Adolescents, Crime and Brain Development.-Maggie Clampet-Lundquist

Adolescents, Crime and Brain Development.

Ghani  is a friend of my mom’s. When he was fifteen years old he and another friend of his came from New York to Philadelphia to work with a drug gang. His friend and he were put inside of an abandoned house where they were locked in a room and sold drugs through a slit in the door, and they were brought food and water through the slit in the door. They were trapped, desperate, and fifteen years old and their brains weren’t thinking about the consequences of their actions, so when the next person came to the door they killed him so they could escape. Ghani and his friends were both tried as adults as many teenagers are even though that shouldn’t be the case. There is no doubt that what Ghani and his friend did is wrong, but should they have been tried as adults?

The rational region (frontal lobe) of a teen’s brain won’t be fully developed until the age of twenty-five. The frontal lobe contains a region called the prefrontal cortex which lets us organize our thoughts, anticipate consequences, plan, and control impulses. “The frontal lobe undergoes far more change during adolescence than at any other stage of life.” It is also the last part of the brain to develop, which means that even as they become fully capable in other areas, adolescents cannot reason as well as adults. Under development of rational thinking causes teens to rely on emotional parts of the brain, rather than the frontal lobe.”  A scientist who studies adolescent brains explains, “one of the things that teenagers seem to do is to respond more strongly with gut response than they do with evaluating the consequences of what they’re doing.” Ghani and his friend didn’t kill the man out of act of violence, they killed him based on emotion. They felt trapped. They were trapped! Unfortunately our legal system doesn’t recognize that that teenage are more likely to do mindless thing because they lack rational thinking.

Prosthetics-Maggie Clampet-Lundquist

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in Science And Society - Best - E on Friday, May 27, 2016 at 7:34 pm
Science: A prosthetic is a device, either external or implanted, that substitutes for or supplements a missing or defective part of the body. A prosthetic is different depending on the level of physical condition/abilities and needs. Prosthetic technology has advanced so much that each prosthetic is custom made. They can look like whatever the patient wants whether that might be functional,  or looking like a natural limb. A prosthetic is connected to a socket which allows the prosthetic to connect to your dead limb. There is a layer that called the: Addition Layer. The additional layer is a piece of fabric that separated the skin from the prosthetic. The inside of the socket is made with a soft material that makes it comfortable. Limbs need to be amputated so the risk of infection decreases. The doctors would begin by cutting into the skin the cut has to be accurate so it will heal accurately and leave minimal scarring. A lot of the muscle is cut off during the amputation but a lot thought has to go into reshaping the muscle tissue that is still there, this is important because the padding provides around the bone after surgery. The padding is also important for maintaining a healthy stump and is important when it comes to fitting the prosthetic.

Society:In the United States there are 2 million people who have a prosthetic body part. Prosthetics cost anywhere from five to fifty thousand dollars, but no matter the cost prosthetic have to be replaced every three to five years because of wear and tear. The most common way for people to lose a limb is through Vascular disease fifty four percent of the United States has this disease. Prosthetics aren’t only for people, they are also for animals.  Like humans, animals can have limb defects causing them to have a prosthetic body part.

Self: I think prosthetics are an amazing invention!

Maggie Clampet-Lundquist Capstone

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in Capstone - Jonas - Wed on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 5:00 pm
After struggling to come up with an idea/topic for my capstone, I finally decided on creating a documentary about The Philadelphia Girls Choir. I have been singing with the girls choir for four years, so I decided to make a video about the choir, that I could give to the choir as a way of saying thank you. The documentary is located on Vimeo, where anyone can watch it. Creating this film allowed me to reflect on my experiences in the choir, I realized that the girls in the choir weren’t just people I sang with but they were like a second family. I filmed every Thursday and  Saturday which  are the two days  the choir practices, having to work with cameras helped me acquired many camera/video skills from putting this film together. I learned how to attach a microphone to a camera so it could record and capture the sound at the same time as well as how to take what I had recorded and transfer it onto the computer. I learned how to edit/put together a film in iMovie and camera skills in general. I plan on continuing to film the last couple month of choir experience and adding it onto my already existing video. I hope everyone enjoys the film as much as I enjoyed making it.

