For my senior project, I created an online resource for high school students who are dealing with stress. Initially, I had planned to give back to the SLA community in a physical way but my senior year was cut short so I had to adjust and adapt. Living in the age of technology I decided that the best way that I could create a long-lasting resource for high school students would be to create an Instagram page. The Instagram page is filled with information about managing stress. While completing this project I’ve learned new techniques to manage my stress. Also, I’ve learned that I am more connected to my school community than I once believed. After talking to my peers I learned that we were stressing and struggling about similar things. Knowing that the people around me were stressing about similar things made it somewhat more comforting and welcoming, hence the handle name @stressintogether_

How Violence Affects Children

Posted by Cianni Mack in English 3 · Block/Harmon · B Band on Sunday, May 12, 2019 at 2:15 pm
This essay is about how violence affects children and how adults can help create solutions. I would like you to notice my solutions because they are very simple but effective to traumatic experiences.

Violence does more damage to a community than what people realize. Children being exposed to violence at a young age can affect them in their journey of life physically and emotionally.  Any type of violence can result in an aftermath that will last a lifetime. Places where violence is something that happens very often have a higher effect on the children that live there. When someone is exposed to something all the time it becomes a norm to them. The children who are exposed to violence regularly become accustomed to going through traumatic experiences. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an result for some kids that see violence regularly. Dealing with violence is a lot for anyone but children specifically need a support team that will give them the help they need to move forward with their lives.

“Dr. Spivack found that children who live in inner cities experience higher rates of PTSD than do combat veterans, due in large part to the fact that the majority of kids living in inner-city neighborhoods are routinely exposed to violence.” Children who live in the city should not have higher rates than people who fought in actually wars. Being a child you should not be exposed to violence regularly. A routine of violence will start to make children believe that violence is ok.  Also it will make them believe that violence is an solution to problems which it is not. Children repeat behaviors that they see. So all the unhealthy behaviors that they see in their environments will eventually be apart of their behaviors. It is very true that people are a product of their environment. If a child's environment is constantly filled with violence then what do you expect a child contribute to their community. Feeding children garbage such as violence in their most impressionable years will end up hurting society because children are what you shape them to be. So if society feeds the children good things like healthy problem solving skills and love then the future will be totally different.

As a child finding the most healthiest way to express how you feel isn't the easiest. Not only because you don't know but because you are still a child and learning how to deal with so many other things in your life like growing up in general. You are still figuring things out and finding out who you are. But for most children you also have to figure out how to survive in places that meaningless violence happens on a regular. This is where mentors and good examples for kids come in.  helping kids with traumatic experiences would make lots of kids feel better. “Kids know what happened. Keeping it a ‘secret’ or making up a story about it may only add confusion and mistrust. Kids may fear talking about it because it is a “secret or forbidden topic.” To create healthy dialogues, we can invite children to ask adults any questions they might have about what happened or about themselves and their loved ones ( Azmaria Maker,Ph.D).”  When violence happens people think letting it go unspoken is better than talking about it will be better because then the children won't cry. But in reality talking about traumatic experiences will relieve children and won't leave any unanswered questions or thoughts about things that happen in society. Having an open dialogue about the things that happen will let kids know that the way  they feel towards situation are okay and help them eventually move on and be the best version of themselves that they can be.

Advanced Essay #2: Identity and Belonging

Posted by Cianni Mack in English 3 · Block/Harmon · B Band on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 11:47 am
Introduction:
The purpose of my essay is to explore the ideas of identity and belonging and why it matter so much to people. In this essay I am most proud of the way I used different sources and still could relate it to my topic. Something I would like to really improve on is flushing my ideas out in a way that does not sound repetitive.

A journey that everyone goes through is figuring out who they are or in other words figuring out their identity. Identity is made up of many different things like experiences , people around you, and social medias. Identity is a combination of many things. And it’s not just made up in one day.  There is inputs by different people about who you should be and what you are meant to be , but the most important thing is being your true self.

