Reflection

The most challenging thing about this project was actually coming up with what I wanted to do. I didn't know where and what I wanted to do until the example was given to us in class. I thought about how the media always reflects on the bad things that teenagers do in Philadelphia and how they never talk about all the good they do. I wanted to make a change to that and wanted to cover a story on two teenagers in Philadelphia and talk about how successful they are. Another challenging part about this project was actually having the time to find people who would be willing to get interviewed.

I found this story by my looking into my friends and seeing how successful they are. I asked for their stories to be shared for my final project and they were honored to share their stories. I don't think these kinds of stories receive a lot of attention because the bad things that teenagers do in Philadelphia outweigh the good things that they do. I don't think the story will get more attention because teenagers have always done good things but in the news its mostly for the viewers to see all the bad things that are happening in the area. Throughout this project I learned that their are many teenagers in Philadelphia being successful and its a shame that they are no't being noticed as they should be.

Working Up A Sweat

Posted by Johnathan Neris on Friday, May 25, 2012 at 2:15 pm

For my senior capstone project I wanted to better myself for the future. I wanted to become a healthier person and learn about different nutrition diets. I had to come up with an exercise method and try to go on a diet. There was a website that I used which helped me keep track of what I ate. I also set up different dates and time that I went to work out. I tried to work out at least 3 times a week and I would switch up my routine in my work out every two-weeks. I switched up my routine because if I was to keep the same workout my body would get used to the work out and I wouldn’t be doing anything to it. I also had to cut back on the fast food, it wasn’t easy but I did very well cutting back on Chinese food, McDonalds, Burger King, and even pizza.

Q3 Benchmark: Serbia and Peru

Posted by Johnathan Neris in Globalization - Laufenberg on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 2:45 pm

For the quarter 3 benchmark, the countries I chose were Serbia and Peru. They're both similar and different in a lot of ways. Serbia and Peru both are friendly and good trading partners in the industry. They both also suffer from water pollution and mining problems. Something interesting but also shocking was that the waste in Serbia has increased from 68,000 tons to 176,00o tons in only 7 years. An interesting fact about Peru would be that the country isn't hostile with other countries but inside of Peru there's so much violence and the system is so corrupted.

The process for my project was a little complicated. It was complicated because the information was hard to gather. The first thing that I did was get all of my information for Serbia after that was done i got all of the information for Peru. After I got all of the information that I needed I got the pictures and started the google doc presentation format. I then laid out how i wanted my presentation to look and began to assemble it.

The 5 point framework was difficult to find in my opinion. I had to really dig into websites to even get a good sense of what something was talking about. It was also hard because there isn't a lot of information on Serbia. I got all of the information that was needed but it was not an easy process to me. It made me think and spend a little bit more time then I wanted to gathering the information for the 5 point framework.

If I could change my project, I would probably make a video. I would probably make a video because it might keep peoples interest more but then I thought about all the information that would have to be on it and I didn't know how to make it come across people with out having a whole lot of words on the video and people having to read it. That's why I chose to do a Google Doc Presentation. I thought that would be acceptable to have all the information on a slide and I got to design each one with pictures that went with the topic of the slide.

Some feedback would be to have different check points for the project. I thought that since I had the twelve days i would leave it and start it the week before it was do. I didn't think about all the other work that I was getting and I fell behind with the project. I think that check point would help me be more organized and help keep me on track. Other then that I found out some good information on Serbia and Peru.

World of 100 Analysis

Posted by Johnathan Neris in Globalization - Laufenberg on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 9:32 am

The categories that were most accurate were the ones for my ages. For the ages the correct answer for 0-14 yrs was 26 and I put 30. The ages 15-64 was the correct answer was 66 and I out 50 which isn't so close. And for the final 65 and older the correct one was 8 and I put 20. The other chart for the technology I was completely off. For example I put for the people who are subscribed to to cell phones would be 90 and the correct answer was 75. I put that because since where in the 21 century people would be already know to that and would have electronics. Also with that I was off by all the other categories.

