Q4 Art Portfolio

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in Art Advanced - Hull - a2 on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 10:20 pm
Hello, my name is Mingxue Zheng. The following slide show will contain the artworks that I have done in the fourth quarter of my senior art class.

This quarter, all students will be creating their own projects.

First Project: Create a Mosaic Rose Drawing
Second Project: Create Mask Paintings
Third Project: Crayon Art
Fourth Project: Flower Vase Painting

I found the assignment this quarter to be challenging because it was my first time doing crayon art and mosaic rose drawing.

Among all of the projects, I am proud of the mosaic rose because it was the first time that the rose actually looked like a rose. The color combination is made up of warm colors. It gives off a summer vibe.

The most difficult project is the mask painting. I chose to create two Chinese Opera mask paintings. The Chinese Opera masks are so detailed, that it makes it harder for me to draw and space out the elements in the masks.

Overall, I love this class. I will continue to draw and paint in college because art is one of my prized hobbies.

Mingxue Zheng Capstone

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in Capstone - Best - Wed on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 11:57 pm
In my life in America, I experienced discrimination, language issues, and other complications just like any other immigrants. As an immigrant, I always wanted to help my fellow immigrants. So, I decided to join the Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition during the summer. Every Mondays and Fridays, I helped new citizens with their voter registration. My ability to speak Mandarin allowed me to register Chinese immigrants who were either reserved or ineloquent in English. While volunteering, I gained organization and logistics skills by keeping track of the number of newly registered voters after each naturalization ceremony.

During the fall, I participated in phone banks every afternoon on Thursdays and Wednesdays for three months. In each session, I connect with advocators and immigrants. I had become increasingly knowledgeable about the current issues that current immigrations are facing.

As I became more devoted to the program, I was inspired to create my capstone project on immigration reform. I worked with Maria Sotomayor, the program coordinator, and Maria’s coworkers, Sundrop Carter and Taja Towne, to create a website. The website includes information about the immigration histories in the U.S., three PICC staff interviews videos, and a Diversity Photography Gallery that will remind us the importance of immigrants in the U.S.

As a result of this project, I was able to improve my photography and video editing skills and as well as my leadership skills. I hope this project will educate the public more about immigration and gather more volunteers to support the immigrant communities.

Q3 Art Portfolio

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in Art Advanced - Hull - a2 on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 7:15 pm
Hello, my name is Mingxue Zheng. The following slide show will contain the artworks that I have done in the third quarter of my senior art class.

As a “middle” I completed...

1.) Abstract Art piece

2.) Self Portrait with Indian Ink

3.) Value Assignment

4.) Basic Shapes Assignment

5.) Animal Sketch

I found the assignments this quarter to be challenging, but nevertheless interesting. This is my first time sketching an abstract piece. I made an mask with two sides. Inside the mask, you could see spiderwebs, checkerboards, shirt collars, neckties, and etc. My favorite painting this quarter is the self portrait. Comparing to the self portrait I did in the first quarter, it is much better. Others could actually tell that it is me!

The value and animal shape assignments are very useful practices to create the animal drawing. I learned how to create three dimensional objects by creating illusions with shadows and shadings. The animal sketch (lion) is the best animal sketch that I ever did.

I improved a lot compare to the first two quarters. I started to take more of my time perfecting my drawings and art starts to became one of my prized hobbies.

Q2 Art Portfolio

Hello, My name is Mingxue Zheng and the following slide show will contain the three artwork and one photograph that I've created in the second quarter of my senior art class. Our class is divided up into three groups, passing, middle, and FAS (future art student). As a "middle" I need to complete...

1.) Art Collage (8x11")
2.) Fabric Drawing (8x11")
3.) Edited Photo
4.) Illustrating a piece of writing from Children's books.

The first artwork that I was so hyped up about is the collage. I never did a collage that needs to convey a deeper meaning before. It took me 2-3 days to formulate ideas for the collage.

My collage should be simple and visually appealing. There should be a sharp contrast as well. So, I did a "Hot & Cold" collage with a grandma crossing between the cold and hot terrane of the collage. On the cold terrane there is a lot of black and white landscapes. To add a pop of color, I added a series of blue butterflies so it will not be overly dull. On the hot terrane, there are a lot of orange to red color schemes; making a more vibrant atmosphere.

The most challenging art piece was to create a fabric drawing. It took me a lot time to figure out where to shade. After a bunch of diligent tries, I finally have the drawing. However, it still doesn't look like a fabric.

The third task is to edit a photo. I chose to edit a photo of Chinatown's signature landmark because I lived there. I am very proud of that picture as a Chinese immigrant. Since, I like everything to be sharp and colorful. I chose to saturate the photograph.

For the fourth task, I chose to illustrate a piece of writing from Where the Wild Things Are. I chose to change the protagonist to a female because females should be portrayed as audacious and adventurous rather than obedient all the time. I also change the monster to a European horror influenced Chinese mythological creature.

I really have a lot to improve. But, trying new things are always good. To me, art is a medium that helps me to imagine. Someday, the sometimes obscure imaginations within my brain could be drag into the world of reality.

Hello, My name is Mingxue Zheng and the following slides contain five artworks I’ve created in the first quarter of my senior art class. Our class is divided up into three groups, passing, middle, and FAS (future art student). As a "middle" I need to complete...

1.) a ceiling tile by collaborating with a "middle"
2.) create a drawing (2-3 hrs. to complete)
3.) create a jack o' lantern
4.) draw a self-portrait

The first major project was the ceiling tile. My inspiration comes from Klarissa’s kitten sketch before the project was introduced. The cats was portrayed as being relaxed and playful while taking a “selfie” in the garden. The pastel colors (light purple, pink, and light blue) conveyed a “summer” and youthful feel.

The second task was to create an artwork that requires three hours to complete. However, the first piece of my artwork (Slide 4) took only two hours to complete. So, I decide to create another piece (Slide 5). For the first piece, I drew Sid from one of my favorite cartoon series, The Ice Age.” I decided not color the picture because I love the sketch lines! However, I don’t think I had capture Sid’s goofiness and comic essence. My inspiration of the second piece comes from the ceiling tile; I drew a delightful, music loving cat.

The most challenging art piece was the self portrait because I am not good at drawing people. I use my mirror reflection to draw the portrait. My favorite piece was the jack o’ lanterns. I love the scary, crazy pumpkins. It fits the Halloween mood. I add a hint of red to accompany the orange in order to intensify the drawing.

Even though I do not have any grand goals in art. I do do some drawings to release stress. After I finished my artworks, I noticed that I have a lot to improve. To me, art is a medium that helps me to imagine. Someday, the sometimes obscure imaginations within my brain could be drag into the world of reality.

Being Discriminated

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 7:35 pm
I am not a true American, I am Chinese. My family has an accent. To many, I have squirted eyes. To many, I am neither white or black, I am yellow. As one of the Asian population in America, I too, got discriminated.

It was when I was living in an African American neighborhood that I heard racial slurs against my race. I had experienced verbal abuse. I lived a tense lifestyle for ten years within this neighborhood while my family opened a Chinese take-out restaurant. Everyday, it seemed like an instigation of an incipient disaster.

Maybe it was the sudden difference of treatment in Chinatown, my previous residence, to this tiger’s den in South Philly. My family probably struck the wrong nerve of these predators. It seems tranquil for a month of the store’s opening. It was as if they had been eying for a killer blow on their prey.