As stated by Bonnie Tsui in the article “Choose Your Own Identity”  I hate to admit it, what they choose to be won’t necessarily have to do with me. Because my sons are going to be the ones who say who — not what — they are.” The idea Tsui brings to the attention of people is that the identity of other people is not something that you can decide , even if that person is someone that you really care about. In many different families people disguise them creating someone else's identity as wanting the best for them. Wanting the best for someone you care about is a normal thing, but what is not normal is creating an identity for them is something that is detrimental in the long run. Figuring out who your own identity is a form of being your best self and staying true to who you are and not who people want you to be. Family can have an huge influence on what you want to be put it should never be what your family wants you to be over what you want to be.

As you get older you feel more obliged to figuring out your identity. A major process that you figuring out parts of your identity is the college process. Eleventh grade is where things really start the process. A distinctive memory I have is going to my first college fair. The college fair was after school so I made my friends get tickets with me. As we get to the fair before we walk in we see a lot of kids. Instantly stunned because I didn’t imagine all these kids my age wanting to go to college. Moving through the crowd trying to stay connected to my friends who are somehow more concerned about who is at the college fair and not the actual colleges that are there. The lines To talk to the colleges were so long, but we figured it we just wait the line would go faster. Being in line all I hear are other students being excited about getting on cite acceptances. I never did anything like this without my mom, so I wasn't sure how things like this work. When it was my turn at the Hampton table the first thing the representative asks is if you know what you want to major in. My usual answer when my family ask me is “something with math” , but I knew I had to be more specific. When the man asked what I wanted to major in the first thing that shot out my mouth was business and financing. I always think about what I actually want to major in but there is so many options I get really overwhelmed. So many different options make me feel like it very easy to choose the wrong one. Never in my life have I been pressured to decide what I wanted to be and now that it was happening so quickly it feels as though my timer is running out.

Like stated, identity is not something that could be made up overnight. In a big world where you can be anything and anyone it’s overwhelming. As said by Hush Puppy, the main character of “The Beast of the Southern Wild”, “When you're a small piece of a big puzzle, you gotta fix what you can.” The world is a big place and finding where you belong is a huge journey. The journey of finding where you belong can be very long because there are so many different places you may think you should belong but actually don't. Belonging is when you can be your true and honest self, while feeling comfortable. Though you may think that you belong in one place your true ambitions may tell you that you belong somewhere else. Your identity and belonging go hand and hand. Your identity directs you to where you belong. You decide where you belong by finding things that you most relate to or categorize yourself  under because it makes you feel like you have a place. Having a place to belong is what people yearn for. Even if that means belonging to a certain social class, college, or culture. In a sense having so many different things that you belong to or identify to keeps things in order. People are afraid of being lost and not knowing things. For instance when someone gets lost there is a quick panic because they don't know where they are going and don't know how they will find their next destination. Luckily when someone gets lost on the road they have the gps to help them find the way, but there is no life gps that can tell you how to get to your next life destination. Early on in life the responsibility of figuring out what you want to do as a career, or what you identify as is placed so that when you get older you have a sense of where you are going.

The bigger idea to this is that no matter what you choose to identify as or belong to it should be the most honest things about you. Pretending to be something you are not just for the satisfaction of your loved one will make you a miserable person inside. Life is about living your best life to the fullest extent and the people who lo9ve you should love you for who you are and not for what they want you to be. People can not live your life for you so they should not dictate whom you have to be. A big issue that people struggle with is impressing the people around them to seem as though they have everything under control but the hard truth of everything is at one point of time nobody has everything figured out and there is no rush on your story because it only belongs to you. You and only you should be the main character of your story and everyone else should be supporting characters.

Advanced Essay #1: When Life Happens

Posted by Cianni Mack in English 3 · Block/Harmon · B Band on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at 9:32 pm
The goals I set for this essay was to try and dig for deeper life lessons than the surface lessons that were obvious. Secondly I wanted both of my memories to happen recently so I could be as vivid as I could with the memories. By the memories being so recent to my life I could remember sensory details and be completely honest rather than having to piece together old things that I didn't really remember. Ultimately I am very proud of my bigger picture because I think that its something that people don't really acknowledge and end up feeling lost when life does happen.