The people that will own computer shocked me the most. They had only 22 people would have computers when I put at least 80 people.

I was off on the electronics because I thought that everyone would have some type of technology but then I remembered this was for 100 people in the world so not everyone is exposed to technology in the world. I didn't have a spot on one but I was really close to the different ages.

Quarter 2 BM. 14th Amendment

Posted by Johnathan Neris in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 8:42 pm
Reflection

For my second American Government benchmark, I inquired on a topic that I knew of but also wanted to learn more about. I tied together the 14th amendment and how it relates to the LGBT community. I really liked that this project was very open to anything and let me be creative. I also liked how we got to be free with which way we wanted to on about this project. One of the more challenging parts of the project was how to start out and how would I get my message across to the audience. I also found it hard to get good footage that went all together and messing with iMoive to make it all come out looking good and not like a bunch of videos smashed together.

The most interesting fact was that stood out to me was that ninety percent of the gay and lesbian youth reported being bullied from middle school through out high school. My C-Span video also had some interesting facts as well and how they could end the bulling though out the world. Sherrod Brown was the spokes person and brought up some good points in the C-Span, which I also put into my video. I think that I could improve my project by using more people, such as adults since I only used pre-teens and teenagers. Another way this project can be improved would be by using less C-Span footage and more different videos that connect to my topic.

During this project I ran into a couple of problems one being trying to make all of the videos I chopped up sound the same with the volume adjustments. It was hard trying to take all of these different clips and making them have the same volume with out having to cut the videos into tiny pieces. A second problem that I had with the project was uploading it, I uploaded the video to three different places, SchoolTube, Youtube, and I tried TeacherTube. I didn’t know that I had to wait for my video to be accepted by the administrator first. I think me working by myself went well. I got to mange my own time and I didn’t have to rely on anyone else to get their work done. If I had to do this project over I would try and get my video done faster so when the deadline was coming up I could just get it reviewed all the time and not worry on the last day about uploading it. I learned that this was the fastest movement in the nation and is still growing till this day.

Scotus Blog: Reynolds v. United States

Posted by Johnathan Neris in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 8:59 am
In the Reynolds vs. United States the issue was about sex offender registration an d notification Act (SORNA) which congress enacted in 2006. This law was designed to create a nationwide system to keep track of all different sex offenders that committed crimes in the past. When congress decided to do this they hoped to prevent a situation in which a sex offenders convicted in one location could then move to another state another state, where neither police nor his new neighbors would he aware of their history if they were registered sex offenders.

In 2001 Billy Joe Reynolds was convicted of a sex crime in Missouri and served four years in prison. Then when he was released, he registered as a sex offender in Missouri, but he didn't  do it with authorities in Pennsylvania when he moved there in 2007. A couple of months later Reynolds was charged with violating SORNA's requirements. When he went to go argue his case in the lower court they refused to even consider his challenge.  Now Reynolds is being held in violation of the federal constitution. The court was divided on that issue. The U.S. Solicitor General urged the Court to deny review of Reynolds' petition.

Blog Post #4: Curfrews

Posted by Johnathan Neris in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 9:12 pm
Since I am working with the curfew scene in Philadelphia, I needed something or someone that would help me with lobbying this problem. Overall the main point is to try and get the law switched for 17 year olds to be out later then ten at night. To have this happen I need to get the council members of Philadelphia to join me and this lobbying quest. I will be doing various things to try and get this done, for example I will be sending the council members emails about different facts on why the age restriction should be brought down to 17 and older. Then I can also sign up for a membership with NYRA who also will help me promote my case on curfews.

Screen Shot 2011-12-20 at 10.01.24 PM

After I am done with those emails to the council I plan on getting teenagers who are 17 and work to sing a potation that shows that they work. This can help in a lot of ways because if get enough people to sing this potation maybe something will be changed in the law. I also plan on getting a rally of Philadelphia residents to come out and protest against this law since the money can be going to something else, such as after school programs. Also if you want to be a member and fight for your rights sign up here.

