Peer Tutoring Capstone

How has my Capstone impacted the community? Statistics show that one on one learning is more effective than learning in big groups. It’s also beneficial for peers to open up and not be afraid to ask each other for help and it would help save time because the teacher would not have to spend time reteaching those who don’t pick up concepts as fast as others. For my capstone, I ran a peer tutoring program across two freshman Algebra 1 classes. The pairs/groups meet twice a week to work on homework, benchmarks, and study for quizzes and re-quizzes.They meet after school on Tuesday with the supervision of me and/or my capstone partners and once more some time later in the week, unsupervised. I worked with three other people but we all had different responsibilities. I was in charge of making sure everything went smoothly and everyone was doing what they were supposed to be doing. However, we were not the only four seniors that came and helped out. Some of the other seniors liked my program and decided to stop by and help some freshmen who were still struggling with concepts.

Across the two Algebra classes, there was a total of fourteen students who attended. The students had incentives for coming every Tuesday. For every two meetings they came to, they earned a homework pass but it wasn’t the incentives that kept them coming. They really enjoyed helping each other. My capstone has impacted the SLA community because it has taught them that they shouldn’t be afraid to ask each other for help. They even stopped asking the teacher for help every time they ran across a problem, instead they started asking each other.

Women and the Hijab

Posted by Daniel Ross on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 12:07 pm

This radio piece summarizes the struggles and misconceptions of Muslin women wearing the hijab. This topic is special and important because of the many muslims who are passionate about covering, thrones who sacrifice their lives to cover and the people who just don’t understand.  We conducted a series of interviews, in an attempt to uncover the mindset behind those who seek clarity.

About Relationships

Posted by Daniel Ross in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 8:39 pm

In the Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio forces Katherine into marriage with him. They basically skip the part where they’re supposed to get to know each other. This shows how relationships were different then vs. now. In About Last Night, Bernie and Joan meet and hit it off instantly, they rushed things and consequently, their relationship suffered temporarily. They go from have sex occasionally to arguing out of spite every time they see each other. The Taming of the Shrew and About Last night are similar in their message which is love has happy endings and that the road to happiness isn’t always easy. However in contrast, Katherine has no say in whether or not if she wants to be with Petruchio, and Bernie doesn’t take the time to get to really know Joan before he makes her his girlfriend, all he wanted was sex.

In Act 2, Scene 1, line number 202 says, “Myself am moved to woo thee for my wife.” At this point in the book, Petruchio has just met Katherine and is telling her his intentions. Katherine does not know the man at all but yet he plans a wedding on the next Sunday to come. This is how relationships were in the past. Similar to About Last Night, Joan and Bernie hardly know each other and hop right into having sex the very same night they meet.

In this scene, Bernie is explaining to his best friend Danny about last night. He tells him that he met Joan at a bar and the only reason they really wound up in the bed is because of the fact the he dated a woman Joan hated. This is the good part of their relationship but because they didn’t take the time to get to actually know each other, their relationship eventually wasn’t so great.

Both relationships reach a point where all they do is argue and someone eventually just gives in. In this particular part of the book, Petruchio is arguing with Katherine telling her to say that the sun is actually the moon. In Act 4, Scene 5, lines 21-22, Katherine submits to Petruchio by saying,“Then God be blest, it is the blessed sun. But sun it is not, when you say it is not.” Katherine is realizing that she just has to give in to Petruchio, and maybe in her mind things will get better.

In this scene, Bernie is explaining to Danny the complexity of him and Joan’s relationship. While they were constantly arguing with each other, they got to know more about each other. Bernie is thankful that they can put the bickering behind them and is so happy to have a genuine relationship with Joan. If he had never given in to Joan by telling her how much he missed and loved her, they wouldn’t be in this happy place.

The last stage of the relationships are the part where they basically start over. They forget the previous animosity that they had in their hearts for one another and move on to be happy with each other. In Act 5, Scene 2, lines 162-163, Katherine is talking about what a husband’s job is and accepting the love they provide. She says, “Thy husband is thy Lord, thy life, thy keeper, Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee.” At this point Katherine realizes that her and Petruchio may have gotten off on the wrong foot, Petruchio will truly care for her. At the end of her speech, she kisses him and you can imagine the smiles on their faces as the finally reached true happiness together.

