Ibn-Haneef Nelson Capstone

Posted by Haneef Nelson in Capstone - Rami - Wed on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 3:26 pm
For my Capstone project I decided to create and run a one day basketball clinic for young children ages 8 through 16. The goal I had set for this project was to give children who may not be as fortunate an opportunity gain new skills and experience. At the clinic we taught the children simple yet effective techniques and skills to try to improve their game. I played for SLA's Varsity Boys Basketball team for my entire high school career and developed from a not very skilled guard to a potential Division Three college athlete. Playing basketball can open doors for people who work to become great. My passion for basketball started in the 8th grade when I attended UPenn's Basketball camp, and I feel that if that passion developed at a younger age I could be potentially be playing Division One Basketball. So with this clinic I looked to help one of the children see basketball as more than a hobby they enjoyed, but to try to possibly make a career with the sport.

Q1 BM - Haneef Nelson

Posted by Haneef Nelson in English 3 - Rami - E on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 1:25 pm

Life In Prison by Stanley “Tookie” Williams, is very inspiring. This point of this book is to educate the youth of the reality of of prisons and what prison life is actually like. Mr.Williams was on death row when he wrote and published this book, he was on death row due to his gang involvement and four murders during two separate robberies. After writing this book and a few others and having a movie made about his life, Stanley was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for his literature and his attempts to reach out to troubled youth. Which caused a controversy because people didn’t appreciate that a man on death row, that has done hundreds of horrible things in his life, is now trying to right his wrongs and is being praised for it.

The Bloods and Crips are the two most notorious and dangerous street gangs on the streets of California. Yet not everyone knows the beginnings of these two group nor their intentions. The Crips were Originated in Los Angeles California in 1971. The groups original purpose was to join together and fight against the neighborhood gangs that were bullying them. Self Defense was the motive, the motive was never to be the bully it was to fight against the bullies, although that’s what the group which became a gang evolved into. Stanley Williams is a cofounder of the notorious street gang. In the preface of this book he speaks on his lack of good influences growing up in a predominately African American neighborhood, all of the people he had to look up to were bad role models and were in jail. Those “role models” gave false depictions of jail on how it was fun and cool so that’s what a young Stanley and all of the other children wanted for their lives. So in this book he is attempting to give the youth what he was not given when he was their age. Each chapter of this book speaks on a different part of the Incarceration system, and how inhumane and dangerous jail really is.

After reading this book and viewing his other work I understand why he was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Yes, he’s done horrible things in his life, and he acknowledges it but what makes him special is, he wants better for everyone else. I love this book because it does not sugar coat anything, and it gives straight facts. Unlike television and movies which portray prison as dangerous but also as fun, as a place you can go lounge around and workout. Throughout this book he refers to the freedoms you have as a free man and where you’re living with your parents compared to living in jail. An example being the section about “Clothing, Telephone, and Mail”, he says “Our mail is read by guards… I can’t stand knowing that some stranger is reading every letter and looking at every photograph that comes in the mail before I do.” I believe the purpose of this book is to inform the world of the harsh conditions of jail but to tell and show youth headed there that it isn't where they want to be. People who would love this book are prison reformist. This book points most of the flaws in the prison system and how it is designed to keep the inmates coming back. In this book Mr. Williams basically says when you’re in prison you either workout, you read and learn, is crazy, or is apart of a gang. The only thing people have in jail to better themselves to try and prevent their re entry to jail after their release is to read books, and even books are limited in jail if you don’t have family members who care enough to buy them for you. Stanley “Tookie” Williams was executed on December 13th, 2005. The last day he spent alive he told Ms. Barbara Becnel about how he although he lived all those years in that concrete cell on death row, his work with the youth provided him with joy inside his heart. This book should be an inspiration to all youth to stay out of trouble.

This book is nonfiction and was first published in 1998 by Morrow Junior Books a division of William Morrow and Company, INC., New York and then was again published in the United States in 2001 by SeaStar Books. This book is a fairly quick read it contains 80 pages of the horrors of what awaits inside prison walls.

