Q4 - Globilization in Philadelphia

Posted by Markia Johnson in Globalization - Laufenberg on Friday, May 25, 2012 at 11:52 pm

Slide Presentation

Reflection

The most challenging thing about this project was trying to find pictures of things that really related to the point of globalization I wanted it to. Finding things around the city to takes pictures of also seemed difficult at first. I had to really go out and see what i could take pictures of and just think of some ways that the world outside of my country effected me. Picking subjects for the pictures came to me after looking at and going through some of my classmates pictures. After doing that i was able to ask them why they took certain pictures. Then ask myself the same question and how would I go about representing this topic differently.
Out of all the Images, I must say that my favorite is the recycle bin. This may seem somewhat strange but I really like that picture because its so bright and it is perfectly clear what picture is about and what topic it is related to. In all of my pictures the subject is very clear. However the picture of the recycle bin amuses me, I just smile every time I look at it. After completing this project I feel like globalization in Philadelphia is not hard to see. It is easy to miss but once you think about it you can see it almost every where.
Most likely easier to see globalization in Philadelphia than some other cities. It really depends on how large the city is, the bigger the city the harder to exactly what is effecting what. Here we are a large city but small enough to not be overwhelmed. if we stop think and look around we can think about how something outside of our city has effected what we do in our city.

Collapse five part frame work Q3 bench

http://collapse5pointframework.weebly.com/

For my benchmark I choose the Bulgaria and El Salvador. To complete this project I review information that I gathered in past work in class taking some information and implementing it in my project. As well as looking up additional information wot work with. After all my information was gathered i had to figure out how I wanted to present my information. I attmepted to use wordpress but  I had difficulty manuevering the website so i use something I knew i could work with.
Working with the five point frame work made making this much easier for me. Reasearching information also became easier because I alreayd knew what i was lookingfor and the information would be easier to digest. If I had to change anything about my project it would most likely be the layout of my project. As of right now it looks satisfatory but I feel like I could havemade it more entertaining and pleasing to the eye. Other than that I dont think i would change much about my project.

World of 100 Analysis

Screen shot 2012-02-10 at 11.34.00 AM
In this graph it seems that I was closer to what the correct answer is than that of the class average, when it comes to the people  who have safe drinking water. In the second part of the graph I am still on the right track it seems. It is interesting that the class average is basically the same on both parts of the graph. i would have thought that the class or I would have been on the right path to the correct answer. However the correct answer for this graph seems much more drastic than most of the class assumed.

Screen shot 2012-02-10 at 11.33.20 AM
In this graph I was a bit closer to the actual answer than the class average. I expected the literacy for woman to be a higher than what it is. However I live in a place where it is expected for women to be to read and write, it is considered normal. As a result of this my numbers are skewed. I think the class average is very optimistic, even with my optimism I know that the class assumption is way too even to be true.

Screen shot 2012-02-10 at 11.34.15 AMIn this graph I expected North America to have a higher percentage than it actually does. I tried to keep in mind the size of each country because the size of the actual country would effect its percentage in the graph. I did not expect the percentage for Asia to be as high as it is. I thought that Africa and Asia would be closer to each other in number with Europe and  North America just behind them. I am also surprised that the the number of from the Caribbean is , in my opinion, much higher than I assumed.

Analysis:
I was most accurate to the correct answer for the drinking water. I think out of all of the categories I picked I think my optimism didn't effect my thinking when I considering the numbers for who had and did not have safe drinking water. My most inaccurate assumption was graph with the geography. I tried to keep in mind the size of the actual country because I knew this would effect the numbers. Though I knew this my numbers were still very wrong. I believe the reason I did so is because I thought that North America would be higher that it was.

The real answer that shocked me the most was the drinking water. Originally I thought that that statistic would be backwards with clean water being the smaller percentage. I know that humanity doesn't use most of the worlds water we re-used all of the water we use so I thought as a result of this there would would more with less access to clean water.

