Khalil Clark Capstone

Khalil Clark

Ms. Dunn (Mentor)

ABSTRACT:

My capstone was done on H.I.V. (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). This project was designed behind someone close to me after they were diagnosed with this virus. I was influenced to take this topic, and further my knowledge. My plan is to inform others about H.I.V. because it is a wide spread epidemic, and not many people are informed about the damage this disease can leave on a person. Although I jumped around this year with trying to settle down on one idea, I decided that H.I.V. would be a more successful topic. I am very passionate in becoming an advocate for others dealing with this virus, or those who are friends of people with the virus.

September 11 Shorts

Posted by Khalil Clark in Digital Video -Senior - Herman on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 9:27 am
After watching the different short films from class, I mixed with different emotions. In the film with the little kids who seemed so innocent in the beginning, this has a reoccurring theme of death. The kids seemed comfortable with the fact that people die extremely often where they live. Most kids around the age of the children in the film have a hard time understanding death at such a young age. The teacher in the film wanted the students to understand something larger than just death. When the attacks on the US happened September 11, 2001, those kids obviously had no idea what was going on. It took some time to get them to understand what had happened. I was 6 years old in the first grade, and had no idea why I was being sent home early.

Observing the film about the deaf couple was different. The absence of silence added more dramatic effect to what was going on between the two. After the argument the couple had, the guy storms out. The female starts writing a journal on the computer about the things that are driving this couple to breaking up. The entire time the tv is on tuned into the news, and the news is reporting what is happening to the Twin Towers (World Trade Center). Because of the fact the female was deaf, she had no idea what was going on until the room around her starts shaking, then her boyfriend shows up covered in ash. When the female opened the door, and I saw her boyfriend standing there, I was amazed. Knowing what was going on in New York that day, would have lead me to think the police was showing up at the door to report the boyfriend's death. The film took a turn, and fooled me. All of the films were mind blowing, but those two were the ones that stuck with me the most. If I was the age I am now at the time, I would love to know how everything would have a different affect on me.

What did you learn from doing this project?
Doing this project helped me learn more about subject/verb agreement in spanish, and different tenses of verbs when conjugating them. I also learned more about relationships and how to describe your partner/spouse in spanish.

How do you feel about your final product?

I feel good about the work my group and I presented to the room. Although I don't like hearing myself recorded, I believe we all did an awesome job.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?

If I had the opportunity to do this project over again, I will change the tone of my voice so I wouldn't have to hear myself when I listen to my work. I would definitely keep the script the same because it was hilarious. Other than that I wouldn't do anything to the project.

This I Believe: Sexuality is Based off Attraction

Posted by Khalil Clark in English 3 - Pahomov on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 9:31 am
I believe that from the time you have enough common sense to know the difference between gender's, you develop an attraction to one or the other sex, or both. No one ever thinks about when people choose to be straight. Everyone thinks that it's a choice to be gay, bisexual, lesbian, or transgender. It's not a choice, or something you know within the heart and mind of a person. If it's a choice to like the same sex, then it must be a choice to like the opposite sex.

From the time I was a little kid, I've always felt an attraction to the opposite and same sex. I've grown up and came to terms with the correct terminology, and what it means to be Bisexual, I realized I never made a choice. I just knew I was. It comes from the belief that god has our life planned out for us before we are born. Obviously he choose for me to be this way, so I'm not gonna change it because I like the way I am.

I believe that the world should be accepting of LGBT people. Judging us won't change our sexual orientation, and physically abusing us won't change it either. Grow up and move on. If you don;t support us, get on with your life. Life goes on and doesn't revolve around you, so get over yourself.

I'm growing up and I have a new attitude about life. I'm moving forward, and no one can change me.

Save Me...911

Posted by Khalil Clark in World History - Block on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 2:58 pm
My monologue is about the wars in Darfur, Sudan. The people in the country have it hard because they don't know if they'll be another death victim, so they fight for their lives. The government is corrupt. The president if Sudan, Omar al-Bashir does nothing to benefit his country. He contributes to the problems going on there. This war has been going on for years between north and south Sudan. It's only a matter of time before they get help.