Annotated Bibliography:

  1. "Philadelphia Girls Choir." Philadelphia Girls Choir. Web. 05 Feb. 2016. <http://www.phillygirlschoir.org/>.

I used this website because it describes the choir I’m focusing on: The Philadelphia Girls Choir. The website talks about how the choir was started and why, this will be useful in my project when explaining what the choir is about.

  1. "Pennsylvania Girls Choir." Pennsylvania Girls Choir. Web. 5 Feb. 2016. <http://www.pennsylvaniagirlchoir.org/>.

I used this website because not only am I going to talk about the choir that I’m apart of I’m going to talk about choirs in philadelphia in general as well. This is one of the best known choirs besides the philadelphia Boys Choir and it does similar things as my choir and so I thought I could compare the two. This is a reliable source because it’s the choir's website.

  1. "How to Create a Good Documentary Film." WikiHow. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.<http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Good-Documentary-Film>.

I’ve never made a documentary before and I'm great at working on Imovie this site walks me through the process of both of these things so it will be useful to look at when I’m editing my documentary and filming it. This is a reliable source.

  1. "Welcome!" Philadelphia Boys Choir. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.

The choir that I’m in is the sister choir to the Philadelphia Boys Choir. We practice in the same building, we sing together at events, and we do things together outside of rehearsal they are a big part of my choir even though they are boys. Since the boys choir was so successful they decided to make a girls choir and that's how the Philadelphia Girls Choir was made. This is a reliable source because its their website.

  1. "How to Use IMovie to Make History Documentaries Complete." YouTube. YouTube. Web. 05 Feb. 2016. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku3mQr3vigw>.

I’m not familiar with Imovie this site is a step by step tutorial video, that walks you through the process of editing and doing voice overs. This will help me because I’m making a documentary. This is a reliable source because the person who created the video used Imovie and shows you exactly what to do.

  1. "Vocal Techniques Learn, Laugh & Interact at Www.vocalist.org.uk." Vocalist. Web. 05 Feb. 2016. <http://www.vocalist.org.uk/vocal_techniques.html>.

Singing is all about the voice, there are many different techniques and forms of singing depending on where and how you sing for example an opera singer uses different techniques than a choral singer. I want to talk about some of the techniques we use because they will be shown in the video, I don’t know much about the techniques and this website will help expand my knowledge. This is a reliable source because after each technique they give a description and where you can find more information.

  1. "How the Voice Works." American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. 2014. Web. 05 Feb. 2016. <http://www.entnet.org/content/how-voice-works>.

When you sing you use your voice. This is my extent of knowledge on the voice, being someone who sings in a choir it important to know about the voice, your voice. This website describes how sound is produced from your voice, it breaks it down so that I’ll be able to explain it. This is a reliable source because the person that created the site knows a lot about the voice.

  1. "How To Sing Properly." Become-A-Singing-Master.com. Web. 05 Feb. 2016. <http://www.become-a-singing-master.com/how-to-sing-properly.html>.

Singing properly is something my choir director talks about but I never knew why, so this is one of the things I wanted to explore deeper in my project. This website talks about why singing properly is important and how to do that. This is a reliable source because this person has experience singing.

  1. "Winging It." : The History of the Choir. Web. 05 Feb. 2016. <http://birdsoftheair.blogspot.com/2006/07/history-of-choir.html>.

Half of my project is a documentary and half of my project is talking about the history of church choirs because my choirs is a choir that sings a lot of spiritual songs. This website talks about why church choirs sing mainly spiritual songs when they could sing a wide range of genres. This is a reliable source because the person who wrote the website was in a church choir.

  1. "Determine Things That Can Damage Your Singing Voice." - VisiHow. Web. 05 Feb. 2016. <http://visihow.com/Determine_Things_That_Can_Damage_Your_Singing_Voice>.

This website is about different ways you can damage your voice. One of the ways that you can damage your voice described on the website and the most common is by singing incorrectly, by not getting enough breath or trying to sing lower or higher than you know you can.