When Life Happens

As I was staring out the window, I could see the streets flooding with brown water. The water had become brown from the runoff from a construction sight from a few miles behind. It was pouring. I felt the train slowing down since the last stop and then it came to a complete stop in a heavily wooded area. A few seconds later, the loud speaker came on and the conductor said, “Folks, we can no longer move forward due to flooding on the tracks.” I had already been on this train for three hours going on four. After the announcement went off, all the passengers who had to sit in the cafe car just like me, could feel the annoyance level skyrocket. Nobody knew how long we would be waiting but all I knew was that I was going to get all my homework done.

This was the first time I had been a situation like this by myself. I am usually with someone else but there was no one I knew that was on the train with me. It was a major experience where I had to be responsible of my safety and be able to stay calm. Being responsible meant that I had to keep my parents updated with the status of my train and staying aware of my surroundings. Although I was slightly worried that I was going to have to sleep on the train, I remained calm.

Early that week I had another life experience that I clearly remember going like this. “Ding, ding, ding, dIng,” is what you could hear Ms. Diane saying over the loudspeaker. This was the fire drill my physics teacher had informed us on minutes before. I grabbed my phone and proceeded to the hallway as other classes flooded the same direction as me. Although I was warned and was told that we were going to have the drill, I was still caught off guard. It was just one of those things you can never really prepare for in your mind. Once we got to the end of the hallway, we made a left turn to a side stairway that was steep. It was dark and cool as we walked down the steps but as we got closer to the bottom, I could see how bright it was outside. When I got to the bottom of the steps, I could feel the sun on my face and instantly knew that this fire drill was going to be miserable.

Fire drills may not seem like something big, but it's always a good example of being prepared just in case life happens. I am not sure how I will act if there was actually a fire but what I can say is the I know the plan to get out safely. I have been doing fire drills since I started school and I never really took the time to think about why they were so important. Now being the young adult that I am, it is just another way of schools preparing us for life.

Being put into situations like being caught in a storm and having the fire drill were two totally different experiences but very relatable. Both of these experiences taught me to be prepared for the anything, even for the worse. Thinking back to when I was stuck on the train, I remember my mom kept texting me about if my phone was dying. Just imagining what it would have been like if my phone had died would’ve been terrible. I would not have had a way to contact any of my family to tell them that I was stuck. Everyone would have be worried about why I was not answering the phone and if something had happened to me. Although nothing went wrong during the fire drill, it still helps me stay prepared for the worse. If there ever was a fire in school, I would know the safest route to get out. My teacher made it very clear about which way to go and even where to go after I got outside.

The bigger picture to both of these memories is that if I stay ready, I won’t have to get ready. In life, you never know what is going to happen next and sometimes things can happen and change your life forever. Although we all like to believe that we have total control over our lives, sometimes life happens. You can't control what things happen but you can control how you react and deal with things. For instance, when I was stuck on the train, I couldn't control the water flooding but I could control how I reacted and how I was going to deal with the situation. It's important to make the best decision possible when things come up because they might have long term effects.

How Demonic Figures Affect Behaviors

Posted by Cianni Mack in English 2 · Pahomov · C Band on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 2:58 pm

In younger children it is very common for beastly things such as monsters to influence their behaviors. As a child being afraid of monsters could drive them to be afraid of their own room or having to sleep with their parents. But what happens when adults believe in certain monsters? Adults aren’t afraid of the same type of monsters as children, instead they’re afraid of demonic figures that they have been exposed to through their own personal beliefs. In both children and adults beastly figures can make them act a certain way. How do figures like a beast or Satan effect how people live their lives and their actions? People who believe in demonic figures are afraid of them because they see them as the embodiment of evil. As a result, they are cautions about their interactions with those figures.

