Ijustice Avery Capstone

Posted by Ijustice Avery in Capstone · Giorgio/Shagin · Wed on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 10:10 am

Baseball has always been a big part of my life, so I wanted my capstone to have something to do with baseball. After some thinking I decided to have a youth baseball clinic to try to give the new young players things to work on to make them better players. I organized it so I could have a younger group which consisted of kids from grades 3-5 and an older group which consisted of kids from grades 6-8. After deciding what my capstone would be and who it would be open to, there was a long process that followed so my capstone would be complete.

First, I had to find a spot to hold my event. My old baseball coach has an indoor baseball facility so I felt like that would be the best place to have it. To let people know about my capstone I had to do some advertising. I thought it would be best for me to make a flyer and pass it out to various teams and parents. I did some research and found out when teams would be practicing and where. After I gathered this information I went around to these practices and gave my flyer to team coaches and parents and I explained what my event would consist of. I also had people myself included post about the event on social media. After the advertising aspect of my capstone was complete, the organizing part had to start. I had to design what I would be doing in my event. I did some research and found some good drills for youth players and I found a way to incorporate them into my event. I realized that with all the things I would be doing it would be a lot for one person to handle. So I asked some of my friends who play baseball to help me run the event. I continued to advertise for my event until the week before I held it. After all of that the only thing that I had to do was hold my event.

Capstone Annotated Bibliography

“5 Tips For Running A Great Baseball Camp.” Baseball Brains, 21 Nov. 2016, www.baseballbrains.net/5-tips-for-running-a-great-baseball-camp/.

This source could be very helpful for the organization part of my clinic. It basically tells you the steps to follow to hold  successful baseball clinic or event. Some of the things it told me to do was get plenty of people committed to help you during your event, do not over price it, reach out to baseball organizations in your area to promote the event, plan out every part of your event and know how much time you have. I find that this source is reliable because the organization that wrote this article holds baseball clinics of their own.

“10 great hitting tips for youth baseball players.” Youth1, 13 Mar. 2017, youth1.com/baseball/1144317823-10-great-hittingtips-youth-baseball-players#.

This sources provides information on hitting. Hitting is going to be one of the focus points in my baseball clinic so this source can be very useful. I could teach the player everything I know on hitting and give them some tips from this source. This source can also tell me what to look for in a hitter swing. Any small cretics can be crucial in a hitters swing. Hitting a baseball in one of the hardest things to do in sports so with any tips and drills will be very useful for a hitter.

Aacap. Children And Sports, www.aacap.org/aacap/families_and_youth/facts_for_families/Facts_for_Families_Pages/Children_And_Sports_61.aspx.

This source focuses on all the positive things that children gain from playing sports. I choose this source because it provides information that relates to my capstone and I would like to learn as much as I can about the positive and negative effect that sports has on children just to get a better understanding of my topic. This source also talks about how the parents have to be involved with their child’s sports career. A parent or parents plays a very important role in their child’s development in sports

“Defensive Linup Strategies For Youth Baseball.” PRO TIPS by DICK'S Sporting Goods, 11 May 2017, protips.dickssportinggoods.com/sports-and-activities/baseball/defensive-lineup-strategies-for-youth-baseball.

I found this source very useful because it talks about what to look for in a player to fill each position in the field and where to put them in the batting lineup. This can help me point out things in players that I see and I could give them advice on where I think they would fit best on a baseball field. This source focuses on the defensive end of baseball. My clinic is going to be mostly on fielding and hitting so this source will come in handy.

Miner, Julianna W. “Why 70 percent of kids quit sports by age 13.” The Washington Post, WP Company, 1 June 2016, www.washingtonpost.com/news/parenting/wp/2016/06/01/why-70-percent-of-kids-quit-sports-by-age-13/?utm_term=.a369c1641bd3.

This source talks about why kids usually quit sports by the time they are a teenager. I choose this source because the things that this article says are the things I should try to avoid. According to this source one of the main reasons kids quit sports is because it is not fun because it is not designed to be. With that being said I want to try to make my clinic serious but also have fun parts. I think this will be a very good learning experience for the kids and also for myself.

“Nutrition tips for youth baseball players, families.” Triple Crown Sports News, www.triplecrownsportsmedia.com/nutrition-tips-for-youth-baseball-players-families/.

This source will be useful because it will help me with the teaching aspect of my baseball clinic. This source focuses on the nutrition of youth athletes. This could also be a learning experience for me. Teaching the young players about nutrition, drills, fitness, and the mental aspect of the game could also help me and the way I play. I could use some of the things I teach to improve my game.