Screen Shot 2015-04-28 at 8.05.27 PM
This is the end of the movie. Bernie and Joan are so happy and it’s real happiness. They laugh, joke, and treat each other with nothing but the upmost respect. They’ve had their ups and downs in their relationship but they still loved each other through it all. Joan realized that Bernie truly cares for her the way she cares for him.

Comparing relationships back then to relationships now, there's a clear difference in how relationships come to be like if the woman has a say in it. There's one thing that hasn't changed however. People do not take the time to get to know a person before they become involved with them. If no one takes the time to learn what the other person hates or likes, then there will be unhappiness.

Self and Changing World

Posted by Daniel Ross in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 8:11 am

Analytical Essay:

In the Yellow Bird’s, war changes the lives of many soldiers. PTSD is an outcome of the war. While the world remains ignorant to the war’s side effects, the soldiers continue to experience a change that will change their lives forever. There should be sympathy and understanding in the heart of every American when there’s a discussion of people at war.

“I was not surprised by the cruelty of my ambivalence back then. Nothing seemed more natural than someone getting killed... I had to see the world with clear eyes, to focus on the essential. We only pay attention to the rare things, and death was not rare.” p.11 People at war are stripped of morals and codes that they were taught at a young age. When in war, what’s wrong becomes right and what’s right becomes wrong. Killing is wrong, any type of violence is. Love is taught to be given to everyone, including your enemies because it’s the right thing to do. People at war are not allowed to have a heart or to show emotions because when they do, they show weakness, they’re supposed to be ruthless and be able to kill when demanded. For some, holding a gun is scary enough, but asking them to pull the trigger is another story. When Americans look at people who have been in war, compassion should be racing through their hearts because the soldiers did it so no one else had to. If soldiers were given sympathy, that would show that there is understanding. Having someone understand what you’ve been through can go a long way.

“As human beings, we have the blessing and the curse that we’re able to adapt to almost anything. No matter how extreme the circumstances you’re in, they become normal.” Because humans adapt, they don't understand. At one point, after readapting and readapting, humans stop. Some soldiers become adapted to the war lifestyle, so when they come home they can no longer readapt. As people try to understand people in war, they often figure out that war is something that needs to be experienced to understand. Once given the opportunity to walk a mile in their shoes, then there will be an understanding.

“I realized, as I stood there in the church, that there was a sharp distinction between what was remembered, what was told , and what was true. And I didn’t think I’d ever figure out which was which.” PTSD gives soldiers a fight or flight instinct caused by fear that’s stuck in their heads from war. This feeling that they have comes, even when they may not be in danger which may make them seem crazy. It comes with experience from physical harm.

“I wonder why people are the way they are. I wonder how do we justify the things that we do, because it always seems like we are doing terrible things. But the stories that we tell ourselves are always about our goodness and our idealism and that contradiction has been interesting to me throughout my whole life.” Humans try to come up with an explanation for everything. They’re always trying to fix something. Some things in life just can't be fixed. Life does not owe anyone an explanation, somethings you can only wonder why they happen.

There should be sympathy and understanding in the heart of every American when there’s a discussion of people at war. They do they job no one else wants to do. To label them as crazy is wrong, they should only be labeled heroic.

Narrative Essay:

From a small child, I was always told to reach for the stars.  “You can do anything you want in life, you just have to want it and work for it.” I remember being asked what I wanted to be when I was 9. At nine years old, you don’t the variety of jobs that are offered in the world. “I wanna work at McDonalds, it’s my favorite fast food restaurant.”

The conversation stopped. “You wanna struggle your whole life?

“You won’t even be able to support your family?”

Questions were being thrown at me. I’m just a kid, I don’t understand what I’m saying and why I’m saying. I honestly thought people at McDonalds were very kind people. Who else wants to stand at a window and wait on people. Jobs like this should be appreciated, not shunned upon.

