Nzinga Suluki-Bey Capstone

Posted by Nzinga Suluki-Bey in Capstone · Estey/Menasion · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 2:29 pm

I wanted to create a capstone that would stay with the SLA community even after I left. After that idea I talked to college counselor, Mrs. Hirschfield. We concluded that the website should be more accessible and visually appealing. I built upon the freshman and sophomore page because the college process shouldn’t start Junior year. After going through what was needed and what needed to be fixed on the old website I made a template that would bring all of my and Mrs. Hirshfield’s ideas together. While making the template I also sent out a survey to understand how the student body felt about the current website and where they wanted it to improve. Most of the students said that the website wasn’t appealing and they could never find anything. They students gave great praise to the content, but also thought that as a freshman they didn’t think the website was for them. The website also has the bulletins in order by date and you can see all of them at once instead of scrolling through a document. Their is a full page of test prep and how to link college board and khan academy. There are videos of seniors going over their college process so that students know what they are headed for their senior year. There’s a video on the homepage that goes over how to navigate the website and if someone is looking for something how to find it. I learned that with this website the college process won’t be that hard.

“5 Questions To Help You Design an Effective College Website.” Verified Studios, 8 Feb. 2017, www.verifiedstudios.com/effective-college-website/. This article is more about the tech of a website and if it’s marketable. This resource gives a lot of background on how to make your brand create a web presence. It goes in depth with asking the person questions and if this strategy might work for them. For example 47% of people click off a website that takes too long. If websites don’t work well on social media or isn’t presentable on other devices most teens won’t go on it. A website must also have good visuals because most teens don’t read. The article goes over good design. How does your website break up code and how does it go over the information a person is seeking? This a helpful tool for my capstone because it lets me understand how I can improve the design of the current website.

Dix, Willard. “10 Ways To Make The College Application Process Less Painful, More Successful.” Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 9 Feb. 2016, www.forbes.com/sites/willarddix/2016/02/09/on-your-marks-get-set/#7dbf12557c70. This article goes over the stress of what college does to students and how parents can distress their children. It goes over the process of actually applying to how to not put all the money obligations on the student. This article is specifically for adults. You can see that by how it is directed at what people could say or do and how other adults or parents should refrain from asking about majors and not speaking for you student/child. The first two suggestions are for parents and their students. The article unlike most college processes don’t mention the counselor. Your counselor is your allie and your shield from everything. A lot of people also forget about recommendations although they could save an application. This article will help finalize the content and what should or shouldn’t be stressed in a person’s college process.

“Helping Your Teen Decide What to Do After High School (for Parents).” Edited by Steven Dowshen, KidsHealth, The Nemours Foundation, June 2018, kidshealth.org/en/parents/after-hs.html. Kids Health is a popular website that most adults use for children and then a lot of high school students use the website to help break down certain topics. This particular article talks about how efficient students need to be before junior year. It used to be that students could look for schools a few months before senior year or during senior year. Now schools are harder and they want more than just grades. This article talks more directly about the process of finding schools or what we call “best fit”. Fit means economically, academically and socially. The colleges could mean all three of students and parents likings or some could meet just two. This article breaks down what students need to do and how far in advance. It gives an intro course almost into Sophomore and Junior year. This article will be more of a background on what students need. In my capstone it will not be anything big since I have the resources that go over this topic.

Hess, Abigail. “The FAFSA Is Now Open-Here’s Why Every Student Should Fill It Out.” CNBC, CNBC, 2 Oct. 2018, www.cnbc.com/2017/09/28/why-every-student-should-fill-out-the-fafsa.html. This article from CNBC goes over why students of every economical background should fill out FAFSA. FAFSA is a way colleges and universities know how much financial aid to give a student and certain students are eligible for what is called a pell grant. A Pell Grant is given to people who make under $30,000 a year. CNBC brings up the fact that people who make a lot of money may not want to apply because they will only receive loans, but the contonter argument is that child can be independent and receive money next year. The FAFSA is a universal financial aid that many students don’t want to fill out, but most schools require that you do. With my capstone I hope to make this very apparent and explain FAFSA in a more detailed way and lay out a students many options.

Hirschfield, Karina. Personal Interview. 23 January 2019 Ms. Hirschfield is a college counselor with Science Leadership Academy. She is currently the only college counselor of Philadelphia that has a CAL Program or College Access Leaders. Ms. Hirschfield will help with my website for the college magazine.