GraphX, http://coyote6.com Coyote6. “One Reason So Many Youth Baseball Players Are Injured.” Baseball Think Tank, 22 Sept. 2017, baseballthinktank.com/one-reason-so-many-youth-baseball-players-are-injured.

I selected this source because this source talks about how most youth players get injured. It also talks about how to prevent injuries for youth players. I think this source will be useful because not only do I want to run drills and help kids with their baseball skills but I also want to teach them new things and how to take care of their bodies and stay healthy. I want to teach them certain stretches for the parts of the body that baseball stresses the most. This source provides very quality information on how youth athletes get hurt and how to prevent injuries.

“Preseason Training for Youth Baseball Players : Strength & Conditioning Journal.” LWW, journals.lww.com/nsca-scj/Fulltext/2013/06000/Preseason_Training_for_Youth_Baseball_Players.9.aspx.

This source provides me with a scheduled training routine that would be helpful for youth baseball players. The workouts that are provided focus on one specific body part or muscle group related to baseball each day. For example you train your rotator cuff on monday, then on tuesday you train your legs. This source also provide you with some drills you could do to get your arms stronger so you can throw harder. These all are things that I could use or mention in the baseball clinic that I will hold. I found this source very helpful because it really relates to what I would be teaching.

Thomas, Jessica L. Youth sport programs: an avenue to foster positive youth development. areas.fmh.utl.pt/~arosado/Repositorio/ficheiros/LONGTERM/Ref11.pdf.

This source provides information about the positive and negative effects of sports on the youth. With my capstone revolving around kids and sports I thought it would be a good thing for me to read about what kids turn to and what pushes them away about sports. I found it very useful how the author of this article went into detail on the positives and negatives that kids encounter while playing sports. To be specific they mentioned Emotional psychological development, social development, adult influences, program design, intellectual development, and many more factors.

TroskyBaseball247. “TroskyBaseball247.” YouTube, YouTube, www.youtube.com/user/TroskyBaseball247/videos.

For my capstone this source could be very useful. It is a youtube channel named “TroskyBaseball247.” The channel is run by coach Nate Trosky who is a baseball instructor. The channel consist of a lot of baseball drills and workouts that I could use in the clinic that I will hold for my capstone. This doesn’t only help me by providing me with things that I can use in my clinic but it also helps me on how to present and explain those drills and only things to the player that will participating in my baseball clinic

Podcast Interview Essay

Posted by Ijustice Avery in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 9:37 am

Growing up in this generation has shaped me to be the person I am today. Many aspects of my life have been affecting due to many of my personal experiences. Although my father and I grew up and different generations many things have stayed the same and others have changed drastically. The values and what is accepted of us as people has largely impacted young males such as myself and my father. I wanted to interview my father because he grew up during the 1960’s, a time much different than the one I’m growin up in. I wanted his perspective on the visible changes in society.

I started the interview by asking him what his childhood was like and how the standards in his generation influenced his decisions he made. He expressed his feelings regarding the environment in his household. He spoke on the void that exists in many modern day families.

He talked about how families held unity as a number one priority. They didn’t take for granted the time they shared whereas families today rarely eat dinner together. Time was very important and crucial to the growth of children but now “Kids ain’t even kids today. We had a chance to be children because when you lose your childhood you lose everything.” In today’s world, children don’t value their childhood they want to grow up so fast. And those children that do value it are robbed of their childhood due to their personal circumstances. Most kids are in a rush to have the liberties and freedom of being of age but not the responsibilities. You look forward to 18 because you’re “legal” and can make more of your own decisions, but most people are barely able to support themselves on their own.

Towards the end of the interview my father talked about the the violent aspect of society today. He spoke on how fights have changed throughout the years.  He explained how back when he was growing up the worst that could happen to you would be getting beat up, but nowadays there is a probability that you could be killed. “If we had disagreements we didn’t shoot each other” He even said that back in his day after a fight people would sometimes become cool with each other, whereas people today hold on to problems which just lead to more conflict. “Kids today seem to have no regard or respect for life, kids today take a life how they would take a shower”

I asked my father about the major changes that happen in his life through the change of time. He concluded that he spent most of his finding out what his place was in the world, but he likes the person he is as an adult. He sees life through his own eyes, his children's eyes, and his wife’s eyes. Having all three of these perspectives makes a big difference between how he was as a young adult versus now. He lives life through them. One thing that my father said that resonated with me at the end of the interview was “the things that meant something to me don’t mean anything now.”I found this to be the brutal truth and reality. So many aspects of life are taken for granted by this generation. I hope I can can keep the morals and practices my father instilled in me so they are not forgotten.

