Lotus Shareef-Trudeau Capstone

Posted by Lotus Shareef-Trudeau in Capstone · Pahomov · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 3:37 pm
Captsone: http://lshareef-trudeau.wixsite.com/rejectscapstone

For my senior capstone I resolved to make a collection of clothing/accessories made entirely out of recycled material. I created eleven pieces in all out of various material, from worn out jeans, to plastic tobacco packs. It was really important to me that I do something which I could incorporate sustainability into because it is something that I believe in and am very passionate about. By making new clothing out of material that was old and otherwise unusable, I was able to save a significant amount of material from the dump where these non-decomposable, non-recyclable materials would stay for years upon years polluting the Earth.

I also wanted to find a way to apply the skills that I had learned through my internships in the past school years which were heavy on sewing and designing as well as to improve these newly developing skills in a way that I could feel proud of.This project seemed the perfect balance between the two. I learned a variety of different skills through completing this project. Designing a website, which is the platform I am presenting it on, shoe repair, embroidery, sewing machine repair, the complexities of designing, measuring, fashion sketching, sewing, and even making a mannequin.

Avram, Ioana. “How to do fashion sketches step by step.” YouTube, YouTube, 28

Aug. 2014, www.youtube.com/watch?v=0orqkmOGamk&feature=share.

This video is a tutorial on fashion sketching, by Ioana Avram, a Romanian designer. Avram takes you step by step through the process of drawing fashion figure for your designs. She describes the proportions of the body and the angles and lines of the body to follow. She describes three primary steps to drawing figures. Starting with the axis of the body, drawing stark lines and angles of the body, such as the shoulder line and the hips, you create something like a stick figure. Secondly sketch out the primary shapes within the body, and lastly you connect the shapes together as fluidly as possible. All in all, this tutorial helps to guide you in drawing figures fast, each one doesn’t generally take more than 3 minutes, and efficiently, the figures are ideal to emphasize the subtleties of each design you create.

Learning from this has made my design process a lot faster and easier. Previously I did not have a real method to drawing figures, now I can easily reference my designs and I have an air of consistency to my figures which helps me better understand my designs in relation to one another.

Claudio, Luz. “Waste Couture: Environmental Impact of the Clothing Industry.”

Environmental Health Perspectives, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Sept. 2007, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1964887/.

This source talks about the detriments of “fast fashion.” Fast fashion allows huge quantities of clothing to be produced and sold quickly and at low costs. This type of fashion has repercussions on the environment and leads to inhumane conditions for workers. In China, for example, where 30% of the world’s apparel exports stem from, workers make as little as 12-18 cents per hour. For the majority of the apparel nowadays, just producing the material to needed to construct the clothing creates harmful by-products. Cotton crops account for 25% of all pesticides used in the U.S.

Because of how quickly clothing is produced and sold, it urges consumers to throw out last season’s purchases. One person in America will throw away more than 68 pounds of clothing/textiles per year. Though thrift stores are becoming an increasingly popular way to discard clothing, they make up only 15% of all clothing that is thrown out. This source is very useful in pointing out the flaws in fast fashion and reasons that we are in need of more sustainable & eco-friendly habits within the fashion industry.

This source explains a lot of the “fast fashion” industry’s operations and how that becomes problematic and disregards environmental and human rights issues. The fashion industry is now ruled by fast fashion industries which outsource to other countries in order to employ extremely cheap labor, optimizing their profits. It opens your eyes to how apathetic we are as a country to any crises that don’t directly affect us, the sufferings of people outside of the U.S., the degradation of the environment, etc… Now, there is a surge in the U.S. towards more ethical fashion and a greater demand in consumers for brands that sell and produce conscientiously.

Glamour Magazine, 25 Jan. 2018, 12:25pm, www.glamour.com/gallery/best-looks-couture-fashion-week-spring-2018.

This source is not quite academic or without bias, but for my intents and purposes it doesn’t really need to be. The article compiles a list of fifty popular looks from 2018’s couture fashion week, from some of the most influential designers of today. Studying each of these pieces and other looks from the designers mentioned is a useful way to gather inspiration for my pieces as well as understand what types of designs that people respond positively to. This makes the bias of the article useful to my research. Realistically I won’t be able to match the designs from Fashion Week, but I can try to incorporate some of the main components and/or themes of the pieces that I see.

Csanák, Edit. “Eco-Friendly Concepts and Ethical Movements in the Fashion Industry.”

International Textile, Clothing & Design Conference, 5 Oct. 2014.

There are some limitations in this source, as the author who presented at the conference it was written for is not from an English speaking country, and so, though it is written in English, some of the meaning is convoluted in the writing because of the language barrier which causes the author to write in broken English at times. Despite its limitations, the source introduces the idea of three pillars of a “sustainable fashion retail chain” which is something that can be useful to understand. The pillars are made up of social issues, economic demands, and environmental aspects. In order to create a sustainable fashion retail chain it is essential to find a balance between all three, ensuring that you can produce goods at a relatively inexpensive cost, treat workers fairly, and take environmentally beneficial based action.

Ferrarini, Paolo. “Interview: Sass Brown of "ReFashioned".” Cool Hunting, 9 Oct.

2013, www.coolhunting.com/style/interview-sass-brown-of-refashioned.

