Capstone Khari Evans

Posted by Khari Evans in Capstone - Baird - Wed on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 2:59 pm
Project abstract:

For my capstone I wanted to have a project that was reflective of my interests in engineering. The goal, to create a arm will add 100 lbs lifting capacity to the user. I did this by using a system of pulleys and springs to create a mechanical advantage. By doing this project I now have  deeper understanding of some aspects of physics and about different materials and what I can and cannot do with them. In the end , I created a arm that works.

Honus. "How to make air muscles!."Instructables. N.p., n.d. Web. 3 Feb. 2014. <http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-air-muscles!/>.

From this site we learned the properties of something we call an Air muscle which is something we came across in another search. Air muscles contract and expand and can be used for to pull 400 times their own weight depending on their size. Many of them even work when wet. Another name for them are acutators.

Chewee. "Pneumatic Muscles." Instructables. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.instructables.com/id/Pneumatic-Muscles/>.

Pneumatic Muscles are another kind of air muscles they can be used for even more things because they can come in different shapes. They can be used in pulleys and also work when wet and even under small amounts of damage

Mikey. "Air Muscles: Make an Artificial Muscle Robot Controller." Instructables. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.instructables.com/id/Air-Muscles-Make-an-Artificial-Muscle-Robot-Contr/>.

This is a instructable for a complex system of air muscles that are all controlled through a system of circuit board. The muscles can be monitored using the circuits and also operated the same way. We mostly wanted to observe a complex system from this link even though we don't plan to make a circuit board in our own.

Krasnow, Ben. "Tutorial: How to build an air muscle and use it in a force-feedback joystick." YouTube. YouTube, 17 Feb. 2011. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkaVsoEd6Vo>.

This is another application of air muscles which is what we are really set on using at this point. In this video someone made a very simple air muscle in a joystick and how the system can be measured and used in a plane or helicopter

Daerdan , Frank, and Dirk Lefeber . "Pneumatic artificial muscles: Actuators for Robotics and Automation ." Publications of Brussels University Department of Mechanical Enginering. N.p., n.d. Web. 1 Feb. 2014. <http://lucy.vub.ac.be/publications/Daerden_Lefeber_EJMEE.pdf>.

This is a publication of a document about the effects of a pneumatic muscle and how the displacement of the muscle works.

"Air Muscle." Air Muscle. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.efunda.com/sponsors/inventables/AirMuscle/AirMuscle_Intro.cfm#PageTop>.

Air muscles mirror what human muscles do. Air muscles, similar to actual muscles can only pull when air is pushed into them and aren't really meant for pushing. Another muscle or alternative needs to be used to create a force in the opposite direction.

"High power military robotic Exoskeleton." YouTube. YouTube, 26 Nov. 2007. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hkCcoenLW4>.

This video is a purposefully made leak of military tech that utilizes hydraulic pumps and pneumatic muscles in an entire suit that can move cargo a lot more efficiently then people ny themselves.

Channel, Intel. "Student-designed Upper-body Exoskeleton Provides Augmented Strength." YouTube. YouTube, 12 Aug. 2013. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D184ntU5XFw>.

This was done by students at UPenn, and this is a more complex version of what we hope to accomplish in our own exo-skeletal mechanical advantage. This arm is lightweight and can give the user an addition 40 pounds of force that they are able to carry.

"Titan Arm." Titan Arm. University of Pennsylvania, n.d. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://titanarm.com>.

This is the website from the video above that shows discussions with the studentsand more examples of the way the arm can be used. The arm itself, is something that doesn't wrap around the arm like some other designs we have observed.

"Arm and Hand." Mars Science Laboratory:. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/mission/rover/arm/>.

The robotic arm used on a rover has the same three joints as that of a human arm and can move almost just as much. It isn't an exoskeleton in anyway but it was useful for seeing how inanimate objects can mimicking humans.

To take pictures of myself it's usually for business or just for some kind of professional things and I don't really take that many pictures of myself because this. I guess I just never been as camera crazed as some other people are. In fact it seems to me that the photos where I looked the happiest or look the most joy for photos that other people take. This is because I'm really bad at taking pictures when I expect them. Most people who know me know that if they want to get a good picture of me they have to get it in the moment because I can't really smile for the camera that's just not the kind of person I am.

