Memento

Posted by Lamaya Mapp in Digital Video -4 day a week - Herman on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 7:15 pm

A killer with Amnesia ? There are very few Suspense/Thriller movies with this concept. When you think of a killer, you almost consider that person an animal. In this case he would technically be an animal because the one of the things that separate a human from an animal is in fact memory.  Go figure.  What this character represents, the structure of the film and the refreshingly new idea brought to the table is what made this movie great, brilliant. Leonard is on a quest of vengeance.

This movie starts off with a close up shot of the main character, Leonard Shelby, an investigator that is trying to figure out who raped and killed his wife, looking at photographs of a dead body.

As the move progresses it reveals that Leonard Shelby is in fact the killer of this man named Teddy. The movie is backwards. He takes the photograph of Teddy, then it rewinds back to him shooting Teddy and then all the way back to the Inn where the movies then stops moving backwards and continues forward.  He uses pictures and tattoos for him to remember who he has to kill and where he needs to go because of his short term memory and on the bottom front and back of the photographs he’ll have the person’s name and number and something like “Don’t believe his lies. He is the one kill him.” in order to remember his duties.

The main character can’t remember anything really except the day his wife was killed. His mind is so complex but at the same time understanding. He has the ability to remember something so explicit and yet can’t remember something as simple as a name. The character’s problem is what makes him unique and interesting and makes me want more.

As the film continued I noticed something going on with the colors the director decided to used in this film. Nolan used black and white sequences to show what happens in order and use the parts in color to show it in reverse. This was also a huge part of why the film was entertaining because he kept the viewers thinking and thinking until finally the two different sequences met.  This also made me feel what the character was feeling, confused and lost, which was a good thing.
In the pictures below it shows the two different color sequences, the one in black and white going forwards and the color one is played in reverse.

The middle-end to the end of the story, the main character meets with this woman, Sammy Jankis who at first has a weird relationship with Leonard. He met her during his job before the attack in his home happened. (The attack killed his wife and is the reason he has amnesia) We find out that Sammy was in a car accident. Later on in the movie she kept asking for her insulin but didn’t remember she had it already, neither one of them remembered and as a result she fell into a coma and died.

There wasn’t much music in the movie but mainly towards the climax it became very intense and scary.  Every time the main character got close to kill someone the music became louder and scary , but right before he does kill the the music is calm which always is scary.
The climax was also relieving to the mind after all this thinking, it reveals piece by piece and makes sense out of everything in chronological order (black & white) . His wife who was Sammy wasn’t really anyone and his actual wife survived the attack and was diabetic and that his wife died of insulin overdose and not “Sammy”.  Teddy ends up saying that  he even has a “John G”  name. This causes Leonard to write down Teddy’s driver’s plate and and get it tattooed on him and that lead to the very start of the movie to Teddy’s death.

Benchmark Reflection

Refer to Chelsea's blog post for the full project.

For the Student Cam benchmark, my group and I decided to focus on the First Amendment but really nail the thought of freedom of religion. In our group we realized that we all have completely different thoughts of religion. To some of us it was important and to the rest it wasn't so much. After having a discussion about religion, we then wondered how would we feel if someone told us we didn't have the right to believe in whatever we believe in. This is why we decided to make our project about freedom of religion.
The best part of this project was reflecting about how this Amendment effects society in a positive way and actually giving our own personal opinion about certain situations. In our case, we mainly focused on our religions and an debate about two completely different religions and their views about each other beliefs. The most challenging part was to say exactly how I feel and what I think without being offensive. I strongly dislike the thought of religion (but not the thought of Jesus and God or any higher power) so it was nearly impossible for me to explain how I felt and why.
What was interesting to me was the fact many people believe in things such as Agnostic theism and feel more how I feel about religion. During the early 1900s the people were more religious than people are today. I always thought that many people was always religious. I also thought that it was interesting that not many people.
This project could have been improved by allowing people to be very vocal about how they feel and not have any limitations. I think our video wasn't the best it could have been, with more work done to it, I believe that our video has the potential to be much better.
If I could redo this project, I wouldn't hesitate how I feel about religion, that's why I have this right. I wouldn't be blunt, and I won't down talk any religion but I thing raw feelings would have made this video better.