This article transcribes an interview held with Sass Brown, the founding dean of the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation and an advisor for the annual Danish sustainable solutions guide, Sustania100. Brown counters the question of whether or not recycling/upcycling would be a contradiction to fashion’s naturally value of obsolescence, by explaining that “creativity thrives on challenge.” She expands on how, challenging oneself to be sustainable in fashion elicits creative responses and that eco-fashion is no less couture than its wasteful counterparts.

I find a lot of truth in her response as I begin my capstone. I’ve felt a lot of enjoyment in upcycling clothes not only because of the environmental implications but also because it poses a challenge and stretches my creativity because I have to work with what I have, mistakes have to be embraced and run with because I don’t have an endless supply of material. I have one chance, one thing, each piece is unique and near impossible to replicate, which lends each piece a valuableness that it would not otherwise possess.

Gerval, Olivier. Fashion: Concept to Catwalk. Firefly Books, 2010.

Gerval’s Concept to Catwalk laid out everything that a designer needs to know to create a clothing collection. He starts from the very beginning of the design process, mapping out how to choose color palettes and fabric type, touches on the conceptualization of each piece, producing them, creating a portfolio, and finally showcasing your collection. Reading this has given me a lot of helpful hints to keep in mind while designing my collection. It has also given me a lot of good ideas for how I want to present the final product because I hadn’t had a solid plan for that aspect of the project. Now I am excited about the possibilities of what I can do to display it. I’m considering doing a photoshoot with each piece and recruiting models, which could be a time consuming process. I am also very taken with the idea of creating a portfolio of all my designs, making it all follow a sort of theme, concept mapping and the such.

Prime, Richard. “Restructional Clothing by Ninna Berger.” Cool Hunting, 28 Oct.

Ninna Berger is an avant garde, Swedish designer. Berger founded Recontructional Clothing, a collection of clothing which uses 100% reused materials and doesn’t allow any material to go to waste. This source was able to provide a lot of examples of the different possibilities that upcycling holds as the project Berger undertook was very similar to what I am attempting in my capstone. It has also abolished the idea that upcycled clothing’s greatest potential is to look like a 4th grade arts and crafts project in its finished state. If nothing else, learning about Reconstructional Clothing and looking at the results of the project has helped to boost my morale and reinforce my hope for the quality of the products that I create.

Sims, Alexanda. “How the fashion industry is helping the world's rubbish problem.”

The Independent, Independent Digital News and Media, 27 May 2016, www.independent.co.uk/life-style/fashion/how-the-fashion-industry-is-helping-the-worlds-rubbish-problem-a7052826.html.

This article talks about how designers have turned to more ecological materials to create their fashion. One popular and effective method of no-waste fashion production mentioned is chemical recycling. Chemical recycling involves  melting old material down to extract the raw material. Using this method, old clothing can be made into a new garment to be recycled again and again. The article points out that each year, 350,000 tons of used clothing in the UK goes to the landfill. In the U.S., this number is a whopping 16 million tons as of 2014. The UK is making great strides in integrating sustainability with fashion, and the sheer mass of waste that the U.S. produces in textiles, shows how beneficial sustainable fashion could be in America.

My capstone is a response to the question of how I can personally reduce the waste I create, beyond simply recycling. This source has opened my eyes to how much of a detriment the fashion industry can be to the environment and some of the ways to combat that. After learning this, I knew that I wanted to emulate designers such as Christopher Raeburn and Cyndi Rhoades. Though I do not have access to the technology to employ chemical recycling, my end goal is to create several pieces of clothing out of old and worn out clothing and materials, which will allow me to create environmentally conscious clothing and minimize my carbon footprint, although it will be on a much smaller and more personal scale than the design.

Wyszynski, Linda. The complete photo guide to needlework. Creative Pub. International,

2012.

In The Complete Photo Guide to Needlework, Wyszynski includes descriptions of different tools and materials essential to needlework which was extremely helpful for me so that I knew exactly what would be the best type of thread, needle, etc… when embroidering. This book gave me a lot of different techniques to use when embroidering, beading, and the like. It was especially useful when I was working on the shoes that I repaired because I was using so much embroidery, and in such a vast range of techniques, on them. I thought this source very effective to use because it had ready pictures and steps so that I could easily follow along and copy the steps in order to finish the pair of converse.

Q3 Artist Statement: Lotus Shareef-Trudeau

Posted by Lotus Shareef-Trudeau in Senior Art · Hull · A Band on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 10:25 am
This quarter focused on using fragments to create larger pieces. Starting with a metamorphosis drawing, we created six different images that, in series, showed a transformation from one object to a different one. Afterwards we each created a collage that followed the Golden Ratio, again, using different pieces in unison which create a more meaningful piece of artwork. Next we worked on mosaics, which really is the epitome of this theme. Even the coat of arms could be considered a piece which uses different images, which collectively represent your family. Lastly, for my choice piece, I decided to stick with the theme of the quarter and make another collage. Working with these pieces has pushed me to consider things as the pieces that make them up, whether that's an image, a table, etc... I have become more attuned to what must be brought together in a perfect harmony in order to make something.

Q2 Art: Lotus Shareef-Trudeau

This collection focused mostly on using colored pencils as a medium for my pieces. Colored pencil drawings were fairly new to me, as I had not previously known any of the techniques that we have learned to utilize the pencils. This entire quarter has been a learning experience and a growing opportunity for me. I realized that I like working with the primary colors and blending them to make secondary and tertiary colors, rather than using, for example, a green pencil, because it gives me a lot more room to create different shades and hues for my drawings, as well as play with the light. Though I still could use a lot of practice in with colored pencils, I am very excited to be able to add some new skills to my tool bag.

