For my capstone, I’ve decided that I’d like to put together a book. The theme of it is you are not alone. The goal is to have people understand that we are all in this together and hard times are often times part of the human experience. This being said, I will be having the help of co-authors to write this process. The book is called, I Am Not Alone. In its spine, holds stories of hardships that my co-authors have went through and how they were able to overcome them hardship. The idea of them sharing their story will hopefully influence and encourage the people around them to seek the desired help struggling people might need.

Jenkins, Jerry B. “How to Write a Book: A Proven 20-Step Guide from a 21-Time Bestseller.” Jerry Jenkins | Proven Writing Tips, Jerry Jenkins, 19 Dec. 2018, jerryjenkins.com/how-to-write-a-book/.

While searching for sources and answers to where to start in making this dream come true. I came across this site and the first sentence said, “Becoming an author can change your life—not to mention give you the ability to impact thousands, even millions, of people.” That right there was all I needed to keep reading, for the main purpose of my book is to encourage others. I found Jerry Jenkins Blog to be reliable because he is a famous author that has approximately 21 New York Times bestseller novels.

This specific site helps me understand that it’s okay to take not see the full picture of the final product at first. The author even encourage not to see it that way, for a good book doesn’t have to be measured by time well spent or how many pages it turns. A good book can be as simple as having a completed beginning, middle and end. And personally that's the most encouraging thing to read because that takes unneeded stress that I’ve placed in myself, off my shoulders. Because in the end, we all have different views.

Bryan. “How Much Does It Cost To Self-Publish a Book?” Become a Writer Today, 15 Sept. 2018, becomeawritertoday.com/cost-of-self-publishing/.

This website really helped me narrow down on how much money I will need to spend. It really opened my eyes to see how little I know about how to publish a book properly. Based on the website it showed me that I need to do more research on how much my typical story will be. I really didn’t like that the writer didn’t really specify how much it would be, they didn’t really give me a small range at all. This was a very informative read, however now I am left with many questions.

Swets, Paul W. The Art of Talking so That People Will Listen: Getting through to Family, Friends, and Business Associates. Simon & Schuster, 1992.

While reading through some of the chapters, I was sad to find that this source wasn’t as resourceful as I’d hope. Although it showed me how to be a more vocal person and stand strong when trying to speak to people. It didn’t really share much about writing so people will listen. However, some of the things that the book mentioned could be implemented in my book. Some may beg to differ, but the way I interpreted the writing was useful to an extent.

“How to Use Real People in Your Writing Without Ending Up in Court.” Helen Sedwick, 24 Aug. 2016, helensedwick.com/how-to-use-real-people-in-your-writing/.

This website was written by an attorney. Which I consider to be very reliable because out of all people, they’ll know the most about the ins and outs of writing a book that are similar to mine without getting sued. This site was very useful for me because it gave me hope that it is still possible to have my book officially published allowing people around the world that they aren’t alone in their tough situations and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The site was a little confusing at first hand because the writer was trying to explain that no matter how you word specific things it's best that you don’t say it at all or that you change not only the characters names but also their characteristics and tweak some of their history.

Henneke. “5 Ways to Make Your Words More Powerful (and Get People to Listen).” Enchanting Marketing, 4 Aug. 2017, www.enchantingmarketing.com/how-to-make-words-more-powerful/

As a writer and person I always found it hard to share something with someone without them getting distracted or spacing out. I found this website very encouraging because it listed the things that I’m doing wrong. For example, the writer says that it is very unpleasant and unrealistic to read a really long sentence (run-on sentence) they encouraged to break it down. Instead of having a 43 word long single sentence break it down. That right there will be easier to read. Also the website helped me to understand how to word things properly. It gives a quote by Albert Einstein “If you can’t explain it to a 6 year old, you don’t understand it yourself.

Treasure, Julian. Ted, Ted, www.ted.com/talks/julian_treasure_how_to_speak_so_that_people_want_to_listen.