Income Tax Flow Chart (LaMaya Mapp + Tyler Hankinson)

Link to Flowchart:

Income Tax Flowchart

The task that we selected to do research about was Income Taxes using the 1040 and W-2 form.  During this process Tyler and I decided to come up with a definition of this process. We both tried to figure out why we file income tax in order to understand it better. We both came up with, "We file income tax returns in order to report all of our income and to determine how much of our total income will end up being taxable income. The taxable income will be subject to the income taxes at marginal tax rates. We also file this income tax to keep the services that the government has provided for us. The government use the revenue that comes from the amount of income taxes of the tax payers."  Learning and understanding the 1040 and W2 form was long and hard but it was worth it because we will be using this information soon enough in the future.  Making the flowchart was difficult because there were so many things to talk about and so many directions to follow, so instead, we summarized the process. The paper work was easy but LONG. It required basic information of payments that was given to us. I would only change the fact that it was long and the math needed to do the work. It's probably long and complicated because many people cheat on their taxes when filing for income and when they do, they will be sued by the government.

Lobbying Post # 3

Police are not enforcing laws and parents are still not taking responsibility for their children’s actions. This isn’t a good year in areas of Philadelphia because of this problem. As of now many elected officials have indicated that they are trying to figure out a solution for this problem without stepping their boundaries. Many people protest that parents are the only ones who can be accountable for this and the government is starting to become too personal when it comes to their lives. This law was signed by Mayor Nutter on November 14, 2011 and many people are not pleased with this. Many believe that we should be more focused on our economy and money for these children to help keep them out of trouble, not curfew.

The problem here is, how can you stop poverty? Where to start? Many people believe that in order to stop poverty, and violence is to educate and inspire many children, young adults and even adults. About a year ago, I emailed people who worked for ANNA C. VERNA about finding solutions to this problem. The ONLY answer I was given was, “we cannot force parents to do their job, we cannot force our morals onto someone else’s household. But we can give these children a better education.” After, I decided to go to South Philadelphia high school and talk to the special education teacher, Mrs. DeAngelo-Leary. There she interviewed many students and asked them about their views on life. Many replied that there isn’t anything beyond the world they live in (living in poverty, getting pregnant etc.) Many of them attended South Philadelphia High because no one really cared about their children whereabouts or education.

According to philly.com Many educators received constant pressure and were urged by administrators to not report any incidents that occur in schools. This is part of the problem. Many people aren't willing to take responsibility. Some people decide to handle situations differently in different schools, therefore it makes it difficult to tackle the situation and fix it.

There is nothing we can do about this situation beside promote education, and try to point in the correct direction. We can only be a positive influence and try to inspire these children and young adults to be something or someone better.

Reflection
Explain your decision making for choosing the bill.
I decided to choose this bill because I realized it was created after the Patriot Act and it was taking away our rights that were given to us in the constitution. It really created a lot of interest and made me want to look into it more.
Why did you choose the particular presentation format?
To make a movie and something visual with actual clips of the situation makes people want to pay more attention. History isn't the most liked topic, mainly because people find it boring, therefore I thought something visual would make it stand and pop out to its viewers.
What challenges did you overcome in completing the project?
The main problem was finding a lot of information about this bill because it was hidden from Congress and was not passed.
How would you do the project differently if you had to do it over again?
Probably make a better storyline or choose a different bill.
What did the research and investigation tell you about the creation process... from idea to bill to law?
The creation process doesn't seem as complicated as it really is. It starts off as a problem, then a group of people coming up with a plan to fix that problem, then if everyone agrees on it (Congress) it'll become a law.
Was the process easier or harder than you imagined based on your particular bill/law research?
It was harder then I expected. It was hard to find a bill/law that wasn't as confusing and had a lot of info to use in a story line.

Missouri v. Frye

Posted by Lamaya Mapp in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 10:46 pm
Missouri v. Frye
Case Issue: Can a criminal defendant who was convicted after a jury trial later argue that his lawyer was inadequate because he failed to tell him that prosecutors had offered a deal to plead guilty in exchange for a lighter sentence? And, if so, what should courts do to correct the lawyer's error?

