Here is my benchmark.

Benchmark Reflection:

  • What did you find most challenging about this project?
I found most challenging the process of getting the pictures or paragraphs done first. Sometimes ideas that were written down for me for the different topics actually gave me a better idea and analysis then going off of the picture that I originally took first.
  • How did you go about collecting the images or selecting the images?
I took mass amount of pictures through different cameras in school and my phone camera. I uploaded all to my email and somehow having alot of trouble presenting them on the google doc.
  
  • Which image is your favorite? Why? Elaborate.
 I dont have a favorite image, I would say though the picture of Jefferson in the lights from far shows the distant feeling of a hospital. How close it is to a person and how far away it actually is. Its a different view then the other pictures and shows a different aspect to a somewhat simple picture that couldve been taken.
  • How prevalent is the evidence of globalization in Philadelphia? Do you think it is more or less so (evident) than in other large cities in the US? Why Why not?

I think their is some globalization in Philadelphia but I dont think it is unique in any way. I believe every city has everything that Philadelphia has globally connected and otherwise more then what Philadelphia has. Larger cities such as New York as a prime example shows that it is much more evident through trading and resources because of the different buildings, size, and popularity that New York is able to carry over Philadelphia.

Benchmarks and capstones due in less then two weeks. I might otherwise go commando during the graduation ceremony.. I always wondered why people did that but it does fit into my dumb criteria of "funny things to do that surely will get you in trouble."

Interesting autobiography should be checked out by Mark Twain. It is 100 years overdue to the public and sheds light on his ideas. Overall thoughts on the book is amazing and worth a read.

I have used the reality of cursing and other tools to show my main character. He is still in the beginning stages of the story telling it through tumblr which I might add is very confusing to work. Making blog posts are easy but doing it at the right time is important, that could mean staying up until 3am to write a post on a week day to make the realistic perspective obvious.

Benchmark Reflection:

I chose Guyana and Italy which are two completely different countries in terms of size, political system, and goods that are traded. The process of the project was fairly easily done and reliable through many different sources that were able to help aid me in making a well done project. I found that the five point framework was straightforward but sometimes difficult to find enough evidence for some. For example, the hardest point was hostile neighbors in my two countries because technically they speak about having none, so it was my job to dig up old problems with their boundaries that were shared to create a sense of a hostile neighbor for them.

I thought the other points were pretty straight forward and through the right research gave me enough information for each. I wouldnt change anything to my project but maybe use a different technical way of presenting it. I seen alot of creative ways to showcase ideas through the different countries that I never thought about which made it more interesting to read then through a pdf. It was a fun project and interesting to figure out an estimate to the way the countries would survive considering the five different set points. I found the book to be an alright piece of help in this context but overall I didnt locate the book when I was in trouble but rather used the internet as my fall back to understand the points clearer.

Benchmark process

The process is in its beginning stages. I have created a tumblr account chuckandcrew.tumblr.com for my character. I am in the process of creating a couple other tumblrs that intertwine with my character to show its realistic view. I am going to use this as my only tool since twitter is now not needed in the works of what I am doing. I believe I can accomplish alot with tumblr since it has alot more items and tools to work toward.​

I just got accepted to a school in Florida and I was looking forward to going there but reviews on studentreviews.com seem to discourage that. I noticed its at every school that there are many negative reviews that seem to really downgrade the school or any school in that matter. Im confused on trusting what I see and hear or actually experiencing it for myself and making the decision from there.

PSSA's are a stressful test that I am glad I dont need to take anymore. Waste of everyones time since it doesnt even benefit the student at all but just make them stressed for no reason.

Golden Gate Bridge

This is a true story of a friend of mines friend, through which I will tell the story.

One day a couple of friends were driving over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco. It was three friends and the brakes locked on the persons car. The car locked and skidded to the side of the bridge. The person in the passenger seat went through the windshield and over the bridge.

... AND LIVED. She is alive today and tells the story all the time. She went over a bridge through a windshield and a car accident on one of the biggest bridges in the U.S.

College is so expensive and I dont understand why? Its shorter in school days, you have to pay before you even get accepted/rejected. What is the point of paying excessive amounts and then being in debt for years after college?