Q1 - Art Portfolio

Posted by Lotus Shareef-Trudeau in Senior Art · Hull · A Band on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 10:56 am
This quarter I wanted to focus on my shadows, and trying to shade in a way that will give my artwork a more realistic feel. For my ceiling tile I wanted to experiment with painting skin tones and playing with light. The fall wall hanging was a collage that was created out of mixed media. I used paint, markers, and colored pencil to make it, and in the same vein as the last, tried to figure out how to add undertones to skin with the painting and turned out making it very emphasized and exaggerated. For the charcoal portrait, I worked a lot on shadows and trying to understand how to manipulate charcoal on the page. Because I spent most of my time playing with shadows I didn’t have the time to make the features look extremely similar to my own so the portrait did not turn out to be a perfect rendition of my own. Lastly, the watercolor fruit bowl was more playing with the colors and experimenting with the paint.

English 3

Ms. Pahomov

In every language, one can find swear words that are a crucial part of the culture. People often use swear words at times of emotional peaks, when they’re stressed or extremely happy. Though many are taught that the use of curse words makes someone a bad person. Often when someone swears excessively it gives others a negative impression of their character, but the truth is curse words are extremely important to mental health. Swear words are essential to human expression because it is an immediate emotional release.

As people grow older, things like crying to let a build up of emotions out becomes less and less acceptable. Crying when angry, or frustrated, sad, even when overly happy, as an adult is frowned upon not only in America but in many other countries around the world as well, it is considered weak and childish. But people do need some kind of emotional release, and if it isn’t crying, it’s swearing. Most children are taught at an early age not to swear, that it is something bad. This gives people the ability to make a more powerful statement by breaking “the rules” demonstrating that they feel so much that they no longer care to stay within the confines of social etiquette. Geoff Nunberg, a linguist at the UC Berkeley School of Information and the leading linguist contributor on NPR’s Fresh Air, wrote an article about swearing and stated that, “Swear words don't describe your feelings; they manifest them.” He says that, “the basic point of swearing is to demonstrate that your emotions have gotten the better of you and trumped your inhibitions.” By the way Nunberg describes it, swearing is a release of emotions, it acts as a valve to let off the pressure of feelings, that otherwise might build up and be a hit to one’s emotional well being.

In the human brain, curse words have a special place. They are not processed in the usual section of the brain that any other words are, the anterior speech area, or Broca’s area, instead they are sent to the limbic system, “a collection of deep brain regions which are responsible for processing emotions, certain automatic drives and habits, and even aspects of learning.” An article on Northwestern University’s science magazine, Helix, talks about where in the brain curse words are processed and what that says about them. “Swearing has an undeniable emotional component – some scientists argue that swearing is more about expressing an emotional state than articulating an actual linguistic idea. In the same vein, cursing is also considered a kind of automatic speech, as it is often used to fill space between thoughts or ideas.“ Cursing is more a communication of emotion than of ideas. This is evident in the fact that, unlike any other words, swear words live in the same parts of the brain as one’s emotions. Though people are taught to use them scarcely, restricting swearing entirely would be like telling people that they can’t feel frustration, or anger, it is impossible and unhealthy. People will always gravitate towards using words that are taboo in their culture to let off pressure because it helps them to deal with overloads of emotion.

Though curse words get a bad rap, they are necessary. They have always existed and are not going away anytime soon. They relay emotion when used and can convey the serious of a situation or show how much passion a person feels for something. The fact that curse words are considered unacceptable, provides the possibility for them to be used cathartically. If there were not the invisible “rules” put in place in societies against swearing it would not be as powerful when someone broke those rules and therefore it would no longer be as effective a tool to release those built up emotions. Not only is cursing necessary but the reinforced knowledge that one is not "supposed" to curse is also necessary in a society for people to maintain their emotional health.

Why this is my best possible 2fer:

In the past I have struggled to make my essay theses debateable. On many occasions they have read more like a research paper than a persuasive essay. This 2fer in particular is better than my previous 2fers because the point I am arguing is more subjective and therefore more debateable, which makes for a better and more interesting essay.

The Deception of the Shrew

Posted by Lotus Shareef-Trudeau in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 11:21 pm

Deception of the Shrew

Comparing “The Taming of the Shrew” to “Man Up”

"The Taming of the Shrew" is a play about a man who tames Katherine, the most harsh, outspoken woman, into a mild, obedient wife. Man Up is a movie about a woman, Nancy, who pretends to be a man's, Jack, blind date.

In both the play, “The Taming of the Shrew, ” and the movie, “Man Up,” there is a common theme of changing oneself in a relationship. In “The Taming of the Shrew” both Katherine and Lucentio go through drastic changes for their relationships. Lucentio takes a more superficial approach to this, disguising himself as a school teacher to get closer to Bianca, whom he has fallen in love with. Katherine’s transformation is much more thorough than that of Lucentio’s. She trades in her fighting and rebellious spirit for that of someone much more docile and submissive, becoming who Petruchio, her husband, wanted her to be. In “Man Up” the main character, Nancy, emanates both of Katherine and Lucentio, disguising herself as someone she is not as well as undergoing a change within.

