322x Website (viewing in school in next to impossible dude to the fact most of the content dwells on youtube)

For my senior capstone I created a website. This website will be used to put myself out there as a web developer as well as showcasing other projects I've worked on. Another component to my capstone was the making of at least one other website to be able to place on my website to showcase. I created a website for a fellow student’s company as well as my show case. The final component to my capstone was making a website for one of my school projects.

The Debt Movie Review

Posted by Kern Clarke in Digital Video -4 day a week - Herman on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 10:46 pm

"The Debt" was a wonderful film. The movie kept me very interested the entire time. It is one of the better drama-thriller movies that I've seen throughout my movie ventures. Though a little lengthy, "The Debt" was a very well paced film and it made those 2 hours go by relatively fast. I thought that the movie's plot was a very interesting one. The main plot of "The Debt" was based on a screen play written Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan. It is also a remake of a 2007 Israeli film also named "The Debt" by Assaf Bernstein. The movie is set up so that events from the past are retold that are directly related to the characters present day situation.

The film is about three spies that went on a mission in 1965 in East Berlin. The three spies were Rachel Singer played by Jessica Chastain,  David Peretz  played by Sam Worthington and Stefan Gold played by Marton Csokas. Their mission was to capture the nazi surgeon known as "The Surgeon of Birkenau", for his horrific experiments done on Jews during WWII, and bring him back to Israel to be put on trial for his crimes against humanity. Rachel and David posed as a married couple that have been struggling for the past 2 years to conceive a child but have failed, in order to get close to the doctor who now works in a clinic. Once the "ok" is given by the Israeli government to proceed with the mission the team makes their move on him.

The doctor is kidnapped by the three spies and they attempt to flee the country with his body via train but Rachel's face is seen and they miss the train so they are forced to seek refuge back at their hideout with the doctor. From their the movie has come fantastic dialogue pieces given by the doctor and the rest of the spies. One day the doctor is being fed by David and the former says something to piss him off, David then proceeds to break a ceramic plate across the doctors face and to beat him. After david is restrained by his teammates, piece of the ceramic plate is left behind and the doctor cuts himself loose. The house that they stay in is very old, it was raining and Rachel was putting out pots to catch water from leaks in the room. When Rachel goes to get more pots to catch the water from the leaks, the doctors sneaks up on her and injures her face and then escapes. The spies then agree to tell the rest of the world that while the doctor was trying to escape Rachel crawled and shot him in the back. The movie it basically all of the ramifications from them lying about the mission to the world.

In the movie there is a piano that is played Stefan all the time and this plays a very good role in reflecting on everyone's current mood. When Rachel does not know what to do and is crying Stefan gets on the piano and he plays music that one would usually associate with the emotion "sadness". A book of the spies' mission was written by Rachel's daughter, excerpts of the book have gotten read by both Rachel and her daughter both times it would lead back to a flashback of the 1965 mission, which worked very well because that first time they did it, it showed Rachel successfully killing the doctor as it was written in the book. Later in the movie though a flashback is had from Rachel's own mind and the truth is revealed. This was an excellent plot twist. I think the organization of the film itself was a very good one, and by having that story told through two different mediums that allowed for even more room for them to do that.

The set up for the movie can be seen as the first couple of scenes where it is made known that there was a mission and what had happened during. The first scene is one of the three spies coming home after the mission and being greeted by their countries officials. The first plot point is when the character David his modern day older self was about to go meet someone but instead jumps in front of a moving truck killing himself. This immediately should raise many questions. Act 2 begins when Stefan informs Rachel that David has now killed himself. From there a flashback of how the mission actually happened begins, during that time plot point 2 happens which would be the spies failing to escape the country with the doctor. Act 3 begins back is actual time when Stefan tells Rachel that David he found the doctor and he couldn't live with this life long lie which is why he killed himself. David is in a wheelchair so he tells Rachel that she needs to deal with the problem, meaning kill the doctor. Reluctant to do so at first she then leaves to go find the doctor in a nursing home. He finds her while she's there and she is stabbed two times by him but she was able to inject him with something that kills him. The aftermath of the film from the characters is that Rachel and David eventually realize that they cannot continue to lie to the world and that right thing to be done, is to tell the truth. Stefan however still has his world views from 30 years ago and still believes that they should continue to lie.

Mernia Recycling Industries

Kern Clarke & Markia Johnson

The product that we've created was "Mernia". It is a company that promotes recycling. The message that we try to convey is to get more people to recycle. Our intended audience is the entire human race, because we feel as though this is an issue that affects everyone no matter where you are from. We think this is an effective way to reach our audience because all of the print ads are very simple but yet they convey the message very quickly. We also covered most print ad mediums such as poster, billboard, and magazine. If I were to do this again the thing I would change would be the medium that was used to present this product. Not because this isn't a good one but because more can be done with another.

