s history! When Mr. Herman told us that we could pick any time and place, the first thing that popped into my head was, Philippines. I was so excited that I even pulled my friend, Longnu Nhan, to be my partner and work together. She also was interested on the Philippine history hence the reason why we just started to work together.

The first thing that we did before picking a certain time was we searched what would be an event where there’s a huge impact and reaction in the Philippines. There’s a part with Ferdinand Magellan but we thought that was overrated so we picked the sort of recent time where there was a revolution. That is when we found the time where martial law was first declared. The good thing about it is that my parents and grandmother was around during that time.

When Lulu and I already know what we need to work on, we started to research. Lulu looks for secondary resources and I look for primary resources. I already have a lot of primary resources because I have my mom, dad, aunt, and grandmother to interview about the martial law and Ferdinand Marcos’ regime. Then when Lulu and I finally have all of the information that we needed. We started to pick important dates and events and make our own version of martial law time line. We also added some pictures to have some visual picture on what martial law in the Philippines looks like.

The design of our tri-fold board was a little simple; all we did was paint the Philippine flag. While doing so, we found out what was the meaning behind the colors and symbols in the flag. The three starts represents the three major geographical regions of the Philippines, which was Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The sun represents the independence and the eight rays of the run represents the eight provinces that led the Philippine uprising against the Spanish rule. The top color of the flag, which is blue, represents peace, patriotism, and justice. The bottom color of the flag, which is red, represents the valor and the blood that was split for freedom and independence.  The triangle in the flag represents equality and the Katipunan nationalist organization. While the color white of the flag represents peace and purity.

General Order No.3 – The President ordered that all executive departments, bureaus, offices, agencies and instrumentalities of the National Government, government owned or controlled corporations, as well all governments of all the provinces, cities, municipalities and barrios should continue to function under their present officers and employees, until otherwise ordered by the President or by his duly designated representatives. PROCESS PAPER

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Primary:

Grandmother:
I will interview my parents because they were young when former president Ferdinand Marcos signed the petition for Philippines to be placed under Martial Law. It will help me put more depth to my project because I will have someone who I can interview that experienced what was going on throughout the time. It is nice to get an opinion of a parent, since my grandmother already have my aunts and uncles’ back then when Martial Law was passed. It would be great to know what she felt about her kids and their surroundings. How it was different before and after the Martial Law.

GIF
The gif document is basically a set of photos but it shows the different ways the people protested. It’s like a growing picture when each photo have a lot of people in it with their arms linked together or have huge banners with red tinted inks with slogans written allover it. Instead oh having a whole bunch of picture, I can use the gif to at least minimize the picture usage. It’s old picture too so its kind of hard to see but even then, you can still see the people around. This will help me with my project because it’s showing different rallies that was going during Martial Law.

Mother:
I will interview my parents because they also have experience things about the Martial Law. Even though they were little back then and do not really know what was going on, their opinion still matters because different people have different views and perspective about the issue. It’s nice to know how their opinions developed once they started to figure out what was happening and how they reacted to the things that are going on around them. For short, its like seeing things from their perspective (in a kid vision) and how it changed when they grew older and learned things in school that they didn’t understand before.

Secondary:

EDSA People Power at 25th Anniversary
This resource was from a person who had some sort of experience with the revolution. For the past 25 years, Philippines became the big man. What do I mean by that? Well, they were able to break their silence and fight for their rights. They were able to create businesses without having to worry about the government taking it away form them. And most importantly, they were able to express their opinions. This source talks about how they Philippines improved since the day of their revolution. Not only did it affect their own country, but it also affected other countries. For example, Russia went from being a communism government to a democratic government. All in all, 25 years ago, the Philippines gave hope for themselves and others.

Milestones after EDSA 1
This resource gave me a list of things that shaped the Philippines today. Within 25 year, a lot of different and important events happened. In 1987, congress reopen and it allowed the Filipinos to vote for a leader who can represent them and be the leader of their government. As time goes by, the American Military bases were in the Philippines but that didn't last that long because there was an eruption of Mount Pinatubo, which cause it to end in 1947. Technology was a huge help for the Philippines because without that, they wouldn't be able to update the world with what was going on in their country. This source taught me how all the events that happened in the last 25 years can still have an impact on others today.

The Philippines After:
This was one of the best resources that I had. I think someone did this as his or her project. I was mainly on this source because it legit had every single details of this revolution and it was so easy to understand. It had videos, a timeline, pictures, and many more. I’m more of a visual person so I was able to understand it more clearer. It mentioned about another revolution that happened on January 20, 2001. It seems like the Philippines is the master of having a revolution without any violence. A few months later, Gloria Macapagal Arroya became president and she was prepared for it. She then fought against the Arroyo administration because they wanted her to step down but she didn't want to. She continue to fight them until August 1, 2009, which then led to her death.