Unlike Lucentio, Nancy does not disguise herself as someone that is of a lower class. instead her disguise made her a better prospect, in her love interest, Jack’s, eyes, than she normally would be. This meant that when her true self was revealed it was a disappointment to her love interest. Though both characters disguise themselves in order to pursue their romantic interest, in Nancy’s dawning on what would be appealing characteristics in her disguise her reveal makes her seem pathetic and untrustworthy. Lucentio, on the other hand, disguises himself as someone that has less prospects than he does normally, which made his reveal a much more positive thing, as it was a good surprise that he had money and power and land, in the end he comes out seeming like a good guy. Nancy also resembles Katherine in that they both change themselves for their love interest. The difference between the two is that throughout the entirety of “Taming of the Shrew” people are fighting to make Katharine into who they want her to be and in the end they succeed. In the movie, “Man Up,” Nancy has to shed the mask she has put up to make other’s happy and learn to just become herself, instead of someone else. These texts show that in relationships people feel the need to change themselves for their partner, but human’s outlook on this “deception” has changed overtime, once not only acceptable, but appealing in a partner, now looked down upon as two faced and insufficient.

Act I Scene I (62-66)

KATHARINA

“I'faith, sir, you shall never need to fear: I wis it is not halfway to her heart; But if it were, doubt not her care should be to comb your noddle with a three-legg'd stool and paint your face and use you like a fool.”

In this quote Katherine is speaking to Hortensio who had just told her that she would find no one unless she was kinder, and milder. She responds with a sharp remark, telling him that she would hit him in the head with a stool. This quote shows Katherine’s strong will in the beginning of the book and her attitude towards the idea of changing for a man.

This attitude that Katherine holds is the same that our main character in “Man Up,” Nancy, has towards people generally suggesting she change herself in order to find a relationship.

Train Scene

Screenshot 2017-04-19 at 6.48.16 PM.png

Jessica

I think it’s exactly what you need

Nancy

Why is everyone always telling me what I need?

Jessica

Perhaps if they’re always telling you, you should listen.

Nancy

I think you need to shhh.

In this scene Nancy meets a woman on a train that tries to tell her that she should read a self-help book after overhearing Nancy’s phone conversation with her sister where she describes the terrible date that she had the other night. This scene shows how Nancy’s character in Man Up is like Katherine. She is abrasive and unpleasant to be around. People are constantly trying to butt into Nancy’s romantic life, telling her that she needs to be different than she is, much like Katherine in Taming of the Shrew. Nancy goes through the Katherine transformation early in the movie, deciding to change herself to please someone else, using Lucentio’s method of pretending to be someone that she is not. Throughout the rest of the movie the audience is watching her shed that disguise she had initially put on and how her love interest has to come to terms with who she really is, and how he, in fact, comes to fall in love with her true self instead of the front she had put on. This is a large contrast between the movie and the play where the entirety of the Taming of the Shrew revolved around changing Katherine’s character to be more desireable, Man Up focused on forcing other people to accept Nancy as she is, instead of having her change. This shows how, in our modern day, we believe that love comes only with honesty and the acceptance of a partner’s flaws, as opposed to attempting to erase all flaws that one may dislike about their relationship, that was more acceptable the 400 years ago that Taming of the Shrew was written.

Act 1, Scene 1 (210-215)

LUCENTIO

“I will some other be, some Florentine, some Neapolitan, or meaner man of Pisa. 'Tis hatch'd and shall be so: Tranio, at once uncase thee; take my colour'd hat and cloak: When Biondello comes, he waits on thee; but I will charm him first to keep his tongue.”

On seeing Bianca, Lucentio falls in love with her. After hearing of the conditions that Baptista has put his daughter under, making it so that Bianca could not be wed until her sister, Katherine, is married off, Lucentio makes a plan. He decides to disguise himself as a schoolmaster who would teach her in order to get close to her, because he was not allowed to court her.

This is the same approach that Nancy takes on meeting Jack. Because he already has a date, she is not supposed to “court him,” so instead she pretends to be his date in order to get to know him better.

Station Scene

Screenshot 2017-04-19 at 7.12.09 PM.png

Jack

Usually when in this situation, I would say something and then you’d say something back. And then we’d talk a little about what we’re gonna do and exchange ideas. You know, sort of, “Quid pro quo, Clarice.”

In the beginning of the movie we hear this same phrase when Nancy decides to stay in her hotel room instead of attend the wedding party because she is nervous about meeting the man that her friends have set her up with, and instead stays in her hotel room to watch her favorite movie, Silence of the Lambs.

Up until this point, when Nancy met Jack and was mistaken for Jessica she made a few feeble attempts at explaining that he had the wrong girl, but Jack kept talking over her and cutting her off without listening to her, which is somewhat similar to Katherine’s protests against her marriage to Petruchio. When Petruchio told Baptista of Katherine’s feelings towards him, Katherine did protest somewhat, but Petruchio would cut her off and override what she was saying with his explanation of how much affection she felt for him in private and how they were to be married.

After Jack references Nancy’s favorite movie though, Nancy stops protesting altogether and pretends to be Jessica. As soon as she found Jack worth pursuing, she was willing to lie to get him. This behavior makes her much like Lucentio, as he saw Bianca from afar for only a short time, fell in love with her, then decided to dawn a disguise in order to get closer to her. This is, essentially, the same thing that Nancy does with Jack.

Jack

As the book says, ”what are you waiting for?”

Nancy

I am waiting… for you.

