Dylan Long's Capstone

Posted by Dylan Long in Capstone - Thompson - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 12:40 am

Student Name:

Dylan Long

In-school mentor’s name:

Douglas Herman

Out-of-school mentor’s name and affiliation:

Dan Long; Father & mentor photographer

Topic Summary:

The goal of this project was to develop and explore a deeper understanding & skill in the art of photography and photo editing, while building up a professional portfolio and letting new photographic styles and techniques evolve.

Abstract:

The inspiration behind this project was ultimately rooted in my passion for photography and visual art. I wanted to develop and improve my skills as a photographer, capture and create art that I would be proud to call mine, and develop a professional portfolio of work to help launch me into professional opportunities. I had been shooting live music for years prior to this project, and I felt I was ready for this next step in my career. I conducted extensive research on the mechanics of cameras and how to manipulate them to achieve the results I wanted, with the help of my mentor Mr. Douglas Herman and my father Dan Long, both professional photographers/artists. As a result of this project, I have an extensive body of work that reflects my growth as a photographer, I have loads of more experience and work under my belt, and I have an intensely deeper understanding of the functionality and artistry behind photography. I aspire to continue making art and capturing beautiful images of live music when I go off to college, while saving up for more professional gear and hopefully landing paying gigs with reputable outlets. I found this project very successful & rewarding by applying SLA’s system of core values to my process from start to finish.

Nikon. "Digitutor D5100 | Nikon." Digitutor D5100 | Nikon. Nikon Corporation. <http://www.nikonusa.com/en_US/o/fMZVV67lYK5ioJrwanFGgpduihI/Video/Digitutor/index.html>.

I selected this source because it gives a professional insight into how to use my specific camera, the Nikon 5100. I found it extremely reliable because this extensive interactive walkthrough was provided by the very maker of my camera, Nikon. From this source I refreshed myself on the specific features of my camera and how to apply these features to my work to come up with the best images that I can be taking.

Nikon. "Shooting a Rock Concert." Concert Photogaphy Tips. Nikon Corporation. <http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Learn-And-Explore/Article/fyui3bsa/shooting-a-rock-concert.html>.

I selected this source because it gives a professional insight into how to use a professional camera in a live music setting. I found it extremely reliable because this extensive article on concert photography offered visual examples along with the settings information for each image, and also included was an extensive article talking about both a logistic and artistic standpoint on concert photography, along with a comments section that offered further collaboration among fellow photographers. From this source I was able to draw more knowledge and inspiration in my photography.

"Nightclub Photography Tips: Camera and Flash Settings." Nightclub Photography Tips: Camera and Flash Settings. The Nightclub Photographer, n.d. Web. <http://www.nightclubphotographytips.info/p/nightclub-photography-tips-camera.html>.

I selected this source because it gives a professional insight into how to use a camera and flash effectively in a nightclub/darkly lit setting, which is where I am often doing concert photography. I found it fairly reliable because the information on the website is consistent with photographic settings and techniques. From this source I was able to draw lots more knowledge concerning lighting in a darkly lit environment, which is essential to be adept in when it comes to low-light concert photography.

"Concert Review." Concert Review. Twp.duke.edu. Duke University. <https://twp.duke.edu/uploads/assets/concert.pdf>.

I selected this source because it gives a professional insight into how to write a concise, well-written concert review. Part of my job with the blog Phawker along with taking pictures of the show is writing a 150-200 word review of the show as well. It’s a very demanding job as a teenager because I have to write with the quality of an adult journalist. I found this source extremely reliable because it is a document offered by Duke University in North Carolina. From this source

Bray, Simon. "10 Steps for Building a Photography Portfolio to Be Proud Of - Tuts+ Photo & Video Article." Photo & Video Tuts+. Tuts. <http://photography.tutsplus.com/articles/10-steps-for-building-a-photography-portfolio-to-be-proud-of--photo-3991>.

I selected this source because it gives a professional insight into the process of building up a professional portfolio of photography. My project primarily consists of various different mediums of showcasing my work, and thus I decided to do some professional research on the best way to go about it. From this source, I learned a lot about what looks good to the eye when it comes to preparing pieces of art. I learned about storylines with images, color schemes, and other interesting ways to arrange and isolate images.

"HOW TO PLAN AN ART EXHIBITION: TO DO/ CHECKLIST." HOW TO PLAN AN ART EXHIBITION: TO DO/ CHECKLIST. Ketchikan Arts. Ketchikan Arts. Web. <http://ketchikanarts.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/HOW-TO-PLAN-AN-ART-EXHIBITION.pdf>.

I selected this source because it gives a professional insight into the process of planning and executing a professional art gallery. I think it is a very trustworthy and legitimate source because the ideas explain in this article are extremely helpful and insightful, and relevant to the topic. From this source I gathered a potential game plan for the end of the year show for all of the photography students and I am now far more aware about how to orchestrate an art gallery and collaborate with others to make it even better.

Photo Book Girl. "How to Make Your Own Digital Photo Book - Digital Photography School." Digital Photography School RSS. Digital Photography School, n.d. Web. <http://digital-photography-school.com/how-to-make-your-own-digital-photo-book/>.

King, Julie Adair. Digital Photography for Dummies. New York, NY: Wiley Pub., 2002. Print.

I selected this book because I own it and it is an extremely reliable source of information. Inside of this book is quite literally everything you need know on how to become extremely adept at handling DSLR’s (digital single-lens reflex camera), which is one of my goals in this capstone. From this source, I learned various new techniques and tricks that have helped me and will continue to help me explore and advance my skills in photography.

Interview: Dan Long

“I am a professional concert photographer who has been photographing concerts for over thirty years. I have used various different cameras and shot shows in various different ways, and I have been my son’s primary life mentor since he first picked up his Nikon D3100. I have taught Dylan almost everything he knows about photography and have guided him through many projects and new experiences with his camera. I am continuing to do the same thing to this day.”

