Moonlight with a Wes Anderson Twist

For our project, we decided to recreate scenes from the movie “Moonlight” using the film and style techniques of director, Wes Anderson. Anderson is an indie movie director who’s most well known movies include “Isle of Dogs”, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “Moonrise Kingdom”. Throughout all of his movies, Anderson’s directing style stands out very vibrantly in tone and theatrics. Some recurring cinematographic elements of Anderson’s style include tracking shots, zoom, profile shots, symmetrical framing, overhead shots and whip pans. Some of Anderson’s theatrical elements include warm and cool color palettes, non-diegetic plinking harpsichord music, one or more childish adult characters, smoking, characters explaining elaborate plans, action, violence, stylish attire, foreigners, a vintage/ old timey aesthetic, shots of writing, and an assortment of recurring actors and actresses. We chose to incorporate Anderson’s style to “Moonlight” because we loved the concept of revamping a dark toned movie into something more vibrant and lighthearted. To accomplish this goal, we chose some scenes from “Moonlight” that we thought had potential to be reiterated through Anderson’s directing style. We then looked at Then we drew these scenes and placed them in a storyboard panel. We also were deliberate in our camera angles and essentially eliminate dimensions to give our scenes a very “flat look”.

These cinematography decisions echo Wes Anderson’s emphasis on aesthetic rather than the actual plot. Since Moonlight deals with a lot of important and heavy topics, changing the scenes to make it seem as if they are right out of a coloring book definitely in some ways dilutes the message. The overall design of his shots, including bright color palettes and fixed camera angles helps readers to disassociate from the societal context and instead pay close attention to the story unfolding between the main characters and everything that surrounds their situation. For instance, during the Grand Budapest, the audience was oftentimes too distracted by the bright colors and whimsical characters to remember a war being the backdrop. Even though the storyline was nothing spectacular or ground breaking, the attention to detail truly compensated for a somewhat lackluster plot. At the time of the creation of the  Grand Budapest, Wes Anderson utilized the advent of the anamorphic lenses to capture wide scenes within a single camera frame.

With Moonlight, we decided to use Wes Anderson’s style of directing to take the audience’s attention away from the harsh backdrop that is Chyron’s neighborhood, school, and home life, and instead focus the attention on the better parts of Chyron’s coming of age story. Through color and framing, we used our storyboard to communicate just that. In each panel, we drew pictures that involved vibrant colors and our desired camera angles. We drew a lot of wide/ medium shots, zoom, and made the backdrops pop with warm and cool colors. In terms of positioning characters, such as Kevin, Juan, or Chyron, we drew them face to face to highlight whatever intimacy they may have. Through these changes, we hope to help audiences remember the better and pure parts of “Moonlight” rather than just the harsh backdrop of Chyron’s life.

For my capstone, I decided to create a website the gives aspiring vets a step by step process on how to become a veterinarian. The purpose of my website is to help guide aspiring veterinarians on the path to achieving a career within the veterinary field. The site covers a wide array of topics that will span over the entire process of becoming a veterinarian. The topics include "Early Commitment to Academic Success", "Getting Involved", "College Preparation", "Externship Opportunities", and a Conclusion of finally being a vet. The reason why I chose this to make this my capstone is because I never had a step by step process for this career laid out for me. So I decided to create my own process based off of my detailed research and knowledge gained from volunteering at the Wyncote Animal Hospital. The process for my capstone went pretty smoothly for the most part. I had know problem with gathering all of my resources, working with Dr. Wade at the Wyncote Animal Hospital, and creating my website. The only issue was trying to balance both capstone work and regular school work. Looking back on everything I’ve done leading up to the publishing of my website, I realized that I learned so much from my own process. I now have a better understanding of what needs to be done in order to get into a vet school and I now understand the whole process of acquiring a veterinary licence.

Before talking about how to be a veterinarian, I wanted to do some digging into the origins of veterinary medicine. To find out who was truly the first veterinarian. This source provided me with all the information I needed on the origins of veterinary medicine. According to this source, the first "animal healer" was a man named Urlugaledinna and he lived in Mesopotamia during 3000 BC. The first veterinary school was founded in 1761 in Lyon, France by a man named Claude Bourgelat. This source is credible because it was written by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in London, England.


“How Much do Vets Make a Year?” How to Become a Veterinarian, www.veterinarianedu.org/2017/06/how-much-do-vets-make-a-year/.  One of the reasons why I want to be a veterinarian is because I would get to do what I love and get paid a whole lot of money for it. This source provides me with a very detailed layout of the salary ranges for different kinds of veterinarians and their level of demand. According to this source, it turns out that Horse vets make the most money and they're in high demand. The credibility of this source is very good because it was created by Veterinarian.EDU. This is an organization whose purpose is to veterinarians in the right directions of their career path. This source has been very beneficial for me because before deciding what kind of vet I wanna be, I wanna know how good of a living I make make from that specialty. So reading through this source was very eye opening for me and it has inspired me to want to look more in the horse field of veterinary medicine.