In William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” a group of choir boys get stuck on a island with no adults. While being on the island they have to learn how to survive and live without the things they once had when they were not stranded. On the island there are a range of ages. The boys always calm that there is a beast on the island. But the leader Ralph does not really believe. Eric and Sam are twins on the island who admit that they have seen the beast. At a meeting called on the meeting they explained their interactions and said “‘We ran as fast as we could’--’Bashed into things’--’The beast followed us’--’I saw it slinking behind the trees’--’’(101). Eric and Sam were so frightened of the thought of coming in contact with the beast they recklessly ran away. The boy were so afraid of what would have happened if the beast caught them. This scene from the book is a prime example of how people are cautious of interaction with the things that they are afraid of. If the boys were not afraid of the beast they would not have ran away or even brought up the event at the meeting.

In the novel Ralph, the leader is somewhat in disbelieve that there is actually a beast on the island. Being the leader he feels like he has to prove to the rest of the boys on the island that do believe that there is a beast that it is nothing. Although he doesn't believe that there is a beast on the island entirely he still has his doubts. He is thinking to himself as him and a couple other boy decide to go looking for the beast he says “If there was no beast ---in this case, well and good; but if there was something waiting on the top of the mountain --what was the use of three of them, handicapped by the darkness and carrying only sticks”(120). It is obvious that Ralph is very unsure if there is actually a beast but he is still tentative about what will happen if they do see the beast. In this scene it proves that in some circumstances even when people don't believe in the beastly figures they still worry about how the interaction will go.

In the real world everyone has different beliefs. There are many different religions that have different beliefs about how the world is and what type of things are in the world. The devil/satan is someone Christians believe in. Christians are taught not to sin. Sinning would result in not being accepted into Heaven and result in going to Hell. Hell is where the devil resides and a figure that no one should want to come into contact with. In Christians belief they are taught that the Devil is evil is bad. Christians are mindful of how they act and treat others so they can get accepted into Heaven and will not have to face the Devil in Hell. Christianity is one of the three major religions in the world. So there are many people try to stay away from sinning and activities that will keep them from getting into Heaven. Acknowledging the fact that Christians all over the world believe that the devil is somebody that they should avoid, proves that people everywhere are cautious about interactions with figures that they are scared of.

The Kukeri Festival happens in Pernik Bulgaria. The festival happens January 27- 28. At this festival people dress up in costumes and go through the streets of Pernik. The purpose of this festival is to perform rituals that will keep the evil spirits and demons away. Bulgarians do rituals at Kukeri to avoid having to deal with evil spirits that they are afraid of. Unlike in the novel Bulgarians do not run away from the evil figures they take part in different rituals to make sure that the figures they fear do not come into their safe places they call home. Although this happens in the real world it stills demonstrates how people are cautious of their actions and behaviors when it is in connection with a demonic figure or in this case evil spirits. Everyone reacts differently when they are dealing with frightening things.  The costumes they dress in during the festival protect who they really are from the evil spirits. The costumes protect them from the evil spirits and keeps who they are secret.

The novel “Lord of the Flies” just shows some cases when people are cautious about their behaviors. The novel demonstrates how younger children react to when they are afraid. But it doesn’t just affect children it affects all people old and young. Looking closer to why people act the way they do. This is another explanation to why certain behaviors come up. The way figures are viewed or come off will play a huge role on how people react to them.  Also the situation that people are in. In the novel the boys were stuck on the island so their imagination ran wild. But in other cases like mentioned in previous paragraphs it could simply be how people are raised. If people believe certain figures are evil they will be cautious and mindful of their actions and behaviors.

Film Review

Posted by Cianni Mack in Intersectional Feminism · Menasion · e1 Band on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 1:58 pm

The rationale behind the Bechdel Test and the Mako Mori test is to regulate the movies that are coming out. They are checking that movies aren’t misrepresenting certain groups in films. When movies don't meet pass test like the Mako Mori test and the Bechdel Test that shows there might not be that much diversity in films. Even if a film does not meet the Bechdel or the Mako Mori test that doesn't mean that the movie is not good. The Bechdel test is a checklist for movies the requirements are: it has to have at least two women in it. The women have to talk to each other. And lastly when they talk to each other it has to be about something other than a man.