I remember when my brother said he wanted to be a cop. My mom wanted to know why none of us wanted to be a doctor. She said McDonalds workers aren’t paid enough and being a cop is a dangerous job. All of a sudden, that statement about being whatever we want turns out to be false.

You can be anything that isn’t a danger and pays well. Society has conjured up what is an acceptable job and what isn’t. Everyone plays a part in the way the world is now, but before you can play a part, you have to find a part. In The Yellow Birds, the main character found his part in becoming a soldier.

Bartle forgot the importance if his role. He began to build a friendship with Murphy. He promised his mother that he would bring Murphy back safe and sound. The thing about promises is that you can’t make one unless it’s something you can control, you can't control death and who it strikes. That’s what the world revolves around; control. Some are born with control, some are born without it. People can’t control what they’re born into but they can control what they do with it and whether they want to work a McDonald’s job or be a doctor, it’s their decision. They should be appreciated regardless.

Police Brutality

Posted by Daniel Ross in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 8:49 pm

If Cops stopped to think about it, they would realize that having authority is not just about / does not just involve brutality , but serving justice well.It is one thing to use violence to protect oneself when in immediate danger, but another to use it to commit vicious hate crimes. Police officers have built a system of racial profiling. When they see a black man, he is already predestined to commit a crime in their eyes.  In the past decades, the African American Community has struggled to get the freedom, equality, and respect they deserve as a people because the policies have been set against them. Through their policies for punishment, police commissioners have allowed police officers to abuse their authority to belittle the African American community.

As kids, children are encouraged to admire cops. They were the real life heros. When someone was in trouble, who was to be called? On one of Cartoon Network's most popular show, Scooby-Doo, The cops of course the good guys. At the end of the episode, they would call the cops and wait for their arrival to unmask the man in the costume. There are several things you can take away from that, but what children learn is to call the cops when in fear. Now the very same people everyone was told that would protect the citizens who are in trouble, are the very same people who the African American community should fear.  Eric Garner, a 43 year old father of 6 living in New York was one of the most recent victims of police brutality. He was wrestled to the ground by five malicious police officers. The one who actually put Garner into the headlock was driven to do so by his sexual fantasies. This was not the first time that this officer had stopped him. Garner knew there was something odd about that man, afraid of what the officer might try to do Garner pleaded with him, “Don’t touch me, please,” but the badge says he has permission to do so. As he’s being choked to death by the man who wants him, he screams, “I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe, Get off me! Get off me!” They choked Garner until he could no longer fight. This situation would not have taken place if these officers had a serious police commissioner over their heads, someone who wouldn’t just let them get away with it but someone who would see the wrong and fight for the justice of Eric Garner.

Instead of being the men who once wanted everyone to be safe, the Police Commissioner  protect the ones who make the streets unsafe. This all stems from the lack of professional training for these police officers. There was a lack of discipline when these police officers were trained, without discipline officers will see the inch they’re given and take a mile. This is how it starts. They see their captain lets them get away with something minor and their minor things become major things. They are given an inch and they take advantage and take a mile.

In 2012, a study showed that every twenty eight hours, an African American was killed by an officer or vigilante. Of these killings, 43% of these were shooting based on racial profiling. Based on their skin color, officers inferred that they were in the act of committing a crime. Trayvon Martin, a kid who was brutally shot to death by alleged vigilante, George Zimmerman. Trayvon Martin was 17. He lived in a gated community with his parents. He was leaving the store with an Arizona tea and a bag of skittles, on his way home when Zimmerman gunned down the teenager. It’s getting to the point where young black men are being told by their parents what to do if confronted by a police officer. The directions are to always keep your hands in sight. When directed to do something, move slowly. This was first introduced by a show called Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. A character named Jazz was stopped by a cop. Uncle Phil told Jazz it was okay to put his hands down but Jazz refused. He went on and said, “No thank you, I put my hands down and the next thing I know, I’ll have 18 warning shots in my back.”

As the years progress, it appears that African Americans have more and more of a reason to be in fear for their lives. When the system gets to the point where it protects the people no matter the race, then African Americans will be able to live without fearing the cops.