Then, there comes a series of attacks. They threw trash cans around the restaurant. They spit on the windows and smashed one of them loose. They threw firecrackers every New Years and Memorials Day, ruining our hope for a new beginning. They wrote prejudice remarks on the walls. They used the restaurant to hide and sell drugs. Due to the calamities, my parents got into fights frequently. My mom blamed my dad for letting her and me come to the U.S. to suffer. My dad blamed my mom for being negative despite of his efforts to fix the business.

The school I attended was no better. Some of the students are the siblings or children of the people who ransacked my father’s restaurant. There were several times when I walked on a vacant hallway and the same boy would grab my arm, bursting out “chingchong,” “chingzhongzhong." I would then swung my arms loose and walked away without a word while he laughed. If some people blamed for my reticence, I agreed. I felt disappointed about my cowardice. But, any of my verbal attacks would direct a series physical attacks toward my parents. I would rather suffer quietly for the sake of my loved ones who protected me numerous times. It was the time for me to protect them instead.

The violence continued, but it exacerbated. During my freshman year, my dad noticed a boy who trashed the store, the other day he followed me to school, so my dad walked me to school. There was one time when the boy wanted to push me down the stairs and my dad threatened him to beat him up if he did. Then, several months later, a group of robbers cut the lock of the restaurant’s back door and took a new flat-screen TV, boxes of cigars and candies. My family lost thousands of dollars and are in debt. We were bankrupted.

All these times, I just hide upstairs until the hollering downstairs subsided every night. I did nothing. I felt worthless and selfish. I also lost my confidence to speak and I also developed anxiety problems.

When I look back, I always think about how pathetic I was. It was not until I went to SLA, that I regained some of my once gregarious self. The prejudice and discrimination against my race needs to be changed. I think one of the prevention of change is the fact that many Asian immigrants are illiterate and their problems could be overlooked by the police. In order to combat discrimination as an individual, I should fully participate as a translator for the owners of Chinese restaurants in that neighborhood, so our family and other Asian families have better protection. The police would be more cooperative in solving our problems on discrimination.

I could solve this issue, I need to know the origin of prejudice. Based on my research, I found out that one of the causes of prejudice is frustration. One group of people might felt underachieved and released their aggression on other minorities who have a higher chance of success than them (Asians are minorities, but they have positive stereotypes, such as intelligence). Or Asians could be a scapegoat for resentment towards the dominant group. Therefore, resulting discrimination against the Asian population.

It is truthful to be said that in my situation, the blacks are the only ones who are cantankerous. If I said that, I would be lying. My family are also putting oil on fire, even though they were unconscious of it. The blacks may view my family’s attitude as an act of belittlement towards them, just like my family looks at the actions of the African Americans as discrimination.

We could solve this problem by eliminating this miscommunication. It could be assuaged by bringing the two conflicting races together in a camp or other institution where they will be given a task to be achieved only if everyone cooperated. This method was carried out in 1953 by two psychologists named Muzafer Sherif and Caroline Sherif. In which their colleagues ran summer camps for teen boys and letting two groups of boys compete with each other. As the competition grew fierce, the two groups became more aggressive against one another. Aside from the one method I have mentioned that worked, the other ways were dismissed. For instance, agreeing on compromises are forsaken because only the leaders agreed. It is also proven that verbal warnings are useless in maintaining respect, tranquility and understanding on both sides.

Another way to ameliorate discrimination against Asians is to gain more awareness by passive resistance (protests, marches, etc.). But, it would not be efficacious if it lacks the attention needed to create a bigger change. Also, the question as to why there are more sensitivity on discrimination on African Americans is critical. If you listen to BBC or FOX News, Asians are rarely mentioned. Sometimes, I feel that people sometimes forgot our presence in America until they see us on the streets. There are simply not enough publicity in the mainstream.

Also, most schools do not have a curriculum that teaches Asian history or their struggles in America. It comes down to the question of why people have the desire for change when they are not emotionally attached to the problem? Most curriculums taught the Atlantic slavery several times. It makes the younger generation feel a sense of sympathy and rage on the treatment of African Americans, therefore the topic of prejudice against African Americans is a sensitive topic. Since, there is a void of lessons taught about Asian slaveries and struggles, people sometimes forgot that we are being discriminated as well.

Unless the publicity and a slight change to the schools’ curriculum to inflict a more successful protest, passive resistance would only gain minimal results.

To me, discrimination is not just a political issue, it is also affecting victims’ lives. To some Asians who can not speak adequate English, they are constantly ignored by the public when they seek help. When the people trashed my dads restaurant, the police leisurely took their time to solve the problem. This agonizing experience transformed my past outspoken self to my current timid self who still wants to recover.

There is really no need to inflict harm on others. It would only create more hate between groups. Discrimination could be prevented by group contacts and active protests. I wish for a better tomorrow for Asian Americans who suffer the same experiences as my family.

Love Is A Necessity Now

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 10:40 am
Comparing “Taming of the Shrewd” to “When Harry Met Sally”

One of Shakespeare’s comedic work, “Taming of the Shrewd,” makes it evident that the idea of romantic love was void within a relationship and was always about control. In this play, the character Petruchio, who married Katherine for the sake of money, wants to tame Katherine into an obedient wife. A modern comedy, “When Harry Met Sally,” however, celebrates romantic love. In this 1989 movie, Harry finally finds his true love as he reunites with his friend, Sally, and tried to win her heart by using some of Petruchio’s tactics.

Even though Petruchio and Harry are both using the same tactics to win a maiden over, their objective and outcome are not the same. Despite having a fortune, Petruchio still wanted to expand his wealth by marrying Katherine. With an absence of love, Katherine was unhappily married to Petruchio after Petruchio wooed her by showing a sense of admiration toward her flaws. During their marriage, Petruchio uses his tactics to control Katherine. Harry, however, used these strategies to convey his love and sense of care for Sally, a woman who just stepped out of her loneliness of a relationship. Katherine strongly rejected the control in her heart that Petruchio wanted to place on her, whereas Sally feels the true warmth of love for the first time of her life.

Harry and Petruchio were both trying to win somebody over by using the same tactics. However, Harry used these tactics for love rather than control. This reflects the changed social belief that love is a necessity in a relationship.

“Say that she rail, why when I tell her plain, she sings as sweetly as a nightingale. Say she frown, I’ll say she looks as clear as morning roses newly washed with dew. When I shall ask the banns, and when be married…”
(Act 2, Scene 1, pg, 87, lines 178-188)

In this quote, Petruchio came up with a plan to woo Katherine in order to get himself what he wants, her dowry. His plan was to combat every bit of Katherine’s bitterness towards him into what he would express as an admiration of her. This situation shows Petruchio’s shallowness in love that results a bitter relationship with Katherine, who was not pleased of his false flattering. It shows that loveless sweet talks will not result a successful wooing. However, Katherine still married Petruchio because marriage was not about love in their time period. It is like a business dealing because Petruchio’s primary purpose for marrying Katherine was her dowry, not her love.

In the last scene, Sally was heart-broken because of a failed relationship with her boyfriend and comfort herself by sleeping with Harry. After the night, Harry realized that he love Sally, while Sally said that their affair was accidental. In order to build a more romantic relationship with Sally, Harry used Petruchio’s sweet talks to win her over.