The disney movie Frozen meets the Bechdel test. The movie Frozen is about two sisters who after losing their parents have step up to the responsibilities of running a kingdom. The older sister Elsa has had special powers all her life which makes her distance herself from her younger sister Ana. Ana doesn’t fully understand why her sister is so distant and all she really wants is to have a sister relationship with Elsa that they had when they were younger. In the movie Ana and Elsa are the main characters which meets rules number one of the Bechdel test. The sisters talk to each other in the movie about how different things are going to now that they are in control of the kingdom that’s meets the requirement of talking to each other and having a conversation about something other than a man.

My test is called the Pretty Woman test. The three requirements are that there is a woman who has a job that is not socially acceptable but still gets respected. Secondly, the man must be able to have conversations other than work. Lastly the woman has to have a friend that helps her stay connected to reality. The movie Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere meets this test. In the movie Julia plays a hooker who falls in love with the success businessman, Richard Gere after leaving a business party in Los Angeles.  The first requirement of the Pretty Woman test is that there is a woman has a job that is not socially acceptable. Julia Roberts plays a hooker, in society people who are prostitutes/hookers are disrespected and look down on. After they both take a liking in each other Richard Gere offers to give her better life. This conversation meets the second rule that talks about something other than work. Julia has a friend who she works with that visits her while she stays with Richard. Her friend reminds her of her life before she met Richard and how things will be after he leaves. The third requirement is that there is a friend that connects her to her real life.

Rules

Posted by Cianni Mack in English 2 · Pahomov · C Band on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 6:28 pm

I don't even know why I'm getting in trouble. How is my outfit inappropriate. Because the rule says no rips allowed? Or because you can see my shoulders? No disrespect but that rule is stupid. I mean like why does it even matter if my jeans has rips in them or not. And if my shirt is off my shoulder. Last time I checked this was highschool with people all older than 14. I don't understand how a shoulder and a knee gets me sent to the principal's office. Anybody who is 14 years or older should be able to control themselves if they see a shoulder or knee right? So you are making me miss the whole school day because of my outfit. I don't understand who I'm hurting by my knees and shoulder being out. Can I call my mom? I need her to hear the reason why I'm getting sent home by you. Unwanted attention? As a young female in today's world I get unwanted attention for everything I do. You have no idea what it feels like to have clothes that you want to wear but don't feel comfortable in them because other people will stare. Or because people don't wear the same things as you , you aren't accepted. We live in a place where girls are told what to wear and how to wear it and if there is too much showing they are called out of their name, or are viewed as less than.  Why should I be defined by the clothes I wear. If I like something I should be able to wear it right? Just because I wear my legs out doesn't make me less of a person right? I go to school, get good grades, help around my house, don't cause trouble and still somehow things don't seem to work in my favor. Yes I’ve read the rule book so maybe it is my fault. If I didn't want the attention I should cover up. You’re right. I understand what I did was wrong and I understand that sending me home is what you have to do.

I know what type of world I live in so I should just learn how to deal with it so I can be accepted. Being accepted is all I really want out of life. I don't want to be looked at as the weird girl or the outcast anymore. If I follow the rules and the norms of society I will be accepted. Even though the norms aren't me I still want to be accepted so I'm going to do all that I can. Maybe instead of adjusting myself to the norms, I can change the norms. In schools teach the students to stop judging people before they know them. And that it is okay not to be accepted by people who don't matter. As a school principal I think teaching your students that they should feel comfortable to wear their skin out if they want to is vital to preparing them for the world. I get sent to school to learn things that I am going to need in the real world. Am I wrong to think that self confidence is something that I will need in the real world? In school you teach us math, reading, science and history but what about self-care?

My Four Brothers and I

Posted by Cianni Mack in English 2 · Pahomov · C Band on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 10:29 am

My parents split when I was younger. I was my fathers only child, now I have four brothers, three younger brothers  on my dad's side, and one older brother on my mom's side. Growing up being the only girl was always fun and helped me become stronger. Technically, all my siblings are my half brothers but I consider them my brothers.