Survival Base on Environment

Reflection
With my 4th adavnced essay I wanted to focus on gangs.  I wrote about how with all the violence and conflict going on in the world, kids pay attention and get involved in gangs.  This essay was a lomg process for me.  It took a lot of editing and people looking over my work.  I am proud of this essay and I think it is my strongest essay of the year.

In today’s world violence is portrayed as something humans become accustomed become accustomed to overtime. We see violence in all different mediums; social media, tv, music, and even as we walk out our front doors.  Violence is made out to seem like something we can’t escape.  As much as people hate to acknowledge it, It's inescapable.  At times it appears that people are excited to be involved rather than to stay away. Whether they physically involve themselves, record it, comment about it, its catches the attention of many. With all the negativity spreading around the globe, the youth of the world sees what is going on and they tend to get involved as well. At a young age children are like sponges, they tend to soak up everything around them; good and bad. Therefore a child’s environment is crucial to his/her growth. They haven’t quite developed discernment skills. Therefore sometimes they do things in the moment for temporary enjoyment forgetting their are long term effects. For example, kids who come from broken homes, and struggle in school tend to have have a higher risks of joining a gang. Coming from broken homes deprives children of real love and unity, which forces some to fill the void with whatever and whoever Young kids see gang members receiving respect  from people that are around them and they see the fear they can instill in others. Kids admire this and try to emulate it . They want to be like them and possess  the power and respect that they have. Eventually young ones find a way to get involved, either becoming a member or trying to build their status amongst their peers.

Most youths who are involved with gangs get exposed to drugs and alcohol at a young age.  Overtime what was once curiosity is turned  into a habit.he abuse of drugs and alcohol in many low income communities is common.  It is a coping mechanism and for some kids a way to gain popularity. Getting involved in drugs and alcohol doesn’t  necessarily have to mean that they consume them. Gang members tend to start to sell drug to make a profit and create connections. Selling drugs can lead to criminal offenses, which in the end makes life a whole lot harder.

There is also the instances where kids or teenagers are not in a gang but he/she was exposed to a gang by just living in the area. Now this person most likely will not be able to travel through rival gang neighborhoods without conflict. Just because someone lives where a gang is from, they are automatically guilty by association and affiliated with whatever gang is in their community. Knowing them becomes a protection or even worse a danger Other gangs could see them and assume that they are way more heavily involved than what it appears to be. Someone who knows someone involved in a gang always can be put in risky situations. For example, they could get in their car one day for a ride, but mistakenly be shot because that gang member was a target.

With all the violence and conflicting issues going on in the world today some think that kids are not watching and listening when actually that is all that they’re doing. Instead of beating the youth’s ears with problems and allowing them to continue,  we should be broadcasting how to fix them. When people are young we tend to follow after the popular things. So, if kids are around violence, and hear about conflict then they are more likely to get involved in it. We want to shift the focus and make ways to fix the problems more popular. In conclusion, acknowledging the negatives and trying to create positivity in communities where youths have nothing but the streets will promote visible progress.

Advanced Essay #3

Posted by Ijustice Avery in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 10:17 pm

When speaking about race or ethnic background in any conversation, the room always seems to sit still. It is as if an imaginary piece of tape forces lips to shut and ones’ task is to find the strength and courage to break the seal. Race is one of those topics that holds back another's’ thoughts and opinions, filling the room with an uptight vibe. In most cases when specifically speaking about black and white races, they are their own quantity. It seems as though people with biracial backgrounds that origin from African American and Caucasian parents are forced to choose to be identify as either an African American or Caucasian individual and such being that there is no in between.

A prime example comes from the forty-fourth President of the United States, Barack Obama. Obama’s parents comes from array of ethnic backgrounds. Being that his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, is an Irish-American and his father, Barack Obama Sr., born African, that makes President Obama equally half Irish-American and African. Though, society says otherwise. Barack Obama is not identified as “the first biracial President of the United States” he is said to be “the first black President of the United States”.

Coming from a biracial home myself with a black father and white mother, I was told that when you have a black father and white mother then the children are considered black, so with that being said I am an African American. Growing up I would always struggle telling people my race. It is not that I did not feel comfortable, it was that their reaction would shock me in a way.  If a person asked what race do I identify as, I would simply say, “I am black,” with no hesitation. And in an instant, that person’s expression would change.  They would either respond with, “No you are not, you are a white boy. ” or “...if you are black why is  your skin so white?” Yet hearing their responses, I come to my senses to automatically compare myself to someone who is known with the same struggle. Steph Curry, for instance. With Steph Curry having both his parents African American, he just has light skin. Therefore, it is possible for African Americans to have very light skin.

