Art History:
Artist: Shepard Fairey
Shepard Fairey is one of my favorite contemporary street artist, designers, and illustrators. His work I feel captures our generation with complete perfection. My most favorite deigns stem from his clothing line that he created in 2001 called “Obey.” Shepard gained a lot of fame when he created the 2008 historical hope poster for Obamas Campaign. Fairey isn’t afraid to speak through his art and deliver emotions from our generation through art.
Fairey’s work began in 1984 when he started to design t-shirts and skateboards. Ever since then he has been making controversial statement art that I completely love.

Qrt. 4 Benchmark
I wanted to create a visual story that depicted inequality in the U.S and how young people grow up masked by their surroundings. I think it is important to show how helpless and innocent children are in a world ruled by adults. My work incorporates storytelling by using the worlds of a song and footage to match my interpretation of those words. I hope my audience gains a perceptive of a child in a world of corruption with very little assistance to escape poverty. By doing this project I gained a lot of experience editing film and trying to depict an ever changing vision.

Selfie Assignment:
I think selfies are important for the simple fact that they capture us at that very moment. I think our generation really likes to be publicized for no specific reason other than being alive, which is why twitter, instagram, and other social networks are so important. When I take a selfie, not much thought goes into it, rather confidence of how I look at that moment. I really believe thats one of the biggest reasons people take selfies, next to pure fun. When selfies are taken, I think a lot goes unseen. Selfies depict only happy moments, no one wants to take a picture of themself when they are crying or even experiencing any emotion that isn’t close to joy. Thats pretty much as far as I can analyze selfies, they just are.

Single line Art: I found this piece online and absolutely fell in love with the creativity of it.I found this image on the nuts net website but could not find its mystery creator. I thought the music theme was amazing and attempted to draw it all with one line in the same way that its original creator did. I was aware of many other forms of art and drawings but line drawling was something new that I found and wanted to explore.

Pablo Picasso Research:
Picasso lived between the years 1881 and 1973. During these years the spanish artist created tons of pieces, making him one of the most legendary artist, sculptors, painters and printmakers of all time. Despite all the popular images commonly displayed and mentioned in media, Picasso is also responsible for Co- Founding the Cubist Movement, he invented “Constructed Culture,” and also the co-invention of the “Collage.” Picasso was born into an art fluent family, his father was a painter. Some of his art may have been influenced by incidents present in his life. For instance, his sister Conchita died at age seven of diphtheria. Picasso was lucky enough to be sent to a very prestigious art school called “Madrid’s Royal Academy of San Fernando.” Despite Picasso’s schooling, his raw talent and groundbreaking creativity made him one of the most innovative artists of all time.

Philadelphia Housing Infrastructure
Running a champaign is an emotional roller coster rode by multiple people. My group was given Philadelphia Housing Infrastructure. The first step we took was acknowledging the problem. The group who first presented this obstacle proposed that there were two many abandon houses in Philadelphia, around 40,500 estimated. We decided we could take this a step further then that. Philadelphia has about 4,000 homeless people. These numbers, to us, made no sense. We noticed we had an abundance of vacant houses and thousands of people who were in need of homes, so we put the two together. We figured Philadelphia could simply solve our abandoned house problem by filling them with people who need homes, sounded so easy.
Well, the first thing we discussed was how we were just going to go about giving random people homes. We know that many people struggle with difficulties and are actually trying to advance in life. However, we are also aware of people who would take advantage of this initiative, so we decided to create a binding contract. People would be assigned homes which are vacant and would be expected to care for them to the best of their ability. That means picking up trash around it and also cleaning it out on their own. This would not only give homeless people motivation to have something they owned but also slowly decrease the amount of liter in Philadelphia. Once they showed care for a home over a certain time period we planned on the government helping to fund construction of the homes. That was until we sent a letter to the mayors office and got no response.
This is when we knew what we wanted from the general public. The point of our champaign was to try to get people to donate funds and materials to our initiative. We created posters which we posted around the center city area which lead people back to our website. The point of the posters were to grab people’s attention and promote our champaign at the same time. We also set up a QR code so viewers with smart phones could be lead directly to our website and social networking sites. So our champaign consist of 6 components:

-QR code
For a group of 17 year olds I think we did pretty well trying to publicly push an initiative we built from the ground up. However, our champaign was not a cake walk. We had many grand ideas which we completely dropped when it was time to implicate them. For instance, we wanted to promote our champaign through a physical sculpture. This sculpture consisted of four nice bird houses and one broken down bird house. We were planing on writing “even birds wouldn't live here” on the sculpture and placing a simple QR code to our website. This,we thought, would grab people’s attention because it was odd and mysterious. However, our designated birdhouse hunter Tsion, found it very hard to find bird houses for sale in the city. She went to multiple art stores and was left empty handed. We could have ordered them off line, but it was unknown when we would receive them, so we trashed the idea. Ideas which we could not implicate in real life left us with more lessons learned rather then disappointment. When everything was said and done, we realized ideas blossomed when they were thought of outside of the box but we had to watch our physical limitations. Duong Nghe Ly is a chinese student who immigrated to Philadelphia. He Attended South Philly High School, which was predominantly populated by African American Students. He was one of 30 chinese students who were victims to racial abuse. In this journal entry he recounts on his experience at South Philly High School. This source provided us with a specific example of violence due to race concentration in Philadelphia. Duong Nghe Ly serves as an eyewitness account and represents our perception of the results of racial separation in Philly.

