Jasir Chavis Capstone

Posted by Jasir Chavis on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at 12:17 am

For my capstone, I decided to use the engineering experience that I have and perfect face masks. When trying to perfect the face masks that we now wear on a daily basis I looked at ways to bring comfort while maintaining safety. My first design was to use LEDs and place them around the exposed breathing holes of a face mask to bring the normalcy of breathing in fresh air but still providing protection. After finding that the route I was taking was too complex for my means I instead decided to keep it safe and simple. The idea arose to create a sliding circular object that can be manually spun open/close depending on the environment the wearer is in. I have pictures taken from Fusion 360 to show the original design and the shift of my final product and a video showing the creation of the piece to satisfy my Capstone requirements.

Advanced Essay#2: America's Misconception

Posted by Jasir Chavis in English 3 · Block · Y Band on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 5:05 pm

Introduction:

I would like the readers to see that I tried to include both my own opinion and the connections from the real world. I think when writing this I just wanted to express all my thoughts and my view on the society we currently live in. I would like you, the readers to recognize and understand the story of Ibanez. The story in some way shows the misconception we have about Immigration and the misconception of what happens once someone migrates to a new country. Writing this essay was hard in the sense of I have a lot of opinions and there are a lot of facts the dilemma is how do I write all of this in a way where it’s not confusing.

Full Essay:

A garage full of immigrants sits wondering. Why was this happening? What had they done besides seek refuge in a country that once screamed freedom? What they would later find out due to it making national news was that they were being detained and sent back to their native country due to fear from the American government. The excuses for why this was happening in the belief of what an immigrant brings with them the word immigrant or illegal alien is associated with drugs, violence, and being unamerican. The government that we are supposed to trust in an attempt to unify the world we inhabit has in many ways failed to deliver their promise. Most take the words of our government as truth and in turn have ruined the opportunity to build a relationship with those trying to live the life that we are privileged to have. We live in a country where we judge without having experienced, we respect and listen to the wealthy, but in reality, we have more in common with immigrants than we do with American billionaires and politicians. We just like immigrants have dreams and aspirations, and we in some cases struggle to get by. Compared to the billionaires of the world we are all at the bottom of the melting pot. The cause of this Immigration issue is due to the fear of change in power within American society.

Immigration according to American politicians is a contributing factor to America’s economic growth. But if that’s the case why has it become such a wedge in American society? We now live in a society where change is inevitable, but as just as many people want to see a change many want things to either stay the same or revert to what they used to be. The policy concerning immigration in the US has changed constantly. In 2016 ICE removed 240,255 immigrants in 2018 that would increase to 256,085. There has been an increase in the removal of immigrants from the US and there have been countless policies set in place to try and limit the illegal migration of immigrants. The most recent and in my opinion the most drastic was the zero-tolerance policy which allowed children to be separated from their parents who were unlawfully entering the United States.

After all that has happened the question began to arise, Are our leader’s actions a representation of the country as a whole? Which formed the bigger question Do American citizens understand and sympathize with immigrants? The answer is simply no, we do not understand nor sympathize with the struggle of an immigrant because we simply have not experienced it. In the CBS News article “You have to live in fear” Is the story of an immigrant named Ibanez who illegally crossed the border after his family at the age of 14. He was born in Mexico and while there he lived a life where a meal wasn’t to be expected every day which he says was one of his hardest memories from living in Mexico. His family snuck into the United States, but while they were on the land of the free they were far from freedom while his siblings are safe from having to immigrate back Ibanez and his mother are not. He is fearful that one day will be the day in which he is separated from his family, but until then he continues to go to school and work to provide for his family.

