Thea Risher Capstone

Posted by Emma Risher in Capstone · Martin · Wed on Monday, May 18, 2020 at 2:40 pm

For my Capstone, I did volunteer work at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. I was a volunteer in the Child Life Department- Child Life specialists help families and children cope with the stress of hospitalization. As a volunteer in this department, I was tasked with supervising the playrooms in the hospital and doing bedside visits to patients who were in isolation, bringing them toys, and playing games with them. I went from 9:00-1:00 every Saturday. I spent the first few months of the school year retrieving all necessary documents, clearances, and health screenings for the position. I then had to attend three separate orientations, to get the best possible understanding of the responsibilities. Finally, during my first shift, I shadowed a veteran volunteer to get more comfortable with the layout of the hospital and see the close-up interaction with the children. Unfortunately, I was only able to complete 3 full shifts before the hospital closed to volunteers due to COVID-19. Even in the short amount of time I was there, I learned so much about what people can do to make young children feel safer and cared for in hospital settings. Many patients feel very alone or confused in the hospital; having toys, art projects, or games can change their entire experience. I loved this Capstone because I had the opportunity to connect with young children and explore elements of what I want to do in the future. Although my capstone timeline is finished, I plan on returning to St. Christopher’s Hospital when it is safe and continuing my volunteer work.

q4 Artist Statement

Posted by Emma Risher on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 12:25 pm

This quarter, we did many smaller one-week projects as opposed to projects that took more time. The first week, we had to draw figures. I found this intimidating because figures are very complex and I had never attempted to draw a figure in an interesting position such as the  ones that were presented for us to draw. I began to draw a ballerina with her hands extended in the air. I practiced for the big drawing by doing smaller figures using loose circles and shapes, which made me more confident in my art abilities. The final product was pencil on a large paper, and I think I executed it pretty well. For week 2, we did line drawings. I found the line drawings strangely relaxing. I used blue pen for this drawing and ended up making three of them because they took less time. Using pen for a drawing was scary at first, because mistakes are very evident. I liked the whale that I made the most.

In week 3, we made digital drawings. I never did this before, but playing with color schemes turned out to be very fun for me. I loved my use of similar shapes and primary colors. This one was particularly hard because my progress was not saved online, so I ended up having to redo everything after it got deleted. This helped me because now I know that the experience is stressful, and will be more careful to save my work next time. In week 4, we did a space drawing. After learning this last year, I found it pretty easy to execute this drawing. I drew a room with furniture, and I think that it went very well.

In week 5, we did a texture drawing. This was by far my favorite drawing of the year. I loved practicing with the different textures using pencils. The website we used to practice textures was a great guide, and I had a lot of fun while also learning about textures. We went on to draw fruit, which I also found extremely fun and I loved the final product. Week 6 was difficult because we did not have any classes, so I had to do the drawing on my own time. I did not put in as much effort as I would’ve hoped, and if I were to do this project over again I would invest more time into this week. Our last week was an element of art project, in which we had to incorporate all of the skills that we learned this quarter. This was also one of my favorite projects,  because I loved the creative license that I got and I loved the final product of my drawing. I drew a bird and used colored pencils and regular pencil. I loved the final product of this.

I think this year has helped me grow a lot as an artist, and I have learned things that I will take into my later life. Many skills I learned were completely new to me, and expanded my creative mind. This quarter, and advanced art as a whole, has been an amazing experience for me.

Q3 Artist Statement

Posted by Emma Risher on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 12:07 pm

This quarter I did a lot of new art pieces that I have never done before. We started the quarter off with a bicycle, where we had to attempt to draw a bike by looking at a previous sketch, then drawing from memory. This was very difficult for me, especially the proportions. I am used to drawing with nothing but pencil, so that part was easy. However, afterwards we could clean up the bike by using the same sketch for reference. This bike was on a much bigger paper than I am used to drawing on, so this was a good exercise on testing my abilities. After this, we had to create an optical illusion. This assignment was very fun, and for my illusion I chose a drawing that I used to make a lot as a child. For the medium, I used a combination of sharpie and colored pencils. I made a heart that appears to be jumping off of the 2-dimensional surface. I think it is very clever, but simple, and I really enjoyed the final product.

After we finished the optical illusions, we went on to practice shading. Although I do enjoy using graphite pencils a lot, I feel like this project forced me to use them to their full potential. Before this assignment, I did not shade well, and it always ended up looking choppy. For this project, we followed a guide that was a tutorial on how to shade. I found it a little tedious, but I think in the end it improved my skills. From this assignment, we moved onto drawing our eye, in pencil and in great detail. I loved this assignment, because I love drawing eyes, and the detail in eyes is very fascinating. I always doodle eyes on my notebooks and such. This assignment was relaxing and I loved how the end product turned out. The last assignment we had was to draw a mandala. For this assignment, I used brightly colored permanent markers. I think this assignment forced me to be more creative than the other assignments, because we had to completely conceptualize the mandala from scratch. I think the hardest part of this assignment was making it completely symmetrical, but in the end I enjoyed.