“Home.” PhillyGoes2College.Org, phillygoes2college.org/. “Philly Goes 2 College” is another nonprofit in Philadelphia that helps middle school, high school, and adults with higher education/learning. This website breaks down a lot of the necessary tools for the college process. It gives information on financial aid, conversations about which college to choose, how to find money outside of what schools can give and they break everything down by grade. This site is visually appealing and you can find everything easily. This website also has scholarships which allows parents to use this site for their high school student who is less fortunate. I will use this source has reference for my website and magazine. The content is strong, but more geared towards adults.

Hoover, Eric. “What They Want .” The New York Times, 1 Nov. 2017, www.nytimes.com/2017/11/01/education/edlife/what-college-admissions-wants.html. The New York Times wrote an article on what colleges want. It isn’t a spelled out of each college in America, but it goes over key points and how times are changing. The overarching information is that colleges no longer want the student with the highests test-scores or the biggest gpa. Colleges and universities want a well-rounded individual that cannot just add to their community, but also set their school up for success. Each new freshmen admitted is a person who can market their school. If a student isn’t a good representation of the school you probably shouldn’t be there. This article also pinpoints that the college process is insensitive. If you aren’t the student their looking for then that isn’t the school for you. The article does a deep dive into how colleges are trying to go beyond the classroom to find the perfect student by adding different requirements on their college admissions materials. Some schools are allowing portfolios to see if students are good presenters. This article gives me a good insight into the application process which could add a lot to any website or magazine on the college process.

Mayfield, Lindsey, and Julie Mayfield. “7 Tips To Make a College Decision as a Family.” U.S. News & World Report, U.S. News & World Report, www.usnews.com/education/blogs/twice-the-college-advice/2012/03/13/7-tips-to-make-a-college-decision-as-a-family. The US News is a good source for the college process, but this blog specifically talks about the decision of choosing the place you live for four years. Every college is different and this article directly says “There is probably more than one school at which you can thrive.” This a very important thing that most seniors don’t realise. This article goes on to say that seniors must beware that you have to eat, sleep and communicate at the school you go to. The article breaks down choosing a school from a money perspective that no matter your circumstance the amount of aid you receive is an input into your school choice. The current magazine on the college process goes over a list for choosing the best school. The thing that needs to be improved is in this article; it needs to be for students and students have to relate to it. They don’t want a whole bunch of questions they won’t someone to spell things out for them. I’m specifically going to use this resource to help students choose a school through the website and magazine I am doing.

Selingo, Jeffrey. “Colleges Are Tracking Prospective Students’ Digital Footprints.” The Atlantic, Atlantic Media Company, 17 Apr. 2017, www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2017/04/how-colleges-find-their-students/522516/. This article gave an insight into what most colleges/universities are looking for. The article first follows Saint Louis University which had a demographic that wasn’t very diverse and they all came from the same area. The reason a lot of schools are trying to broaden their demographics is because their graduation rates are decreasing. A colleges graduation rate is very important because it shows the type of students that go their. This article specifically went over how a school like Saint Louis increased their graduation rate and a broader demographic by buying from big data or high school students. A lot colleges get 40% of their information from SAT’s and ACT test when students feel out surveys about majors and different schools. This data allowed schools to know which students they want and which students they need. A lot of schools used this data and now have 20% of students who are eligible for pell grants which means more colleges or universities accept students who make less than $30,000 a year. This information from this article would most likely go on the website I will create because it will give an insight into a college mind and how they market to students. This also allows high school students to know that colleges are look at you when they send you marketable things or even emails.

“Step Up to College.” Home - Philadelphia Futures, www.philadelphiafutures.org/publications/step-up-to-college-guide. The Philadelphia Futures is a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia that has a college process magazine called “Step Up to College.” This source will help me better understand the college process on an educational level other than a personal. I can use resources and explanations on their website for my college process magazine. This source also gives me insight into what high school students want in a magazine and on a website and what is beneficial to donors and adults.

Memory Reconstruction

Creative Writing:

“Remember when we found money in your mom's closet.” Azeezah says while laughing.

“OMG! Yes and then it magically disappeared the next day.” My stomach hurt just from thinking about it.

“I swear your mom probably thinks we thought it was fake.”

“She’ll never find out that we knew it was real. We were good children because I wanted to stash it.” I said while picking up a box and running to hide it as if it too had money in it. Azeezah just laughs at me.

“Yeah right.” Azeezah rolls her eyes, but not in disbelief.

My cousin and I used to play dress up in our mom's closet all the time. We would open all the shoe boxes and walk around almost breaking our ankles.