Final Portfolio

Posted by Daniel Ross in World History - Block - C on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 11:09 pm

Throughout my 10th grade World History class, I have learned a number of things. I learned about things that I didn’t even know was a thing or things I didn’t know I was capable of doing. For example, during the second quarter we started writing plays. My play was titled Fight to the End. It’s not finished but I would say that I’m very proud of this particular assignment. At first, I was like I don’t want to do this because I’m not a great writer. Luckily Mr. Block was prepared for those who didn’t feel too confident. He partnered up with Philadelphia Young Playwrights, that’s when Kate came in and helped every student with the revising process. She also gave us great ideas when we were stuck.

This class isn’t not just a class where the teacher talks and the student listens. We were given journal entries a lot and we would write what we thought. I remember writing a Journal Entry on the topic, Criticizing Another Culture. I had never really thought about this topic. I just thought criticism was wrong but in some cases it is needed. I also remember the religion unit very well. This is also something I hadn’t really thought about. Our question that day was, What is religion? As you might be able to see, I was not too fond of religions but after this unit, i discovered why I believe in a higher power.

The Revolution unit was also one of my favorites. That unit, I researched and learned about several different revolutions in addition to the one we learned as a class which I believe was the French Revolution. We made guidelines based off of opinions we made and what we think would be a great revolution.

I have so many favorites from this class I can’t choose one over the other. But if I did have to, now I would probably say the first Mock Trial we did about Cortes. I was put into the shoes of a prosecutor. Luckily I had time to prepare. From that link are all the notes I took to prepare myself for what was to come. I really did my research on Cortes because I found him the most guilty. Well because of my great prosecuting skills, the system came in second place as in second less guilty. It was very hard to beat the Aztecs who didn’t do anything but greet Cortes with happiness and riches. It was Cortes who took advantage of them.

I also like the Renaissance Art unit. We learned a lot about how paints were made and what inspired certains painting. We had to focus on specific people. The artist I chose had a lot of painting about the seven deadly sins. From this, I assumed that not only him but a lot of the people during his time were very religious, specifically focused on Christianity. I like this unit because I love Renaissance art. It not only improved the art that was before it but it shaped the way art is being made today.

Revolution

Posted by Daniel Ross on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 6:18 pm
The unit that has just been taught to us is about revolutions. We kicked off this unit by researching the french revolution. After a few days of research, we were given specific roles of people who influenced and had an impact on the outcome of the revolution. When it was time to role play, we were given a series of questions and ideas, and as our given person we answered the question like we thought they would've felt.

We then studied the Arab Springs. After studying these two revolutions, we were assigned to make a digital story. You could've picked any topic. It's supposed to be a guide to a successful revolution. On our own, we came up with reasons as to why we thought a revolution didn't work and how it was similar to the other revolutions that failed. My digital story is about what path a revolution you're trying to start should take; violent vs. non-violent.

Negative Drawing

Posted by Daniel Ross in Art - Freshman - Hull on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 11:23 pm
Negative space is the space around/between an image. In my drawing I found negative space by cutting my linoleum block with the linoleum cutters. It helps an artist to see negative space so they can see the space around the picture or drawing. I don't think seeing in negative space drawings because it still looks the same.

It's Kind of a Funny Story Book Review

Posted by Daniel Ross in English 1 - Dunn on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 9:04 pm

It’s Kind of a Funny Story is a fantastic book by Ned Vizzini. It’s about this boy who finds his life so depressing or so he thinks; that is until he checks himself into a mental hospital and is admitted into the adult psychiatric ward. Once Craig gets a little tour of the hospital he finds that he does not belong. There are people with all types of problems there such as schizophrenics and psychopaths. Craig also has some personal problems. He has a really big crush on a girl named Nia. However Nia is his best friend’s girlfriend. His life seems like it sucks but he has things he also enjoys. He loves peeing. When he goes over to his friend’s house he’ll go into the bathroom and turn the lights off and pee.