So growing up and being biracial I would not say it was hard for me but I definitely felt different.  My neighborhood is mixed with black and white people.  I went to a mostly black school, there were maybe eight or nine white kids in the entire school that I went to.  So coming from a biracial family I feel like that set me apart from the other kids I went to school with.  My physical appearance has stood out as well.  Going to a mostly black school and having light skin and reddish hair immediately set me apart.  Difference doesn’t bother me its something that i have gotten use to through my life, I just wish society could embrace different the same way I do.

Film Review: Finding Dory

dory-list
dory-list

“Finding Dory” is a sequel to “Finding Nemo” a movie where a clownfish named Marlon travels across the ocean to find his son Nemo who has been taken by scuba divers.  Along the way he runs into a fish named Dory who suffers from short term memory lost and travels the sea with Marlon on search for his son.  “Finding Dory” has the viewer jumping between emotions just as “Finding Nemo” did.  In the second installment of the the franchise we see our favorite forgetful blue bodied yellow tailed fish on the hunt for her home and family.  She is joined on her journey by Marlon a clownfish that we were introduced to in “Finding Nemo” and his son Nemo.  In their travels across the ocean to seek out Dory’s long lost family the puzzle pieces that happen to be Dory’s memory start to come together.  They come across old friends and make new friends, and go through a life threatening situation.  With her unsuspected smart choices and good wit Dory gets a lot further in her quest than anyone could’ve expected.  I recommend everyone to see this heart warming movie that puts you on a rollercoaster of emotion and if you have not seen the first installment of the franchise “Finding Nemo”, that is a must see as well.

This movie passes the requirements for both the Mako Mori test and the Bechdel test.  For the bechdel test there are two female characters that have a conversation about something other than a man.  This movie also passes the mako mori test because the main character is a female and the movie tells her story, therefore she has her own narrative and it does not support a male’s story.  Dory is an unexpectedly strong character who discovers her problem and figures out a way to fix it.

Finding Dory passes my gender bias test by during somewhere in the franchise the female character supports the male’s story and the male character supports the female’s story.  In Finding Nemo, Dory supports Marlon’s story by tagging along with him and helping him find his son, but in Finding Dory Marlon and his son Nemo help Dory on her journey so therefore they support her story .

Learn From Each Other

Posted by Ijustice Avery in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 10:09 am

Intro

My goal for this essay was to express how language plays a big part in the division of our country.  If we could cut down on the judgement of the way people speak, we could learn a lot more from each other and establish better relationships.

Where you live or where you are from plays a big part in literacy or language in general.  Traveling to different places and meeting people from different places can make one realize that there is different forms of language that live inside one language itself.

“The mission statements of major publishers are littered with intentions, with their commitments to diversity, to imagination, to multiculturalism, ostensibly to create opportunities for children to learn about and understand their importance in their respective worlds.”

This quote from “The Apartheid of Children’s Literature” to me is saying how writer try to pick up different forms of literacy or different forms of language to make their writing more interesting.  It’s crazy how people will read a book or poem or an article that has language in it that they don’t understand but they try their hardest to because it is a good read.  Or, a movie that has different forms of language in it that they don’t understand but they try to understand because they heard it is a good movie.  But in person or in reality when it comes to hearing these different forms of a language that we know very well the will to understand or learn is nonexistent.

I go to Ocean City MAryland every summer with my family.  It is a vacatio city and people come there from Philly, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, etc, so you are bound to meet some people from different areas of the east coast.  This year when I was there.  I would play basketball everyday no matter if it was in the morning, afternoon, or under the lights I would play either by myself or with the people I was on vacation with.  On rare occasions I would have the court to myself but most of the time there would be people on the court so I would only have half of the court.  One day i went to play and there were people on one half of the court so I went to the other half just to shoot around.  Maybe like 10 or 15 minutes after I get to the court I hear “Aye what it is dummy?” I turned around confused because I thought he was talking to me but I didn’t respond.  He say “you wanna run a game?” I say “yeah let's get it”.  But I was still confused so I asked him what he said before to get my attention and he said “I said aye what it is dummy”.  I never heard anyone say that before so I had to ask him where he was from.  It turns out that he was from Baltimore and “what it is dummy” is a way to get someone’s attention in Baltimore slang.  He was confused with the word “jawn” when I used it and I explain to him the “jawn” is basically a noun… It can represent anything.  What I’m saying is we can learn from each other and slang is one of those things that the people that are not used to it will not understand understand.  So instead of staying in the blue and being fine with not understanding, ask questions and live up to the saying “learn something new everyday” it has its benefits.