“Oh, I wonder what that is.” Azeezah pointed at the big purple box.

“I don’t know, but let's open it” I went towards the box in an attempt to open it.

“Wait, Kemba, I think we should….” Azeezah trailed off.

“You think we should what..?” I looked up at my cousin.

“I want to open the box.” Azeezah folded her hands over the big overcoat.

“Yea..No, but we can do it together.”

“Fine.”

“One… Two… Three” Azeezah and I both counted together and when we opened the box we found what we liked to call cash. I’d never held money in my hand. I was too young to even have money. The money wasn’t crisp, but it wasn’t old either. The money smelled clean which made no sense at the time. We didn’t know what to do, but we both knew this was our secret.  We laugh about it to this day. We were children then six and seven years old, acting like we were nine and ten. It still amazes me how finding my moms money makes us laugh. I mean it is funny, but it shouldn’t be a secret. We keep it that way because anytime we dressed up we would secretly go looking for money or anything of value not knowing that the clothes we put on were worth so much more than we thought.

Author's Note:

Margaret Atwood and Ken Kesey both didn’t use dialogue, but when they did it was purposeful and it filled the whole scene. They made sure the dialogue didn’t leave anything unknown. I made sure in my story I used a lot of dialogue because I wanted to show the difference in time as well as how impactful the memory is. Ken Kesey used a lot of metaphors in his writing while also leaving the reader thinking about things he wasn’t specific about. I wanted readers to be able to think of their childhood selves and fit it into my story.

Marketing Color

Posted by Nzinga Suluki-Bey in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 3:08 am

Who makes advertisements? Is it companies? Is it celebrities? Is advertisements made by popular demand? An advertisement is a piece of marketing that companies or industries show to invite people to buy their products or to voice a message. Companies owned and operated by white people are usually companies that aren’t expected to use black people on their advertisements. There is actually a myth that black owned and operated businesses gain more money when people don’t know that they are black businesses. There is a demand for diversity in business and advertisements because people are growing more aware of what race means.

Only 19% of ads that people see in their daily lives show minority groups. The world is mostly made of minority groups yet they are only shown less than a quarter of the time. People want to see themselves. Why is at that white people see more of themselves yet their is less of them? Queen Latifah a rapper, brand ambassador and actress is one artists trying to bring diversity to advertisements In 2006, Covergirl asked Queen Latifah to be a brand ambassador for Covergirl. Queen Latifah took Covergirls offer and started their first ever  line of makeup exclusively for minority groups called, Queen Collection. Queen Latifah isn’t the only celebrity realizing that white companies need to change their advertising techniques. Marketing Week, did a piece on new research coming out about companies not having minority groups in their ads. The statistic were so crazy that Marketing Week also did different videos and showed their audience the reproductions of the lack of minority groups in advertisement.

The Chicago Tribune did a cut throat piece on black owned businesses and their hidden secret, their owned by black people with all white employees. Of course black owned businesses never lied, if asked if they were the owner they told people the truth. Most black owned businesses see the difference between themselves talking to their white counterparts and white people seeing someone of the same race as them. Racisms isn’t just something people acknowledge and move on from. Racism is hindering black owned businesses. Research done by the Chicago Tribune saw that 55% of black people with household incomes more than $50,000 wanted more black owned businesses. In the study they also found that white people saw black owned businesses as selling products only for black people. Assistant Professor from Chicago State University says doesn’t see any advantage. There isn’t any advantage because as Parker (who is the former operator of a website that promoted black-owned businesses) put it, eventually black CEOs come out as the CEO’s.

People claim their nationality, ethnicity or race all the time. More than ever knowing who someones is demands on things such as their race. People buy things from big and small companies all the time. It would be nice to see minority groups in this advertisements done by big white companies. It would also be good to know if the store you are buying from is black owned. Knowing who you are reflects how you act, so why not know that the stories you love also like you.  Businesses and advertisements aren’t any different because they both want maximum profit off of their customers. Diversity in business and advertising would benefit companies with money. Showing of black owned or black commercials are good. Diversity is great.

This is my best possible 2fer because I wrote a topic that actually interests me. I like to talk about my own community and business. I like to explore business and what that means for people of color or minorities In this 2fer I used less examples and really explored each reason. I also really wanted a coherent thesis so that it connected to what I was trying to prove and say. I feel that my paper was rushed, but it still is the best possible 2fer because this paper is me in the rawest form. I love business and how it interacts with race.

"Will you marry me?" "No."