Craig has things that make him happy too. He loves drawing art. He likes to draw road maps. When he was four he lived in an apartment in Manhattan. The pipes were exposed and became very hot in the afternoon. Anyway his dad would take him out to breakfast and ordered him pancakes. The streets were sideways and the avenues were up and down. That’s how his dad would cut his pancakes and that’s how Craig learned where he lived. They’d name the streets and made their way to their address. This was a very happy time in Craig’s life. Now Craig is in the hospital and he’s enjoying the stay.

As his stay in the hospital continues he realizes that he has other things that make him happy. He finds that art such as music and drawing makes him happy. He also meets a girl named Noel. She turns his whole world upside down. She makes him feel happy and he likes her. She likes him too but they’re are kind of shy. Noel is in the hospital for cutting herself multiple times in multiple places. They learn from each other that life may get difficult but at the end it’s not worth killing yourself over. Things get pretty rough in the hospital because Nia comes and visits. While Nia is there she flirts with him and tells him that she and her boyfriend just broke up. Some things happen in the bedroom and he disgusts her so she runs out. He say something that Noel over hears and makes her mad. They soon forgive each other and fall in love. Craig gets out of the hospital and reduces the stress building up on his shoulders.

I would recommend this book to someone else because I really enjoyed it. It’s pretty funny and it makes you stop and think. I think about my life and it could be so much worse. I’m thankful for the life I live and I’m glad I read this book.

Poverty in the US Blog #3

Posted by Daniel Ross in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 10:25 am
Poverty is a serious problem in this world. For my agent of change part of the project, I went to a Saint John Hospice on April 25th which is a soup kitchen. When I arrived there they gave me and my grandmother lunch. When 12 o’clock hit it was time to start serving food. Me and My grand mother helped setting up and giving out trays. About 300 - 500 men came through that line and it was about the saddest thing ever. Some of the men had so much pride that they didn’t even look me in the face. Some men wouldn’t say thank you and others wouldn’t even accept a tray from me. You’d be surprised at who was there. People who didn’t even look poor were there. One man who was in line patiently waiting to get his food suddenly fell out on the floor. People who work in the soup kitchen scrambled over as the man screamed I can’t breath. Some of the men didn’t even look homeless. As I talked to Brian (who made it possible for me to visit the soup kitchen) he said that many of these men are very intelligent but they just cant keep a job because they don't like being told what to do. Others had disabilities and other problems that kept them from getting a job.

During the process I encountered a few problems. Before I emailed Saint John Hospice I emailed another place. I wasn’t able to volunteer there because I had to be 18 with or without an adult. I also had to make sure I wasn’t interfering with my grand mother’s schedule because she is back and forth with doctor’s appointments and taking care of my great grandfather.

Volunteering at the soup kitchen has really had an impact on me. I realized I had so much to be thankful for. I am blessed to have what I have because things could be worse. For some of them that is their only meal everyday but they still keep a smile on their face. I also realized that things will always get better but you have to apply yourself. Some people think that homeless people are lazy bums who don’t want to do anything but the truth is things happen, some expected and some unexpected. Many of these men lost their jobs and everything went down hill. I will always remember that some people are less fortunate than others and it’s not right to make rude assumptions about them. We, as a community of Philadelphia are there for each other and there is always help when you need it.

Final Perspective Drawing

Posted by Daniel Ross in Art - Freshman - Hull on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at 6:21 pm
What is one thing that your learned specifically that you did not know before.

I did not know there was something called an orthogonal line.

How did leaning this thing make your drawings better.

Because I knew how to draw a room in 3D perspective it did not look like a 5 year old drew it.

If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently?

I would put more time into the windows.

d. What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before?

Dont worry about any mark and making mistakes.

e. What resource helped you the most and why?

Ms. Hull... She knew how to teach us and she was very helpful. She corrected us when we made mistakes.

Temptations

Posted by Daniel Ross in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, April 12, 2013 at 12:53 pm

MacBeth is a well respected man before he is seduced by Lady MacBeth and tempted by the witches.