Like the book I read, this Ted talk was more about speaking to others in the present rather than writing. However the one thing that I felt was very intriguing about the Ted Talk was H.A.I.L At first I was very hesitant to follow through with the video but as I watched and listened I realized that HAIL should be applied to my stories so people find it more believable and relatable. H-honesty be clear and straightforward. Implying don’t go on a rant about one specific moment for 3 pages. A-authenticity be yourself. I-integrity be your word. L-love wish them well. Although Julian Treasure was directing it more to conversations between people, it can also be implied for stories.

“How to Publish a Book: An Overview of Traditional & Self-Publishing.” How To Publish a Book: An Overview of Traditional & Self-Publishing | WritersDigestShop, Writers Digests, www.writersdigestshop.com/how_to_get_published.

This website opened my eyes to what the process of publishing will really look like. It taught me the difference between self publishing and having an agent. Though there is a major difference between the two, I never really thought that I could make money off of my project for that was not the point for it. However I was really hoping to be able to publish in some sort of way. From the article, my best option would have to be self publishing. Although that may cost some money, I am willing to either use my own cash or have fundraisers to help fund what I believe to be a good cause.

Bittner, Lauren "Best Ways People Tend to Relate." Personal interview. Jan. 2019.

I believe that Lauren is a great source that is available to me because she has a masters degree in psychology and has recently started her own practice. Although she wasn’t allowed to share much about her patients specifically. Lauren was able to share with me things that worked and didn’t work with talking to some clients. She shared with me that people are coming to her in a vulnerable state. Hearing her say this reminds me that I also have to keep that in my mind while reading my co-authors stories. Not also them but those who might be reading my book as well because they will be coming to my book most likely looking for answers and support.

“Learning to Relate.” Psychology Today, Sussex Publishers, www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/irrelationship/201605/learning-relate.

Psychology today wasn’t as hopeful and informative that I hoped it would be. Although it did talk a lot about relating to people. It talked mostly on the foundations of relating and how it originated from when we were children. The site was talking about how we developed the skill of learning at young age due to our parents. Although it is a very interesting idea to learn about, it doesn’t actually help me with my developing project. I was expecting a lot from this sight however was slightly disappointed.

“Create, Publish and Sell Your Book for Free.” Journal of Camus Studies 2013 by Camus Society (Paperback) - Lulu, www.lulu.com/.

This website is a publishing sight. Although I might not necessarily use this site specifically. I found it interesting to look and scroll through for it informed me more about what I will be getting myself throughout the process of creating this book.

The Road

Posted by Emily Pugliese in College English · Giknis · B Band on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 3:40 pm

Fire and Ice

Our board game consists of moral choices that not only affect one group but all groups involved in the game. The objective of, Fire and Ice, is to make it to the coast at the same time as the other team. We felt that since the coast was the man and the boy’s only goal in The Road that it would be fitting to make it the end of the game. There are two paths that lead to the coast. The longer (less difficult) road represents the road that the man and the boy took, and the shorter (more treacherous) path represents the forest that’s beside the road. Within the game two groups work together in order to reach the end at the same time. Throughout the book, the boy and the man are on their own and don’t really work with other people in order to survive but the boy constantly thinks about other people and how they are being affected by the world they live in. The boy has compassion for others and always wants to help even when they have barely anything to offer such as when they ran into Ely or when they returned the one handed man’s clothes after they took them away. Along with the man and the boy thinking about how their choices would influence one another throughout the book such as whether to “take a look” in a house or to camp out a night. Without them thinking about each other they would have ended up pushing each other away making it harder to survive. We wanted to add the compassion and teamwork element to the board game by adding two teams that must work together to reach a common goal but subsequently end up being the same group since they reach the coast at the same time. It makes the moral choices from the demon cards harder to make since it will be influencing both groups.