Overall, I think this quarter made me expand my artistic abilities a lot. I am really glad we did the assignments we did, because they pushed me out of my comfort zone to try new things. I am really excited for the challenges and projects to come in quarter 4!

Quarter 2 Artist Statement

Quarter 2 Artist Statement
Thea Risher

Over the course of this quarter, I made many different pieces and styles of art. These included blind contour drawings, a painting of our own choice, a recreation of a famous piece of art, an illustration from a piece of writing, and an edited photo. Because they were all very different, the process was extremely different for all of the pieces. I used many mediums I had not used before, such as watercolors or photo editing tools. In this artist statement, I will review everything I did, as well as how I grew as an artist.
It started with the blind contour drawings. For this art, you had to draw anything you could see without looking down at your paper or raising your pencil from the paper. At first this technique was difficult to me because I felt that they needed to be perfect. Once I got the hang of it, it became easy to just draw with my instinct and let it look funny. It showed me that art does have to be perfect or meet anyone’s standards, but could also be fun and stress-relieving. I drew mostly the people around me, myself, my hand, and my hair. I began to enjoy the freedom and simplicity of it. We had to make 10 of these, then we had to color the blind contour drawings as best we can. I used a combination of markers, highlighters, and colored pencils to do this. We could use our eyes for this, so the color ended up making them look more polished and pretty. I used different color schemes for the different drawings, and I really enjoyed the final product. Next piece was my favorite of the quarter, which was any painting of our choice. I chose to use watercolors, because I was curious about how they worked and had never used them before for the most part. I painted a path in a forest, with different colored leaves. I made the branches with a very dense brush and darker brown paint, then made the leaves with washy oranges and reds. I finished with sparkly watercolor paints. I learned that a little bit of water can go a long way. I really pleased with how it came out, considering it was my first time using watercolors. The next assignment was to recreate a piece of art by a famous artist. I chose to do one of the famous still lifes by Paul Cezanne, because I admire his work and technique. I originally wanted to use acrylic paint to recreate his painting, but could not capture the detail the way I wanted to. I ended up having to start over, and decided to just try sketching it. I liked the sketch much better, but I had to work on it at home because I wasted a lot of time trying to use the technique of acrylic painting. This piece was one of the most difficult for me because of changing mediums in the process, but the end product turned out very good in my opinion.
The next art piece was an illustration for a piece of writing. We were given a lot of freedom in this assignment, so I decided that I wanted to do an illustration for a song. The song I chose was Pink Matter by Frank Ocean. For this illustration, I wanted to do the silhouette of a woman surrounded by pink watercolors and full of galaxies in the middle of her body. I started by painting the background, then drew a woman’s profile on top of the pink layer. The profile was difficult to draw, so it took a few tries. Then, I colored her in with black acrylic paint. Once the paint dried, I drew white stars and galaxies and such. I thought this was a very fun art piece because I love music and was glad to incorporate my love of music into my art pieces. Lastly, we had to edit a photo. This was by far the most difficult assignment for me. It was the only one in which we had to edit a photo online, and I had a lot of trouble with this. Twice I completely edited my photo, only to have the photoshop app crash and lose all of my work. It would have been much easier to edit if the software was not faulty. Nevertheless, I think this was a learning experience because I had to learn to operate different photoshop tools, which will be useful for my future.

