Estefan Carrillo (Capstone)
The inspiration to my capstone was The place where I surf in Mexico. The community depended off the ocean in so many ways and the well being and economy of the city is based off the ocean. I created a paper talking about the importance to not pollute and how pollution affects us all. The way my project helped the SLA community was that it educated them on a topic that is always talked about but its never really talked about in depth.

This quarter I had a lot of fun because I was able to sit down and relax but also make quality work.
Q2 art- Estefan Carrillo
In the second quarter we worked on the Fibonacci sequence and negative space. I thought that it was really cool that the Fibonacci sequence is our everyday lives and most of the time we don't even notice it. For my collage I cut out parts of the body and sport items because our joints twist and turn in so many ways that our body can look like the sequence. I created a diamond with 2 fern leafs next to it for my block print because I thought it was a nice contrast and some people don't know that diamonds are excavated and cut to look like they do in jewelry stores.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian: By Estefan Carrillo
I know I'm reading a good book when the first couple of pages grab my attention. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part- Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is one of those books. Once I picked the book up it was almost impossible to stop reading as it was simultaneously sad while cheering me up with such funny stories. I saw on the cover of the book all the amazing awards it won from when the book was first published in the USA back in 2007 but I was not prepared at all for what a fun time I would have reading. Usually I’'m not much of a reader.
Sherman Alexie was born to a Spokane Indian mother and a Coeur d’Alene Indian father. Right after his mom gave birth to him they diagnosed Sherman with hydrocephalus (water-on-the- brain) and 6 months later underwent a brain operation from which he was not expected to survive. Despite his early disabilities in life he was at the top of his class and an advanced reader. One of his early educational institutions was a school on the reservation but he then sought a better education during high school at Rearden( a majority white school) where he was a top student and outstanding basketball player. He then moved on to Gonzaga University on a scholarship from where he transferred to Washington State University after two years to study pre-med.
Fainting spells in anatomy class convinced Alexie to change his major, a decision reinforced by a love of poetry and writing. He graduated with a bachelors degree in American Studies and shortly after received the Washington State Arts Commission Poetry Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Fellowship.
The book is written in the first person, semi - autobiographical account of a boy named Arnold's life as a Spokane Indian living on the reservation with his family. Arnold's life story starts right from the second you open the book. You expect a kid that is born with an oversized head, oversized hands and feet, bad eyesight seizures and and a lisp among other things to have a terrible life. He is constantly beaten and called names like retard, etc. Having terrible misfortune continued for him as he is dirt poor and his father is an alcoholic like most Indians on the reservation. Reservation culture didn’t hold high standards and expectations for any of its residents including Arnold Arnold's life and well being was constantly threatened by bullies some of whom were even adults.
His life was not all sadness however, it had some bright aspects to it also. He had a friend on the reservation named Rowdy, a tough kid who had always been the person that was his bodyguard and knew him since they were both babies. Junior and Rowdy used to love to go to each others houses and read comics books over and over again. No matter how many times they read the comic books they would always laugh at the corny jokes. But the brightest things in Junior’s life were his drawings and basketball. Regardless of life’s challenges, he was able to take out his frustrations & express all his feelings on paper or on the basketball court.
No matter what you went through in life or what your social status is you will connect with this book. We will all go to high school or have gone to high school and had dreams for ourselves that we may or may not have fulfilled due to influences and personal decisions much like what Junior had to experience and go through to complete what he did at the end of the book. We've all been the new kid at school or I know we've all had that weird feeling of wanting to be accepted by everyone on the first day of school.

I chose to create a basketball for the creative part because I thought that when Junior blocked Rowdys shot in the final game of the season, it showed in my opinion that he had grown through out the book and he now had more self confidence and was not afraid to stand up for himself anymore.

How does society affect the world?
While attending Mr Blocks History and English class it opened my eyes to many issues in the world such as “How does society affect the world?” we did many assignments that challenged me and made me look at different topics in other ways that i would have ever thought of without the help of Mr Block. If you think about it for a little you will immediately start thinking about human actions but i'm also talking about how media and people we see as famous and athletic affect us.