Interview: Douglas Herman

“I am Dylan’s in-school mentor. For this year, Dylan and his other classmates are going to be helping prepare another annual SLA Photolab student gallery. I am going to be helping both the students as a whole with this art gallery, and Dylan individually. I am going to be giving Dylan guidance on executive decisions to make about his photography and how he portrays it, tips and advice on how to improve the quality of his work and his work ethic, and anything else he needs along the way.”

Project #1: Dylan Long & Brian Birkmire

Posted by Dylan Long in Anatomy and Physiology - Best - E on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 6:17 am

Toxoplasmosis: An infection disease that is caused by contact with a parasitic organisms called Toxoplasm gondii. It can be either acquired or be present at birth. “The congenital type is a result of a maternal infection during pregnancy that is transmitted to the fetus and involves lesions of the central nervous system. These lesions may lead to blindness, brain defects and more serious conditions. The disorder may be most severe when it is transmitted to the fetus during the second through sixth month of pregnancy.” WebMD.

A. Skeletal System

  1. The skeletal system is the internal framework that supports the body and cradles its organs. The skeletal system is responsible for the body’s various movement abilities. The skeletal system is responsible for fat storage.

  2. At a microscopic level, the bone is extremely complicated structure. It is filled with various different types of passageways and tunnels, carrying nerves, blood vessels, and other nutrients for the bone cells among other characteristics.

  3. In embryos, the skeletal system is primarily comprised of hyaline cartilage. It does not contain any nerves or blood. Once the baby is born and becomes a small child, the cartilage will be almost fully replaced by bone. This process of bone formation is called ossification. Once cartilage has concreted itself at certain spots and joints in the skeletal system, bones begin to both lengthen and widen simultaneously, eventually growing into full adult-sized bones.

  4. Fracture types: Comminuted, Compression, Depressed, Impacted, Spiral, and Greenstick. The healing process is a 4 step process. In order, the steps towards a bone healing are: Hematoma formation, fibrocartilage callus formation, bony callus formation, bone remodeling.

  5. A newborn infant’s skull is very flexible, and can contort to the birth canal if necessary during birth. The adult skull is hardened and cannot slide or move around. The fontanels are the gaps that are first in our skulls when the major parts of our skull are still sliding around.

  6. The spine serves as the axial support for the body. It extends from the skull to the pelvis, where it transmits the weight of the body to the lower limbs. Before a human born, the spine instead consists of 33 bones called vertebrae. Vertebrae are designed to minimize shock while offering the spine maximum flexibility.

  7. The three main types of joints are synarthroses, amphiarthroses and diarthroses. Those joints are in order from least movable to most movable.

B. Nervous System
  1. The nervous system is the master controlling and communicating system of the human body. From head to toe, your body is aligned and connected with nerves. Every thought, act, or emotion is reflected by the nervous system.

  2. The general function of the nervous system is to communicate what you see (sensory input) with what you do correctly (motor output.) For example, when you see a stop sign while driving, your sensory input then processes through the brain the memory and meaning of what you see, resulting the motor output of using your muscles to brake the pedal. This means that the nerves in your eyes communicated with the nerves by your muscles to make you put your foot on the pedal and stop.

  3. Central nervous system is the system responsible for integrating sensory information and responding to that

  4. The tree-like structures that comprise neurons are called dendrites, and they are enabled to function and interact by synapses.

  5. Exteroceptors - Near the surface of the skin and are responsible for tactile sensations such as; touch, pain, temperature, and also for vision, hearing, smell, and taste.

    1. Interoceptors - Respond to stimulations internally like organs and blood vessels

    2. Proprioceptors - These are responsible for stimulations within the skeletal muscles; ligaments, tendons, and joints.

  6. A nerve impulse is a hit or miss situation. When it happens, it’s either over the entire axon or doesn’t happen at all. (this one is long lol)

  7. Reflex arc - the pathways in which reflexes occur. Reflexes are quick, rapid, involuntary responses to stimuli.

  8. Cerebral Hemispheres: Divided into two parts, the left and right hemispheres. Each hemisphere is made of an outer gray matter, cerebrum, and an inner white matter. In mammals, the hemispheres are connected by the corpus callosum, a bundle or large nerve fibers. Smaller commissures, the anterior commissures, posterior commissures, and the hippocampal commissure also join the hemispheres and are present in other vertebrates along the spinal cord. These commissures transfer information between the two hemispheres to coordinate local functions.

  • Spinal Cord: A long tube extending from the medulla oblongata to the pelvic region of the spinal column. It is made up of bundles of nerve tissues and support cells for the body. The brain and spinal cord together make up the central nervous system. The spinal cord’s primary function is to transfer neural signals between the brain and the rest of the body. It also contains neural circuits that can independently control reflexes. The cord has three major functions: a conduit for motor information, where the signals travel down the spinal cord, as a conduit for sensory information in the reverse direction, and lastly as a center for coordinating certain reflexes.

  • Diencephalon: The region of the embryonic vertebrate neural tube that helps rear forebrain structures. It is made up of four parts; the thalamus, the subthalamus, the hypothalamus, and the epithalamus. The optic nerve attaches to the diencephalon and it runs through the optic canal to the eye, the optic nerve is responsible for vision.

  • Brain stem: Posterior part of the brain that connects to the spinal cord. In humans, it usually is said to include the medulla oblongata, pons, and part of the midbrain. It provides the the main motor and sensory information to the face and neck by the cranial nerves, and of those twelve nerves there are ten that come from the brainstem. Although it is small, it is very important because this is where the nerve connections of the motor and sensory systems from the main part of the brain pass through to the rest of the body.

  • Cerebellum: Part of the brain that plays a massive role in motor control. It also is involved in cognitive function and language/attention, and regulating fear/pleasuring responses. The cerebellum is not responsible for the actual movement but instead about precise timing, coordination, and precision. It receives information from sensory systems in the spinal cord and finely tunes the motor skills that will be the outcome. Cerebellum damage can cause disorders in fine movement, equilibrium, posture, and motor learning.