Artist Statement
Thea Risher
This quarter, I was very proud of the art that I made. To start, we painted ceiling tiles, then did fall wall hangings, and finally self portraits. Throughout the quarter I had a lot of inspiration and had to independently come up with my own ideas for most of the projects.
For the ceiling tile project, I found it very difficult to find an idea. I knew we had to paint with acrylics, which was a medium I did not use before. I went through a lot of rough sketches because I did not like my ideas. For inspiration, I thought about past art pieces I made and eventually came up with the idea of a hot air balloon. I looked up some photos and finally made a sketch that I liked. I use past art of mine as inspiration for a lot of my work. After this, we got a ceiling tile from the ceiling and I remade my sketch onto the smooth side of the tile after cleaning it off. Next, I painted the a light blue for my base color to represent the sky. Because the paint supply was getting very low, I ended up using water to make the paint last longer. This ended up being a very effective technique because it also made the texture of the paint very smooth in addition to using less paint. I thought that painting with acrylics would go very quickly, but I spent all of my work periods as well as one lunch period on the project and just barely finished in time. The paints required a lot of mixing and different layers and such. I enjoyed this art piece because I think I expanded a lot of knowledge about different art mediums and worked really hard, so I was proud of it. I learned about acrylic paints, which I look forward to using more in the future.
The next art piece that I made was a fall wall hanging. We had a lot of creative license for this project, so I easily decided to make a charcoal drawing because charcoal is one of my favorite mediums to work with. I wanted to make a tree because I was inspired by my neighborhood and all the falling leaves in autumn. Nature often inspires me as well. The tree that I drew started as a tracing of the basic outline. Then I began to texturize the bark and branches with pencil because I like sketching in pencil. Finally, I went over and shaded with charcoal and added more color as well as added leaves and more background setting for the tree. I think for this project I managed my class time very well and focused the entirety of the time. I liked this art piece a lot because I think I exercised old techniques that I don't use in my artwork as much as I would like to, and I think this expanded my different techniques.
The final project was a self portrait. I was a little nervous about this because a strong point of mine has never been peoples faces, especially my own. I find it very difficult to replicate peoples faces in general. Because of this, I used the technique of tracing. I found a picture of myself on my computer that I wanted use, then traced the screen using tracing paper. I downloaded a photo of my tracing to the computer, then projected it onto a larger paper where my final drawing was going to be. For my medium I decided to use pencil just because I think it is very easy to draw small details with pencil and a face has a lot of tiny details on it, such as wrinkles and eyelashes. Once I had the basic tracing outline of my face on the paper, I used my phone to look at my reflection and started filling in all of the details. This was harder than I anticipated, because a lot of the details are very hard to replicate on paper. I spent a lot of time shading in around the eyes, but I think the end product was very well done. What this project taught me about art is it requires a lot of patience and dedication, but the time you put in will pay off if you focus and invest yourself in it.
I learned a lot of new things about art this year. I learned more about mediums that I thought I was familiar with, such as pencil and charcoal. I learned more about shading and how to lightly use pencil as well as charcoal, and I used more blending techniques with both of these mediums. I had never used acrylic paint before, so I learned that watering them down makes the paint smoother and the colors mix very easily. I learned throughout that you need to always be working and use all of your time, because you never have to be finished with a work of art. I learned that focusing and trying new techniques pay off and you are always expanding your knowledge. For process, I would want everyone to know that I am still learning and improving but this is my art so far and I am happy to share it with you!

Mercury Print/Matt Project

Posted by Emma Risher on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 9:16 pm
My element was Mercury. Its atomic number is 80, and its chemical symbol is Hg. My element has been used for many things in the past, but it turned out to be poisonous and harmful to people. In the 20th century, it was commonly used for thermometers, fluorescent lights and light bulbs,  batteries, tooth fillings, felt production, and much more. It was discovered in Spain and France 30,000 years ago when it used for ancient cave murals and decoration. For my imagery, I originally made designs that incorporated a lot of Mercury's many well-known uses, but I felt like it was not very original. I did research and learned that Mercury is nicknamed "quicksilver" because it is a liquid metal and has a silver metallic look. I decided to use that for my design instead, because I thought it was more creative and less known about Mercury. To make the print, I made many different sketches because I felt that none of them were the design that I wanted. I finally decided on a design that looked like silver droplets around everything, and cleaned it up so the design looked nice. Then, I traced my design onto transfer paper and then onto a styrofoam plate. I went in with a blunted pencil on the styrofoam and pressed down the parts that I wanted to be white in the final product. Finally, I got the ink, covered my print with ink using a paint roller, and put the final product on paper. I matted two of them and left one untouched. If I did the print again, I probably would have made the prints further away from the edge because I struggled to rip the sides in a nice looking way. I also would have added a little more detail, because I thought the negative space wouldn't come out as well as it did in the end. The part I enjoyed the most was doing the printing itself, because I really enjoyed the different colors of ink and it made me feel like all the work that I did paid off.

Final Rubber Stamp

Posted by Emma Risher on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 3:21 pm

The writing process for this was very long and intricate. First, I brainstormed things that I believed described myself. These words were Outspoken, Short, Creative, Nature, Artistic, Supportive, Extroverted, Talkative, Pessimistic, and Makeup. I eventually tried to narrow these words down to three words which I thought described me the best. These words were nature, artistic, and creative. To sketch my design, I had to talk positive and negative space into account. I decided to use different symbols to represent each aspect of my personality, but make them outlines so the detailing does not get lost in the negative space. I ended picking up 5 symbols to represent my three words. I put my eyes to show me looking up at the things that I love. I put a book and a music note both to represent my creativity. I enjoy reading, writing, singing, and playing piano and I believed these two symbols represented my different forms of creativity. I put a paintbrush to show my artistic abilities and my appreciation of art as well. Finally, I put a flower to show my love of nature and being outside. I made all of them silhouettes so the positive space would be easy and cut out my stamp. I had to take out some of my detail when I realized it would be difficult to replicate when put into positive/negative space. Overall, the project was not difficult but required a lot of thought and time.