Marriage Application Flow Chart: Amaris & John

MarriageAppliction

Reflection

For our task we had to do the process of marriage in Philadelphia. In our flow chart we went through each step on how to get married in Philadelphia. The first few steps were simple, but then it has its ups and downs and being to get complex. We started with out simple steps from first finding your true love to and if you wanted to get married, then through out the chart we have you read through various things and we add little notes that you have to do. For example in the chart there's a part where you have to stop and read for a note and it says "Note #1: You need to pay $80.00 for the marriage license" and then we also added a different note below it it saying "Note #2: You can't pay by credit cards or check. If someone was to get married or wanted to they could use this process to get married in Philadelphia.

If you look at out flow chart above you can see that its not very hard to follow. We worded the different points simple so that anyone could be able to follow it. The paper work process wasn't that hard to deal with. It was only one sheet and all you had to do was  fill out the information on who we were. It was very straightforward asking for where we lived, when were we born, what were our parents names, and additional information. Since it was only one sheet it didn't take long to get finished.

If there was one thing that I could change our project it would be the formatting on how we laid our chart out. I feel as though if someone is using it and they get distracted they will lose their spot. If this was done differently we could maybe have the chart going up and down in a curve. I feel as though if its like that then you would actually know how the chart flows and not just see lines pointing in different directions to follow a process. I don't think that our system for the marriage process is complicated at all. Its very easy and straight forward to go along with. If you're reading our flow chat make sure to take your time and go through every step, you could find yourself getting lost and confused if you don't read carefully. Overall I feel as though our flow chart is very easy to follow and a good process to follow if you and your partner want to get married. This project was really cool to do and I would do it again if we had a choice to, I will use this in the future hopefully. I thought this project was very helpful to newly weds.

Lobbying Post 3: Curfew

Posted by Johnathan Neris in American Government - Laufenberg on Monday, November 28, 2011 at 9:03 pm
For this new Philadelphia Law of the curfew a lot of people are going along with it. I feel as though this would be a good year because not only will it clear the streets at night but it will also decrease the vandalism in the city during Friday nights when kids don't have school the next day. All of the elected officels have induced their support for the issue except for one. There's a mixture of mixed emotions on this new law, for example the deputy Everett Gillison talks about how this would be good for the public he says "If there's a time that a kid is out at a certain time and a officer spots them they will be asked for identification and if there's a problem that the officers will be entitled to do what they have to." Then there are the people who don't believe this curfew should be past as a law. For example  Jim Lynam the 76ers' coach says "I'm not a curfew guy and I never had curfews with my kids." Over all a high percentage of people are for the law and over power the people who don't want to turn this into a law, but the people who aren't for it still have a say in the law. The media has a big part to do with this, for example the more that people see these vicious teens the more they want the law to take place. The message that the people see is to try and keep kids off the streets and when this law starts off it will be a decrease in kids in Philadelphia who will be out late at night.

The stakeholder who's trying to fix this problem is Mayor Nutter. He can't do it alone he also need the help of the citizens. Addressing the parents to make sure where their child is and what their up to.  Not only is the Mayor the only person trying to make this law work but also the citizens of Philadelphia as well. For example Tyrone Werts is a Philadelphia citizen and he stood a long side the police officers in center city trying to keeps kids off of the streets. He says "I wanted to get involved in the world and make a different to the youth." The Allies that need to be on board would have to be the different  citizens in Philadelphia, with out their help, probably nothing will change. Then we have the protesters. In this video a group of people shout "We need schools, not the curfew!" Another stakeholder would be the National Youth Rights Association. This is an organization that support the no curfew for youth. The one council member that didn't agree to go along with the law would prob ably have something to do with being involved with this organization.

