Meeghan Kersten Capstone

Posted by Meeghan Kersten in Capstone · Block · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 2:41 pm
For my capstone, I worked with the Audubon Society to remove invasive plant species from around the reservoir. That didn't go well as most things were dead already. Instead, I found an app that allowed me to track the different trees around the reservoir. On the days when I was not able to go outside, I worked inside to create my website and do the research needed. As winter ended and it started to get warmer I began with the pullings. I would pull for about an hour or so when the weather was nice. When it wasn't I would be inside continuing my research.

"PA Native Plant Society". 2019. PA Native Plant Society. Accessed January 25 2019. http://www.panativeplantsociety.org/.

This source provides information about some different native plants. It also gives information about what is currently in bloom. It gives a description of what a native plant is. A native plant is one that occurs naturally in a particular region, ecosystem, or habitat without direct or indirect human intervention. We consider the flora present at the time Europeans arrived in North America as the species native to the eastern United States. Native plants include all kinds of plants from mosses and ferns to wildflowers, shrubs, and trees. This source will help me better understand what plants are native and which ones aren't and when each of them is in bloom.

This source provides information about what makes a plant or animal invasive. It specifically talks about what classifies it as invasive, how it spreads, and the impact that it has on the environment around it. I will use this source to better understand the impact that the invasive plants and animals have on the environment. This will make it clear and help me to understand why it is so important to remove them and replace them with native species.

"Combating Invasive Species | National Wildlife Federation". 2019. National Wildlife Federation. Accessed January 25 2019. https://www.nwf.org/Our-Work/Environmental-Threats/Invasive-Species.

This site provides information about the impact of invasive species in both plants and animals. It also provides means for how to stop the invasion as well as examples of things that are invasive and the area that they are in. Once invasive species become established and spread, it can be extraordinarily difficult and costly to control or eradicate them. As a result, the best approaches for dealing with the invasive species is to create effective mechanisms to prevent their introduction in the first place, create monitoring systems for detecting new infestations and move rapidly to eradicate newly detected invaders. I will use use source to help m determine the best possible way to get rid of the plants and replace them with new ones.

2019. Extension.Unh.Edu. Accessed January 25 2019. https://extension.unh.edu/resources/files/resource000988_rep1135.pdf

This source lists some of the native plants. It talks about some of the different care for them and the different conditions that they live in. It also includes why it is helpful to have native species and the means needed to plant native plants at home. I will use this site to help me determine which plants I should plant in the spring.

Advance Essay #1: Shifting Friendships

Posted by Meeghan Kersten in English 3 · Block · A Band on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 10:01 pm
Introduction: In writing this essay my goal was to talk about a memory from my childhood and relate it to common emotions felt while you are young and how that changes as you grow up. I am proud of how it turned out but for the future I could get help a bit sooner and make sure it flows better. Overall I am proud of my piece as well as completing the first writing assignment in my junior year.
Advanced Essay #1:

Every time I see him I am reminded. She is no longer close. When I look out my back window I am reminded of fun times and no cares in the world.  Each time he walks by a different memory flashes before my eyes but I find one coming back the most, each time more and more vivid. I don't remember how either of them came into my life but I remember them being there. I don't remember all the details of our times together but I remember the important things. The three of us would do everything we could together. Three kids, one back alley, lots of memories.

The one memory that is most vivid was playing in the rain. She and I completed each other’s outfits. I had the pants and no top and she had the top with no pants. He was running around shirtless. We splashed in puddles for hours then went into the alley behind our houses and ran until we could no more. After we were finished running we were hosed down by our parents in the back yard. We were then wrapped in big towels and carried inside the warmth of my house. That is about where my memory of that adventure ends, and I have snippets of many other times together.

Now she is off in the suburbs at a fancy school and he is back and forth between divorced parents’ houses. A friendship we swore would last forever is no more. We thought things would always be the same and never imagined how we would end up going off in different directions.

As children we see the world differently. We often see the world as sparkles and rainbows not realizing the truth of what is happening in front of us. Things that make us happy as children may not make us happy now or we may see a different side to them that we did not before. Your perspective changes as you grow older and learn more things about yourself and the world around you.

Excitement comes in many different ways. New clothes, fun trip, first bicycle, or many other things. Kids are easily excited often by the simplest things.

I remember after she moved away feeling the excitement of going to see her or spending the night over her house. I remember being excited every single time I saw him, my little heart pounding out of my chest. The excitement grew as we grew older and the visits to see her decreased and elementary school started and I would only see him after school.