Describe the Q3BM: what was the assignment?  What did your group decide to do and why?
In this BM we have to talk about relationships. So my group decides that we can make a radio station kind of love guru or love doctor to fix people's relationship. We think that it's pretty funny and easy hence the reason why we wanted to use the idea.

What did you learn from doing this project?

We learned new vocabularies! We also learned new things about spanish grammar and how to use it properly.

How do you feel about your final product?

I think it's okay. I guess we could've did something that will make it more appealing and A+ kind of project.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?

I guess we could have a better script and storyline.

This I Believe: Stop being a hater. Love is love

Posted by Pauline Garcia in English 3 - Pahomov on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 9:33 am
Nowadays people are talking about how a man and a woman can only get married and have a relationship. That there's no such thing as man to man and woman to woman marriage. In my opinion, why are you being a hater? If I'm right there's no law where it states that only a woman and a man can love each other. Like, come on! We live in Philadelphia too! The city of brotherly love. Well I guess thats a double meaning kind of phrase.
A person can love whoever they want to fall in love with. A person can get marry to whoever they wanted to marry. Love is love and there's no gender, kind, or type. If they are not bothering you, why are you going to bother them? All they wanted to do is love. Who doesn't want to fall love anyway? For them loving someone who's the same gender as they are doesn't make them less of a human. Actually, people hating them are the people who's degrading themselves. They're not the problem, the haters are.
People sometimes say that I'm Christian but I like gay people. Yes, I am Christian and yes, I know how to treat them. I treat them equally. All of us are human beings so I am not going to treat them like trash. I believe what I believe and they believe what they believe. I respect whoever they wanted to be in a relationship with. I am not to judge someone. They love someone and I know the pain of someone going against it. I don't want them to have those feelings and neither should be the haters.

I dont think you're going to like it if I stop you from loving someone, right? Treat people the way you want to be treated. In other words. STOP BEING A HATER.

Mi madre tierra by Pauline

Posted by Pauline Garcia in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 11:23 am
  • What did you learn?
I learned new ways to describe things and I also learned that I am a horrible singer.
  • What are you especially proud of?
Finding out what I wanted to say in my song. Other people might have some difficulties on how they wanted their song is going to be talking about. For me, that was the easiest part and the best part because I can just picture the Philippines.

  • What would you change if you could do it over again?
My voice! Also the melody of the song. I was going to aim for it to sound like a lullaby, but it didn't worked.

La risa de los niños pequeños

    Los sonidos de los coches

    La armonía de las aves

    El susurro del viento

    ¿Puede oír esas cosas?

    Hola chico

    ¿Ha estado en la Filipinas?

    ¿Puedes oír el océano?

    ¿Puedes sentir el viento?

    Bienvenidos a mi madre tierra!

    Las islas amada

La gran vista de las montañas

    El flujo de las cataratas

    Las olas del océano

Los campos de maíz de alto

    ¿Ha estado en la Filipinas?

    ¿Puedes oír el océano?

    ¿Puedes sentir el viento?

    Bienvenidos a mi madre tierra!

FACEBOOK EN ESPANOL? ME GUSTAAAA~

Posted by Pauline Garcia in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 4:41 pm
I read Srta. G's post that we can change our facebook language to Spanish for 24 hours and write a feedback about it. At first I didn't want to do it because I'm sure that I'm not going to understand what my facebook page is talking about. However, I thought what am I going to lose?
Right when I changed the language, I went to my home page. Then I fell in love. I saw ME GUSTA. I shall never change my language back to english.
To be honest though, I sometimes get lost because I need to think things through before clicking some buttons. I also learned new words because of what Facebook Spanish taught me. Overall, I like this activity. I learned new things just by being in facebook. Awesome sauce. ME GUSTA

HO to the LA

  • I'm really proud that its easy for me to think what I want to say to my song. So far people like my lyrics and I guess thats a good start!
  • I just want people to look over my lyrics and ask some advice if I need to change anything before I start to record my song.
  • In my song I was just describing what my country looks like. I was talking about the mountains, the ocean, and the corn fields. I also talked about the kids laughing, the cars, and the birds singing. Just to give the listeners some picture and audio image of what I'm talking about.
  • I'm planning to have a mellow or kind of a lullaby.

Hola chico
Ha estado en la Filipinas?
¿Puedes oír el océano?
¿Puedes sentir el viento?

Bienvenidos a mi madre tierra!