In conclusion, when people don’t understand or are not used to something we tend to shut it out completely, and language can be one of those things.  When we hear someone use a couple words that we do not hear as often or a couple phrases that we do not understand, we categorize people based off the way they speak.  Instead of dividing people on the way they speak, we should look at it as a learning experience.  We all come from different places so why not learn from each other?  We look at other big topics that divide the people of our country like republicans and democrats, stereotypes, and other things like that, but we don’t look at the little things like language that play a big part in dividing our country without a lot of people even knowing it.  With that being said, if we worry more about what is being said instead of how we say it, there just might not be as much division in our country.

Advanced Essay #1 - What Will You Remember Me By?

Posted by Ijustice Avery in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 6:30 pm

Introduction This paper focuses on my legacy, how I want to be remembered. I included my thoughts on how I think people view me or think of me vs how I view and think about myself. I am proud of this piece but I also feel like I could of went into more detail in my body paragraphs. I am most proud of my conclusion. This is where I talked about how I want to be remembered and I feel like it summed the whole paper up nicely and it was a good way to finish.

Advanced Essay #1

“Hey, umm excuse me… Can I touch your hair?” random people sometimes ask me. I usually respond with a light chuckle and say “Yeah, go ahead.” It’s like I’m programmed because after I hear those words, I respond the exact same way every time. After people feel my hair they always ask me, they always ask “Do you dye your hair?”. And I respond “No, not at all, this is all natural.”. When I say that some people are a little shocked so the next question that people usually ask is “Who in your family do you get your red hair from?”. Honestly I don’t know how to respond to this question because nobody in my family has red hair, nobody that I have met at least. So I just tell people that I get it from my mom, her hair is the closest to red so I just tell them that.

As people run their fingers through my hair, I can’t fight to think like I don’t know this person at all and I don’t know where their hands have been, so what pushes us to say yes to these questions that people we don’t even know ask us? I guess it is just something that naturally happens. Maybe we are just being naturally polite or we just think to ourselves “say yes just to get it over with” without even knowing it. Not all people are like this or think this way but this is what is going through my mind when I get into this situation. Saying “yes” to a simple question like that just seems like the right thing to do, like it isn’t causing any harm and saying yes just gets it over with faster. On the other hand saying “no” just doesn’t feel right. I feel like that kind of just makes it awkward for the both of us and it gives you a bad vibe. Some people are like that where they just wanna go about their day not being bothered.

When people ask me if they can touch or rub my hair, I’m not going to to lie, I kind of like it. I guess it just makes me feel like I’m different, and there is something about my physical appearance that stands out from other people. Unless there are people out here asking everyone if they could touch your hair, than that is a different story, but I highly doubt somebody would do that. But at the end of the day it kind of makes me feel good when someone asks me that question. It makes me feel like they see something in me that don’t really see in anybody else or at least something they don’t see too often and that makes me feel good about myself. There are also the people who make comments about my hair. “You have a beautiful head of hair” is the most common one. I also get “I love the color of your hair”. Hearing compliments like this from people I don’t know, just brings a smile to my face

I feel like my hair is the feature that people think of when my name is brought up. Like if my name comes up in a conversation people think to themselves like “oh the tall kid with the long red hair”. Of course being the tall kid with red hair isn’t the only thing I want to be remembered by, because that is just something that stands out with my appearance. I want to be remembered by who I was as a person and the things I like to do. Someone who could easily lighten up the mood and put a smile on people’s faces with no trouble at all. The guy anyone could come to if they needed advice or if they just needed to talk to somebody. And at an athletic standpoint, I want to be remembered as a great baseball player because I dedicate my life to the sport. But most importantly I want to be remembered as a rising photographer of Rough Cut Productions… Nah I’m just kidding.

Leadership

Posted by Ijustice Avery in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 1:38 pm

What is a leader?  Well this question can be answered many different ways.  Leadership can change with whatever situation a person finds themself in.  Leaders can differ from an explorer leading his/her men/women through the jungle, or the captain of a sports team leading their teammates to a championship.  Every leader has a vision and it is that leader’s job to inspire people to make them see that vision as well so they can gain followers.  People expect and rely on certain leaders to take charge and accept success and failure personally.