“Kansas State University.” CVM Diversity | History: Prominent African Americans in Veterinary Medicine, www.vet.k-state.edu/about/diversity/history-aa.html.  As a black person that wants to be apart of a profession that is predominantly white, It is important to me that I learn about other black veterinarians in history. This source gives me a list of black veterinarians and brief summaries of how they came to be vets. This source is credible because it was created by Kansas State University, which happens to be a college of veterinary medicine. This page was written because they wanted to shed some light on history's vets of color. Finding this source was so inspiring because I never knew about any of these men or that there were many black veterinarians. Knowing all of this now gives me a legacy to live up to. To be that beacon of diversity like all the black vets before me.


Kramer, Mary Hope. “Learn About Being a Large Animal Veterinarian - Job Duties and More.” The Balance, www.thebalance.com/large-animal-veterinarian-125800. Out of all the veterinary specialties, I'm very intrigued by the large animal specialty. Big animals have always been interesting to me growing up because they just stand out. This source gives me all the stats on what it is like to be a large animal veterinarian. It talks about the education needed, the training, the duties, the career options, the salaries, and the job outlook. This source is credible because the author, Mary Hope Kramer, is an animal industry professional and writer with over a decade of experience of being a small and large animal vet. If I were to become a large animal vet, I would want to work with not just the farm animals, but also the large zoo animals.


Kramer, Mary Hope. “8 Steps to Start a Veterinary Practice.” The Balance, www.thebalance.com/how-to-start-a-veterinary-practice-125508. Even though I'm not sure if I want to start my own practice in the future, this is a great source to refer to now. This source gives you a detailed step by step process on how to smoothly start your own practice. It seems like a lot work, but it's an exceptional challenge in independency. The credibility of this source is very good because this article was also written by animal industry professional, Mary Hope Kramer. I trust her writing because as I wrote before, she has experience in the veterinary field. So it's good to learn from someone who's actually been through a process of becoming a vet and is a business woman.


“List of Veterinary Schools | Costs for Veterinary Students.” JobMonkey, www.jobmonkey.com/animaljobs/vet-schools/ . This source is credible because it is providing me with a long list of veterinary schools that are in the united states and in other countries as well. On this list, each name of the vet schools provides you with a hyperlink to their school website that has all the information you need in terms of in/out of state tuition, location, student to faculty ratio, size of the student body, etc. This source is beneficial for me because it helps me to know where to look for vet schools. Before this website, I really only knew of four or five vet schools, now I know all of them. I don't know which vet school I want to attend yet, but it is still nice to have some options.


“Steps to Becoming a Veterinarian (Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Major).” Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Major (Penn State University), http://vbs.psu.edu/majors/vbs/steps-to-becoming-a-veterinarian. This source is basically the whole premise of my capstone project. It is a whole step by step process that puts you on the right path to becoming a veterinarian. This source is credible because it was created by a higher education institution, Penn State University. Penn State is able to discuss this because they have their own veterinary and biomedical science major for aspiring vets such as myself. This source is very beneficial to me because it will be used as a referral for when I create my own step by step process to show in my prezi presentation.


“Summer Vets Programs.” PennVet, www.vet.upenn.edu/education/admissions/summer-vets-program. This source is actually pretty personal for me because I actually took part in UPenn' s summer vets program last summer and I learned a lot about the different studies in vet school, what it takes to get into a vet school, and the different professions within the veterinary field. This source was credible because it was created by the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. I will be able to benefit from this source a lot because it touches on the studies that aspiring vet students will have the options to take if the attend a vet school. I think this could be some helpful information for my presentation.


“ Veterinary specialists.” Veterinary specialists, www.avma.org/public/YourVet/Pages/veterinary-specialists.aspx. When aspiring to be a veterinarian, one must know all of the different specialties before coming to a conclusion on which one they want to be. This source gives you a complete list of the many types of veterinary specialties and a quick summary of what each specialty entails. This source is credible because it was created by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF). "The AVMA is the nation’s leading advocate for the veterinary profession. Representing more than ​91,000 members, they protect, promote and advance the needs of all veterinarians and those they serve." This source is very beneficial for me because I'm still figuring out what kind of vet I want to be. To see this list helps a lot because it'll help me weed out the professions that don't fit my needs.