In fifth grade my favorite project that I had to do was make a collage of the things that were important to me. On my project I had pictures of things like my phone, my clothes, my friends and my family. When the project was due we had to present to the class what was on our board and why. Presenting was really easy  because I knew why I put everything on the board, the part that felt funny was when people came up to me and asked questions and pointed. I got asked the same question at least 5 times by different people. Most people asked me are they really your brothers which I found interesting because I thought I made it pretty clear that they were my brothers when I presented. I got specific questions about every single brother. My older brother Samad has green eyes and sandy brown hair, so everyone assumed he had albinism. Samad looks nothing like me and I heard that forever but it wasn't something I really cared about.

After my classmates wrapped their fifth grade minds around the fact that Samad did not have to look anything like me to be related, they questioned my first little brother. It seemed as if they totally forgot the previous twenty minutes before because it was exactly the same discussion except they thought they had a solid reason on why we could not be related. Tristen was my first little brother we shared a dad. People questioned me because they assumed Tristen was white. Back in fifth grade having to explain to my friends that Tristen’s mom was white and our dad is black seemed like too much to do but, as I got older it became something like an uniform when I spoke on all of my brothers. I distinctly remember many of my peers saying “That can't be your brother he’s white.” When people said that to me it made me question what him being white had anything to do with being related to me. How could someone who had not even knew where I was from tell me who I couldn't be related to because of their skin color.

Now that fifth grade had come and gone I can look back on the project and reflect. Ignorance is what was shown but solely because they didn't know any better. For a while I didn't want to share with people my family because I felt as though answering questions about why me and my brothers didn't look alike was not something I wanted to do. As much as I love my brothers I knew people were not going to accept my family. Being older and learning new life lessons I now understand that what people think of my family doesn't matter as long as my family and I love each other that the most important thing I must remember. Even today when I tell people they have this big idea that your family members are supposed to look like you or have to have the same race as you. Family can come in all shapes, sizes, and colors so why try to categorize or make a uniform on what a family is supposed be like or look like. Race is something made up by people to separate everyone, but I know skin color will not separate my family it will bring us closer.

Iodine Print

Posted by Cianni Mack in Art - Freshman · Hull · d2 Band on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 10:18 pm
My element was Iodine, element number 53. Bernard Courtois was trying to extract potassium chloride from seaweed. Then he added sulfuric acid to result in a purple vapor. That's where the name iodine comes from. The origin of it's name is from the greek word iodes. Iodes means violet. Iodine is a necessity in your body. Some things it is used in is medicine, photography and used in table salt. For my print I did a salt shaker. I decided to go with the salt shaker because iodine is put in table salt to prevent thyroid disease. The first step was to make a the design. Secondly I had to trace it onto wax paper then foam. When tracing it on the foam I had to make it backwards so that when I printed it , it would come out the right way. The last step is putting paint on it and putting onto white paper. If I were to do this project over I would trace it onto the foam better because I had issue with everything coming out the way I wanted it to. Overall my favorite part was painting the foam because my favorite thing to do in art is paint.

Helping Minors Stay Home

This is me putting a flyer in the third floor girls bathroom
This is me putting a flyer in the third floor girls bathroom

Hello again. In my first post I discussed how my topic changed from the dc girls crisis into minors running away.  In my second post I discussed my original research. I conducted my original research by putting out a survey about what people knew about running away. In this post I will be sharing my third part of my project and my agent of change.

Continuing my research about minors running away I found some organizations that try to help. Basically what they do is, they run a 24 hour service where teenages can reach them via text , call or email to express their thoughts. This is a good way  to help the problem because it's not a lot of other options someone could do to prevent minors from running away and putting themselves in danger. Youthline is a great organization for not only minors that are running away but other things issues too. Adults and teenagers will answer on the Youthline. I think that is great because sometimes teenagers want to talk to other teenagers because they don't fully trust adults.