Many americans nowadays go crazy when missed calls are made during a game when its not even that big of a deal and i've heard of stories of people not eating or losing thousands of dollars due to their team losing. Americans become too addictive it's like gambling people just keep going back and spending money on useless stuff.

Society influenced clothing in huge way, before you would walk into a shop and order a pair of shoes personalized to you. Now a days you walk into a store and you find hundreds of the same shoe at a cheaper price than a pair of personalized ones to worse quality fabrics and they are not made the want you want them they can sometimes take short cuts due to demand.

Society sees illegal aliens as the enemy and when the economy had a downfall one of the first ones to be blamed for not there being enough jobs where the illegal aliens but if the americans would think straight and not just assume stuff they would see that the jobs illegal aliens do are the worse and toughest jobs that also pay the lowest wage. So if an american were to work the job an illegal alien does they would have to complain and call the police because they would see how unjust the jobs are.
Click here“When she met Teacake in the story she was a woman that was not that strong and she had some power because she owned land and had a store but her ex husband prohibited her from doing many things such as she was not able to play checkers but when teacake came into her life he swept her off her feet and made her feel equal. He let her play checkers and they went on a romantic picnic like she did when she was with her first boyfriend. Teacake filled in what was missing in her life and when she killed him because she had to, she cherished those moments and it seemed like she did not regret being with him (Final thoughts on their eyes were watching god)”
While reading “Their Eyes Were Watching God” I noticed the inequality, society influenced in how women are not seen is that women are not equal. A huge example of how women are not seen as equal is like when a female Basketball player from Oregon named Brittney Griner wanted to play in the NBA but a lot of people said no because she would get pushed around and would only get hurt. She was not even given a chance all she was told was that she was a female so that made her “ineligible to play”. Another example of how women are seen as less than men and only as like a sex object is the lingerie football league, they are dressed in lingerie and usually the spectators are men and all they do is harass them.

Has industrialization led to more harm than good, more good than harm or a lot of each?
I believe that it has brought more than good because it made a lot of of small businesses go out of business and the factories would pollute the rivers so the environment was affected and also the product quality went down for example before a shoe makes would make only like one pair of shoes a day specifically made for one person but now factories made hundreds a day due to a higher population and demand.

In my opinion sports are such a big deal in this country because the american people don't have anything else to do and it is a way to control the american population, for example they make the american society think that if they don't have a muscular body that they are not appealing to females. I also believe that it is a way to not let the american people voice out there opinion on more important issues. If you combine all the money each sport fan spends on sport it would be around 8 billion dollars.

Language autobiography
Accents are everywhere and everyone has one even if you are born in the country you live in. If you hear an accent that sounds weird to you they probably think the same thing about your accent. My essay is about how my mom was judged on her accent and how people judge people on the way they speak and see them as less.
The connection with what happened was that sometimes people judge people based on the language they speak, And that people sometimes think they have the right to say whatever they want because the feel superior. Just because you speak the language we were going to it does not mean you can treat us as lower and tell us what we can and can't do.

Having a mother that is from Mexico and is English is not here first language it can sometimes be tough to understand her. People sometimes treat her as less because she has an accent but when she speaks english it is pretty understandable the only problem is her accent. Sometimes people immediately think that she is an illegal alien and speak to her as if she had never spoken or heard english before when some of them know that she has been here for more than 22 years.
People that are not native speakers from the country are mistreated and seen as less just because they have an accent or don't seem to speak the language the “right way”. Whenever the people that supposedly say they are the native people from here are actually not .They came here as immigrants too and don't have the right to judge someone just because they don't speak english correctly. If they were to go to another country where they don't speak english they would run into being judged too, for not speaking the language correctly or having an accent when you speak it.
Like the other day I was with my mom at a store and she was paying a cashier and the cashier started talking to my mom as if she was a baby because my mom had an accent and it was obvious that she was not born here the USA. My mom reacted because the lady was over reacting by saying that she could not understand her and was acting in a rude way towards her.
After the incident at the store my mom said to me “Esa senora era muy ruda” I answered back “I know she was mama, she was just trying to make you make but you did the right thing by talking to her manager” she said “sometimes people here can be so rude and not know how to treat people the right way, this would never happen en mexico” I said “I know it wouldn't, she did it cause she is not happy and her life is miserable just let it go” she said “i'll let it go but if it happens again I will not accept it”
Another instance was when my mother and I were returning from a trip to mexico we were on the plane and we we were speaking spanish, I guess a guy was in a bad mood so he said to us “ We are going to america so speak english”, My mom and I both thought that he had absolutely no right to say that and we could speak any language we want, There is not a law that says we can't speak our native tongue. Everyone has the right to speak whatever they want and how ever they want, No one can take that away from you.