Protecting Civil Liberties in the Digital Age Documentary - Biello/McClendon/Clarke

Protecting Civil Liberties in the Digital Age Documentary

We choose this topic because we felt as thought it was the most relatable and the one that affects us the most. Also because it was a very modern problem. The thing that I liked about the project was using the different CSPAN footage. The thing that was most challenging was the placement of the CSPAN footage that we found. The most interesting fact that I investigated was that the school district has the authority to search through your phone. This project could be improved by us using more CSPAN footage. Also we could have had more interviews from adults.

We ran into trouble with this project when deciding which of the CSPAN footage we should use and where we should place them in the final video project. The thing that went well on this project were the interviews and the questions that we asked the interviewees. The lighting that we had was very good and the responses were good as well. If I had to do it over the thing that I would change about our decisions were the peoples age groups that we interviewed. I don't think that we got a broad enough spectrum of responses. I learned that the U.S. government could be potentially listening in on our phone conversations and our text communications.

Credit Suisse Securities V. Simmonds

Posted by Kern Clarke in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 12:23 pm

Argument Date: November 29, 2011

Weather the two-year time limit for bringing a lawsuit under section 16(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 is fined when the defendant has failed to comply with the disclosure requirements of Section 16(a). The constitutional issue is that does the 2 year limit in Section 16(b) of the 1934 Securities Exchange Act to file certain insider trading claims begin if the insider has not done what he is supposed to do under Section 16(a)?

Credit Suisse Securities is a company based out of Zurich, Switzerland. Their a bank that provides company loan for a wide range of clients. Vanessa Simmonds was an investor who owned tech stocks underwritten by Credit Suisse and several other investment banks. Simmonds alleges that the underwriter for the IPO's were in violation of insider trading laws by manipulating stock prices with short-swing transactions. IPO stands for Initial Public Offerings which is the first sale of stock from a private company to the general public.

According to what has happened during the case argument, the court does not agree with either side of the argument. Most of the articles I've read reporting out on what happened during the argument are saying that when a decision is made it will most likely not side with wither party but instead find a middle ground in which no one's argument is fully supported. But it might also lead to systems put into place to prevent this from happening in the future once again.

Income Taxes Flow Chart <---- link to our join

By: Kern Clarke & Blase Biello

The task that was selected for the Bureaucracy Project was the individual tax return process. We did all the way from getting the actual forms to mailing them out after their finished. Our process started with obtaining the required forms in order to complete this process. These form could be obtained online, by phone, or in person at a local IRS office. The forms that were needed in order to complete this process were the 1040 tax return forms. Next they began to fill out the form  based on filing status, any household exemptions and then afterwards they filled out the rest of the information required by following the instruction manual that comes along with the 1040.

At first the paperwork seemed easy. Thats because everything we needed to fill out at the top was just information regarding the persons identity. After the first part we had to refer to the instruction manual for about every new section that was introduced. There were words I've never ever heard before and I needed to look them up in order to move on with the rest fo the form. If I could change one thing about the bureaucratic process that I flow charted I would probably change having to do different forms if you ha income come in from a certain place or from a certain process. This can be extremely tedious having to constantly refer to other forms that you hace filled out in order to complete the one that you are doing right now.

I think that the systems have become so complicated because as time progressed the government began to see many different scenarios in which someones income situation was not included on the form so they tried their best to cover almost all different types on the spectrum. Overall I thought that this project was a very learning process because most if not all of the processes that were done for this project someone in our classrooms will have to go through one day and this is a great way for us to get properly acquainted with the process beforehand.

Kern Clarke - Lobbying Blog Post #3

While there hasn't been an official policy regarding my lobbying topic. There have been many strides to keep that from having to happen. Such as the formation of many different committees and departments that are prepared to deal with the current issues with a short term fix.

The allies that are needed in order to help move this issue are people such as the city council members from the respective parts of Philadelphia that are mainly being represented which are most because only Center City isn't being represented. It will also be very helpful if the person in charge of the streets department is Clarena I. W. Tolson was an ally because she is in charge of most clean up projects that happen in the city of Philadelphia, and has a very large following when it comes too those kinds of things.

The main organizations that are working on this issue are organizations such as the PMBC (Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee) and the City Of Philadelphia Streets Department. The Philadelphia streets department are the ones in charge with everything having to do with the streets of Philadelphia. The Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee are a committee are a part of the Streets Department's Sanitation Division. They were formed specifically to allow residents of neighborhoods to take action and organize block cleanings.

There are many ways to get them to assist me in my lobbying but not directly. For example the have an online request form for traffic control signs. They also have their very own hotline that deals with requesting "curb your dog", and "no littering" signs. They make you contact the PMBC.