9. Well any injuries that have the potential to mess up your brains proper growth can be harmful. Also, any injury that has the chance to puncture nerves can mess the system. For example, if you break your back, sometimes people break a certain spot and the result is paralyzation in their lower body or another body part.

C. Digestive System
  1. The digestive system is the key factor of where our body receives its nutrients and energy. The parts of the system include; the mouth where you intake food and break it down with your teeth and saliva so it’s easier for the body to digest, the esophagus where the food is transferred from the mouth to the stomach, the stomach where the process of digestion occurs when acids (enzymes) break down the crushed food so that the nutrients can be absorbed, the small intestines where the three parted 22-foot muscle tube releases more enzymes to further break down foods from the pancreas and bile from the liver, the pancreas where it secretes enzymes into the first part of the small intestines called the duodenum, the liver where it processes the nutrients absorbed from the small intestines, the gallbladder where it stores bile then releases it into the duodenum to absorb and digest fats, the large intestines (colon) where the broken down matter is passed through as water is extracted and the food and debris/bacteria then gets pushed into the rectum usually once or twice a day, the rectum which is an 8-inch chamber that connects to the anus which receives the stool from the colon and holds it until it’s time to be released, and finally the anus where the muscles help release the waste from your body, and there are two types of muscles doing this (internal/external sphincters) that tell you what’s coming out is either liquid, gas, or solid.

  2. It is released by the salivary glands and it consists of about 99.5% of water and the remaining 0.5% is electrolytes, mucus, enzymes, glycoproteins, and antibacterial compounds that break down the foods by chemical reactions.

  3. The small finger-like tentacles provide a larger surface area for the intestines and while matter passes through, the special cells are able to transport substances into the bloodstream. The villi don’t help with digestion, but instead help with nutrition absorption.

  4. The muscular walls of the stomach churn and mix the contents, almost as if they were a washing machine. Food is typically mixed and churned for 2-3 hours before moving into the intestines. Also, while the process is happening, the stomach walls release enzymes that help break down the food more at a microscopic level.

  5. Amylase: in the saliva and it helps break down carbohydrates

  • Gastric Juice: made up of multiple chemicals including; pepsin which breaks down proteins, and gastric lipase which breaks down certain lipids

  • Pancreatic lipase/amylase

  • Nucleases: helps digest nucleic acids

  • Bile salts: helps digestion of dietary fats

  • Peptidases: break down smaller proteins

  • Sucrase:  this breaks sucrose into monosaccharides.

  • Maltase:  this breaks maltose into monosaccharides.

  • Lactase:  this breaks lactose into monosaccharides.

6. Water, Lipids, Carbohydrates, Proteins, Vitamins & Minerals

Science & Society Q2 Benchmark

Ingredients

(1 serving)

2 Fresh Avocados

1 Lime

1 Package of Cilantro

1 Onion

Garlic

Salt

Tools

1 cutting board

1 sharp cutting knife (large)

1 spoon (large)

2 bowls (1 large 1 small)

1 tupperware

Directions

  1. Take your avocados and split them open by cutting the outer shell open in a 360 fashion around the entire shell. Once you have completed the cut, twist the avocado open into two halves. Take your knife and whack the center of it onto the pit so your knife is wedged in the pit, turn your knife 90 degrees and remove your knife; the pit will come with it!

  2. Use your spoon to scoop out the avocado from each of the halves and empty it into your large bowl.

  3. Once all your avocado is in your bowl, throw out the shells and pits and mix your avocados to a pasty texture.

  4. Take out your cutting board, large knife, cilantro, onion and lime.

  5. Chop up your cilantro and onion into small diced pieces and dump them into your large bowl.

  6. Cut your lime into eighths and squeeze anywhere from 1-8 pieces of lime into your guacamole at your preference.

  7. Use your spoon to stir your bowl thoroughly so that all of the ingredients mix together with the avocado.

  8. At your own discretion/preference, add a couple sprinkles of salt to your guacamole.

  9. Use your spoon to scoop your guacamole out of the bowl and into your tupperware.

  10. Enjoy your fresh all-natural guacamole with some chips or tacos!

Analysis

The ingredients that I used in my recipe are simple, all-natural, healthy and can be found in the local grocery market or supermarket. All 100% of this food is whole food and not a single ingredient is processed; only vegetables, herbs and fruits! With my dish, there is no need to worry about any added sugars, fats, preservatives or artificial additives. Unless you have an allergic reaction with one of the ingredients, this is a healthy meal that will yield only good things for your body! In addition to being a great standalone dish, my guacamole is a fantastic way to increase both the flavor and nutrition of many common dinner meals! Going to a party and need to bring something along? My guacamole takes a quick ten minutes to concoct and tastes delicious. It can also be added onto tacos, enchiladas and more.

The ingredients that go into this guacamole (there are few) all come from the local grocery, which likely comes from all over the place. What I do know is that these fresh ingredients are not mass produced with artificial additives and preservatives. My ingredients come from real plantations and farms, and are transported to the local markets while retaining their fresh and authentic essence.

This meal does not cost much at all! With the finer ingredients, this meal falls under the $10 range. In comparison with fast food, guacamole and chips is far more healthy, filling and budget-friendly than fast food. In addition, you can make it in your own home! No need to make any side-tracked pit stops on the way home, guacamole is easy to make it under ten minutes! The thing that I enjoy the most which is another comparison that can be made between guac and fast food is that buying fast food supports massively corrupt corporations, and buying the ingredients for guacamole supports small, local businesses!

