Karen Ossowski Capstone

A frame from the animation I was working on at school.

For my 2020 Senior Year Capstone, I knew I wanted to do animation because it was the only thing that I could think of to get a book I write in 10th grade into the world. When coming into this project, I knew I had to do some research on how to animation, that, and advice from Mr. Ugworji, After trying and trying to learn about animation, soaking in all the information I could, I started the animation. When I say that I learned about animation, it wasn’t as much as you think. The thing about animation is that everyone has a different way of doing it. When I started, it was time-consuming and hard, I kept going, doing my work in school when the coronavirus happened. While the world stopped, you can guess what also stopped. That’s right, my capstone. It was too late to change my capstone, but I couldn’t create the animation anymore, I didn’t have my teacher to teach me, and I didn’t have the right tools to do it. I don’t mean physical tools, I mean no way of knowing what I was doing. I will say that this was a very good learning experience and was a great opportunity to learn some stuff. I learned a lot about how to animate, mainly facts, and what to do when you are animating. I also learned a lot about time management, I wasn’t that great at it, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly. I am very grateful that I did this and got to do this, I wouldn’t change a thing about this year or this capstone.

Agent Of Change - Ossowski

Posted by Karen Ossowski on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 2:44 pm

In my last two posts, I talked about animal poaching and its effects on people and communities. Slate Post #1, I talked about an interview I did with my dad “The Hunter” and how he thought it effects people and communities, I also talked about my opinion on this topic. In Slate Post #2, I talked about an interview I found on the internet, and a survey I did for others opinions on animal poaching. I wanted to see what people knew about animal poaching. In this post, I will be talking about other research and my Agent Of Change for my You & the World project.

For my AOG, I did a animal poaching scavenger hunt for kids. However, I could not do my Agent Of Change because the park I was supposed to do it at, didn’t let me do it. I was going to donate to a fund called  “World Wildlife Fund”. This fund looked like a good place to raise money for, since I couldn’t volunteer at their organization. I was going to let 20 people come and search for a picture of an animal. Then they would come and get the prizes. They consisted of a mask, a little notebook, a stamp and a sticker.

I decided to do this scavenger hunt because it related to animal poaching very well. I think this was a good way to get the word of animal poaching out because everything was related to animals and they were hunting. They took the picture out of their place and got a prize for it.

This You & the World project made me feel proud for what I tried to accomplish. I almost hosted my very first event. I contacted an organization about everything I could do to help. Even though they said that I couldn’t volunteer, I did try to donate. In my project since I tried to host an event, I had to get in touch with the park I wanted to host the event at. They didn’t get back to me until Thursday afternoon telling me they couldn’t get the park set up in time. Although I did consider changing my AOC, I realized it was too late. If I were to do it again, I wish that I would’ve been able to actually do the scavenger hunt.

I feel like I could’ve done the AOC better because I didn’t give myself enough time to actually do the AOC because of other things. I had to do multiple others things and got sidetracked. I wish I was more focused with projects. I feel like I did learn a lot while I did this whole project, I learned about animal poaching, I learned about my family, I learned about other people in my community.  I also learned about how poachers do their “job” and even about how one came to be. I learned everything there is to know about animal poaching. I also learned how hard it is to host an event, and how much it takes to actually do it. Even though I didn’t get to do my AOC, I did make a change. When I sent my survey out, I made people think without them knowing it. The one question everyone had trouble with was the one I was most interested in. “DO you believe animals should be kept in zoo’s” (that’s not the exact question)

I hope that my project did impact a lot of people and got people thinking on animal poaching. If you would like more information about my topic please look at my Annotated Bibliography.

My element is Technetium (Tc), its atomic number is 43. My element is man-made by two scientists, one of them was a photographer. It is also radioactive and a small amount is found in stars. I chose my imagery by thinking it was radioactive, i figured if i was radioactive, then i could have the numbers and symbol surrounding the radioactive symbol. I went through this process with difficulty. I had many ideas surrounded by the radioactive symbol, however this was the most interesting one. Then i put the picture on a wax paper then put it on a foam board and indented everything that i wanted to be white. After that i rolled ink on it and put 6 copies on pieces of paper. I then let them dry and picked 3 of the best ones, cut them down and cut out 2 pieces on construction paper for the background of 2 of them. I then put the construction paper as the background of two of them and left one of them with no background. I glued on the backgrounds and i was done. I i did this differently, i would’ve done the prints better on the white paper because they can out weird. I liked the printing the best because it was really fun to roll the paint onto the foam board then rub the wooden spoon on the back of it for all of the paint to get onto the white paper. I just really like painting.