For my agent of change I decided to make posters with the numbers to contact runaways hotlines. Before I came up with that idea I didn't know how I was going to reach teens without overwhelming them with facts. By talking to my peers I came up with the idea to make posters. The first obstacle of making posters was that they could not be boring they would have to draw somebodys attention. Secondly I had to decide what information I was going to put on the posters to help. Lastly where I was going to put them up. On the posters I put two numbers on the posters, National Runaway Safeline and Youthline. I was effective in making a change because by me posting the posters teenagers that might be considering running away will see them and call the number.

When my teacher introduced this project I was excited because I got to choose something that was important to me. Also I really liked the fact that we would be doing the project on or own without having to meet a lot of deadlines. I've not only learned a lot about my topic but myself over the course of this project. Something I've learned about myself is that I enjoy helping others. My whole project was to prevent people from putting themselves in danger. Discovering this about myself could be the first step to figuring out what job I want to be when I get older. Doing this project I've listened to my peers and what was important to them. Seeing the topics my peers chose showed me that everyone was different and has been through different experiences. Overall I feel as though it brought my whole english class together. And  was a great miniature version of the 12th grade capstone that I will have to do in the future.

In the previous weeks we were assigned to learn about negative and positive space. To learn more about negative and positive space in a drawing I had to research and do other drawings identifying the negative and positive space. Leading up to a final assignment where we had to make a rubber stamp that represented ourselves.
For my stamp I designed an asymmetrical crown made by different components. When brainstorming some words that described myself I came up with versatile, calm and urban. This actually was my second design that I had came up with. I feel as though this stamp is a combination of the everything I am.
Negative and positive space is important because it's in almost im every picture and every good artist should know how to identify which one is which. When first learning about negative and positive space it is difficult to separate the difference between them but after a couple articles it is easy to decide which one is negative or positive. Along the way I learned that positive and negative space is something I knew about since I was younger I just never knew what its actual name was. Also positive and negative is in almost every piece of artwork that you see

More about Minors Running Away

Posted by Cianni Mack in English 1 · Giknis · A Band on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 1:04 am

In my previous blog post about Minors running away. My initial research started off being about the missing DC crisis, but plans changed so my new revised topic is teenagers running away from home . Ive researched more things having to do with minors running away.

In the previous post about running away something that was mentioned was that running away is illegal. Some things that could happen if a minor runs away and gets caught, is the minor could go to a juvenile detention center, be placed in a shelter or group home, or be taken back by a police officer. To further my knowledge and understand what people my age thought about running away I created a survey. The survey consisted of seven questions. The responses to the survey came from people who are considered minors. The point of the survey was to see what the youth know about running away. Something that was surprising about the results was that more than half of  the people who took my survey did not know that running away is illegal Screenshot 2017-05-18 at 9.21.17 PM.png

My original research taught me a lot about my peers. Another questions that was on the survey was if the person has ever thought about running away. The results were shocking. Most people who answered the question responded that they have thought about running. This was very appalling because based off the people who took the survey I would expect that to be majority of the answers. The follow up question was what was the reason behind running  away.  The most popular answer was family problems. Overall my results showed me that you should never assume what happens in somebody's house hold or behind closed doors.Screenshot 2017-05-18 at 9.45.12 PM.png

Screenshot 2017-05-18 at 10.14.44 PM.pngThe survey results gave me a better understanding of what people knew and thought about running. It let me know that not many teenagers know a lot about the issue and it's affects a lot of teenagers. Most people don't realize that running away is a big issue. In the beginning of this project, before I started researching anything about this topic , I didn't know if it was organizations that helped teens thinking about running away. There are organizations that help teens before they run away. What the organizations do is basically talk to teens and tell them that they are are other solutions to whatever problems that are happening. Two major organizations that help are Safe Place and National Runaway Safeline . Safe Place is a nation wide organization that helps teens who don't feel safe and need help immediately. The National Runaway Safeline is a prevention line. They have four ways to connect with a 24 hour member who is trained to help. When I started off doing this topic I didn't know how much it affected others. Now learning about it , it makes me feel like more people should know about it
especially parents or guardians should know the signs of when something is wrong. The next part of the You and The World project is the agent of change. For my agent of change I am thinking about two different things. The first idea that I thought of is doing a presentation on the statistics of running away and presenting to my peers to raise awareness. My second idea I thought about is making flyers with organizations that help and ways that people can help their friends get through their issues. Thanks for reading, check back soon for my agent of change.