Maggie's Artist Blog Post

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 12:26 am
I really enjoyed the assignments this quarter because I was able to play around and develop my skills in creating pictures out of simple shapes and colors. I have always enjoyed coloring. It’s something that I find very relaxing. I decided to use bright colors in all of pictures, because I think that using bright colors help make an image stand out more. I chose to color a sheet covered in flowers, a painting by Picasso, and an Indian woman. For the self portrait I took inspiration from a picture that I took last year on halloween. I used this photo as inspiration because halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. The basic shape assignment was the assignment I liked the best, because it forced me to draw something in  a new light. It allowed me to put my own spin on the drawing,  like the animal shape and valve assignment did as well.

Quarter 2 Art Portfolio

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 1:59 pm

I wanted to make a collage of something/or someone that I love. I’ve always loved Audrey Hepburn and so I decided to make a collage about her. Before making my collage I did a little  research on Audrey Hepburn and discovered that she was born during the time of Nazi Germany, but the most interesting fact I learned was that she at bulbs of Tulips to stay alive and so I decided to make the shape of my collage a tulip bulb.

For the draw fabric assignment I decided to draw a gown. I’ve always loved and been interested in fashion and so this was my favorite assignment in quarter 2.  Before I started drawing I did some research on what draw fabrics looked like. I found a lot of images of what looked like to be drawing of a big sheet or clothing.

The picture I chose to edit is of my sister and I. I chose this photo because this is one of my favorite photos of my sister and I. This photo was originally taken in color.

I based my illustration off of a Shel Silverstein poem called: Early Bird. The first poetry book I had had this poem in it. It’s also where I learned the phrases: early bird get the worm. I decided to draw a picture of a bird because it’s the main subject of the poem.

McCarthy Unabridged: The Road, Page 259

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in Being Human - Giknis - C on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 12:16 pm

The passage below is what I believe was cut from McCarthy’s The Road:

I watched the boy, his words struck me, he had matured. I wanted to say something but I had no words. The boy wouldn’t talk to me anyway. I looked back the man was standing where I had left him, naked. Even from this far away I could tell how gaunt he was. I averted my gaze and looked at the boy who was now quietly sobbing. I wish he would stop. I continued to watch the boy as he slothed along. The man felt warm arm arise in his throat. He put his hand to his mouth trying to suppress the cough, but it only muffled it. His paced slowed.

“Stop trying to protect me and cough.”

By the time I removed my hand my cough had slithered back down my throat, all that was left was the blood on my hand. He knew. He knew I wasn’t doing well. I could feel the boy’s eyes watching me think. The boy wouldn’t last long after I was gone. Stripping that man’s clothing made me a bad guy in the boy’s eyes. We wouldn’t have gotten this far without being eaten or shackled if I thought/acted like the boy every thought, intention, tear based solely on others.

Here is the rationale for the choices I made

I placed my creative piece on page 259 on McCarthy’s The Road, right underneath the part when the boy says: I am the one. I chose this part of the book because this scene was so powerful to me. I want to go more indepth in showing how the boy and the man are so different,  and how their means of survival differ. I wanted this scene to start off where McCarthy left off. In the beginning scene the father is contemplating his relationship with the boy after making that man strip down. On page 259 McCarthy shows the boy sobbing and looking back at the man and letting his father know that he was the one who has to worry, which I believe is the most powerful thing the boy said in the book. It lets us know that the boy is beginning to realize he is going to be on his own.

My essential question was: What does it mean to survive. This question had been something that I’d thought a lot about when reading The Road. Throughout the book we have seen the boy show compassion over and over again just as we’ve seen the man do whatever needs to be done to keep him and the boy alive. I thought it was interesting to see the boy stick up for the people his father was going to harm. I decided to elaborate on this scene further because it was in my mind a perfect example of the boy sticking up for the person his father was going to harm. I wanted to give more insight on the father's thoughts. I want to make sure that people understand the importance of this page, of this scene, and I thought that a good way to show this was by writing from the the perspective of the father.