I choose this bill because it was related to a previous benchmark I had done for another class. The previous benchmark was about the atomic bombs dropped on Japan cities. I choose this particular presentation format because I am very familiar with Prezi and it is very easy to work with. The challenges that I had to overcome for completing this project are that I had to pick something to decide to do my project on. I couldn't decide between the atomic energy act or something that related to my life such act the computer safety act. If I did this project over again the thing that I would do different is the presentation medium that I chose to present this project in. I would change that because Prezi's are honestly kind of played out and I could of possibly put together a website for this project. The research and investigation told me that the creation process demo idea to law was greatly influenced by the events of WWII.This process was easier than I had imagined based on my particular bill because this was a very significant bill that was passed and has been documented in many different ways and places.

Lobbying - Curb your dog & Waste Bins

Posted by Kern Clarke in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 9:57 am

No one enjoys going for a walk and then noticing that the streets are littered with trash or people refuse to clean up after their pets. If you were in Center City however this would never happen. There are many things already in place that would lower the chances of you seeing these nuisances. First there are trash cans in Center City virtually on every street corner. Secondly their are "please curb your dog" signs posted up all over every park and trails. These are both due to the face that when tourists come to visit Philadelphia most of the traffic is in the Center City area, which requires us to keep these parts especially clean.

I would propose that "please curb your dog" and public trash bins be of greater for the other parts of the city also. In most parts of the city outside of Center City there is trash on the streets in great abundance. This is because there aren't public trash cans on the corners of those parts of the city. Also the "please curb you dog" law isn't enforced at all so animal droppings are on people's lawn and on private property. I would very much like to see cleaner streets in Philadelphia. I also want to see tourism not only be mainly concentrated in Center City but in other parts that make up philadelphia as well, and I feel as though cleaning up the streets is a very good place to start.

The main people I can get support from while trying to get these enforced or enacted would be the district representatives of the different parts of the city. They would be the main supporters because they would like the thought of having cleaner streets and improving on tourism. Even though I can get the most support from them they can also give me the most opposition. Placing a trash can on street corners isn't a very cheap tasks. Especially managing the trash pickup. If there isn't room in the budget to pay for this then they may not even consider it.

Currently there isn't any legislation dealing with my topic. But I would like to see one regarding the enforcement of people not cleaning up after their dogs. There are already laws in place that say that it is illegal to not clean up after your pets but there isn't anything regarding the enforcement of that law.

Law referencing not cleaning up after animals.

(Amending Chapter 10-100 of The Philadelphia Code, entitled "Animals," by amending Section 10-105, entitled "Animals Committing Nuisances," by expanding the section to include nuisances committed upon the private property of the owner and animal noises which cause unreasonable annoyance, disturbance or discomfort to a person or persons, all under certain terms and conditions.

Acoustic Guitar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsD6uEZsIsU

Acoustic Guitars are played by strumming up and down various strings that produce different sounds. You change the notes by placing your other hand along the top of the string on the metal bars that are called frets. An Acoustic Guitar is shaped like a number eight that is hollow and only has one hole in it which is located at the bottom. When the strings are strummed the sound travels down them into the hollow eight shaped part and the sound bounces off the walls of it to produce a much better sound. Above the base of it there is a long bar like object which has all of the string attached to it and runs all the way from the top to the bottom of the number eight shaped base. This makes me think that I would need something that is very good acoustics and is able to let sound move freely in it. A connection that can be made with what I already know about waves is that as the sound bounces off the inside of the guitar the sounds waves slowly dissipate jus as the energy from the slinky did.

BOOM! (The Manhattan Project) - NHD

Posted by Kern Clarke in American History - Herman on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 6:59 pm
The topic in which I chose for my National History Day project was the "Manhattan Project". I became interested in the Manhattan Project after I found out it was responsible for the production of the first nuclear weapons. Those weapons were later used to end a war instantly and at the same time destroy over 90,000 innocent lives. I chose this topic because I hadn't done any previous research on the topic and I was really anxious to learn how it had come about.

The way I conducted my research was by first finding my sources. I took my time and looked for some very useful primary sources, I also did the same with my secondary sources. I conducted my research by first researching every body who was involved with my topic. I knew that if i wanted to fully understand this information, I was going to need some good background information and I thought that information on the people involved was a good place to start. Next I started to do some basic research on what the actual "Manhattan Project" was. I got some basic facts including dates, and people involved.

I selected the presentation category "Documentary" due to a couple reasons. The first major reason is that I consider myself very talented when it comes to video editing and creation so I felt ver comfortable choosing this category. Another reason is because I worked alone I believed that this allowed me to work more efficiently. I created my project using the video editing software known as iMovie. I also compensated for not being able to do a good voiceover by recording the spoken voice of the computer. I created my documentary as though it was a timeline and displayed everything in order in which it occurred.

My project relates to the NHD theme of "Debate & Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, Consequences" because at first the use of radioactive elements was considered in creating a new energy source. It quickly jumped from something peaceful to a weapon of mass destruction. I believe that this is one of the most important projects undertaken by the American government in modern history and that end result is one of the most significant events also. There were many conflicts as too weather or not these weapons should be developed, a mass number of civilian support against its development.