Screen Shot 2013-12-03 at 5.47.34 PM
Screen Shot 2013-12-03 at 5.47.34 PM
Harry proclaimed his love this way, “I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes." Unlike Petruchio who used this tactic to marry Katherine’s dowry after only minutes of their encounter, Harry used this strategy efficiently based what he know about Sally these past few years. His use of this strategy hit Sally’s soft spots by proclaiming that he love her flaws with an eager, serious tone. It strongly differs from Petruchio’s sweet talks that are more flirtatious, rather than serious.

“I dare assure you, sir, ‘tis almost two, and ‘twill be supper time ere you come there [Katherine]. It shall be seven ere I go to horse. Look what I speak, or do, or think to do, You are still crossing it. Sirs, let’ t alone. I will not go today, and ere I do, It shall be what o’clock I say it is [Petruchio].”
(Act 4, Scene 4, lines 196-202)

Katherine wants to go to her sister, Bianca’s wedding, while Petruchio wanted to tame Katherine into obedience as he proclaimed that he should be the one deciding when they would go, not her. Petruchio used another tactic to control Katherine as he always opposes Katherine’s opinions and wishes in even the smallest of things claiming that it is seven o’clock instead of two. This constant opposition makes Katherine unsatisfied at heart while being falsely obedient on the outside. This constant quarrel for control caused tension in the relationship rather than building a sense of closeness between their relationship.

Harry uses the same tactics on Sally as he wants to get Sally’s attention and putting his beliefs on Sally for her own benefit in a causal, humorous way.
Screen Shot 2013-12-05 at 9.42.45 AM
Screen Shot 2013-12-05 at 9.42.45 AM
In this early scene, Henry argued with Sally in the car about the necessity of sadness rather than complete happiness in life. He said, “You ever think about death...I spent hours. I spent days. When the shit comes down, I am going to be prepare and you’re not. That is what I’m saying [Henry to Sally]. In the meantime, you’re going to be ruining your life waiting for it [Sally to Henry].” This quarrel might seem childish and random, but, Harry expressed his care for Sally because she was happily working herself to death.

Henry win Sally over wholeheartedly by using Petruchio’s tactics because he use it for the purpose of love and care for Sally. This successful proposal in the end of the movie reflects the society’s point of view on how it was love is necessity for a romantic relationship to be born. In Petruchio’s case, his society views marriage and relationship as a form of control or getting profit from their wives’ family. Even if Petruchio did get what he wants in the end, Katherine would still hold a secret grudge against Petruchio. If “The Taming of the Shrewd,” happens in the modern world, Petruchio's friends and family would have not approve this relationship as marriage were now to be thought as a lifelong commitment of love instead of impure intentions, like gaining wealth.

My Education tied with the Budget Cuts

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 3:06 pm
I am a sophomore in SLA and I came to SLA to learn in an environment that I fell in love in. If the budget will be cut further, the laptops to enhance learning experiences and different electives that would help me decide my future career would disappear. I applied for Digital Video and Advance Engineering for my junior year. Would I be able to take these classes? If not, then what is school's purpose anyway? Isn't it to teach future leaders? Then, why is this budget cut will potentially prevents me from being an renown photographer or engineer? I think that every children should have the basic opportunity to tried out things that they want to do in the future. Saying that Philadelphia is an underdeveloped educational institution or any other reason isn't enough to let the government have a cold or negative response to Mayer Nutter's proposal on recovering budget.

I really want to spend my next two years in Science Leadership Academy in an environment that this school could give me in the best of its ability, not a backslash that will turn my last two years in this wonderful school into a nightmare filled with regrets.

Shakespeare Performance: "Othello" Journals

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in English 2 - Pahomov on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 8:23 am
Journal #1: Iago’s Soliloquy, Deep Analyzations, and Director’s Notes

"I have rubbed this young quat almost to the sense,

And he grows angry. Now, whether he kill Cassio

Or Cassio him, or each do kill the other,

Every way makes my gain. Live Roderigo,

He calls me to a restitution large

Of gold and jewels that I bobbed from him

As gifts to Desdemona.

It must not be. If Cassio do remain

He hath a daily beauty in his life

That makes me ugly. And besides, the Moor

May unfold me to him—there stand I in much peril.

No, he must die. But so, I hear him coming."------Iago (Act 5, Scene 1)

In the first four lines of this soliloquy (except, "Live Roderigo"), are spoken to the audience because these lines are the hints to the next proceeding plan of Iago. These lines gave the audience background info that they need to know in order to get a clearer understanding of Iago’s plan. These lines are his thoughts about the next step of the plan, it would be unnecessary if he talked to himself about it, because he already knows what is going to happen next. It is common sense that he is talking to the audience as Iago allows the audience experience the tension of the play as his evil plan proceeds to another level. Aside of a small section of this soliloquy to be toward the audience, a large portion of the soliloquy was targeted toward himself, Iago. The thoughts of the character reflects upon the situation he was in. Iago was analyzing Cassio and Rodrigo as the actor puts himself in Iago's shoes. It is in a  psychological state now. This portion of the soliloquy was the most personal thoughts of the Iago himself. The last line, "But so, I hear them coming," is to shift the focus from himself to the audience. This line is also a stage direction and an attention shift for the audience to know that Cassio will soon enter the stage. Aside from the target audiences, the actor needed to face in each portion o the soliloquy, stage directions are also important. For example,

"I have rubbed this young quat almost to the sense,

And he grows angry. Now, whether he kill Cassio

Or Cassio him, or each do kill the other,

Every way makes my gain.”

In this portion of the soliloquy,  Iago refers to Othello as a “young quat.” It means that Othello was so easily to be tricked into the plan like a young child. Iago thinks that the plan proceeds well and he could absolutely get what he expected from his plan. When the actor said these lines, he should act fulfilling and have a delighted facial expression. In the quote, "Every way makes my gain,” the actor should show Iago's confidence and cocky attitude by putting more power on the word, “I.” But, the actor should feel cautious after the short delightfulness as he then, put doubts in his own plan.

"Live Roderigo,

He calls me to a restitution large

Of gold and jewels that I bobbed from him

As gifts to Desdemona.

It must not be."

This portion of the soliloquy means that Iago wants to kill Roderigo because Roderigo was a witness and his acquaintance. He was worried that Roderigo would told Othello about his evil plan because Roderigo suspects that Iago didn’t gave his jewels to Desdemona. So, in this moment, the actor should feel a bit anxiousness once he said, “Live Roderigo,” and continue with a softer tone that conveys a sense of wariness. The actor should said the line, “It must not be” with a louder voice because it would attract more attention of the audience as Iago proceeds to another character, Cassio.

"If Cassio do remain

He hath a daily beauty in his life

That makes me ugly. And besides, the Moor

May unfold me to him—there stand I in much peril.

No, he must die."

The last five lines of this soliloquy means that Iago want Cassio to die because Cassio’s handsomeness and his honesty would make Iago, himself, look bad. Cassio would be an obstacle for Iago because Cassio may have a chance to clear up the misunderstandings between Desdemona and Othello. During this portion of the speech, the actor need to read the lines faster during the second to fourth line. Then, the actor should stop with a short sigh. After, the sigh, the actor should said the last line in a strong voice that expresses his [Iago] confidence and certainty of his plan.