I started my creative piece out with the father reacting to what the boy said: “I am the one.” I wanted the father react to what the boy said to the fact that he had show compassion again toward someone who had taken something from them. I wanted the boy to lash out to show that he didn't need his father to take care of him anymore, to let his father know that he could take care of himself. I noticed that McCarthy didn’t have the father express his feelings or opinions on the boy’s compassion in the book that often and that is something that I would have liked to see more of. I had the boy lash out at his father in my creative scene.

Mp1 Art Work

For my ceiling tile I wanted to draw something that gave me a feeling of peace, thats why I chose to paint a sunflower. I think sunflowers are one of the most incredible flowers. They have so many unique qualities like growing towards the sun, and being made up of tiny flowers. When I look at a sunflower I get that warm fuzzy feeling inside and I feel at peace.

For my drawing I made several different pieces instead of one big one. What inspired my art was my grandmother. My grandma loved to doodle and so when creating my art I didn’t make it have a common theme, instead I decided to doodle.

For my pumpkin I drew a scary looking tree. I drew a tree because my family has a tradition: we watch scary movies until halloween arrives. In every movie that we have watched there is always an ominous looking tree and thats what inspired me to draw a tree.

I’m not very proud of my self portrait, I’ve never been able to draw people but I worked hard on it and I feel good about that. I modeled this drawing on a photo I took last year.

Life is Now or Never By: Maggie and Katia

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in Being Human - Giknis - C on Monday, October 26, 2015 at 11:58 pm

For the first quarter benchmark we were told to create a response to a piece of literature that reflected our society today. We brainstormed ideas/themes that would capture the our generation. We pulled themes from books and, videos that related to our theme For further analysis of how this project click the links as you continue to read.

My partner and I decided to make our literature piece a rap album written by a young woman who emigrated to the U.S. when she was a teenager.  The album is called Life Is Now Or Never, because it describes humans not finding meaning in their lives  today. The album contains 10 songs, each one telling a different story; however they all speak of humans in the modern day. Today, everyone can create their own worlds on the internet, but at the same time they are ignoring the real world they live in. In other words, people  just watch life pass them by and do nothing because they are too busy trying to  make their fake worlds perfect. Although people can connect faster and for a lot longer, they also lose meaningful people; and they stop valuing things like friendship. Technology take us away from each other, and as a result we do not care about for one another. There are so many other reasons that cause humans to be less like humans, but the main reason is the advancement and development of technology.

We chose an emigrant to be the artist, because we were thinking about the differences between under developed countries and really developed ones.  We often think that people in developed countries have much better lives than those in under developed countries only because they have better resources. However, that is not necessarily the truth.  People in developed countries definitely have easier lives than those in under developed ones, but that does not mean that they are happier. It may be the complete opposite. People who live in under developed countries do not have technology that distracts them from enjoying life; so people care a lot more about each other, and even they suffer, they struggle all together. However in developed countries, people seem to do the same thing everyday, they run after money so they can  provide  themselves.

My partner and I thought that the artist should host an album release party. There’s not a real album, so we could not host a real party; that’s why we made a poster with an invitation to the party, and the album cover picture. The album cover is a picture of two people holding hands and that represents the union of human beings.

For the audience response, one of us pretended to be the artist and did a question and answer youtube video. We thought that it would be really important for the artist to interact with her audience directly, instead of  appearing on TV, news papers ad magazines; because the simplicity of the artist would draw the audience, it would prove that she is not conceited and she’s not just writing to write but to convey her ideas and transfer a message.

For the cultural fabric, we did a news paper article (Click here: https://docs.google.com/a/scienceleadership.org/document/d/1k0MpWH5F1Ui-mHuPrHRDUwSt8P5fO97hNXPaZI-AkOs/edit?usp=sharing) that  asks whether Finn who’s our artist the only person who thinks this way. To answer this question, we talked about a book and two movies which we compared to the album. The reason why we chose a news paper article that asks the public a question, is because we thought that it would make the public to think about the question and try to answer it; so that way they’ll know if they also think like Finn or not.