Voss. “MRSA in livestock animals-an epidemic waiting to happen?” Clinical Microbiology and Infection, Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 4 Mar. 2008, http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1469-0691.2008.01970.x/full. This source is credible because the authors of this abstract are both microbiology veterinarians who both work for prestigious laboratorys. This source is about how veterinarians who specialize in large farm animals are in high demand to prevent the spread of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). MRSA is a zoonotic disease. What this means is that this is a type of disease that can spread from animal to human. In this specific case, MRSA has spread from pigs to humans. This source is beneficial to me because it helps me know what types of vet professions are needed in today's economy. When I begin to attend vet school after I finish my undergraduate education, I want to be able to secure a job that actually needs me.

In class, we learned about two different movie test that judge based on  female inclusiveness and anti-gender biased ideals. The first test is called the Bechdel Test. This is a simple test that judges movies on the following three criteria: It has to have at least two women in it, the women have to talk to each other, and their conversation has to be about something besides a man. The second test is called the Mako Mori Test (named after Mako Mori from the movie, “Pacific Rim”.) This test judges movies on the following three criteria: There is at least one female character, this female character gets her own narrative arc, this arc must not support a man’s story.


The first movie I did these test on was “I, Tonya”. This movie is a biography of famous, olympic, ice skater, Tonya Harding. After watching the movie, I realized that this movie does pass the bechdel test. There are two women in the movie, Tonya Harding and her mother. They have multiple conversations with each other throughout the movie. Whenever the two talked, it was always about Ice Skating or how much they hate each other. They only talked about Tonya’s boyfriend once.

After reading the criteria for the Bechdel Test and Mako Mori Test, and analyzing them for things that could be added to improve the test, I have created my very own movie test that looks for gender and racial diversity. My test is called “The Joseph Test”, and it can be used to analyze any movie. The criteria for passing my test include: There must be at least two people of color who converse with one another and at least one of them must have their own story arc. There must be at least two women, of color or white, who converse with each other and at least one of them must have a story arc. The movie cannot be predominantly white male.


My test is actually difficult because a lot of movies wouldn’t pass my test. But, I can think of a few TV shows that would. In the upcoming Marvel TV series called “Cloak and Dagger”, the show’s lead characters are a black male and a white female. They will both have their own character arcs and the other supporting characters will mirror the diversity of the main characters. In turn, the show will not be predominantly white.

Advanced Essay #4: Violence as Consumption

Intro

Hey ya’ll! I present to you my Advanced Essay #4. I’m actually really proud of this one. Before writing this essay, I used my free write space to get out all of my thoughts and potential ideas. I ended up with many topics/ideas, but I had to choose one. That’s when I decided to write about violence as consumerism. I chose to write about this because I can relate to it and it’s just very interesting to me. To understand why people buy into violence. To My goals for this paper were to open my readers’ eyes to the perspective of violence as consumerism, manage my time wisely, to not overwrite my essay, stop by the Lit Lab and include a great, larger idea.  I very happy to say that I accomplished all of my goals with no problem at all. If I had to do this again, I think I may build a little bit more on my larger idea. I hope this essay affects your perspective on violence. Enjoy!


Essay

When it comes to violence, there are two perspectives involved. The first perspective is of  those engaged in the violence. The second perspective is of those seeing the violence. Many people believe that focusing on those engaged in the violence is the most important thing when it comes to these sorts of situations. However, those seeing the violence is just as important. In today’s society, violence is ingrained in most of the things that we consume, such as movies, television, social media and, most strikingly, in video games. I can relate the most to the last one.


Growing up, I would see violence in TV shows, movies and games a lot. One time in 2011 or 2012, I went over to my best friend Tim’s house to hang out. When I walked into the house, I saw that he was playing his Play Station 2 as usual, but, today was different. He had a new game called “DC vs. Mortal Kombat.” I had never heard of it, so I sat on the couch next to Tim to see what was going on in the game. This game was so bloody, grotesque and brutal. It involved a one on one fighting game that only ended in death. I had never seen anything like it before that day. Any kind of violence I had seen before this game never involved blood and death, just kicking and punching. This game disturbed me, yet my eyes never left the television screen. After ten minutes into this game, I had become intrigued. It was at that point that I joined Tim in the game and then, days later, got the game myself.