Posted by Nzinga Suluki-Bey in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Monday, April 16, 2018 at 5:52 am

William Shakespeare has written many books that have captivated many audiences around the world. The book “The Taming of the Shrew” isn’t any different. It is a love story with a few twists and turns. The two many love stories are Petruchio and Katherine. Petruchio and Katherine were made in hell for each other. At first, they fight and Katherine doesn’t want the marriage until Petruchio “tames” her into submission. The other love story is one of love at first site. Bianca and Lucentio fall madly in love with each other, but not with others trying to take Bianca away from Lucentio. Bianca is Katherine’s little sister and she was pursued by two people throughout some parts of the book. Bianca chose Lucentio because he was true to himself, unlike her other suitors.

The movie “Marry Me” is about a woman named Rae Ann Carter who wants a fairytale kind of love. Throughout the movie, Rae Carter finds herself and starts to understand what true love is. During all this truth-seeking she also is being pursued by three men who want to marry her without evening knowing her or what she truly wants. In “The Taming of the Shrew” audiences only see a small part of Katherine and Bianca’s relationship, but it has bearing on the story because it dictates who gets married first. In the movie “Marry Me” Rae and her sister argue about marriage and what true love is and if it exists. The relationship Rae has with two of her suitors is the same as Bianca and the men trying to marry her. These texts show that people or characters fall in love with their “perfect” person to have a marriage full of love.

In the movie, “Marry Me”, Rae Ann Carter falls in love with three different men. The images above are from three different scenes of the movie, but in each scene, Rae falls in love with Luke(far right), Harry(middle), Carter(far right). Each man represents someone she should and shouldn’t marry out of love. Luke is the perfect guy because her family likes him, but he could be crazy. Harry is rich and can give Rae the dream of becoming a painter, but he is Luke’s best friend. Carter is her old boyfriend who she wanted to marry and he left her for frogs. Each man Rae wants to marry isn’t perfect. Rae is someone the audiences can relate to because when people fall in love they head over heels for the “right person.” Even Bianca who had two suitors chose the Hortensio because he was the guy she likes. Of course in Bianca’s story, she wasn’t in love. Rae in “Marry Me” is in love with guys she never thought existed. Every single guy is who she want’s and that is where “Marry Me” and “The Taming of the Shrew” aren’t similar. One book is about falling for someone who you like because of how they make you feel. Whereas “Marry Me” is about love at first sight with the perfect person.

Bianca: Gamut I am the ground of all accord:

[A re] to plead Hortensios passion;

[B mi] Bianca, take him for thy lord,

[C fa ut,] that loves with all affection;

(Act 3, Scene 2, Line 77 - 80)

In Shakespeare “The Taming of the Shrew” Bianca is being courted by two men Hortensio and Lucentio. They are disguised as tutors so they can get to Bianca better. Bianca does enjoy Hortensio and instead does n’t, like Lucentio.

In the book “The Taming of the Shrew” readers see Bianca for a few pages struggle with which suitor to choose. Bianca and Rae have similar stories, but that’s it. Bianca knows who she wants to get to know before the readers do. Bianca doesn’t fall for the right man. Bianca is a real-life scenario. Most people don’t believe love, at first sight, is real and so Bianca’s story makes more sense. Bianca likes someone and waits until after Katherine is married to elope with Hortensio. Although Bianca never knew Hortensio was actually Lucentio; he was still who she wanted minus the money. In some stories love at first sight is important to show audiences what it feels and looks like. Well, Shakespeare clearly decided to shake things up a bit. He decides in “The Taming of the Shrew” that love, at first sight, didn’t exist. He did it this way to show love comes with someone who you want; not things you know before you actually get to know them. This dilemma of knowledge about someone else’s comes up in “Marry Me.” Rae and Luke are at a restaurant and Rae says, “I don’t know you enough to marry you.” Even though both stories tell love stories very differently they each reflect each other in some way. Yes, “The Taming of the Shrew” shows know love at first sight, but Bianca says she has passions for Hortensio that could mean love or maybe the author wanted us to wait to find out they fall in love. Both texts could represent love at first sight, but only one shows how love to someone(s) can be difficult.

