Bracket of the Tournament
Bracket of the Tournament
For my senior project, I was interested in finding the best way to efficiently host a sporting event. I did this by creating and hosting a 3v3 soccer tournament. I contacted soccer players at both SLA campuses to participate in this event. Soccer is my passion and by hosting this tournament, I took advantage of this opportunity to explore a possible future career as I will be pursuing Sports Management at Drexel University this upcoming fall. My mentor, Mark Johnson, has provided great help in the course of organizing and hosting this tournament. I have learned how to set milestones and complete objectives, how to advertise and most importantly how to host a successful event. Finding the perfect date and venue were the largest obstacles that I faced along the way. Relying on the recent inconsistent weather patterns complicated matters as well. On the other hand, I learned much more through my research and the success of my event. The participation and enthusiasm from SLA Center City students, SLA at Beeber students, and alumni made this capstone a success.

Law Class

Posted by Jorin Gerveni in Ilp - 10Th Grade - Giorgio - Wed on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 2:53 pm
I am really enjoying my ILP. We have been discussing current problems and we went through all the amendments and learned about them. Also, we've been arguing different real cases which helped with our debating skills. I asked the mentors if we could start doing mock-trials with real cases and they said that that was a great idea. I recently received an email with a case and I am working on writing something to argue it. Overall, I really like my ILP.

First ILP Class

For my ILP I am taking a Law Class in school. So far the law students talked about the amendments and real life situations. Then we gave real life examples and how we would personally act on those situations. It is very interesting and it really gets us thinking because we talked about things we could use if we get into those situations. I'm really enjoying my ILP and I hope I get to learn more about law.

After two weeks of contacting and trying to find an ILP, I finally met with Jeremy and asked him if there's anything I can do since Drexel and Penn didn't get back at me. He said that I would be doing Law Class in school every Wednesday at 1:30. I hope I get to learn more about lawyers and how a courtroom works. The roles in a courtroom and how lawyers get prepared about a case.

For my ILP I wanted to do something interesting. I thought I'd do something with sports, at Drexel university. I  did not meet with Jeremy that week but I emailed the sports program at Drexel for the third time and also tried to call them. I did not hear back from them. Currently I am looking at other options for my ILP. I want to meet with Jeremy next Wednesday and see if there's anything else I can do.

For my ILP I wanted to do something interesting and fun. I thought I'd do something with sports, specifically soccer. I met with Jeremy and told me to look up contact information. After going to some collages' websites and gathering contact information, I told Jeremy about it and he said to work on and e-mail to send them. I e-mailed the athletics program at Drexel and U Penn on October 7th, saying that I wanted to intern at their soccer training program. I haven't heard back from them. Currently I am working on sending a second email. I want to meet with Jeremy this Wednesday and see if there's another way I could contact them or if there's anything else I can do.

Reflection on ELL Bullying

Posted by Jorin Gerveni in English 1 - Giknis - A on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 9:58 pm
As you may know already from reading my Blog Posts #1, #2, #3, the topic for my You and the World project was ELL Bullying. For the research part of my project I introduced my topic, wrote about my connection with it and what the issue was. Something that really intrigued me was the statistics. There weren't a lot of number showing the bullying that happened in schools. It would've helped me a lot if I had some statistics in my research.

For my original research I went over to my old school where I interviewed one of my old teachers. The interview was very interesting and we talked a lot about ELL Bullying experiences and the issues that are involved. We also talked about how to prevent/reduce this problem. Something that went great during my interview were the questions that were asked and the great responses that I received. It could've been better if I asked more questions, that way I could have more things to write about.

Finally, for my Agent of Change part, went back to my old school to give a presentation on ELL Bullying. After arranging a meeting, I prepared a 45-minute long presentation, which I am really proud of. The presentation was really great and everything was perfect. I had a couple activities planned and they worked out really well. About 35 people participated and the students were glad that I presented in front of them. One of the teachers said that some of the students look up to me because I was an ELL and I didn't let bullying stop me from achieving my goals. So, I think I definitely had the impact I hoped for. My Agent of Change could've been better if I presented to more people at SLA, not just D.N. Fell.