Q4 BENCHMARK: Performing “Othello”

Prep Journal #1

(looks to the crowd)’be rubbed this young pimple until he’s ready to pop, (pause and looks away) And now he’s angry. (looks to crowd) Whether he kills Cassio, (little pause) or Cassio kills him, (little pause) or they kill each other, (little pause) it all works in my favor. If Roderigo survives, though, he’ll ask me for all the gold and jewelry that I stole from him and said I gave to Desdemona. (hmm, looks to the crowd) I can’t let that happen. (looks away from the crowd) If Cassio survives(pause),he’s so handsome and well-spoken that he makes me look ugly. (looks to crowd) And besides, the Moor might tell him about my lies about him.—That would be very dangerous for me. No, he’s got to die. Let it be so. I hear him coming. (puts finger on his chin and rubs it as if he is thinking)

Prep Journal #2

In Act 5 scene 2 the secondary character I chose to closely observe is Emilia, so this is “Emilia, The Story”. During the scenes that Emilia are in, first hand observes she Desdemona slowly dying and her husband, Iago lying and getting caught in a lie in front of Othello in order to keep his plot going. During the same act Emilia second handedly observes Desdemona and Othello speaking about death before and right after Othello kills his wife. We understand Emilia’s motivations better when we concentrate only on their scenes because we see how they're thinking specifically and we focus in on it, instead of reading and analyzing and searching for all the other characters wants and needs.

Prep Journal #3

Iago grew up in a one parent house, with just his abusive father. His father never had a steady house or hold hold, as in the way he ran his house. He always had a new girl friend, and lived this life style around the young Iago. Whenever Iago would mention his mother, his father would sit him down and tell him she was just another strumpet and hit him. Iago grew up with out learning how to respect women, but one thing his father did teach him was how to praise the king. He taught him to conform and not obstruct authority, but the young Iago didn't like to conform. Which is why as he aged  didn't change, he was still the same trouble maker, which is why you find him in the situation he's in now.

Prep Journal #4

My scene is the one between Emilia and Iago when she gives him Desdemona's handkerchief. A specific movement or action I have to do during our scene is wave my arms around to sell what I'm saying, and make grins as well as touch my chin as if I'm hinting things to leave Emilia on edge. It leads into the scene because she's out of the "loop" and with me hinting at things, it makes her want to know what I'm talking about, which is a part of the script. A prop I'm going to bring is a cape, because back then I'm assuming nobles wore capes. Also, I think with the way I thought of my character, Iago’s cape will go perfectly because of how I will dramatize what he's saying. I think how each of my members took on their characters personality is going to make our presentation stand out.

Journal #5

"...I will in Cassio's lodging loose this napkin, and let him find it. Trifles light as air are to the jealous confirmations strong as proofs of holy writ: ..." Scene 4 Act Scene 2

In this scene Iago is explaining how he's going to go about his plan to ruin Desdemona's name and make Othello broken hearted.  This is important to the play because this single action of him putting Desdemona's handkerchief in Cassio's room made Othello think she was cheating which is the plot of the play. In my groups scene in Shakespeare's Othello, I delivered my lines in a sneaky and plotting tone but, also in an excited way because he was happy to destroy Desdemona’s name and ruin everyones happiness but also didn't want any one to find out his plan. Yes my groups performance went exactly how we planned and practiced. The consistency during practice made it easy when doing the final performance. I am also very proud of my group and I performance. We all spoke clearly, used the stage directions, and added emotion to what we were saying. I wouldn't change anything about our performance, I'm proud of our performance. Acting out Shakespeare didn't change my understanding of anything because we didn't do anything but reread it and act it out. I got all the analysis parts from reading the book the first time as a class.

Crossing a child's boundaries, from a girl to a woman

Posted by Haneef Nelson in English 2 - Pahomov on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 1:28 pm

Determination is a key to succeeding in life. Can determination push you to cross boundaries? In my podcast my mother, now 38 years old, Tylene Lane, will tell us her story on how crossed the boundaries from a girl/ child to a woman.