Journal #2: Secondary Character (Emilia)’s Views on Cheating Compared to Desdemona, and Strategies to Analyze Minor Characters

"In troth, I think I should, and undo ’t when I had done. Marry, I would not do such a thing for a joint-ring, nor for measures of lawn, nor for gowns, petticoats, nor caps, nor any petty exhibition. But for the whole world? Why, who would not make her husband a cuckold to make him a monarch? I should venture purgatory for ’t." Emilia-----(Act 4 Scene 4)

In certain circumstances, Emilia believes that cheating is appropriate. She will not do it for objects of value but only for the sake of her husband. It shows that Emilia wants to win back Iago's love, even if she need to sell off her body to other men. In her heart, she doesn't really cares about the shame or the consequences that might put on her husband's reputation. Emilia only cares about her love for Iago, even if it is the wrong path to go or in turn, make Iago and her relationship worse.  As long as she knows that what she did is right for the sake of Iago’s love, she doesn't care. She will blindly follow the path she choses. Emilia believes that cheating is just a weapon to bring up her husband's position, rather than a ugly selfish practice. But, Desdemona had a totally different and innocent viewpoint than Emilia.

"I have heard it said so. Oh, these men, these men!
Dost thou in conscience think—tell me, Emilia—
That there be women do abuse their husbands
In such gross kind?"-------Desdemona (Act 4, Scene 3)

Contrast to Emilia's perspective, Desdemona will not cheat on Othello for any particular reason and she was so native to even be surprised to know that some women cheated on their husbands. I think this is the cause of the true love between Desdemona and Othello that made Desdemona have such native thoughts as she is, herself, dwell in Othello's love. Therefore, she doesn't have thoughts of ever cheating on her husband. In Desdemona’s eyes, she sees Othello as a kind husband and she put every husband in the world as to have the same kindness as him. On the other hand, Emilia have thoughts on cheating on Iago because her marriage with Iago was already cold.

Based on the a character viewpoint on my secondary character’s standpoint on a single idea, I could understand the character's motivations better when I concentrated on the huge contrast between my secondary character to the other characters. Also, the character’s "aside" scenes reveal their true character. I could contrast and compare of what the character thinks and what he or she actually said to other characters in the story, in order to analyze this character in depth.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Journal #3: How does Othello’s past life influence the story?

My role in the play,“Othello,” was Othello. He was a Moorish general and was in charge of the war in Cyprus. In the beginning of scene one, Iago and Roderigo expresses their hatred toward Othello because of his race and his ill decision to let an inexperienced soldier, Cassio to be their commander. Othello’s favorite person was Desdemona because she doesn’t mind Othello’s race and eloped with him. During the years of Othello’s marriage or before, Iago suspects his wife, Emilia has slept with Othello and seeks for revenge. Iago set up an plan to make Othello believe that Desdemona was cheating on him. Othello fell into Iago’s trap as Iago had shown evidence of Cassio and Desdemona’s affair. Othello then, strangled Desdemona.

Ones’ past life influence a character’s personality and behavior because both Othello and Desdemona are people with a pursuit of love. Though undergoing with hardships during their marriage and their acceptance in their own society, they are still together. If they were to betray each other then the "hurt" will be stronger than couples who have a smoother marriage. So, when Othello was suspicious about Desdemona's betrayal, he is is blinded by only on the love that will end instead of if Desdemona really cheat on him or not. Since, he was a Moor, he have more than enough reasons for why Desdemona would cheated on him. He probably also thinks that the only person who won't mind of his race would actually one day finally felt that his race will made her look bad, be an heartbreaking betrayal than any other. To Othello, Desdemona didn't also betrayed his love but his race as well. Othello believes the fact that Desdemona gave their token of love to Cassio is a great dishonor toward their love. A love that could be easily thrown away or disappear. So, he didn't act a little suspicious as Iago said that Desdemona cheated on him.

Journal #4: Preparation for Scene Eight Performance

During my performance in Scene eight of Othello, I had a lot of emotional, mental, and other aspects that I would add between the lines to fully portray my character, Othello. For example, after Othello killed Desdemona and Emilia storms in, Othello said, "That! What?" As Othello, I would sound puzzled and panicked about Desdemona’s cry because Othello was certain about her death before Emilia came into the room. So, I needed to feel panicked with the word “That.” But, I also want to distract Emilia from seeing the dead Desdemona.

Hand gestures, such as a huge amounts of finger-pointing are essential to this scene. For instance, when Emilia said, "O lady, speak again! Sweet Desdemona! O sweet mistress, speak!" I would point to Desdemona when I said, “She turn'd to folly, and she was a whore,” because I want to addressed the audience that I was describing Desdemona. Since, Emilia was unconvinced about Desdemona’s affair, Othello would said this line with an angry tone. I would stressed out the word, "she", "false" and "water" in the line, “She [Desdemona] was false as water,” in order to make these three words stand out because Othello want to make his point more convincing and urgent to Emilia.

I will pause between, "Thy husband" and "knew it all." to create a highlighted point or focus that the audience should pay more attention to in the following things that will be happening in this scene. I will walk forward when I say, "Thy husband" to Emilia.

I will speak toward to the audience when I say, "an honest man he is." and look at Desdemona with a disgusted face when I say, "hates that slime that sticks on filthy seeds." Then, I would express a sense of frustration when I say, "He, women, I say thy husband; dost understand the word?” I will place my hand to my chest while saying,"My friend," and  points to Emilia when, I said, "Thy husband" and spread my hands wide in the air, when I say, "honest, honest Iago."

When I say, "Ha!" I rolled my eyes and turn my back towards Emilia. During this scene, I will use a sword as a prop. I point my sword towards Emilia when I said, "Peace, you were best." When Emilia backs toward the sword, I need to act surprised and frustrated. . With all of these preparations, there are certainly things that stand out. For example, the moment when Othello and Emilia will argue while walking around Desdemona. Also, the time when Emilia will act fearless while she is walking toward Othello's sword was a powerful moment for Emilia. Some great components to the scene was the fact that our group have speaks to multiple audiences. For example, "Out and alas, that was my lady's voice." will be toward the herself. The phrase, "Help!Help! Help!" will be toward the the people outside of the room, and the sentence, "speak again Desdemona,....speak." will be the Desdemona. I am noticed that Emilia is fearless while Othello put his sword tip toward her. So, I want to act like I was falling back (walking backward) while Emilia is approaching forward. This represent a sense of power for Emilia and a sense of cowardice toward Othello to point a sword on a women.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Journal #5: After the Performance

During the scene when Emilia found out that Desdemona was killed by Othello because of Othello’s jealousy and her husband, Iago’s evil plan, she said, “Thou hast not half that power to done harm as I have to be hurt. O gull! O dolt! As ignorant as dirt! Thou hast done a deed, I care not for thy [Othello] sword. I’ll make thee known, though I lost twenty lives.” This quote shows how loyal Emilia is with Desdemona. Even though Emilia wants to put lesser distance between Iago and her relationship. She didn’t think twice about betraying Desdemona and stand on Iago’s side. This action shows that she was a women who stand in the right and doesn’t took personal matters in distorting the truth. In the performance, I want to show Emilia’s fearless and loyal side by giving her a stronger presence than Othello. I gave advice to Imani, casting as Emilia, to slowly walked forward while I, as Othello, backs off with a speechless and surprised expression.

This quote also shows Othello’s state of mind after killing Desdemona. The fact that Othello strangled his beloved women (even if he suspects Desdemona to be cheated on him), but he also point a sword on Emilia. As a warrior, Othello puts his sword, a weapon to kill furious men on the bloody battlefield to a defenseless women. It shows that he is in a state of frustration and he totally lost his audacious former self to his jealousy. This is important because it shows just how deep Othello fell prey to the “green eyed monster.” It was a huge transformation of Othello’s former self to his dark side. When Emilia said the line, I need to be confused because I believed in Iago, so Emilia’s views are alien to me. I backs off, not because of Emilia’s sworn upon her life that Desdemona was not guilty and Iago is the mastermind of the tragedy, but because of Emilia’s fearless attitude in Othello’s presence.