A common misconception that Americans tend to have about immigrants is that once they cross that border their lives and their families’ life instantly change for the better and that is simply just not true. The life of an immigrant is hard it is full of loss, struggle, and pain you are in every sense of the word on your own whether an immigrant is legal or illegal. Due to the policies that exist today that revolves around immigration the relationship that people from other countries have with one another including our own has made things weird in a sense of probable difference of opinion. I don’t think the word immigrant or any synonym of the word should exist. I think as human beings we inherited the land that was left to us and it’s not the property of one single individual or an established group of people. I think it is one thing to have established a set of rules in a society, but when you begin to prohibit others from pursuing their dreams then something is truly wrong.

We are letting the ideas of our government officials create these ideas of who and what immigrants are. Trump recently said, “We have people coming into the country or trying to come in, we’re stopping a lot of them, but we’re taking people out of the country. You wouldn’t believe how bad these people are, These aren’t people. These are animals.” The basis of what America was formed on does not match the America of today and even early America wasn’t what life for an individual should have been. The idea that we are indoctrinated with unalienable rights for the pursuit of liberty and happiness is not present in the laws of immigration and modern-day America.

Advanced Essay #1: The Idea of Failure

Posted by Jasir Chavis in English 3 · Block · Y Band on Friday, September 20, 2019 at 11:29 am

Introduction: For my essay, I tried to find the meaning and the affects that failure has and can have on a person and their goals. To find this answer I reflected on moments from my life where I had failed and wanted to quit because of my failures. I am needless to say very proud of my essay I think I took major failures from different aspects of my life and attempted to dissect those moments to find the effect that failure had on my life. One way I think my essay could be improved is to go more in-depth into what failure exactly is and how many people perceive it. I think next time my writing will hopefully be better than it is currently.

Tuesday Morning. I woke up at 3 o’clock with a sense of readiness to siege the day playing Ultimate Frisbee with my brothers. I made it to Von Coln field at 6 o’clock, walked through the early muddy dirt-covered field staining my new white shoes, I started throwing hoping I retained some of my practice from over the summer. I threw a flick and as the disk left my hand I felt nothing but sadness it just wasn’t where I needed it to be, I threw a backhand as I turned my hips and released I saw the frisbee leave my hand and curve to the ground. I realized couldn’t do the things I thought I could do and I was embarrassed and I had no idea what I was to do. “If you played last year you are with me and if you’re new go with Mr. Henkel. ̈” I followed Heinkel and the rest of the group hoping I would walk away from a better player who got back into the groove of things.

But I didn’t because at the time in my frame of mind I thought I was wasting my time doing something that for a certain period of time I wasn’t as good as I should have been I couldn’t pull it off, I had failed at something and after a while I wanted to quit because of my failure. I went home trying to search deep within myself to find out what I wanted to do and how I was going to bounce back after this setback. ̈ Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment. Full effort is full victory ̈ Is what appeared on my phone during my moment of self-reflection, As I thought back about my day I had to ask myself where you trying or did you give it you’re all. I took a small failure and I almost quit because for a brief moment I lost faith in myself and my ability to deliver the best that I could give. The more I sat and thought about this small thing that happened to me, I understood that the failures that result in quitting happen to many other people, but sometimes on a much larger scale. It isn’t rare for people to let go of their dreams or goals, quitting after not making it to the place they’re expecting to make it to. I couldn’t count on my fingers the number of times I’ve thought or wanted to quit because of the shame that I thought came with failure, but giving up for me is harder than trying. Failure comes from every aspect of life, work, sports, school, and hobbies, but it’s your failures that make you better. I remember my sophomore year in high school, I was taking Geometry and I remember people telling me that this class wasn’t going to be good or that I wasn’t going to be able to complete the course. Hearing all this I went into class not believing in myself and doubting myself because of what other people were saying. We had taken a standards quiz and I had received my grades for each standard and they were mostly all 3s which indicated I needed more practice and should go get help, I didn’t get the help instead I applied myself and removed the words can’t or won’t. I ended up taking another standards quiz and received close to all 5s. The point I’m attempting to make is that I know and fully understand how people’s words or a person’s actions can affect the belief you have in yourself. The idea of everything being easy is just wrong if you know your worth you’ve gotta go get what you’re worth and not blame your shortcomings on those around you. Recently there was an Ultimate Frisbee tournament the first tournament for all returning players and me, needless to say, was very nervous. As soon as we arrived at Holy Ghost practice began. I threw a flic and although is curved a little it was nice and my backhand that followed was a little too high, but it was straight I was ready to play no matter what setbacks came along with it. ̈Jasir!̈ Leahman shouted. ¨Yes.¨ I nervously said ̈Show it to me.¨ Out of the three games I was in three times which I ran for most of it while I didn’t get the chance to do as much as I would have liked to, I didn’t take it as a loss or as a failure I took it as a building block to improve and to show my worth to my team and myself. I have goals and dreams like everyone else and I fight for them because if you fight hard enough the dreams that you dream and the goals that you now wish to accomplish will eventually come to fruition.