REFLECTION:

To cross a boundary is to do something to offend someone, or to do something that you know you aren’t supposed to do. Crossing boundaries for the most part only has negative effects, because it offends someone else. There could be good results for crossing a boundary for you because most of the time you cross them for a personal benefit. I didn’t really learn anything new but I discovered exactly how my mom felt about the situation and how the people around her reacted. No, garageband was really easy and fun to use. I agreed so I just made it a little more interesting and because I couldn’t get the interview from my grandma I had to add more from my mom. I felt a strength was editing it and getting to the point on how she crossed a boundary.

The Change Up

Posted by Haneef Nelson in English 2 - Pahomov on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 2:01 pm
The Change Up

“You need to go get buckets! It’s all about buckets!” I yelled at Jaaz.

“Haneef I get buckets.” Jaaz replied.

“Yea Yea that’s what they all say, I’ll believe it when I see it.” I responded.

My friends and I create different meanings to words and use slang, to us what we’re saying makes sense, but to a person who doesn’t know the lingo they’ll probably be confused. This is one of my many “languages”. I speak basketball. There are times when knowing different languages is beneficial, like when trying to understand people different people and there also times where this language is not necessary like in the business world or when speaking to adults where this informal language would not be accepted. Being around a language long enough, it’ll begin to become something you’re accustomed to. Outsiders to any language, like people around you may begin to understand the language and maybe begin to use it themselves. My little sister proved this to me. One day when I waked in the house after one of my basketball games my little sister approached me and she said,

“Were you frying today??”

“Pause, do you even know what frying is?” I responded

“No Haneef.” She said in a sarcastic tone and smirk on her face

“Don’t get smart with me little girl!” I yelled “ And how do you even know what frying is? Where did you learn this, because I know I didn’t teach it to you.”

“I may be six, but I not slow. I heard you nd your friends say it so many times that I jus figured it out.” She said.

“Ehhh whatever I’m going to my room.”

In the book, From the Borderlands, by Glona Anzonldína it was said that,

“Some of the languages we speak are:

1. Standard English

2. Working class and slang English

3. Standard Spanish

4. Standard Mexican Spanish

5. North Mexican Spanish dialect

6. Chicano Spanish (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California have regional variations)

7. Tex Mex

8. Pachuco (called caló)”

All of the languages mentioned in the small passage above were learned by first being around them due to the family’s constant movement. Each language learned was the norm of that environment and was imperative to learn in order to succeed in that environment. One of my many languages is the one I use when with my friends. This language sounds completely different than with my parents or at a job interview. It’s code switching. This code switching is necessary in order to be respectful, succeed in the business world, and to hold a good reputation with elders; i.e. teachers and other adults. When speaking with my friends I don’t tend to use “proper English”, mostly because I don’t have to and also because different environments require different things in order to be successful.

A perfect example of this is probably is in the person reading this essay, just think. When with your parents think about how you act compared to when you’re with your friends, and then compare both of those to the you act when with your coworkers or classmates and boss or any figure authority. Slang is something that I grew up around, and so it came naturally. Now that I’m older, in different situations I am able to talk “proper” in order to do what society thinks it the right. Whereas in an informal environment it’s the complete opposite, I can speak “improper” without any consequences.

Everybody is raised in a different environment than the next. I’m proud of the way I was raised. The area I grew up in may have effect my “language”. But due to societies need for perfection, my language or what society would call a flaw is hidden under the mask of the persona I use in order to succeed in this world. This is Code switching. Everyone does it; whether it’s to try to succeed in this world by doing what society say is good. Or in interest of being respectful to elders because maybe the way you interact with your friends is not acceptable around adults. Either way, code switching is necessary for any person who believes they want to succeed in more than one environment during their adolescent and adult lives. But when code switching the world will never see the real you. So the choice is for you to make. Either code switch to have a chance to make something of your life in this world, or be yourself in every environment, rebel against the norms of society with the risk of not becoming successful in life.