As I had, many people have given into the sway of violent video games. Games such as, “Call of Duty”, “Mortal Kombat”, “Battle Field” and many more. The imagery that’s displayed in violent video games has a strange quality that draws many people into buying them. This is what the mixture of violence and consumerism looks like: People taking pleasure in involving themselves in violence. In a TED talk with Peter Mantello, he explained the phenomenon of violence and consumerism merging together in the video game world. He stated, “In the first person shooter game, the battle field transforms into a market place. And so the key prerequisites to capitalism, production and consumption, revolves around production (the killing of adversaries for cash-kill points) and consumption (the trading of cash-kill points for weapons and body armor). So the more you kill, the richer you become. The richer you become, the more weapons you can buy. The more weapons you can buy, the more powerful you can become.” This quote gives you the reason as to why people react this way to violent imagery in video games. Indulging in this violence makes them feel powerful. This makes sense too because, speaking from personal experience, when you shoot someone down, or take someone out with your immaculate fighting skills and/or powers, you feel on top of the world and unbeatable. It’s an oddly amazing feeling.


This is one of the things that capitalism comprises. It took violence and put a price tag on it. Capitalism understands the powerful feeling these violent games give people. So they continue to manufacture more of these games. We, as a society, continue to consume these games. Capitalism prospers while society gradually becomes more violent. The more society buys into violence, the more it's safe to say that violence is human nature. People have been trying to end violence for many decades, but the result is always the same: more violence.

Succeeding as a Black Man in 50's-60's: The Story of my Pop-Pop

​My goals for this podcast were to learn as much about my grandfather as possible, try and add 50's to 60's music that my grandfather liked, and pull and interesting story out of the long interview. I was able to accomplish all of these goals but the music one due to slow internet. What went well was downloading the podcast onto my laptop. My struggles were the with my recording. At one point a had to redo the whole thing because it got deleted. What I learned from this project is how to work sound trap properly, and I learned new things about my grandfather.

Advanced Essay #3 What Truly Contributes to Defining our Identity?

Introduction

I had a little bit of a hard time writing this paper. The topic of identity can be really hard to write about due to the fact that it’s so broad of a topic. But after a couple of days of thinking and sorting out my ideas, I finally was able to to come up with a question and a stable structure on how to answer my question. Overall, I’m proud of my work because I wasn’t too confident in this assignment when we first got it. But I think I met all the requirements. I hope you enjoy reading my thoughts.


Essay

What truly contributes to defining our identity?


Society is so consumed in the materialistic aspect of our world. Whether it’s worrying about how many followers/likes they have on Instagram, “needing” to wear the latest fashion, religiously watching the lives of our favorite celebrities, or concerning ourselves with how much money we have/want. We believe that these things make us better, more popular, or bring us happiness. But the problem with this is that all of these material things are only temporary. They only provide temporary happiness; we as a culture strive for things to be permanent because we aren’t satisfied with temporary. In a video called “Celebrities Speak Out On Fame and Materialism”, different celebrities discuss identity and happiness in the fame industry. During an interview with actress, Cameron Diaz, she  states, “If you are looking for fame to define you, then you will never be happy. You will always be searching for happiness.” In today’s society, fame is one of the top goals people would like to achieve. But when they get there it’s like, what else is there to do now that they have everything they could every want? Fame doesn’t bring happiness and define your identity because all the praise is going towards what the person is known for, rather than who they are beyond their talent. Fame is a perfect example of how martialism as a whole shouldn’t define you. The material thing can get uninteresting really quick and it can overshadow who you really are as a person.


Our culture focuses on materialism so much that we begin to slowly forget what truly defines who we are or want to become; and that’s us. Going back to the “Celebrities Speak Out On Fame and Materialism” video, actress/model Cara Delevingne touched on the topic of identity. She says, “The most important journey…..is the journey in ourselves. To find our truth, to find who we are and what makes us happy.” It’s important that people go on this journey because it will separate us from the material world and “force” us to focus on ourselves and what we want to become in  life. This sets up the stage for what should truly define one’s identity. Before one can reach the final destination in the journey of discovering who they are, they must make one pit stop. This pit stop will be most helpful in defining one’s identity. But depending on the person, it can be extensive.


This pit stop is called expanding your horizons. This consist of several other sub-pit stops, but we are going to only focus on a couple. Such as expanding your knowledge, surrounding yourself with the right people, traveling to new places, and taking risk. By expanding your knowledge, you could learn things that can change the way you think for the better.  This can be achieved by reading more books or learning from the experiences of others. Knowledge is power; the more you know, the better you become. By surrounding yourself with the right people, you open yourself to new opinions and ideas that could indeed shape your identity. These people should be uplifting and contribute positively to upbringing of your identity, rather than being negative and influencing you to become someone that you don’t want to be.

This world is so vast and has so much to offer. By traveling to new places, you can start the process of figuring out the role you want to play in the world. Traveling doesn't just mean going to another continent or even across the country; you could also stay close to home and just travel to a part of your city(or state) that’s new to you. Your identity is shaped by your environment; by traveling to new places, you learn about what you can take away from the environment and if you are affected positively or negatively by it. By taking risk in life, you open yourself to endless possibilities that can shape your identity. If you stay in “the safety zone” of life by sticking to what you already know and have done in life, then you won’t become worse or better; you would just stay as you are. But if you take a step into “the risky zone” of life by experiencing new and different things, you may discover things that you never thought you would like, but do. You may also discover things that you never thought you could do, but can. Taking risk can be two sided, you could improve as a person or worsen, but you’ll never know if you don’t try.