There are very few (if any at all) social ramifications of my guacamole. The economy prospers from the buying and selling of the ingredients, the one(s) consuming the guacamole are obviously extremely satisfied, and the ingredients are all natural! The avocados and cilantro come from the farmers market around my home, specifically in the 9th Street Market. Natural ingredients are sold there in the masses by Spanish families. The ingredients presumably come from all over the world! Avocados grow on trees, cilantro grows on farms, et cetera! Once all of these ingredients are combined, you are in for an absolute treat.

I learned a lot about nutrition this quarter! I learned about the various body parts and how many different ingredients and nutrients affect our body. I learned that sugar and fat are the leading cause for obesity, and that a LOT of America is obese. Even more of America is destined to become obese in the near future too! I learned that exercise is only half of staying in shape, you must have a healthy balanced diet on a consistent basis. The biggest problem for nutrition in America is the fact that we make consistently poor decisions about our nutrition and we feed ourselves pure garbage. I am very eager to continue making positive changes towards a better and healthier diet and lifestyle as time goes on.

The Thief Of Always Book Review

Clive Barker, horror and fiction mastermind, tells a riveting journey that delves deep into the themes of utopia and mystery in the work of fiction “The Thief of Always”. Clive finds a unique balance between paradox and ordinary as 10 year old Harvey Swick lives out a wondrous life in his own utopia, called the Holiday House. However, sheer perfection has its low points, as for what Harvey will soon find out, utopia cannot truly exist, and behind all good, there is some bad. The Holiday House serves as a true test to Harvey’s wisdom and knowledge as he is subjected to the countless illusions that comprise this phenomenal tale.

The concept of the Holiday House seems very simple and direct: The house serves as a safe haven from all that isn’t what it shouldn’t be, offering homemade cookies made fresh from the oven, a couple nice children who serve as the ideal buddies, and endless activities and fun. The somewhat chilling effect that is given off by the story is the severity of the perfection occurring in this reality. For every day that passes by at the Holiday House, back in reality, an entire year passes. This goes hand in hand with the fact that for each day that passes at the house, all four seasons occur throughout each day. The Holiday House’s extremely deceiving facade is a perfect challenge for the mature and wise mind of Harvey Swick. The seemingly perfect environment, where every morning is Christmas, everything has purpose, and not a dull moment exists, was simply too perfect to trick Harvey. After consulting with a fellow resident around his age named Lulu, he realizes that she isn’t really happy, at all. He discovers that the owner of the house, Mr. Hood, is imprisoning the children with this false utopia. The fact that Harvey is so intelligent and can process such mature and adult-level thoughts makes the read very satisfying, as rarely do we see a ten year old doing the things Harvey did.

The recurring theme in this story is the comparison between what is real and what is illusion. These main topics incite deep thought and deeper meanings under the plot. The sense of otherworldliness within this seemingly ever so normal environment is a prime example of paradox and illusion. This characteristic of the book makes it only more alluring, as it becomes almost effortless to lose yourself in the realms and layers of the story. This strong trait that the book possesses makes it a fantastic read for the more mature audience. This asset brings along another powerful comparison to the novel, which is the comparison of audiences. The book remains simple enough for rather young individuals to thoroughly enjoy the plot, while the deeper meanings will satisfy the needs of the more mature, deep thinking reader.

Low points in this story are scarce. The only ones realistically fathomable are the writing tense (the story is written in third person, some people may much rather prefer first person), the fact that the book had no successor or series along with it, or, complimenting that flaw, that the book was just too short. However, it is still an impressive accomplishment to fit a story of such thought provoking themes into 225 rather small pages. The writing is superb and has a classic flow that allows the reader to forget their surroundings and find themselves immersed in the plot. Clive is a very naturally gifted writer; having been a writer since the 1980’s it’s an understatement to say he’s had some experience in the field. Being an adept horror writer, this novel is strongly influenced by that trait of Mr. Barker. The vibe that is given off throughout the story is a chilling, eerie vibe, and I believe that comes directly from the author’s past experiences in writing.

I would recommend this book to just about any reader who is looking for a great, well rounded story. The length is suitable for most audiences, and within this length are incredible new thoughts and ideas to be explored. Clive Barker has done a fantastic job weaving and intertwining realities in this book. The blend of what is real and what is illusion will captivate any reader, age seven or seventy, and leave them reflecting upon their own reality, what is real and what is not, and other philosophical theories. This thought provoking novel is a wonderful read, but beware, just like Harvey, you may lose track of time after entering the realms of the thief of always.

Title: The Thief Of Always

Author: Clive Barker

Publisher: HarperCollins

Date of Publication: Nov. 18th, 1992

Number of pages: 225 (first edition), 240 (newer edition)

Genre: = Fiction

My creative piece is a drawing made by myself. When reading this book, I got a sense of trippyness, mystery and illusion. In this picture, I drew the house (one of the main subjects of the story), and incorporated many trippy images and designs. On the bottom in the pathway towards the house, I have a double headed creature. The top is a monster and the bottom is a perfect girl. I used this to show the comparison between the good and bad that comprises the Holiday House.

How does writing allow me to connect?

Posted by Dylan Long in English 3 - Rami - D on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 2:11 pm
Writing lets me convey my inner deepest thoughts into something tangible that people can understand and find inspiration from. I personally don't write that much but I deeply admire the writing that inspires me. I love inspiring quotes and poems and short literary pieces because I feel they bring me new ideas and thoughts that I had not previously had. I feel like writing opens my mind.

Q4 Benchmark: Othello Journals

English Journal #1

The entire time, Iago is speaking to both Desdemona and Cassio. His soliloquy will be cut off by Desdemona.