Negative Space Blog Post

Posted by Emma Risher on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 9:15 am

Negative Space A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space in art is the space that surrounds and fills in every part of an image that is not the focus point. For example, if there were a cat in the middle of a picture, the negative space would be the space around the cat, because the cat is the focus.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

The piece of art I used for my negative space cut out was a tree. To find the negative space, I had to first  find the outline of the main focus, which was the tree in this case. I cut around the tree to make the stencil. When I cut the tree out, I had two different stencils to use. I used this stencil for two different types of negative space.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?  D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

Negative space is very useful when it comes to drawings. It shows the basic outline of a drawing, which can guide an artist when sketching. Once they get the basic picture, they can fill in more details afterwards.

Relief Printing

April 17, 2017

Printmaking is a very important skill. It has been used for generations, and the art that can be made from prints has no limits. You can essentially make any design that you choose, and replicate it as many times as needed. This is a feature that no other art form has in the same way. Today, I researched relief printing, how it has revolutionized printmaking everywhere, and how it is still an impressive art form today.

Relief printing is a method of printing in which you print from raised images. In this process, a protruding design is created on a surface. It is then covered with ink, and firmly pressed upon a paper to create the desired image. It is a very unique type of printing. It contrasts directly with Intaglio printing, which is where the the image is carved into a surface, and is indented. Some elements of relief printing has inspired other kinds of printing, such as viscosity. It is different from all different types, including lithography, viscosity, and many other kinds of printing. It is distinguished by the fact that the image is on a raised surface, and that is not present in any other methods of printmaking.

The invention of Relief printing is still very controversial and there seem to be more than one origin. It was believed that relief printing was first found in Egypt in 500 BC. It was made by the Egyptians. Their original method was different than the relief printing that we see today. It was made by using a knife and wood, and using ink and pressing the print onto fabric. It was also found very early on in China. In China they carved stone and used it for chinese scholars to read scriptures. They were also used to make seals for letters. It can’t be determined where it originated first, but it is thought that these two different variations of relief printing were created separately but in the same time period. They could have had similar ideas and therefore two possible origin periods.

The history of relief printing has been going on for centuries. Relief printing slowly made its way through the middle east in 100-1300. It began to start in India. They started to use relief printing to mass produce books and famous paintings. In 1300, it was brought back to europe by crusaders and they adopted the method of printing as well. In Germany, a man named Gutemberg created the first printing machine. It spread and relief printing made art easier for everyone. Over time, the art of relief printing has been changed and adapted to different cultures and styles, but it has remained strong through it all. It is now a major part of the art industry.

Relief printing was revolutionary in art because there had never been anything like it before. It was the first printing that could allow mass production of any single work of art. It was also revolutionary because it had many different uses that went far beyond art just for pleasure. Finally, it was revolutionary because it remains a major art form today and never died out and is still making history.

In this unit I learned a lot of new information about slides and how to present them. I learned the importance of the visual attraction and appearance of a slide. I learned that in order to make an eye capturing slide, you need a lot more research than I expected. In my new slide, I took out the words on the bottom. I did this because the words distracted the viewer from the main idea of my slide. Also some critics of my slide said that the words on the bottom blended too much in and became hard to read. I also was told that the white font of my name did not go with the color scheme, so I switched all the remaining words to black. I then shifted over the words so they did not get congested with the black of the trees bordering the slide. My research was very important to the creation of this slide because without it I would not know how significant it was to make a pleasing color scheme and add contrast to make your slide more captivating. I also learned the power that open space has in a slide. I learned that big fonts make more of a statement and are more entrancing. Overall, without the help of a lot of research and the constructive criticism of my peers I was able to successfully make a slide that I am proud of.

Media Fluency

For my slide, I decided to leave a lot of open space. I think this leaves a good amount of room for interpretation about who I am. This was my intention because there are so many different aspects of my personality and there is no way to describe them all. I wanted my slide to have a light value, but still have contrast. I looked through the different color schemes on colour lovers, which was a sight recommended by Zach Holman who wrote the article about Slide Design for Developers. I wanted to use my favorite colors, so I put a sunset as my background. The sunset gives my whole slide a soft texture. This is also because I love nature. I took the photo myself too, and it shows that I like photography. I used white font for my name, because this created a nice balancing with the black trees bordering the photo. I centered my name so that it was the main focus of the slide. I added the words bold and musical because I believe those are words that describe me very well. At the bottom I made the font a peach color that matches the hues in the sky, creating harmony between the black bordering the sky. I put the words “With a love of art and beauty” at the bottom because I think that describes me in a good way. I love most aspects of art, anywhere from creative writing to singing and much more. As for beauty, I appreciate the beauty in nature but also in other people, and I also care a lot about my appearance.  Overall, I believe that I told a lot about myself in one slide while still making it visually appealing and not overly-congested.