Screenshot 2018-04-10 at 1.53.22 PM
Screenshot 2018-04-10 at 1.53.22 PM

Rae Ann Carter has a sister named Trudy. During the movie, Trudy is pregnant, married and a divorce. Audiences are in awe of the sister’s relationship. In this scene, we are at Trudy’s baby shower with her friends. Rae is so excited about Luke. Luke is the guy Rae is falling in love with. She tells the group “He asked to marry me.” They all just look at her at first until Trudy says, “When will I get to meet him?” No one is perfect, so people say, but when your a man asking for someone’s hand in marriage you must be spotless. Trudy who is Rae’s sister doesn’t like Luke because he is wild and not boring. During the baby shower, the girls talk about how the perfect husband to marry is boring. That man should be boring or they cheat. In this moment of the movie, love, at first sight, doesn’t exist. It doesn’t exist because you must marry someone boring if you want to be a little happy. “Marry Me” often wants audiences to know all sides of a story. Unlike ‘The Taming of the Shrew,” after Katherine gives a long speech about how women should act towards their men every woman is looking at Katherine crazy because she used to be less obedient and submissive than them all. “The Taming of the Shrew” is a mans love story, not women. “Marry Me” is both a man’s love story and a woman’s love story. We see the stereotypes of how women think and then we see how men act when a woman doesn’t want them. The belief that someone is your perfect husband is insane. It’s insane because “love” teaches us that no one is perfect, which “Marry Me” reflects audiences. People fall in love at first sight because they believe that person is perfect to them.

Bianca: Unbind my hands, I'll pull them off myself,...Or what you will command me will I do, So well I know my duty to my elders.

Katherine: Of all thy suitors here I charge thee tell. Whom thou lov'st best. See thou dissemble not.

Bianca: If you affect him, sister, here I swear. I'll plead for you myself, but you shall have him.

(Act 2, Scene 11, Line 4 - 15)

In this scene of “The Taming of the Shrew” Katherine has tied down Bianca until she tells her everything she knows. Katherine is selfish of Bianca because she knows she can have any guy she wants and that she follows rules unlike herself. Although some people interpret this scene very differently. Some say it’s just a sister thing others believe Katherine is trying to show Bianca that she already loves someone. “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Marry Me” may appear to be drastically different. However, once someone is able to look past the obvious differences they will notice certain similarities. “Marry Me” and “The Taming of the Shrew” both have a sibling rivalry that is a result of love. In “Marry Me”, Trudy acts like she wants what is best for Rae. However, she does not want the spotlight taken away from her. Trudy is similar to Katherine in this regard because she faces sibling rivalry over marriage. Another way they are similar is because Trudy will start an argument, but audiences never realize where her ideas or her actions came from. Katherine is the same way with Bianca. Although Bianca doesn’t know who she’s going to marry or who wants to marry her; she shouldn’t be tied to a chair for people simply liking her.

Although Bianca doesn’t know who she’s going to marry or who wants to marry her; she shouldn’t be tied to a chair for people simply liking her. All movies have a great beginning and a great ending, this is true. “Marry Me” isn’t any different. “Marry Me” shows first love at first sight by Luke, who is a man. In most stories, we don’t get the man and woman’s perspective. “The Taming of the Shrew” we only get a mans perspective on what is going on. The two texts differ in that love, at first sight, is a “womanly thing.” In comparing the two texts the scene where Luke says he will marry Rae is also like when Petruchio said he would marry Katherine. Now Luke and Petruchio are totally different characters. If anything Luke is more like Hortensio, but in this scene he is Petruchio. In this scene, it shows his wanting for something. Almost like if anything were to get in his way he would be angered just like Petruchio. Love, at first sight, exists in men as seen in “Marry Me.” Love at first sight also must be with someone people don’t realize is the person they always dreamed.

Each text tells a different version of love at first sight. Sometimes each text also disproves that love at first sight exists, but each story show’s that someone a character likes or is “perfect” for them is who they should marry. In “The Taming of the Shrew” Bianca doesn’t choose Hortensio because he is the obvious choice, but she has strong feelings for him and wants to explore them. “Marry Me” Rae isn’t any different with her three suitors who she loves sometimes and sometimes she is confused about what is she wants. People have to like or have strong feelings for someone or believe they do to have experienced love at first sight; that is dictated by “Marry Me.” Both texts are different and similar when it comes to love, but they can agree that people must have the perfect person to have a marriage of love.

My Mother...