Cast:

Villager

Act I, Scence I

Abkar

As I sit here in my village and watch my family sleep, I wonder if I’ll see them tomorrow. Everyday I’m fighting for my life, and I don’t know if I will live to see another day so I make the best of what I have. I run for duck and cover to prevent being seen by one of the Janjaweed men. If they saw me God knows what could happen. I feel like I’m being held hostage in my own country fighting for the right to live.

"Is Philly Next"

Posted by Khalil Clark in World History - Block on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 9:22 am
“Is Philly Next?

Pow! Pow! Pow! Gun shoots rang in the East Wing of the school building. For the past 50 years, school shootings have happened all over the US. The first shooting was reported in 1966 at the University of Texas. By the end of the shooting, there were 16 victims. What inside gets people so angry that they want to shoot their peers? People are bullied almost every second of the day, but to open fire on people at school is no excuse. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

In some cases, these shootings are accidents. People might carry the firearms for protection because they live in really horrible neighborhoods. When that happens  some students carry the guns in the backpacks, resulting in the gun discharging when the student sits their bag down. If that happens clearly the student did not intend on anyone in school getting hurt. This happened at Gardena High School in Los Angeles, CA. This is the most recent school shooting in the US taking place on January 8, 2011. The firearm was in the 17-year-old childs book bag when it went off. This left 2 students wounded, and now the teen is being tried as an adult for assault with a deadly weapon. He has a history of being bullied so he carried the gun for that, but had no intentions on using it in school.

The city of Los Angeles as a large community can’t watch every student in each school. On the other hand they can get their school security system together. A school official said that over 3000 students attend Gardena High School. The security there uses a handheld metal detector on each student as they enter the school building, so it is very easy for a student to slip pass security with a weapon. Assuming this a pretty large building, there will be multiple entrances to the building. Therefore there should be security with handheld metal detectors on each entrance so it is much easier to catch a student with a weapon.

Is Philly next? With all the shootings we have outside of school for fights that happen in school, you never know. One day someone is going to walk into a Philadelphia high school and open fire. So far there has been 4 school shootings in the state of Pennsylvania. There’s only a matter of time before the fifth one happens, and no one knows where in Pennsylvania it will be.

Some TV shows base episodes on school violence, and some movies are based on school violence. They want to express the fact that you shouldn’t bully people, shoot up your school, and commit random acts of violence in school. They want to keep things like that out of the school community. Now that doesn’t mean it’s ok to go outside and do the same thing. It’s not ok, and it can lead you down the wrong road in life.

The US is supposed to be the land of the free. It can be that when you have people shooting each other in school, or bullying one another, or even cursing each other out. Not everyone is going to get along, but when you meet someone new, get to know him or her first because they might being going through the same things as you. If you don’t take the initiative to do that, it shows how much of a coward you are. You’re not fooling anyone but yourself.

School shootings are 100% preventable because the person getting ready to blast the school can make the decision to stop and walk away. It’s just a matter of if that person cares enough to. If you are a victim or suspect of school violence then you need to talk to someone and get immediate counseling. No one ever wants to be the one getting picked on, but it happens and life goes on. It takes one person to be that change, so why not be them?

Thank You,
Khalil Clark

Khalil Clark Marking Period 1

Posted by Khalil Clark in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, November 8, 2010 at 1:24 pm
When starting this project I didn't have any clue of what recycled material I would use to make a project. Every time my parents go shopping they bring back plasti bags and put them under the sink and don't use them. Since I knew that I liked messenger bags because I get frustrated carrying backpacks, I decided I would use plastic bags to make a messenger bag.

After coming up with an idea I researched different ways you can make a messenger bag out of plastic bags. When I started working on the bag I realized that sewing everything by hand would take a really long time because I don't have a sewing machine. Therefore I changed my idea to making a laptop case out of plastic bags a an old non-hooded sweatshirt. I used what I had from the messenger bag and add on more bags if it needed to be bigger. After looking at the design of this I realized I didn't want to do this either.

Now I am back to the idea of making a messenger bag out of plastic bags, but with a different take on this. I decided that I will fuse the bags together using an iron and wax paper the same way I would for the laptop case or the first messenger bag I was going to make. After fusing them together I will take a hot glue gun and join the bags together, then cut and finish joining the rest of the bag together. Once I'm done making the bag design I will sew on a strap and hot glue a bag flap on to the bag.