Is This The Age Of Equality?

Posted by Jasir Chavis in English 1 · Giknis · D Band on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 6:52 pm

My You and the World Project,  was Police Brutality finding what was the cause of this problem currently plaguing America to see my earlier post on the issue click the following links https://scienceleadership.org/blog/one_side_of_a_story and https://scienceleadership.org/blog/the_punishment_of_the_people . I found a lot of things during my research, what I found most interesting is in 2017, 457 White Americans, 223 African Americans, and 179 Hispanic Americans were victims of police brutality. I think what some people fail to realise is in the words of 44th President Barack Obama. Obama said. “And it is incumbent upon all of us as Americans, regardless of race, region, faith, that we recognize this is an American problem and not just a black problem or a brown problem or a native American problem, this is an American problem, when anybody in this country is not being treated under the law that’s a problem and it’s my job as president to help solve it.” Misconception creates biases and stereotypes that divide society instead of unifying it.

For my You & The World Agent of change I chose to make a documentary interview like video(Which is not that good) to create a way to get the issue out there and to make our community aware of the situation. I gathered interviews from African American History teacher, Mr.Symonds and Science Leadership Academy Principal Mr. Leahman. From their heartfelt interviews, I saw the care for the people in the community and also the fear that the issue of Police Brutality could affect any of us. Something that stuck out to me while interviewing Mr.Symonds was when we all say good-bye to one another instead of saying “good-bye” or “see you later” we tend to say “stay safe” is this the America we really want to live in? This was the most eye opening part to me doing this interview because I never really paid attention to that. While reading the LA Progressive Newsletter  I found an article called 25 Ways to Stop Police Brutality and I found this ( List Below )

#1: Radically diversify America’s Police Departments

#2: Require American Police to have more training than cosmetologists

#3: Police must be routinely and randomly tested for steroids and other illegal drugs

#4: Bad Apples MUST Be Fired – they are toxic and dangerous

#5: Police must be required to earn 4 year degrees – it changes everything

#6: Policing for profit must become a banned practice. A profit motive must never undergird law enforcement.

#7: We must overhaul 911 – particularly for calls made about the mentally ill. It is the rotary phone of emergency services.

#8: Take women from 12% of police to 50% of police – they are more professional, less brutal, and just as effective

#9: Require cops to live in or near the areas they police. It’s too easy to mistreat strangers.

#10: Communities of color actually need less policing. Start by decriminalizing addiction and petty offenses.

#11: American Police must be regularly tested for racial bias

#12: American Police must be regularly tested and treated for PTSD

#13: Why we must take bad laws on policing all the way to the Supreme Court

#14: Good police officers must actually speak out on bad cops

#15: We must decriminalize mental illness

#16: We need to unleash the full power of body cameras

#17: Police departments must create and enforce reasonable new use of force standards

#19: Police must be banned from using violence based on their imagination of a threat

#20: Every city and state in America must ban racial profiling

#21: Police must be immediately filmed making a statement after each use of force incident

#22: Independent review boards must oversee investigations of police misconduct

#23: Police misconduct cases must be tried by special/independent prosecutors

#24: Police departments which fail to obey the Death in Custody Reporting Act should be cut off from all federal funding.