At the beginning of the Act, Scotland is at war and they just won. The captain enter the room to deliver a message to King Duncan. He tells the King that MacBeth has won them the war. He took a man and cut him from the navel up to the chin. They give him the title “brave MacBeth.” Duncan decides that The Thane of Cawdor who was a trader needed to learn a lesson. Duncan also has a surprise in store for MacBeth. In act 1 scene 3, The witches who are dressed as nurses, and has also just killed The Captain are greeted by MacBeth and Banquo. Banquo and MacBeth insult the witches and ask what they’re doing. The witches respond to MacBeth chanting, "All hail, MacBeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!  All hail, MacBeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, MacBeth, that shalt be king hereafter!" They become very bewildered and Banquo wants to know more about his own future. They tell Banquo that he will bear generations of kings however he will not be one. The witches vanished in thin air. Right after the witches left and as they foretold he was crowned Thane of Cawdor. Later in the scene MacBeth has a soliloquy about how he want chance to crown him king. Lady MacBeth receives a note from the messenger while at her chamber. It’s a note about what has happened to MacBeth. Immediately Lady MacBeth wants more, she wants the fame and the riches and she will stop at nothing to get it.

Before Lady MacBeth gets MacBeth to kill King Duncan she seduces him.  She flirts and tells him how he will be a man. She says that he has no balls and if he ever wants to be a man he would do it. She also says that if she made a promise no matter how bad it was she would do it. After constantly fighting Lady MacBeth now gets MacBeth to kill Duncan himself. In Act 2 scene 2, Lady MacBeth says, “ Had he not resembled My father as he slept, I had done’t. “ This shows that Lady MacBeth is all talk and no action. She talked a lot about wanting to be a man and that MacBeth is less of a man if he doesn’t kill Duncan.  Duncan is now dead and MacBeth comes back to Lady MacBeth with the daggers. MacBeth is remorseful of his actions. Lady MacBeth gets upset of how guilty he is. When she notices the daggers she becomes frustrated with him, so she takes them back and places them on the guards. When she comes back she looks traumatized and has blood all over herself. She tells him that their hands are of the same color but she shame to where a heart so white. MacBeth and Lady MacBeth quickly go back to their chamber and washes their sins away. At the end of the act King Duncan is found dead in his bed and two bloody guards with daggers. MacBeth kills them so they won't have the chance to deny anything. Malcolm and Donalbain flee in fear that Scotland will think they killed their father. MacBeth is now granted the king of Scotland. MacBeth think he’s out of the clear but there are two very wise people who suspect how Duncan died.

At the very beginning of Act 3 Banquo has a soliloquy about his thoughts on Duncan’s death. He says, “Thou hast it now - king, Cawdor, Glamis, all, As the weïrd women (witches) promised; and I fear Thou play’dst most foully for’t. Yet it was said It should not stand in thy posterity, But myself should be the root and father Of many kings.” After his soliloquy MacBeth walks in and invites Banquo to dinner to celebrate his promotion. Banquo accepts but then acts if though he wants to get away from MacBeth as soon as possible. MacBeth fears that he knows what he has done. MacBeth also fears that Banquo will bear generations of kings as the weïrd sisters told him. His fear leads to getting murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance. While on the train back to the chamber the murders succeed in killing Banquo however Fleance escapes. Everyone arrives for dinner and takes their seats. While the table is being set up the murderers arrive to give MacBeth the news. MacBeth has a fit but calms down and gets back to dinner. As he is eating a ghost walks up on the table and heads straight for him. The ghost stops in front of him and points. MacBeth becomes terrified as the ghost resembles Banquo; bloody and beaten to death. Throughout dinner he sees Banquo and Lady MacBeth tells the guest to leave before MacBeth’s guilt becomes more than he can bear.

MacBeth decides to visit the weïrd sister to see his destiny in Act 4 scene 1. The witches once again gives him information to provoke him and make rash decisions. The witches sends Apparitions to answer his concerns. The first Apparition tells him, “MacBeth, MacBeth, MacBeth, beware MacDuff, Beware the Thane of Fife.” MacBeth now has no one to fear but MacDuff. The second Apparition tells him, “MacBeth, MacBeth, MacBeth.... Be bloody, bold, and resolute. Laugh to scorn The pow’r of man, for none of woman born Shall harm MacBeth.” Now MacBeth is pretty sure that he will not fall to anyone. The third Apparition says, “ Be lion-mettled, proud and take no care Who chafes, frets, or where conspirers are. MacBeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill Shall come against you.” MacBeth is now positive t`hat no man living can kill him. However he is terribly wrong. Thinking he can't be stopped he decides he will act on impulse. He goes after MacDuff not knowing he flead to receive help from England. MacBeth decides to kill MacDuff’s family instead. Meanwhile in England Malcolm and MacDuff gather and army and heads for Scotland.