Act I, Scene I (232-241)

LUCENTIO

“Sirrah, come hither. ‘Tis no time to jest, and therefore frame your manners to the time. Your fellow, Tranio here, to save my life, puts my apparel and my count’nance on, and I for my escape have put on his; for in a quarrel since I came ashore I killed a man and fear I was descried. Wait you on him, I charge you, as becomes, while I make way from hence to save my life. You understand me?”

In the previous quote, Lucentio was talking to Tranio about his intent to “charm” Biondello, his other servant. In this quote we see Lucentio in action. He lies to Biondello, telling him that he must disguise himself because his life is in danger so that Biondello will keep his identity hidden. In order to keep his deception going, he needs to employ other people to help him, getting his servants in on the plan as well.

Nancy must also get other people to play along with her deception, but she is less cunning than Lucentio and, instead of lying, she has to make a deal with him so that he will keep her secret.

Bowling Alley

Screenshot 2017-04-19 at 7.28.00 PM.png

Nancy

Hey, Sean, I’m out bowling with a man, a man who might actually have some potential and not in just that he’s a really good bowler type way. Do you know--hey--so don’t ruin it for me. All right? Just be cool.

Sean

Okay, I will.

Nancy

Yeah?

Sean

Uh-huh. If you give me a blow job

Nancy

You what?

Sean

Take it or leave it.

Once Nancy begins lying to Jack, it gets more and more elaborate and she needs to employ other people to help her keep up appearances. When Jack and Nancy go bowling together, Nancy runs into an old classmate of hers, Sean. To stop him from revealing her identity she has to make a deal with him, promising in the end to give him a kiss. This relates to the way that Lucentio had to include other people into his plan so that he would not be revealed when under cover. Because Nancy is not as well thought out as Lucentio, this deal she makes with Sean ultimately leads to her untimely discovery in a bathroom stall where Jack walks in on them about to kiss. In both Nancy and Lucentio’s situations, they find that they have to do more and more to keep up their appearances, but in Nancy’s case, the more elaborate the lie gets, the deeper a hole she seems to be digging for herself. This is because people today have a more negative outlook on lying to win someone’s heart, because we value honesty more than what might have been thought of as a “romantic gesture” in “The Taming of the Shrew”.

Act 5, Scene I (124-128)

BAPTISTA

“Now fair befall thee, good Petruchio! The wager thou hast won, and I will add unto their losses twenty thousand crowns, another dowry to another daughter, for she is changed as she had never been.”

In this quote Baptista, Katherine’s father, is praising Petruchio for taming Katherine. He sees this change as positive, where as now, society views the docile submissive woman as a negative attribute and a change for the worst.

Bowling Alley (Katherine)

Screenshot 2017-04-23 at 8.07.37 PM.png

Sean

It would appear that I finally have you under a barrel, Nancy Paterson. Indeed you are clearly not the girl you used to be once. Cool and confidant. Now…stealing other women’s dates from under clocks.

When Sean finds out what Nancy is doing he notices how much Nancy has changed. Nancy used to be a girl who was confidant, who said what she wanted and didn’t care about what others thought, much like Katherine in the beginning of the play. Upon meeting her again, Sean sees that she has changed from that once “cool and confident” girl and into someone who feels the need to sacrifice who she really is to win the heart of men. Sean feels superior to her because this act is seen as weak and pathetic nowadays, where it was simply expected of a wife in the play.

These portrayals show us that being deceitful in a relationship today is more frowned upon than it once was. In the play, “Taming of the Shrew,” love for a spouse or a prospective spouse could be proven by the lengths one would go to for them. Something such as lying is romantic, something such as obeying your husband is desireable. Nowadays women fight to end these social expectations put upon the female gender. Because of today’s climate towards strict gender roles, the kind of change that Katherine underwent in “Taming of the Shrew” is now something that society would think outdated and distasteful. Nowadays, disguising oneself to win the heart of a romantic interest is not seen as sweet but deceitful, as showing one’s “true” self is more valued than it once was.

“What’s in a Name?”

Everyday a plethora of sounds pass people by: the beep of car horns, the explosion of a sneeze, and of course, the language spoken between humans . The sounds of words play a huge part in the daily lives of humans, yet many don’t think much of it. In conversation, there is a whole lot that goes into the words people choose to use, even if this process is subconscious. This is because different words convey different meanings, even if they are synonyms. This is in part because of their sound, it’s the difference between using a slit and a slot--different sounds are associated with different meanings. Although languages can be quite different, the same sounds are internationally recognized as symbolic for similar meanings. As a result,  changing the sound of these words would alter the symbols that people associate with the words.