#25: We must focus our fight against police brutality on the local and state level

After reading this I was given hope, hope that if the justice system tries to effectively use these steps or at least one we can make a change for the betterment of society and societies future. When I first began this project I thought I could never make a change for my topic, but I later found that I was somewhat right and wrong, because it’s one thing to start a change, but if you build a movement off of your belief of change then you have made a change. I learned that I and everyone else around me have a hope or dream of change, but we can’t do it by ourselves we as a society and as a people must find that we are all important and that we all need a change and hopefully with the help of one another we can strive for a change. I feel I could’ve tried to make a better Agent of Change to really make a change, but we live and learn from the choices we make and I’ve learned from mine. Lastly I think if we all are implanted with the knowledge of Police Brutality and ways to avoid we could prevent the rise in numbers, but we must also find a way to inform our government of ways we can create a change for the betterment of us all. It has been an absolute privilege to be given the opportunity to study Police Brutality, but to also try to make a change I thank you all for reading and would like you all to walk away with the question, “Is this really the age of equality?” If you all do that then I was effective in making a change even if it may have been a small one.

 A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is basically the space around the object.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

I saw the cut out pasted it on my construction paper and saw the empty space around it.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

Your able to fill in what was already there.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

I think so because your able to add things that you may now notice without the space.

One side of a story

Posted by Jasir Chavis in English 1 · Giknis · D Band on Monday, March 19, 2018 at 12:44 pm
In my previous blog post I discussed one of the many problems today currently in the world which is Police Brutality. Part of my original research was to go out into the world and gather our own information. I was given the opportunity to interview Officer Mitchell of the 12th district who I was fortunate enough to interview in which he said the following:
Untitled document (4)
I found this Interview to contradict the normal norm of how many people see Police Brutality you see that for question 5 the question was, ¨ Lots of people argue that police brutality is often based on racial bias. What do you think of this?¨ to which he responded, ¨I dont think its racial...I think it is more lack of training and lack of background checks prior to hiring.¨ I found Officer Mitchells response very interesting because his perception of Police Brutality is the opposite to how others view it. Over the course of the Interview I found it very beneficale I was able to learn that contrary to popular belief not all police officers are bad in fact most of them in particular want this agent of change and wants to show that they are just like us human. However with the way things are looking most of society is against authorities they believe there is no level of trust between the two parties we are different and in this case being different is not what we need. In the words of Barack, ¨This is not just a black issue. It’s not just an Hispanic issue. This is an American issue that we should all care about, all fair- minded people should be concerned.¨ The problem with Police Brutality is that it is a frequent thing and with that being said instead of people complaining about Police Brutality we should all try to band together and find a way to change what has happened to our community. An important question that we all must think about is why? why does Police Brutality constantly take place amongst so many people? In my interview with Officer Mitchell he said it might be lack of training and there may be a need of background checks. In conclusion I think Police Brutality is sad, but we as a community must also try to figure out why is it happening and what measures can be taken to prevent it. The Punishment of the people

Annotated Bibliography: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13wTzYcJCdMGtSsozTe1VAUYwjLW3z1r577zruis1Vrw/edit?usp=sharing

One of the many problems plaguing America today is Police Brutality. In the year 2017 1,147 people were killed by police officers in the U.S. statistically speaking the races most affected by police brutality are Caucasians with 392 African Americans with 191 and Hispanics with 159. There are many possible reasons for police brutality such as inadequate training and beliefs on how others should be treated.Image result for police brutality pictures

https://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/US-New-Years-Eve-Protests-in-Chicago-Against-Police-Brutality-20151231-0028.html