This makes most of the pictures I have that one could consider selfies are simple tests of the camera that I was using. Which is why and most of the pictures you'll notice that my face very relaxed and expressionless. On the flip-side sometimes I do silly pictures when I find myself with free time while I usually delete them as soon as I take them I posted one for the benefit of this assignment.

Writing helps me to connect to my ideas. In my mind everything is fluid, changing writing helps me anchor my thoughts and study them. This also me to see the big picture of my mind. Without writing I would be without focus, wandering in the static look for the door. Writing is my platform to present me, khari to the world and to be understood by all.

Process paper

Process paper

This benchmark was all about solving problems in Philadelphia. The topics each group chose were based on the more popular topics from a previous assignment that we did now our group chose school district funding because he felt that was the most important problem in Philadelphia. So taking examples from the previous website that we have used it to help us with this assignment I had decided to use of the fat cards that I found the website drugs.org because it was able to display a little information without overwhelming the person as well as powering down to feels that they might be interested in. I felt that by only giving cold hard facts then people can accuse you of having any biased for situation because all you're presenting the truth also 50 book and search for their own things they can find out exactly what they're interested in and therefore is not as much runaround as I found in some of the website that I like the least of the examples. To do my research I looked at several documents first to see what were the underlying causes of the shortage of money in the Philadelphia school district so I want to sources like the Philadelphia Inquirer the New York Times government stop or which is a newspaper from Washington DC to kindly get back on information and learn more about my subject. From there going on the Philadelphia school does you to Philadelphia website I found information about the fiscal year for 2011 2012 and then by looking up on a government website I found what that was compared to the best rated school district in the country which is a school district Wyoming and although Wyoming has a smaller population Philadelphia like a really smaller population of Philadelphia Wyoming distributes It's money around its population better and also since it has a relatively high concentration of money for the amount of people it has it consider one the best. After researching that I posted some information about the 26th now less 16 schools that were closed down in Philadelphia because of budgeting problems because it was an issue that was related and it was relevant to our times and related with her subjects up it was ideal to put it.
Some things that I want to do better and my next power jack is I want to be able to find better sources I had a little difficulty finding sources for my fat cards some of the financial information was a lot harder to find than I first speculated. Also feel like I should've asked more some of our partners wanted to say so we could seem to have a more organized argument that everyone was doing her own part sometimes the Sum of the parts doesn't always fit the whole and although I don't think this is the case I feel like everything could fit a little bit tighter and maybe I had collaborated more of mother partners nothing I didn't just you can always try harder. All in all though it turned out okay and I feel like a collaborative effort was a good one.

"FBI — Witness Cooperation Campaign Launched in Philadelphia." 2010. 18 Feb. 2013 <http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2006/february/stepup_020106>
This is an official news article on an effort in Philly to try and increase the number of witnesses who will step forward and say what they know so that our court system will work. The purpose of the campaign was to inspire people to do the right thing.

Anderson, John. Gang-related witness intimidation. Bureau of Justice Assistance, 2007.

"Pair held for witness intimidation - Philly.com - Featured Articles from ..." 2012. 18 Feb. 2013 <http://articles.philly.com/2012-08-16/news/33233632_1_witness-intimidation-toteyanin-jones-preliminary-hearings>

This is an article on a court case where witness intimidation played a factor. It article also quotes law-enforcement officials on their views on the problem of witness intimidation.

“Witness intimidation is rampant in Philadelphia and has led to murder and killers walking free, law-enforcement officials say.”

“Unfortunately, the reality in Philadelphia is that virtually every homicide case is negatively affected by witness intimidation," District Attorney Seth Williams told City Council during budget hearings last year. "People are literally afraid for their lives - or the lives of their loved ones - to testify."

(I got this one)
Sostek, Anya . Terrified to Testify Increasingly, criminal cases are being stalled because intimidated witnesses don't show up or because they recant their statements.
Washington, D.C. : Governing magazine, 2007.
<http://www.governing.com/topics/public-justice-safety/Terrified-Testify.html>

This is a magazine article that calls for a witness intimidation law that would impose heavy fine on intimidators as well as allow witness to testify with coming to court.

“Witness intimidation, of course, is nothing new. Examples of jailhouse snitches date back centuries in England, while the concept of omerta, or a "code of silence," has also existed for hundreds of years in Mafia communities. The difference between those concepts and what is going on today is that the "stop snitching" mantra has become a cultural phenomenon affecting law-abiding citizens and even children.”