My group’s performance goes well in some aspects. I [Othello] tried to put on a surprised face when Emilia moves toward my sword. This is a breakthrough for Emilia’s character in past plays. Aaron (the Shakespeare instructor) said that he never saw Othello being backed down by Emilia before. Some of the things that doesn’t go as expected was the position of the characters. When, Emilia enters the door, I actually bumped into her because the setting of our rehearsals was in a different place. Some things that we are proud of was the emotions and the tone of our voices. For example, when I said, “She [Desdemona] was false as water.” I said it in an angry and eager tone because Emilia was in disbelief to the fact that Desdemona was unfaithful. But, he still wants to make Emilia believe what he believes. As for Emilia, she talked to different targeted audiences in one sentence. For example, when Emilia said, “Speak, Sweet Desdemona, Speak!” She was talking to Desdemona. When she said, “Help!Oh! Help!” she yelled to the people outside of the room (toward the door).

The things that could be done differently in the scene was that I could put in more emotion and reactions when Emilia is saying the opposite of what Othello expects and intended to hear. I should put my hand on my forehead when I was irritated by Emilia’s unreasonable arguments.

The play let me understand more about Emilia. Her loyal personality was not what I expected as Iago’s wife. Before the rehearsals, I thought that Emilia will be on her husband’s side when she found out that Iago was behind all of the abnormalities and the death of Desdemona. Since, she claimed to sacrificed her body in exchange for her husband’s future. It, then seems like Emilia was centered around Iago’s affections throughout the scene. But, during this scene Emilia actually stand to what is right and actually was vey loyal to her mistress.

"Education"

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 7:14 am
At first glance, my uncle and my father are normal citizens who look just like any other people in America. But, both of them are dropouts from school. Nowadays, people may assume dropouts in a negative way. But, not all of them suit the stereotypes that dropouts face. My uncle and my father are living examples of how some dropouts really are in the past, by crossing the boundaries of language, borderlines, and the expectations of both the Chinese and American societies. The interviews digs deeply into how and why education is important.
Combo Interviews Edited Version #4
Reflection:
As soon as the project was assigned, I know what my topic is going to be able. It is the most hottest topic that my family would love to discuss every time they meet each other-----education. This topic pops out of my mind like a light bulb when Ms. Pahomov announced this benchmark to the class. You see, in my family, I can sort of gain more attention within my family when I get decent grades. In my family, it is more like a academic competition. At first, I thought that it is just a normal expectation that was put on me by my grandfather. But, it is more than that.

After I interviewed my father and my uncle, I discovered the various hardships that my father need to go though after he had quit his school too early and the consequences he needed to face when he came to America. Like my father who didn’t know a single English word, my uncle came to America when he was in his 20s. I didn’t know that my father’s expectations is based on the fact, that he didn’t want me to experience the same hardship and the various difficulties he had experienced in this life. He is just like any other parent, who want his child to be better than him. (The same reasons behind the strict conduct on grades also applies to my cousins.)

I realized that I am now pressed under a even higher pressure because I will be the first person in my family to go to college. Every single one of my family’s expectations and hopes are placed on me. So, I feel really uncomfortable after I heard about it, and I am even more scare to get an Asian F on my report card. Since, it would certainly disappoint my whole family and knocked down their expectations of me.

The Accented Tongue

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in English 2 - Pahomov on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 6:47 pm
“Mingxue, can you read the third passage please?”
“The shep is singking.”
“LOUDER!”
“THE SHEP is singking.”
“Class! Read that one line out correctly.”
“The ship is sinking.” The class screamed this sentence at me.
At that moment, I just wanted to dig a hole and escape from this embarrassment. From that point on, I would always put my head down and avoid eye contact when my teacher asked for a reader. I hated the way I sound. Why am I the only Asian who couldn’t enunciate the words correctly as my classmates? The more I thought about it, the dumber I thought I was. My friends also made a joke out of me behind my back--but I heard it anyway.
“Do you know that Mingxue got called on again by Ms. Tang?”
“Yeah. She sounds awful.”
“Right. She’s so dumb. How can she mispronounced one syllable words?”
“I can’t believe we’re friends with her. She is so stupid.”

The humiliation was just too tough for a 8 year old to handle. I became more diffident as I moved on to third grade. I would always daydream about myself talking as fluently and precisely as my classmate Rob would. Every word that was coming out of his mouth sounded just like one of the Fox News reporters. He always participates in class discussions but I didn’t even have the guts to speak a word out loud. I hated their judgement on my “funny accent.” I felt that all of the people in my class were more superior than me because they could speak English better than me.

I felt powerless, just like the author named Richard Rodriguez. In the “Hunger Of Memory,” he portrays himself as a language problematic child who was expected to be unsuccessful based on his Spanish accent. He came to an American school with just fifty basic English words and explains the painful path he took to be a part of the American society. This quote, “But, by being firm and so clear, the sound of his voice said that he was a grimy...he belonged in public society,” shows that Rodriguez thinks that the fact that he can’t speak with an American accent prevents him from being a part of the society he lives in now. To have the same or similar accent in a specific place means the distances between you and the person you’re talking to are closer. It is hard to be a minority who has a complete different accent from the majority of the population. You will feel overpowered as if the people who are fluent in the appropriate accent are suppose to be more superior than you. Your foreign accent is a symbol that reminds you are the minority. It is a voice in your brain that screams, “Your strong accent is more likely to be made fun of, than to be accepted by the people who speaks different than you.”

To escape from the feeling that the people who speaks fluent English are better than me, I need to be audacious enough to face the judgements. The most terrifying place is school. Schools are made to correct and properly educate people. There is no mercy for foreigners. People would correct your grammar, your pronunciation, and your vocabulary. These humiliations I had in my elementary school are not the only incidents that pluck holes on my self-esteem. These incidents happen in my high school as well.

When I was typing up my first lesson plan, somebody's parent corrected my grammar while my friends just praised me for being an overachiever. At that time, my mind and my facial expressions weren’t cooperating. My mind wanted to erase this memory as if nothing had happened. I guess I probably looked embarrassed or furious after she said, “Please excuse me. That is my job. I am a book editor.” I tried to distract myself from this conversation by looking strongly at my screen, but a tap on my shoulder from this lady woke me up from the shame. Even if I am an overachiever, so what? This is not quality work. It is just quantity work that was rejected in the eyes of an editor, rejected from the cruel society. Even around my  friends who speak excellent English makes me feel insecure when they’re editing my essays.
Also, when my Asian friends praised my fluent English, I feel the guilt of accepting their compliments.

But, the feelings of comfort to speak Chinese is not as pleasant when I am speaking English. The timorousness to speak a foreign language as Rodriguez interpreted as “Not to understand this is to misunderstand the public uses of schooling...a family’s language...conveyed through those sounds was the reminder of being home.” It means that people are more challenged or uneasiness when speaking a foreign language because it overstepped their comfort zones. To speak your primitive language with a familiar accent that had been with you for all of your life is alleviating. School is made for public and you have to face obstacles as if you’re an adult. Language is a way to communicate but it is also the process to get the bitter taste of the world that let you step away from being nurtured. But, after the painful road to speak in a certain way in which is accepted or viewed as “professional,” you can be respected and gained power in a place you once felt so distant.