I think that Most of my assumptions were a mixture of what I learned throughout the years and what I am exposed to on a daily. I learned about the facts of the world in school but I live in only one part of it. Where live may have effected some of decisions what thinking of the numbers I assigned in each category.

Film Review : The Island

Posted by Markia Johnson in Digital Video -4 day a week - Herman on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 12:56 am

The Island, written by Caspain Tredwell-Owen, directed by Michael Bay, and released in 2005, is a sci - fi thriller about two people who find out that they are clones, created only to be harvested for for their organs. In the beginning after the first initial scene of the main character having a vivd nightmare of drowning the movie proceeds to show the Mis- en- Scene. A modern futuristic environment with people whose daily lives are regulated according to the standards of others. Most of the shots beginning of the film are medium shots with lighting that dramatizes the shot. To me it seems like the lights are always positioned so that shines from directly under or above a characters faces. This gives their faces a sort of shadow about them. The shots in this film don't differentiate until the middle of the film when most of the thrill and action takes place.

The Dialogue in the film gives just enough information so that the viewer's curiosity is only furthered. Most of the dialogue in the film is not accompanied by music or the music is very very low. The music , just like the camera shots, doesn't start to become more prominent until the action and thrill starts. In some scenes it takes the place of dialogue. For instance, when the main characters leave the environment the movie opens in , the music is loud and gives off the character emotions. The characters themselves were well casted wonderfully, I felt each person was really into their role. They made it seem believable, well as believable as this story could be.

The editing of this film was particularly good during the most action packed part of the film when a lot of car crashes and building breaking was taking place. The point of view of the camera changed from close up to  to wide or panning. The actors the coloring and everything else, to me blended beautifully. I quite enjoyed this film. I cannot say that I was blown away by it buy did enjoy it. i could see myself watching this film again or suggestion it to someone I know. Over all i give this film a 7.5 out of 10.

Reflection :
My partner and I chose this topic because in the requirements aid that we had to talk about something that we felt relates to us. Since we go to a technology based school we decided to do something that had to do with censoring and student free speech. It was thoroughly enjoying to complete this project because I was able to learn about cases in the past. During a time when students didn't really have much of a say in anything.
Other than that my partner and I were really able to talk about and form our own opinions about our topic. One of the things we research that made me really think about the different ways students can express their free speech rights was the case of Tinker v. Des Moines. The entire case was the school district opposing black bands being worn in protest of the Vietnam war. I really wanted our project to make people think  about how student free speech has and has not changed since then.
I think we did a good job of making people think afte they watched the video but some of the imagery in our project could have been better. For example, when we posted some of the things we as students have to deal with we should have had a visual behind the text of something related. Other than that I believe our product came out well my partner and I really collaborated to create our video, and personally I really think we did a good job.Our video was interesting and related students today with the first amendment. We learned ourselves about the fine line between what is seen as inappropriate and self expression.

Lobbying Post #3: College Tuition

Posted by Markia Johnson on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 8:00 am

This is a bad year for the relationship between college students and the government. Students are frustrated with the constant  increase of tuition prices. It has reached a piont where they feel as if the only way to change their predicament , or at least get a more immediate attention to it, is to protest. This usually leads to violence or arrest for students students, which is good for no one. So far there has been little news about anything changing in favor of the students.

For private institutions trustee board members are the people who carry the authority when it comes to tuition increases. However, for state colleges if little funding is given from the government, increases are inevitable. To change anything, I believe, the support of state officials are needed, they would most likely be them most accessible  To attempt to try and plead the the U.S. Department of Education to fight for education to be seen as more of a priority.Students around the country are protesting the constant rising of their tuition prices.

I believe to make any type of change college students must really look to who is in what  office in their local areas, more specifically who is their state representative. Students should come together and try and contact their representative to get this issue addresses and to ask what should they be doing to really change their predicament besides protesting or just dropping out. Hopefully by doing this there will be more done about this within the next year or so. If not college may be too far out of reach financially, for many high school students in America.