Animal Poaching; The Difference Between Us and Them

Posted by Karen Ossowski on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 8:58 pm

In my last Slate Post, I talked about the interview with a former hunter Matthew Ossowski. This time, I went bigger. The last post was all about poaching. I did even more research and learned new things about poaching. Most of this information is local. I surveyed 58 people, and these were my results.

I asked people multiple “True”and “False” questions to see what people know about poaching. There were some questions that are mixed with different amount of answers of “True” or “False”. For example one that people found hard was “Endangered animals should be kept in zoos”, 75.9% of people said “False” and 21.4% said “True”.

From Survey
From Survey
Then there were some that were all one either “True” or “False”. For example the statement was “Poaching only happens in one place” and all 58 people said “False”.
From Survey
From Survey
Over time people made multiple suggestions on how to make the survey better. One of them was to put a don't know/not sure option. I realized that after already getting responses. After reviewing these responses, I saw the very last question and thought these responses were interesting. This statement was probably the hardest to answer for a true and false. The statement was “People poach only for money. The answer was literally 50% “True” and 50% “False”.
From Survey
From Survey

For this post, I was wondering how much people actually know about poaching and how they would answer. I got my results by making the survey. These results helped my research because I saw poaching through other people’s eyes.  What people don’t know is the poachers feel. I found a website that interviewed an actual elephant poacher about his experiences. This is what I found:

The poacher (I will call him “the poacher” because I don’t want to intrude privacy) said that he only went hunting at night. He said that he did it for money for his family. He also said that he felt inhuman, like he didn’t want to but felt like he had to, so he did. He said that his family didn’t know he did this, that could never know. The only thing they knew was that he had a job, he then went home like nothing happened and was a normal father. The jail life changed him. He wasn’t allowed to go outside. They said he had done the worst crime than anyone else in there.

After he got out, he knew things had to change. When he did get out, he went straight to the wildlife authorities to get a job. The interviewer asked about what he would do to stop the elephants from being poached, he had the same idea that I did, to teach people the importance of the animals that are being poached.

Now that I have seen through the eyes of a poacher, I see why he did it. Although it was a bad choice and there were other options, I understand why he did it, not saying that I would do it, because I wouldn’t. However, my opinion has changed a little. Like Mr. Ossowski said in my last slate post, “ however if you're doing it to feed your family because you're poor, you know legally yeah it's wrong, if you're just doing it to eat, okay. But if you're doing it just to kill something or make money or something. I don't agree with that.”. This poacher was doing just that, making money for his family, any money he made would go straight to his six kids and wife.

Although I have done all this research over the course of this project, I am still wondering how cold hearted people have to be to actually start poaching. Unlike the poacher I wrote about who acted upon family, some people do it for other reasons such as to sell them to companies, some people work for the companies and people make them into jewelry.

For my “Agent of Change” portion of my project, I will set up a group to talk about the subjects of animal poaching, and the importance of just some of the animals that are being poached. Or I will make website so everyone can see it, and talk about the topics I mentioned.

Final Stamp Design - Ossowski

Posted by Karen Ossowski on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 1:39 pm

For the past 4 days, I have been developing my knowledge on negative and positive space. I came to think of it as positive space is the actual picture while negative space is the background. With this project you are to pick a picture, cut out the positive space and leave the negative space alone. The hard part was seeing the negative space in the positive pace. I had to picture the symbol i was doing as two different colors then cut out as I pictured it.

I’ve learned that artists use this to make different art pieces. They use this to see how the negative space surrounds the positive space. Artists use this tool to show the image easily. If the picture is a solid image, the negative and positive space are easy to detect, however if the picture has no negative space, it is hard to detect what the picture is sometimes. They can use this tool to show emotion. If there is a animal looking sad, it's raining, there is a lot of negative space, you are going to think that the image is trying to portray as sad.

For this stamp, I picked the “Deathly Hallows” sign from “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. Ever since I was a little girl, I was obsessed with Harry Potter and everything about it, including the story of the three brothers (where the Deathly Hallows sign originated from). This sign I liked because it could go with any color, the positive space could be red and the negative space blue. . This sign consists of a triangle with a circle in the middle then a straight line down the middle. I thought this would be a good sign to portray the lesson of negative and positive space because there is negative space that intersects with the positive space. I had to cut out the spaces inbetween the lines so you could see the actual picture. You can easily see the picture of the Deathly Hallows sign with the black and white combination (Black being the positive space and white being the negative space).