But, I have speak ten years of English, I become more open and stellar in articulating my English. When I was in ninth grade, one of my teachers, Ms. Kaita-Doe was astonished when she noticed how my grammar had improved over a thousand bounds through a report I sent her.
“I saw your report. It is awesome!”
“How is my grammar?”
“I got to admit that your grammar is perfect. It is a huge surprise to me considering the essay you wrote in seventh grade.’
“Yeah, I remember that you want me to edited it three times but I failed every time.”
“It seems like SLA is a great place for you.”
“It sure is. I have become more candid and more garrulous.”
“Before you graduated from Tilden, the only thing I was concerned about is your English. But, after I saw your report, I am not worried. So, good luck in high school. Bye”
“Bye.”
This video chat made me feel that my hard work, and humiliations I faced pays off. The feeling of being accomplish is too great to be expressed in words. I have regained my confidence after such a rough journey and returned in triumph. Now, many people wanted me to edit and give feedbacks to their essays and is willing to listen to my ideas.

Learning a new language can stressful for a foreigner. However, the process to be multilingual becomes one of the greatest achievement a person can earned through their hard efforts in which they would always remember.

Life=Exhaustion+Old People

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in English 2 - Pahomov on Friday, November 23, 2012 at 5:23 pm
I have never been this tired. I missed the old days when my parents are the ones I depended on. My role is just a princess. But, as I get older, I am the only person I could depend on. Even if my employer is such a bossy old man, my mom will not think twice to give her daughter to him.

Now everyday, that old hag went roaring  like a furious tiger. Waking me up, just for her daughter to be paid. She will pinch my back until my eyes popped wide open. OUNCH! Why are you so worked up...(look at the clock) at 7.”

“COLLY SHELLON YOU NEED TO GET PAID TODAY. IF YOU DON’T GET YOUR BUTT OFF OF THAT BED, YOU KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN!” Her hand grips tightly on the rough stick as she glared at me angrily. I admit my defeat when feeling the stinging pain she left on me two months earlier (rubbing her butt)...when...I planned on skipping my job.
(phone ringing and Colley picked it up)

(Answers the phone) Why are you be all in my (acting ghetto) businessssssssss. Talking about some, did you get whipped. Josh Chuck, if you don’t have anything to do, just chill.
(sigh)

Look, its not my fault, that my butt was slapped by a tree branch. My homework are piling up. Benchmarks are flying straight on my desk. Just what are these teachers been thinking now days, bro. Are we some robots in the movies that do one task per second or have an ingenious mind that calculates in the speed of light? I can’t even see my twenty-three inch desktop without moving like...3 feet of papers aside. Maybe one day, this monstrous stack will knock over my brand new Samsung desktop. You know what, it did. Right after my Spanish teacher wants me to make a random iMovie. That computer is $1,499 dollars. (louder;urgent tone) $1,499 boy...oh yeah, plus tax. So now I need to get a job to get a tech dude to my house to fix it. Piles of HWs are already driven me crazy and, mopping  people’s houses just make me want to be done with my life.

Every freaking day, I need to get these rotten fake wooden floors cleaned with my sweat. Dumping water as dark as charcoal into the toilet. If that toilet get stuck, my daily paycheck would be stuffed into the plumber’s pocket. That owner of the house is so picky. He is Mr. Brown, who lived three blocks away from my house in Chester Avenue. That bearded, elf-sized man would detected every speck of dirt in his house like he is a dog.  If there are three grains of dirt, he would said, (speak like the old man) umh..young lady could you clean these dust on the floor like what you’re suppose to do, I deeply appreciated it.

Deeply appreciated it my butt! Just what is this master and slave relationship we’re having, taking about some, “I deeply appreciated” when the real thing that he was trying to say is (speaking like the old man) yo, little girl if you don’t get your legs working and swing this mop, you’re not getting the money of this man. You think that you could just clean my house like that and trick this old man’s money. I know you teenagers, so don’t try to act so slick.

Maybe I will just quit and kiss his hand goodbye like a person with dignity. Wait...Colly, calm down. If I actually have the guts to get rid of this hell of a torture, then my house will turn to hell itself. My mom would say (speak like her mother) YOU’RE NOT JUST GOING TO DUMP THIS POOR MAN. I’LL DRAG YOU TO HIS HOUSE AND APOLOGIZE.  HOPEFULLY HE WILL EMPLOY YOU AGAIN. WHY DO I HAVE TO GIVE BIRTH TO SUCH A USELESS KID!  Nah. I get tired of her savage, unpleasant noises I hear in the morning. Then, I need to apologize to this masked elf. No. Heck no for god sake.!
(long sigh)

Well maybe this is my life. Being controlled by exhaustion and old people.
(Put down the phone and go to work)

This is the final blog for my "You and the World" project and give students the opportunity to think about issues in the world and find a solution to the problem. The topic of my project is about Genetic Testing seek to find a solution to solve one of its disadvantages.

Video Descriptions:
The video below is a public awareness video that allows people to help patients who are not able to afford personalized medicine. All $294,000 of it. Unfortunately, I can not find a reliable or a suitable organization to make such donation possible. But I bet that this issue will resonate in your mind and somewhere in the future personalized are price friendly and can be afforded by all civilians.

Message: If you ever encounter victims that was chained by their diseases, stretch our your hand and help them.

Genetic Testing: Issues on Privacy and Social Injustice

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 2:35 pm
To go to my first blog click here.

A new age of genetic improvement allow us to decode our own human genome with less than a thousand dollars. It solves the problem for new efficient medicine that could cure rare illnesses and sometimes cancer. Biotech companies like 23andMe developed an odds calculator to track down an individual’s possibility to contact a certain disease. Tracing your ancestors could be just as easy. But, as this growing industry took a bigger step into the world, questions started to rise about the reliability and the privacy of personal DNA results.

Recent discovery:

Do you know that now scientists could eliminate some of the mutations in an embryo’s DNA? Don’t be anxious or boisterous about this news. We’re no in the stage to increase the intelligence, height, or the body structure of the baby prior from birth. But, will it happen in the distant future?

Screen Shot 2012-05-09 at 9.39.41 PM
Figure 1: A scientist was extracting a portion of the embryo to remove a part of the mutation.

Personalized medicine?

Thesis: The price of personalized medicine is expensive and is most likely to be used within the upper society. It is not realistic for the lower class to be able to afford it daily and it is only available for people who have a mutation in an actionable gene.

The value to develop personalized medicine is a new breakthrough in inventing new ways to cure. But, the current price for these medicine is too expensive and could most likely be used in the upper society rather than the lower class who could not afford about $294,000 per year (about $800 per day). Then, it will evolve into a social injustice that was primarily made to help the whole society. Even if the price goes down in the future because of the invention of new advance technologies, personalized medicine are only available to patients who have an actionable gene. Unlike all prescriptions from clinics that could treat people of all classes and almost all people, personalized medicine’s medical power could only be delivered to a selected group.

Trustworthy results?

Thesis: The results of personal health risks should not varies from different companies, the results should be definite in order to prevent confusion and panic from testers.

Different biotech companies have different methods in collecting DNA samples. Some companies, like 23andMe use saliva samples while deCode Me use cheek cell samples to sequence an individual’s DNA. But, all of these variety of different samples leads to results that varies from company to company. If the results depended on only a part of the whole DNA then the odds calculator will prevent the tester from contacting a certain disease but it could also create unnecessary panic and bewilderment of the testers if the company did not explain how to read the statistics in the right way.