and as the head of the tar sands blockade I am not going to let you go through with this.
Did you know that the emissions from the tar sands is twelve percent higher than regular crude oil? Do you know what that means Dad????
That is going to destroy the world!
Please Dad listen to me just this one time.
You can make money off of something else
but don't put the world
and my future in risk.
What are you serious you don't care about my future only about money.
I can't believe my mom married you, you're such a douchebag.

I can't let that happen I’m going to have to do anything in my power to make sure my
sweet planet earth is safe from those blood sucking demons that only care about money and not about the people.
For history class we had to create 3 monologues in different perspectives about the keystone pipeline that is going to travel from the tar sand in canada to refineries in texas. The monologues I wrote are from the perspective the owner of transcanada who is trying to persuade the american government to pass the pipeline but in my other monologue his son is trying to convince him that its not a good idea. My final monologues was from the perspective of Al Gore.

Descriptive essay
Through life i've had to try new things and confronting things on my own. I've always had to deal with big issues on my own.
It all started when I was really young my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer one of the toughest times in my life it all started when my dad walked into my room on a bright sunny morning, I was just getting ready for school when all of a sudden he comes in his face had a glum lookI knew from the start that something was wrong and it was serious. The next thing that happend changed alot of things in my life “ remember when your mom said she was feeling a little bump on her breast, well that little bump is a thing you call cancer and its not a good thing but mommy will get all better don't worry. How am I not supposed to worry my mom has a serious disease that could potentially kill her. I knew that I had to be positive and support my mom through this tough stage in her life
through the weeks I had to make sure not to show the emotions I was feeling in front of my mom because I didn't want her to worry. She was already going through enough so I made sure to do as much as possible to help around the house. I would clean the bucket whenever she would throw up.
That help me become a better person and be more independent. When I walked home alone in the 5th grade it made me feel independent and I never knew I was able to do such a thing on my own. It happened on a sunny day in the spring it was still a little brisk outside but just a sweeter would keep me warm. School was just let out and I was waiting for my mom she wasn't outside waiting for me so I thought to myself she must be stuck in traffic than a half an hour passed and she still wasn't there so I called her. She said why are you not at home shouldn't you be on the school bus by now. I said you were supposed to pick me up today because I have practice, I forgot estefan ill be there in a lil go to rosita's house but instead of hearing that I thought she said walk to our house. So I started walking but it was getting a lil late and I kept thinking to myself did she really tell me to walk home. when I got home I was surprised I walked in at around 6:30 pm everything seemed to be fine except my mom was not home. all of a sudden i hear knocking on the front door the people that were knocking seemed to mean business and were serious. when I opened the door I was shocked the police said “ we are looking for estefan is he here?” they told me that my mom called saying that I was missing. when my mom got home I felt scared I knew from the stern look on her face. “why were you stupid enough to walk home I thought you were kidnapped and i told you that you I was going to pick you up.” I regretted walking home I scared my mom and she thought she lost her only child. i learned a lot of things from that day. Some ill take and some ill leave behind.
Those incidents in my life have made me a stronger person and Ive learned alot from them. without those things happening in my life i wouldn't be there person I am right now. When my mom had breast cancer I learned to be independent and do things on my own because of that I had the courage to walk home 40 blocks which wasn't the best idea but a good way to show that I did become independent.