Each group gets camp cards and supply cards. Camp cards allow them to lose a turn in order to help teams reach the end at the same time. Supply cards are enough food, water, ammunition, etc for one person to survive the game, without a supply card the person evidently dies. In the book supplies is the most important thing for their survival which is why we added the supply card aspect to the game. It makes the moral decisions that they will encounter harder if it involves losing a card, possibly killing a member or taking on another person which means you would need a supply card in order to take care of them. Throughout the game each turn a group will roll a dice in order to decide which card they will have to work with, demon cards or angel cards. Demon cards deal with hard moral choices that people would run into while living in an apocalyptic era. These choices range from bad weather taking away a supply card to finding a child and having to make the decision to either take the child or not with the possibility of going back two spaces if you don’t, and losing a supply card if you do. Along with choices that can affect the other team such as pawning off a child onto them or taking a supply card from them. The team with these decisions would have to think about how their decisions would influence the other team and themselves bringing up the compassion element from the book along with the fact that within this kind of apocalyptic environment moral decisions are very important to survival. The boy and the man run into these decisions very often throughout the book where these choices that they make can influence the rest of their journey. Angel cards deal with the random strokes of luck that the man and the boy have run into such as finding a bunker or finding a tarp. Things that help with survival and make life just a little easier. Angel cards are hard to roll since you must roll a seven in order to earn them. You have the chance to earn supply cards easily or to move forward faster through out the game. There is also an opportunity to get both cards at the same time by rolling doubles. The man and the boy run into strokes of luck by getting supplies or finding a safe space but at the same time they have a hard moral choices to make such as staying the bunker. The man and the boy found a bunker which gave them enough supplies to survive for months but they had to decide how long to stay or wether to stay at all. In this kind of environment luck and choices go hand and hand so we wanted to make sure we included that aspect into our game.

Getting Started

Based on age. The oldest have to make the choice for the youngest. Do they want them to take the harder path with less choices compared to the easier path with more choices.

Start off with a 100% then throughout the game things are taken off of it.

Objective: Both teams reach the coast at the same time.

The Fallout of Beliefs

Posted by Emily Pugliese in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 9:40 am

Why do people believe? Why do they have faith if they are going to lose track and sight of what they once had? The answer is simple and is located in Ecclesiastes 1:9, “What has been will be again, what has been doing will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” This verse is saying that whatever happens to something that was good, than it’ll come again.  It is often believed that high school students are more known for losing their faith, compared to college. This is an inappropriate accusation because it provides false information. Statistics and studies have shown that it is more common for students who leave for college to also leave track of their religious beliefs.

Statistics from Christianity Today (CT), proves that 34% of teens and highschool students drop their faith. It is believed that the rate is so low because they are surrounded by encouraging people who also believe the same things they do. However, the college rate for dropping their belief systems is greater, averaging at about 70%. This rate is much higher because this is the time in a young adult’s life where they start to venture out of their parents wings and start living independently.

High school, internships, jobs and parents don’t prepare kids enough for the journey that they are about to take. School prepares you for the workload that you are about to experience like, exams and benchmarks. Internships and jobs prepare you for responsibility and parents prepare you with the understanding and concept of living independently. Sadly though, these four things fail to teach young adults the importance of not losing yourself and who you are to others especially God or Gods.

The Center for Parent/Youth Understanding (CPYU) is an organization who notes that 65% of students who graduate from high school and enroll for college drop out or leave their church. It is believed that students walk away because they are launched into the world facing new situations and temptations that they have never come face-to-face before.

Though it is predicted that the only reason that students tend to lose their faith is because of the new atmosphere they have moved to. Yes, this is an important aspect of the situation, it is not the only and main reason. A very knowledgeable point was made in One News Now, there they stated that students and young adults don’t make it a priority, implying that they don’t make it important or a priority to keep their faith.

If a student were asked, “Why did you lose your faith. What happened and what caused it?”  More often than not they would answer that it wasn’t intentional, but also it is important to point out that it was intensical to not lose their faith in the first place. A lot if  not all of college students get overwhelmed and tend to forget about certain things, like religious backgrounds and old friends.

Losing faith is common in all age groups, parents, kids, grandparents and adolescents. But, research show that it is more common for college aged students (ages 18-24) to drop or walk away from their faith. It can be a sour sight to see for that was part of who someone was, thankfully though, colleges have been noticing the drop of religious backgrounds. College took initiative to fix the problem and created support groups for different religions so they can feel more at home and not have to change who they once were.