Each time I saw her we made more memories and had great times leaving me more and more excited to see her again. When she moved the three of us were no more. I still saw them both but they didn't see each other, just the occasional hello when she happened to come to my house instead of me going to hers.

The excitement started to fade as we got older. She stayed where she was but made new friends, her bond growing stronger with them with each growing year as our bond weakened. He moved on from me as we grew older and became more involved with his school and new friends. And now he spends half his time with his father who moved away.  When he is here we still exchange a few words when we cross paths and he isn't sucked into his various activities or groups of friends.

Excitement is always there but fades over time as that thing you onced loved no longer brings that spark of joy to your heart it once did. Excitement will come and go as your interests and friends change. Your interests may change in different directions from others, and if you don't experience a feeling from a certain thing over time the excitement fades until it is stored in the back of your mind as a memory.

When you’re a child you think everything will last forever and things won't change. However, the reality is that most things do and will change over time. What at the time seems like a loss is now a lesson in accepting change as new friendships form and new memories are made. The friendships you create and memories you make will always have a special place in your heart no matter how far apart you and your friends drift or how many new memories you make.

Que nunca conocí

Meeghan Kersten

Soy yo

Buscando el azul del cielo,

Estoy cansada de correr,

Tengo un hermans y medio,

Yo tengo una hermana y un perro.

Veo los diferentes alturos en mí casa,

Saboreo la caserola de comida,

Oigo las conversaciones de mis padres,

Toco el suelo áspero debajo de mí,

Huelo la lluvia antes de tormenta.

Nado en la herencia de mi familia,

Duermo bajo las estrellas

Cansado de  correr

Bailo debajo las estrellas.

Somos productos de las Américas

Somos Filadelfia

Hablamos inglés:

La lengua de  pretzels suaves y granizado

Que nunca conocí.

Estoy cansada de correr.

Nosotros somos la ciudad de fraternal amor.

Growing Up Online Reflection

Posted by Meeghan Kersten in Technology - Freshman - Hull - y2 on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 4:23 pm

The TV show was called Growing Up Online. The show was about kids and how they grew up with computers, how it impacted them, and how they spent most of their time online. The thing that I remembered the most would probably have to be how people would spend so much time online that they lost their ability to communicate with others and that people would die doing a long marathon. I think it is important that we watch these shows so that we can learn from the mistakes of others and and from those of the world. I would inform them of the dangers and tell them what to do and not but encourage them to use it but only if they let me know when they make an account so I can monitor them. It is important to talk to your family about internet safety because they should know what could happen from their doings and how different things can impact you and your family. I would tell parents to make sure they know what their child is doing and monitor it the best they can and ask your fellow parents about what they do.

Reflection
I was told that i should get rid of some pictures because there was too much going on. I got rid of pictures and kept what i felt was most important to me. I was told that the quotes were hard to read so I typed them instead of having them as a photograph. I made these changes to my slide to make it easier to look at and and make it a bit more organized. Also from looking at other peoples slides I noticed that they kept it simple and to the point, so i decided to make my slide simpler.

My slide was designed on things that I enjoy doing and how I see myself. I put on my slide what I enjoy doing and the sports that I play. I also put two quotes that I like. I made some of my pictures bleed of the page for more space. I made the words big so they would be easier to see. I wanted to display the fact that I am athletic and enjoy sports. I included my horoscope sign in my slide as well. I want people to get to know me for who I really and and not just who I am perceived to be. I enjoy many other things but these are the ones I wanted to share.

In Tech class we watched a video about a little boy named Jack. The video was made by the I Am A Witness Campain. The campain had an eye emoji that you could press to do something about the bullying. This reminds me of my sister. A girl in her class teases her about herself. I am trying to ger her to let me email the consler but she keeps on pushing it aside and saying it is nothng. Online I try to post as little pictures so when you search my name you dont find anything personal. I try to not put anything online that people would bully me for and if they do I would ignore it. I can't let something like that bring down.

Home Network Kersten

Posted by Meeghan Kersten in Technology - Freshman - Hull - y2 on Friday, October 9, 2015 at 11:35 am
Hi my is Meeghan and this is my home network. They are all connected to a modem and router. On my network there are 3 phones, 3 laptops, 1 desktop, 1 wireless printer, 2 kindles, and 1 Wii.My provider is Verizon Fios. My OMG moments was when i realized just what we are paying for and how much we are paying. I would tell people that you have to be really careful because even when you think no one is around and you don't think anyone is near they could see what you are doing and get you in trouble for doing something bad or inappropriate.