The larger idea here is that our identity is defined by the world. Maybe not all of it, but certain aspects of it like culture, religion, politics, or even materialism. By expanding your horizons, you’re opening yourself up to all of the world. Experiencing all it has to offer and seeing what works for you and what doesn’t. No matter what people say defines their identity, all of their ideas are a product of their experience living in the world.

Advanced Essay #2: Education of "Reading" the World

Introduction

Writing this essay has affected me in a positive way as a writer. I feel as though my writing  became better and my vision for literature had been expanded. My goal for this essay was to change the way people think what it means to be educated in literacy. I’m very proud of this essay, I think it was very well written. I’m also proud of myself for finding a larger idea to touch on in this essay. In my last essay, I didn’t really accomplish this. To improve myself as a writer, I think I should remember to not write too many unecessary words. I tcan end to write extrenuiously. Overall, I’m proud of my work and I hope you will be too.


Essay

During the good ole days of my adolescence, probably 14 or 13 years old, I was watching TV and came across a show called, “Parks and Recreation”. It was my first time watching the show, and I just jumped into the random episode that was on. I didn’t know anything about the characters, so I had to “read” them to sort of understand what they were about. For example, one of the characters on the show, named April, has very dark and I-don’t-care-about-anything attitude about her. I learned this from intensely “reading” the way she spoke, acted and carried herself. Another example from the show is a character named Leslie. After “reading” the details of the way she talked, acted and did things, I understood that this character is someone who is constantly determined to get things done, wants everyone to be happy and can be way over the top at times.


I see this moment in my life as a form literacy. As you may know, literacy is a form of education. While watching “Parks and Recreation” for the first time, I was educating myself on who the characters were by “reading” them. Most people would say that I’m not educating myself; they’d say that I’m doing nothing more than watching non educational TV. But they are wrong. By “reading” these characters, I’m educating myself on who they are and what they’re about. There is more to education than just school curriculum.


In the Apartheid of Children’s Literature, Christopher Meyers finds out how old a child is just by examining his features: "I’m talking with a boy. He’s at that age when the edges of the man he will become are just starting to press against his baby-round face." Although Meyers doesn’t state the actual age of the child, his description of him entails that he is at a maturing age such as 12 or 13. In this quote, Meyers demonstrates the exact same thing that I performed when I first watched “Parks and Recreation”. In order to better understand who this little boy was, Meyers educated himself by “reading” the boy. Literacy has many forms, and being able to read people is one of those forms. This would classify as cultural literacy because culture symbolizes identity, and identity is what I was looking for when educating myself on the characters of “Parks and Recreation”.


Knowing how to “read” people, and or situations, is a great way to educate one’s self; especially if you don’t know how to read. In today’s society, high officials set the standard that being literate means just knowing how to read words. If you can’t read words, then you would be considered slow minded and unable to be educated. The fact that this is happening is unacceptable, especially when it comes to race. They are basically making them dumb by ignoring the intelligence they already possess. Just because a person isn’t literate in one way, doesn't mean they aren’t literate in another. Like I mentioned before, literacy has many forms. When Sherman Alexie was just a young, Indian boy in his story, Superman and Me, he was unable to read the words in the Superman comic book that he had. But, that doesn’t mean he was unable to read the story: “In one panel, Superman breaks through a door. His suit is red, blue and yellow. The brown door shatters into many pieces. I look at the narrative above the picture. I cannot read the words, but I assume it tells me that ‘Superman is breaking down the door.’ Aloud, I pretend to read the words and say, ‘Superman is breaking  down that door.’” (Pg 12-13) This quote emphasizes my idea that there is more to education than schooling because Sherman reads the comic book without reading the words. By “reading” the actions and situations in the comic book, Sherman then taught himself how to read. Looks like people who don’t know how to read words aren’t so slow minded as some people assume they are.


In fact it was from this point, of educating  himself on how to read, that Sherman was on the path to a bright future. Near the end of Superman and Me, Sherman grew up to become a very successful and well rounded adult: “Despite all the books I read, I am still surprised  I became a writer. I was going to be a pediatrician. These days I write novels, short stories and poems. I visit schools and teach creative writing to Indian kids.” (Pg 14)  This quote doesn’t really exemplify my claim, but it does support it. The quote points out that other forms of education, such as “reading” the world, can lead you to success just as much as schooling education.