Although some students who didn’t lose their faith in college might think that the topic of losing faith is irrelevant and unnecessary. It is important to remember that the  influence goes beyond them and can affect other students.

I believe that this is my best possible 2fer because this is something I worry about going off to college. I believe I was able to help people who might feel the same way. Although I didn't list on how to not lose faith I did however include things that people can do to avoid that from happening. I did include a lot of factual information with statistics backing it up, and that is very important because I always seem to not use as much statistics as I should. So I am very proud of this 2fer.

War Between Shrews

Posted by Emily Pugliese in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at 10:40 am

This Means War vs. The Taming of the Shrew

First, in Taming of the Shrew an important character to notice is Bianca. She is the youngest daughter of Baptista, whom is a young beautiful woman that many men are trying wed. Though Bianca might seem ready for a master, her father refuses unless her older sister Katherine has found a man. Katherine is a strong, opinionated woman who isn’t afraid to speak her thoughts because of these traits, it caused many people to not seek beauty in her but veil and disgust.  Another important character is Lucentio, he is the suited man for Bianca, he was able to woe her instantly. Lucentio is a young charming man full of caring characteristic. While on the other hand, Petruchio is a cruel greedy man who only seeked Katherine for her wealth.

In the movie one of the central characters is Tuck he is a small,  kind man with a funny sense of humor. Though many may not see him to be the type who works for the CIA he is good at what he does. Tuck hides behind the idea that he is a travel agent but this identity caused many problems with a previous relationship leaving him with an ex-wife. Though Tuck might have lost someone he loved, he still had his best friend FDR. FDR is Tuck’s partner in crime who also has to hide behind the title of being a cruise ship captain. Through the movie you will begin to notice that he is a womanizer and somewhat snobby. Though many people might find these traits unattractive Lauren Scott, found his games foolish, at first. Lauren is a product testing executive who has recently suffered through a failed engagement and to cope she dates 2 different guys who happen to be FDR and Tuck.

In comparing the story lines, viewers and readers will notice though the two have to different plots and ideas they both surf around the same theme and topic; relationships. Relationships won’t last long unless their is true honesty with each other. Being honest is what a relationship is all about, some would argue that it’s about control, but in the end it's about trust and honesty.

That’s how our characters were able to win their girls.

The scene is set with Tranio and Lucentio, hiding in the bushes, over hearing a group of people disgust the fates of Katherine and Bianca.

“Tranio: You will be a school master and undertake the teaching of the maid: that's your device.”

(Act 1, Scene 1, 196-198)

The context of the quote was given to Lucentio from his servant Tranio when he saw that he had been wooed by the presents of Bianca. In honoring his master and wanting to help him, Tranio gives Lucentio the idea that he should become someone else. Someone that would be able to get close with the youngirl, like a school master. In doing so Lucentio would hopefully be able to woo Bianca, just she owed him.

Though Tuck doesn’t dress up as another person to woo the girl he has madly fallen for. He does however still hide behind the identity of false management in the workforce as well.

Screenshot 2018-04-11 at 4.29.44 PM
Screenshot 2018-04-11 at 4.29.44 PM

At this point in the film viewers know that for a living Tuck works for the CIA. But, as the movie continues forward he ends up facing his ex-wife after visiting his son at karate. In the scene, you are given a small piece of important information that he is known as a travel agent. In the film viewers are able to tell that his previous family is very sour about the idea of him being a “travel agent”.

The context of and the reasoning of hiding their identity might be different in the film and play but either way each character both play apart in being dishonest about who they are to someone they care about. The two characters, Tuck and Lucentio both lied about their profession to a  women they love. Which in the end, Tuck ends up with his ex-wife again later finding out his true identity and same thing with Lucentio. Eventually in the play, he reveals his true self to Bianca and still was able to win her over.

Later on the script Lucentio runs into a problem.