Liquor License

My partner and I choose to look up the steps to apply for a liquor license in Pennsylvania. For instance what needs to be done before even filling out any paper work, the basics. Of course, you have to be of the legal drinking age to and no criminal background. Other than that you have to have things like a have a seller's permit from the state department of revenue and a good location thats meets Pennsylvanias state quota. That is only the beginning of the process to make sure you qualify. After that there is a packet of paperwork that needs to be filled out, it isn't very difficult to fill out , just basic information on the owner(s) and what type of establishment you are trying to apply for. I'm not sure what I would change, to me, everything that is part of the process to get a liquor license seems to be appropriate and fair to make sure places that sell alcohol are well monitored. There may have been incidents concerning different establishments thats sell alcohol thats made the PLCB board want to make the process more full proof. I like the fact that Pennsylvania has a quota system for liquor licenses. I feel that this decision was for the best , this keeps alcohol distribution more evenly match with the people in the area.

Lobbying Post #2 : Curtis Jones

I live in philadelphia county's  4th district and I am represented by Councilman Curtis Jones.Councilman Jones graduated from Overbook high school then attending the University of Pennsylvania's Fels School of Government and Boston University. Councilman Jones has been apart of the city government for the past seven mayoral administrations. He serves on many different committees and councils in philadelphia and is very keen on it's the preservation. Promoting community development and educational stability.
When concerning education in philadelphia Coucilman Jones voted in favor of not cutting the philadephia school districts budget. Saying "As I have stated from the very beginning of this school budget crisis, we will either pay now with the proper investment in public education or we will pay later by funding prisons and parole officers." As said before Jones is very adamant about philadelphia's youth, community development, and education. It does not seem as thought college students and the recent increase in tuition cost around the state are a major concern for Jones at the moment.
As far as commonalities between Coucilman Jones and myself go, there are some. For example , we have both attended schools within the philadelphia school district and lived in some of the same areas and we both want Philadelphia to thrive. Now Jones is the representative for my current location within philadelphia.

There are may perceptions of Indians but the most famous and usually perceived as accurate version comes from the movie, "Pocahontas" and our website is created to give people a chance to learn about how media has been used as an tool to teach manipulated history. We hope that you learn from this website and use it as an example to further your thinking of history and how it's perceived in media.

I was unsure as to which Bill i should choose or that I was interested in so I choose a bill that I had learned about in a previous class. I choose to present it in a movie format because originally i wanted to make a video but I ended up making a Keynote for it and exporting it in the form of a movie. I felt that i would be able to get more information in my presentation this way. One of the only parts of this presentation that was somewhat difficult was finding more information to go with what I already knew. This is an older bill that doesn't seem to be coming back anytime soon. As a result the information concerning it was a little harder to find. If I had to do this over I would most likely have made a straight video most likely acting it out, it wold have been awesome. I researched major events in the years before or during the year of the creation of the bill. The process for actually finding the information overall was a bit harder than I thought it would be because i had to go to so many different places to know or understand what was happening

SCOTUS Case :Douglas v. The Independent Living Center Of Southern California

Posted by Markia Johnson in American Government - Laufenberg on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 7:51 pm