My Fair Lady

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 7:39 pm

Shakespeare’s Taming Of The Shrew, is about a man named Petruchio who is paid to “tame” a “wild” woman named Katherina. In the beginning of the story Katherina is portrayed as independent, and one that’s quick with words. Petruchio is portrayed as proud, and believes that he can “tame” Katherina with the right training, which he does so by starving her. “My Fair Lady” was created in 1964. A wealthy linguist’s friend challenges him, and states that he cannot make a poor woman (Audrey Hepburn) into an aristocrat. Much like Katherina, Eliza (Audrey Hepburn) is very quick with her words, as well as independent not only because she doesn’t have a home but because her father isn’t much of a father. Another parallel is Henry (Rex Harrison) is very similar to Petruchio. Henry’s goal throughout the movie is to try and “tame” Eliza, to make her into someone that society would respect. Though the storylines are similar, Petruchio and Katherina have different intentions than Henry and Eliza. Having to be tamed/worked to be acceptable in society shows that women are still being taken advantage of and are still seen as objects.

“I will be master of what is mine own: She is my goods, my chattels; she is my house, My household stuff, my field, my barn, My horse, my ox, my ass, my anything; And here she stands, touch her whoever dare.” This quote shows the beginning stages of Petruchio “taming” Katherina. Petruchio is showing dominance, by setting rules for Katherina. Petruchio in this scene has already started to take advantage of Katherina by implying that she has lost all her rights. By marrying Petruchio, Katherina has lost her right because she is his “property.”

In “My Fair Lady” Eliza finds herself in a situation similar to Katherina’s. Eliza has decided that she wants to be a part of the wealthy society, so she seeks help from Henry Higgins. Henry agrees to help her naturally since the bet has already been placed, but he doesn’t agree without making sure Eliza understands the rules:. “If you work hard and do as you're told, you shall sleep in a proper bedroom, have lots to eat, and money to buy chocolates and go for rides in taxis. But if you are naughty and idle, you shall sleep in the back kitchen amongst the black beetles, and be walloped by Mrs. Pearce with a broomstick. At the end of six months you will be taken to Buckingham Palace, in a carriage, beautifully dressed. If the king finds out you are not a lady, you will be taken to the Tower of London, where your head will be cut off as a warning to other presumptuous flower girls! But if you are not found out, you shall have a present... of, ah... seven and six to start life with as a lady in a shop. If you refuse this offer, you will be the most ungrateful, wicked girl, and the angels will weep for you.” Like Petruchio, Henry is beginning to “tame” Eliza.

“By George, she's got it! By George she's got it!” In both of these scenes we can see that Eliza has been molded into a beautiful aristocrat; she not only looks wealthy, she acts like it. The photo on right shows Eliza attending a horse race, in the scene on the left Eliza is attending a ball held by the queen. At the end of the scene on the right Henry says: “By George, she's got it! By George she's got it!” By saying “By George, she's got it!” Henry is implying that she has been tamed.

“Petruchio confidently suggests a test to see which of the three new husbands has the most obedient wife. Each of them will send for his wife, and the one whose wife obeys first will be the winner….Finally, Grumio goes back to get Kate, and she returns at once, to the great surprise of all but Petruchio.” Much like the scene from “My Fair Lady,” the fact that Katherina was the only one to come shows she's obedient. This shows the level of power that Petruchio has over Katherina.

In the end of Taming of the Shrew Bianca speaks out in front of her husband. In the beginning of the book Katherina would have stood by what her sister said, but instead she turned to Bianca and said: “Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee, And for thy maintenance commits his body To painful labour both by sea and land, To watch the night in storms, the day in cold, Whilst thou liest warm at home, secure and safe, And craves no other tribute at thy hands But love, fair looks, and true obedience, Too little payment for so great a debt. . . .My mind hath been as big as one of yours, My heart as great, my reason haply more, To bandy word for word and frown for frown; But now I see our lances are but straws, Our strength as weak, our weakness past compare, That seeming to be most which we indeed least are. Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot, And place your hands below your husband’s foot, In token of which duty, if he please My hand is ready, may it do him ease.”  Katherina is saying that she’s  lucky to have Petruchio, she call him her lord, and that her role of the wife was to be obedient and loving. In this quote we learn that Katherina has been tamed. Petruchio managed to ruthlessly take advantage of Katherina and mold her into the “perfect” wife.