A Closer Look at ELL Bullying

On my first blog post I introduced the topic I researched, ELL(English Language Learners) bullying. For the part of the project I went over to my old school where I interviewed one of my old teachers about my topic. The seconds blog post was all about the interview and what went on during it. I also did more research. So, for my Agent of Change, I went back to my old school to give a presentation on ELL bullying. This school has a lot of ELLs and I figured they had experienced this problem.

Usually when you are reading/watching something about bullying, you expect statistics that show how many students were bullied and things like that. Well, during my research I learned that people haven’t talked about the bullying of the ELLs. There needs to be more articles written about that and more publicity about it so the people are aware that it’s a big problem. There were specific examples but very small numbers.

I wanted to make a change by spreading the word and letting people know that ELL bullying is a very serious problem. In order to do that I contacted one of my old teachers and we talked to the principal of the school. He agreed for me to go there and give a 45-min presentation on ELL bullying. If you would like to see my presentation, take a look.

I opened up by putting a piece of tape across a table. Then, I took some toothpaste and spread it on the tape. I asked the students, “Can anyone here put this toothpaste back on the tube?” They all said no. I told them that the same thing happens with bullying. That when you say things that hurt people, you can’t take it back.

This is me introducing my presentation.

About thirty five people attended my presentation. As I was getting everything together I heard some of the students say “Why are we here?” or “Ugh… another bullying presentation!” I turned around and I explained what I was about to present. I told them that it wasn’t just about bullying, but ELL bullying. Bullying that happens to students like them. Then suddenly, they were all paying attention and became more interested.

Some of the people that attended my presentation.

During my presentation a teacher, Mr. Dale Perkins, helped me a lot. He explained more thoroughly the things that I was saying because some of the students couldn't understand. He also helped me with the activity at the end of the presentation. We passed out four poster boards and we told the students to write mean things on them. At first the students were kind of shy but then, after a few words, they starting writing so many things. Then we collected those papers and passed out four other poster boards, but this time they had to write nice things. The students started writing nice word and everyone wanted to write something. After that, I took the posters that had mean words written on them and ripped them apart. I told the students that the words had no meaning and did not matter. Then, I took the posters that had nice words on them and we all read them out loud.

The students were very excited and very interested in the topic. My goal was to spread the word and let people know about ELL Bullying. I feel like people should write more articles and talk about it more. Unfortunately, I couldn't upload the video of my 45-min presentation but, enjoy the pictures.

English Language Learners getting Bullied

Posted by Jorin Gerveni in English 1 - Giknis - A on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 12:05 am

Haven’t read my first blog? Do it now, just click here.

On my first blog post I introduced the topic I am still researching, ELL(English Language Learners) bullying. For this part of the project I went over to my old school where I interviewed one of my old teachers about my topic. This teacher was actually one of the first people to really help me understand what I was doing. He helped me understand everything I had trouble with and tackle harder books so it could improve my writing. My old school has a lot of ELLs and I figured they had experienced this problem. Click here to read the full interview.

What I found out during my interview is that a lot of students are made fun of the way the look or their accents and face lots of social struggles. ”Well, you know, all students get teased and made fun of as they grow up. This happens to everybody, but there’s a difference between being teased and getting bullied. English language learners are particularly vulnerable to being bullied because bullies generally try to target people that are maybe a little bit different or a little bit vulnerable, and ELLs qualify on both counts. They’re different because of the way they dress, the way they look, the way they talk and they’re vulnerable because their English isn't that good.” So the victim can’t speak up.

As I was doing more research on my topic, I came across this story about a Cuban girl who moved to America when she was eight with lots of excitement. She ended up being bullied because she was different. She went to school and kids made fun of her, put spiders under her desk and the teacher wouldn't do anything. She was hoping things would get better, but they didn't. She had no friends and got bullied even more. They insulted her and she was depressed. She went to a therapist and learned that bullies had their own problems. In high school she changed her outside to make her feel better on the inside. She made new friends and talked to more people. She I realized that she let the bullies take control of her emotions and locked herself in her own world of not speaking, not having friends, and wishing she was another person. Full story lies here.