Hortensio: Sir, you say well, and well you do conceive. And since you do profess to be a suitor, you must, as we do gratify this gentleman, to whom we all rest generally beholding.

(Act 1, Scene 2, 277-280)

Here is the scene when all three suitors for Bianca meet up and create the plan to marry off Katherine, the older sister. The men convince Petruchio to marry the women and he claims that he will do it because of the wealth and the money that is being offered with the commitment of the marriage.

In comparing the circumstances at hand the audience can see that the men combined from both Taming of the Shrew and This Means War that they all have different motives in the beginning and while at first they didn’t stop to think how it might affect the relationships with the female character in the film and play.

Screenshot 2018-04-11 at 5.26.04 PM
Screenshot 2018-04-11 at 5.26.04 PM
Screenshot 2018-04-11 at 5.33.22 PM
Screenshot 2018-04-11 at 5.33.22 PM

In the scene, best friends Tuck and FDR, reveal to each other that the person they are dating/seeing happen to be the same person. Through a quick transaction of words it is understood that the men will continue to date the women under three conditions, she doesn’t know that they are friends, they stay out of each other way and “no hanky-panky”.

In comparing the book to the film though there isn’t necessarily an agreement placed upon the three suitors when it came to Bianca. Though the men did agree on the idea that let the best and most fit person for her win there wasn’t any rules held against them. In the film the men did happen to agree upon those three things but throughout the film you will notice that they didn’t acknowledge them and tried any way possible to win Lauren over, even if it meant lying to her.

Hortensio (as Litio) : Madam, my instruments in tune.

Bianca: Let’s hear. Oh fie, the treble jars!

Lucentio (as Cambio) :Spit in the hole, man, and tune again.

(Act 3, Scene 1, 39-43)

In the scene, the reader can identify that the game of trying to win Bianca has begun. Laid out for the reader is the idea that Hortensio and Lucentio is disguised as other characters as if they were both school masters. Lucentio is trying to convey how he feels towards Bianca and how much her presence pleases him but Hortensio is getting in the way bring the musical instrument that he doesn't know how to play or tune properly, interfering with Lucentio’s shot at trying to win the lady.

Though neither of the characters is scene playing a gamut in the movie. A scene is portrayed of FDR showing Lauren another type of art; paintings.

Screenshot 2018-04-12 at 9.53.19 AM
Screenshot 2018-04-12 at 9.53.19 AM
Screenshot 2018-04-12 at 9.53.33 AM
Screenshot 2018-04-12 at 9.53.33 AM

In the scene FDR took Lauren out for a date to see an exclusive exhibit on Gustav Klimts. To impress the girl, FDR had an earpiece with someone from his agency relaying information to him about each painting. Eventually though, the connection was interrupted by Tuck and he starred relaying false information to FDR to screw up his date and get between Lauren and him.

Reading the end and seeing the credits roll up the screen the audience can come to the assumption that relationships are important to society. It is often portrayed that in relationships it is often about control over whom, and Taming of the Shrew was a great example for that. But, in the movie This Means War, it shows that instead of control, relationships are more about honesty. For a healthy relationship won’t work unless you are true with yourself and the person your trying to be with.

Who?

Posted by Emily Pugliese in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 10:46 am

https://www.wevideo.com/view/1050018687

I was sitting in the office of a new school, but with a new guardian. She looked like my mom...she sounded like her, but her breast weren’t as big and she talked a lot more than my mom. Who was she? Why was she enrolling me into a new school? The new arrangements were only temporary…weren’t they? She should know that.

It started the night he came home, the one that left us for her best friend. The one that beat us....introduced terrible habits to her; my step dad was finally home but for how long? My brother and I were in the kitchen eating old, mushy ramen noodles for dinner because they forgot to feed us again. We were listening to the snoring baby in the other room, and bickering parents in the next. The noise got louder and louder. We never did finish our dinner that night.

That nightmare was a recurring dream I would have for nights on end. I’d wake up from it screaming and crying, soaked in sweat with my cousin holding me.