I was assigned to following the case "Douglas v. The independent Living Center of Southern California". in California there is a tight financial situation and one of the states larger  expense is Healthcare. As a result in 2008 and 2009 the state cut 1-10% of the Medi - Cal reimbursement budget .The main topic (question/concern) of "Douglas v. Independent Living Center of Southern California" is  not the legality of the actual cuts to the health care budget. It is whether or not the healthcare beneficiaries and providers can sue the state for not meeting the required reimbursement rates.
Medicaid is  federally funded healthcare that reimburses healthcare providers for servicing individuals who qualify. If a state chooses accept federal funding it is mandatory  that the state  give out a reasonable amount of money to medicare providers, If not the funding for healthcare for the state will be shut down.
Medicaid providers and recipients in California attempted  to sue the state  to prevent budget cuts. The healthcare providers are using the  Supremacy Clause , which basically states that federal law trumps state law. If the state is not following the federal law then the state can be sued under there Ex Parte Young , which would allow the state to be sued for acting in a unconstitutional manner .
The case reached the Supreme Court in October of 2011. The defense has made a point that if this is allowed federal agencies will be bombarded with other cases thats are also arguing that the state is not following the federal law. Making it difficult for them to handle anything but the cases. The prosecution responded saying they had no intention of doing this they just simply wanted to make sure they are allowed to exercise their rights to fight.
A decision has not been reach as of yet. The Supreme Court is expected to have a final ruling  sometime next year. The case is not expected to rule in favor of the people and providers  of the California medicare system. Personally I do not expect to see them come out completely successful either because the defense most laws likely correct when they said that other organizations or people will also try and sue the, state arguing that it has acted unconstitutionally. If the state has acted as such it should be handled fairly and not given a final ruling under the impression that if it as allowed it will only bring chaos. Sadly the case will most likely be given a ruling with future cases in mind. Therefore not allowing these organizations to sue the state.

Lobbying:Continuous inflation of College Tuition

Posted by Markia Johnson in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 1:18 am
College fees are on a continuing rise. Each year, or mid-year, tuition increases are making it difficult for families to pay for their children's education. As a result some have no choice but to leave their colleges or  knowingly burry themselves in debt. Only to come out of college to pay off loans in an already damaged economy. Universities' aren't getting enough State financial support and are in turn charging more, cutting enrollment, and letting go os staff and teachers. If this stays the same only a small percentage of students will be able to afford graduating college.
In today's society it is difficult to be successful in life without a college education. The world needs educated people to continue to function. Without them there will be a shortage of phycisians, lawyers, teachers, and most of all students. Unless changes are made to the educational financial state that colleges are in , there will be a serious drop in qualified individuals to take certain roles in society.
College students across the country have started to protest against these institutions that continue to raise tuition each year. Regrettably there haven't been many changes to help universities with the ever pressing issue. Eductions needs to be moved up on our nations list of priorities. Starting with a new budget for school districts and Universities all over the country. Students should be able to have a choice to  receive a form of higher learning or not. However, if nothing changes in the nations outlook on education then that option will be taken away for many.

What If : Trail of Tears

My Project

My Sources
  • What did you like about this project? What was most challenging?

I think the most challenging part of the part  of this project was actually finding something to change and then put it together.

  • Describe the most interesting fact or event that you investigated.

One of the more interesting things in this project that i investigated was the assimilation of choctaw indians. They really tried to blend and adopt our culture. Even though they did this they still were not accepted.

  • How do the actions of individuals impact the historical record?

One person can change the course of a whole event. Making their impact a large one on society and history.

  • How do systemic changes impact the historical record?

If a system changes then there has to be adjustment within the rest of the system. If any part goes without adjustment then a part of the historical record could be lost.
  • How influential can one decision be in the historical landscape?
One decision as well as one person can change history very dramatically. This one thing can change a historical landscape completely.
  • How could this project be improved?

I think my project could be better if my design was a little better looking and if i had more sources.

  • If you had it to do over, what would you change about your process for the project?

I would have gone over my idea with Ms.laufenburg a little more and i also would have chosen a different subject . Along with that i would have tried to make my sources look more professional or ask for more help

400x400
400x400

a. What went well?
Our collaboration with the information we found and the creation of the visual itself went well for our group. We didnt really have any problems or disagreement.

b. What did not?
Nothing really went wrong with our project it was swell.

c. What would you do differently next time?

Next time i would look up more information about my topic. Just to have more sources to pull from. I would also organize our bibliography differently.

d. Specifically comment on the 10 tips for effective infographics -

Be Concise

Be Visual

Be Smarter

Be Transparent

Be Different

Be Accurate

Be Attractive

Be Varied

Be Gracious

Be Creative

I think our project was creative, attractive, different, visual, smarter, concise and accurate. I am not as sure about the transparent aspect of our infographic but i do know that it meets all of the other requirements. Our idea was originally supposed to be different but I think it turned out well. I especially like the way we mixed our information in with the way our design, I think that is one the best parts of our infographic. The only part of our project that was a bit difficult is the way we created it. Since we made it in photoshop we had to make sure that it did not turn our too pixelated when we uploaded it.