During the end of the movie, Eliza ends up coming back to Henry even though he treated her like an object, and like Katherina she became obedient. Eliza had become someone  that society would accept, she had become an aristocrat, just like Henry promised. In the last line of the movie Henry says without turning around: “ Eliza? Where the devil are my slippers?” This last line shows us that Henry’s mindset hasn’t changed.

The ending of both the book and the movie prove that women are still being taken advantage of and are still being tamed to be accepted in society. Although both women were quick with their words, they slowly gave in to ultimately please the people that were trying to “help” them.

Our Names and Our Society

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, November 10, 2014 at 2:49 pm
I redid all of my citations, I also added in new information. I tweaked my thesis a little bit!

Its so hard for people with ethnic names to be hired for a job because our society focuses more on first impression more than the deeper aspects of our humanity. Everyone has a name whether its a “common” name like Sophia or Emily or different like Adonis or Adri. A name is something that is not in our control, so why is it so hard for people with ethnic names to be hired for a job.  Is it because our society focuses more on first impression then the deeper aspect of our humanity.

I believe that for our society to function we need to move forward, but how can we move forward when we get stuck on little things like not hiring someone because of their name. I first heard this job discrimination while I was helping my mom create her lesson plan. At first I blew off the idea, thinking my mom was joking, but its been a question I’ve been dying to figure out to know why. It turns out that this name discrimination is unfortunately true.  “About 40 per cent more likely to choose to interview a job applicant with an English-sounding name than someone with an ethnic name, even if both candidates have identical education, skills and work histories.” (the globe and mail ).

There are no excuses for not hiring someone because of their name. Company owners want their businesses to attracted people into buying their product. Some products talk about the organization on their label or often give a website to go to. If someone was really into this organization they can go off and research more. What if a customer found out that the company wouldn’t higher people with ethnic sounding names. They might want an explanation as to why.   “Foreign sounding names may be overlooked due to a perception that their English language skills may be insufficient on the job.”(The globe and mail)

“When you’re calling someone with an English-sounding name, you know what you’re getting into. You know you can call Bob Smith and can talk to him as quickly as you want to ...”(The globe and mail)

“I personally am guilty of gravitating toward Anglo names on résumés, and I believe that it’s a very human condition – [a result of]resistance to change.”(The globe and mail)

“... It’s difficult to imagine hiring someone with a long first name, as it might be impractical in terms of answering the phone and saying it. People with easy-to-use shorter names are easier to hire and work with.”(The globe and mail)

“I’m down to about seven seconds to vet a résumé ... I do realize how unfair the whole process is.”(The globe and mail) (Theses are explanations as to why hiring people with ethnic name would be bad).  This is not an explanation these are excuses.

“For Larry Whitten, owner of the Whitten Hotel in Taos, N.M., names mattered so much that he ordered a group of Hispanic employees change their names to sound more Anglo Saxon . For example, changing Martin (pronounced Mar-TEEN) to plain-old Martin or Marco to Mark.”  (NBC news) I think that my name is relatively common, but it can be americanized. When people ask me what my name is I will tell them my name is Magdalena and they will say something along the lines of: “oh what a beautiful name” or “I have a friend with that name” (sometimes I will say Maggie). I decide to say Maggie sometimes because it easier to say, and by doing this I’m like one of the bosses who changed his employee name to make them easier to say.  To me my name isn’t that different but to a future employer, or interviewer my name might be too long, or too “hard” to say.  Going to a school that encourages you to be a leader, ask questions and find the out answers I think it would be interesting to create a project where half of the applicants have ethnic names and half don’t. We could then send these out to different companies and see how many calls each person would get back.  I think that this will help further expose the wrong they are doing to theses people.

To conclude a person should not judged on their name, but on the quality of work, because someone with  a different sounding name can excel at a job. Its all about personality and not overlooking people.

Science Fair Project

I wanted to know why bacteria grew in different temperature. I gathered my information by researching my topic on the internet, and I also had a book that I looked through. I was a part of a commntity when I presented with others to scientists, I also got help from my teacher and classmates. My presentation was effective because I got to share my project with many people. I would change the places I swabbed and I would change the temperatures.