IAGO

"She that was ever fair and never proud,

Had tongue at will and yet was never loud,

Never lacked gold and yet went never gay,

Fled from her wish and yet said “Now I may,”

She that being angered, her revenge being nigh,

Bade her wrong stay and her displeasure fly,

She that in wisdom never was so frail

To change the cod’s head for the salmon’s tail,

She that could think and ne'er disclose her mind,

See suitors following and not look behind,

She was a wight, if ever such wights were—"

I believe him to be speaking in a smooth and passionate voice, with possible slight hand gestures. He is also speaking towards the audience, so his body would be half facing the audience and half facing the two other characters. On stage, an actor can  never have his back turned to the audience because then the audience both cannot see his expression or gestures, but more importantly can't hear them. Iago could possibly be slowly walking about the stage while he describes to Desdemona the woman he would praise. During this soliloquy, he does not change emotion or mood, he sticks to his suave tone. He might gaze up to the sky or do something deep because he is talking very passionately. When Desdemona cuts him off (in the context), he will turn to face directly her to hear what she is saying.

English Journal #2

In Act II, Scene I. Cassio gets rather flirty and hands on with Desdemona.

In Act II, Scene III. Cassio gets in a brawl with Montano and stabs him.

Cassio observes first hand that everything is alright. He is not confronted about flirting with Desdemona, and he can't even think straight when he's extremely drunk and fighting Montano. However, after the brawl, he becomes deeply ashamed because he loses his lieutenancy.

Up until the brawl, Cassio observes that he is apparently doing a good job being Othello's lieutenant, as he is still receiving praise from him. Iago either doesn't talk to him or lies to him so that he doesn't blow him plan. Cassio also observes a lack of being told to stop flirting with Desdemona, so he continues to do so. Iago does notices it, but does not tell him. This is because he can use it against Cassio as part of his plan.

I think in Cassio's instance, we can see that he honestly is inexperienced and a little oblivious to his surroundings in general. Sure, all the characters are being either sneaky or non-confrontational, but he is making very bold mistakes. His motivation is geared towards being a good lieutenant but we can better understand that he is too immature and foolish to be a good lieutenant.

English Journal #3

Michael Cassio was the protege of a famous war veteran named Armin Van Buuren. Armin had won many battles all throughout Venice during his adulthood, and Venice needed a new powerhouse war soldier. Armin spotted Michael on the streets of Venice and had the gut feeling that he would make an amazing soldier. He took Michael under his wing and taught him everything that a soldier needed to know. Michael was then released into the streets of Venice being a freelancing lieutenant. Othello spotted Michael and had the same gut feeling that Armin first had about Michael. Othello took Michael under his wing just like Armin did and Michael became his lieutenant. However, as the years passed with Michael being Othello's lieutenant, Michael became cocky and began to try less and less. He still remained a high-ranked lieutenant, but he eventually lost all of his experience and skills and became an inexperienced lieutenant. This is how he starts out in the play, and this is why.

English Journal #4

For Cassio, I am going to try to do some things the entire time, and other at only certain times. For the entire duration of my scene, I want to try to use not a full on british accent, but I want to use an accent other than my normal accent. I want to make myself into an actual character, so I want to use a different voice. I also want to not slouch and sit there and do nothing. I am a lieutenant so I will stand straight and stand tall.

I am going to be wielding either small pieces of armor or a dagger.

Our group is going to stand out from the others in terms of level of intensity. There is a very intense fight scene between Roderigo and I, and it will be stunning and captivating throughout. In addition, we are going to own our characters and make sure that the audience can't get enough of us.

English Journal #5

"You rogue! you rascal! A knave teach me my duty! I'll beat the knave into a twiggen bottle!" {Striking Roderigo}. This line (and sequence if you may) is important to the play. Specifically, it is key to the development of Iago's plan to gain revenge on Othello. Before this line, Iago sends Roderigo charging at a drunk Michael Cassio, causing them to get into a very intimate altercation. This is important to the play because with Cassio being the instrument of revenge against Othello, Iago sets Cassio up to be frowned upon by everybody, to be mistrusted. Othello is the one who handpicked Cassio, and by making Cassio look like a fool, he is also making Othello's judgement look very flawed. This is just another piece of the puzzle in Iago's plan. This line is important, and the importance was shown in how I delivered it. I made Cassio extremely intoxicated and extremely aggressive, so that I could make sure he would be frowned upon.

Our group's performance went exactly as we had rehearsed it. I am very proud of how we delivered our lines, stayed in character the entire time, and how structured and prepared our entire scene was. Personally, if I were to do something different, I would choose to have brought in a more obvious prop. I don't think many people saw my fake dagger.

Performing the play helped me understand more in-depth of Iago's individual sections of his plan, and how they came together. Specifically, in my scene, acting it out helped me realize what was going on, the alibis, and motives behind everything. When you experience something first hand, it makes everything much more clear.

Crossing Boundaries by Dylan Long

Ever been judged for doing something you like to do? So has my mom. She used to go see certain types of music that her friends thought was terrible, and they judged her for it. However, not even that was getting in the way of my mom and her love for doing what she loved.

For me, crossing boundaries is one of the major keys to succeeding in life. Whether it be a boundary that is holding you back, a chance you are going to take, or a social norm you are going to defy, good will come from crossing this boundary. However, if it is a boundary that if crossed, directly offends or hurts someone, that is not ok. Boundaries of respect, personal space, identity, are boundaries that are meant to be respected and protected. Crossing a boundary in this way should be in no way tolerable. Overall, crossing boundaries depends on what boundary you are crossing.

I loved doing this interview; I found out a ton of cool stuff about my mom that I never knew before. It was very interesting for me and I really connected with the content; I related to it. It was great to hear my mom's story of overcoming the opinions of others and being a motivator for others to do the same.

What language is to me

Posted by Dylan Long in English 2 - Pahomov on Monday, January 21, 2013 at 3:56 pm
“I’m done my homework, Dad.”

“I’m sorry, what?”

“I said I’m done my homework...”

“What? I’m sorry, I don’t understand.”