English Only?

Posted by Markia Johnson on Monday, March 14, 2011 at 1:47 pm

Script For Live Performance:

The first half will be for the people who do want America to be English only and then the second half will be about the people who don't want it to be English only.

Intro Quote:

Markia will stand at a podium or something that stands up. And read this quote as if it was her saying it.

"We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

-Theodore Roosevelt

1st Video: Pro English-Only Movement Video

Doug and Anna will recite a poem

Poem:

No hablo ingles

I do not speak English
Is what she told them.

They stared at her with foreign eyes

As if she was a (unknown) species.

With foreign weapons they took hold of her

Then pushed her aside

All because she couldn't understand their language.

With confusion in her mind

And scorn in her heart

Because she didn't understand their ways.

Land of the free

Home of the brave..

At least that's what she thought..

Reeled in by Lady Liberty's fishing hook

Brought in under the façade (fassssaadd) that everyone may have

The American Dream.

But instead of moving forward into the American Dream

She was pressed into the American Nightmare..

No hablo ingles

Entonces no sé que lo dices.

I do not speak English
So I know not what you say

No hablo ingles

Entonces no puedo quedarse aquí

I do not speak English
Therefore I can not stay here

she can't be in these schools..

she can't reach the American Dream

If she can't grow in America's Community

her lack of Education binds her down

To become a prisoner in this system.

her people came here off of the values

America no longer holds dear.

Lady Liberty's love replaced by Uncle Sam's greed.

All of us as humans have our rights

la vida, la libertad, y la búsqueda de la felicidad

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness

Or was that just another lie.

2nd Video: Anti English-Only Movement

Anna and Markia will recite his last poem to end it all.

Life is what you make it
But to make a life with discrimination
Is like making a building
With sticks
Easily toppled with little stability..
People aren't always understood
Not because of their language
But because of their culture.
The origin of people
Etched in stone on the pages in books of history
Told by word of mouth
But the language in which their stories are told
Is being restricted by those who call this
The land of the free

Valley girl vernacular:

Omg the only way to like avoid this problem of like splitting  up is to like come together with God. and like love, walk and like talk with god, as one person, and i mean like always stay together and treat each other like you know the good way. Not only that but we have to like make sure we go through our things and get rid of anything that is last season and give them to you know like the needy.  We must always stay together and love each other. We have to like to do everything together cry, put on make up, and even walk our dogs together. We have to always think of the people like around us and think about keeping the peace and if we do that god will be happy with us.

British vernacular:

You see God will command a blessing on our ways, so we can see so much more of his wisdom, goodness, and truth then we had been aquatinted with and discover that the God of Israel is with us. When ten of us will be able to face many of our enemies. Our story will be remembered by succeeding generations. AS the Lord made it for New England. That we shall be a city on the hill. Everyone is watching us, so if we are naughty and do wrong with our god in what we do, he will withdraw his present from us. We will be made a story.

Stereotypical black vernacular:

And everybody in da world gotta let the enemies talk. Let em talk! Let em talk about God and teachers and all-uh-dat. And anybody who talkin' bout praying to multiple gods and having servants. I'm like What? There is only ONE God! Forget all of them! They really need to shut up!

Sub Vernacular (  a way of speaking created by SLA students ):

Listen don't be a sub. You have to follow what the lord says in his commandments so we can go forward and bring some children into the world and the Lord won't firesub us and neglect us forever. But forreal formal we could sub his commandments. And follow other Gods to help ourselves but I don't want the boul to spaz out and kill us.

Stereotypical black vernacular:

We gotta live… So our children could live. Do what God says. Listen to him because he da only Lord and the Only way!