The fact that Sherman grew up to be such a successful writer is a major feat, especially since he taught himself how to read. Like Sherman, not many minority youth are given the opportunity to get educated in literacy. So they would either learn about it in another way or not learn it at all. The high officials of today’s society, who are pre-dominantly white, set the standard as to what literacy is and who can be educated in it. When these high officials see minorities who don’t know how to read or write, they write them off immediately or give them very low quality education on literacy. Back in 2014 in an essay called The Apartheid of Children’s Literature, a man named Christopher Meyers saw the potential for greatness in young minorities, particularly black ones. He decided to educate them on a consistent issue with children’s book that is still a little relevant today. This exchange is between Meyers and a young, black boy: “‘So you’re telling me these are all the books published last year for kids?’ they ask me. ‘That’s a lot of books. That’s more books than I could read in a year.’

‘Yep, it’s a few thousand.’

‘And in all of those thousands of books, I’m just not in them?’

‘Well...um...yes.’

‘Are there books about talking animals?’

‘Oh, sure.’

‘And crazy magical futures?’

‘Absolutely.’

‘And superpowers? And the olden days when people dressed funny? And all the combinations of those things? Like talking animals with superpowers in magical futures ... but no me?’

‘No you.’

‘Why?’

‘ Because you’re brown.’”

Meyers educated this child, and most likely others, on this topic by having them “read” over the world of children’s literacy. This agrees with my idea that there is more to education than just schooling because these black kids were educated on an issue that most schools wouldn't even touch on. These kids were being taught how to be aware of the diversity issues going on in the world of children's literature.

In conclusion, the education of literacy is very diverse topic. In this essay, I focused on the literacy of “reading” people and situations; which would fall in the category of cultural literacy. Most people would say that this type of literacy is not needed or unimportant, but I beg to differ. By being able to “read” people and or situations, you acquire a skill set that is very much used in politics. Which is “reading” issues/ situations and coming with ways to improve or fix the situations. So we, as a society, need to reevaluate how we view education. Because we could just be dismissing our future politicians and presidents.

Advanced Essay #1: Fantasy vs. Reality

My goal for this essay is to show my audience why I love fantasy books. I’m very proud of my detailed description of the book cover in my story. My description should paint a clear picture of the book’s cover in the minds of my audience. One thing that I needed improvement in my essay would probably be getting to the point faster in my writing. This is fixed now, but before it was just extra writing that wasn’t needed. I hope you enjoy the experience of reading my essay.

Near the bottom/ middle of the picture is a fight scene between two teenage boys and their horses. On the bottom left side of the picture is a depiction of one of the two boys. It starts out with a rising black thundercloud with yellow lightning streaks coming from it. Rising from the thundercloud is the boy wielding a sword on a horse. The boy is caucasian, with a sort of goldish tan and golden blonde hair. He is raising his golden sword with his right hand and holding on to the horse with his left hand. He is wearing a purple shirt and making an angry/ screaming face toward his opponent. The horse this guy is riding has the same look as the thundercloud, black with many yellow lightning streaks for veins. Also, this horse’s eyes are a glowing red. The horse seems to be rearing up, but from the middle of his stomach and down is covered in the black thundercloud.

Next is the teenage boy on the bottom right of the picture rising from a violent wave of water is with a sword on a horse. This boy is caucasian as well, but his skin does not have a golden tan-like tone to it and he has ruffled black hair; his skin looks a little darker. He is raising his shining bronze sword with his right hand and holding onto his horse with his left hand. He is wearing an orange shirt and he is also making an angry/ screaming face at his blonde haired opponent. This boy’s horse is a black pegasus but you can’t see the wings too well, so don’t worry about the wings. Like the thunder horse, the pegasus seems to be rearing up as well. But from the the middle of the pegasus’ stomach and down, the waves are covering it. Both of the two horse’s front legs appear to be touching each other as they are reared up near the bottom middle of the picture.

Right above this battle near the top of the picture, in a crimson red color, is a huge face of an owl. It’s not the owl’s entire face, but just it’s eyes and small beak. The eyes are drawn to stare right at you. Creating a “C” like formation around both owl eyes are feathers. Right in between the owl’s eyes is a medium streak of white lightning, and around the outer parts of the owl’s face is small minor streaks of lightning. Above the owl’s face, the picture just does a transition from crimson red to black. The last thing is that starting from the top of the two horse’s heads and going toward the bottom of the picture, behind the battle scene and between the black thundercloud and violent wave is a sort of whitish and yellowish color.

