Yo no tenía poder.

Mary Altamuro - Second Quarter Art

Posted by Mary Altamuro in Art - Senior Art - Hull on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 10:37 pm
For the second quarter, I started off well, but then started to lack direction. In the beginning of the quarter I steadily worked on my "doodles." They're just an arrangement of swirls that always seem to come from my hand when I'm not paying attention. I decided that it would be a good idea to actually focus on drawing them and make something of them rather than leave them as scratches on the bottoms of homework assignments. I simply used a marker and let my hand go. I really like the way they turned out. To me, they give off a sort of "whimsical" feel. I really enjoy feeling that when I look at my work.

Every year, since I was (believe it or not) one year old, I have been making handmade Christmas gifts for my family. When I was younger, my mom would put together some Christmas-themed craft for me to produce for the masses, but as I've grown older, I've begun to create the projects by myself. This year, I made beaded Christmas tree ornaments. I had two different designs: candles, and a snowman. these were very time-constraining to make, but I enjoyed the meticulous and methodical nature of stringing the beads along repetitively. It was very relaxing and a nice way to prepare for the holidays.

After completing that, I didn't know what to do, but I had some artistic work that had to be done for two of my other classes, so I decided to put all that I could into that. I have always wanted to learn how to use Photoshop. I've developed a basic knowledge over time, but I hope to be able to expand that. This quarter, I worked on removing backgrounds and merging pictures. I've learned a few different ways to do these things, some easy, some more difficult, but all useful in their own way. I am very proud of the progress that I've made with Photoshop and am striving to expand my knowledge even more.

For a few days now, my eyes have strayed to an empty Toblerone box by the windowsill in the classroom. I have always been intrigued by the triangular prism design of the box. I had been contemplating what to do with the box. I wanted to use it for some type of artistic purpose, but I didn't know what. Today, on the last day before the art for this quarter was due, I resolved to use the triangular side of the box as a paint stamp. So, I took a large sheet of paper, painted it yellow, and used the box to stamp blue triangles onto my paper in no particular pattern. I'm not at all fond of the piece, and I actually disposed of the painting on my way out of the classroom, but it was still an enjoyable project to work on, especially because I got to use such an unusual medium.

Mental Disorders.

Posted by Mary Altamuro in Science and Society - Best on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Mary Altamuro

When we think of the mentally handicapped or those with mental disorders, we instantly feel pity.  We usually do not stop to wonder why or how a person came to be stricken with the disability or disorder that afflicts them.   I find myself curious about why these disorders still exist generation after generation even after all the scientific effort at uncovering the causes and possible cures.  A great deal of time and attention has been spent on how these disorders came to exist and what might make them worse and how to make them better, but there is still so much we still need to learn.  Thankfully, scientists have given us a great deal of information that can be very beneficial in understanding, treating and hopefully someday curing or preventing mental and emotional issues.

Recently, studies have shown that a genetic predisposition may be hidden in people that makes them prone to certain characteristics that when provoked, can create emotional or mental conditions.  This predisposition, in conjunction with a triggering event or simply by the quality in that person’s environment and upbringing can cause these characteristics to become problematic and spark a mental or emotional abnormality. This peculiar phenomenon is called the diathesis-stress model.

According to this theory, when provoked, a characteristic may go into overdrive, causing a person to have a legitimately diagnosable illness. Environmental stimuli that may cause such a thing to happen are social issues or trauma that may have occurred at a young age.

One of the most common problems that can cause such a change in people would have to do with their parents. If a young person does not receive the right kind of attention as they are maturing, it can cause emotional and social problems for them later in life.  An overbearing or judgmental parental figure can cause a person to have low self-esteem, which could then inflict disorders such as narcissistic personality disorder, social anxiety disorder or even depression.   Parents who get divorced have also been shown to cause obsessive-compulsive disorder in as children of divorced parents tend to feel they have a loss of control in their lives and obsessive-compulsive disorder is a disorder driven by a person’s overwhelming need and drive for control.

These disorders reveal themselves when people who are predisposed for the characteristics are triggered by an emotional or social stress. This ignites an inner need to balance themselves out, mentally. Sadly, they often emotionally overcompensate; leaving them worse off then they were in the beginning.

Mary Altamuro - Marking Period One

Artist's Statement

I am inspired by details.  Once I have arrived at a concept of what I will create, I am from the outset of the creation of a piece, highly intuned to the precise placement of each element in that piece. Deciding how each color relates to the other, complements the other and bounces off one another is taken into consideration along with the strategic placement of the items. One of my favorite things to do is take an object, pull it out of its element, and give it a new perspective. Then, the purpose of the object is completely different. It may or may not be useful, but it will always evoke some type of emotion.

I like to use natural elements, and shape and twist them into something that they were not intended for. I feel that the piece will emit a more honest vibe, if it was created from something that people may see everyday, but never truly appreciate. With this approach, it is sometimes hard to envision how the final product will turn out, but I don't really mind. I feel that the piece will always turn out to be how it was meant to. I'm just helping it complete its aesthetic purpose. I see myself as an aide in helping people recognize the true potential and beauty in commonplace objects.

The process of creating a piece, rather than the actual final product is what is most important to me. For instance, if painting, I am more likely to slowly and carefully paint each color that butts up against another than paint one color over top of the other. I would much rather go through the process of creating a close detail-oriented piece of work, than just have the overall piece be quick, easy and generally aesthetically pleasing. And although not intended, the result of such close detail work is that when someone looks at a piece, it may seem basic at first, but on closer inspection the details begin to show themselves. Someone would have to really be paying attention, in order to truly appreciate my work.

Bottle Cap Poster

An artist named Aurora Robson has been creating pieces from plastic bottle caps for some time now. We learned about her in class and about why and how she creates these pieces. Most of them are reflective of images from nightmares that she used to have. Not coincidentally, since they are made from plastic bottle caps, (which can not be recycled) they share a common element with her audience, as we all share in the nightmare of how we are destroying the Earth with our nonchalant overuse of plastic. Our class was planning to visit Aurora and her new exhibit, and we wanted to be helpful to her cause. So, for our first project we were to create a poster informing people that the art room would be collecting bottle caps.