Posted by Nzinga Suluki-Bey in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 12:42 am
People say your mother is your best friend. She's a person you lean on. Your mother is like the earth. She is supposed to provide the breath you breathe. Your mother is supposed to shape and care for you. I guess that's always what I thought my mom was to me. My mother was and is my best friend. There is no one else like her. It's impossible to find anyone who looks, talks and walks the same way she does. See my mother goes and went through the same things I went and go through as a young woman. So when she broke from the same story of her childhood it hurt me. Maybe my mother didn't want us to be the same; maybe my mother wanted something better or nothing at all.
I was born into a family like none other. We didn’t have any mixed children or people who married anyone who wasn’t black. We hadn’t travelled the world thousands of times. We aren’t Christian although both my grandparents family were heavily into Christ. I come from an African American Muslim family. My grandparents started the biggest Masjid in the Philadelphia area. My family is the center of my world and will always be the biggest part of my life. But my family is also sometimes my only enemy in the world. As Muslims, we are taught to only fear Allah. For the longest time that was my only fear in life. Until my fear became a for thought and the only thing I could think about was my mother and sister.
When I made it clear to my mother she needed to come home or me and my sister needed to stay with her, she didn’t listen to me. I don’t know how I was supposed to take that, but it was a hit to my heart that cut deep. In that moment I became my sister’s mother, not her older sister. I became my dad's personality to lean on. It made me the person I am today. There are still cracks in me and my mother's relationship, but I don’t think we can heal those until she learns how to apologize, but what do I know. She tells me all the time “I’m just a kid. Kids  know nothing.” Of course, my mother thinks I didn’t know my dad and she had relationship problems. Most parents always want to live in a bliss of my child is stupid when really I knew more than she did. I knew my parents weren’t going to last before my mother knew how to run from her problems. My mother eventually took what I knew and went through, for face value because that's all she could do.
My parents aren't everybody else's parents, but then again no bodies parents are the same. I lived in a house full of love, yes, but it was a hard kinda love. Clearly, I knew I was loved. Getting a divorce isn’t bad. I have no regrets as of today for why my parents left each other. My parents made it seem like them getting a divorce was normal. It was normal for me. To this day it rolls off of my tongue easily. I don’t care. I have fallen in love all over again with my sister because although they are our parents my sister and I have learned to rely on each other because we don’t know who is going to be with us next. During my parent’s divorce, my sister lived with my mother and I lived with my dad. That was a time that I walked through life like a zombie because my sister was my lifeline.
I previously said my mother leaving me and my sister made me mature and that's true, but my goals and dreams came together on December 10, 2009. That was the day my sister was born. I had 11 siblings I barely saw, but we loved and cared for each other. When my sister became number 12, it hit me that my siblings all had each other and I had no one. Before my sister, it was me and my mother. The only person I could lean on and tell my truths to was her. Then my mother got pregnant and the world rushed at me; I had to run with it. I was eight years old when my sister was born. Thinking back to when I was eight is hard. My parents were always happy and we smiled. My father and I were closer.
I still remember the day my mother told my dad she was pregnant. Mind you my parents were actually trying to get pregnant this time. Little did I know. My mother told my dad and he told her to stop lying. I busted it out laughing, my dad is a true jokester. If this was a time of kings and queens my father would be the jester. After I told my dad it was true he told me it wasn’t. Then I didn’t know if he was playing, I mean for a few seconds I thought maybe my mother cheated until he started laughing. My dad stood in our old kitchen laughing at me in awe face with my mouth hanging over waiting for someone to give me a drink of water. I will forever remember that day. It was the last time my dad and I laughed in that kitchen. The year 2008 was a fast one. One moment my father and I were laughing in the kitchen next came 2009 and my mother was having my baby sister.
Unlike most people think I actually was afraid of my sister. I didn’t hold her. I didn’t feed her nor did I try and wash her up. I stayed away from my sister for a few months until I was forced to love her. She became my baby that was alive. She breathed and ate and went to the bathroom. My sister was everything I didn’t ask for. I never wanted a sister, I always secretly wanted a brother. I still do want a brother, well little brother. I have two older brothers who I love very dearly.  Having a sibling was a dream for me because I asked for one so many times. I had many siblings, but I always felt like an only child. I can’t explain having so much of something, but not believe you do.  As I got older so did my sister. My sister even today follows me. She knows that no matter what we go through or have been through that I will never leave her. I will never give up on her because she is my lifeline. My sister has never felt abandonment from not one of our parents and I am happy for her.
I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Although my mother is back in my life and for good. I lost my father after the gain of my mother. I always wonder if my mother never came back into my life would I be any different. Would I be more hateful? Would I be less motivated? I look back on when I used to ponder about if my parents got a divorce who I would live with. I always said I would live with both my mother and father. My father and mother together add great characteristics and life lessons to my life that I have learned to balance. Then when I actually had to choose, I chose my father. Whether I knew it then, I know it now. My father's 12 children are his lifeline and I don’t ever want to take away what helps motivate someone to get up. For most of my first year in high school, I was independent. I had no mother. I had no father. It was just me and my baby sister. I guess not having my parents did create a hole somewhere that I can’t see and won’t feel. At the end of my first year in high school, my mother and I prepared our relationship and every day we seal a crack. My mother will always be the first best friend I ever had, but we haven’t been best friends in a while. I guess me and my mother have finally understood the roles of mother and daughter. Maybe my mother didn't want us to be the same; maybe my mother wanted something better or nothing at all. My mother told me she doesn’t want me to grow up like her, she wants me to be better. I am my mother's second chance and I hope with her back in my life I will be what she dreams and wished for.