A popular line from Shakespeare’s famous, Romeo and Juliet states, “What's in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet; so Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd, retain that dear perfection which he owes without that title.” This line sounds sweet, but what Juliet claims may not be entirely true. Certainly the name of a rose is not what gives it its shape, or color, or sweet aroma but the sound of a word does do something to alter the perception of an object, if only in small amounts. Nico Lang, a former blogger for radio station WBEZ, makes a point of saying that, “The linguistic formula for a disgusting word is to make sure it contains phonetically abrasive letters like ‘b,’ ‘g,’ ‘m,’ ‘u’ and ‘o,’ which you’ll find to be common among the most hated.” This part of his argument goes to prove my point, though he then goes on to say that, “It’s not just the word, but what it represents to us. When we hear ‘vomit,’ we think not just of its unflattering construction but the very image it signifies.” and that, “our revulsions come socio-culturally loaded.” The second part of his argument is not incorrect. Yes, it’s true, the most hated words in the English language display similar characteristics, in that most of them are associated with unpleasant things, but that is not enough. Not all words associated with terrible meanings are so hated, half of reason for the hatred that boils to the surface of people’s feelings after hearing certain words is the sound of the words themselves. Many of the words that are held in such contempt are abrasive sounding and tend to linger in one’s mouth after saying them. After looking at several different lists of the most hated words in the English language, one will find that this statement is true for the majority of unfavorable words. If a rose, instead was named something like a “worpuss” or “gratak” it would seem much less appealing, at least at first, one would, on instinct be semi-repulsed by it, even without any knowledge of the definition. This is because of the sounds are harsh and associated with unkind things in the world, for example the long “s” sound in “worpuss” reminds us of words like “fester,” and “moist.” The sound that both “g” and “k” make are aggressive and in the word “gratak” the combination of the two provides no relief from the onslaught of harsh sounds.

Some words are so beautiful they could be played on repeat forever and no one would ever tire of them. Others are cringe worthy and will grate against ears whenever spoken. What determines whether they are in the category of music to the ears or nails against chalkboard widely has to do with sounds that are easier and more delicate on the ears being associated with beauty and goodness. David Crystal’s article, The Ugliest Words that appeared in The Guardian, a British national daily newspaper, states that, “Words with soft sounds such as 'l,' 'm,' and 'n,' and long vowels or diphthongs, reinforced by a gentle polysyllabic rhythm, are interpreted as 'nicer' than words with hard sounds such as 'g' and 'k,' short vowels and an abrupt rhythm." Though this may not be true for all people, because it is true that in some cases beauty is subjective, the majority will agree that when words sound softer they are more attractive or nicer.

It’s not a stretch to say that if people associate sounds with nice vs. mean, they associate them with many other things as well. Such is the argument of Dr. Richard Nordquist, an English and rhetoric emeritus professor of Armstrong Atlantic State University. He wrote an article stating that, “Sound symbolism is often a result of secondary association.” For example, words that begin with gl- convey an idea of a sheen, smoothness, or brightness, words like glory, glee, glimmer, glib, even glance and glimpse because sight is so closely tied to light. This is not the only case where this happens. Then there is the point where some words just sound smaller than others, like dints and dents, which were originally just different pronunciations of the same words, but when said aloud, instinctively one would think that a dint is smaller than a dent, it just sounds smaller. This is not only true for English, A study done by Berkeley professor John J. Ohala  shows that many other languages share these same sound associations, sounds with “High front vowels like [i I y e], [-grave] consonants, voiceless consonants, high tone etc.,” are often associated with “small” and “low back vowels like [A √ ç o], [+grave] consonants, voiced consonants, and low tone.” are often associated with “large.” This goes to say that, sound can have a lot more power in affecting perception than people may give it credit for and changing even the pronunciation of a word such as dent, can alter how it is seen, even if that alteration is only a dint.

When asked, people might say that the small attributes of language do not concern them. But on closer inspection, understanding what they are can lead to an easier pathway to worldwide communication. Though people do not yet all speak an international language, realizing that across all languages there are similarities that one can spot through the sound of those languages it can make communication across cultures much easier. When people are able to communicate ideas with each other, amazing things can happen, larger advancements in science, mathematics, art, and basic empathy and understanding are within grasp.

Reader Profile: Ella

Ella’s reading happy place includes school, the bus, or a bench somewhere, as home has many distractions, and any distractions will give her a hard time when reading, this also goes for any place too loud or eventful.

Ella really enjoyed reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, in Mr. Kay’s English class last year, she had read it previously already, but like the chance to delve further into it in class. In contrast she did not at all like reading Lord of the Flies in class, she found it boring and dragged out, it was not a good time, in fact, she might go as far as saying it was a bad time. She has similar feelings about her current independent reading book, Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler, because it has little to no plot and is a bit of a mess. Though she has been meaning to change it, she hasn’t gotten around to it yet and so, for the meantime, is stuck with it. Instead, she says it would be cool to explore more books in the horror and sci-fi genres. Be sure to wish her good luck on her book hunt!

Wk 1

For the first piece of art that we had to complete we went to the Rodin museum to draw some inspiration from there. While there I chose to sketch a street lamp that I saw. Though it was daylight, I decided to draw the lamp as if it was dark outside. I tried to portray it as if it was emitting light, to do this I drew moths fluttering around it and attempted at creating shadows.

Wk 2 & 3

The second piece of art that I made was a collage. I took a canvas and painted it a solid orange color. I then cut out a few interesting pictures from magazines that I had and an old picture from home and glued them down to the canvas. After that I recycled some snapple bottle caps that were lying around my room and a broken artificial flower and glued them to the canvas as well. Lastly I draped a string of beads onto the collage using thumbtacks. I really enjoyed making this collage because I found a way to turn a lot of the stray, sort of useless objects all about my room, into something I like to look and and can hang on my wall.

For the third piece of artwork that I made I did another collage on a canvas. The first thing I did was paint it, this time it was not a solid coat but had more variation, I used blue and black paint. I went through much of the same process with this collage as with the last, looking through magazines for pictures that caught my eye and browsing through old photos that would work with the feel I was going for. I used duct tape for the picture and watered down glue to paint onto the backs of my magazine images so that it would produce a more thin and even coat. Lastly for an extra touch I used markers to create a few designs on the canvas and on the images and I cut out clouds to stick onto the image of the man by the train tracks.