Celia Caust-Ellenbogen is a intern for the Quakers and Slavery Digitization Project. Her source gave us a sort of starting point on figuring out why Philadelphia attracted so many races. Celia collected all of her information from primary sources, which she references at the end of her work. Celia gave us a lot of intel on Philadelphia Hall, which was created to be a meeting place for radical topics such as slavery, Indians, and free speech. We relied on Celia’s work to give us details on what could be one of the historical factors that attracted people to Philadelphia.
3) Denvir, Daniel. "Segregation: New studies show Philly has nation’s most separate and unequal schools, neighborhoods. Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Detroit close behind.." Citypaper Newsletter . Daniel Denvir is a freelance writer and journalist who dared to cover the racial separation in Philadelphia in 2011. This article uses studies from Brown University sociologist John Logan which gives potential causes for racial segregation in Philadelphia. This was important research for our project because it gave us depth on topics we could choose to branch off and study. Daniel also offers many statistics on income levels that compare African American income levels to that of whites. Overall, this source gave us more justification that Philadelphia does have a racial segregation problem.
4) "Bureau of Labor Statistics ." Overview of BLS Demographic Data. 2010. <http://www.bls.gov/bls/demographics.htm>.
While researching we realized we were dealing with a topic that had its own name, demographics. Demographics are statistics and facts regarding populations and groups within a population. The United States Department of Labor Offered us many demographic topics related to race in the U.S. We were able to use these statistics to compare philadelphia to the rest of the country. We also realized this bureau had a lot of interesting facts and explanations pertaining to of country.

Gus Lubian and Christine Jenkins are journalist who incorporated many statistics and databases to create a list of the 22 most segregated cities in America. They got their information on Philadelphia from studies done at Brown University. We discovered that Philadelphia is number 7 on this list of 22. This statistic gave us a clear view of where exactly Philadelphia rages in segregation compared to the other very segregated cities in the U.S.

This interview contains a personal story described by Kathana Smith. Ms. Smith talks about her experience immigrating to the U.S. Ms.Smith discusses her experience arriving to Philadelphia and why she chose to live in Philadelphia. Ms.Smith also describes her transition from previously living in Barbados to caring for her family in Philly. This interview added depth to our project being providing a persoanl story of immigration to philadelphia.

Project Reflection
The first project we were given In American History was one which we looked at immigration to the U.S causes over many decades.We broke off into groups of 3 and studied the decades 1830 to 2000. I was assigned the years 1890-1940 and already had a pretty basic idea as to why people would move to America during this time.I knew that the Holocaust would be a big factor but one thing that shocked me was the Russians who were escaping religious persecution in the Soviet Union. This event really surprised me because the targeted group was Christians. Prior to this project I thought that Christianity was the top religion therefore people couldn’t be persecuted if they were Christian. At this time period Atheism was the doctrine of the Soviet Union. This really changed my view on how people approach religion.
The last two decades (1990-2000) the highest number of immigrants moved to America. Based on that trend I can predict that factors going on in current world news would cause many people to immigrate to America. For instance, I am aware of the problems in the middle east, so maybe those factors will contribute to an increase of immigration.
Working on this project showed how we have grown since 9th grade. I was expecting certain people to procrastinate or not give their all. I was surprisingly shocked at how easy it was to get in contact with my group members and how we all cooperated with each other.I think we all stepped our game up knowing that the 11 grade year would be particularly hard.
Once we gathered enough research it was hard to figure out how to present our work without repeating too much of what other groups would say or putting our audience to sleep. We had a lot of information and very little time and space to match. We didn’t want to put a chart up and read off it because no one wants to look at charts after doing a whole project on spreadsheets and probably organizing their own work in charts. The idea of using a prezi was brought up by me because I remember watching a prezi presentation over the summer. As an audience member I liked how everything was animated and it almost felt more like a very interesting TED talk, rather than a high school keynote presentation. Looking back, I feel like we choose wisely because we were the only ones in the class who did a prezi which makes us stand out. We really just wanted to be remembered because everyone was going to present that same information and when people reflected on this project we wanted to be one of the groups they would bring up.
I do regret not remembering all the information we were suppose to relay verbally to to the class. Once we began to present it was as though we all forgot the valuable details we meant to say. However, I feel as though our basic ideas were grasped by the class because it was all around the same research that everyone else did. So, if I could do anything differently it would have been to give more details during the presentation as if we were presenting to an audience who didn’t do this project.
Once we were first introduced to the immigration project it was hard to picture what our final work would look like and how we would even go about this long journey of research we had ahead of us. Now that we were able to successfully tackle not understanding a project to actually finishing it, the bar for all our other work is set higher. I feel like once I have completed something I didn’t think I could, any other thing should become easier to handle.
With that said I am excited about any other challenging work we will have in the future and how I am able to confidently start something when I have no idea what my outcome would be.