What happened exactly?
A defense attorney failed to inform his client, Galin Edward Frye, who had been charged with repeatedly driving while his license was revoked, of a plea offer by the prosecution. After the offer by the prosecutors expired, Frye was arrested for the fifth time then later entered a guilty plea without having the option of the plea offer and was sentenced to three years in prison.

Problems:
The lawyer didn’t present the offer to the criminal defendant (Frye) therefore has violated the criminal defendant’s constitutional rights. The sixth amendment gives the criminal defendant the right to plead guilty if you choose too. In other words, you have a right to a fair trial. The amendment relates to the case because the counsel’s failure to communicate the plea offer prior to its expiration resulted in Frye not being able to plead guilty. During this seating, Attorney General Koster will advocate the law-enforcement position that Mr. Frye’s conviction should stand, and he should not be allowed to withdraw his guilty plea.

Missouri argues that Frye’s request gives attorneys the opportunity to strategically use plea offers as insurance policies against trial results that aren’t unpredictable. Missouri assures that, an attorney can allow a plea offer to expire without communicating it to the defendant, which means the lawyer wants the defendant has to stand trial hoping for a lighter sentence.

Conclusion
In this case, the Supreme Court has to decided whether the Sixth Amendment’s right to a fair trail and having effective assistance of counsel protects the criminal defendant whose attorney has not communicated the available plea bargain options,

Respondent Frye argues that his counsel’s failure to inform him of his plea offer was unreasonable and it prejudiced him. However, the State of Missouri maintains that Frye fails the prejudice requirements because prejudice requires a showing that, in the absence of attorney error, Frye would have pled not guilty and gone to trial.

Connection/Relation to other cases:
Missouri v. Frye case is connected to Lafler v. Cooper’s case, the only difference between the two cases is that the Lafler v. Cooper’s case criminal defendant decided to ignore the lawyer’s offer by pleading guilty, got a harsher sentence, and now wants to have privilege of that offer, which was admitting to the crime for a lighter sentence. Missouri v. Frye case criminal defendant was not notified of the deal the prosecutors offered, received a harsher sentence and now wants an opportunity to gain the right his lawyer failed to notify him of.

HILL v. LOCKHART

William Lloyd Hill pleaded guilty in the Arkansas trial court to charges of first-degree murder and theft of property. More than two years later he found out that his court-appointed attorney had failed to advise him that, as a second offender, he was required to serve one-half of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

My Opinion

It’s hard to say what exactly side I am on. I believe it was unfair and unjust to Frye because this situation validated his constitutional rights. He had a right to a fair trial, therefore I believe something should be done in his favor. I’m confused by Missouri’s side of defense because they are saying there needs to be proof that Frye would have pled not guilty if his lawyer had not made an error, which is assuming.  I don’t believe you can base anything of a assumption, but most likely it isn’t an assumption minding that Frye has been arresting for this crime numerous of times.  Also, the government is not responsible for any errors that were made by an lawyer.

No decision was made as of November 2, 2011. Many of the arguments are resorting back to the Hill v. Lockhart case.

Musical Instrument Blog #2

1. How is sound produced by this instrument (now that you know more about sound, please try to refer specifically to the energy transfer and vibrations)?

The viola vibrates to produce sound waves. Without energy there wouldn't be any sound. The bow vibrates the strings to produce sound.

2. Based on your understanding, how are you changing the pitch? What physical characteristics are important in this instrument?
We change the pitch my changing the frequency.

3. What materials will you actually be using for your instrument and why? How will you play your instrument? What is your plan for constructing the instrument?
I will play the instrument with a bow and arrow. I'm going to cut out the shape of it and place the piece together.

4. What outstanding questions do you still have?
None.

--How is it played? What does the person have to do to produce sound?

The arm holds up the viola, and the person playing the viola is holding it steady by the chin.  You would have to move the bow across the strings to produce sound.

--How do you change a note?

Each string itself has it’s own note so moving the bow across the strings. Then, depending on where you place your fingers on the string at the top, it changes the way the note sounds.

--How is it shaped?

It have a vase like shape.

--What does this make you think about how you can create and change sound?

Sound can be changed by adding pressure to a specific part.
