The unsung heros

Posted by Kaya Armstrong on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 12:07 pm

For My Capstone, I recreated some of Debbie Allen and Alvin Ailey’s iconic photos as well as some of their self-portraits. I did a photoshoot with my classmate to show appreciation for these black dance pioneers. I tried to capture the same lighting in some of the photos and facial expressions that they did. Black creators have been the trendsetter for many things but never really get the credit they deserve. In the dance world, there has been a lot of discrimination toward Black people. Companies like Alvin Ailey’s American Dance theater and Debbie Allen Dance academy are black dance companies that celebrate black dancers. I want to show appreciation to these companies and to black dance styles. I was inspired to do this project because I’ve always loved dance and have always had so much respect for the people in the dance community.