She would tell me, “It’s only a dream.” But if only she knew that it actually happened.

That night I saw something that no first grader should have ever seen: police barging into the house called by a crazy ex-girlfriend and ex-best friend. She told them that my step-dad robbed her. however, the only thing he stole was her heart, which he ended up stomping on in the end.

The police wore shiney badges and really bulky black vests. They all marched to the door that my parents were locked behind. I wanted to tell them it was locked but I was rushed into my room with my brother and was told to lock the door and not let anyone in-especially my step-dad. They made me promise to not let my step-dad in.

The last thing I saw was a man extending a gun towards the locked doors. He kick down the locked door to the room which my parents were in, then BAM, went my door, as it was slammed in my face.

Six years have past...six years of phone calls, letters, and supervised visits. I could see the light in her face again, and I believe it was because she was no longer with my step-dad. People says it’s because she went to rehab, but deep down we all knew that the reality of it was that she left Him behind in that old house in Atlantic City. Everyone believed that it was finally happening, it took the women six years to clean herself up for her kids.

But then what they say is true: once an addict, always an addicted.

She ended up with John again, I felt bad for her. My mother was a kind women, but one thing she wasn’t ever taught was how to love. She was young, she didn’t understand that you shouldn’t have to do things in order for someone to love you; that you shouldn’t have to change who you are.

My mom had a rough childhood, she lost her mom at a young age and her living situations after that weren’t perfect either. She was labeled damaged and stupid because she couldn’t learn like the other kids. What she went through made her feel different, and it caused her to rebel against her family. Who wouldn’t want to leave that situation; that life style?

Those things that people told her, built up in her head and she started to believe them, causing her to eventually believe that the love that she gets is what she deserved. Even if it means being physically and mentally abused.

The light dimmed from her face. Months would go by without an exchange of words. One day she called, I couldn’t sit still, I was running around to person to person saying, “See! I told you she’d call!”

When I finally picked up the phone she said, “I don’t think I’m suppose to be talking or contacting you.”

“But Mom,” I said, “Wh….” She hung up on me before I could finish, I was left crying for days. I was stuck in a bubble that no one could bust in or out of.

Months dragged by until we got another call, but I wasn’t the receiver of it my aunt was. My aunt was at work when she got it.  I tend to imagine that everything slowed down for her when she answered that phone. I believed that she stopped cleaning someone's ass, because she was a nurse's assistant at the time, and ran out the door.

While she was there frantically running around her work trying to put pieces together, I was out shopping with my brother and Uncle for a new Easter dress and as we got to the car, another call went through.

Ring.. Ring, his phone went, and it was my aunt. As soon as he answered the phone there was a sudden change in the atmosphere my brother and I could feel it.

My uncle turned to us and said, “Get in the car.” We obeyed.

In the car we watched my uncle pass back in forth at the front of the car. From time to time he would stop, say something, and rub his prickly beard, in what it seemed like, frustration. Time ticked by of the same pattern; walk, walk, turn, look at my brother and I, say something, rub his chin, walk, walk again. It was a continued cycle.

Eventually the silence in the car was broken without looking away from our uncle, my brother asked, “What do you think happened?”

I turned to look at him and said, “Either she got fired from her job or someone died.” Josh, my brother, looked at me. He didn’t say anything else but nodded and we both turned to look at our uncle again. By this time he had already put his phone back into his pocket and had walked to the side of the car. He opened the door, and got in. The ride home was uncomfortably silent, besides the engine that was roaring and the traffic around us. Before we pulled out of the parking lot, some words were said and questions were asked. All that was needed to know was that Josh and I would find out what happened when we got home.

At home, no one was home. The house felt so much smaller because of all the tension and anticipation. I didn’t favor the atmosphere so I hid in my room.

Down stairs the dog began to bark, the next thing I know I’m down stairs on the couch, with my head faced down in the cushion. I was crying, my aunt was crying, my brother was crying and my uncle was just there holding us.

Looking back, I realized I didn’t know why or who I was crying for. When my aunt came home that night she had called my brother and I downstairs to talk, which was a bad sign at the start. The first words were “I’m sorry.”