Figure 3: Based on genes provided by the DNA sample of an individual, the odds calculator can show the possibility of an individual to contact a certain disease.

The odds calculator is a great tool to help prevent and decrease illness. But, the biotech company also need to give the testers both the possibility and the definite facts about their health. Also, these biotech companies need to create a manuel to guide their testers to read their results properly so they will not mistakenly believed that all of the results shown on the odds calculator is true. Personalized medicine need to be created so it could target both the patients with actionable and non-actionable mutation genes or the cost needs to be lower so it would be affordable to all groups of people.

Personal Research: (Personalized medicine/genetic testing)

Based on the survey that I had conducted, 25% of the people said that personalized medicines are necessary in our society based on their expensive cost the rate of cure for all groups of people. 75% of the people said that the society need personalized medicine but it is not ready to be accepted as a major type of medicine in our society, yet.

Also, 25% of the people are not interested in taking genetic tests, 25% of the people are interested in taking the tests and 50% of the people hesitated to crack their DNA.

Genetic Testing: A New Improvement Or A New Age of Social Injustice

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 10:55 pm
The “You and the World” project targets students to focus on world issues that they are interested in and seek to find a possible solution for that problem. It is also a debate-related project that the students argue though different aspects and their view of the issue.

My topic for the "You and the World” project is Genetic Testing: A New Improvement In Our Lives Or A New Era of Social Injustice. I specially chose this topic because I am fascinated by my own identity based on my DNA. To first know myself is an essential step to interact and associate with other people based on the knowledge of my personality, behavior, and etc.

Imagine you could one day look at your genome straight from your tablet. This scenario was thought to be an inconceivable task decades ago. But, as the Human Genome project took an remarkable achievement in humanity, sequencing genomes is possible. But, it would took $350,000 and an extensive time to sequence one genome. But, everything was starting to change as new technology made sequencing genomes faster and less costly (less than $500). It may gave rise to an era about self-acknowledgement or, is it?

F1.large
F1.large
Figure 1: It shows the amount of people who took genetic tests based on the four categories, predictive test, affected mutation search, and research mutation search. In the recent years, the amount of people taking genetic tests increased.

As the society’s population began to grow and countries get crowder, more diseases and bacteria thrived. The need for new medicine are at constant need. A simple genetic test could detect an individual’s mutated genes and design a type of personalized medicine based on his or her DNA. It is could be a new treatment for cancer. It means that the government will not have to spend as much as millions of dollars for patients with a severe and rare disease that are not familiar in hospitals.

Despite its advantage, these medicine are expensive (up to $294,000 per year). Not everyone will be eligible for personalized medicine because it could be only used in patients who have a mutated actionable gene. Even if it is proven that these medicines and chemical compounds have some affect on cancer, the cancer will sometimes come back to the patients body. So, how high is the cure rate? Is it worth spending hundreds and thousands of dollars?

Biotech companies, like DeCode me, and 23andMe placed a feature called the odds calculator to predict the possibility for that individual to contact certain diseases. To avoid these risks, people will adjust their lifestyle, prevent, and ask for treatment before the illness strikes. It means that people’s health rates and life-expectancy of the world will increase. However, sometimes people could not distinguish from possibilities that have countless variations from facts. Therefore, resulting the individual to be overwhelmed by results that are tested by only a fraction of their total genome.

Screen Shot 2012-05-09 at 9.07.31 PM
Screen Shot 2012-05-09 at 9.07.31 PM
Figure 2: This is a flash drive that holds an individual's genome. It comes from a biotech company that uses a famous Greek quote, "Know thyself" as their message.

As the world seeks for new scientific achievements to make our lives easier it could result a new age of social injustice. The advancement toward personalized medicine means that hospitals and labs like, illumina could have a chance to accidentally leaking people’s DNA to public. Say if you want to be employ to a job, but the interviewer will not consider you because of a high chance you will get Parkinson’s disease based on your DNA.

There is a Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) that guarantee security and privacy for all people’s genome results, but who will stop the economy from choosing the best people into their companies, colleges, athletes, and etc? Even with the protection of the GINA, will it prevent any and all future possible invasions of privacy toward genetic information as this technology become more and more popular and efficient? Will we proceed into the society featured in “Gattaca”?

Negative Space Art Piece

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in Art - 9 - Hull on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 6:10 pm
What is negative space?
Negative space are areas in your drawings that are not the drawing itself. It is basically the spaces that are excluded by the structure of the drawings.

Explain how you find the negative space in your cut out and your stool drawing.

In my cut out I find the negative space by cutting out the template and then imagine the parts that is not needed in the cut out. Basically you just separate the black and gray parts of the template. In the stool drawing, I first draw the whole picture and then erase the lines that intersects to make a silhouette. The areas that are not within the lines of my drawing is the negative space.

Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
The artist will see the outer structure of the drawing they made and enhance their skills by making the objects that draw more proportional and more realistic. The negative space also give the artist a sense of how much empty space is in his or her the actual drawing.

Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings?
Knowing the negative space in your drawings enhance your drawings' angle (is there too much empty space does it look awkward?) and also their structure (is the stool's legs straight?).

Food Matters: Mingxue Zheng

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in Museum Experience - Gierke on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 2:39 pm

Why does food matter?

Food matter to the daily lives of our people because people need to consume food everyday to have the necessary energy to make the whole world function into a great society. If the food is not fresh or contains materials that are bad for people’s health then the continuous days of eating fast food would cost the government a lot of money to put under victims who suffer food disorders. Also, children who is in their learning stage of life (3 years old or older) are influenced by their parents who might have bad eating habits that might pass on this trait to the later generations. When these bad habits are passed down to generations and generations, the care for the type of food they’re eating will turned into satisfying the taste of the food without looking at the healthy contents that the food they’re eating contains. If we do care about our life span we need to first look at the freshness and healthiness of the food. The lack of our knowledge in food make the health rate and the death rate of the whole world would increase.

Macbeth's Castles And His Tragedy

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 11:10 am

I had read one of the masterpieces from Shakespeare. Macbeth is about a once royal thane named Macbeth but later he killed King Duncan and become the king. Macbeth change a lot during the play and it is worthy to track his changes throughout the play in order to conclude the significance behind this character. There are a written piece and a creative piece to this investigation of the changes in Macbeth's behavior. At the bottom are several pictures of my creative piece on Macbeth. One is the video that have the original quotes from the book and the quote analysis.

Tthe craft have the modern translation of the quotes that shows Macbeth's transformation in each Act.

The craft shows Macbeth's transformations in the play to obtain kingship. Therefore, the "White Castle" that represent Macbeth's good side. In the front of the "White Castle', there is a silver bridge with the Macbeth dolls. Each doll have a quote that describe him in Act 1 and Act 2. The "Tyrant's Bloody Castle" shows the downfall of Macbeth and, the blood that stains he's heart. In the front of the "Tyrant's Bloody Castle" there is a red bridge that have Macbeth dolls on it. Each doll have a quote that describe him in Act 3, 4 and 5. The silver bridge is the starting point of Macbeth's journey toward kingship and the red bridge is the end point or the path to his own death.

The bridge never crosses into the castles because Macbeth didn't have the qualities to be the king and he died fighting something that he could only obtain by name. The glitters represent Macbeth's dark desires.