This project has given me a different perspective on what artwork is and how artists see it. Now whenever I look at a picture or painting I will look for the negative and positive space in it. I will know the difference on what is the negative and positive space. I will be able to tell what the picture is conveying through the negative or positive space. I hope this helped you know what negative and positive space is and I hope that you will use it to your advantage also.

W3 D2 Negative Space - Ossowski

Posted by Karen Ossowski on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 1:14 pm

Negative space is the background of a picture. For example, say you have a picture of a tree, the background would be behind it, like the sky. That is all negative space. I fould negative space in my picture by looking at it symmetrically. The background in this is black, that is the negative space. I find negative space a representative for what could be there. For example, in this picture, if we zoomed out, we could add a background to make it look like a flag on a flagpole. It helps to see in negative space for an artist so they can show emotion in their work. If you look into a picture and it has a dark snowy background, you can assume it’s winter and that something is sad. Negative space can enhance pictures depending how big the negative space is. For example, back to the flagpole picture, that will enhance the picture. However, if you look at the picture below, the negative space does not enhance the picture because it’s so small.

Animal Poaching - Killing the Animals We Should Love

Posted by Karen Ossowski on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 9:11 pm

Over the years, people get confused on what animal poaching is, and what animal hunting is.  Animal poaching is illegal animal hunting, in this case, they take elephant tusks and other things such as skin. They then sell these things for money, or even process them to make something else. There are multiple reasons why animals are hunted and killed by poachers. One of  them is religion, they think of some animals as pests, that they shouldn’t be on their land. So they hunt them out of the land. People get into fights about this because some religions see animals as sacred animals , almost as gods, so they try to protect them from the hunters or poachers.

A few days ago, I  interviewed a former hunter, he was easy to reach out to considering that he lives in my house. This person is named Matthew Ossowski, otherwise known as my dad. He started to hunt before I was born. This is how the interview went.

First I asked about his past, how he started, etc. He started with “I was 26 when i started hunting.” He continued to say that he started because he learned how to shoot a bow and arrow. His friends were into hunting and he wanted to try and see if he liked it. He said when he was there he didn’t see any other people or hunters other than the people he was with. I then asked him what he hunted during that time. He replied that he only hunted overpopulated animals such as deer and squirrel, but he wants to go to Australia to hunt kangaroo because they are really overpopulated there. He also said that he saw other animals when hunting such as bears, foxes, and hawks.  With his friends he hunted in the Poconos and only ever wanted to hunt there (in the US). He also explained that he only ever thought of legal hunting.

I then started to get into the topic of animal poaching, I asked him what the difference is between animal poaching and hunting. He replied with “ A lot of the time poaching is, your trespassing, you know, you would be hunting out of season. A lot of people, like people up in the mountains, they poach to pretty much eat. Not like say in places like Africa, where they poach to kill trophy animals, you know like elephants for their trunks or whatnot. Poaching is just people not following the rules.” I then proceeded to ask him if he thought poaching was wrong. He said “ 99.9% of the time yes, however if you're doing it to feed your family because you're poor, you know legally yeah it's wrong, if you're just doing it to eat, okay. But if you're doing it just to kill something or make money or something. I don't agree with that.

I then asked him a series of questions about animal poaching and his opinion on the topic, while answering these questions, he added on to his previous statement. “That's the other thing about poaching, sometimes with poaching their using weapons, that are, that I don't agree with, like machine guns and things like that. I don't agree with that at all.” I asked him if he ever thought about stopping poaching, he stated “ No because the poaching where I go, I agree with. However, if I had the resources and time, I might.”

Animal poaching is a very serious topic for me because I love all animals, I dont have the heart to kill something, but I do have the heart to stop something from being killed. I believe that poaching (the bad poaching, killing trophy animals) should stop. People kill animals only for price, for money, are disobeying the rules of hunting, they go and kill something out of season, they take their trunks, then leave the body there to rot.

Rhinos in africa are being killed. There are things we can do to stop it, but there are things that this does to the environment also.Such as the food chain, animals being killed and become extinct. While this happens another animal dies because they can’t get food to eat.  All around the world there are organizations trying to stop this from happening. They go around the world to keep poachers away from the animals, although it is working, just not enough.