Minors Running Away

Posted by Cianni Mack in English 1 · Giknis · A Band on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 8:41 pm

For my final english one project we were assigned the You and The World (Y&TH) project. The purpose of this project is to learn about a current event that connects to ourselves and raise awareness about the topic by researching and making a positive change based off of the new information learned about the topic of our choosing . For my project I decided to do the DC crisis about the missing Black and Latina girls. In DC the new commander of the Metropolitan Police Department posted pictures of the missing girls and made the hashtag #MissingDCGIrls. Knowing social media is an outlet  to spread news quickly in the 21st century , the hashtag got around to many people all over the country. According to an article found on the Cable News Network “Social media responded with outrage that not enough was being done to find the children by law enforcement” I chose this current event because I am a young Black female in this society and to know that young girls just like me are missing and no one was putting as much effort as they could to find them makes me furious. As my research continued I soon found out that the DC crisis wasn't a crisis. By researching the topic more I learned that the commander was just raising awareness of the missing girls. My research has brought me to a extened issue. My official issue is minors running away from home. Minors running away from home is an equally important current event but studies show that there has been no spark in missing persons in DC.

Based off the research I have done so far minors that run away are running from something or someone. There are many reasons on why minors run away from home. A very important thing that young people don't know is that running away is illegal. Most people don't know that running away is illegal , when a minor gets caught running away police can take a them into custody and it will result in having to go to family court. My research so far has impacted me because it taught me new facts about a subject that matters to me, that not a lot of people know enough about. Something that is important to fix this problem is focusing on what is making minors run away. If we focus on who or what is making minors run away as a whole community everyone could help face the problem head on. For the rest of my upcoming research I will be looking into ways to stop minors from running away. Also I will be looking at organizations that help minors get through issues that may lead them to running away. Stay tuned for a second blog post about minors running away. Negative Space Cut Out

Posted by Cianni Mack in Art - Freshman · Hull · d2 Band on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 9:24 pm
Negative space is the space around or between an image. Negative space can show other shapes that catch the viewer's eye. In my image the negative space is the space between the owl, so in this case it is the purple. It helps an artist to see in negative space because it can show the details of the image more. Seeing in negative space does enhance drawings because it makes the art more appealing to the eye by having viewers seeing more than than the actual image. By having negative space viewers can see shapes and other images beyond the main focus

Somos estudiantes de Science Leadership Academy. Está en Filadelfia.  SLA es pequeña pero cinco pisos. Está cerca de “7- Eleven” y City Hall.  Hay 500 estudiantes. SLA tiene muy deportes. Ofrecemos volleyball, Cheerleading, Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball.

Untitled presentation
What I learned from doing this assignment was that when making a slide your things should be centered and should have a theme that is going to catch the viewers eye also it should not be sloppy. For my second slide I decided to just start all over because I felt I could make a better slide. For my new slide I made it plain but something that would catch the viewers eyes. Also I made sure it was centered and nothing came off the slide. It is important to do research before a project because you wont be able to meet all the requirements if you don't do research

Clearly Cianni

Before I made my slide I read the presentation zen link to see what a nice slide should consist of.  The information I got from Presentation zen was to make my letters big, contrast colors , use pictures not a lot of words , and have one theme. So based off the information I decided to make the theme of my slideshow about who I am as a person and put some symbols to describe me. The urban michel basquiat crown  is to symbolize me being a princess. On my slide there is a melting diamond , it symbolizes me not being perfect because no diamond is perfect but still is beautiful and shines very bright. Lastly there is a heart made by people holding hands. I decided to put that there because I have a big heart and I always try to give people a helping hand. My slide has a black background with ombre colors as my title. Presentation zen suggested that people should use contrast colors when trying to make something stand out.  Presentation zen influenced my slide a lot. The title of my slide is Clearly Cianni because the slide clearly describes who I am.