“Blatant examples of witness intimidation are unfortunately abundant. Six members of the Dawson family were killed in East Baltimore in 2002 when their house was firebombed in apparent retaliation for their repeated calls to police to complain about drug dealing. In 2004, Newark police attributed the murder of four people in a vacant lot to the fact that one was a murder witness; a witness to the quadruple murders was later killed as well. Last year, at least eight witnesses to the murder of a 10-year-old boy in Philadelphia went silent when called to the witness stand.”

“Jessamy says that she started to notice the growing incidence of witness intimidation about five years ago, in the course of looking at statistics charting why certain cases hadn't moved forward. Increasingly, cases were being stalled because witnesses either weren't showing up or were recanting their testimony.”

Philadelphia: WHYY, 2013.
<http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/local//philadelphia/49315-state-study-philly-needs-more-funds-to-fight-witness-intimidation>

A report by a state Senate advisory panel on funding the witness intimidation program.

A report by a state Senate advisory panel says Pennsylvania should give more money to Philadelphia to crack down on witness intimidation.
The committee,  made up of judges, professors, prosecutors and other experts in the judicial system, is urging more state funding for the city's victim assistance program. The extra money would pay for witness relocation expenses -- as well as hiring a team of prosecutors to help crack down on intimidation of witnesses.

<http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2009/12/14/on-snitches-and-stitches-in-philly/>

“B“It’s endemic. People are frightened to death,” said District Attorney Lynne M. Abraham. “We’ve had witness after witness intimidated, threatened, frightened.”

“Indeed, the Inquirer story is chock full of terrifying anecdotes. But what can a city like Philadelphia do to combat the problem? Two things, it appears: try to prosecute those who intimidate witnesses as well as guarantee the safety of those who do testify.”

“According to the story, witness intimidation convictions can be tough to land. Prosecutors charged about 1,000 people with witness intimidation between 2006 and 2008. Of resolved cases, prosecutors won a conviction on witness-intimidation charges only 28 percent of the time.”

“And without the ability to protect those who testify, it’s hard to make a dent in the problem.”

“That fear, that’s real,” said Jamie Egan, a former city prosecutor. “When people would ask me if I could guarantee their safety, I would say, ‘Unfortunately, I cannot.’”
Part of the problem stems from the fact that funding for Philly’s witness protection program is down.”

“Statewide, according to the Inquirer, money for witness relocation has dropped off in recent years, a casualty of budget cuts and the faltering economy. While the Philadelphia program spent just over $11,000 per witness last year, the federal witness-protection program spends more than four times that.”

My project is a water bottle that lights up when touched. Water is a key part of life and without it we could not survive as we are. Drinking water is even more important as it is a finite resource and its availability has shaped human history. The light my project represents life so when one holds the bottle it give that life.

Describe the Q3BM: what was the assignment?  What did your group decide to do and why?

I learned a LOT about how to present a project on a blog

I feel ok about how the project turned out but I feel more could still be done.

If I were to do it over again I would film each part on location

Dreams

Many people have dreams when they are little. Farfetched dreams that are soon washed away in the tide of life. However sometimes people see their dreams come true. In this podcast we will hear the story of someone who saw their dreams come true... My mom I'm Khari Evans stay tuned.
mom's interview 2

Reflection:

Editing and producing my product for me was a learning experience. At first I thought that it would be an easy project and could be done quickly. I got my interview done quickly and had a ok sound quantity. However after listening to Ira glass of this American life I thought otherwise. One line that stuck-out for me is when Ira was talking about killing (cutting) the interview was the most important thing to do in a podcast. When listening to his show you can see how cutting helps a podcast become better. Listen to podcast last year helped with what not to do. When I was interview my mom I learn a lot of stuff that I didn’t know before and because that I might have went off topic. These are the things I cut while editing. Editing for me before this topic was just to fix mistake, but in podcasts the editing is over of a way to control the flow in a story. One thing I would like to do next time is interview more people and ask better questions. I don’t think that I drew the interviewers in as well as I could. All and all I liked the project.

My mom I feel was a great interviewee however she was sleepy when I did it and that was not the best time to interview her. For this fat I think that sound quality might have suffered. My mom’s room however was a good place to record. Thinking back another person add to the interview would have probably made it better. I had planed out having another person in the first place but found that I could not meet with that person. I also want to interview people in the school for that would have been fun foe everyone.