In the book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding there seems to be a battle of who is going to become head honcho between the characters Ralph and Jack.  When another character named Piggy finds a conch shell on the island they were stranded on, Ralph blows into the shell and the sound attracts other kids on the island.  “But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch.”(22)  In this scene of the novel, the conch is giving Ralph power and authority.  It also develops a the thought that the best thing for them right now to have is a leader.  In the boys’ heads the conch is setting Ralph apart from everyone else, and this is the reason why Ralph becomes the leader over Jack.

This same kind of situation can relate to any sports team in a way.  On sports teams there can be one one leader, or several leaders that play different parts on the team.  The role of a locker room leader would be to get everybody pumped and hyped to play the game and make sure everybody is ready.  Where a performance leader would take control during the game and most of the the they want the game to be in their hands.  Or there could just be one leader.  This role brings the most pressure and all depends on how you deal with it.

In the novel, situations start to come up that test Ralph’s leadership.  A dead pilot has fallen from the sky and as the boys see the body but don’t know what it is.  The minds of the paranoid kids disguise the body to be “the beast.”  The tension of what it could be was eating away at the group, so they all decided to go hunt the so called beast.  The boys were hunting the beast and they decided to stop and reevaluate their decision.  But Ralph took the responsibility of being a leader and told the group that he would go after the beast himself.  When Ralph made the decision to go himself, that really stuck with the group and it showed them that he was being a true leader and taking on that responsibility that comes with taking charge.

The same concept applies to sports.  No matter what sport it is no matter if it is basketball, baseball, soccer, etc the star player or captain of the team wants to be in the win or lose situation.  They are willing to go into either success or failure situations head on and deal with the outcome no matter what it is.

A true leader takes charge and they know what they want.  They have a goal that they have to accomplish and they inspire people to have that goal as well.  A real leader doesn’t work for him/herself, they always think for the team.  Kobe Bryant once said “The topic of leadership is a touchy one.  A lot of leaders fail because they don’t have the bravery to touch that nerve or strike that chord.  Throughout my years, I haven’t had that fear.”  You can’t be afraid to take charge and be a leader.  You have to be able to face the consequences that come with being a leader.  If you don’t have what it takes to deal with failure you don’t have what it takes to be a leader.

Confusion for a Conclusion

Posted by Ijustice Avery in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 7:52 am

I can’t believe it, I’m so confused.  I just met a scout from the Pittsburgh Pirates, right after the playoff game. He told me that they have been scouting me for years now and I didn’t even know!  He told me they want me come down and play for one of their Minor League teams.

Before that day, I have been planning on going to a well known college, Notre Dame.  I talked to their coach and he said he feels like I would be a perfect fit for that team and I’m exactly what he has been looking for.  I don’t mean to brag but, an outfielder who can play all infield position and hit.  Who wouldn’t want me to play for them, and I was looking forward to going to college. I love the campus and ever since I visited, it has just had a grip on me.  And most importantly a college education is important isn’t it?  I know my mom wants me to get my education.  All she has been talking about me going to college and how proud of me she is.  I would feel bad if I let her down by not going to college like I said I would.  But when she hears about the opportunity I have, won’t she still be proud and happy for me?

Going to the MLB has been my mission since I was 8 years old.  My dream has always been having my name and number on the back of a professional team’s jersey, no matter what team it is.  The thrill of just getting to play on the same field with the same people I watched on tv and looked up to will be enough for me.  If i were to make it pro, I will become an inspiration to myself.  By me playing with the superstars of the game I love, will inspire me to work hard enough to become the best player on any field that I walk on.

This is my chance!  If I go to college who knows if this chance will present itself again.  The opportunity to go to school will always be there.  But this only happens once in a lifetime.  Of course if I chose the MLB I will have to play in the Minors first.  Then, my main focus will be to prove that I am Major League material.

(Pause)

Whenever I need help I always go to my dad.  He is the one person I can always go to if I need great advice. He never makes the decision for me but he puts strong thoughts in my head so I can do it myself.  He told me to follow my heart, because either way I go, I will still be taking a big jump into a new part of my life.  He told me if I think I have what It takes to play on that level, then go play ball.  I knew exactly what he meant.  He wasn’t saying if I think I have the talent and ability to play pro baseball go do it.  He was saying if I’m strong enough mentally then go do it.  He was saying I can’t let the money, the popularity, and the women that come with a major league contract get to my head.  And I think I can do that.  NO!  I know I can do that.  I’ve worked to hard to be stopped right in my tracks.