Final Portfolio

World History Final Portfolio 2014

Social change happens when a revolution is started.

There have been many different revolutions and many different types. During our world history class we discussed these themes and topic. I found the revolution units especially interesting. "I think revolutions are interesting because they make the world what they are today." A moment in the year that stood out to me was writing in my journal after we looked at and talked about he Past Of Protest. When I was writing in my journal I was thinking about all the different ways and methods people used when fighting for their rights/freedom. I continued to think about how this impacted the world, and what would have happened if people didn't stand up for what they believe in.

One thing that we explored on our own in class was a unit on an organization that created shirts."People have to believe in the product to become hooked on it. " This organization wanted to explain the process behind how the t-shirt was made. This might not seem like a type of revolution but I believe that it is. "Behind the T-shirt is a industry." One thing that is in the world of T-shirts was the collapse of the garment building in Bangladesh. When cracks were discovered on the bottom floors people were told not to go near the building, but the next day the factory workers were ordered to go back and work. The building collapsed during rush hour that morning. 1,129 people were killed. A few day after the building collapsed the factory workers form all around Bangladesh rioted destroying cars and buildings and factories. I believe that the people were right to do that, because there is no excuse what happened. I'm going to assume that they were also upset because they are paid one of the lowest wages  in the world (80 dollars a month/who can support a family on that?) and the condition they work under aren't safe at all. I think that this qualifies as a type of revolution. These people were fighting against something that they thought was wrong and wanted changed. The fighting didn't just stop with destroying buildings and cars. A few days later thousands of people protest in the streets. They were demanding safe working conditions and better wages.

Current events can be understood by people's opinions.

Later in the year our world history class had a discussion on if we thought child labor was acceptable or unacceptable. My perspective on the matter was: "I think child labor is unacceptable in any circumstance." We also had to come up with one question to ask the class. Before posting my response to the question I read what some of my classmates had written. Some people thought it was acceptable where as others thought it unacceptable, But what I noticed was each response was different and I thought that was really cool, because you could literally learn something new from each person, response or question. This goes for all the discussion we've ever in class. The question I posed to the class was: "does having children work in these condition effect them in the long run?"

Revolution Guidebook Project

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in World History - Block - B on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 10:31 pm
In our world history class we have been talking about revolutions. We have compared and contrast them, talked about the different  techniques used during revolutions and we watched different documentries on different revolutions.  We also participated in really cool class dicussion where we talked about the issue going on in these different places. We've focused on egypt,  and we talked a little about Ukraine and Russia. In early classes we acted out the french revolution.
For this project we had to choose a revolution that we found intresting, I chose the velvet revolution. I didn't have one specific question in mind. I choose this revolution because I didn't know anything about it. In my video you will learn a little bit abotu the velvet revolution.

The Supporter

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in World History - Block - B on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 11:18 pm

In our world history class we focused a lot on humans and how we interact with the enviornment. One of the topics we focused a lot on was the XL Pipeline. To understand the pipeline situation more real we looked into both sides, the supporters and the nonsupporters. In order to show we understood this issue we had to create three monologues, with characters on either sides.

Monologue#1

I was walking along the trail of where the XL pipeline would be with the man who’s idea it was to build it. I was interested in working on the pipeline once it was built. Normally I wouldn’t take this job but since the economy isn’t stable and I just lost my job this seemed like a pretty good option to me. As the man talked I zoned out thinking about being employed again,it had seemed like so long.

“Now there are some thing I need to ask and discuss with you before I can allow you to be part of my crew.” he said.

I left my happy space and listened. I was prepared to hear about the side effects of working on the pipeline but surprisingly he asked me simple question like where were you employed before, why did you leave, where do you live, why would you be good for this job. I answered quickly but made sure to make my answers sounded professional.