Mingxue Zheng: Media Fluency (Q2) revised

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in Technology - Hull on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 12:07 pm
In my previous slide, the font and the size of my words “Life is like water” doesn’t fit in to my slide because the color scheme (red) makes the words were blur and unclear. So, in my revised version I use lighter colors so that will make a contrast with the background color and use another front to fit the tone of the slide. The audience's eyes will move in correspondence to the wave’s motional effect, which guides the audience's eyes around the slide. I also make the musical speaker bigger to show its importance in the slide and make this image "pop" in front of the audience's eyes and change the color of the words that correspond to the musical speaker.

Mingxue Zheng: Q2 Media Fluency

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in Technology - Hull on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at 11:46 am
During the process of creating this slide I’ve learned many important concepts about making an appealing, informative, and awesome slide. From various amount of slide designing sources, I learned that the color and the art of words can help people create a professional slide.

The most important aspect of creating decent slides is its attractive color that will captivate the audience. I use a contrast between two opposite colors. Such as black (in the background) and the bright color of the images and words, so the audience will desguised which things on the slide is more important.

The front and size of the text is also important. In my slide the text explains the central concept. Therefore, it needs to be in the biggest size (96pts) and the brightest color so it will not be masked by other images. As in the article, made by Zach Holman, he used text sizes that are as big as 300pts!

Slides should be in a condensed form, so the audience will not get confused of the information I want to present. As I read the article made by Zen, it states that it should be simple, repetitive, and visual. Nobody wants to read a paragraph! Also, in my slide, the positions and the line of the angle of the images guides the audience, what the direction they should look at.

It is important to present a slide that is clear, simple, creative, and visual. The most professional slides are made with images and plenty of empty spaces so it isn’t too overwhelming. So, I used the Rule of thirds and the empty space rule, my slide will be balanced.

There were some of the very helpful websites:

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in Spanish 1 - Bey on Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 9:49 am
ABCs - Alfabeto Lesson

Learning Spanish alphabets is very important because the pronunciation of the confusing looking Spanish words is associated with these letters. So, this lesson will make you know the pronunciation of the words. Then, develop more complex phrases or sentences.

A - a                sounds like“a” as in art
B- be alta       sounds like (be-all-da)
C- ce              sounds like “sa” as in sat
Ch- che          sound like”ch” as in chips
D - de             sounds like “da” as in dad
E - e                sounds like “a” as in at
F - efe             sounds like (a-fe)
G - ge             sounds like “ha” as in hair
H- hache        sounds like (a-che)
I - i                   sounds like (e)
J- jota              sounds like (hall-da)
K - ka             sounds like (ka)
L- ele             sounds like (a-le)
LL -elle          sound like (a-yah)
M -  eme        sounds like (am-mai)
N  - ene          sounds like (an-ne)
Ñ - eñe          sounds like (an-ne) with a strong nose sound
O - o              sounds like (woo)
P - pe            sounds like “be” as in bed
Q - cu           sounds like “coo” as in cool
R - ere          sounds like (a-rea)
RR - erre      sounds like (a-rea) roll your tongue on “rr”
S - ese               sounds like (a-sia)
T- te              sounds like tei
V - ve chica  sounds like (ve) (chee-ka)
W - doble ve sounds like (doe-b-le) (ve)
X - equis        sounds like (a-keys)
Y - ye   sounds like (ya)

or,
I griega sounds like (i) (gar-ri-ga)
Z - zeta  sounds like (sat-da)

Trick for memorizing Spanish Alphabets

You probably had noticed that some of the Spanish Alphabets starts off with “e” and then the letter itself (two or one times) and ends with an “e”.
The pattern started after the letter E
These are the alphabets:
E-e
F-efe
L-ele
LL-elle
M-eme
N-ene
Ñ-eñe
R-ere
RR-erre
S-ese
Ve Chica and doble ve is very easy to memorize if you know the trick. Since, Ve sounds like the English alphabet of saying “V”. You would know that V is Ve chica (it start with a V too) and then doble ve can be view as double “V” which symbolized “W”!

Welcome to the lesson of the hundreds. You had probably noticed that every set of numbers had their own patterns, and so as the hundreds.

Numbers 100 - 999: In these set of numbers, the hundreds and the tens place don’t need to be connected by “y.” But, you need to connect the tens and the ones place by “y”

Numerals

Spanish

Pronunication

100

Cien

(see-in)

101

Ciento

(see-in-doe)

102

Ciento dos

(see-in-doe) (doe-s)

144

Ciento caurenta y cautro

(see-in-doe) (qua-ring-da) (e) (qua-joe)

200

Doscientos

(doe-s-see-in-doe-s)

202

Doscientos dos

(doe-s-see-in-doe-s) (doe-s)

300

Trescientos

(tris-see-in-doe-s)

389

Trescientos  ochenta y nueve

(tris-see-doe-s) (all-chen-da) (e) (new-wave-ve)

400

cuatrocientos

(qua-joe-see-in-doe-s)

500

Quientos

(key-in-doe-s)

600

Seiscientos

(sis-see-in-doe-s)

700

Sietecientos

(see-at-de-see-in-doe-s)

800

Ochocientos

(all-cho-see-in-doe-s)

900

Novecientos

(no-ve-see-in-doe-s)

999

Novecientos noventa y nueve

(no-ve-see-in-doe-s) (no-van-da) (e) (new-wave-ve)

  • Trick: The single number + cientos (100, plural with a “s”) + the tens place (without “y”) + y (connect the tens and the ones place) + (single number)

EX: 685

Seiscientos ochenta y cinco

or,

EX: 105

Ciento (single, no “s”) cinco

Look at the Clock: Telling Time en Español By Mingxue Zheng and Lala Doumbia

Posted by Mingxue Zheng in Spanish 1 - Bey on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 2:27 pm

What time is it?
¿Qué hara es?
pronunciation: (ke) (or-ra) (es)

Rules for timing time:

Son las vs. Es la

Only use “Es la” for only one hour because it is singular (1hr.). Instead of using uno for one hr., use una instead.
         Ex: 1:16
Es la una y diez y seis
          Ex: 7: 28
Es la siete y veinte ocho  (You can't use Es la for this example because it is seven hours instead of one hour).
Use “Son las” for two to twelve hours (2-12 hrs.).
         Ex: 7: 28
Son las siete y veinte y ocho
          Ex: 2: 05
                  Son las dos y cinco
“y” vs. “menos”:
“y” is use for 0-30mins

1.Chose Es la or Son las based on the hour

2.State the hour

3.Connect the hours and minutes with “y”

4.State the minutes

Ex: 2: 10

    Son las dos y diez

Memos is use for 31-59 mins. It means subtract.

1.Chose Es la or Son las based on the hour

2.State the hour ahead

3.Connect the hours and minutes with “memos”

4.State how many minutes it would take to be in the hour you state on step two

Ex: 4: 55

Son las cinco memos cincenta y cinco

Ex: 12: 48

      Es la una memos doce

The reason it is Es la instead of Son las is because the hour ahead of twelve is one. Therefore, it is singular.

Two ways to say 30mins. and 15mins.

You can say “treinte” or media (mad-de-ya), which means ½.

You can say diez y cinco or cuatro (qua-do-ro), which means ¼.

AM/PM:

AM: de la manaña (de) (la) (mi-ya-la)

PM (afternoon): de la tardes (de) (la) (started-this)

PM (night): de la noche (de) (la) (no-che)

Midnight: La medianocho (la) (mad-de-ya) (no-cho)