May I Have...

Posted by Khari Evans in English 2 - Pahomov on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 8:23 am

“May I the have the turkey club without bacon?”
“Sssr Hun. Would you like some wooder?”
“Yes please with lemon.”
I did not know it then, but the way I speak has a big impact on how the world views me. Some people might think I’m rich or something because I speak “proper”. Some people think I’m sucking up or trying to act superior.
“Why you talk that way? Are you White?” I usually ignore them because I don’t really talk all that differently then they do. In fact I talk the same way they do in a language called English. You would think people with an accent would have a hard time fitting in But for me its the opposite. My lack of accent is what makes me standout for better or worst. When in the “hood” some people think it’s uncool. When out in the street some people look at me like “ I didn't know black people could talk” I think I have always talked well, but never in a dry NPR kind of way. I have an accent apart from my “white” or Philly ones. It is my accent picked up from living with a crazy family, and hours of watching Star Trek.

When I was little I loved using big words because if you did people would listen. Strangers would upon meeting me exclaim how smart I was, telling my mom I should get tested as if she did not know me. My big vocab at a young age also got me into trouble. For example in kindergarten a fellow classmate was talking to me about animals.

“ My favorite animals are cats and dogs and fish and...”

I knew a lot on the subject and chimed in.

“ You know you’re a animal”

“No I’m not,” she said loudly

“ Yes you are, you’re a mammal”.

At this point she had enough of my blasphemous tongue, so she ran off to the teachers. “Khari called me a mammal” It took the teachers a while to calm the child. Then they want me to say sorry to her, for what I thought, but gave a half hearted one anyway. Now I know this is taking it a bit too far but people seem to be insulted with certain language when the meaning is unknown to them. It holds some weight over their heads. One must first take in account the place where people come from in order to communicate.

I used to feel that in order to be understood I had to change the way I talked depending on where I was. I didn’t want them to judge me by the way I spoke. So I try to sound less like me and more like the people I was trying to fit in with. This reminds me of a quote in James Baldwin If Black English Isn’t a Language, Then Tell Me What Is. He says, “What joins all languages, and all men, is the necessity to confront life”. This fear of being left out or being seen as an outsider brings to mind “the necessity to confront life”. For that is all a language is, a way to describe life. So that being said the language of others I used to fit in, was not reflecting my life. I want to not lie to people with my voice, I started to talk normally and use “big words”. The dreaded insults came back, for a little while anyway, but over time they got bored with the teasing and got used to my voice.

Looking back, it feels rather silly to try to sound like someone am not. However the reasoning behind the action was sound. With so many people in the world trying to fit into social boxes, it is hard to say true to yourself. I might have stopped trying to sound like other, but there is still pressure to be like them. So keeping in mind “the necessity to confront life” I must make sure I’m true to mine.

monologue

Posted by Khari Evans in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 11:58 am

To the Grave

Where are you that you can sting me with out fear of retaliation marksman? Making me lie in this pit of mud and rocks, the womb of the earth dyeing. Why do you wait in the shadows? Come out and face me! (Tries to stand up but falls) I see you approach me from the dark corners of my eyes and I say, stay back. Is it time to go so early? My body is still filled with rage and the adventure of youth. Has my fruit withered on the vine before harvest day? NO, this must be a dream that lies on the precipice of a nightmare. I must wipe the sleep from my eyes and cast away the warm blanket of blood. My thoughts rush through me in a harmonic hum that reminds me of a lullaby, I can’t remember its name nor want to.

After cursing you I manage a crawl to my gun half buried in the mud useless. I want to breathe with out filter but the air is poison. This is not war as told by the flyer and posters behind Mr. Joe’s pub. War was to between men like the knights of old. Whose escapades captivated me and encouraged me to destroy my toys for king and country. So when the war drums sounded I jumped to the call, leaving a young wife and a crying infant. Will I leave them? I thought I be back a hero some one to look up at not a statistic.

I want to go home and wake up from this dream, which is death. I want to go to work at the post office on this rainy Monday. Then get off from work and come into my house with the broken screen door, just in time for my favorite radio show the one with that old timely music. Then take a bath and go to sleep. I won’t have to kill or put on my mask or fear anything.  I fear my sleep will be sound however and no pinch will wake me.