So I think I made my decision.  I will be taking my talents to the MLB.  Man I always wanted to say that.  But, I will not only be going for me.... I will be going for my parents.  I will be able to provide for my parents and give them back all the love that they gave me growing up and show them how much I really care and appreciate them.  That has to be the best feeling in the the world, to tell your parents they can stop working because I gotchu now.

But now here comes the moment of truth.  Telling my mom my decision.  Here I go….

Slang to Poetry

Posted by Ijustice Avery in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 7:31 am

“Use correct grammar.  I’m tired of that slang, you need to speak proper English.  Where do you think slang is going to get you?  No professional baseball players talk with slang.  You need to sound like you’re educated.”

“Ok mommom, I will try to speak correctly from now on.  I don’t mean any disrespect but, I don’t see how you expect me to just drop the way I speak.  I have been speaking this way my whole life, it is not just something I can forget about.”

My grandmother is kind of strict on “talking correctly.” I don’t like getting told that I don’t speak correctly because it is the way I talk and I don’t want that to change.  I want people to accept the way I speak, and not criticize me for it.  Clearly everybody in the world speaks differently.

I know that a lot of people go back and forth with speaking differently to their friends and the way they talk to their parents, but I can honestly say that I speak with my friends the same exact way I speak to my parents. Except, I don’t curse at my parents.  My dad sort of speaks the same way I do, so it does not bother him. My mom just accepts it and she does not care as long as she can understand me. A regular conversation with my dad would be something like this…

“Yuurrrpppp, Pops where you at?”

“Wassup, how was school”

“No bad, same old same old.”

“Yeah I feel you.  I been chillin all day yamean.”

“Yeah I wish I could do that. (Chuckles) But wassup with dinner doe?”

When I talk to my friends we usually greet each other like this…

“Yuurrrpppp.  Wassup bro.”

“Chillin… Yo bro I’m hungry.”

“You tryna go to the store?”

“We out!”

The way I talk doesn’t change based on who I’m speaking to.  Of course when  I’m speaking to an adult or one of my elders I will speak more polite but when I’m talking to my parents and friends my speech is mostly the same.

I grew up in North Philadelphia. I lived in the same house my entire life. I’ve never lived in an area where there has been different accents or different forms of slang.  Even though I have been to places where they don't speak the same as me, I have never stayed around it long enough for it to have an effect on me.  At a young age, hearing how my parents spoke, and listening to how people spoke around me, kind of formed the way I speak and the terminology I use.  I personally believe that whatever you grow up hearing or whatever you grow up around will form the way you speak.  As much as people try to change the way they speak, they always have a way to go back to their roots.  Say someone gets in an argument, I hear people say things like this all the time…. “I tried to be nice and polite but they kept pushing me and the North Philly side of me came out.” or the Brooklyn side or the Oakland side etc.  So people can try to change the way they speak but there is always a way that they find themselves right back to their roots.

People say I use “ghetto” English, and they have the right to voice their opinion, but to me it is not ghetto English. To me it is normal English and I’m sure a lot of people think the way they speak is normal English too.  I just think that if their is so many forms of a language, no matter it be English, Spanish, German etc. how can there be one type of a language that is normal or regular?  Language as a whole is evolving, and we as people can’t just be stuck in one time zone and try to be normal, we need to evolve with it.

ILP

In my ILP I am volunteering at my old school.  At my old school there is this program called Playworks that gets kid outside of class for 45 minutes to get involved in some kind of physical activity.  Quran and I are assistant coaches and we help the head coach with whatever she needs.  We usually work with the younger kids but we work with the upper grades too.  I like it so far and hope to enjoy it for the rest of my experience.

PRIDE of an ATHLETE

Posted by Ijustice Avery in English 1 - Giknis - A on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 6:23 am

In my 1st Blog Post I introduced my topic for my project which was Performance Enhancing drugs (PEDs).  I talked about the effect that certain PEDs have on your body and my opinion on Performance Enhancing Drugs. In my 2nd Blog Post I included a chart that talks about the usage of drugs by Division 2 Colleges.

I feel like people don't take the usage of Performance Enhancing Drugs as seriously as they should.  It is a big issue in pro sport, college, and sometimes even in high school.  They're aren't many people out here doing anything to stop it, they just react when it happens.  But, for my agent of change I decided to make wristband that say ¨Natural Athlete¨ on the outside and ¨No Steroids¨ on the inside.  I gave these out to my teammates and coaches.  People from other teams are coming up to me and teammates asking where they can get one.  I feel like the word is getting out about my agent of change, and that was my intention.

This is a very important topic to me.  I am really passionate about this because I want to play baseball in College and hope to eventually play Pro Ball.  So if i make to these level of competition, I don't want to play against or with fair chances.