This picture that I have delicately described is the cover for a book called, “The Mark of Athena”, by Rick Riordan. The day my mom took me to Barnes and Nobles in 2012 to get this book, I unintentionally memorized every detail of the cover. It was so inviting to my young and curious eyes that I had to have it. Like most fantasy books, looking at this book made me hype to delve into it. From then up to now, diving into the worlds of fantasy stories is such a beautiful feeling. It pulls you away from reality, which for me was an amazing thing. Back when I was twelve and reading, “The Mark of Athena” getting pulled away from reality meant getting away from homework, annoying teachers, and some responsibilities. Now that I’m a teenager in the eleventh grade, reading books like, “The Mark of Athena”, means getting away from more homework, bigger responsibilities, benchmarks, the major nuisances of this world, and the the idea of growing up. Sometimes, the thought of growing up can be scary. So to make myself feel better, I would pick up a fantasy book and delve into it. Not only are fantasy books so interesting and exciting to read, but they are also very comforting and they give me a sense that I will be alright.

Even though fantasy alleviates reality, reality is still reality. Growing up as a leisure reader, I soon had to learn the hard way that I won’t always be able to read the books that that I want. Whent started my first year of Science Leadership academy, I was already in the middle of a good book. But then I was assigned lots of homework and lots of educational reading. Which was very boring. Because of all this work, I then had to set my leisure reading aside. Reality had won this round against fantasy. I had thought that I would be able to read my book again after all my work was done. But as the work progressed to greater amounts and as the school reading increased, I wasn’t able to catch up on my leisure reading until the next year. After my freshmen year, I had thought that reality always wins against fantasy. It wasn’t until my sophomore year that I learned that fantasy can sometimes beat reality too. That is to say, I found time to do some leisure reading. It was then that I created a balance between Fantasy and Reality. I made sure that not only would I get my school work done and get good grades, but that I would find time do some leisure reading.

ILP Blog Post

My experience at my ILP (The Philly Zoo) is very amazing. I get to use my public speaking skills a lot, I make lots of friends, I help people, and I gain a lot of knowledge about animals that I d. This ILP has really help my communication skills get better, and I now have a better understanding on what animal and environmental conservation is. I enjoy working at my ILP.

Reconstruction Era Visuals Project

      Before I get into my concept map, I have to say that I feel pretty proud of my work. I really enjoyed how I got to put all of my creativity and imagination into this great work of art. I hope you enjoy this masterpiece as much as I do. As you examine my concept map, you will see that on the paths there are large words written on them. These words are basically summarizing what it was like for most black people to have to go through these tough challenges during the reconstruction period. The next thing you will see on my map that might be confusing is the thirteenth amendment being the start of my map. The thirteenth amendment is the start of my map because this amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. Another thing on my map that might not be entirely clear to some people is the word freedom with quotation marks around it. I have added quotation marks around the word freedom because even after all the challenges that they endured, they still weren't truly free. The thirteenth amendment might have started the path to freedom for all free blacks, but not every white person agreed with this idea. For this is the reason why free black people were not truly free. My map matters because it gives it's viewers a quick run down of the three huge challenges that African Americans faced during the reconstruction period. Without hearing long lechures and reading long articles. My map has meaning for the study of the Reconstruction era because the three challenges on my map played huge roles during the time of reconstruction.

Q3 Art Reflection

​After doing this drawing, I felt that I accomplished good detail on my side walls.

If I could do this project again, I would add more tables and stools and I would lower my door from touching the ceiling.

The picture I found to be the most interesting would be Liv's picture. Her picture is very detailed and looks like she measured different parts of the drawing very accurately. She drew the wall that's across from the board. I think that her drawing is successful because it captures her wall's image very accurately.

From drawing one point perspective pictures, I learned that everything I draw in the picture must reflect back to the vantage point.

¡SLA es Súper Agudo!


¡Hola! Somos Asher Swartz, Tajnia Hussain, y Joseph Lee, y somos en noveno grado. Somos estudiantes de Science Leadership Academy, o SLA. SLA es una Filadelfia imán escuela. Está en centro ciudad Filadelfia, 55 Norte 22 Calle. Está cerca de Arch Street Gourmet, Trader Joe’s, y 7-Eleven. ¡Comida! SLA es muy divertidos, y un poco extraño. Hay muchos estudiantes cómicos. ¡Es súper genial! Hay aproximadamente 500 estudiantes en la escuela, casi 120 por clase. Tenemos cinco pisos, y muchos profesores. Tenemos deportes diferentes, corremos en las carreras, leemos y escribimos poesía, cantamos canciones y bailamos bailes, y dibujamos arte. Tenemos también tocamos instrumentos, trabajamos en proyectos, estudiamos para pruebas, y comemos durante el almuerzo. ¡Tenemos buenos niños y niñas equipos fútbol y equipo de debate (bastante bueno equipo de debate), y muchos más maravillosos equipos y clubes! ¡Asher participa en Ultimate Frisbee porque es tremendamente divertidos! ¡Tenemos un gran escuela!