Tuesday: Jungle

One year when I was around five years old. We went to the zoo trip that was outside of Philadelphia. I actually forget the area or location now being alot older but there is a video of the story. My family and our neighbor Maryellen went onto a trip to the six flags safari thing where your aloud inside the Forrest t​o see the animals up close. There is a strict policy that you cant feed the animals. But of course our crazy neighbor brang a blue little cooler with all types of fruits and snacks to feed the animals. We started the car ride down into the forrest and two monkeys came upon the car. A mother monkey carrying another child on the windshield and her song hanging from the side view mirror. Maryellen thought it might be a good idea to give some food to the animals. This caused havoc in the forrest and around five hundred dollars of damages. It was a great experience though and funny, it just goes to show you should never feed animals that are wild and if your in a small car.

A day can fulfill your needs or end your dreams. It could hurt you or make you the happiest person alive. Its each day, the different sequences in between that make people understand life in a different light. I remember this one day, doesnt matter what time or if it was during the weekday/weekend, the sequences of it changed the way I portrayed life.

Driving by a little known street near all the fast food places near Front st. I always take this route to get to all my favorite places to eat and its the quickest way, but this time I seen something that changed how I viewed my life. Something big and wide was in the middle of the unseen street. It looked like a log or a box, maybe? Coming closer to it and about to go around it, I notice a pool of blood and it wasnt an object but rather a person. A homeless person who seemed to have gotten shot in his head. Scared out of my mind, I decided to call the police in which they came in 20 minutes. Not because they took long but because it was hard to describe the area I was in. I noticed when they made us leave that the person they picked up was an old friend of mine. He wasnt a bum, nor old but a classmate I went to elementary school with...

Jake just bought a new iphone at AT&T and was excited because he was upgrading from a horrible slide up phone that he had for three years. He was happy finding out how to use this 21 century phone and loved the new texting on touch screen.

One day he was driving and he got a text. He was always told by his parents to not be on his phone and drive at the same time, but today he seen there was no cars in front of him on Bigler street so he went for it. Unlocked the code he had on the welcome screen, looked up, made sure everything was good and then looked at the text. Jake took a mere 2 seconds glancing at the screen but they cost him and his car. A pothole unseen from around the side of the street was deep and missed the cone that should had been covering it. He went into it and the tire popped off, as it popped off, he flipped his tiny car over to the side. He suffered a broken arm, leg, fractured skull, a broken phone , and insurance cost him thousands.

Today consisted of work, work, and more work. One thing a person learns though from working are the different people and personalities you meet in a restaurant...

Table 5, a deuce, two men, nicely dressed. I go up to give them their waters and they stop me and converse.

What school you go to? Whats your name? Grade? How you like it?

Questions started to pour out that I answered fast and then they stated their positions, head of the school district panel. Nice men, listening to what I had to say and talked to me. Even recognized my dedication to making money and having a job while in school. They were a nice pair, giving a job to a friend at work. One of the waiters who was looking for a job, they offered one in the school district. Its always different every night at a restaurant and you could meet someone that changes your life or makes your night. Its a different atmosphere, one alot of people should experience once in their life time. You never know if it will benefit you.

Today was the beginning of a nightmare for Bella. Being stalked by wolves and vampires gives a strain on your personal life and love life as she shown today, speaking to her psychiatrist.

B: I cant take all this "trying to kill me" stuff. I didnt do anything to anyone!
P:That is true but no matter what, you were in a relationship with a vampire. Didnt you think that would cause something?
B: He was hot! what would you have done?
P: Well that has nothing to do with this situation, Im an older lady.
B: Right so let me have some fun with hot vampires!
P: I didnt say you couldnt, but dont you think thats why your being hunted by alot of different groups that arent human?
B: I geuss..

Bella starts to ponder about her relationship with a vampire, and stayed. She made this decision off of love and stupidity. She died shortly after making this decision.;

First story slam

Today was our english classes first ever story slam. In the beginning when Chase became to call names, everyone looked around as if people forgot what today was.

"Pick a number 1-30!" He shouted.

For a second I was nervous because I thought we had to prepare something but after the first person went up and read their story. It was relaxed through out the rest of the story slam and was very comfortable. Stories told from your heart dont need preparation but just memory and everything else is for show. I was eagerly waiting after the first person went to hear my name be called because now I wanted to do it. I never usually get nervous but for a second I was worried that everyone had a story prepared and it was going to be exactly five minutes and official. I noticed that everyone was in the same boat I was in which was better for me to get out of that nervous stage, like when you first try something new. but it seems like ill have to wait until next Tuesday to get another chance to say my story...