I will never use Performance Enhancing Drugs.  I would never put my body through that.  I put in hard work and dedicate myself to the sport of baseball so I can always get better and progress as a player and a leader on my team.  What image would I give the rest of my team as leader if I cheat by using drugs to give myself a boost and unfair chance.  And sometimes it's about pride.  You have to respect

Keeping It Real

Posted by Ijustice Avery in English 1 - Giknis - A on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 9:45 pm

In my First Blog Post, I gave you a basic summary of what Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) are.  I also talked about why they are used, the risk you take when you use them, what i think about the topic, and a few side effects if you take some certain PEDs.

I have recently come across a story on CNN News that talks about Performance Enhancing Drugs in sports dating back to 1976.  It also has timeline about the evolution of PEDs in sports history.  This website has been very helpful to me giving a lot more information about my topic that I needed to know.

The interview that I wanted to do didn't work out the way I wanted it to.  I couldn't find anyone to talk to that specifically specializes in my topic.  That made it difficult because to make up for not having an interview, I did a lot more research and found graphs of College player who used PEDs.

I have struggled with some things along the way with this project such as time, not getting an interview as planned, and trying to figure out an agent of change.  Time has not been on my side at all with this project.  My schedule has been full and it has been hard to find time to work on this.  I put myself in a hole where I didn't get to work on this as much as I wanted to but, it still took up a lot of time.  And not getting an interview and thinking of an agent of change just added more unwanted time.  I didn't think I was going to have to put as much work into this as I did.  But, it's all working out and I'm happy about that.

For my agent of change I am ordering wristbands and I am going to have members of my baseball team and other teams wear them.  Hopefully the word will get out and I will have a lot of supporters wearing these wristbands.

Real Heart Over Fake Talent (PEDs)

Posted by Ijustice Avery in English 1 - Giknis - A on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 8:33 pm

Performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) are used by people who want to have a competitive edge.  Most of the time these drugs are used by bodybuilders and professional athletes.  The satisfaction of becoming a star on a team or representing your country becomes too great and PEDs is what opens the door for these athletes to shine.  By taking these drugs you are giving yourself an advantage over players by using a substance that improves your abilities to perform.  As good as these drugs sound, there are a lot more bad qualities than there are good.

Most people think that PEDs just consist of steroids but they are wrong.  There is a drug by the name of Erythropoietin that increase the count of someones red blood cells.  Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body, so if one can increase his/her red blood cell count, there will be more oxygen going through ones muscles.  This is just one example and there are many more that are more effective.

The people who use PEDs are putting their bodies at risk for a temporary boost of performance.  The effects of these drugs can differ between genders and different drugs have different effects on the body.  Anabolic steroids come with severe physical side effects such as acne, high blood pressure, risk of tendinitis, and more.  If one consumes Gonadotropin side effects could include joint pain, muscle weakness, diabetes, and fluid retention.  Taking these drugs effects someones in a lot more bad ways than good.

This is a very touchy topic to me because me being an athlete, all I want is a fair chance.  For someone to cheat and use anything for them to get an unfair edge sickens me.  Me personally I will never use any type of unfair advantage to get myself better.  I believe the only way you will ever progress is if you show hard work and dedication to whatever you want to get better at, no matter what it is or what level you are on.

Q3 Art Reflection

Posted by Ijustice Avery in Art - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 12:36 pm
I feel like I did a good job on my door and a little on my windows.  If I could do this assignment again I would use my time wisely and I would work harder on my cabinets.  I liked Johnny's drawing because his drawing looks neat and he has a very little amount of eraser marks.  I learned that things look better in person than in a picture.

It's Clearly About Me (Ijustice Avery)

Posted by Ijustice Avery in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - b2 on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 7:32 am
My slide is clearly all about me.  I designed my slide based on my favorite colors and my background is one of my favorite pair of sneakers.  These colors contrast but they are also compatible with one another.  They also match the sneakers in the background. But, I didn’t just choose these colors because I them, they are suppose to represent that I have a colorful personality.  I tried to make my slide as short as possible but also to have a lot of information about me as a person.   My slide isn’t just a slide, it has meaning.  The picture in the background represents something in my life.  The sneakers  resemble my sneaker game and they are basketball sneakers so they also represent how ball is life.  The 23 on the sneaker represents January 23rd which happens to be the day my uncle died.  He had a big impact on my life and I wanted to show love to him.  Finally, the mansion door in the back represents how tough times don’t last, and if you really try you can succeed.