Wk 4 & 5

The next piece I made was a painting of a nebula. I used watercolors because they do a good job of expanding on the page in a way that looks natural as opposed to the deliberate strokes of a paint brush that would come out using another type of paint. I restricted my mini nebula to a circle shape so that it is more compact and it looks like its own mini universe contained inside a small space.

After that I used colored pencil to color draw a picture of an alien. It is based off of a picture of my little sister.

The next drawing is based off of a picture that I saw. I really liked the picture because the stripes on her cheek show that she’s a warrior even though it may not look it. I used chalk pastels to color her in.

I based another drawing off of a picture of Jennifer Lawrence. Again I used chalk pastels to color. I used mostly muted colors save for the blue of her eyes because I wanted them to pop more.

Wk 6 & 7

In the 6th and 7th weeks I got really into drawing butterflies. I filled up this page with various drawings of butterflies that I drew throughout the weeks. They’re really beautiful creatures and I tried to capture how delicate they are by applying less pressure to the page when drawing creating a fainter, more subtle line than I normally would.

This next drawing is a depiction of a girl hiding her feelings behind a veil of material things, wearing a mask of indifference. At a time when I was feeling somewhat down on life I began to doodle in my notebook. I tried to channel my feeling through drawing and ended up personifying the feelings that I had at the time. This picture was created with pen.

I drew a picture of a man in a spacesuit and behind him were planets and other planetary objects. I used a combination of pens, markers, and pencils to complete this drawing. I think that space is a beautiful thing and this drawing reflects my desire to learn more about the mysteries of the universe.

Qtr 3 Art Gallery - Shareef-Trudeau

Posted by Lotus Shareef-Trudeau in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at 8:14 pm

The first piece that I created for quarter three was an advanced coloring sheet. This is a detailed coloring sheet that I colored in with the use of markers. The image I chose to color was a fox, created by by several plant parts. I tried to keep the colors sort of realistic, coloring leaves green and wheat a golden color.

The second piece that I created was a self-portrait in watercolor. Because I had previously completed a self-portrait in pencil that was as realistic as I could make it, I wanted to try something a little different this time. Watercolor is more of a transparent and fluid paint to work with and so I thought that this medium would work well in conveying light and heat. So when painting my self-portrait I used warm colors and focused more on the thermal aspect of the portrait rather than the realistic colors that you would see on my face.

The third piece that I drew was a vase. The round shape of the vase helped me to emphasize value in this drawing, because of how the light strikes circular objects. Beside the vase is a gradient scale, this was simply a practice at shading in different gradients.

The fourth piece that I created was a drawing of a hand. I made this by starting with basic shapes and using those to construct the general idea of the hand, this is displayed in the picture on the left. After I drew the basic shapes, I refined the drawing by rounding edges and connecting them in a more natural way, this is displayed in the picture on the right.

The fifth and final piece of this quarter that I created was a gazelle. Again I started this piece using basic shapes for the gazelle’s features and later smoothing them out and making the picture a little less rigid and more curved, as we often find things in nature. Still, I left the light outline marking on the picture to show how I got from a place of blocks and circles and triangles, to the finished picture.

Since last checking in about my time at the library I have spent my time in the teen center continuing my work of creating book tags. Occasionally I will participate in "book face Friday" which is a hashtag put on the libraries social media accounts featuring a book every Friday. Everything has been going very smoothly and I have come to enjoy my time interning there. I am looking forward to bettering my relationship with the library staff and opening up more opportunities for myself there.

In my ILP at the Parkway Central Library I've begun creating tags for the books which I have enjoyed. It is a nice change from the video reviews that I had been doing every week. I look forward to working with the actual books and learning some of the inner working of the library. So far I have done many video reviews, created book tags, and taken photos to put on the library's social media accounts.

Quarter 2 - Artist's Statement

Posted by Lotus Shareef-Trudeau in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 9:21 am

The first piece that I created was a collage. When making my collage I went for a sort of surrealist feel. I experimented with shifting the focus, I wanted the woman to be the first thing that your eye was drawn to so I painted over almost everything else in the collage with pink acrylic paint so that it was a little less clear and didn’t pop out as much as the woman did.

The next piece that I drew was of the top of my bed from my perspective where I was sitting at the bottom of the bed. I was focusing mainly on the blankets on the bed and how the fabric laid and wrinkled and casted shadows.

Pieces three and four are photos playing with depth of field. I focused my camera on the trees that are taking up most of the pictures so that everything that was not the tree was unfocused. I put filters on the photos, so that one is black and white and kinda has a parchment paper feel. The filter I put on the second photo intensifies all of the colors so that the darks seem to cast a shadow over the photo, while the lights almost bleach it out.

The fifth and final piece that I made was an illustration of a poem I really enjoy. In my illustration of the poem I depicted the silhouette of a man with a nebula inside of him using watercolors. I tried to convey the feeling that we each have a universe of emotion inside of us because that is the sort of feeling that I got when reading the poem.

Quarter 1 Artwork

Posted by Lotus Shareef-Trudeau in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 6:19 pm

In the first slide the character 2D from the music group Gorillaz has been recreated on a ceiling tile. The character is mostly silhouette except a few pieces of him which are cartoonish. The hardest part of this piece was blending the different shades of blue to make a gradient effect.