“....I’m finished with my homework.” I grumble as I realize he’s only pretending not to

hear me so that I’ll use correct grammar. Let this paint a picture of how I have been taught the English language growing up. My English is proper, which entails correct grammar, not much slang, and a rather advanced vocabulary for a guy my age. Yes, I talk sarcastically improper and use tons of slang when I’m being casual or weird with my friends, but that is on purpose and aside from my actual persona. Growing up, my parents helped me learn proper grammar and what difficult words meant by simply educating me on proper English on a consistent basis as I learned the language. They didn’t stop at having me know how to communicate with words and speak basic English, they felt that since proper English was a part of their identity, that they should raise me with the same characteristic. Aside from how they wanted to raise me, I do agree with them that proper English is a good thing to be educated on.
“Hola negro! What’s up?”
“Chillin doe, you?”
“Herpin’ to the derp.”
If someone heard me talking with my friends, they probably wouldn’t know what to think of it. It’s a weird system that us teenagers have developed, talking with such strange slang. However, that’s honestly what conversation among me and my friends like. I see it as the definition of casual, which is what my general language with friends has evolved into. If for example one of my parents of teachers saw just how casual I can make certain words or topics seem, they’d probably be shocked. For instance, the word ‘negro’. I use it quite casually; I call most of my friends that. Personally, I have adapted to not thinking much of it. However, if somebody finds it offensive, I won’t use it to address them, or use it around them. However, most of my friends see it and it doesn’t affect them at all. It’s become such a casual term, which can sometimes be a bad thing. This is because the word has ties and roots to hatred. When it comes to edgy terms like “negro”, there is honestly such a fine line between okay and not okay. It’s a common occurrence today that words that root from hatred are used casually, and the speaker becomes numb to what they are really saying.

What I have noticed with myself is that I am aware of the history of the words I use, and instead of finding myself numb to what I’m saying, I am aware of what I’m saying, but I treat the word very casually and with no undertone of hate, (which painfully, is still arguable that I have become numb to what I’m saying). However, I do refrain from using words that stem from hatred and are still commonly used to talk down on someone or something. I do not treat these words casually, because they are words that severely damage the identity and emotions of individuals. Through being exposed to all different forms of speaking and slang, I have developed my own boundaries in terms of what is casual speaking and what is offensive.

“Yo, how you been brah?”
“Pretty good bro, you?”
“Chillin man. You tryna go chill today?”
“Yeah bro definitely.”

I have some friends who have very douchey ways of talking, like this for example. In the essay, “If Black English Isn’t A Language, Then Tell Me What Is?” by James Baldwin, he states that “People evolve a language in order to describe and thus control their circumstances or in order not to be submerged by a reality that they cannot articulate. (And if they cannot articulate it, they are submerged.)”. I’ve noticed that people sort of live in their own reality and they create or adapt the language that is appropriate with their world. For example, if there is a guy who really likes to party on the beach and loves longboarding and surfing, he might start using the words “dude”, “bro”, “brah”, “gnarly”, et cetera, because those are the word associated with his environment and activities. Thus, he incorporates those words into his language to help define and control his circumstances.

I have noticed with myself that whenever I am approached by a certain form of speaking, I quickly conform and talk like they talk. I do this because if the speaker hears me speaking how they speak, they will be more open about themselves because they will feel comfortable talking the way they do. I don’t really ever look down on people based on how they speak (unless they’re being extremely offensive.) However, because of all this, I’ve learned that a speaker’s language does not always affect their own identity, but can affect the identities of others. All in all, instead of making fun of someone’s language because I don’t know how to relate to it, I respect people for how they speak. I like when people know they like to talk, and I respect that because I can relate to it myself.

How I speak and my choice of vocabulary has basically always been accepted and not questioned mostly because I speak in Standard English and use proper grammar. Whenever I talk to people in strange yet casual slang, it’s a sign that I like them, because I know that they will embrace it and that I can be extremely casual and down to earth with them. My language means a lot to me and, if I think about it, although it doesn’t represent my views/opinions, the way I talk does represent who I am. My language intersects with my identity.

Green Card

Avocado is sitting there all sad, and a fly comes along and lands next to him.*
Hola, little fly, I’m Bob. Nice to meet you. Ju know, I have a lot on my mind and I’d really appreciate it if you’d hear me out. You will? Gracias, señor. *deep breath, exhale* Well,  It’s been a couple weeks since I first arrived at this Whole Foods, and I mean, things were looking muy bueno. I wasn’t worried about a thing. Let me give you a little background on how I got here, little fly. My life began on an avocado tree not too long ago, maybe a month ago. Things were looking good m’hijo, really good. I had successfully snuck into the transportation box that I had spotted not too far from the avocado tree I dangled from. I felt my little avocado hairs stand on end as I fell from the tree to the box as the box loaded up the truck. All without any harm being done to me! I was on my way to Whole Foods! Hahaha, I couldn’t wait for the driver of the truck to start up his engine and drive me to the promised land. *pauses, sad look slowly developes* Sadly though, from the excitement I passed out unconscious and ended up here. I woke up and.. I looked around... and.. none of it even looked familiar. Yet I suddenly realized just what was happening. I had made it to the Whole Foods! Across the border! Freedom! ¡He escapado, he escapado! I almost let out a shriek but I can’t because there are customers peering into the box I’m chilling in, and I can’t just freak out at a human, you know, ‘cause like.... I’m a fuckin’ avocado! We can’t talk. Instead, my eyes fill with water as I feel the chills overcome my whole body. Freedom. It’s all real. Suddenly, I hear “Mommy? Why is that avocado so ugly? It’s all bruised up and looks like a little green turd.” Still smiling, I looked around at all of the flawless green fresh avocados and thought, “Who could she be talking about?” *pause, smile turns to blank face* I felt my smile slowly fade into a blank expression as I realize, ‘Ay dios mio, back on that stupid truck ride, the impact must have beaten me up a little. And, being beat up just a little is enough for me to become the avocado that nobody wants, the reject. What am I going to do..... ay dios mio... What shall it be like for me, sitting here as the ugly avocado of the group? Shall it be that day after day, people take one look at me and move right on along because they know there’s no way they’d want to give me a chance? Do I not meet the stupid standards of all the great fresh avocados that they sell here? This simply cannot be. It’s just not fair. But, hell mister fly, you’re just a little critter. You’ve got your own problems. Don’t worry about me, amigo. Fly on, litle fly. Fly on.