Q3 - Mural

Posted by Nzinga Suluki-Bey in Spanish 2 · Hernandez · A Band on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 8:35 am

¡Hola! Soy Nieves Bey.

Nzinga Bey

Soy yo

Mis abuelos de el padre es inmigrantes

La verdad

Producto de una historia antigua

Un murciélago que emigra

Veo la gente hermosa

Saboreo dulces suenos de mi papá

Oigo la verdad de mi familia muerta

Toco el terremoto de mi corazón descalzo

Huelo la verdad de inmigrantes

Leo el barco de personas

Corro en mi corazón descalzo

Necesito mi historia, en mi carne

Nunca olvido mi tierra

Somos productos de Africa

Somos mixtos

Hablamos inglés

La lengua de berenjena queso parmesano

No somos Americanos. Vivimos en América

Mi familia y yo nunca lo olvidamos

Mi historia es parte de mi

Macbeth Creative Project - Nzinga, Sharron

In English class we are doing a project on Macbeth. My partner Sharron and I have decided to do a playbill on Macbeth the play. We are choosing to make a Theatrical Playbill with a mask of symbolic representation of Macbeth. We are choosing to do this because we want to show the play an artist's point of view. We also want the play to stick out by what people see and read. We also liked to be the second people to create a playbill, we like to be different. Our playbill is centered around the play Macbeth; therefore we decide to have a theme for our playbill. For our playbill we have decided to have Shakespeare an anniversary of all his most famous plays. The ads will be of: Romeo and Juliet, Othello, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. We chose those plays because it includes death and love in its purest form. Most of Shakespeare's plays have a hate or love or disruption of some kind.In Macbeth it has lots of hate of oneself and disruption of nature, and in our playbill we wanted to reflect on that a lot.

As you know for every playbill, the cover is everything. We decided for our cover that we wanted to have a metaphor for what you see isn't, what you get. With that saying, we decided to also use a quote from the book. We chose Lady Macbeth and Macbeth to be the metaphor, because those characters changed the most. Lady Macbeth is a lady and ladies back then were supposed to be innocent, but she wasn't after they killed Macduff. We wanted her to look the most out of ordinary. One side has all her makeup and she looks perfect. Then the other side shows her true self, she is crying and broken. Macbeth was a tough person before he killed all his friends and people he was supposed to guard, so he has less going on on his face. One side has a mark that's gray and the other side looks like he is going threw war. We wanted our cover to reflect the metaphor of the whole play.

Since we have a theme for our playbill we decided on a theater in Minnesota that featured all of Shakespeare's plays. Its called the Guthrie Theater. The theater has an open concept, so the audience can see the play from all the different sides. Each actor we chose, as you can see is from United Kingdom. We wanted the play to symbolize Shakespeare's legacy, and since he is from the United Kingdom, we wanted all of the actors to be as well. All our actors also have been in big television shows that are about the United Kingdom's royal families.

A traditional playbill shows the stage during the show not on paper, but this in a traditional playbill. We chose five different scenes from all five acts. Each scene has different form of a stage set. It shows the audience in the front, but each scene/act shows you the different forms of how we visualize the scenes. We chose the scenes that portray both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth in a way of goodness and in times of war. The clothing we chose was from Scottish and English times. We wanted the clothes to reflect all characters, to make sure no one was left out.

In conclusion, we wanted to go deeper in the book itself. We wanted to dig in and find all the emotions and hidden thoughts and feelings that the author wanted us to get out of it. In the project itself we wanted to and made sure that we contribute that. Our process thinking was to look deeper than the words on the page. Deeper than what we got out of the class.