The second slide is a drawing of a woman drawn in pencil with color starting from a focal point and spreading over her face. I based the woman's face off of a picture that I found online, then I added in splashes of color using colored pencils.

In the third piece I used construction and tissue paper to make origami pumpkins. To emphasize that the pumpkins were in fact meant to be pumpkins I cut out a pumpkin shape on the surface of the origami pumpkins. When making the bats I cut out their silhouettes using black construction paper and hung them up with string to make it look as if they were really flying.

On the fourth slide is a self portrait. I made it very simple drawing very little detail. I wanted to get a very stripped down version of my face, devoid of details.

At the central library I am going to be doing video reviews with Hannah Dunakin on different music, movies and books which will be posted on the libraries social media accounts. So far we have been making good progress, though we haven't yet completed a video. So far we have mostly been planning and writing a script and readying our materials. I'm looking forward to using the libraries green screen, I think that should be fun.

Reconstruction Era Visuals Projects

Final.jpg

The Reconstruction Era was the period of time after the Civil War it was a time of recovery and transformation in America. During the Reconstruction former slaves gained several rights and were on their way to becoming equal with the dominant white race. With the rise of black empowerment came the rise of many hate groups. Groups like the  Klu Klux Klan and the White League. Groups that spread used violence and intimidation to get what they wanted. These Hate groups terrorized cities with ravaging fires. Harming people of color and any of their supporters. Reconstruction ended with the assassination of Lincoln, and the people of colors lost most of the rights that they had only just been granted and were forced to regain them through years and years of civil rights movements, but many of the hate groups still survive today and even saying the names of them has become a kind of taboo. My map is meaningful to the study of the Reconstruction era because there were so many attacks on innocent people and my map is an easy way to see just how many reports of violence there were in the years of reconstruction. One thing that may not be very clear at first glance is that each of the flags on the map is a reported attack or the formation of a new group. Another thing about my map is that not every point on the map is super accurate, espescially since they cover a larger amount of space, so that is one thing you might want to keep in mind.

In the final drawing I completed the ceiling tiles and the outline of the room. I drew two of the tables in the room and started on the blinds. I drew the cabinets on the side wall and some of the columns. If I could do this project again I would pace myself better and focus less on specific details and more on the whole picture. I think Sydnye's drawing is very successful because she has a complete picture and it follows the rules of a one point perspective drawing. I learned that in a one point perspective drawing all the lines are horizontal, vertical, or orthogonal.

SLA Promo - Lotus, Kate, Xavier, Wesley

Posted by Lotus Shareef-Trudeau in Spanish 1 - Manuel - B on Monday, February 9, 2015 at 9:26 am

Posted by Lotus Shareef-Trudeau in Spanish 1 - Manuel - B on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 8:59 am

Net Neutrality

Posted by Lotus Shareef-Trudeau in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - y2 on Sunday, December 21, 2014 at 12:45 pm
Net neutrality is important for teens to know about because the decisions made on this topic affects them tremendously. The Federal Communications Commission is debating the laws that apply to internet service providers and the limits that are put on them. Depending on the actions taken by the FCC we will either have a free and open internet or an internet ruled by our internet service providers. Teenagers are soon going to be the people in charge of making these decisions for the public, so it is important that we learn about these things now. Teenagers are always using technology and are constantly online and using the internet so it only makes sense that we are informed about what is going on with these topics.

Net neutrality is the idea that your internet, cellular, and television providers should treat all data the same. This means that an internet user is able to use any kind of application, service, content, or equipment without interference from an ISP. Big telecommunication providers and ISPs want to get rid of net neutrality, saying that it is neither practical nor desirable. In my opinion it is important that we protect net neutrality, otherwise our internet will turn into a dictatorship, with ISPs ruling over everything. The only people who would benefit from an internet without net neutrality is internet service providers. They could up their prices and charge both the consumers and the companies that own sites.

So what I'm trying to get at is that net neutrality is important for everyone to know about, even teens. And if you have an opportunity to learn about net neutrality, take it. Because the choices that are made concerning this topic will affect everyone of all ages.

Updated Tech Slide
In my updated slide I tried to follow a lot of the suggestions that I received. I had a lot of feedback about fixing the edges on my image, getting rid of the excess black bordering the picture, so I cut it down a bit, so that those spots were no longer as disturbing. I positioned the image up a little higher like was suggested. I also increased the text size some and made the red text a little darker to better match the red in the picture. I visited http://www.slideshare.net/edahn/10-tips-for-making-beautiful-slideshow-presentations-9210564 as an extra resource in creating my slide.

Slide Design

Tech Slide
I found a picture with a stack of books and made it big so that it would catch your eye but no so much so that it would take up the entire slide. I positioned the stack so that it bled a little of the slide. For the words I noticed that the picture already kind of had a color scheme and used the colors in the picture for my font. I used the same size font and color for the first two lines of text but I wanted the last line to stand out so I increased the font size and changed the color. I made the background a kind of neutral that I found in the image I used. I tried to position everything following the rule of thirds and leave an attractive amount of negative space on the slide.

My internet is provided by Verizon. It comes in through a phone wire into the den. All the devices in my house use wifi, we have three laptops, two game systems, an Ipad, a Tablet, and three cellphones. Before this class I did not realize how much has to happen in the blink of an eye to bring me my internet. I also had no idea just how much control our internet service providers have over the content we're able to view and our internet speed, I would probably inform other people about this.