Sunday short story

"Why are you talking like that?" asked the teacher curiously.

"Im aloud to talk any way I want!" snapping back was the student.

"Not in my room your not, im calling the principal."

"I dont care, do it!"

The argument shocked the class room, an arguement between the teacher and the valedictorian.  People gasped and sighed with questions popping up asking,

"did he really just say that"
"I cant believe out of everyone he would talk to her like that!"

Everyone was confused, how the arguement landed the straight a student in the principals office but alot of rumors came spewing out. Some people said he was playing on his phone, others say they found out he was being black mailed by the teacher or that she was going to mess up his record of straight A's with a b minus. It was to hard to tell and no one had time to ask him as he stormed out of the room. We assumed all day until finally he came into the lunch room. Everyone stared at him as he walked in since word got around fast about the little fight and then someone shouted

"what happened to ya smart ass, did she give you a 99 on a quiz"

Everyone laughed but him and he turned in the kids direction, smiled and walked to his table without saying a word. We still dont know to this day why he did it and he wont ever say why. But the only thing we do know was we had a new history teacher starting the next week.

Saturday Short story

No one understood what he was saying. It was if we had earmuffs on our ears. Does anyone understand this kid?

"dah dah dah boom!"

He kept on repeating himself in an alert manner that scared us. We were locked up in this elevator for only two hours and he just snapped. He couldnt take the close space and phobia that surrounded being in small areas with many people. There was enough room for the five of us but we were getting tired and it was hard to just lay down on the floor to wait for the rescue.

Bobby was walking in the school park when he figured out he forgot his dignity at his house. Bobby asked his friend johanna for a piece of his dignity.

B: Hey
J: Hey
B: You able to give me some dignity, I left mine at home.
J: Sure, how much do you need?
B:I need a lot actually because my parents are coming from Virginia to visit me and they are going to put me down because of the cheating incident.
J: Okay

Bobby was able to receive enough dignity to get through the weekend with his parents.

Today started around 7 30 am, a first happened. Rushing to get to school in my car, I was going pretty fast down 22nd to get to school for our DA shadowing that we had today because we won first place in one of the debate tournaments. All of a sudden, I heard a cop siren behind me but couldn't identify where it was coming from, so I kept driving through lanes to get past the bus. All of a sudden an unmarked black car came up beside me as we drove down one of the streets, pulled down his window and cursed at me. It was funny now looking back because an undercover police officer told me to "calm the F down" and then drove away. I was lucky enough to not get a ticket and I assume part of that had to do with the tie and dress shirt I chose to wear for the shadowing day.

Story #1, debate tournament

Today was the first day of my debate tournament that will be held in SLA at 3:30. Today consisted of writing a case in less then two hours to debate and finding out the rooms and judges for each team that will come. It is a particularly stressful day to be able to get everything done in time for the mini tournament that will be held on Tuesdays. This is part of my capstone and is a major step in creating more oppurtunities for students to debate. It will help everyone get prepared for the tournament next week at the Bell classic, which has teams from the state of Pennsylvania debating at all levels.

I was able to choose through a variety of laws and cases because of my age at seventeen/eighteen, alot of laws pertain to me in various ways. I am able to also look at taxes since I work and legal rights with school and in our state that effects me. This process was a bit difficult finding positive laws, usually its harder to find positive impacts through the laws that are made. It wasnt hard finding all the cases/laws for all the branches because I can identify with many groups that are effected by laws.


I believe my life will become more affected by the government. Buying houses, holding an actual job, and raising a family brings alot of taxes and other benifits like 401k that you dont have when you are younger. After turning 18, I pertain and follow to every law in the country at that point since I would be an adult. Its obvious that my life will be greatly affected by government. I thought the process of the project was a decent amount of workload over a period of time and I understood the three branches alot clearer and better after doing the project.

#5- Finalize and Extend

My lobbying assignment was on the No Child Left behind Act. I am in the process of finishing sending out a letter too public officials in Pennsylvania. With the hope of a response, we will lead to talking in person with the official(s) about the chance of revising or implementing some type of new act that could take NCLB acts spot since it is decreasing in all aspects and is not working at the face value they hoped when it was created 9 years ago. The idea also is to get word out to republican officials in Philadelphia because all voted yes back in 2001 for the act.