Science BM1: Food

Posted by Johnathan Neris in Science and Society - Best on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 11:43 am
Reflection

During the first half of this Science & Society class I have learned so much about food. In the beginning of the unit I remember learning about different food labels and terms. For example when we looked at what Mr. Best had for dinner one night and he ate a veggie burger, the labels listed on the box said that this product was all natural, no cholesterol, reduced sodium, low saturated fat, and has no trans fat. It was all about learning what these different terms meant. A different assignment that we did in the food unit was reading the organic food article. We learned more about organic food and how some of the articles can be seen as bias. Then we learned about the Food Inc., which really opened my eyes to everything. It showed how bad these conditions are for the animals and the people in the slaughterhouses were. I’ve learned so much about that movie such as how people could get arrested if they stole plant seeds and how they weren’t allowed to talk about what was going on cause they could go to jail. It was a very informative movie but also very sad to know what is actually going on in this food industry. Anther assignment we did in the unit opened my eyes to see which place was better to shop from. When we did the supermarket assignment I learned that the supermarket I go to has a lot of organic food for a cheap price then other places. A more recent thing that we learned about was the western diet reading that we did in class. We compared the western diet and having diabetes together. During the diabetes chapter we learned a lot of new terms and how they work. For example we learned that Type 1 (also called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes) is caused by a lack of insulin and that Type 2 (also called adult-onset diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes) occurs when the body does not respond or can't use its own insulin (insulin resistance). Something else I learned was that gestational diabetes is the result of some hormonal changes that occur in all women during pregnancy. Another thing I learned was that glucose is a sugar that provides energy to all of the cells in your body. The chemical formula is to this is C6H12O6. My role in the larger food system is to buy food; at least that’s what I believe. The biggest problem in the food system is the conditions all of our food is going through for example the slaughterhouses. The animals and people are being mistreated. I could go a bit healthier buy going to organic food markets. The impact of these decisions would be that now I know what happens to my food before I get it, it makes me not want to eat it anymore. I am willing to make changes but it doesn’t happen over night so it will probably take some time.

Recipe and Analysis

Macaroni Salad

Recipe:

Macaroni – Whole box
◦
Vegetable oil – 2 caps
◦ Salt – 1tbs.
◦
Butter – 1 TBSP.
◦
Parsley Pereil – a lil bit on your palm
◦
Turkey Ham – A Whole Slice Of Turkey Ham Cut Up
◦
Bacon Pieces: Bacon Flavored Bites – a lil bit on your palm
◦
Peas - Half Of A Can
◦
Dry White Cooking Wine – 4 Drops

Steps On How It Was Made:

1.    Stir macaroni into 6 cups boiling water

2.    1 tsp. of salt into the pot

3.    Boil rapidly 7 to 10 minuets or until macaroni is tender

4.    Drain the macaroni

5.    Put it into a bowl (or wherever you want to put it at)

6.    Grabbed 1 slice of turkey ham

7.    Sliced the ham into little boxes

8.    Put it into the salad

 9.    Pour 2 caps of vegetable oil

10.    1 TBSP. of butter

11.    Mix it up

12.    Pour some parsley into the bowl, doesn’t matter how much you pour but what I did was I shacked it once or twice so that it can have some type of taste to it

13.    Same with the bacon pieces, you can pour how much you want into your salad but I shacked it a little once or twice so that it can have flavor

14.    Pour half of a can of peas

15.    4 Drops of white wine

16.    MIX IT ALL UP & you’ll get a macaroni salad

Most of the Macaroni salad was very healthy for us. For example it had peas and turkey ham with Macaroni. A good 80 percent of the food was processed. Nothing was really made by us the ingredients were already made for us we just put it all together. When we calculated all of the calories it came up to be 273 calories with all the items. Our body would most likely get full with eating just this macaroni salad but that's if you had a lot, but usually this is like a side dish to go along with some rice and some sort of meat. There wouldn't be any issues with you eating this everyday, I'm just not sure you would want to eat this everyday cause it can get very annoying just eating mostly peas everyday. I said that because the salad mostly consists of peas. All the ingredients are from the USA. This salad would cost about $5.99 also adding all of the side ingredients. Kraft made money off of this meal because we used the Macroni from the Kraft Company and Green Giant also made money off of us as well since we used their companies’ peas. Those are the main items that we used for this salad.