~ On the first stanza of the song, the singer is talking to a kid. She's asking if the kid knows about the Philippines and if the kid can feel the things that the singer feels.

~ I was happy about my first draft because I already have an idea on what my song is going to be about. I'm planning to have a ballad. Kind of a poem or song, story telling for short.

~ I wanted to improve some because I'm still thinking on what sounds good for the song.

~ Matching the words to the rhythm of the song.

High School Romance. To be or not to be? By Pauline Garcia

Posted by Pauline Garcia in English 2 - Pahomov on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at 9:58 am
High school is where we experience different things about life. First drama, first crush, first boyfriend, first kiss, and first rejection. This is also the time where the hormones of the teens are on their peak. For example would be making out in the hallway and extreme PDA. Does this affect their education and relationship? Are they passing the school policies? To find the answer I, Pauline Garcia, interviewed a teacher and a student to help me understand and find the answer to the questions.

I'm Bilingual, are you too?

“Hey! I heard you're Filipino! Kamusta ka? My name is Clarice,” said Clarice, the girl in the party.

I said, “Yes I am, I’m good. Hi Clarice my name is Pauline.”

“Oh geez lets not speak in English, I think my nose will bleed soon. Phew! At last! Someone to talk to without thinking if I said the right verb or noun! I have been looking for a Filipino friend in ages!! That’s why when someone said there’s another Filipino in here I went hunting.” She said in Tagalog.

I said, “AAAH! Same here! Oh gosh at first I thought you don’t know how to speak Tagalog, I was disappointed but here we are! Speaking in Tagalog. I only speak tagalog to my relatives because I rarely meet people who can speak Tagalog in here!” After that we were inseparable. People in the party were staring at us because they don’t know what we were talking about. We even started to gossip about the people in the party and we make fun of other people. It feels natural and it is like we know each other since we were kids. Speaking our native language made us have a connection.

Being bilingual is a good thing. Language is not really my major problem because I learned how to speak English in my early years. Filipinos were taught English in school and at home. However, we mostly speak our native language all the time. I know my basic English but I can’t say that I am an expert. I remember the days where I used to struggle to have a proper conversation with my classmates. Yes, I understand them but I have to think of proper English words to say. Up until now I still struggle pronouncing and finding words to express what I want to say and my words sometimes get so complicated and messed up.

When I was reading "Hunger for Memory" by Richard Rodriquez, I had the same feeling that he has back then, the feeling of safety and being "home", the familiar sounds and words that wrap around me when I speak my native language. Rodriguez said, “I was a bilingual child, a certain kind socially disadvantage.” Rodriquez was saying that being a bilingual kid is also hard because you will have a hard time to socialize with people because you are not fluent when you speak their language. I had this feeling before; I wanted to play with my classmates but then I couldn’t because I didn’t know what to say to them so I could join.

I am not the only person who struggles being bilingual. My parents are also bilingual. My parents struggle to speak English more than I do back in the days and sometimes even now, because they were more exposed in our own culture and native language. That is the reason why they can’t pronounce and find the right words that they wan to say. Rodriguez also pointed that out in the story, “It was unsettling to hear my parents struggle with English. Hearing them, I’d grow nervous, my clutching trusts in their protection and power weakened.” In this quote he was saying that when he hear his parents speak in English, he doesn’t feel as protected as he does when his parents speak in their natural language. I also felt the way he did back then and sometimes there are some occasions where I still feel like that. It is not that I feel embarrassed when they can’t speak properly; it is just that I feel vulnerable because they cannot explain things and express themselves right. I feel like I am the one who should be the parent and talk to the people.

In Rodriquez’s words, he said, “I shared with my family a language that was startlingly different from the used in the great city around us.” In this quote, Rodriquez is stating that he is bilingual. I feel the same way he did. Whenever I’m in the house or when my parents and I are outside shopping, I always speak Tagalog. I speak Tagalog when I’m with my family because I feel closer to my culture and I also feel home and protected. I feel natural when I speak my native language. No other people in the city can share the same feeling that I have with my family. However, whenever I speak Tagalog in public, I still feel distant. In Rodriquez’s words, he said, “Nervously, I’d arrive at the grocery store to hear the sounds of the gringo -foreign to me- reminding me that in this world so big, I was a foreigner.” Rodriquez is stating that I can say that I can speak in English but I can’t erase the fact that I am a foreigner.

Being bilingual might be hard at times but it is also a good thing because you are touching two different cultures. You re more exposed to culture than people who only speak one language. Being bilingual might be complicated and difficult to handle but when you speak your native language, you will feel at home and the warmth of your true self.