Possible revisions or new type of act:

Representative of Philadelphia’s 1st district.
Caseys statement on No Child Left Behind Act, a General Statement:

He has proposed The Pathways to College Act, with bipartisan sponsorship, is a bill designed to aid low-income and first generation students in their transition to secondary education by focusing attention on the importance of school counseling in the college and career planning process. This bill will provide funds to high school districts to invest in school counseling services to establish a college-going culture.

Liquor License

  • Briefly summarize the bureaucratic 'task' that you selected.
  • We selected the liquor license as our bureaucratic task for a restaurant in a zone applicable for selling liquor. So we chose two restaurants Adobe cafe and Popis Italian restaurant.
  • Give an overview of your process
  • We found all the documents that had to be filled out and then seen what the checklist paper on what of them stated we needed to do. From there we created the flow chart using various step by step websites obtaining one and the paperwork documents.
  • Reflect upon the paperwork that you needed to fill out. Was it straightforward, easy, difficult, perplexing, etc
  • The paper work was only around 5 pages and pretty straightforward. There wasnt any hard parts except for finding out the height and width for how much space the alcoholic beverages are going to be sold on.
  • If you could change one thing about the bureaucratic process that you flow charted, what would it be and why?
  • I think make some more room to show all the different types of liquor licenses you can apply to if your not a restaurant and maybe show the transfer documents and how that is also a different process then just focusing on obtaining one.
  • Why do you think the systems have become so complicated? 
  • The systems probably became so complicated to stop fraudulent processing. These documents asked and information asked really show you need everything, you cant just get away with estimating or lying. 
  • Other thoughts, reflections, feedback.
  • I thought this project was informative and definitively opened my eyes about how confusing and complicated these bureaucratic functions are

#4 Communicate

The process is going slow and very difficult since Bob Casey and co. are very difficult to get in touch with. The educational board meetings do have some effectiveness to the process of hearing the problems from adults and students but I think it could go an extra step. I think the most effective way to try and change this NCLB act and lobby against it is to find a way to set up an appointment at a meeting with educational officials. Start off slow and show alternatives,surveys, statistics, etc to show that something has to be done and then while the lower ranked officials start to see in groups this effective campaign and presentation, the grass roots of word of mouth might take place where it becomes very public. Another good idea, off of this is to call news companies up to cover the story and hear more about the process and things being said in these town hall meetings for this act to be reformed. Hopefully overtime we can set up a meeting with the head official like Bob Casey jr.

First Step- Make a facebook page about standardized testing.

Second Step- Little video explaining why its bad, funny make it go viral. (hopefully)

Third Step- Start challenging officials to debate on NCLB.

Lobbying against: No Child Left Behind Act

The act was proposed by George W. Bush to standards-based education reform, which is the belief that setting high standards and establishing measurable goals can improve individual outcomes in education. The Act requires states to develop assessments in basic skills to be given to all students in certain grades and does not assert a national achievement standard. These standards are set by each individual state.

The main goal of NCLB is to close the “achievement gap with accountability, flexibility, and choice, so that no child is left behind.” Voting took place in 2001 with majority voting yes (87) and only 10 nays. Two republican senators from Pennsylvania voted yes on the bill.
More on the NCLB Act.

Arlen Sector was a republican senator since 1996 and voted yes to pass the No Child Left Behind Act when it was proposed in 2001. He also believes that this act needs to be reformed by supporting the Pathways to college act proposed to reform the educational and re-authorization of middle and high school success in education. In 2009, he switched parties to the Democratic side to try and get reelected. He was unsuccessful being defeated by current runner Joe Sestak.  
Rick Santorum was a former senator of Pennsylvania and voted yes to pass the No Child Left Behind Act also. He played a major role in the process of NCLB act being proposed and is now known for creating the Santorum Amendment. The Santorum Amdendment is in the modified bill and doesnt play a major part in the Act but is still considered the stepping stone in proposing the act. He came up with the “teach the controversy” campaign which implemented teaching science efficiently and teaching things that are still being debated.  He was defeated in 2006 by Bob Casey jr.





My defense:
Who is creating this test? Officials or the teachers? It takes away from the unique experience in class that officials who have no experience of situations with students choose to pick the educational process of learning and the tests that follow through their lives.

Some states dont even have as many writing questions because they lack funds. Gary Cook, Wisconsin’s former testing director, said “it could cost a thousand times more to score an essay question than a multiple-choice question.” In 2005, the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center reported that 15 states relied on multiple-choice questions in reading and math tests.

There is no evidence that this is succeeding as a program and it seems that it is just crippling school districts with funds that they do not have.