In Act 5, the army from England has arrived. Lady MacBeth has just been announced dead when the messenger comes in to break some bad news. He says that as he watched Dunsinane hill he noticed the trees of Birnam Wood moving towards the hill. MacBeth was very shocked however he still thought no one could kill him because everyone is born of women. MacBeth later gets into fights with several different soldiers but he kills them. MacDuff has now found his way to MacBeth. MacDuff is ready to blow his brains out but MacBeth says no one born of woman shall harm him. MacDuff responds, “Despair thy charm And let the angel whom thou still hast served Tell thee, MacDuff was from his mother’s womb Untimely ripped.” MacBeth now realizes that he made a huge mistake and regrets what he did. MacDuff tell him that he can live and bow down to King Malcolm or die. MacBeth chooses death and so MacDuff cuts his head off. He’d rather die on his feet than live on his knees.

In conclusion if the witches had not told MacBeth what was set out for him, he most likely would not have done any of those actions that lead up to his death. Lady MacBeth also played a part in these actions. MacBeth wasn't greedy for anything at all when he was announced Thane of Cawdor but his wife seduces and argues with him until he feels that Duncan needs to be dead. Then the witches tell him that that he can not fall to anyone born of women leaving him ruthless. MacBeth was a tragic hero.

MacBeth was an honest man; loyal and respected man

He fought the war for Scotland

Brave MacBeth was his nick name cause he never ran

Unseeming men from navel to throat

Killed that man like he was a roach

Witches told MacBeth he had a lot in store

"All hail, MacBeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!

All hail, MacBeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!

All hail, MacBeth, that shalt be king hereafter!"

MacBeth only wanted to know more

Banquo ask what are my plans

The witches say in power will be your kins

King Duncan said someone needs to be promoted

MacBeth said I would be truly devoted

Lady MacBeth is overcome with greed

And won’t stop until pleased

Let’s kill the king, he won’t miss his ring

He won’t even miss a thing

You’re not a man

Unless you give no pics

You know what I want

You know what makes me tic

Please I’m asking you just kill this itch

MacBeth says Fine fine just shut up

What’s wrong with power and a few bucks

Shoot maybe even get a pup

“Had he not resembled My father as he slept, I had done’t.“

Lady MacBeth isn't so blunt

All talk, no action

Can,t walk the walk, don't talk the talk

MacBeth went in for the kill

It was a good deal

Duncan is now bloody and bashed

MacBeth will soon find he wrote a check he couldn’t cash

Bloody was his hands

He killed the king of Scotland

He didn’t mean to end his life

He knows it wasn’t right

Now he has to hide his life

He can’t even sleep at night; can’t get it off his mind

He never thought he’d do it

Whatever happened to him

What started out as simple promotion

Turned into a real bloody situation

He’s just thinking of the army that he’s facing

It makes him wanna cry

The apparitions tells him beware MacDuff

You shall not fall unto anyone born of women

He thought life would be rough

You shall die when the forest walks to the hill

He sees the forest moving know the intentions are too kill

Lady MacBeth couldn’t go on so she swallowed a few pills

MacBeth not so ticked

Ready to kill MacDuff until

He says from my mothers womb untimely ripped

They fought the battle of the king

When MacDuff cut the neck

of MacBeth; The fat lady sang

You and The World Blog #2

Daniel Ross                                                                                              January 13, 2013

While I was researching poverty I came across some very intriguing facts. According to the Webster's Dictionary, poverty is the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor. Poverty is a really big epidemic. The median household income in the United States is $46,326. In 2011 nearly 50 million Americans, more than 16 percent of the population, are struggling to survive. In 2011, 50.1 million Americans lived in households where food was scarce, 33.5 million adults and 16.7 million children. Each day 10,00 babies are born dead and the same amount of newborns die within a month of birth. Over 1.4 billion people in the developing world live below the poverty line.