This blog three is a post for change i am trying to bring awareness to a topic that affects about 12% of the female population in the united states of america,
To bring awareness to my breast cancer I made a PSA informing people where they can go to get a monogram and that you're never to young to get a mammogram. this is positive because less women will get diagnosed when its at a serous stage and less people will have to worry about such a bad thing like breast cancer.
If you would like to see some information and statistics on breast cancer you can look at my first and second blog.
I think that it's a great idea for women to get mammograms at a younger age and more often because then there won't be as many serious cases and less people will die from it.
so far I have tried to show people the importance of getting a mammogram and how devastating breast cancer is, in some cases the breast has to be removed because the cancer has spread so far
I would like to acknowledge ms dunn for helping me with my blog and brainstorm what to do for my creative piece.

What is breast cancer
Breast cancer is a malignant (cancer) tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. It is found mostly in women, but men can get breast cancer, too. Here we will only talk about breast cancer in women
Some facts about breast cancer in 2012
- About 226,870 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women
- About 63,000 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be found (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).
- About 39,510 deaths from breast cancer (women)
Why i'm passionate about breast cancer
At the age of 35 my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. which meant that she would have her breast removed and she would have to go through intensive chemotherapy. when my mom had her chemotherapy she was weak and i had to do a lot of stuff for her so now i treat her as nicely as possible because it could come back.The photo you see above is of a women laying in bed after she had chemotherapy. When you get chemotherapy you lose all your hair and your imune system is not as strong.

Me gustaria informar a
tu asociacion sobre un maltrato infantile que esta pasado en esapai. Se trata
sobre un nino que se llama el bola pero su padre le pega y lo trata como si es
un animal. Esto todo empeso proque el padre de bola perdio a su hijo mayor y el
estaba muy enojodo entonces el saca todo su infelizidad en su hijo menor, si el
bola hace algo malo el padre lo mete adentro de un close y lo déjà alli. La
mama de Pablo no hace nada porque ella tiene miedo de su esposo. Hasta que un
dia el se paso la linia y casi mata a el bola. El bola se fue a la casa de su
major amigo y el padre de su major amigo lo protejio. Poravaor trata de alludar
a este nino porque sus padres no tienen las habilidades suficientes a cudiar a este nino.

Making a Fresco, Diego Rivera- Fidel Castro

Yo me llamo Fidel Castro, y yo era presidente de Cuba. Mis valores son que yo creo que todo la gente de cuba sea igual y mi política es que soy socialista, la razón porque yo soy socialista/ comunista es que quiero lo mejor para mi gente y igualdad además de verlos sobre salir y que todos sean iguales y tengan acceso a la educación y cuidado medico. Yo pelee con El Che Guevara en la Revolución Cubana para derrocar a el expresidente Batista. Mi época era muy dificil, habia muchos problemas porque a el país fue llevado a la pobresa, y además Estados Unidos estaba controlando a el país por medio del alcohol y drogas.
El mural que yo escocí se llama “Making a Fresco” y fue hecho por Diego Rivera en 1931. Lo que veo en la foto son diferentes personas y de varias clases sociales trabajando. En la foto se ve un hombre que parece ser de la clase obrera o es un trabajador en las vías del tren. El mural es muy colorido y tiene colores muy brillantes. Es una pintura que llama mucha la atracción y te penetra en ella. Los colores mas vibrantes están en la parte de arriba y en la parte de abajo tiene colores mas tenue. El la foto todos están trabajando un diferente oficio y todo se relaciona con la vida diaria. Para mi el tema de la obra es felicidad y ayudarse todos para poder tener unidad por un buen causa y contribuir algo a la comunidad de San Francisco.
Lo que paso en 1973 fue que los Estados Unidos organizo un golpe de estado, en contra de Salvador Allende (El que era el Presidente de Chile y muy buen amigo mio ) porque el era socialista y estaba aliado con Rusia. El mural que yo escocí se llama “Making a Fresco” y fue hecho por Diego Rivera en 1931. Lo que veo en la foto son diferentes personas y de varias clases sociales trabajando. En la foto se ve un hombre que parece ser de la clase obrera o es un trabajador en las vías del tren. El mural es muy colorido y tiene colores muy brillantes. Es una pintura que llama mucha la atracción y te penetra en ella. Los colores mas vibrantes están en la parte de arriba y en la parte de abajo tiene colores mas tenue. El la foto todos están trabajando un diferente oficio y todo se relaciona con la vida diaria. Para mi el tema de la obra es felicidad y ayudarse todos para poder tener unidad por un buen causa y contribuir algo a la comunidad de San Francisco.