Did you know for every 1000 that are killed by police officers 1 officer is convicted of a crime. The Washington Post and Bowling Green University published a vividly thorough informative study about police officers who have killed people in the United States since 2005. The study found that among the thousands who have killed at the hands of cops since that year, only 54 officers have been charged. The Post reported that most officers were cleared or acquitted in the resolved cases. Police brutality not only affects those in the moment of the situation, but the families affected by what can be a horrible moment. Police Brutality is not a new problem that is starting to impact society Police Brutality has progressed for over 53 years and has only continued to get worst. Many stories you have all seen or heard of about police brutality could have all been prevented. In my day to day life I leave the house everyday not in fear, but in caution and in disappointment the men and women who are supposed to live by the motto to protect and serve do the complete opposite, the horrible actions committed by the officers are alienating us from them which makes a bad environment for you and me.

By Africa Jackson on July 9, 2016 / @AfricaJwrites /  Like the Tempest

Police Brutality happens everyday in the year 2017 2% of Police brutality in America was in Pennsylvania, That in total is 23 on December 28 Isaiah Christian Green was killed at the age of 20 for gun possession, On December 27 Dennis Plowden was shot after being stopped by police while driving his car. What I am trying to say is while compared to the other 49 states whose numbers of murders related to Police Brutality are higher than the state of Pennsylvania they all could have been prevented. After the number of shootings happening all around America former United States President Barack Obama said during a press conference, ¨This is not just a black issue. It’s not just an Hispanic issue. This is an American issue that we should all care about, all fair- minded people should be concerned.¨ I want to end this with what could be done to prevent the high number of people killed by police brutality which is rather high. To prevent another horrible death we as a whole have to confront our past as a united people to learn what has to change, some things in life your able to sweep under the rug but this is something that we will one day have to face. Moving on from this I hope you all never forget the many people we sadly lost, We all have to remember to take care of ourselves and others Thanks for reading.

My Family- Tech

Posted by Jasir Chavis on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 12:05 pm
My slide at first to me was the quintessential example of what a slide should not look like. The pictures were unorganized the angles were not symmetrical it just needed a whole revamp. I decided to re do the slide in a more home type style which is why there are frames on the walls. I now knew what I needed to fix to make my slide better. Reading this you will see the time and effort I put into my slide.

Doing research I found that the style of your words along with the background help make a slide a slide. So when picking a color background for my letters I wanted it to resemble the modern family style cursive words with a black or white background. So that is what I incorporated into my slide. Going into this I knew I could make my slide much better than it was previously and that is what I believe I did. Moving on I will now show some of my sources.

Some sources I used to make my slide was the presentation zen link which is basically a website that explains how to make a slide and things that make a good slide. In conclusion my slide was originally how can I say this a mess, but after hearing my fellow peers and Ms.Hull I think I was better equipped to tackle the challenge of revamping my slide. Thanks for reading!

Tech-My Life

My Life
The slide you see here is based off my life hence the name of the title, but also what makes me who I am. I made the slide the way it was because it somewhat fits my personality as something simple, however after reading the Slide Design website I found that everything can be used to your advantage. In my slide I made a collage of my family because that have impacted my life in many ways. The decision to use my family came to me when one day I was just thinking how did I become the person I am today? And the answer was clear to me my family has and still has a huge impact on me and my decision making. My slide is not perfect, but neither am I, I believe my slide represents everything I care about and I now walk away wanting to redesign and redo the entire concept of my slide. In conclusion our assignments class was to make a slide one slide about things that pertain to your life and I did that by showcasing my family.bottom line my family is completely crazy they look harmless and nice, but underneath they are crazy, but they´re also very loving and caring and that was my goal when making this slide Thanks for listening.

1. All the devices on my internet connection are all wireless first there is the phones all the phones are wireless and with the network password connect to my home wifi. Then there are the game systems which are also wireless, however the computer is not wireless and there is a cable that is connected from the computer to the router.

2. I learned how unique networks are plus some conspiracy theories. The OMG moment i had was the bundles that seem like a good deal are not really a good deal.

3. I would tell other people to know all your chords know how your provider operates and think, ¨ Is this bundle really a good bundle?¨.