You and the World Blog Post #3

Posted by Dylan Long in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 12:01 am
This is my third and final blog post. Throughout my first and second posts, I addressed the issue of gay marriage. The goal was to educate both myself and others about the topic. Now, it is time to take a step forward in terms of change.

Many groups have been formed to help educate their communities about the issue, including one in my school (the Gay-Straight Alliance, or GSA for short).

Community members have written letters to their governors to educate the governors on why they should legalize gay marriage.

Recently, the daughter of Raul Castro (Mariela Castro, a sexologist) helped organize a gay rights march, and Raul Castro openly supported the march.

I have chosen to bring awareness to the topic of homosexuality in general by giving out 5” by 4” stickers with a design titled “I support gay rights.”

This design will be placed onto a 5” by 4” rectangular sticker and given out to students in SLA.

My dad has been working in the printing business for more than twenty years, and has helped me out with school projects in the past.

I made the design for the sticker and sent it to my dad. He printed 100 stickers with that design on it, and I handed them out to students at my school.

Prior to handing them out, I had very high expectations about how the students would run with the idea and the materials.

The students put them on many of their belongings, like their laptop cases, backpacks, even books and binders.

I think the stickers were a great success. So do other people. I talked to some of my friends about the idea of having the “I support gay rights” sticker, and here is one of my friends said about the idea:

“I think the stickers were a great idea. Publicly displaying your support for gay rights could help relieve a gay person of their stress, because they know that someone supports them.” - Ray Albarouki, SLA 9th Grader.

To conclude my blog, I would like to thank my english teacher, Ms. Dunn, for helping me out tons with my blog posts, our student assistant teacher Emma Hersh for giving me lots of great advice to enhance my blogs, and my dad for helping me print out my stickers.

I’d also like to thank you the readers for taking the time to educate yourself with the research that I have uncovered. Thank you so much. To see where I got all of my research, my bibliography is here. All three blog posts are included in the bibliography.

Throughout my first blog post, I addressed the issue of gay marriage. This blog will go further in depth on the new research conducted.

Many different factors play roles in the debate over gay marriage, such as religion, beliefs, the Government, pride.

Some religions view homosexuality as a sin. Some go so far as to protest the funerals of gays with signs that read, “God Hates Fags”.

On political terms, recently Vice President Joe Biden came out in strong favor of gay marriage.

President Obama soon also came out in favor, stating that his view on gay marriage has been evolving.

Reports say that Biden apologized to Obama for the timing of his statements.

Now that I have talked about political and religious standpoints, let’s talk social standpoints.

I created a Google Forum asking four questions; two were multiple choice, and two were text response questions.

A total of 60 legitimate responses were given over a two day span. Here are the results:

As shown above, the mass majority of those who participated in the survey are those who are in favor of gay marriage and homosexuality in general.

Of those who took the survey, the majority of them are teenagers. The majority of the teenagers in today's society favor homosexuality and unions between gay couples.

A survey on homosexuality from an online quiz website shows that the majority of those who took the survey favor gay marriage, and are teenagers.

As shown in the screenshot above, over 80% of the participants in the
survey favor gay marriage.

As shown in the screenshot above, 54% of the participants are ages 14-16, and 23% are ages 11-13.

The information and data presented thus far has a great effect on someone’s opinion on the topic, and this has happened with me.

As I said in my first blog post, I fully support gay rights, gay marriage, and all forms of unions between same sex couples, because I think every human being should be able to be happy without other people's beliefs getting in the way.

As I delved deeper into the topic of gay marriage and gay rights, I noticed that the debate over whether to legalize gay marriage is very similar to the debate over whether to legalize rights Civil Rights.

Both topics have similarities:

  • When Civil Rights among African Americans were finally acknowledged and respected, it had a huge impact on America, both positive and negative. It is better known for its positive impact. Gay marriage is argued to have a huge negative impact on America, but many believe gay marriage being legalized we would become an overall more accepting country.

  • America became more of an accepting country once Civil Rights were legalized. Gay marriage being legalized would likely result in the same.

  • I believe that the worst things that would come from the legalization of gay marriage are merely some tax increases and tension. This is similar to what happened when Civil Rights were legalized.

  • Both issues violate our human rights.

The religious aspect of hatred among homosexuals confuses me. Sure, someone has the right to have an opinion, but why must that opinion interfere with those being judged?

Yes, those who believe in that are entitled to their beliefs, but should they have say in the beliefs and decisions of those who think and feel differently?

The answer is no. To elaborate, here’s a quote I found on the internet.

“Claiming that someone else’s marriage is against your religion is like being angry at someone for eating a donut because you’re on a diet.” - Anonymous

Thank you so much for reading. Feel free to take a look at where I got all of my information for the first blog post and this one here.

Stay tuned for my third and final blog post, this time on how we can start to make a change. Thanks!

She’s so hard - The JezabelsEsta escena es con Minerva, y la familia.

Por ejemplo: “And I wouldn't be imprisoned wherever you take me”.

You and the World Blog Post #1

Posted by Dylan Long in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 10:21 pm
My name is Dylan Long and I am part of the freshman English class at Science Leadership Academy.

For our final quarter project, we were designated to choose a world issue, develop a passion for researching and gathering information about said issue, convey that knowledge to others, and seek to educate ourselves and others about said issue.

For my project, I chose the world issue of gay marriage. Gay marriage is a very biased and argued topic. It is rejected by the majority of society.

It is such a heated and discussed topic because religion and politics play an enormous role in the issue. Many religions find homosexuality to be a sin, and do not accept it by any means.

Others who do not see being gay as something bad (whether they are religious or not) believe that every human being deserves to be happy, and that love is love, no matter the gender.