I found this website which lets you view your neighborhood’s statistics. Here’s a look at my neighborhood. Now to be considered middle class your income must be at least $40,000 a year. To be considered upper class you must pull at least $100,00 a year. As you can see, there is 43% of the residents with income below the poverty line. That’s really high for there only to be 176 houses. That means that 24 residents are living off of less than $26,000 per year. That’s $2,166 a month, and $541 a week. The average American spends $200-$300 a week on groceries. This only leaves about $300 for the rest of the week which may seem a lot not but it’s not enough for a family.

I decided to research a little more and found someone in my neighborhood to interview. However they are above the poverty line. He does have a job, but it isn't the highest paying job. He also has two children who he deeply cares for. He really is struggling to make ends meet. His electricity is currently off and uses candles for light. Sometimes the only meal his children get is at school. This man’s life may sound very depressing but, he can honestly say that he is blessed. He could be jobless, he could be homeless but he’s not. Sure he’s struggling but at least he can come home to a nice, dry, warm bed every night.

The Color of Water

Posted by Daniel Ross on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 2:07 pm

My independent reading book is The Color of Water by James McBride. It’s A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother.  There are so many good reviews about the book.  The Color of Water won the 1997 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for literary. It was the ALA Notable Book of the Year and spent more than two years on The New York Times bestseller list.

The “Color of Water” is about two characters; Ruth and James. Ruth’s role is to make sure her children are taught everything they can be taught. She was born on the 1st of April 1921 in Poland. Her family fled to America and settled in Suffolk, Virginia. She lived with her parents and siblings. Her parent’s relationship was worthless. Her father constantly threatened to send her mom to Poland and he sexually abused Ruth.  At the age of 17 she decided to leave for New York. There she got married and had 9 children by a black man. Her husband died so she remarried, producing another 3 children. When he passed she took care of them.

Ruth has 12 young biracial children. They always wonder why their mother is so light meanwhile they are dark. When this question came up she often answered, “you’re a human being, educate yourself or you’ll be a nobody.” It’s hard for the youngest child because his sibling pick on him. Their mother doesn’t make a lot of money so they fight for food.  James, the author sees his mom as an embarrassment and is often worried that someone will hurt her. He’s afraid because she’s the only white woman living in a Negro dominant neighborhood

James deals with a person vs. society conflict. He thinks that the community will not accept his mother because she’s “light-skinned.” I liked the book but it can really be confusing at times because it is told from 2 different points of views.  However I would not recommend this book to a friend because it can get complicated.

Music is a way to express yourself. It opens doors of opportunity.  It's a way to express yourself. The type of music you listen to; whether it's jazz or rap, it expresses your personality. A world without music is hard for me to imagine. I can't go a day without listening to music and that's why I designed my slide like this.

Poverty

Poverty

BY: Daniel Ross

MY research is on poverty and how it affects our nation. About 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day. There are 2.2 billions children on earth living in poverty. 1 billion of these children live in poverty. 21,000 of these children die everyday of starvation. There is plenty of food in the world to go around. Then why are so many people dying everyday of hunger? The problem is that people who are hungry are stuck in severe poverty. Their money is very scarce for them to buy enough food to nourish themselves. This means that they are malnourished all the time and being so leads to weakness and sickness. This makes it extremely harder for them to find work because they are so sick and weak. These people didn’t want this life. Poverty can be caused by the amount of education, skill, experience, and intelligence. It can also be cause by poor health, old age, or even disabilities. Almost 1 billion people entered the 21st century unable to read or sign their names. 121 million children are out of an education. In this economy you need to have at least a Bachelor’s Degree to find a decent job.

This picture is a representations of my home network. Comcast is my service provider. My phone and laptop is connected to the wi-fi. I learned that service providers can have all types of firewall. The wi-fi can only accept certain number of users. The ethernet cord is hooked up to the desktop because the desktop cant use wi-fi. We also hook it up to the xbox so we can have xbox live.