Monolouge#2

Dear Mother

I appreciate you keeping me updated about the news through your letters. I found one part of your letter especially intriguing the section on the pipeline. All though I disagree with some of your thoughts. I agree that creating jobs would be a plus since dad needs that but what about the environment and people's safety. Say for example the pipe were to break and oil leaked like the Exxon leak, even though they were able to clean up the mess in the process the environment was still damaged not to mention how much money was invested in this act. Now I know what you would say in this instinct who cares at least they got it cleaned up, but not only is the environment  getting harmed its the people around the spill. People who are working to clean it up can be affected in so many ways from an oil spill for example exposure to toxins, cancer later in life, and respiratory problems. So in actuality your point about it creating jobs is wrong, because these side effects could be a turn off causing less people to want to be working on this pipeline. You would have to be really desperate to want to work on something that would expose you to toxins. I can’t wait to see what president Obama decides to do. We’ll talk more when I get out of prison!

Lots of love,

Johnny.

Monolouge#3
I could hear the cars overhead of me as I leaned against the wall to keep out of the rain, with my cup for money and sign when I heard many footsteps rounding the corner. I stuck my head out to look and saw what looked like to be a mob of people shouting and holding sign with red slashes through the words they wrote. The curious  side got the best of me so I decided to ask someone what was going on. He was tall, and thin with a black leather jacket. I found out that this mob of people was in support of something called the XL pipeline, they put slashes on their poster to show they did not support the who supported the pipeline, which to me is confusing. From what the man I pulled over was telling me, this pipeline sounds like a pretty good deal. I mean it could create 20,000 jobs maybe I could change my living situation. I have been homeless for over eight years, I feel as though this is a calling from god. I got up and put my worn down hood on my head preparing to go out into the rain and march with the supporters. I felt alive marching for something I believed in for only two minutes. We rounded the corner now standing in front of the white house, the people were protesting with passion. The police soon showed up, but I continued to protest, when people were starting to get arrested that’s when I started to move away from the crowd a little bit

Element Project

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in Art - Freshman - Hull on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 6:48 pm
In this project we had to incorperate the five values. I believe that research is incorperated in this project, because we had to do research on our elements to be able to know what type of design to make. Collaboration was included in this project, because we had to paint the tiles and this took collaboration, because we all had to work together. Presentation: we didn't stand up and present, but we did present by uploading our element print pictures. This is a reflection, what I'm writing is me reflecting on everything I've done over the process of this project. Inquiry is something we needed for this project.

Negative Space Drawing

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in Art - Freshman - Hull on Monday, May 6, 2013 at 7:35 pm
  A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negitive space is drawing the background, of an object not the actual object.

    B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing?

I found negative space in my cut out when I pasted my turqouise pieces down on bright paper I could really see the negative space. I found negative space in my still life drawing, by shading in between the white space around my object.

   C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artisit to see negative space because the object becomes clearer

    D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

It does enhance drawings because the object becomes more prominant. More frount and center.

MY SLIDE!!

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 5:57 pm

Intro:

In technology we’ve been focusing a lot on media technology and how it influences our culture today. The slide that I’m presenting describes me!! We’ve also been talking about how to catch someones eye using different types of media, like powerpoint or video.

SCRIPT:

I made my slide look the way that it did, because it reflects my personality who I am as a person. The slide is purple, because purple is my favorite color. What influenced the pictures on my slide is the activity’s, and friends I’ve made for most of my life. I also included things that interest me during the winter seasons, thats why I included the picture of a steaming cup of coco. The picture of the green frog represents cut the rope a game I’m fond of. Another item I added was a smily face. I added this, because I’m always happy and feel as though happiness is the key to everything. I added my friends,  because they make my day everyday when I come to school and i love and appreciate what they do for me. This is my slide, this is me.

Reflection:

I took all of my pictures off, and the border, I made my name bigger and arranged my pictures around my name like an arch. I changed my slide, because it to crowded and disorganized.

Clampet-Lundquist Maggie, Lucid chart, Home network

The LNA (Local Area Network)  I use is called Netgearcl. The phone, computers, Wii, and t.v are all hooked up to my network. I learned that each piece of information that you type into the computer  has its own method of transportation to get to you. Its more complicated then I thought. I also learned that information that is not appropriate for school, or for something else a wall that lets information through blocks this bad information which is basically a fire wall. My OMG moment was when i learned that the modem didn't make everything work but it was used to restart the internet, get it up and running. One thing people should know is that you can lock your wireless provider so only you can use it, and others can't.