I fully support gay marriage because I believe every human deserves to be able to pursue happiness and experience love, regardless of gender.

A more close and dear reason for my support of homosexuality is that one of my closest family friends, George (who was my little sister’s Godfather) who was openly gay and in a relationship with another man. George passed away from cancer.

When George passed, his partner, Chris, was devastated, as were my entire family and I. When George died, I took it upon myself as my duty to fully and openly support all forms of relationships between same sex couples.

The main issue I am researching is gay marriage in the United States. The majority of the states in the U.S. do not approve of gay marriage. Only 8 of 50 states have legalized gay marriage, while 30 states have constitutional amendments banning gay marriage.

There have been amendments that have been presented in recent years that were aimed directly towards eradicating gay marriage once and for all in the United States.

The Marriage Protection Amendment was an amendment that if it had passed, would have confined unions of any type (including marriage), only if said unions were comprised of one man and one woman.

Very recently, North Carolina passed an amendment to their state constitution that will enforce that "Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State."

Since marriage is already banned in North Carolina, this amendment bans literally all forms of relationships between same-sex couples. It is evident that the majority of America opposes gay marriage.

The support for gay marriage among major political figures has been strongly among democrats.

The two presidents who have openly supported gay marriage (Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton) were both democrats, as are 13 of 14 current governors that support gay
marriage.

However very recently the current president, Barack Obama, made a very bold move and came out in favor of same-sex marriage.

Obama’s bold statements have sparked an international discussion over same-sex marriage.

His excuses for not initially coming out in favor of gay marriage are: he believed that a civil union would suffice, also if he came out in favor of it he would get too much criticism, considering homosexuality is disapproved of so harshly in the U.S.

Those who view gay marriage as something wrong or a sin are retaliating with reiterating their belief that marriage should only be between one man and one woman.

Those who have the more humane approach to the situation are favoring his decision to come out in favor, saying it is a great move forward in the fight for same-sex marriage.

In addition to the newly passed amendment in North Carolina, Obama’s statements have pushed the debate over gay marriage into a full forced discussion, as it has exploded all over the news media.

On May 10, 2012, gay marriage was the topic of the front page article on CNN’s website, in addition to a side section titled “Same-Sex Marriage”, offering many other links to the international discussion that has now unfolded, as seen here:

(Front page of CNN showing the links of stories being reported over gay marriage)

Thus far, I am questioning the legitimacy of the cons of gay marriage. The majority of the research is either debatable, biased, or false.

As my research progresses throughout the project, I wish to learn more about the theories of how gay marriage would negatively impact the United States. I wish to learn more about this because I am very skeptical towards gay marriage having a harsh impact on the U.S.

Negative Space Drawings

Posted by Dylan Long in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 10:35 pm
What is negative space?
Negative space is the empty space that is around and inside the drawing, it is whatever the drawing isn't.
Explain how you find the negative space in your cut out and your stool drawing.
First, the entire shape has to be drawn. From there, you shade in all of the empty space that the shape does not cover. Everything you shade in is the negative space.
Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings?
I think it does, because it is a simple concept yet it allows the drawing to be seen in a completely different way, and it looks really cool.
Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It helps the artist because it lets the artist see the entire drawing as a whole, including the space that is not being used. It could inspire unique ideas to alter the negative space, and gives the artist a different perspective that could give the artist a whole different view on future projects.

El Secreto de la Cabra por Dylan Long

Posted by Dylan Long in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 1:57 pm
PARTE 1

Dylan Long Correos Electronicos

Posted by Dylan Long in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 8:54 pm

Querido Oficial Pedro,

Me llamo Aurora. “¡Pare ahora mismo! ¡Deja te maltratar a mi hijo!

Posted by Dylan Long in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 11:17 am

Posted by Dylan Long in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 11:13 am

Posted by Dylan Long in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 11:48 am

Me llamo Father McEnroe.

Posted by Dylan Long in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 10:44 pm

Posted by Dylan Long in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 10:01 am
2. Que entienden la importancia de la educación.
3. Que la comunidad admira a Malcolm X.
2 frases o imagenes encontrados en el mural:
1."Education is a passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today." - Malcolm X.

Mar Adentro

Posted by Dylan Long in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 12:57 pm
MAR ADENTRO
Nombre: Dylan Long
You have been commissioned to write a review for El País about Alejandro Amenábar’s movie “Mar Adentro.” Your piece has four pa==rts:
I) A synopsis
II) A presentation of the questions raised in the movie.
III) A presentation of your position on those issues
IV) Your opinion of the movie
Use your Mar Adentro and ¿Quién va a sobrevivir? vocabulary to present and defend your position on the polemic issues raised in the movie.

I made the changes (which were taking out all the extra images and effects on those images) because of the feedback Ms Hull gave me. Those images were not needed and were distracting.

Tech Script

In this slide, I used what I learned from the articles provided by Ms Hull. I learned to keep it simple, don’t use anything that is distracting the audience from the topic, and get the point across rather quickly. I think I did a pretty good job with using that knowledge and applying to my slide. I posted my name, lots of pictures of things that describe me and that I do, and my favorite quote.

¡Ay ay ay! ¡Susana era infiel con Pedro!

Posted by Dylan Long in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 11:37 am

La Abeja: Dylan Long

Posted by Dylan Long in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 11:20 am
The project that was our Spanish 4 benchmark was making a mask out of paper maché, writing an essay, and putting the essay onto the mask. The purpose was to learn more spanish, and learn about the lives of others, in an interactive and fun way. The essay consisted of 2 parts. The things that are obvious about us, and the things that are not so obvious. For my culture, masks are not all that important or symbolic. But in other societies and religions, they are a necessity.
Aqui es mi ensayo, los dos partes:

Dylan:

Ella me influye mi vida muchísimo.

Yo pregunté a mi mama, “Es ella mi hermanita?”

No podía creerlo!