I also learned that people haven’t talked about the bullying of the ELLs. There needs to be more articles written about that and more publicity about it so the people are aware that it’s a big problems. Here is one about bullying in race, ethnicity and immigration. It talks about the ways that the students are bullied and some ways you can prevent it at school.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get any pictures of me interviewing the person. But, this picture represents the other people protecting the one in the middle which is different than them. From this website

Heads Up!

Posted by Jorin Gerveni in English 1 - Giknis - A on Friday, April 24, 2015 at 11:55 pm

Bullying is one of the biggest problems in schools all over the world. It all starts with an annoying comment then it leads to sever matters. We've seen it happen and unfortunately, lots of people know how it feels. No one likes it, especially people who can’t fight back whether it's physically or verbally. Those people or students are immigrants and English Language Learners (ELLs).

My interest on ELLs being bullied is very personal. Two years ago I moved to the United States knowing only twenty words in English.  I went to a new school where people were nice to me, but a few other students were making fun of me. I remember they were making fun of my accent and a few words I used. They continued to do that for a full school year and it really bothered me. It wasn't just me they were making fun of, there were more of my classmates that had to go through their bullying and act like everything was okay.

The issue is that these students can’t fight back in any way other than inappropriate behavior. There are many ways these kids get bullied. For example, students get taunted and sometimes physically abused. They are made fun of the way they dress or what they believe in and many more.

This is important because if all these non-ELLs are getting bullied and not a lot of peple know about it. There a many difficulties that these students have. Like, learning disabilities, adjusting to the environment and meeting new people. Language differences, they might not understand what is being said or cannot respond to the point. Bullying experiences may lead to inappropriate behavior and self-harm.

Research shows that about 50% of students say that they make fun of non-ELLs accents and 29% say that they use physical force to bully them.

I am very proud of my drawing because I spent a lot of time on this and I feel like this is one of the top drawing I've drew this year. If I could do this project again I would've used my time more wisely because I didn't get a lot done the first class. It would've been really helpful. I think Johnathan's drawing was successful. It met all the requirements, and he included lots of detail. I learned that it's not a simple task or skill, and it takes time to perfect your drawing.

Net Neutrality/// Gerveni

Posted by Jorin Gerveni in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - b2 on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 12:50 pm

Net neutrality is very important. Why? It's because it teaches teens about the internet. It teaches them more than they think they know the internet. Net neutrality is when all data is produced equally to everyone. Net neutrality is treating the internet equally. The internet is a mess and we need net neutrality to organize it.

Net neutrality reads the ISP. ISP (Internet Service Provider) is a company that provides you with access to the Internet for a fee. ISPs are middle men. ISPs receive the internet and sell it to customers for higher prices. They shorten the speed and its access. The more you pay, the faster your internet.

The FCC (The Federal Communications Commission) is a government created agency. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates interstate communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. It is an independent U.S. government agency overseen by Congress. Its works on facing economic opportunities and challenges associated with advances in global communications. Provides leadership in strengthening the defense of the nation's communications infrastructure.

The reason my slide looks like this is because all the pictures did not connect with each other. I had to switch the album cover with the ¨who cares i'm awesome¨ because it needed to connect with the music picture.

All About Me Slide

The reason my slide looks like that, is because I put pictures of everything that I like and pictures that describe me. I am independent, generous, courageous, very athletic but, sometimes I am little impatient. I am good at friendship.I have tons of friends. I always look out for my friends and try protect them. I am enthusiastic about my goals and I enjoy my life. This slide basically describes me and what I do in my life. As you can see, there are two pictures related to soccer. That’s because I love playing soccer and as one of my friends would say “ Soccer is life.” One of my dreams is to play for a professional team. The picture on the bottom is related to the picture that has a camera in it because one of my favorite hobbies is photography. I also like drawing, listening to music and watching movies. I put the pictures there to represent something about me and to show who I am.