Two spies in Argentina have caught wind of a bomb going off at a restaurant called: La Brigada. The two spies are women and the bombers are two servers. The spies don't know why the servers want to bomb the restaurant, therefore the spies go to La Brigada. When they get their they are too late, but wait, did you realize the spy and the owner of the restaurant were the same person.

Tech class this quarter is awesome! We have watched two videos about the impact of the internet and the digital world. In this post I will be talking to you about the video Digital Nation. If you want to learn more keep reading, be prepared for lots to read. Digital Nation is the continuation of the virtual frontier. How it affects us and how it becomes the center of our attention, and also the internet may help/hurt the world. During this video we talked about army recruits via gaming, and in the video they showed all the things that might hurt people via the internet. This video is called a documentary which children our age don't watch because they pack information in like a balloon filling up with air. We should watch them because it tells us about everything we already know, but don't want to pay attention to. Videos like this help people see their reality and how it affects us and how it should not. Ms.Hull asked how we would be with the internet if we were to be future parents, and I thought long and hard about my answer. Here it is: ¨I think by putting rules in place will keep them safe, but also showing them how you trust them. To always tell them when they start to look at sites that might affect their health and wellness. I don't want to be like the parents who kept the computer in the kitchen, but I also don't want to be the parent who lets their child do whatever on the computer. I want to be the future who has a give and take relation when dealing with the internet. Such as: the parents of the girl who expressed herself through picture art. In order for her to trust them with what she was doing, they first had to understand. At first the parents didn't until the realized how the internet brought something out in their daughter, then they excepted.¨ I think parents of this age or even us will never fully grasp the internet and its affects on our world or future generations. I think the one think parents assume children know the rules of the internet, but we don´t, we only know popular. If parents set rules then we would get stuck, but sometimes you can´t always put blame on others. The importance of internet safety is so big now because children in the USA can have friends all the way in Spain and that can be ok. Safety is the one thing we need to think about when opening any device. Trust is important when on the computer, if you don trust your child then your child doesn't trust you with their social life.

Who I Am? Pt.2 - Nzinga Suluki - Bey

Tech project 2
When being criteria I decide to change some of my pictures and enlarge all my pictures. I also decided to change the background to a different blue. I also made my slide background blue. I like this slide better because my pictures work better and I understand it more than when I first made my slide. The flow of the color background blends in with the words. Also people will understand the quote threw the pictures. Hope you like my new slide!

Who Am I? - Nzinga Bey

Tech project (2)

Maya Angelou once said When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time. And that quote will stick with me all my life as well as the on one my slide. I can describe my self in thirty different ways. I chose to write words and use pictures. I like to show not tell.

Design process:

I decided to have a 50/50 slide. It shows a quote and then images. I decided to have a color contrast because I wanted the slide to flow nicely. I chose a light blue and white because a lot of my pictures are dark and I wanted my slide to be lively. As you can see I didn't use my name in the slide because I didn't want to have to much repetition. I believe my pictures are spaced out evenly by how much I like or care about them. My word font is big enough ,so people see the words along with the pictures. I wanted what I said to not over power anything else I wanted it to be equal symmetry in the mind.

Who am I ONLINE? Nzinga

Posted by Nzinga Suluki-Bey in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at 12:51 pm
Tech project

In this class we watched a video about bullying. But in this video it told us how to be better than bullying and how to outsmart it. In this video it taught us about the eye emoji. The emoji tells that person that what they are doing isn't good and you see them. I know with this video it brung up children bullying other children in pre-k. You know how its that one student who is always in the front of the line and is the teachers pet. The teacher or the student may not see it, but that is bullying.

Online I am a good person. It doesn't show anything inappropriate because my name is Nzinga. Its stands for power, strength and brave. Under my name it pulls up my year at business school/class. I guess people would perceive me as accomplished and privileged because in the picture I was the only black person in the whole picture. It also shows how thankful I must be for my life as well. The goal of internet trolls is stay away from them or if they appear, stay calm. I believe the positive is only one thing, keeping yourself safe, I don't think there are any other reasons. If you aren't in trouble you shouldn't be hiding.

My Home Network, Suluki-Bey

Posted by Nzinga Suluki-Bey in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 10:30 am

My home network is different from others because all my family  members use wifi. We don't have a router with Verizon. My LAN has lots of devices. It includes 9 phones, two computers, xbox and wii. I learned a lot about how the internet was created. I learned a lot about closed and open networks. Closed networks are what we still use today although it is getting closer everyday to an open network. I know that every network is different, but the process is the same because each company has there own signature processor with the internet.