Evidence:

“A study classified elementary school students as "actively" engaged in learning if they went back over things they didn't understand and participated in understanding such questions” Students are able to skip hard questions and relate to the easy parts of the test which defeats the purpose helping students to learn better.

Schools are under pressure to show better test results which has cannibalized the curriculum. When students are judged on a multiple-choice test, teachers use multiple-choice exercises and in-class tests to curb a students understanding to the test, which takes away from the rigor of learning that a student is supposed to learn. A student shouldnt have to worry so highly and waste class time on learning to take a quiz or eliminating wrong answers to multiple choice questions.

Administrators have cut back vital parts of schooling such as:
Programs in the arts
Recess for young children
Electives for high schoolers
Class meetings discussions about current events since that material will not appear on the test

Caseys statement on No Child Left Behind Act, a General Statement:
“Reforming the No Child Left Behind Legislation Washington's No Child Left Behind legislation is actually leaving millions of schoolchildren behind. As it stands now, No Child Left Behind is all stick and no carrot. Its combination of confusing federal mandates and gross under-funding threatens to undermine creative state and local efforts to improve our schools. In contrast, Bob Casey will work to provide our schools with the crucial assistance they need to meet high academic performance standards.”

Casey is hoping to create in support of other officials a reform act on No Child Left Behind to fix the problems that have occurred.

He has proposed The Pathways to College Act, with bipartisan sponsorship, is a bill designed to aid low-income and first generation students in their transition to secondary education by focusing attention on the importance of school counseling in the college and career planning process. This bill will provide funds to high school districts to invest in school counseling services to establish a college-going culture.

1. What is the status of your issue at the legislature? Is this a "good" year?

This is a bad year in terms of my issue on NCLB. They are talking about making a reform of it and a lot of people believe on both sides of the political sphere that is has not worked as efficiently as expected. Senator Bob Casey jr. is coming up with another bill called the pathways to college act to curb an understanding and reform the NCLB act.

2. Who is essential to the outcome?

Who are the stakeholders in this issue? Who are the allies you need to have on board because they increase the power you have to move the issue? Which decision-makers do you need to move (committee chairs, legislation sponsors, etc)?

To make this outcome happen, we need more support from the republican side and a big part of this process was when Rick Santorum switched sides to support this NCLB act reform and go against his own belief when he voted for the NCLB back in 2001.

3. Who else is working on this? Can you coordinate?

Only Bob Casey jr as the public official of Pennsylvania.

4. Who can you influence?

I would try and influence the republicans more since the republicans proposed the bill back in 2001 and a lot still believe it. It wouldn’t be hard to have people more educated with the problems this bill is causing through statistics.

5. What is the time frame?

There is no time frame.

6. When are key dates - meetings, committee hearings, deadlines, etc.

There are no key dates or meetings thus far this year.

Why do men have nipples?

Why do men have nipples?. It’s the kind of question that doesn’t need to be answered but should be interesting to find out why they are there. It’s understandable for women to have nipples because it is the distributor for the breast milk to feed a newborn baby but a man, what does he need it for? According to Darwin’s theory on natural selection, it is theorized that men shouldn’t have nipples because during natural selection, the undesirable traits in the male/female body gradually lose their parts they don’t need over time. This would make sense as to why men have nipples; the process must not go through natural selection obviously since there must be a significant reason for it being there. A great example was the appendix, which now a useless part of our bodies was a part of the digestive track making it significant component. [1]

Men have nipples because it follows part of a female template since both sexes have similar tissue and body parts. Since this is confirmed that we share parts, it isn’t hard to understand why men just have nipples. When breasts grow abnormally on men it is called gynecomastia, which is the enlargement of breasts. So the question is simple surprisingly, Men and women follow the same template and nipples are just created no matter what sex you are and the chromosomes figure out if they will be functioning or non functioning in the process of knowing if they are going to be a man or woman. Its the effect of genes, in which the Y chromosome and hormone testosterone that changes the embryo. The idea of shared genetic basis of two traits is known as genetic correlation. Genetic correlation is “the proportion of variance that two traits share due to genetic causes.”[3] The evolutionary default is for males and females to share characters through genetic correlations.[4] Testosterone promotes the growth of the penis and testicles in men and since nipples are there before this process begins, they inhabit. Some genetic scientists have noted through this article that if nipples were harmful for the male body, they would have disappeared over time.