Self Confidence

Posted by Haneef Nelson in English 2 - Pahomov on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 8:21 am

*Talking to a basketball* *snorts a line of cocaine*
Walking into practice I knew I was the best ability wise and skill wise, I know I can carry a team and showed that in high school and college carrying my team to consecutive titles.
My coach was talking about something and I just cut him off and asked him if he was ready, he asked for what, and yelled fry time. So I took the ball from him and started playing, because I get buckets, I was frying and making everyone look stupid while making my teammates look better than they actually are. Then he had the nerve to stop me while the scrimmage was going and told me that him and the coaches saw enough from me. So I started yelling, I kept asking why until he finally answered my question and his answer was “First of all calm down because we already know what you can do, but just make sure you’re here in 2 days for the championship game against Team USA."
Techincally he didn't answer my question, but I was in shock from what he said. He saw it in my face that I was nervous, and before I could get a word out he said, You heard me, Team USA, and yes, you have so stick Kevin Durant.
I asked him why didn't you tell me this 3 weeks ago, and he calmly replied, I wanted to see what you could do on the fly, just make sure you’re at practice tomorrow like sticking Kevin Durant was a piece of cake.
*leaves the gym*
I don’t think I’m ready … *picks up a 50 pound weight and starts lifting*
I have to be ready! I will be ready I need to more muscle, I need to build up my stamina, I need to practice, I will fry Durant like chicken, and like he’s every other basketball player whose skill don't measure up to mine. I will destroy durant, I will embarrass durant, *lays on the bench press and begins to lift 150 pounds*
*1 Day later*
I’m still not ready and there’s one day away *lifts 190 pound wieghts”
* halucenating about the basketball taking back to him*
“Don’t you think you're pushing yourself too much?”
I'm not pushing myself enough *throws everything on the floor*
Fuck this !
*picks up a needle*
You don't need that, you're ruining your life and your basketball career, the drugs are taking over you
Fuck you ! *takes the empty needle and pops the basket ball then continues to lift weights*
Fuck everybody I can do this !
*takes out another needle and a bottle of alcohol*
I can't do this *starts to cry*
Come back Steve ! Come back ! I'm sorry ! I can't do this by myself ! I'm sorry !
*pulls out a knife and slits his wrist*
As he lies there in the pile of blood his thoughts run rapid, please Steve just come back, im sorry. But Steve never shows.

Negative Space

Posted by Haneef Nelson in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, April 23, 2012 at 1:11 pm
What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
- The negative space is the dark space around the picture.

Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

-In my cut out I saw my negative space by looking at the dark spaces and in my stool drawing I saw negative space in the empty spaces like where there was empty space between the chairs.

Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

- It helps them figure out what exactly what they need to draw.

Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

-Yes because it easier for me to see what I'm drawing.

Tu vs. Ud

Posted by Haneef Nelson in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Friday, October 21, 2011 at 3:42 am
The words Tú and Ud mean the same thing; "and you". The difference between them is one is for a formal situation and the other for an informal situation.
Tú= informal (eee-to)
Ud= formal (oo-sted)
These terms are used for the fowling phrases and more;
¿Cómo estás tú?

¿Cómo está ud?
¿Cómo te llamas tú?
¿Cómo se llama ud?
¿De dónde eres tú?
¿De dónde es ud?
Tú
Ud

How to Ask and Tell the Weather.

In order to ask and tell the weather you have to know the basics.
The way you ask the wether is:  ¿Qué tiempo hace hoy?
(kay- tee-im-po-acce-hoy)

These could be the fowling responses

Before you say any of the responses you say hace

(Mucho) Frio 0°

(Mucho) Calor 100°

Fresco 50°

(Muy) Buen tiempo :)

(Muy) Mal tiempo :(

(Mucho) Sol ☼

(Mucho) Viento ☄

Está Nublado ☁

Está Lloviendo ☂

Está Nevando ❄