That night I found out my mom had overdosed on heroin. At the time I was 13, I was hitting about 4 years of living with my aunt. It was half as long as living with my mom. Looking back I realize it was a sad experience, but not because I lost my mom but rather because I didn’t know the severity of the situation.  I reacted the way people expected me to, with tears in my eyes longing to be left alone; It seemed appropriate.

At the funeral people cried and moaned and, yes, I was sad. Though, not to the point where I felt depressed; she was a shadow in my life. My mom was a blank screen. You couldn’t read her, she barely showed emotion. How was I supposed to mourn someone like that? She was and still remains my mother, nonetheless and she will always have that place in my heart.

If I am being completely honest, because I didn’t have complete contact or a viewing for her funeral, I still believe from time to time that she is still out there somewhere.

The Painful Escape

Posted by Emily Pugliese in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 1:28 pm
“Addiction begins with pain and ends with pain”, states motivational writer, Eckhart Tolle.  Despite this knowledge, substances both legal and illegal continue to be misused by humans. While addiction is a chemical reaction to drugs, there is also a psychological addiction. A lot of the users who are introduced to the drugs are looking for a distraction from the pain that reality has brought upon them. This means that addiction is more of a psychological reaction than a chemical one. People use anything that they can get their hands on to distract their minds from reality.

It was tested by psychologist, Alan Fogel, that drugs are used to distract pain. Studies show that physical pain and emotional pain activate similar regions of the brain which is the anterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex.

When people are injured they are often prescribed drugs by their doctor  to heal the pain and to allow the patient to feel better through the healing process. Since the regions of the brain that react to psychological trauma are the same, people that are emotionally hurt look towards substance. A good handful of the substance that people use are actually painkillers. A case study from WebMD shows that painkillers are more common and known because they’re prescribed to patients by doctors. The patients found that the medication helped and made everything numb allowing them to feel pleasure. After a period of time of taking the substance, it was found that the user believed that it was needed.

Over time, the drug rate has increased and now the nation has over 20 million users that suffer with abuse. The United States holds the highest ranking in drug abuse.  The people are struggling with finding themselves and the best choice they believe they have is to turn towards more pain which are painkillers. Painkillers will distract the human mind from realities pain for a couple hours, but in the long run they are putting themselves in even more pain then the user originally started with.

However, users are able to ignore that fact,"It took care of the pain, but I found myself taking [the painkillers] even when I didn't have the migraine, because I just enjoyed that euphoric numbness," Jason says, a recovering addict for eleven years.

Society today struggles with a lot of abuse and pain and throughout generations people have found different ways to cope with the struggles. But the main coping distraction that people use, ranging from 12 and older is addiction. When asked, users  might say that they aren’t addicted just needed a distraction. But on closer inspection, they are addicted to the substance they are using because they believe it’ll solve all their problems.

La Historia de Chango Patakí por Imani Emilia Waverly y Brendon

Posted by Emily Pugliese in Spanish 2 · Manuel · B Band on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 12:42 pm

¡Me encanta Manayunk!

Posted by Emily Pugliese in Spanish 1 - Manuel - E on Monday, March 28, 2016 at 6:33 pm

Soy de la ciudad del amor fraternal
No sé amor pero sé dolor

porque

Recuerdos desde mi infancia

Que a veces parten el alma

Yo oigo mi mamá y papá

“Todo es bueno”

Yo veo la historia por la encrucijada.
Yo toco mi camino debajo de mí
Yo saboreo el ácido mi historia,

Pero huelo al principio del futuro.

Mi corazón descalzo escondo de la ciudad,
Yo corro a mi familia
Pero mi familia pelea
No sé adónde correr.

Nuestra casa es ilimitada,

Todos somos familias.

No importa nuestra historia

Somos completos.

Me gusta también escuchar música y bailar
No me gusta escribir y cantar
Aun que soy divertida soy también perezosa
Me gusta pasar tiempo con amigos
                 Odio ir de compras