Hola, mi nombre es Estefan Carrillo y yo voy a la
escuela de Science Leadership Academy. Mi comunidad se llama la Cuidad
Universitaria. La gente en mi comunidad le gustan las cosas naturales, ellos
también son muy el medio ambiente amistoso. Hay mucha gente de
todo el mundo y hay un grupo de gente de africana que le gusta jugar fútbol en
un parque famoso aquí en la Ciudad Universitaria. La gente es muy libre y
muchos hacen lo que quieren pero siguiendo las leyes. mi mural esta ubiqado en la 48 y baltimore en el cafe "Gold standard"
hay unas fotos de gente
corriendo o haciendo ejercicio y la palabra “NATIVO”. Yo escogí estas
cosas porque mucha gente el mi comunidad hace ejercicio y escogí la palabra
NATIVO y el teepee porque eso enseña que la gente que no vive en mi comunidad
lo se olvida de sus raíces y enseñan contribuyen su cultura a la comunidad. Los
colores yo escogí son el color naranja y hice las letras azul, verde y negro
porque esos colores salen del papel y captura tu atención. Escogí el color
naranja porque para mi es un color muy nativo y original. El color naranja fue
muy bien con las fotos que yo tenia como en la foto de fútbol. El tema de mi
mural es como la juventud sigue siendo nativo a la cultura de sus ancestros
como se visten y como actúan y compran cosas nativas a su región. Yo estoy
tratando de enviar un mensaje diciendo que si eres bueno al ambiente y haces
cosas buenas como tus ancestros puedes hacer un gran cambio en el mundo.
El rolo de el arte
publico en mi opinión es una cosa artística que enseña un mensaje al mundo
diciendo que es importante. Mi pedaco si tiene rollo porque tiene un mensaje
fuerte y enseña una historia en una manera fuerte. Mi pedaco si es arte porque
Walker cosa puede ser arte y el mio teine un mensaje. un cancion pudue ser arte
tambien solo una foto de tu mismo puede ser arte. mi opinion en mi mural es que
si es muy bonito porque tiene muchos colores y agara a tu antencion muy rapido
porque tiene photos interesantes que te dan emocion ver las.

La película de Mar adentro se trata de un hombre tetraplejico que se llamaba Ramon Sampedro. El era de la región de Galicia de España. El sufrió un accidente que lo dejo con tetraplegia . El resultado de ese accidente es que el ya no puede mover y ahora depende de otras personas para hacer cosas regulares. Por eso el se quere quetar la vida.
En la pelicula de Mar Adentro habia muchas temas contraversiales. hay preguntas como, La vida de un tetraplejico realmente es digna?, la muerte es un derecho o es un privilegio?, creas que Ramon tiene el derecho a quitarse la vida? o Creas que cuando el se mato lo lamentaba?
Como yo lo veo es que yo creo es que la vida de un tretaplejico no es digna porque ellos no pueden hacer cosas por su propia cuenta. la muerte es un derecho porque eso es tu vida y tu debes te tener el derecho a hacer lo que tu quieres con tu vida. yo creo que ramos si tiene el derecho a quitarse la vida porque es su vida y el no hay estado feliz por 26 anos. creo que cuando Ramon se mato lo lamentaba un poco porque el encontró una persona que realmente lo amaba por su por lo que el era.

Yo nacie en pomona neuva jersey el 24de noviembre del 1996 y vivi alli por 2 anos. Yo me movi a philadelphia a la edad de 3 anos y creo que a mi me gusta mas la cuidad de philadelphia que pomaona NJ. Yo soy una persona que s muy simpática, que le gusta hacer amigos. La cosa que a mi me mas importa es mantenerme en buena forma porque a mi me gusta jugar muchos deportes y si no estoy en buena forma no puedo jugar a mis mejores de mis habilidades. tengo 14 anos y me gusta jugar el fubol mucho. En el futuro yo quesiera ser un pediatra porque yo quero ser un doctor pero tambien trabajar con ninos.