NCLB Act Presentation- Prezi

Posted by Johnathan Neris in American Government - Laufenberg on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 2:55 pm
Reflection

The reasoning for picking the NCLB Act was because I've heard about it before in middle school but never really knew what it was. I wanted to educate myself on what this act was about and how it worked. There were so many things that I knew about but didn't completely know what it was about. For example I remember hearing about AYP which means "Adequate Yearly Progress." All AYP basically means is setting a goal for example get more then 23% of the students in elementary school to score proficient or higher. Usually they use AYP for PSSA's. I decided to do my presentation using a Prezi format because I felt as though it would let me present my information in a very creative way. I also did my prevention in this format because it wouldn't be as the traditional powerpoint or boring.

Some challenges that I ran into during the process of this project was trying to put up the information on the Prezi in a creative and not boring way. Another challenge was trying to upload the Prezi so that it would play on the blog. There was code that needed to embedded into the blog which I found after about fifteen minutes of playing around with Prezi. There aren't many ways I would change my project, but if I had to I would add more pictures. I think that pictures give it a little push, and it wouldn't look so dull.

I researched a lot on why this act was made. I found out that they created this act because they seen a big percent of colored kissed who seemed not to be getting the right education. Basically they wanted all kids to achieve so they created this act and ever since they did they seen the number of kids getting below basic has dropped. The NCLB act wasn't as hard to research since this law was created around 2001 and all the information was available on the internet.

Blog Post #2: Curfew

Representative: Maria D. Quinones-Sanchez
MQS-wikipx-rvr
Maria is a very outstanding women in my point of view. She was born on November 21st in Philadelphia, PA. The 7th district is represented by her and what she does. She's been in office since 2008 and will stay in office until 2012. Out of the office she is a wife and a mother with two kids. In the November 6th election of 2007 she had a whopping number of votes with 80% of them. Out of all of the district representatives, Maria is the youngest one. Not only known for the reduced crime rates by her but also the increase in the economic opportunity, she has accomplished amazing achievements.

When the whole "Curfew law" was being put into action, Maria was all in for it. She wasn't going to fight against it because she knew this would help not only in the city but also around the 7th district as well. Even though I don't agree with her and the whole curfew, I do believe she is doing it for the right reason. Maria and I are similar in different ways, for example we're both Latinos and making a different in the world. I say that we're both making a difference in the world because when she's doing work around the city, I am as well with my community service.

Philadelphia Curfew

Posted by Johnathan Neris in American Government - Laufenberg on Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 10:58 pm
I am lobbying against the age restriction of curfew in Philadelphia. I feel as though the ages should not be under 18 because that affects a lot of teenagers that do have jobs out there. For example all of the 17 year old that have jobs out there and are done at 11 pm at night or later.
I want to investigate on this a little more because I feel as though its not right and since one group of kids wanted to cause a ruckus not everyone should have to suffer for their actions. I feel as the the age should be 17 for the curfew because not only are 17 year olds working but they are also young adults. I feel as though if I was to bring this up to someone and continued to try and make these changes I would have a good amount of supports, not only the teens that work late at night, but also parents of these kids. I don't feel as though teenagers should be penalized for the mistake of a group of teenagers who have nothing to do better with their lives but cause ruckus.
A lot of people might think that I am foolish for trying to bring the age down for these teenagers but I feel as though nowadays seventeen year olds should know their right from wrong. That's why I was stating that they would at least give it a try and trust that these teenagers in Philadelphia wouldn't make me regret trying to change the age for them. If this was to be changed and these teens were still disobeying the law that their would be precautions. That's one thing that I completely agree with the curfew law, and that's the punishments that kids and teens would get if they broke the rule. For example if this law was to be broken by a child or yours for example you, the parent would be fined with a bill. It states that if the law was broken parents can face a fine up to $500. Now that should make parents more informed on how serious this law is being taken.

Quién eres tú?

Soy Gonzalo Infante. No tengo muchos amigos. Ello gritaron y lucharon. Yo estaba allí mientras todo pasaba. I mama me llamó, pero yo decidí corre.

All the Time Everywhere

Objectively

Rafael Ferrer

Posted by Johnathan Neris in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 9:23 pm