I stay there in a daze for a long while. Remembering my life, what I liked about it what I didn’t. I think about you and what will it be after. Will there be tea and crumpets, family, friends, children, pets? What is it like, I feel you will soon tell me but until you do I will ponder. A casualties of world war two

reflection: This project was not hard for me but took allot of time to do. I think I work well in the project until the end. I use the core values because I learned about new things like how to use powerpoint and that google does not support voice. If I had to do my project again I would add more pic for a better grade. I did not enjoy this project because it did't have anything to do with what we were learning.

When words come to my head from the long lost plane of my imagination, I Write
When things need to be said that need undivided attention, I Write
To put my mark on the world to let people know I exist, I write
To remember keys that will open doors to my future, I write
When I write I force people to listen,
Written words do not bear any overtones ,
They can't change meaning,
They come to you intact, uncorrupted,
And bear as much felling as they did when you wrote them

khari evans costa rica

Posted by Khari Evans in English 2 - Pahomov on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 3:11 pm

                                                              Costa Rica

I felt the water rushing beneath our yellow raft as it bounced from rock to rock like a pinball hit by a devoted player. These were just one of the activities plan for my eighth grade trip to Costa Rica. This was my event and I loved it. First of all the day was “perfect,” after depleting my host house supply of corn flakes (The real breakfast of champions) our class” piled into an old van and headed of for the rapids.  I was the front paddle a position reserved for the strongest. I got to lead my crew threw the nooks and crannies the river. However the home trip would lead to me catching man’s greatest enemy the common cold.  Most kids see a cold as a neat way to get out of school and watch TV, but I see a cold as a day or two of my life wasted. Our school had fundraised for this event all year. We sold tacos, beans and rice, salads, pies, and other popular food every Wednesday. We got people to sponsor us. We started a small coffee Business. We even host a fundraising event with food prizes and a live band. SO I BE DAMMED IF I MISS A SINGLE DAY ON THIS TRIP! This was my mindset when a got a headache coming back from rafting.

Maybe I overreacted when I yelled at my fellow students

Or when I made my teacher cry

But, venting anger on others means I won’t go mad

When lying in bed with a temp of 105

Now I rarely get sick but when I do get sick it is usually takes me 3 to 4 days to recover, then a few more days to get back to myself. I always show the same signs when I get sick a continuous cough or/and sneeze, watery eyes and goose bumps. So when I developed a cough with goose bumps going up and down my arms. I knew I was sick, but I denied my classmates questions of  “are you ok” “ you don’t look good” with “I’m fine” for I although being a smart person convicted my self that if I did not act like I was sick, I would not be. But I was, for when going to one of our tour guides house I had to use the toilet to throw up in spite of my good acting of being well.

I had to be driven back to my host family’s house. They gave me Tylenol and sent me to bed. That night I tossed and turned in my bed when it hit me I had not taken off my shirt from the rafting trip; it was still damp from the river water. My body was not used to the water of Costa Rica (that’s why you don’t drink water form other countries)

Looking Back I could have acted better but I am me and I can’t always do every thing for other I learn how I react to when thing don’t go as plan and how to deal with it. I saw people who were try to help me as holding me back. I don’t like working with others always but some time I have to let someone help me.

I choose to use corn/bomb design to represent my element because it is uses in both crops, and bombs. I also added flames because my elements ability to burst into flames when it is exposed to air.
Based on its properties the backgrounds range from a sunny farm land to a fire in the dead of night. I am very happy with my plates, mostly negative appearance. However in the future I want to use a less labor intensive process.

NEGATIVE SPACE

Posted by Khari Evans in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 11:03 am
A. Negative space is when you draw the space around a object instead of the object itself.
B. 1)I found negative space in my cut out by cutting out the spaces around the spaces that made up my picture. 2) I found negative space in my stool drawing by drawing the space around the stools from my view.
C. A artist needs to see negative space because, it shows them how things work together.
D. Yes, because it help you with perspective and spacing.

PERSPECTIVE

Posted by Khari Evans on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 11:22 am
In this project we start from  little lines, than built on them until we had a model of the wall we where drawing. I when drawing used the center point to draw neat lines. The lights form a m with line come from it. Miss hall helped make my drawing better. it was easy to draw the line but hard to space them right.

The way she drew her light with thin light lines gave the affect the light was on.