In my research, I have learned multiple things. I’ve learned about hunting, and poaching. I’ve learned that even though we use some of these things we take from the animals, we mainly hurt them. However I still question why we do it. We don’t need the horns or trunks of rhinos or trunks of elephants. I hope that in the future i find the answer to this question and maybe change other people's minds too.

W2 D2 Printmaking - Ossowski

Posted by Karen Ossowski on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 11:40 am

Printmaking is the process of carving on a surface, then rolling ink on it to print on paper. This is useful because you can use the same surface with the carvings again to print on paper. You can copy the picture again and again with the same surface.

It was invented by Daniel Hopfer, the invention started in China, then moved to the Middle East. Printmaking was used on walls, stone, and even bones from long ago. It is believed that the Egyptians didn't start using wood blocks until the 6th or 7th century. When doing this process the Hopfer not only invented the idea of multiplying something, but the roller also. Before that, they used the rubbing method.

This artist decided to do a animal near a tree when it is snowing. You can tell it is snowing from all the white on it. The artist creates space by making the hill and the tree close but not on the same angle. The face on the animal shows that it is scared of the viewer or is cold because of the snow. The contrast shows that it is dark. The tree in this also has texture so you know there aren’t any leaves, you know it is winter. I notice that the animal looks at the viewer with such sadness that you actually feel sad. When I saw this I knew I had to critique it because it gave me emotion. I honestly love this print because of that.

Karen Ossowski Reflection on Media Fluency

Posted by Karen Ossowski in Technology - Freshman · Hull · d1 Band on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 10:15 am
second tech slide Karen ossowski (1)

During this project i learned about different kinds of slides. You can do different colors, hence the title, moving pictures or videos, and about the different shades you do in different lights. For example, in the daytime or bright light, you should do duller or darker colors. However if you are in darker light, you should do brighter colors.

In my new slide, i didn't put too many words in and i put more visual stuff. I still kept the books but instead i put multiple books. I also changed the background to a very light gray and put a darker border of gray around the pictures.  In the slide that you see the title is supposed to be all on one line, but the size of the image messed it up.

During this project, research is very important. I say this because without it we wouldn't know what we are doing. If Ms. Hull didn't set us up to fail, we would have failed on a very important project. In the beginning when i did my research, i didn´t know how important it would be. If we didn't do research, we would have done a mess, colors would've been all over the place and we would bleed everything, etc.
Hope you like this slide better than the other one. Thanks for reading.

Introducing Me - Karen Ossowski

Posted by Karen Ossowski on Monday, December 5, 2016 at 2:21 pm
Intorducing Me Karen Ossowski (1)

Hello. You already know my name, but i will repeat it again for the sake of profession.

My name is Karen Ossowski.

My ¨Me Magazine¨ is called Introducing Me.

In the making of this project, i thought about not only the ¨Me Magazine¨ but i opened up to myself and thought, ¨who am i?¨ ¨what makes me, me?¨

I thought about it for a while, and i tried to put it in a few sentences.

What i didn't put in the slide, is my adventure with my best friend.

Some of you may have heard of this story before if you read my ¨Me Magazine¨

I won't tell the story for the sake of time, but if you really want to know i'll tell you later in the presentation.

I looked at how they put videos in frames, but i don't have any, so i went with the appearing. I also thought about colors, i thought to go light on the eyes and not make this too bright, i know that colors was a big thing and so was text fonts.

They said to go with lighter colors in the light and brighter in the dark.

One of the websites said something about a 90 something font size, and i thought, no way am i going to pull that off, i can barely get a 20 font.

I went with a smaller font because, well, i can write , but also, because it may keep some people interested, some maybe not, but with a lot of words it may hurt your eyes. I decided to do only some words but with a bigger font. I put a picture in the background because it represents my love for books and photography.

I tried to keep this slide simple, it tells you a lot about me, i'm simple, i keep things simple and that tells you a lot about my personality, the personality that you don't know very well.

Some things i'm not used to and i have to get used to considering i am going to be here for the next four years of my life.

Opening up to people is one of them, i told some of you about my anger issues, and possibly how i'm bipolar, so is most of my family.

Changing the subject back to the slide, it expresses a lot about me when it comes to the books. As you know from the slide i said that my adventures are on pages through my eyes. The photo also represents my love for photography, i love taking pictures and doing art in general, when it comes to things like art, i'll be up all night. Now that i've told you about my slide, i am concluding this presentation. Hope you liked some of it at least (i'm probably changing that last sentence)