Hay clases bioquimica, historia, inglés, español, álgebra, tecnología, teatro y ingegneria en noveno grado. Mis clases favoritas inglés y bioquímica. Inglés es muy divertida y entretenido y un poco difícil. Nosotros hacemos trabajamos y escribimos. Señor Kay enseña muy bien y es tranquilo y chévere. Necesitamos la computadora y libros. Leemos libros tal como Odyssey, y opciones libros. Para tener éxito en esta clase debemos escuchar y prestar atención durante las
discusiones. Bioquímica es bastante, interesante y fácil. Señorita Dunda es sociable y fantástica enseña. Necesitamos cuaderno para labs y bata de laboratorio. Experimentamos y tomar apuntes. Es requerido y importante a colaborar y hacer preguntas. También a responsable en puntualidad y estar preparada.

La Srta Manuel enseña español. Es bastante tranquila, boba, y baja. Su clase es divertido, interesante, y muy energético. En la clase hablamos español, cantamos en español, jugamos juegos, y tomamos apuntes. También tenemos súper divertido competiciones de clase. Los estudiantes son qué chévere y responsable. Muy diverso. Nosotros somos una mezla de razas.

SLA es muy chévere. Nos encanta la libertad, nos encanta los estudiantes, nos encanta el almuerzo, nos encanta las computadoras, nos encanta The Franklin Institute, nos encanta las clases, y muchos más. Lo que más nos gusta de SLA los profesores. Ellos son divertido, tranquilo, inteligente, y muy útil. SLA es muy exitoso, bajo, y súper interesante. SLA es un muy bien escuela para todos los que estén interesados en la ciencia. Amamos nuestra escuela.

Net Neutrality: By Joseph Lee

​Net neutrality is important for teens to know about because it teaches them why it matters to them. Without net neutrality, teens won't be able to go to some of the websites they want to visit because it will be blocked. Teens also need to understand how this affects their parents as well. Without net neutrality, certain sites will have to be payed extra money in order to access them. It doesn't make sense for people to have to pay extra money for certain sites when that money is already payed for when you buy internet service.

    Not having net neutrality can also affect a teenagers education. Their education is affected because these days most schools give the students laptops, and the students are then assigned homework that requires the use of the internet. Without net neutrality some sites will be harder for students to get access to. Plus it will be hard for the school to pay extra money for the blocked websites because most schools are on a tight budget or they're broke.  This can also affect a student if he is home schooled on a computer, then it will be harder for the student to access his online classes and other important pieces of information.

    Teenagers also need to know about the main people who are against net neutrality, which are certain I.S.P.s. The I.S.P.s against net neutrality are Verizon and Comcast. They think that they should be able to choose what people do and don't see online and charge content providers accordingly. They think that net neutrality hurts their revenue potential. Everyone deserves free access to all online content, it shouldn't be blocked by I.S.P.s.

Jojo's Slide Pt 2 :) :) ;)

​So for my new and improved slide, I made the background blue and green because they are my 2 favorite colors and they stand out really well and I think they clash together really well. I made the pictures black and white because it makes my background pop. Also, there are only little bit of pictures on this slide because I remembered that a picture can say a thousand words and each of my pictures have a lot to say. I made my text the way it is because I learned on zachholman.com that for good Slide-ology I can make my text big, get rid of some of the words, then make it bigger. I took the feed back I got from my peers and put it into my new slid by taking out a lot of pictures and making my slide more clear and focused so that my pictures are not distracting my viewers from seeing the main idea of my slide.

Me gusta jugar videojuegos con mi amigo Cyborg, es mi mejor amigo. Me encanta comer tofu. Me gusta ir al cine con mi amigos. No me gusta nada dibujar, soy terrible. No me gusta nada estudiar, es sùper aburrido.

Homework Network Lee

So this is my Local Area Network. My I.S.P. is Sprint, I have a router that is located in my computer room, and my internet is wireless. The devices connected to the internet are four iPhones, three tablets, two laptops, the Apple/Samsung T.V., and two game systems. 

While doing this assignment, I learned many different things. I learned that everyone has a different network setup, different I.S.P.'s, different ways of connecting to the internet, and different devices that connect to their internet. My "OMG" moment was when I learned that there are three different kinds of cables that can connect our internet to our routers. The names of the cables are Coaxial Cable, Copper Wire, and Fiber Optic Cable.

After doing this project, I would tell other people that when choosing their internet service providers, they should choose wisely and make sure they are reliable.
